very morning when I look outside and see the sun making magic out of the surroundings here, I realize how blessed I am to call this place home. I love it here for what’s on the outside—the spectacular

mountain ranges, the rippling rivers and the abundance of wildlife. I also delight in all that’s on the inside too—the art and music culture, the shopping, the museums rich with local history as well as the amazing people in the Valley, that I’m

happy to call my neighbors. This winter’s edition of our bi-annual 101 Amazing Things to Do magazine, marks our sixth successful issue of enriching people’s lives, as it includes something for everyone. We hope that you’ll enjoy the

Best of Banff ome of the world’s best films focusing on outdoor sports and adventure travel will be shown Friday and Saturday evenings, Jan. 31 and Feb. 2, at the nexStage Theatre, 120 S. Main St., Ketchum. Among the films receiving rave reviews this year is “North of the Sun,” which features cold-water surfing (brrrrrrr!) by Norwegian surfers who found time to ride a few understandably uncrowded waves while cleaning up a ton of garbage from remote beaches on an Arctic bay off the coast of Norway. The film focuses not just on their breathtaking experience against the backdrop of the Northern Lights but also on the wider impact of garbage, even in remote, uninhabited environments. Advance tickets are $15, available at The Elephant’s Perch and Backwoods Mountain Sports, with proceeds benefitting the Sawtooth Avalanche Center.

Creepy crawly things he Sawtooth Botanical Garden will stage its popular Bug Zoo Festival from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at the garden, which is located a few miles south of Ketchum at Highway 75 and Gimlet Road. Youngsters can examine tarantulas, walking sticks and other exotic insects up close and personal, try on a pair of bug’s eyes to see just what an insect sees, and participate in a variety of arts and crafts projects to teach them about the lives of bugs. Hark! The angels sing he Caritas Chorale will hold its annual Holiday Sing-A-Long at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 14-15 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Sun Valley Road in Sun Valley. CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTINGS

Christmas tree-lighting celebrations un Valley’s annual tree lighting will take place outside the Sun Valley Inn at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21. Free cookies and cocoa will precede the celebration at 5 p.m. amidst a cappella Christmas carols served up by the Sun Valley Carolers. Look for Santa to arrive on a sleigh drawn by a miniature pony as soon as the lights come on to guide his sleigh. Afterwards, head over to the Duchin Lounge for a Vintage Holiday Sweater and Punch Party. Santa will arrive at Ketchum’s tree lighting atop a ﬁre truck. The fun starts at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Town Square across from Atkinsons’ Market. Santa’s truck is expected to arrive about 5 p.m. and the tree will be lit afterwards. The City of Hailey will have its tree lighting on Saturday, Dec. 7, in conjunction with its Hailey Holiday Square in between Jane’s Artifacts and The Mint. The B-Tones and Colla Voce will provide holiday music. The City of Bellevue will have its tree lighting from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. The festivities begin at the Bellevue Museum and continue at Bellevue City Hall for pictures with Santa, warm drinks and treats, horse-drawn hayrides and live performances by local musical groups.

The event, which starts at 5:30 p.m., will feature dinner, auction items and dancing to Boise’s High Street Band, which is always a big hit with its zoot suits and music that takes dancers through the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. The evening will be dedicated to Bonni Curran, who with her husband Peter was a huge supporter of the lodge and the trails. Cupcakes to casting he Hailey Public Library has lined up an intriguing variety of subjects sure to stoke the imaginations of the curious. On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Briann Waddell of Hailey’s Atkinsons’ Market bakery will present a program titled “Crazy For Cupcakes.” On Feb. 4, Fish and Game conservation officer Lee Garwood and wildlife biologist Robin Garwood will discuss where urban and wildlife habitat intersect. On Feb. 11, Bryant Dunn, a Himalayan fly-fishing guide, will discuss fly-fishing in Bhutan and other exotic locales. On March 4, Barb Williams and her dog will demonstrate effective dog training techniques. And on April 8, U.S. Forest Service wildlife biologist David Skinner and his falcon, Gabriel, will make an encore appearance—this time to discuss the flora and fauna of the Wood River Valley. All presentations are on Tuesdays and all start at 6 p.m.

A cornucopia of lights he Sawtooth Botanical Garden, a few miles south of Ketchum at Highway 75 and Gimlet Road, will stage its third year of Lights in the Garden from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, Dec. 12-21. This year’s display will feature more than 60,000 lights formed to represent Christmas trees and other icons of the Christmas season. Cost is $5 per person or $15 per car. Participants are invited to hang out afterwards and enjoy cookies and hot cocoa around the ﬁre.

Connecting women through film UNAFEST will offer nine short films for, by and about women Dec. 7 at the nexStage Theatre in Ketchum. A blast from the past t’s billed as a ski museum, but the Ketchum-Sun Valley Heritage & Ski Museum has plenty more, from an expanded section paying homage to writer Ernest Hemingway to this winter’s exhibit focusing on the Sun Valley Suns hockey team. The museum is located in Ketchum’s old Forest Service Park at First and Washington streets. Hours are noon to 4 p.m. weekdays and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays. 208-726-8118. The Blaine County Historical Museum on Main Street in Hailey is likewise chockfull of interesting exhibits related to the unique life of the Wood River Valley, ranging from a walk-through mine tunnel to a 1929 Ford Roadster in running condition, a turn-ofthe-century kitchen, school room and medical display, and one of the most extensive collections of political buttons in the United States. Gate banging heck your speed on Sun Valley’s NASTAR racing course on the Warm Springs side of Bald Mountain. NASTAR racing starts at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays unless a special event conflicts. Register at 8:30 a.m. at the Race Desk in Warm Springs Lodge. NASTAR is the acronym for National Standard Race—it was developed by SKI Magazine in 1968 to provide recreational racers with an opportunity to compare their scores to friends and family members. It has become the largest public grassroots ski race program in the world. Participants compete within their age and gender groups to win platinum, gold, silver and bronze medals and the chance to compete in the Nature Valley NASTAR National Championships.

Nordic Town USA elebrate all things Nordic when Nordic Town USA stages the Sun Valley Nordic Festival 2014 Jan. 25-Feb. 2. The event kicks off on Saturday, Jan. 25, with the free Ski the Rails beginning at 10 a.m. at Serenade Lane on Ketchum’s southern outskirts—volunteers will be handing out refreshments, pep talks—maybe even a massage or two—as skiers ski 11 miles from Ketchum to Hailey on the groomed bike path. The annual Paw ’n Pole—a family-friendly event pairing dogs with skiers and snowshoers—will be held at noon Sunday, Jan. 26, at Croy Nordic in Hailey. Skiers can take part in a Skiers Breakfast/Brunch from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at Smiley Creek Lodge north of Ketchum. There’ll be a snowshoe tour focusing on the history of the Sawtooth Wilderness at Alturas Lake Ski Area north of Galena Summit from noon to 2 p.m. that day, while a ski tour focuses on the winter wildlife of the Sawtooths from noon to 2 p.m. at Park Creek Ski Area seven miles west of Stanley. Follow that up with an Avalanche Awareness and Safety workshop at Stanley Town Square from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and a Skiers Special Dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. that evening at the Stanley Sluice. Meanwhile, spectators can watch Paralympic biathletes pair skiing with shooting at Lake Creek Nordic Olympic/Paralympic Training Center Stadium on Monday, Jan. 27, and Wednesday, Jan. 29. Skiers are invited to ski with the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation’s elite Gold Team athletes at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 29 at Lake Creek. If you’ve got some ummph left, ski the Harriman Trail with The Vamps coaches, many who were Olympians, U.S. Ski Team members and American Birkebeiner champs, on Jan. 30. Dig out your vintage skis for a Vintage Ski Wander along Trail Creek at the Sun Valley Nordic Center Jan. 30 and then take in the fast-paced Downtown Jam/Nordic Town USA Sprints from 4-8 p.m. Jan. 30 across from the Ketchum Post Ofﬁce. There’ll be food and beer and even a snowbike competition. Saturday, Feb. 1, will see nearly a thousand skinny skiers taking part in the SWIX Boulder Mountain Tour from Galena Lodge to the SNRA Headquarters on Highway 75. The race will be followed by live music at 7 p.m. in the Sun Valley Center for the Arts ﬁeld in downtown Ketchum. Skinny skiing stensibly, they call Nordic skiing skinny skiing because you do it on skis barely an inch wide. But it also has a reputation as being a bun-buster when it comes to exorcising those calories you racked up in one of those pastries from The Konditeroi. Ski The Elevator at Sun Valley Nordic or Psycho at Galena Lodge if you’re up for a rip-roaring schuss downhill. Or take it easy on one of the loops out Croy Nordic in Hailey. Dogs are welcome on trails surrounding the SNRA seven miles north of Ketchum, as well as Billy’s Bridge and a couple trails outside Galena Lodge. They’re also welcome at small loops at Sun Valley Nordic, Croy and, of course, the entire bike path from Ketchum to Bellevue, which you and your dog can ski for free. There are 32 kilometers of trails at Alturas Lake 34 miles north of Ketchum and Park Creek 65 miles north of Ketchum, available to ski with a donation of $5 requested. Sun Valley Opera he pirates are coming! The Gilbert and Sullivan Players will stage “The Pirates of Penzance” Feb. 22 at the Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater on the Community Campus in Hailey. The swashbuckling program is part of Sun Valley Opera’s second annual Opera Festival, which this year dotes on “all things Gilbert and Sullivan.” The festival kicks off Feb. 19 with a lecture on light opera by Wood River Valley’s music-meister R.L. Rowsey. A Diva Party featuring soprano Suzanne Vinnik, who has performed at Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center, follows on Feb. 20 in the Sun Valley Lodge Dining Room. Wagons ho! heck out Ketchum’s magniﬁcent Big Hitch ore wagons at the Ore Wagon Museum near Fifth and East streets in Ketchum. These tall skinny wagons, which measure up to 16 feet long and weigh 6,400 pounds empty, carried up to 24,000 pounds— that’s 12 tons—of ore and mining supplies as they navigated the precipitous Trail Creek Road between Ketchum and mines in Bayhorse, Clayton, Challis, Bonanza and Custer. SUN VALLEY ARTIST SERIES CONCERTS

Classical renditions he Fifth Annual Sun Valley Artist Series kicks off Monday, Dec. 30, with a performance by the Claremont Trio from New York, which played to a sold-out audience during last year’s Christmas season. Pianist Jerome Rose, who has been called “the last Romantic of our age,” will follow up on Feb. 8 with a concert featuring works by such romantic and classical music composers as Beethoven, Chopin and Schubert. Young cellist David Requiero, winner of the Naumburg International Violoncello Competition, and New York pianist Solon Gordon will perform moving work written by Frederic Chopin, on March 13. All concerts will take place at 7 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood in Ketchum. As always, Series Artistic Director Susan Spelius Gannon will present an entertaining and informal “Meet the Artists” onstage interview at 6:15 p.m. before each concert. And audience members can meet the artists oneon-one around nibbles following the concert. Family of Woman Film Festival ero in on an illiterate Bedouin woman—“Solar Mama”—who learns to make and maintain solar panels at Barefoot University in India. Meet women living in a stilt city on the water in Brazil in “Bay of All Saints.” These films are among five that will be shown March 7-9 at the Sun Valley Opera House as part of the Family of Woman Film Festival.
