BLAINE COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUM TO HONOR WOMEN OF THE VALLEY

he Heritage Court, a project of the Blaine County Historical Museum now in its 14th year, will honor four women this year at several community events. The women are: Betty Murphy, representing Ketchum; Sue Rowland, representing Hailey; Grace Eakin, representing Bellevue; and Edith Conrad, representing Carey.

Each Heritage Court member is chosen for contributions to their town over the course of at least 30 years. They must be at least 70 years old.

This year’s activities for the Heritage Court will begin with an invitation-only tea hosted by The Community Library at the Sun Valley Museum of History, on May 19. The gala coronation of the ladies, which is open to the public, will be held at the Liberty Theater in Hailey on Sunday, June 11. In July, the Senior Connection in Hailey will host a luncheon for this year’s ladies, as well as past Heritage Court

Grace Eakin, of Bellevue, has been named this year to the 14th annual Heritage Court, a project of the Blaine County Historical Museum honoring women for their role in building the Wood River Valley.

Shortly after Eakin married husband, Jim, in June of 1957, they moved to the Wood River Valley. Jim had taken a position as an extension agent for the University of Idaho, and Grace found a job teaching English and home economics at the old high school in Hailey.

“We rented a house in Hailey, and we were here ever since,” said Eakin.

She taught at the high school for a year and a half and had child care lined up to return, but when her son was born, he was just “too cute,” and she chose to leave, opting to be a stay-at-home mother. Over the next eight years she would have six more children—two more boys and four girls, two of whom are fraternal twins.

When her husband took a job at the Cove Ranch, the family moved to Bellevue, and then, in 1969, “we bought the ranch,” said Eakin.

It is the same property she still lives on today. There they raised registered Hereford cows and “the grain and hay and whatever

else we needed,” Eakin said.

She milked cows for her family and to feed those calves that couldn’t be with their mothers for various reasons. She also sold some, as well.

Living on the ranch with seven children led her to become involved in 4-H. Eakin was active in the livestock program and started a cooking club for boys when her eldest was 9 or 10.

“My oldest son has turned into a good cook,” she said.

She helped her children raise steers and heifers and dairy heifers, and would ensure everyone was set when it came time for the fair, a task only those who have had children show large livestock truly understand. Her husband also participated in 4-H and was instrumental in building the 4-H camp north of Ketchum and constructing the buildings at the fairgrounds in Carey.

During this period Eakin also worked as a homemaker for the elderly, a program through the College of Southern Idaho.

“We went into people’s homes and cleaned for them or took them to the doctor,” she said.

It was through this program that Eakin eventually enrolled in classes to become certified as a nurse’s aide, a task that called for almost two dozen trips to Twin Falls for training.

“I worked privately after I got my credentials,” said Eakin, and

she continued assisting the elderly in the Valley for years.

Eakin has served as secretary for the Wood River Valley Irrigation District for 35 years, and is a 50-year member of The Order of the Eastern Star in Gooding, an associate body of the Masonic fraternity. She serves as chaplain for the Upper Big Wood River Grange, an agricultural advocacy group, and is active on the board of the Bellevue Historical Society. Eakin also enjoys taking art classes at the College of Southern Idaho in Hailey and is involved in its walking club, where she meets with the group up to three times a week.

ANNUAL TEACHER CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS WIND DOWN

Blaine County School District and teachers reach agreements

fter four sessions in late April and early May, the annual negotiations between the Blaine County Education Association, representing the teachers, and the Blaine County School District, are winding down. A final session will be held Wednesday, May 17, at the Community Campus Minnie Moore Room at 4 p.m.

The public is invited to attend.

So far, both parties have agreed on several points.

Elementary teachers in position of leadership, known as “lead teachers,” will continue to receive a stipend. Carey School will have two such teachers.

The school district brought $200,000 in new money to the negotiating table for health in-

surance. Allotted is $110,000 for the increase in health insurance premiums for all district employees, with the remaining $90,000 divvied up between teachers (60 percent) and classified employees (40 percent) as a one-time bonus. Teachers who qualify will also be allowed to move onto the salary schedule and thus receive a pay raise.

The bereavement leave was extended from four to five days.

Both parties agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding mandating the school board to explore additional revenue sources.

“The board of trustees has a fiduciary responsibility to the community to fully fund education in Blaine County,” said Marritt Wolfrom, teacher negotiator. “The board cannot close

the achievement gap, a mandate they have given the superintendent, through cuts to staff, cuts to supply budgets, cuts to transportation and maintenance, and increased class sizes. All this does is increase workloads and decrease the quality of education for the families and students of Blaine County.”

The process is “challenging,

especially with such a small amount on the table, but it was overall amicable,” said Trustee Ellen Mandeville, who represents the school board at the negotiating table. “The May 17 session will address some housecleaning issues in matters of policy.”

The date was chosen due to the busy calendar of Superinten-

dent Gwen Carol Holmes.

Teachers and the school board will need to ratify the agreement in two separate votes. The school district’s annual budget will be finalized once this process is done. The board will vote on the budget during its June 13 meeting. tws

TWO CHALLENGERS RUN FOR SCHOOL BOARD

O

U.S. 30 Paving Project To Begin Friday

A full-width paving project of U.S. 30 between Hansen and the Twin Falls County line will begin next week. The work will improve the ride quality for motorists, and the new pavement will extend the life of the roadway. The paving portion of the work will be complete by mid-June, with a seal coat to follow later in the summer.

The nine-mile project will begin Friday, May 12. Drivers can expect delays of up to 15 minutes. The contractor will reduce traffic to one lane from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. A 45-mph speed limit and a 14-foot width limit will be in effect throughout the construction zone. Idaho Materials and Construction, of Twin Falls, is the contractor for the $1.5 million project.

n Tuesday, May 16, residents of south Hailey, Bellevue and Ketchum will head to the polls to elect representatives to the Blaine County School District Board of Trustees. Hailey resident Kelly Green is challenging incumbent board member Cami Bustos in Zone 2 while Ketchum resident Johnny Galgano is challenging incumbent Rob Clayton in Zone 4.

The Weekly Sun: Why did you choose to run for the school board?

Kelly Green: I chose to run because I saw needs in our district. We need a board that will collaborate together and function well. Our students need a board that works together respectfully with the superintendent. We need trustees who commit their time and talents to being the best board member they can and are truly dedicated to the students and want what’s best for them.

TWS: What is your background?

KG: I am originally from Green River, Wyo. I attended the University of Wyoming and earned a B.S. in civil engineering. In October of 2005, I moved here with my husband, Marc.

I worked for POWER Engineers as a civil engineer almost four years and then became a stay-at-home mother to my four children. Soon, three of them will attend Blaine County schools. I worked for BCSD as a substitute teacher for four years and I am certified to teach secondary math.

TWS: What are your strengths and weaknesses?

KG: I truly care for the welfare of our students and district. I have a strong desire for all students to be prepared for their future. I am committed to do all that is required as a board member. I am optimistic and have a vision of how great our district can be. I enjoy working with other people and am willing to learn.

The only weakness I foresee is my inexperience as a board member, but there are workshops for new board members that I will attend to make sure I can do the best work I can.

TWS: Why should you be elected instead of the incumbent?

KG: I will attend all scheduled meetings and be prepared to make decisions. I will collaborate with other board members and our superintendent to address the needs of our district. I will do my homework, research, and consult with knowledgeable personnel to make sure I understand every agenda item.

TWS: What will be the greatest challenge facing the school district in the years to come?

KG: Our district will need creativity in keeping our budget balanced and making sure we aren’t cutting necessary

items. In addition to the budget, we need to make sure our students are reaching their benchmarks and we are encouraging them to achieve above and beyond what is required.

TWS: How will you stay in touch with the patrons in your zone?

KG: Once elected, a trustee represents all individuals in the school district. I will make certain I am available to talk with or meet anyone located anywhere in our district who wants to discuss concerns. I plan to visit all schools in our district to talk with staff, building administrators, and students.

TWS: Are there any specific problems in your zone that you want to address?

KG: Again, a trustee is a representative of all county residents and students. Zone 2 is very diverse in race, area, and economic standing. Children in this zone can and do attend all our elementary schools, soon to be three middle schools, and the three high schools. The problems I see are spread across different schools and age groups. Our student achievement can always improve and I want to close the learning and opportunity gaps between students I have seen reported. As answered previously, I also want to see all students reaching beyond the benchmark. At the high school level, I want to improve the percentage of students graduating and going on to earn a higher education or learning a trade.

A

nne Marie Deffé lives in a very musical household with a close extended family. When she was younger, Deffé would watch her older cousin on stage dressed in a black sparkling dress and performing with Wood River High School’s young women’s vocal performing group, Colla Voce.

“I wore my black sparkly dress so I could match them,” said Deffé with a laugh.

Now, as a junior at WRHS, Deffé wears the real dress and has performed with Colla Voce for the past two years.

“Getting in as a sophomore was such a cool thing,” she said.

After a rocky freshman year, Deffé found her stride, both academically and with the group of young women whom she sees as family. She talks passionately about the friendships she’s made, and how they have connected through music, and the advancements she’s made in her education. At one time Deffé was a C student but, over the last couple of years, she’s realized her potential.

“It’s cool to be able to be in these AP [Advanced Placement] classes and doing well,” she said.

“My freshman-year self probably would have fainted.”

Going into her sophomore year, Deffé took a trip back East, where her mother is from, and decided that she would like to attend college there, spurring her on academically. She just recently took the SAT, advancing her toward her East Coast-university goal.

“My mom went to Boston University, and I just got into a summer program there,” Deffé said.

“I think it should be a lot of fun.”

In the two-week residential program at B.U., Deffé will

study “abnormal psychology” and “journey in film and literature.”

Deffé rises at 5:30 a.m. each school day to be on time to the zero-hour class in which Colla Voce practice is held at 6:45 a.m.

This year she also stepped into the role as leader for the second sopranos.

“I think it helped me become more responsible,” says Deffé of her leadership role.

This rigorous schedule is worth it to Deffé.

“The closest thing I could compare it to is magic. You can make everyone feel all these emotions by being onstage.”

Deffé and the rest of the Colla Voce members are currently preparing for “A Night at the Liberty.”

Deffé is “diving into the music right now,” as she and her group learn the new music for the performance and, while it is a lot of work, Deffé says that in the music and Colla Voce, “it’s a place I can go to be calm.”

The performance is free to the public and will be held May 18, 19 and 20 at the Liberty Theater in Hailey starting at 7 p.m. each night.

Deffé also finds time to be a member of Compassionate Leaders, a group with the Flourish Foundation. This summer she will be traveling with the program to Mexico on a community service trip. There, they will help two different schools—one for children with mental disabilities and the other a school specifically for children who must work jobs in order to financially assist their families.

If Deffé could give advice to her younger self, it would be: “Don’t limit yourself to what you think you can do because, in reality, you’re capable of so much more.” tws

looding in Blaine County has reached proportions not seen in a decade. Extreme flood years preceding this one were in 1983, 1996 and 2007, although this is by far the most severe.

By Monday morning, the Big Wood River in Hailey had risen to 7.82 feet before leveling off at about 7.6 feet later in the day.

Flood stage is 6 feet. The National Weather Service anticipates fluctuations on the river for at least the next five days. Historically, the Big Wood River will reach its peak flows toward the end of May into early June.

On Monday, Lt. Gov. Brad Little, serving as Idaho’s acting governor while Gov. Butch Otter is on vacation, declared a state of emergency in Blaine County.

In Hailey, roads closed in the Della View area on the Big Wood River include War Eagle, Triumph, Red Elephant, Della Vista, and a portion of Cedar Street. Other roads in the area are open to local traffic only. Several houses had power shut off as groundwater rose into crawl spaces, basements and garages.

“We don’t know how long the road closures will be in place or if we’ll need to put in additional closures,” Craig Aberbach, Hailey Fire and Rescue chief, said. “Right now the river is flooding in ways we’ve not previously seen. It’s important that residents in flood-prone areas not currently affected by the floods get prepared now.”

Last weekend, the City of Ketchum distributed 1,500 sandbags to residents battling rising floodwaters. On Wednesday morning, the community will help fill another 3,000 sandbags at the Ketchum Street Department at 200 10th St. E. Residents are encouraged to come help fill and distribute them.

“We recognize the challenges residents are facing right now and are taking every possible step to help respond to the threats posed by flooding,” Jim Slanetz, Ketchum City Council president, said. “We also want

our citizens to be cautious and safe and to prepare for even more flooding posed by rising river flows.”

In Ketchum, closed roads include Puchner Bridge, Picabo Street, Skiway Court, Skiway Drive between Howard Drive and Picabo Street, and Wood River Drive between Sabala and Williams streets.

Board Ranch is closed to all but local traffic, and a couple was dramatically rescued from their home on Log Chain Lane out Board Ranch on Saturday by the Ketchum and Sun Valley fire departments. The occupants were left stranded in their residence, which was surrounded by swiftly moving water on all sides, requiring a swift-water rescue to bring them to safety.

Residents have also reported flooding on more than 20 other streets in Ketchum.

greater than 3 inches should be scraped away. Severely eroded areas should be replenished with topsoil. As a general rule, at least 4 inches of topsoil is needed for a healthy lawn.

Cultivate the area, incorporating the silt into the topsoil. Prepare a smooth seedbed and apply a starter fertilizer.

Seeding is best done from mid-August to early October in Idaho. Spring is the second best time of the year to sow. Use hardy grass types normally used in the region, such as Kentucky bluegrass, red and other fine fescues, perennial ryegrass, crested wheatgrass and blue grama grass. Flood-tolerant grasses, such as reed canary grass, are too coarse and not recommended for home landscapes.

New sod can be applied through mid-October. Sod typically is a Kentucky bluegrass mix and should be used only in sunny areas.

After flooding devastates a lawn, the first step is to pick up any garbage and other debris the floodwaters brought into the yard. Be careful, as pieces of glass, metal and other harmful items may be buried in the silt.

Wash up thoroughly after working with the soil since it may have been contaminated with toxic materials.

Lawns under water for less than four days and covered with 1 inch or less of silt may quickly recover. In this case, gently rake the ground to break the soil crust. Core aeration can help dry the soil. A half-strength fertilizer application (1/2 pound of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet) will encourage turf recovery.

Fall overseeding may thicken the lawn.

Chris Schnebly and Rick Spalding have a large, meandering property some 300 yards from the Big Wood River, separated by scrub woods and the Draper Wood River Preserve. A creek bed that wanders alongside their lawn is normally bone dry, but is fast-flowing now.

“It was crystal clear to start, but then the river water came and it’s totally muddy,” Schnebly said, looking out over the very green, wet lawn. “It’s hard to get your brain around it. First thing I do now is look at the water.”

Spalding, who’s lived on the property for 35 years, said, “Every few years I get my creek, when the river jumps its banks. It was once called Tailrace Creek and came out of

the old sawmill upstream.”

Two houses away, Patrice Cole checked the water level near the furnace in her home’s crawl space. Idaho Power turned off their electricity and, like their neighbors, the Coles are using a generator to power sump pumps. Sandbags won’t help them now; the river has come all the way up under their decks.

Julie Gates, who boards her horse, Rooster, at a ranch on flooded Broadford Road south of Hailey, was able to move Rooster to higher ground over the weekend.

“This is my first real instance with flooding, and I didn’t want to take a chance,” Gates said. “You have to have respect for the elements.”

In Hailey, volunteers filled more than 2,000 sandbags.

“The community has really stepped up in helping those residents whose homes are already surrounded by water,” said Hailey Mayor Fritz Haemmerle.

Meanwhile, officials warn that the floodwaters are fast-moving and can be extremely dangerous for motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists and pets. Potholes and sinkholes are opening up under moving water and the water itself may be a health hazard. Debris, pollutants, and possible electric currents are carried within the water. The flooded areas all have underground power. Floodwaters may carry electricity from damaged power sources.

Dottie Klein, the manager at Riverside RV Park in west Bellevue, said several residents had pulled out of the park, and were heading south, after water and sewer service was turned off over the weekend. Water was turned back on Monday, but there is still no sewer for the RV park or Westwood Mobile Home Park adjacent to it. Porta-potties were brought in.

Ketchum Fire Chief Mike Elle suggests those who live in the floodplain be prepared by putting together a “kit that includes extra clothes, medicines, food and pet supplies for those with dogs or cats.

“The important thing right now is for people to stay out of the water. Just avoid it altogether because of the risk it poses to health and safety. The river itself is extreme-

ly dangerous and unpredictable. Every time a tree falls into the current and is carried downstream, it creates a potential hazard for roads, bridges and private property.”

Bladders, sandbags, and similar barriers should be placed within about 10 feet of the home structure, but not against it, and should not block or impede the flow of water through or across the stream channel or floodplain.

Landowners are, for the most part, responsible for the protection of their own properties.

All local first responders and government officials are coordinating and working together to ensure the safety of the community. As local emergency responders continue to evaluate the situation, decisions will be made in the best interest of public safety. tws

here is certainly not a lot to be said about fly fishing this week. You may find some fish in the reservoirs, but beyond lakes and ponds, we are left waiting for opening day. The good news is, we are going to have an epic opener on Saturday, May 27. The conditions on Silver Creek are as good as we’ve ever seen them.

Friday night, May 26, we hope you will join us for a Reel Recovery benefit at Picabo Angler. Our close friend and fly-fishing guru Hank Patterson will be joining us to talk about fly fishing and share some of his latest work. We will also have live bluegrass music, beer and more. The boys from Idaho Angler will be here to share their Owyhee River experiences with you. Artists Ed Anderson and Bern Sundell, two of the best in the business, will be here to paint, display and sell some of their amazing works.

This event is from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, May 26, before opening day. Plan on camping down here so you can wake up, go fishing, and then join us again in Saturday at Picabo Angler for our free opening day BBQ. The BBQ starts at 11:30 a.m. and we go until we run out of burgers and dogs. The Picabo Angler guide staff will be on hand that day if anyone has questions about the Creek, or maybe wants a quick casting tuneup.

When you come down to fish the Creek, be sure to bring your PMD and Baetis Mayfly patterns. Those will be the big hatches. Be sure to have Brown Drakes, just in case. Terrestrials are also a must-have for the first week of the season. Ants and Beetles are key players in the bug world on Silver Creek. Even the giant Stink Bug Beetles you see crawling around here are considered fish food. A great big Black Fat Albert can also be a really fun fly to cast and present the first week of the season.

We keep repeating this, but again, don’t worry about the crowds on opening weekend.

It is a local celebration and not everyone is fishing. The people that are fishing here are kind-hearted and good people.

DOG RELATIONSHIPS TAKE TIME

ow simple life would be if our dog would just like every dog and person they meet. But, the reality is that, just like people, most dogs need to learn to trust each other. Once in a while there is a dog out there that just loves everyone and every dog immediately. But the fact is more dogs need to have time to learn to trust other dogs—and people, too.

Somewhere along the way we have begun to believe that every dog must be outgoing and social, and that they need to play with other dogs. But, each and every dog is different. Many dogs will establish friendships with other dogs but, chances are, they need to have slow, unpressured meetings with another dog until they can build trust. Just like people, we need time to get to know each other before we share our feelings or even personal information.

Dogs need to feel safe during that time that they are getting to know another dog. They need to feel like they know you will protect them from harm, or even attack from another dog, through our leadership, just like a child trusts you as a parent to keep them safe.

A dog that has been attacked by another dog may need even longer to develop trust for a new, potential dog friend. And sometimes dogs that have been previously attacked may find it almost impossible to make new dog friends at all. Forcing a dog that is already sensitive into interactions with other dogs in the name of “socialization” usually won’t solve the problem.

When we send a dog off to social events, we expect them to immediately wag their tail and enjoy the fun. And, honestly, this is OUR human need, not the reality of most dogs. As humans, when our dogs get along with all dogs and all people, our responsibility for the emotional safety of our dog lessens. We can then talk on the phone or text. We can chat with someone we meet on the trail and never give a second thought about what our dog is

doing because we believe he is engrossed in eager play.

The problem arises when we don’t see the signals that our dogs give us telling us that this is really uncomfortable for them.

We miss the whale eye, or the slight lip curl.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a brawl happens, and we don’t understand WHY that happened, when all along the dog was telling us “Please! Get me out of here! I am not comfortable!” Instead of taking the time to read the dog’s only language, we are oblivious to their needs and then we are surprised when the dog reacts with a fearful and aggressive response.

They key is to understand that dogs need TIME to trust other dogs to build relationships. We also need to learn to see the signs

that our dog is uncomfortable and respond accordingly, letting them know they are safe and we will protect them through our kind and effective leadership.

Learning dog language and leadership is a gift you can give your dog. Dog language is not always as it would appear to us humans.

Having patience to allow for gradual and controlled interactions can be the kindest socialization you can provide.

he Valley is under tremendous anxiety with water overflowing in many areas.

Meadows are flooded, the water creating additional waterways through the vegetation. Most likely there are few creatures that are content with the changes, but I have seen a number of Canada geese that have chosen to nest within these new wetlands. My husband and I saw one pair with five goslings meandering the wet pathways that have recently channeled through the meadow.

The goslings are tiny, just a bit larger than my hand. They are a mottled golden brown, and are well camouflaged—the coloring blends perfectly with the natural surroundings. When the geese are out and about, I always see the mother in front, followed by the five goslings. Taking up the rear is the father. I can tell he is the male bird because he is significantly larger than the female.

The male is always looking about to make sure there are no hidden dangers. In the water, they follow the same pattern—the female in front followed by the five goslings paddling away, the father at the end of the line. Generally,

there is one wandering gosling, a bit out of order with the other four. One of the parents is quick to reprimand the little one to get him back in line.

The family has been enjoying the “expansion” of the pond. The addition of water has greatly increased their wet areas and they

have been busy exploring all of the new terrain. Nature tends to bring dual challenges: good and bad, light and dark, feast or famine. We had a beautiful winter and now we are facing a challenging aftermath. I hope for the best for our Valley and I hope for the best for individuals that are

facing particularly difficult and challenging situations.

wo hundred and thirteen years ago this month, the Corps of Discovery, led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, left Missouri and headed west to find the Pacific Ocean. More than two years later, they would complete their journey (which included crossing through Idaho twice) and return to the “civilized world” with newly-drawn maps, descriptions of the resources available to an expanding America, and pages upon pages of notes about the flora and fauna that they found out West.

Afterwards, an ornithologist named Alexander Wilson ended up looking at some of the birds that they had collected and he confirmed to the world that several were new species to science. In documenting them so they could be listed in future ornithology books about America, Wilson officially dubbed one of them Lewis’s woodpecker (Melanerpes lewis). Later, another biologist would name the newly described cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) in honor of William Clark, keeping with the tradition that a humble scientist might not name a species after one’s self, but could honor another person with the species’ name.

Folks can be intimidated by the so-called “binomial nomenclature” system of naming species around the world. The heavy dose of Latin in scientific names might make people shy away. But many of the names that our local species have ended up with are worth investigation, as the stories behind them can be very revealing. For instance, our local coyote’s scientific name is Canis latrans, with “Canis” having roots in the Latin word for dog and “latrans” having Latin roots meaning “to bark.”

Our local falcons are all in the genus Falco, and that word is derived from the Latin word for “sickle” or “curved knife,” surely referring to the prominent (and, if you are a rodent, terrifying) talons of those birds.

The Northern mockingbird, an occasional visitor to Idaho, carries the name Mimus polyglottos—the Latin roots of Mimus mean “to mimic or imitate” and polyglottos means “many tongues” or “many languages.”

Sometimes a creature’s most striking trait is so striking that both of the two words in its name are duplicated: the wolverine is Gulo gulo (“gluttonous glutton”); the striped skunk is Mephitis mephitis (“stinky stinky”), with Mephitis the name of an ancient goddess who embodied the foul-smelling gases emitted by swamps.

Etymology is the study of words throughout human history, and looking at species’ scientific names through an etymological perspective can lead one into fascinating histories about species and our interactions with them over time.

Townsend A number of mammals are named for John Kirk Townsend, an American naturalist, ornithologist and collector. Many of these were described from specimens collected during his travels. Townsend’s ground squirrel (Spermophilus townsendii) is endemic to the southwestern region of the state of Washington. Townsend’s chipmunk (Tamias townsendii), Townsend’s mole (Scapanus townsendii) and Townsend’s vole (Microtus townsendii) occur in the northwest of the United States and southwest of British Columbia. Townsend’s pocket gopher (Thomomys townsendii) is found in southern Oregon, northern California, northern Nevada, and through the Snake River Valley in Idaho. Townsend’s big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii) is found from southern British Columbia south through the Western United States to southern Mexico. The white-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus townsendii) ranges through southern Canada and the west-central U.S. through eastern California and Colorado.

The Facts

It is important to inform you of facts regarding the recent letter to the editor published on May 3 written by Pamela Plowman.

Enrollment has increased from 3,302 to 3,435 since I arrived—an increase of 4 percent.

As superintendent, I did not add the administrative position of data and assessment coordinator. The administrative position of data and assessment coordinator existed prior to my arrival.

As superintendent, I did not add an administrative position to create a program coordinator. Prior to my arrival and during my first year, that position was the dual immersion coordinator and then dual immersion and English language learning coordinator. The same position now includes English language learning and federal programs such as Title 1 and Title 2.

The position of administrative assistant for communications existed before my arrival.

The same position is now webmaster and communication specialist, including all web design and website support, graphic design, video, photo production and social media.

I did not receive a raise this past year. My salary has been the same for the last two years, $173,880. This is verified on our website where all contracts for all certified employees are posted.

In the past two years, 11.5 district-level administrative positions have been cut in order to keep the General Fund expenses in line with revenue. Three Reasons To Extend The 1% LOT For Air

I have spent a lot of time in the last three years listening to locals, second homeowners, and visitors about the recent changes to our air service and marketing of that service. The benefits of more flights and marketing fall into these categories: Tourism by air has grown steadily, helping the 70 percent of our economy (business and jobs) impacted by tourism.

Family and friends are happy to have so many new, convenient and, many times, cheaper options to connect with each other by air.

Our economy depends on air service and consistent marketing of new and existing flights. Increasing our seats and destinations—and the marketing of those flights and our community—keeps our local economy strong and helps new businesses locate here to provide jobs.

I hope you will vote in favor of the LOT for Air extension on May 16.

School District Is Not ‘Top Heavy’ Pamela Plowman (letter of May 3) asserts that our school district is burdened by an excessive and growing number of administrators whose presence brings little benefit to children in the classrooms. In addition to errors noted on the district’s website (see “Fact Checker” www.blaineschools.org/domain/1017), Ms. Plowman’s basic argument is at odds with the facts. Unfortunately, two of the school board candidates at Thursday night’s candidates’ forum, Cami Bustos (Zone 2) and Johnny Galgano (Zone 4) appear to buy into this false narrative.

“Top-heavy” was the term they used.

So what are the facts?

The State of Idaho currently funds (more accurately, “underfunds”) 258 positions for our district’s General Fund; 12 of these are administrators. Under the state’s model, we are “entitled” to one administrator for every 21 non-administrators (teachers, paraprofessionals, etc.). But our community, through local property taxes, invests far more in our schools than the state provides. Instead of 258 positions, we currently support 430. Of those 430, 16 are administrators, which is only one administrator for every 26 non-administrators. By the state’s 1-for-21 standard, we would have 20 administrators, not 16.

Seen from a different angle, we deploy 68 percent more non-administrators than the state funds, but only 33 percent more administrators. By what standard is that excessive?

Ms. Plowman also asserts that our administrative ranks are growing (21 percent, she said) under the leadership of superintendent GwenCarol Holmes. Again, false! When Holmes arrived in July 2014, she inherited a budget that provided for 18 administrators. She cut that number to 16. In 2014 our ratio of administrators to non-administrators was 1-to-23. Today, it is 1-to-26. Does that look like growth?

In their campaigns, Bustos and Galgano argue that a bloated administrative machine is sucking resources out of our children’s classrooms. Do the numbers support this? You be the judge!

Vote Galgano For School Board

We support Johnny Galgano for the Zone 4 school board seat and ask that you vote for him on Tuesday, May 16.

Johnny is running on a platform of putting our students first. He is rightly concerned that our current administration and board are making decisions without full consideration of their impact on students (and parents). He is especially worried about budget cuts that are reducing the number of teachers and para-professionals in daily contact with our children, rather than high-paying administrator positions, whose costs have grown over the past several years.

Johnny Galgano has pledged to bring transparency to the board and to engage in a two-way dialogue with all members of the community. His high integrity and firm, no-nonsense approach are exactly what we need to restore the public’s trust in the school administration.

While Johnny understands the need to rein in spending, he strongly disagrees with Rob Clayton and other board members who voted to eliminate programs and positions that directly impacted kids while leaving costly administrator positions untouched.

A school board member is an elected position that oversees school district administration. Basic oversight by board members includes scrutinizing and questioning proposals coming from the district office. Yet the Zone 4 incumbent, Rob Clayton, has stated that he does not feel it is his job to do so. One need only look to Rob’s voting record to see that he is failing to provide independent oversight and scrutiny.

Johnny supports small class sizes and understands that a one-size-fits-all formula for staffing does not address the reality of each classroom, with second-language learners, Individualized Education Programs and learning disabilities. Resources must be allocated in a manner best suited for the makeup of each class.

A Valley resident for 35 years, Johnny has been actively involved with Blaine County School District for 12 years as a parent, guest teacher, paraprofessional, computer lab manager, and ISAT [Idaho Standards Achievement Test] administrator. Through this experience, he has developed extensive knowledge of how the district operates and what is needed for the future. Now is the time to elect a new trustee for Zone 4, one who will stand up for us and our children. Through Johnny, our voices will finally be heard.

SYRINGA SCHOOL BEGINS BEEKEEPING

S

y r inga Mou nt ain S c h o o l ’s population has grown with a new colony of honey bees for its Farm and Garden program. The bees arrived on April 29 and live on the rooftop of the green Syringa school building off Highway 75 in bee boxes that were built by Miles Teitge and will be decorated by the fourth grade.

Syringa was awarded a grant from Whole Foods back in 2014, as a “Beekeeping Package,” including curriculum materials, education, and classes for the head beekeeper, Miles Teitge. Two types of hardy bees, Carniolan and Italian, were purchased from a beekeeping club in Twin Falls.

“It took some time to get the project rolling and getting trained as a beekeeper while also in the first three years of opening the school,” said Teitge. “Happy to see it all come together.”

on incorporating the bees into their fourth-grade “Animal” block and the third-grade “Life Cycle” block for their studies.

Honey bees are quite docile and students will be able to observe safely and through looking lenses being built into the boxes. In addition, the school expects pollination to benefit the 2,800-square-foot Earth Rise Garden and look forward to some sweet honey in return for their hospitality.

Energy at Syringa abounds this spring at Earth Rise. The sixth grade is constructing a Monarch weigh station with a gazebo, and a new fence is being built to protect the garden, thanks to generous donations of labor from Lee Gilman and materials from Idaho Lumber.

n Saturday, May 6, the Environmental Resource Center conducted its 23rd annual Clean Sweep.

Bellevue Elementary School’s 3rd-5th grade students kicked off the event on Wednesday, cleaning along the bike path from their school to POWER Engineers. A total of 160 students, teachers, and parents participated in the effort.

On Saturday, over 200 people came out to clean up our cities and trails, from north of Ketchum to east of Sun Valley to south of Bellevue.

Community members of all ages filled hundreds of bags of trash, doing their part in encouraging a heathier community and more beautiful environment.

Congratulations to Cox Communications, Clean Sweep’s 2017 business winner, who had the most event participants and picked up the most trash.

‘UGLY DUCKLING & SWAN LAKE’ Footlight’s spring performance

ootlight Dance Centre will present a production of “The Ugly Duckling and Swan Lake” at 7 p.m. May 12-13 and at 2 p.m.

May 14 in the Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater at the Community Campus in Hailey. A total of 170 talented young dancers, ages 5-18, will grace the stage for this special production.

Act One will feature “The Ugly Duckling” and is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale. “‘Swan Lake’ is a ballet requiring mature dancers to do it justice—not well suited for young dancers—so I needed a vehicle for our younger dancers to perform and see the ballet performance that they are working towards, just as our company dancers look to the professionals,” explained Hilarie Neely, artistic director.

“The ‘Ugly Duckling’ story is about a swan born into a duck family and not knowing how she fits into the world until she sees a flock of swans overhead and feels at home. This is a perfect first act before the fairytale of ‘Swan Lake’ is seen.”

Sophia Schoen will play the Ugly Duckling and Emelia Morgan will play Mother Duck.

One of Neely’s favorite numbers includes watching the Baby Ducklings come out of their eggs and dance across the age.

“Seeing their enthusiasm, bright eyes and smiles warms your heart,” she said.

Many consider “Swan Lake” the foundation of classic ballet, by integrating libretto, dance and music into an organic whole.

turned into swans by the evil spell of Von Rothbart,” Neely said. “Prince Siegfried, who encounters them on a hunting trip, vows to break the spell with marriage. The corps de ballet work of the swans is magnificent and it takes at least 12-20 dancers to do it justice.

“This year, we have a body of dancers accomplished in their technique to bring the work into focus and give the audience a sea of swans flying together in sink with the music,” Neely continued. “Along with the leads, this is truly a ‘preprofessional’ performance that our community will be proud to see the dancers accomplish.”

The two-act ballet will star senior Malila Freeman as Odette-The Swan Queen, Lemuel Reagan as Prince Siegfried, Taylor Telford as Sorceress Van Rothbart and Anika Lyon as Odile-The Black Swan.

“Malila has been dancing with Footlight since she was 4 years old,” Neely said. “She has been a leader in our senior company all through high school. She

is a very accomplished dancer and this role will bring out her artistry that will bring the audience into the heart and soul of the ‘swans.’”

Neely, Freeman and Lyon received inspiration and advice about how to perform the roles of Odette/Odile from Isabella Bolyston, principal, American Ballet Theater, in New York City. She is one of the world’s best interpreters of this role and was born in Sun Valley.

Choreography for the production was created by instructors Christina Arpp, Julie Fox, Melodie Taylor-Mauldin, Michele Minailo, Hilarie Neely, Jen Simpson, Leah Taylor, Anne Winton and guest choreographer Jaime Moore.

F.A.S.T. = STROKE SYMPTOMS. DON’T WAIT!!

troke is like a heart attack—time matters!

In this case, brain tissue dies when the circulation is disrupted. It is one of the most dreaded medical emergencies and often results in lifelong disability.

At St. Luke’s Wood River Emergency Department we have emergency physicians directing a team of well-trained healthcare providers who provide expert care quickly.

Stroke starts with the onset of symptoms. The acronym F.A.S.T. can help in identification: F: Face drooping. Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile.

Is it uneven or lopsided?

A: Arm weakness. Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S: Speech difficulty. Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask them to repeat a simple sentence. Are they able to correctly repeat the words?

T: Time to call 911. If the person exhibits any of these symptoms, even if they go away, call 911 and tell the operator it may be a stroke.

Note the time the symptoms first appeared; emergency responders will want to know.

It works best if given as soon as possible—that means the longer you wait, the more chances of irreversible damage, and vice versa.

If the stroke is more severe and associated with a large clot in the blood vessel, SLWR is part of the larger St Luke’s Health System, which includes a 24/7 neuroradiologist who can remove the clot from the brain.

Again, time matters. The sooner the clot is removed, the better.

So, in this case, we would transport the patient to Boise via the quickest available manner, most often by helicopter. That’s a good reason to have an Air St. Luke’s membership at only $65/year!

SILVER CREEK STUDENT REFLECTS ON GROWTH THROUGH NEWSPAPER INTERNSHIP

A

s a Silver Creek High School student, every year I have the opportunity to engage in an internship with a local business or nonprofit based on my interests. Every Tuesday for the past seven months I have interned at The Weekly Sun newspaper, pursuing my passion to be a writer. Not only have I built incredible relationships with each staff member, but I’ve also learned more about the newspaper industry in this short period of time than I could have ever imagined.

Since beginning my internship, I have grown in a lot of ways as a young writer.

I started off the year expecting an easy, one-way ticket to becoming a perfect journalist, but I have learned through my time here that it requires a lot of dedication, time and preparation to produce an article polished enough to publish in a professional newspaper.

I have really appreciated

the time I’ve spent at The Weekly Sun and the work I’ve had published by the newspaper. I have learned how to become more engaged as a teenager in my community and how to produce honest and informative news. I have enjoyed the opportunities to try different parts of the newspaper industry beyond writing, such as building ads, practicing my editing skills to prepare the paper for press, and photography.

After working with the newspaper for seven months, I have also learned the important roles local newspapers play in a community. If it weren’t for local news, it would be very difficult for residents to be informed on the events going on around them. It would also be harder for community members to be as engaged with each other, to participate in local activities, and to know the facts, not just the rumors.

Besides, if there were no newspapers, there would be nothing to look forward to every Wednesday! tws

In Hailey, guest artist Kaleigh Surber will offer “Radiant Mandalas: Meditative Drawing & Journaling” an Adult Class/Creative JumpIn class.

The Sun Valley Center’s “Contemplative Practice” exhibition serves as a catalyst for exploration into the intersection of the arts, meditation, spirituality, religious practices and mindfulness.

Through this class, participants will explore the origins of the mandala and the significance and universality of mandala designs in various cultures. All necessary materials will be provided, but if students already have a journal and colored pencils and pens they enjoy using, they’re encouraged to use them.

This workshop is available to Center members for $50 and to nonmembers for $100.

BUG ZOO UNIVERSITY SATURDAY MAY 13 11AM TO 3PM / BOTANICAL GARDEN / KETCHUM Bug Zoo University, at the Sawtooth Botanical Garden, features “Amazing Adaptations” and is a terrific opportunity for adults and kids to dive deep into the amazing world of bugs, bees, snakes, geckos and more. Owners of many of Bug Zoo’s 35 critters will be on hand to share their natural history and a favorite story. Meet Burma the corn snake, Boris the ball python and Sneakers the French ivory millipede. Additionally, local naturalist Ann Christensen will introduce Rosie, her favorite tarantula.

The kids’ activity tables include face painting, critter crafts, bug scavenger hunt, fun photo ops and cockroach races. Bring the kids and explore engaging displays while learning about fun, weird and sometimes incredibly helpful creepy crawlers.

Bug Zoo University is $5 for adults, $3 for children 5-18 and free for children 4 and under. Visit sbgarden.org for a full schedule of activities and exhibit hours.
