We want this winter and spring season to be unforgettably fun for you! Luckily, you’re already at least two steps ahead of the curve toward making that happen; you’re in the right place – Blaine County, Idaho (aka “5B”) – and you have the right tool in your hands – 101 Things To Do by The Weekly Sun. So, welcome to our Winter + Spring 2018 issue of THE Insider’s Guide To The Best Kept Secrets Of The Wood River Valley & Beyond. Within these pages you’ll find all the local knowledge you need to maximize your time in the area, whether you’re here for a day, a week, a month or the whole season. For this guide, we focus on activities that are doable on any budget. Most of the things to do in this guide are free. Those that aren’t can be enjoyed for a minimal fee that we felt would not be a significant barrier to entry. We’ve categorized the entries by location to make it easy for you to navigate. If you’re in a certain part of 5B and are looking for something to do, all you need to do is flip to that section in the guide and see what catches your eye! Also, if you’re in the mood for a day trip or to explore a place that’s a bit off the beaten path, check out the “Day Trips” section. Lastly, the “All Valley” category includes activities that are located outside the city limits of any of the five cities in Blaine County or that can be enjoyed throughout the entire Wood River Valley area. We’ve also included some activities in Stanley. There’s so much fun to be had in the Stanley area, and it’s so close to Blaine County, we thought it would be great to give our readers a few ideas of things to do there. Lastly, if you’re looking for more local news and event info, pick up a copy of The Weekly Sun newspaper, on stands in Bellevue, Carey, Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley. It’ll keep you in the loop on what to know and where to be. Keep in mind this magazine is not a comprehensive list of things to do around here. There’s no end to the ways in which you can fill your time in these parts. (Have an idea for our next issue? Drop us a line and let us know! 101@theweeklysun.com). This is simply a point of departure. So what are you waiting for? Explore… – Brennan Rego, Publisher

The Wood River Valley is known for its sophisticated art scene. Gallery Walks provide a great way to view t h o u g h t- p r o voking art, tour the galleries of Ketchum while meeting local and visiting artists. Members of the Sun Valley Gallery Association host several Gallery Walks throughout the year, enticing thousands of visitors and locals with a variety of intriguing artwork. Galleries represent artists with a wide range of mediums, including, but not limited to, painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and glasswork. This season, Gallery Walks will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, Friday, Feb. 16, and Friday, March 9. Prearranged private gallery tours are available to interested groups. GALENDE QAUFFING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Bottoms up!
5
One of the more uproarious events held at the base of Warm Springs is the Galende Quaffing Championships on Saturday, April 7. Teams of four rotate around a long table; one end of the table is for sliding beers, one end is for catching beers. Participants can only catch the sliding beer mug after it slides off the table, then they drink it (duh). The annual event celebrates a freewheeling attitude towards the mountain lifestyle while throwing a few beers down a table while raising money. 12

BREAKFAST
& LUNCH
One of the most beloved of activities in the winter is just cozying up by a fireplace. Public fireplaces where anyone is welcome to warm their hands, noses and toes include all the ski lodges, The Community Library in Ketchum and many restaurants and hotel lobbies, such as the inviting one at the Sun Valley Lodge.
FISHING
22
22
Scenic solitude
A winter backdrop provides a truly unique fishing experience; many local fishermen consider the winter months to be the absolute best time to fish in the Valley. With not much food available, trout are eager to bite your fly. Not all the local waters remain open to catch-and-release fishing so make sure to check regulations, or with your favorite fly shop. With few anglers out and about, it’s easy to find solitude. The Big Wood River is renowned for the remarkable dry-fly opportunities present all winter, and fishing stays open through March. Silver Creek Preserve is open through February in certain sections. The Big Lost River is open year-round, and the South Fork of the Boise River is also a great venue for winter fishing through March. Ice fishing is another popular activity on Magic Reservoir, 45 minutes south of Sun Valley, but be sure to check the ice conditions before you head out. 101 Things To Do | Winter + Spring 2018

GARDEN MEDITATION
Nature nurtures
The Sawtooth Botanical Garden is a homegrown natural resource for native flora and fauna. The garden serves to link visitors to the unique species of plant life thriving at high altitudes and hopes to also inspire its visitors on the topics of environmental stewardship and sustainable care for our ecosystems. SBG features several distinct garden zones, plus a garden center and greenhouse. Truly stunning and unique is the garden’s prayer wheel, which contains one million hand-painted prayers on individual pieces of paper. The prayer wheel weighs 400 pounds and was handmade by goldsmiths and painters in Dharamshala, India. His Holiness the Dalai Lama blessed the wheel in person during a visit to the Valley in 2005. Enjoy a peaceful meditation at the base of the prayer wheel and breathe in the scents of winter. The Sawtooth Botanical Garden is located at 11 Gimlet Rd., south of Ketchum. HOT SPRINGS

Soak in Frenchman’s Bend
A favorite natural hot springs is Frenchman’s Bend, open daily from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thermally heated to a piping 110 degrees, this natural spring is better than any resort hot tub. The hot spring is wide and shallow, rock-walled with gravel and sand bottoms, and sees a steady flow of visitors almost every night. The scenery is spectacular and the people are generally very nice. This is family friendly and not a place for nude bathing! Follow Warm Springs Road past Bald Mountain. Once the pavement turns into a dirt road, continue for 7 miles, park on the side of the road.

NORDIC SKIING
Scenic winter wonderlands
SNOWMOBILING
Blaine County Recreation District manages, maintains and grooms over 160 kilometers of terrain, including over 50 kilometers of trails around Galena Lodge located in the heart of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Bring your furry friend along for the ride by purchasing a Dog Pass, good for all designated BCRD Nordic “dog trails.” For more information on trail options, a map and passes, visit bcrd.org/skiing-snowshoeing. php. Nordic skiing is also welcome on the Wood River Trail. Imagined by a group of visionary citizens and realized by the Blaine County Recreation Disrict with the support of the community, the main artery of the year-round Wood River Trail is more than 20 miles long, connecting Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley. Completely resurfaced and renewed, the trail system has peerless views of local scenery and nature.
28
28
Rev your engines
For those who like to hit the throttle, the Wood River Valley offers more than 500 miles of snowmobiling trails. Some of the locals’ favorite spots to ride include the Baker Creek area, 10 miles north of Ketchum, and the rolling terrain near Rotarun Ski Area, about three miles west of Hailey in Croy Canyon. Traverse some 170 miles in the Sawtooth Valley via snowmobile rental with the help of Smiley Creek Lodge. The Lodge, located 37 miles north of Ketchum on Highway 75, offers guided and self-guided trail rides. For more information, visit smileycreeklodge.com or call (208) 774-3547.

SNOWSHOEING
Be one with nature by foot
29
Like Nordic skiing, snowshoeing is one of the most enjoyable ways to get out into the wilderness, even if it’s just on trails near town. Snowshoeing in the wilderness is free and available to all; you don’t even need a track. At the Sun Valley Nordic & Snowshoe Center you can find all you need in the way of rentals and official trails, as well as through the Blaine County Recreation District and various sports shops. Check the Sawtooth National Recreation Area where snowshoe trails can be found along the Harriman at North Fork Loop, Billy’s Bridge and at Galena Lodge.

STARGAZING
Just look up!
The Wood River Valley’s winter display of alpine sunrises and sunsets is nothing short of spectacular. Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve encompasses portions of Blaine and Custer counties including Ketchum, Smiley Creek, Stanley, Sun Valley and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Also, the elevation is a huge factor, along with the longstanding “Dark Sky” ordinances that limit light pollution at night, resulting in striking star shows nearly every evening throughout the winter. When in Hailey, to savor the views of both the skies and the town below, take a hike up Carbonate Mountain. Drive west on Bullion Street, cross the Big Wood River, park on the right, go through the wooden fence and follow the well-marked trail. When in Ketchum, for the same effect, take an easy walk up Knob Hill. Drive north, uphill, on East Avenue for a few blocks till you reach an obvious parking lot at the end of the road. Hop out and follow the path to the top. Stargazing at Craters of the Moon is another great idea. (See Day Trips for more information on Craters).

UFO HUNTING
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s an alien!
33
Located on the East Fork of the Big Wood River, Triumph is an old mining town gone bust. Urban legend has it that the area is a hotspot for extraterrestrial activity. Numerous “sightings” have been documented over the decades, and now it’s your turn. Grab a pair of binoculars, a blanket and some snacks for an old-fashioned stakeout. Head out to Triumph around dusk and turn your head toward the sky. Look for anything out of the ordinary or strange light patterns in the atmosphere. Who knows? You might just glimpse something out of this world. To get here from downtown Ketchum, head south on Highway 75 for 5.8 miles and turn left onto East Fork Road. Follow the road for another 5.8 miles to your destination.
WILDLIFE WATCHING
Look up, down and around
34
Inspiring scenery and wildlife are abundant in and around the Wood River Valley. Phantom Hill is just north of the Sawtooth National Recreational Area visitor’s headquarters, approximately 8 miles north of Ketchum on Highway 75. You may see moose, deer, elk, wolves and pronghorn in this area. For best wildlife viewing, plan to go out early morning or late evening. If driving after dark, drive under the recommended speed limit as wildlife may be on the road. Be sure to check with Idaho Fish and Game for any further wildlife questions or regulations, at idfg.idaho.gov.
WOOD RIVER TRAILS

Known to locals simply as the bike path, the Wood River Trail is a 20-mile system of paved multi-use trails connecting the communities of the Valley. In the winter, it’s full of Nordic skiers, walkers and dogs out for a lark. On Saturday, Feb. 10, join Ski the Rails, a free cross-country ski tour along the Wood River Trail. Check bcrd.org for more information.

Bellevue’s historic Old Town Hall and Jail is located on Hwy. 75 at 226 N. Main St. The fire hall in the front and larger portion of the building was erected in 1890 and housed Bellevue’s original fire equipment. The bell on the tower rang to announce a fire, a common occurrence in an era of candles, woodburning stoves, tired miners and saloon brawlers. The smaller back portion of the building was added as a city hall. The original jail was built in 1881 of heavy squared timbers and still stands on the same lot. Inside the museum there are vintage clothing displays, family photos and other memorabilia from founding families.

HOT SPRINGS
Soak away stress
42
A trip to one of Idaho’s natural hot springs is a must for locals and visitors alike. Soak and revitalize amidst nature’s glory at the Carey Hot Springs, a black lava-rock pool with a gravel bottom approximately 12 feet across and roughly 4 feet deep. Although the springs are on public land, the pool itself is on a parcel owned by the Milford Sweat family. The owners don’t mind people using the pool as long as they don’t abuse the privilege. Please don’t bring soap, shampoo or glass containers to this site and be sure to pack out what you pack in. Bring towels, water and floaties, if you’re so inclined. The Carey Hot Springs is located off U.S. 26/93/20 about 9 miles north of the Carey Airport. Look for the rising steam.

WINTER CHECKLIST BUILD A SNOWMAN
Chilly pals
45
45
Find a flat location for your snowman and gather surrounding snow, shaping it into a large, dense ball. Roll the ball in the snow and it will grow larger. Make two more balls, each a little smaller than the previous, and stack them largest to smallest from the ground up. Use carrots, coal, sticks and other accessories to decorate.
46 BUILD A SNOW FORT
Hideout in style
46
Building a snow fort is a fun pastime of winter. First, use packed snow to form walls. If you use bricks made of snow, work like a bricklayer; if you’re digging a fort into a snowdrift, use a shovel or your hands and burrow your way into the pile. Once you make an entrance, clear out a room from the inside with your hands or a small shovel. Be sure to pack the outside of your walls with a shovel. Finally, pour water over the fort for a protective layer of ice.
47 BUNDLE, HUDDLE AND CUDDLE
Ways to keep warm
47
Bundling was a way to keep warm and get to know one another for betrothed couples in colonial America. The prospective bride’s parents were usually in the same room with them, and (though some cheated) there wasn’t supposed to be any contact of a sexual nature. Huddling, a scientific behavior for survival, is defined as crowding together or nestling closely, somewhat like penguins do. Cuddling, whether with a romantic partner, a friend or family, not only transfers warmth, but the act releases oxytocin, the feel-good hormone. Let’s get cozy and keep someone warm.

MAKE SOMEONE’S DAY
51
Spread good karma
Choose kindness by shoveling a neighbor’s pathway or plow a driveway; leave a special note for a stranger in a public place. Create your letter however you see fit, but make sure to include a positive message and the date. You don’t need to include your name; the good karma will find its way back to you. Put your letter in an envelope and write “Just For You” on the front. Place the envelope in a place with a lot of foot traffic, such as a store (if the owners agree to it) or on a playground. You may never know who might pick up your note, but you just might make their day.
RENT A MOVIE

SNOWKITING
Wind power
Save money on a lift pass and go snowkiting instead, using skis or a snowboard. Any wide-open area on a windy day will do. Most locals will go north on Highway 75 to Phantom Hill, or south to the Camas Prairie, depending on where the wind is blowing best. Both inflatable kites and foils will work, though snowkiting enthusiasts generally prefer foils because it’s easier and quicker to transport and set up, especially when it’s cold and windy. For more information on foils to use, see Ozone (flyozone. com), HQ (hq-kites-usa.com) and Prism (prismkites.com).

Education News A Lesson Learned During ‘Educator For A Day’
“How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn.” ~Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss
57
At the Blaine County Historical Museum visitors explore the Wood River Valley’s pioneer past, research family histories and view vignettes of mines, schools, ranches, famous literary personalities, period fashions and political memorabilia. Each display shows aspects of the life that early inhabitants and pioneers experienced. The museum celebrates mining heritage with a walk-through replica of a mine tunnel, samples of ore taken from our hills, an assay furnace from 1890, a surveying transit, an ore wagon model and numerous photos from the heyday of mining. The museum commemorates local ranching heritage with a blacksmith’s corner, a collection of handmade barbed wire and pictures of sheep shearing from the olden days. Additionally, the museum holds one of the country’s largest collections of buttons and other items from political campaigns. Blaine County Historical Museum is located at 218 North Main St. For more information, visit bchistoricalmuseum.org or call (208) 788-1801. 101 Things To Do |Winter + Spring 2018

There are several popular locations in Hailey for dog owners to take their companions, but Hop Porter Park and Draper Wood River Preserve are two of the best. Draper Wood River Preserve is arguably one of the most scenic locations in the Wood River Valley. Follow Bullion Street west, past Hop Porter Park and across the bridge. Take your first left at the Hailey Greenway sign and follow the dirt road to the left of Lions Park baseball field. Explore the river with your pooch, and visit the Croy Creek Wetlands Boardwalk, cross the Bow Bridge and the heart rock tree. Just make sure to pack up by sundown, as the area closes at dark. One of Hailey’s most popular parks is Lawrence Heagle Park, a 3.5-acre park suited for all kinds of activities. In addition to its natural beauty, the park contains a large covered group pavilion, several individual picnic areas and public restrooms. The kids can enjoy the playground, complete with several slides and swings, while you warm up with some hot chocolate and capture some memories. The park is located in the Della View subdivision, along War Eagle Drive. Offering the largest playground in Hailey, Hop Porter Park is often packed with local children year-round. The 4.3-acre play area is great for all ages and includes a multifaceted wooden construction with suspension bridge, multiple slides and lots of nooks and crannies for an exciting game of hide-and-seek. Hop Porter Park also offers a covered group pavilion, with barbecue and picnic tables aplenty. Bring the family to this park for a day of old fashioned fun and set the kids loose into the playground. Hop Porter Park is located on West Bullion Street, just west of Main St. Old Cutters has a new 5-acre park with two play sets, one for toddlers and one for children; a large playing field; barbecue pits with picnic tables. It’s adjacent to hiking trails on BLM land and close to the Wood River Trail System. Off of Highway 75, turn east on Myrtle St. and follow directly into Old Cutters. The park is in the middle, up against the hills.

Christiania, Pioneer, gravesite, house, museum
The Christiania on Sun Valley Rd. looks much the same as when Papa ate there for his last meal, with his fourth wife Mary, on July 1, 1961. The Christy, as it’s locally known, is located at 303 Walnut Ave. at the corner of Sun Valley Rd. Originally a casino, The Pioneer Saloon is where you can imagine Ernest bellied up to the bar, surrounded by mounted hunting trophies. In fact, there is a display of Hemingway artifacts on the wall. The Pio is located at 320 N. Main St. No reservations. For information, call (208) 726-3139. Hemingway’s gravesite is located between three large evergreen trees (which his fourth wife Mary planted and maintained) in the middle of the Ketchum Cemetery. The large, flat gravestone is easy to spot. Visitors often place pennies on the grave and can also find the graves of Mary; granddaughter Margot; and friends Gene Van Guilder and Taylor Williams. The Hemingway House and Preserve, bought in 1959, sits on a hillside on the edge of a 14-acre nature preserve. After Mary’s death, the home, along with 10 acres of property surrounding it, including one mile along the Big Wood River, is now part of The Community Library. There remain no public tours, and the home and preserve are on a private drive. The home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Community Library hosts an Ernest Hemingway Festival every September, and the Library’s Sun Valley Museum of History has a permanent “Hemingway in Idaho” exhibition, in Forest Service Park, 180 E. First St. For information, call (208) 726-8118, or comlib.org/museum.

ORE WAGON MUSEUM
See ‘The Big Hitch’
Inside the Ore Wagon Museum, the historic Lewis Fast Freight Ore Wagons sit silent after years of hard work. In their heyday the Lewis Fast Freight Line, also known as “The Big Hitch,” maneuvered up and down the dangerous Trail Creek Rd., the span of which was no wider than the wagons themselves. The wagons chronicle the rich mining history of the Wood River Valley – the industry that put Ketchum on the map. The largest of the wagons that traversed the Valley and the largest of the remaining collection, the Lewis Lead, carried more that 18,000 pounds on a daily basis, a respectable load even among similar sized haulers of the day. The wagons carried loads of information and provisions as well as ore to surrounding communities. The Lewis Wagons are the only ones of their kind in existence. Seven wagons make up the Ore Wagon Museum collection. The Ore Wagon Museum is located at Fifth St. and East Ave., across from Ketchum City Hall. The interpretive display can be seen under the covered porch on the south side of the building. Visitors wanting to enter the building should check in at City Hall, across the street.

THE SUMMER SLIDE
84
What is the Summer Slide? Summer Slide is the academic loss children experience during the extended summer break from school.
Located in the historic Forest Service Park, the Sun Valley Museum of History features exhibition spaces and a collections center. Under The Community Library’s direction, the 1933 buildings, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, showcase exhibits that detail the region’s cultural heritage: from the first inhabitants, to miners and ranchers, to destination skiers, to artists and athletes. View historic photos of Ketchum and Sun Valley and learn about Ernest Hemingway’s life in Idaho. For more information, visit comlib.org/museum.
Children who don’t read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect.

Located at 491 Sun Valley Rd., the Sun Valley/Ketchum Visitor Center serves as a hub for locals and visitors alike. The building was renovated in 2011 to include a Starbucks café and won an American Architecture Award in 2012 for its design. Inside, find information about public transportation, maps and flyers, a public conference room, restrooms, food and drink and a bulletin board for local happenings. Sometimes the Visitor Center and Starbucks will host live music. Stop in, meet the locals and grab a cup o’ joe or hot chocolate. The Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call (800) 634-3347 or (208) 726-3423. 101 Things To Do |Winter + Spring 2018

WINTER TRACKING
Snowshoe adventure

Environmental Resource Center, at 471 Washington St., offers a series of winter tracking workshops with longtime Valley resident and tracker extraordinaire, Ann Christensen on Saturdays, Dec. 30, Jan. 13, Feb 10. from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Ann begins each workshop with a short tracking introduction at the ERC office in Ketchum. Participants then head outside on a snowshoe tracking adventure through the fields and woods north of town. Christensen, who studied with famous tracker and author James Halfpenny, has been introducing Valley residents to the secret stories left in the snow for decades. This is a donation-based activity. Erected in 1966, the moving Hemingway memorial is on the right about 1.5 miles past Sun Valley Lodge on Sun Valley Road. Room 206 was where Papa first stayed and wrote while visiting Sun Valley in 1939. Now, there’s much larger and fancier digs that honor him, the Hemingway Suite, located in the refurbished lodge. The rustic Trail Creek Cabin, built in about 1937, was where Hemingway hobnobbed with such pals as Gary Cooper, who starred in the film version of Hemingway’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Sleigh rides to Trail Creek are a treat for everyone. For reservations, call (208) 622-2135.

GHOST TOWNS
Deserted mining areas
98
If you can’t find a ghost town, you ain’t in the West. Fortunately, the area has a plethora of ghost towns, ranging from Bullion City west of Hailey to Boulder City nestled in the Boulder Mountains opposite Cathedral Pines about 10 miles north of Ketchum (where local resident Clint Eastwood filmed “Pale Rider”). Bonanza and Custer are also worth a day trip. Head north on Hwy. 75 over Galena Summit toward Stanley. Bonanza lies 58 miles northeast of Stanley off of U.S. 93 on the Yankee Fork Road. View the old tombstone cemetery at Bonanza where you’ll learn how many miners and their families succumbed to avalanches. Check out the historical artifacts in the old schoolhouse in Custer and marvel at the dredge that plied the Yankee Fork of the Salmon River for riches, upturning every rock in its wake. If you care to go farther east on U.S. 93, stop in at the Clayton Museum and the old ghost town of Bayhorse, which is after Clayton but before Challis. It’s worth seeing for its mill, kilns and Wells Fargo building.

Silver Creek Preserve

Starting in 1939, the author Ernest Hemingway began visiting Silver Creek. It became one of his favorite hunting and fishing spots. His eldest son, Jack, was instrumental is protecting it as a preserve in 1976. Now part of The Nature Conservancy, the preserve draws visitors from all 50 states and more than a dozen countries. The fly-fishing is legendary, of course, but the preserve is filled with wildlife and beautiful vistas, and is one of the most beloved places in the Sun Valley area. Drive south through Bellevue, bear left onto Gannett road and follow to the end. Turn right, and then left onto Kilpatrick Bridge Rd. and follow to the end, 165 Kilpatrick Bridge Rd.
