Developing Life Skills Welcome to the joy of being a parent. The greatest gifts that parents can give their children are independence and resiliency, and by choosing to send your child to camp, you have given both. When you send your child to camp, you are placing them in an intentional environment designed specifically to help develop the life skills needed to be a successful and competent adult — skills like selfconfidence, leadership, and empathy. Your child will have the opportunity to develop new interests and authentic relationships with mentors and peers — experiences that truly last a lifetime. Through the camp experience, your child will become a member of a wonderful community — a community where character is built and civility toward each other is nurtured. In a world where interactions with other people have become increasingly impersonal, the ability to relate to another human being — to understand that the world is bigger and

more complex than a Facebook profile page — is paramount. Tomorrow’s leaders will not be those who can type or text with lightning speed, they will be those who can have a face-to-face conversation and articulate their thoughts, ideas, and values. Tomorrow’s leaders will be able to relate globally and find common ground with people who are vastly different from themselves — people from different backgrounds and cultures. Tomorrow’s leaders will be made and educated by experiences like camp. Camp is one of the oldest and finest community-based experiential education and development models in America. With concerns about summer learning loss, it’s important for families to know that camp truly is a classroom without walls — providing fun designed around intentional programming. Congratulations on the decision to join the ranks of the camp parent.

Things to consider when selecting a camp for your children

W

here do you want your child to go to camp? Locally or far away? While each camp experience has something unique to offer your child, this is an opportunity for families to assess what they value for their campers. Benefits of Camp Nearby • Easier to evaluate and visit • Friends and family are likely familiar with camp • Minimal travel costs • Likely contact with classmates or children from same region Benefits of Camp Far Away • More choices • Different experiences, different geography, e.g., mountains or oceans—even different languages • Promotes independence, particularly for early and late adolescent campers • Diversity of campers • Chance for family to visit and vacation at close of camp Session Length Offers Another Choice • Camps offer widely varying options to help parents and children reach their goals for summer fun and exploration. Talking with your child about the goals you both share helps determine which choice is right for you. Benefits of Short Sessions (one-three weeks) • First-time or younger campers have a chance to learn new skills •Bonds develop with other campers and staff •Great exposure to camp experience with less expense • Minimizes homesickness Benefits of Longer Sessions (four-twelve weeks) • Strong sense of belonging to camp community • Chance to learn new skills • Development of specialized skills • Multiple opportunities for learning and enrichment • Lifelong friendships • Opportunities to contribute to camp culture

It’s a process. Not all customers know what they want but they ALWAYS know what they don’t want. We invite them to come in and enjoy themselves, pick out frames and matting, and then, if they want our input, we’re glad to provide it, Jeanne tells us. “M

Summer with the ERC

y daughter did some things that she was initially afraid of—sleeping outside, for example. She came back raving about how cool it was to watch the stars as you fell asleep. As a parent, I see that as.... priceless!” Triumphs such as this are why we do what we do at the ERC. At our overnight camps, we hire a professional staff to deliver a genuine, place-based, experiential education curriculum during the day, complementing our traditional evening and nighttime activities. Master Naturalists join us to lead our day and evening programs. We develop programs treasured by children and parents alike. Our participants acquire a language and love of place—we foster a passion for the natural world, and teach the skills and knowledge they need to understand and protect it. We hope your family will join us for an amazing summer. Whether you all join a River Romp, your child makes his or her first foray into overnight camps in the safety and caring of our small-group settings, or your littlest ones join us for Wild Notes at the Symphony, we know you will find yourself thrilled with the company of people who love this place we call home—for a day, or for a lifetime.

ids Kampus Bilingual Preschool and Daycare proudly offers a summer camp that gives children the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of our Valley with outdoor fun activities that include gymnastics at Camp Boing, tennis lessons at Wood River High School, water games, fishing, hiking, a water park, lift ride up Baldy, parks and much more. At Kids Kampus we strive to create a safe learning environment that promotes developmentally appropriate education skills for young children to learn about themselves, others and their surroundings. Our summer program is only part of our enriched preschool program where we offer “hands-on” and “minds-on” academic activities that enhance our students’ learning. Young learners are very curious and almost everything interests them. They learn by exploring, handling things and struggling with problems that intrigue them. For this reason we are committed to your children by giving them great care and attention to social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. At Kids Kampus we help your children build strong and confident feelings about themselves, become excited about learning and learn to function successfully and independently in the world.

ome be part of a preschool and after-school program that believes in a loving atmosphere and fabulous education. Experiencing education is the key, and Kinder Welt offers a variety of classes to make learning come alive! From library field trips to ceramics class, it’s always an adventure! There is Kids in the Kitchen and music class, and every year we host not only an annual summer BBQ and Valentine’s luncheon, but even a Christmas party complete with a puppet show! We encourage families to join in all the events or to just stop by and interact

L

with our kids as we enjoy a normal day. We at Kinder Welt strive for a brilliant program and do our best to fit into every budget. There is no need for childcare to resemble college tuition so we include class fees and programs in the overall billing! No child ever gets left out of any activity and every Kinder Welt member has the same opportunities. Most importantly, we never bill for more than what a child has attended. No more worries about taking vacation or sick days and paying for childcare! Enjoy your time off and Kinder Welt will see you when you get back!

iss Laura’s offers a summer full of childhood fun, imagination and learning! Children come first and are allowed to be children. Your child learns through art, music, crafts, games and companionship. Summer is a time for laughter, sharing, and developing interpersonal skills to last a lifetime. It is also a time for exploring and making sense of the world. It’s a time to ask important and silly questions, outside the structure of school, that usually begin with “why” and end with “but why,” and a time of creating friendships and socializing with our peers. Because every child is unique, the focus at Miss Laura’s is on individualized care and direc-

tion. Goals are based on each child’s age, interest and abilities; it is a family-based center with a homelike feeling in a fully-equipped, safe facility. Miss Laura’s summer program focus is on personal interaction, respect, and imagination. Each child is offered the freedom to express himself or herself and develop their creativity while giving them the skills they need to succeed in a classroom as they move into school age, or prepare for the next school year. Full-day and half-day care is available, and drop-ins are welcome, with reservations. Miss Laura’s is fully certified and is “kid approved.” Open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (earlier on request). We accept ages 2-7 years.

When it comes time to pack for camp, let the kids do the work! Kids need to know what they are taking to camp. What is in the suitcases or trunk? You need to let them help you with the packing. Every camp sends a list of things to bring to camp. Follow the list. Don’t buy expensive clothing for camp. Clothes at camp tend to get dirty; that is just the nature of being in the outdoors. Take extra socks. Take old shoes, gym shoes or hiking boots. Camp is not the place to “break-in” new shoes. Take a laundry bag, rain poncho, water bottle, sun block, insect repellent, flashlight, shower supplies and toiletries. Put shower supplies and toiletries in a plastic bucket or “shower” container so it is easy to carry to the bathhouse. Put the camper’s name on everything from clothes to toothpaste. Use a permanent non-washable inkpad or marking pen. Make sure all medication is in the original container and clearly marked. Know the procedure for getting the medication to the nurse. Pack stationery and postcards. Put stamps on the envelopes. Have your child address some of the envelopes before he/she goes to camp with your home address as well as friends and relatives. Let your child take a stuffed animal if he/she wants. Many children put them on their beds. Send along pictures of your family and pets. Your child can show them to his bunkmates. Pack a disposable camera instead of an expensive one. Be sure to write your child’s name on the camera. Clearly label your child’s suitcase or trunk.

Twelve tips

It is important to prepare your child for a camp experience, whether it is for a one-week sleep away camp near your town or a four-week camp out-of-state. Visit the camp, if at all possible, and meet the camp director. Talk to other families who have gone to the camp in years past to familiarize yourself with what goes on. Have your child spend a weekend with a friend. No phone calls. Talk about it with your child afterwards. How did your child feel the second night? Go over the daily schedule with your child so there are no surprises. Learn as much as you can about camp life. Teach your child how to care for him/herself. Children need to know how to select appropriate clothing, make a bed with clean sheets, put clothes away, set a table, carry out chores, handle laundry, etc. Problem solve with your child by using “what if situations to prepare for unexpected events. What if you lose your baseball glove? What if you don’t get along with another child? What if you don’t feel well? Let your child brainstorm for solutions and make sure they know the “chain of command at camp for handling problems. Familiarize your child with the outdoors. Many city children are unfamil-

iar with total darkness and country night sounds. Practice walking in the dark with a flashlight. Homesickness is fairly common. Missing home, parents, pets or friends is pretty normal. It is part of growing up and leaving home. Speak openly about it and your child will experience these feelings with less anxiety and more understanding. Camp staff is trained to help your child through these ups and downs. Discuss communication at camp. Does your camp allow phone calls? Letters or postcards are best although now camps have fax and email. Give your child stamped envelopes and postcards already addressed. Practice letter writing. The more your child writes to others, the more mail he/she will receive! Communicate with camp officials. Let them know if there are special circumstances or considerations regarding your child’s well being or behavior. Send letters to your child before camp begins so mail is waiting when he/she arrives. Write daily keeping it simple. Send the sports or comics from the local newspaper, a cute card, a package with a word game, etc. Prepare yourself for your child going off to camp. You have chosen the best camp for your child and he/she will have a wonderful summer full of fun, new friends, new songs and many exciting experiences.

he Sun Valley Center for the Arts offers kids a number of ways to work on their art-making skills this summer. Whether kids have a week or two to devote to art, or just a brief afternoon, The Center has ways to dive into painting, printmaking, sculpture or collage. In July, The Center offers two full weeks of summer art camps for ages 5-6 in the mornings and 7-10 year olds in the afternoons. Teacher Kim Stocking will lead a variety of different projects over the class—so kids can take both weeks and never repeat a project! August brings classes that are less of a time commitment; during the 43rd annual Sun Valley Arts & Crafts Festival kids and parents can drop into the craft area and do a free project any time between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day. Then, our summer kids’ classes wrap up with Doing Art Together—a class for kids with adults—where the focus will be on printmaking in the style of Andy Warhol. Parents, don’t forget, The Center has classes for adults all summer long, too!
