The ambiance of the Wood River Valley By KATHLEEN L. TURNER
lanning to say “I do” sometime soon? Or coordinating the “talk about” party of the year? If the Sun Valley area is your perfect backdrop, here are some inside tips on getting you from initial concept to final toast with confidence and kudos. Location: If you’ve chosen the Wood River Valley as your dot on the map, that says that you love the outdoors, the mountains and the laid-back lifestyle. Within this unique framework, you might be surprised to learn that there are so many simple and sophisticated options. Aside from the quintessential Sun Valley Resort, there exists a world of choice here, with many locations that vow to deliver rave reviews, no matter what the occasion. We’ve got a number of beautiful mountain gems with stunning panoramas and pretty wildflowers. We’ve got gorgeous, lodge-like club facilities and casual ranch-style accommodations. We’ve got breathtaking mountain views and lush gardens with dramatic water features. What’s your pleasure? Dive into our list and prepare to be pleasantly surprised. Timing: We also have seasons here. All of them. Some are shorter than others, but all are beautiful in differ-
ent ways and all lend themselves to individual preferences. While summer is undoubtedly the most popular season for both weddings and events in the Wood River Valley, elegant plans can be designed around just about any of our fabulous winter sports. And, if you’re into extremes, we’ve got that, too. With outfitters and suppliers that provide for every need on the mountain, on the river, in the backcountry, or nestled into one of the handsome resort area lodges, the sky is virtually the limit. Nibbles: Whether you’re envisioning a formal dinner for hundreds, or a small, casual affair for a dozen of your closest friends, the quality de cuisine here is stellar. Caterers and restaurants here are used to handling extraordinary details while attending to elite international travelers and high-end businesses. Whatever you can dream up, they can provide. Many are creative in their own right as well, having published cookbooks or style guides, and can suggest their very best food-to-event pairings. If you’re organically inclined, the Valley has choices that will delight there as well, with a broad selection of farmers and ranchers investing in low-profile chemistry, complemented by intuitive and creative chefs. Services: Not used to planning without a net? There are event planners here, as well as helpful local suppliers, with expertise in every facet of throw-

ing a party, especially décor, music and activities. From elegant tents and jaw-dropping florals, to never-forgetit celebrations on horseback or skis, check our pages for the style that fits your dreams. Gilding the Lily: Clothes may make the man, but diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and jewelers here have just the right rings and things to create a lifetime of Sun Valley memories. Custom settings and unique lines, as well as traditional settings, are beautiful ways to ensure lasting reminders of your special event. Details: If you’re traveling to the Sun
Valley area from another state, why bring it with you? It’s all here waiting, from paper goods and invites to tuxedoes and makeup, hair stylists and spas to bankers and financial advisors, your needs can be met and exceeded by businesses and services used to working with sophisticated clientele. From the initial planning stages, make your life simpler by placing event details in the hands of locally based professionals that have the expertise, knowledge, products and connections to create the perfect event for your exquisite day in the sun. twp

hirty Years of Edible Art. You’ve seen the cake challenges on TV… well, the adventures of Mary Jones and The Chocolate Moose make them look tame! Mary is the “go-to” person for wedding planners who need Champagne bottles made of chocolate and filled with truffles, 2000 personalized trout cookies or a groom’s cake shaped like his airplane (in 3D!). Mary and two friends founded The Saturn Café in Santa Cruz, Calif., but after she fell in love with Ketchum in the 1980s, she went solo with The Chocolate Moose Restaurant. Ketchum was so seasonal then that wholesale accounts helped her survive slack. For over 30 years Mary has supplied the majority of our restaurants with desserts, including Helcia Graf’s Matter of Taste. The wholesaling led to accounts at Nordstrom, Neiman-Marcus and Marshall Field’s for edible puzzles, chocolate paper-dolls, and her
infamous “BETTER-THANSEX”© Chocolate Cake (sold locally in slices at McClain’s Pizza and whole at Atkinsons’ Markets). Mary’s art background comes into play in crafting custom-designed cookies and cakes. Chocolate Moose creations have included chocolate portraits, wearable (but edible!) clothing made of gingerbread and chocolate, and an edible working prayer wheel for The Dalai Lama’s visit. Many local wedding planners and caterers exclusively recommend Mary’s services, knowing their clients will have the best-tasting cakes, delivered on time and designed to specifications. Demand for Mary’s cakes and wedding-favor cookies increases each season and she is always eager to consult with new clients and enhance the complete Sun Valley wedding experience with one of her amazing confections. Newlywed finances: for better or for worse By Lori Nurge, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Wells Fargo Advisors LLC
T
COURTESY Photo: INGRID HALL
I would like to make a toast to lying, stealing, cheating and drinking. If you’re going to lie, lie for a friend. If you’re going to steal, steal a heart. If your going to cheat, cheat death. And if you’re going to drink, drink with me.
he wedding is over, but your life as a couple has just begun. As a team working together for the first Lori Nurge time, there sare many adjustments you will have to make in the first year together. Of course, you must approach the small stuff like laundry duties and dishes, but one of your main priorities should be working to establish your financial foundation. Something Old: Throughout life’s many milestones, the memories of your past will inevitably serve as a guide when you are setting goals for the years to come. When two people decide to unite in matrimony, they are bringing together their memories, traditions, habits and goals in order to form a partnership that includes everything from family to finances, so be prepared. Talk about your priorities and what really matters to each of you when it comes to money. What your parents valued and how you were exposed to money as a child will have a large influence on your fiscal future, so it is important to communicate openly about your past and how it may play into your short and long term financial goals. Something New: As newlyweds, you will no doubt face many new and exciting challenges together. This is a time for many new beginnings so
you will need to make various transitional adjustments as you move forward. First, you will need to complete a number of administrative duties that come with the legal and financial ties of marriage. Make a will or update your will so the list of beneficiaries for your investment accounts and savings accounts include your spouse. Review your beneficiary designations on your retirement accounts and life insurance policies since they will override any wishes specified in your will. It is also important to review your life insurance coverage to make sure things are in order should something happen to you. When it comes to health insurance, you typically have 30 days after your marriage to add your spouse to your coverage without providing evidence of insurability. Also, if you changed your name, be sure to get a new social security card and driver’s license and update your accounts. After these steps are taken care of, calculate your combined net worth, develop a budget and decide on the process you will use to manage your financial affairs. Will you have a joint bank account or will you handle certain bills separately from individual accounts? You will also need to decide which one of you will be responsible for paying the bills and taking care other financial tasks. Something Borrowed: One of the first things you should do as a married couple is work to eliminate credit card debt so you can begin building a nest egg. After the big wedding, you may be better or worse off
than the average American who owes at least $9,000 in credit card debt.* Whatever your situation, it is most likely that you can’t afford to fall deeper into debt than you already are. Money that you’ve borrowed in the past on credit just puts you further from your financial goals as a couple. Something Blue: When you are building your budget, don’t forget to set aside an emergency fund for a rainy day. Develop a regular savings plan where you automatically defer a portion of your monthly earnings into a separate savings account. During an emotional or unexpected situation, this preparation could prevent the added burden of financial stress at an already difficult time. As newlyweds, the excitement of life together may seem overwhelming at times, especially when it comes to your financial situation. But, if you work together to follow a few simple steps, you can surpass these challenges in order to establish a solid financial strategy that will carry you into the future. *Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) This article was written by Wells Fargo Advisors and provided courtesy of Lori Nurge, CFP® in Ketchum at 208-725-2146 Investments in securities and insurance products are: NOT FDIC-INSURED/NOT BANK-GUARANTEED/ MAY LOSE VALUE Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC, Member SIPC, is a registered broker-dealer and a separate non-bank affiliate of Wells Fargo & Company. on’t trust your wedding photography to any friend or relative who has a nice camera!” says Craig Wolfrom, who has been photographing weddings in and out of the Wood River Valley for almost 10 years. He continued by saying, “Shooting weddings requires not only the ability to shoot portraits and details but, also, critical moments of peak emotion and action—and usually in very low light conditions—all the while having a warm, fun and personable persona that allows brides and grooms, their families and friends, to relax and move through the day naturally.” In looking at Craig’s online portfolio (www.craigwolfromphotography.com), rest assured—Craig has all these bases covered—and then some!

y goal is not to make perfect photographs where nothing is out of place, but to create bold images that are honest, and to capture the moments and genuine interactions that help you remember an experience. I love the collaborative nature of photography and believe that choosing a wedding photographer is as much about the experience we will have together as it is about the highly personal images we will create. I was studying to be a nutritionist in my sophomore year of college when I stumbled across a program that paired writers and photographers to work on long-term projects documenting the culture of Maine. I ended up spending several months photographing Pete Reny, who restored antique Fords, watching the light from the tiny window on the south side of his shop change as he worked tirelessly in front of it. When the snow melted and the long Maine winter was over, I photographed Pete as he carefully pulled each car from the garage and watched his face light up as he took his first drive of the spring. The program made me realize that with a bit of curiosity and a camera around my neck, the possibilities were endless. After the program, I went back to school and completed a degree in photojournalism. After school, I worked at the Santa Fe Photo Workshops with many of today’s most renowned photographers and went on to work as a photojournalist at newspapers and magazines. I made Hailey my home eight years ago and have been fortunate enough to spend my days capturing the unique moments in people’s lives through weddings, portraiture and editorial work. Patti Cakes
atti Cakes is owned and operated by Patti Ahrens. Patti has been making cakes her entire life. As a former set designer for plays, she has worked with nearly all of the theatrical companies in the Valley. It may be due to this experience that she is easily able to take a concept and create an entire scene around that. A Valley resident since 1972, Patti started Camp Little Laugh, a children’s theatre arts camp, with some friends 18 years ago. She ran the art program and did set designs with the kids. Everything Patti makes is custom made to order. She rarely does two the same because she takes bits and pieces of information about the event/person and creates a fantastic, custom, one-of-akind design. If you are planning a wedding, a birthday party or some other event and want a memorable cake (or cupcakes) that people will talk about for years to come, consider Patti’s custom-made, one-of-a-kind, made-with-creativity-and-yourevent-in-mind special treats for your occasion.

Primavera Plants & Flowers
hether it’s winter, spring, summer or fall, weddings happen every season of the year, and the time of year has a subtle effect on the colors, the style, the flowers, and the ambiance of the day. Incorporating the personality of the couple always makes the details more fun and intimate. Having your wedding in Sun Valley means there’s something to do for everyone, and it makes the wedding celebration into a vacation event. In Sun Valley, you have so many choices‌ indoors or outside, or a combination of both; the ceremony may be in a church, a meadow, by the river, a lake, or even on top of Bald Mountain! As a wedding consultant, coordinator and florist, I have spent over 30 years helping couples make their wedding day a dream come true. The flowers create the magic of the moment that will live on in cherished memories and photographs forever. Whatever your budget, dreams and desires may be, there’s always a way to make your wedding special and unique. Good luck, happy planning, and all the best! Karen Dickens, Primavera Plants & Flowers, Ketchum, Idaho
Shannon Pace hen thinking about your wedding hairstyles, it is best to plan ahead. A consultation prior to your wedding day is an excellent beginning. Research, tear photos out of magazines and begin to discuss your wedding hairstyle. Factors to consider will be design of your gown and style of wedding: Is it simple and elegant, soft and romantic, or glamorous couture? Do you want to wear a veil, tiara, or flowers? Is the ceremony inside or out of doors? Whatever style you decide to have on your day, definitely do a practice hair session before the big day. Also, consider your wedding party and close family. Sometimes when family and friends are traveling to your wedding they may not have had time to properly primp and groom. When hiring a stylist for your wedding day, we can insure that your entire party will look their best for your wedding photos! Many brides embrace the opportunity to change their hair for every wedding-related event, marking each event with a different “do: natural for the luncheon, a half-up French twist with a jewel for the rehearsal dinner, and a beautiful look for the big day. Book your consultation as soon as you can; you may need time to grow your hair and experiment with different colors or styles. Just like a fashion shoot, I work on-location on your wedding day to create your unforget-
table bridal look. Red-carpet treatment‌ it is your day to shine! For a consultation and to book your wedding hairstyle, phone Shannon Pace at 208-720-7684.

There are three things that last: faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love.
Taylormade Pottery
ike so many of us, Dianne and Elmer Taylor fell in love with the Wood River Valley the first time they visited. That was back in 1986 when Elmer was invited here to do a three-week ceramics workshop for the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. The Taylors purchased a small log cabin in the commercial/residential zone of West Ketchum before they left to return to Texas. In 2002, Dianne took early retirement from teaching art history in Texas to move to Ketchum full time. She opened Taylormade Pottery in the cabin on Washington Street, where they still live. Both Taylors have been making pots since the 1960s. After Elmer graduated from Arizona State with a Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics, he went to England to apprentice with English Master Potter Michael Leach, son of Bernard Leach. Elmer had planned to be a studio potter, but Bernard influenced him to both make pots and teach, passing on the functional pottery tradition. Dianne also makes functional pots. “It’s
