the mountains around us, we have been able to remind people why we love this area we call home—which has been our goal from the start. 3,400 Feet of awe-someness
Baldy has been called one of the best ski mountains in the world, and with good reason. It boasts 3,400 vertical feet of downhill without the flat spots that bedevil most ski hills. It majors in sunshine with very little wind. It offers awesome spring skiing allowing skiers to stay just ahead of the mush. And lift lines? Well, suffice it to say, Sun Valley doesn’t have to hand out cookies to skiers who spend the better part of an hour standing around instead of schussing. Seattle Ridge Lodge offers patio dining with a bird’s-eye view, while River Run Lodge offers après-ski entertainment beginning at about 2 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays starting mid-December. There’ll be music every day during the Christmas and President’s Day weeks. Warm Springs Lodge will showcase live bands on the patio Thursdays through Sundays beginning at 2 p.m. as things warm up in February. The lifts crank up each day at 9 a.m., closing at 4 p.m., with early and late season discounts available through Dec. 16 and April Fool’s Day and following. College and military discounts also are available. Information: sunvalley.com or 208-622-2135.

40,000 lights in the garden
The Sawtooth Botanical Garden is doubling its holiday lights and adding three new themed light displays this year as it celebrates its second annual holiday light display. Kids and adults are invited to peruse the lighted displays as they walk around the garden, concluding their journey with cookies and hot chocolate. The premiere night on Dec. 8 includes a Chef’s Series Dinner featuring cuisine by Sayvour paired with Hayden Beverage wines. Cost is $75 per person. Cost is $5 per person or $15 per car thereafter from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays Dec. 9-22. Information: 208-726-9358.

a classical touch
The Sun Valley Artist Series will kick off its fourth season this year with a Christmas holiday concert by the Claremont Trio at 7 p.m. Dec. 30 at the Church of the Big Wood in Ketchum. A Meet the Artists presentation precedes the concert at 6:15 p.m. Cost is $25 for adults and $10 for students, available at 208-7255807 or svartistseries.org This piano trio is composed of Juilliard School alumnae Emily Bruskin on violin, Julia Bruskin on cello and Andrea Lam on piano. They’ve won several international competitions and performed at a variety of venues, including the Kennedy Center and the Mostly Mozart Festival. Other concerts will follow—on Jan. 31, Feb. 9 and March 3. Information: svartistseries.org 101 Amazing Things To Do / Winter 2012-13

a good soaking
Idaho reportedly has more geothermal gems than any other state in the Lower 48. And you’ll find one of them at Frenchman’s Bend, about seven miles past Ketchum out Warm Springs. Look for the pools on the left side of the road as the road hooks a definite left turn. There is a sign closing the area to use from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. and forbidding the use of alcohol. If you’re in Stanley, check out the popular Sunbeam Hot Springs several miles east of Stanley and just west of Sunbeam off Highway 75. You can’t miss it, as there’s a charming stone bathhouse along the river there.

antiques galore
Hailey’s Holiday Antique Market will feature hickory, pottery, Western, military, toy and farm-related treasures and more. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28-30, at the National Guard Armory across from Roberta McKercher Gateway Park near Fourth Avenue and Highway 75 in Hailey. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday to benefit the Animal Shelter and Hailey Souper Suppers. Information: Alee Marsters at 208-720-1146. You can also find antiques in Ketchum at such shops as Déjà vu, Charles Stuhlberg Gallery and Steve Eich Antiques & Gallery, and in Hailey at Lone Star Antiques & Home Furnishings.

aprés-ski
Belly up to a hot buttered rum as you listen to jazz and other renderings at Sun Valley’s historic Duchin Room after a thighburning day on the slopes. The Duchin Room in the Sun Valley Lodge features music from 4:30 p.m. to closing. And there’ll be comedy acts from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays starting Jan. 11 and ending March 30. You can keep your ski boots on for the après-ski music at River Run Lodge. The music starts about 2 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays starting mid-December and continuing through the end of the season. And there’ll be music every day during Christmas and President’s Day weeks. The popular patio bands at Warm Springs will start up in February as the days begin to warm. 101 Amazing Things To Do / Winter 2012-13

backcountry skiing
Sometimes it’s nice to leave the lift line behind, whether you’re headed to The Cross near Galena Summit, the slopes at the end of Eagle Creek and Lake Creek, or Durrance Peak near the Sawtooth National Recreation Area Headquarters. Sawtooth Mountain Guides is offering guided trips off Baldy this winter for the first time. Guides will take skiers and boarders up the Bald Mountain chairlift and then duck the ropes outside Seattle Ridge for trips down into Greenhorn Gulch. They also have permission to take clients off the Warm Springs side of the mountain, although not in The Burn. Sawtooth Mountain Guides also offer guided ski tours in the Galena Summit area, the Sawtooth Mountains and the Banner Summit area west of Stanley along Highway 21. Information: sawtoothguides. com or 208-7743324. Sun Valley Trekking also offers guided backcountry tours: 208-788-1966 or svtrek.com.

He may not have time to make a couple of ski runs, given how busy he is this time of year. But not even the din of hammers rat-a-tat-tatting in Santa’s workshop can keep the Jolly Ol’ Man from making a visit to Sun Valley—his favorite place south of the North Pole—this season. In fact, Santa hopes to start a new holiday tradition by joining children and their parents at a breakfast buffet Saturdays and Sundays Dec. 8-23 in the Lodge Dining Room. Cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. Children ages 3 and under will be admitted free. Reservations: 208-622-2800.

‘distracted’
Of course, we hope you’ll give your full attention to this play when Company of Fools stages it at The Liberty Theatre, 110 N. Main St., in Hailey. The play revolves around a young hyperactive child who can’t sit still. Instead, he curses, he raps and—ohmygosh—wait until you see what he does next! The play is a powerful indictment of a society that thinks we can solve every problem with a pill. The play dates are Feb. 13-March 2. Curtain time is 7 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17. For tickets, call 208-578-9122 or go to companyoffools.org

And years. Despo’s at 211 4th St. in Ketchum has the tastiest grilled Chimichanga you’ll find anywhere. No visit to Sun Valley is complete without a visit to Grumpy’s on Warm Springs Road for a quarter cheeseburger or fowl burger or to Cristina’s Restaurant and Bakery at 520 2nd St. E. in Ketchum for Tuscan pastas and soups served up with a lot of care and attention. The Konditorei in the Sun Valley Village is being restored to its former Austrian-style elegance this winter. Sun Valley often offers movie passes at the Sun Valley Opera House to diners at Bald Mountain Pizza, Trail Creek Cabin, The Ram and Gretchen’s. gallery walks
Sun Valley sports world-class art, ranging from the somewhat abstract Western art of local artist Theodore Waddell at the Gail Severn Gallery to the aboriginal art at Harvey Art Projects USA. Gallery Walks held nine times a year are a fun way to take it all in. The walks, from 5 to 8 p.m., offer a chance to peruse the latest artwork, chat with the artists and gallery owners and enjoy wine, sparkling water and a few nibbles. Former Idaho legislator Wendy Jaquet usually leads free Gallery Walk tours that originate at the Sun Valley Recreation Center in the Sun Valley Village at 5 p.m. Call 208-622-2135 to make sure she has one that evening. This season’s Gallery Walks: Friday, Nov. 23; Friday, Dec. 28; Friday, Feb. 15; Friday, March 15; and Saturday, May 25. But you don’t need a Gallery Walk to peruse the beautiful art that abounds in the Valley. Be sure to stop in at other galleries not on the Gallery Walks, including Green Antelope Gallery at 116 S. 2nd St. in Bellevue and the studio of Melissa Graves Brown, where she creates her mind-boggling treescapes (208-721-0447 or melissagravesbrown.com).

Sometimes you just don’t feel like strapping a pair of boards or snowshoes onto your feet. If you just want to walk, Sun Valley does a nice job of plowing the bike path along Sun Valley and Elkhorn roads. You’ll find some good Fido walks along Trail Creek Road beginning where the plowing stops. Just remember to pick up after your dog and keep your dog off the groomed Nordic trail that parallels part of the walking path. The Sun Valley Film Festival burst on the scene last March with an impressive lineup of films, including “Bully,” which people saw here just before it made a scene nationally. The festival will build on that success this year with more cuttingedge independent films, premieres, children’s programs, previews of new television and web series, questionand-answer sessions with filmmakers and producers and works depicting Idaho’s gorgeous scenery. Mark your calendars for March 14-17 and tune into sunvalleyfilmfestival.org for updates as they’re posted.

Dollar Mountain has become the Coney Island of winter recreation in Idaho. Sun Valley’s junior mountain boasts 24 new rail features this year, bringing the number of rails and other play features to 76. Among them: a new rail that resembles a roller coaster on rails. The superpipe has been expanded from 18 feet to 22 feet to meet Olympic specifications for Olympic hopefuls. The pipe is one of only a few in the country that meet Olympic standards. And the skier/boardercross course has been extended and redesigned to make it more family friendly. Learn how to use the new features with the popular Sundays in the Park clinics and lessons in the Progression Park and on the Family Cross Course. And look for the Rev Tour—the X-Games junior—in March, along with the collegiate championships March 4-9. Information: sunvalley.com, 888-490-5950 or 208-622-2289.

the big hitch
Ogle Ketchum’s iconic relics—the Horace C. Lewis string ore wagons—at the Ore Wagon Museum across from Ketchum’s city hall at Fifth and East Avenue. The 16-foot-long, 4-foot-wide, 6,400-pound wagons, which stand on 7-foot-tall wheels, used to haul up to 12 tons of silver down the narrow, winding Trail Creek Road from the Bayhorse, Clayton and Challis silver mines. The wagons have been coveted by Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm. They’re brought out each Labor Day weekend and pulled through the streets of Ketchum by a team of mules during the Wagon Days Parade, one of the largest non-motorized parades in the Northwest.

the lure of the line
Throw a saw in your tackle box and head to the dam and lower canyon of Magic Reeservoir south of Bellevue for ice fishing “Grumpy Old Men”-style. Fishermen hold an ice fishing tournament in February (208-487-2571). Or, spend the morning schussing Baldy, then step out of your ski boots into your waders and walk 50 feet to the Big Wood River for some winter fly-fishing. Fishing is permitted on the Wood throughout the year except April and May when the fish are spawning. It can be really fun in March as the days get longer and warmer. For information, check with local fly-fishing shops, such as Sturtevants Mountain Outfitters (208-726-4501), Silver Creek Outfitters (208-726-5282), Ketchum on the Fly (208-726-7572) and Lost River Outfitters (208-726-1706).

You can have one of the grandest views around even if you don’t ski by taking a gondola and the Christmas chair to the top of Bald Mountain. The view encompasses the Pioneer and Smoky mountains as well as the valley below. A lift ticket for a non-skier or non-boarder costs $20 for adults and $10 for children at River Run Lodge. Other grand views: The Boulder Mountains 10 miles north of Ketchum on Highway 75 and the view of the Sawtooth Mountains from the overlook on top of Galena Summit 30 miles north of Ketchum on Highway 75. Once there, you might as well drive another 30 miles to Stanley for yet another gorgeous view of the Sawtooth Mountains.

veg out among the stacks
They say indie bookstores are a dying breed. Not in Ketchum, where Chapter One Bookstore and Iconoclast Books are a vital part of the fabric of the community, staging frequent book signings and always eager to order the few books they don’t have at their fingertips. Chapter One Bookstore, which recently moved into new digs at 340 E. Second St. in Ketchum, has been called one of the great indie bookstores of the Northwest by several national publications, including the just-out “My Bookstore: Writers Celebrate Their Favorite Places to Browse, Read and Shop.” It has a great selection of Hemingway and Sun Valley reads, as well as a wide range of new releases, old classics, rare and one-of-a-kind editions, used books, children’s books and books on wellness and spirituality. Iconoclast Books, at 671 Sun Valley Road, can’t wait to meet each day. They open their doors at 6 a.m., allowing the tantalizing scents from the café’s roasted coffee, premium organic teas, quiches and other goodies to permeate the air. The store frequently has open mic sessions. And look this winter for a new bookstore book club to start up. Information: iconoclastbooks.com or 208-726-1564.

Rainbow’s End Recovery Center …Where the Road Begins
R
ainbow’s End Recovery Center located on the world famous Salmon River in Challis Idaho provides a unique program of fly fishing that gives you new tools in recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Fishing gear and instruction are provided so that clients can learn the delicate art of fly fishing, a therapeutic activity in our pond stocked with Rainbow trout. Afterwards they are ready to go fly fishing in the blue ribbon fishing hole on the Salmon River to hone their skills. It’s the perfect atmosphere for healing and recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Fly fishing requires timing, patience and discipline, all skills which help in a person’s recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Mastering the art of fly fishing, a new skill for many, gives the clients a new contemplative activity which helps in coping with the struggles of overcoming addiction. Fly fishing is comparable to meditation. When standing in the river, one concentrates on nature, fly fishing and playing the fish. Your mind shifts into a lower gear; the rhythm of the river and casting help reduce anxiety and tension. Clients have time for recreational activities daily and often choose to fly fish in the river for this reason. The art of fly fishing is something the client takes with them when they leave Rainbow’s End Recovery Center and can enjoy with family and friends as they continue on their road to sobriety. The Salmon River in Idaho not only provides the opportunity Fly Fishing for Steelhead and Salmon but Fly Fishing for Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat and Bull Trout year round.
