ast month, the Hailey City Council approved moving the Hailey Police Department to the Idaho National Guard Armory, located at 701 South 4th Avenue, next to Roberta McKercher Park. The vote was unanimous. The Hailey Police Department currently shares space with Hailey City Hall on the second floor of the Fox Building, at 115 South Main Street in Hailey. The move is planned for May 1, 2017. The Guard will relocate to another facility outside of Blaine County.

"It is a great opportunity,” said Jeff Gunter, Hailey police chief and 24-year HPD veteran. “The building is pretty much ready. We are happy that the building is on the ground floor. There are more parking spaces. Moving from downtown will free more parking spaces for the Hailey Library. Everybody is positive about it."

The Hailey Police Department employees 12 officers and uses five reserved parking spots. There are no plans for a holding cell in the new facility, which is also the case at their current location.

The previous police station, near the Blaine County Courthouse, on South 2nd Avenue, had a pink elephant painted on the wall of the holding cell.

News of the move has drawn mixed reactions from businesses in the current neighborhood downtown.

"It is better for the community,” said Aaron Hughston, a Hailey resident and owner of Tamarack Sports. “They can secure their cars in the back parking lot."

Copy & Print owner Jeff Bertz echoed that sentiment.

"It’s a good move for them,” he said. “Having a ground level will be good."

Employees of the Hailey Public Library, which occupies the ground floor of the Fox Building, said they look forward to utilizing those extra parking spaces. However, a few neighbors see a different side to the situation.

"We will miss the surveillance,” said Richard Castillo, an employee at Lago Azul Mexican restaurant, catty-corner to the HPD. “We would rather have them here than gain five parking spots. We’ll also miss their business."

The Armory was upgraded with security features in 2013. It is the home of a 17-guardsmen unit of

Hailey Halloween Hoopla will be held 3:30–5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, when dressed-up goblins, witches and monsters will be filling the streets of downtown Hailey to trick-or-treat.

the 116th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team, the largest formation of the Idaho Army National Guard.

The Idaho Army National Guard will consolidate local guard facilities into what are known as Regional Readiness Centers across the state. The Hailey-based guards will move to a station in Twin Falls County just north of the Perrine Bridge.

Hailey City Administrator Heather Dawson said the Idaho Army National Guard will retain the right to occupy the building for nine years and, if necessary, could share the space with the Hailey Police Department under a governor’s order.

The new location’s lease is $3,700 per year, for a period of five years.

While being used by the National Guard, the Armory was also put to use at various times for community events, such as the Festival of Trees, Halloween festivities, the Trailing of the Sheep Festival’s quilt show, Idaho’s Bounty food pick-up and antique fairs.

“We’re working on a policy right now that would allow the community to use it without compromising the police work,” Dawson said. tws sacredness to both experiences.

Sun Valley featured in 'Where to Retire'

Sun Valley was recently selected as a top retirement destination by “Where to Retire,” a magazine geared toward helping people with retirement relocation decisions. The city is profiled in the November/December issue, now on newsstands.

“Where to Retire” editor Annette Fuller said Sun Valley possesses qualities important to today’s retirees, including recreation. Each year, 700,000 Americans relocate to new towns to retire. Generally, relocating retirees are healthier, better educated and more affluent than those who choose to not relocate. They bring significant economic benefits to their new states and hometowns. Nationally, two dozen states and hundreds of towns seek to attract retirees as a source of economic development.

“Where to Retire” magazine, launched in 1992 with the goal of helping its readers find the ideal place to retire, is published six times a year.

COMMUNITY RADIO JOINS INNOVATION CENTER

ommunity radio, a staple in towns all over the U.S., came to the Wood River Valley nearly four years ago as KDPI-FM 88.5 Drop-In Radio. It has steadily built a listening base and eclectic array of musical and talk show offerings.

Last week, the station moved from its former home on North Main Street in Ketchum to the Ketchum Innovation Center, at the corner of Sun Valley Road and First Avenue in Ketchum. With this move, KDPI joins an assortment of entrepreneurs in a newly designed space in what, to old timers, is still remembered as the old post office.

“KIC was created to help new and existing businesses get off the ground, grow and become sustainable, all with the goal of creating professional, full-time jobs in the Wood River Valley and boosting the overall year-round economy,” said Jon Duval, the executive director of the Ketchum Innovation Center.

“In addition, the organization looks to bring in new entrepreneurs, increasing the number of full-time residents and professional jobs that aren’t dependent on our traditional seasonal economy. This is accomplished by offering shared office space with like-minded entrepreneurs, access to a highly accomplished range of volunteer mentors and the opportunity to garner local investments.”

KDPI has approximately 25 unique shows on the air with a local volunteer staff of show hosts.

“The new space feels like a step up and will give us more visibility,” said Jean Jacques Bohl, a DJ with two shows on the station. “It will allow KDPI to interact with other entrepreneurial businesses.”

In fact, the new space, though smaller than its former home, will allow for collaboration with KIC’s other tenants, which is part of the station’s mission to bring community together through education, entertainment, local information and dialogue.

“We are deeply grateful to Jon Duval and KIC’s board of directors for inviting us in,” Scott Carlin, KDPI’s board president, said. “With KDPI joining the commu-

nity of businesses in the Ketchum Innovation Center, an important puzzle piece falls into place in the bigger picture of creating a stronger community and economy in the Wood River Valley.”

Mike Scullion, who worked for years to obtain the Federal Communications Commission license, founded the station in 2013. Last year, a new antenna was erected on an existing tower atop Bald Mountain, which enables KDPI to broadcast Valley-wide.

“This will no doubt be a mutually beneficial relationship,” Scullion said.

Now the station’s general manager, Scullion said the nonprofit organization looks forward to using the reach of the station across the Valley and beyond to let people know that they are listening to KDPI-FM broadcasting live from the Ketchum Innovation Center.”

Successful mobile spay/neuter clinic held in Richfield

On Sept. 28, the Pets for Life program at the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley held its first spay/ neuter clinic in the town of Richfield. While the shelter has provided free spay/neuter clinics for Richfield residents since December of 2015, this was the first clinic done in town with the help of the Idaho Humane Society and their mobile spay/neuter trailer. The Pets for Life program altered more than 450 animals for free to residents of Fairfield and Richfield. It also provided vaccinations, pet food, and collars and tags.

Pet patients were picked up at their homes and transported to the mobile unit parked in the center of town.

A veterinarian and licensed vet tech from the Idaho Humane Society, and a volunteer vet assistant provided by the Animal Shelter, performed the surgeries.

Ketchum residents Holly Mora and Rachel Sanker volunteered for the shelter and were instrumental to the success of the day.

In total, 38 cats and two dogs were altered.

The next clinic will be held Wednesday, Oct.12, and the folks at both the Idaho Humane Society and Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley hope to spay and neuter even more pets, and continue this great partnership.

HOMECOMING IS SWEET

Muffy Davis once again calls the Wood River Valley home

fter 17 years away from the Wood River Valley, skier Muffy Davis has moved back home. Davis moved from the Wood River Valley to Park City, Utah, in 1999 to train for the 2002 Paralympic Games. To say that time of her life was just the beginning for this superstar athlete’s career would be an understatement, as her competitive spirit and drive started at a very young age, right here in the Wood River Valley.

Davis was a promising young ski racer and a top-ranked Junior ski racer when she crashed during a training run on Bald Mountain at the age of 16. That ski accident left her paralyzed from the chest down and in a wheelchair for life. But being in a wheelchair couldn’t slow this woman down. This is really the start of her remarkable story. Davis took the drive and hard work that she always had with ski racing and went forward to create an incredible career in athletics.

When Davis moved to Park City, she already had one Paralympics under her belt and a medal to show for it. Davis won the bronze medal in slalom racing in the 1998 Paralympics in Nagano, Japan.

“It’s your entire career,” Davis said. “It’s your job, what you do every day, preparing, training, what you eat, how you recover, it was my job. That, and the fundraising – getting, sustaining and keeping in touch with sponsors. Really, that was my fulltime job for many years. That and public speaking.”

Davis’s hard work paid off as her list of medals and accomplishments quickly grew. In 2000, she won the World Championship in Anzere, Switzerland, in giant slalom, and in 2001 and 2002 she was the

World Cup overall champion in women’s monoskiing. The 2002 Paralympics in Salt Lake City is where her medal count really exploded, with three silver medals in the downhill, super-G, and giant slalom.

Throughout all of her training and winter Paralympic Games, Davis somehow fit in meeting her husband, courtship, marriage and a family.

“I met Jeff Burley in 2000 when he was working for the National Ability Center in Park City as a recreational therapist. We really got to know each other on an adaptive river-rafting trip down the Grand Canyon. Then we started dating the summer of 2000. Jeff was instrumental in coaching and helping me with my racing and training for 2002. He then proposed Christmas of 2002 and we were married on the rim of the Grand Canyon in August of 2004.”

Davis retired from competition after the 2002 Games. Instead, she turned her substantial drive toward fundraising and donor development for the University of Utah’s Rehabilitation Center, working to help others with spinal and neurological issues.

“I worked with them for four years, with one year off in the middle while my husband and I traveled around the world volunteering and teaching adaptive sports in developing countries,” Davis said. “That was in 2006 and 2007.”

She then left the hospital and went to work for a startup company in market and brand development for two years. Her daughter, Elle, was born in 2008.

“I was fortunate that I could take a full year off and just be a mom,” Davis said.

“I did some speaking throughout all this time. Whenever a client called, I worked it into my schedule.”

In 2010, Davis jumped into another activity, handcycle racing, and returned to Paralympic-level competition.

“Elle was born at full term and I had a normal, uneventful delivery – a complete miracle,” Davis said. “But afterwards, I looked at my body and really wanted to get back in shape. That’s when I started handcycling, and being a competitor. I set a goal to do the Salt Lake City Marathon four months after she was born. That was the only way I could get myself to train.”

At that race she met other adaptive cyclists, which propelled her back into

Paralympic competition. Two years later, Davis went to U.S. Nationals where she won the time trial, putting her on the U.S. World Championship Team later that summer. At the Worlds, she won three silver medals.

“I knew nothing about cycling,” she said. “I just knew how to push myself hard and compete. I called my husband and we decided I should give it my best shot to get to London and compete in the Summer Games. So you could say I owe my daughter for my three gold medals. Our Christmas card after the London Games was us each wearing one of the medals because we all sacrificed. It was truly a team effort and fitting that we won three, one for each of us.”

After all of her accomplishments, Davis and her husband decided it was the right time to move back to the Wood River Valley.

“We knew we needed a quality-of-life change for our family,” Davis said. “For me, the only option was to come back here to the Wood River Valley. We found a wonderful house that would work perfectly for me in a chair and offered us everything we wanted. Jeff didn’t know what he was going to do for work, but we just knew we needed a change. Housing Authority announces resignation of ED David Patrie, longtime executive director of the Blaine County Housing Authority (BCHA), is leaving the organization to pursue opportunities in the private sector, according to a press release from Bobi Bellows, the acting director.

The BCHA advocates, promotes, plans and preserves the long-term supply of desirable and affordable housing choices in all areas of Blaine County in order to maintain an economically diverse, vibrant and sustainable community. For the last five years, Patrie played a critical role in the development and success of BCHA. He helped to more than double the number of rental units in BCHA stewardship. He added housing counseling services and additional professional certifications for staff, added biannual affordability analyses to stakeholder reports, and pursed and finalized donation of the Lift Tower Lodge.

‘There’s always a better way to skin a cat’

S

teve Miller, R-Fairfield, is the incumbent candidate representing District 26 in November’s election for the Idaho State Legislature. Miller defeated Democratic candidate Dick Fosbury in the 2014 election by 126 votes out of 12,696. His opponent in this election is Kathleen Eder, of Hailey.

A lifelong farmer and rancher from Fairfield, Miller has been a member of the State Legislature since 2012. His public service, which began right after college, includes being a Camas County Commissioner, supervisor of the Camas Soil Conservation District, a member of the Camas County Planning & Zoning Commission, county representative to the Region IV Economic Development Board and a member of the Idaho Department of Agriculture Organic Advisory Board, president and director of the Idaho Association of Conservation Districts and member of the board of directors and executive board of the National Association of Conservation Districts.

When asked by The Weekly Sun what he considers a major accomplishment of his tenure as a state legislator, Miller pointed out his advocacy of Outcome Based Funding for Idaho’s public colleges.

The current Idaho State Board of Education funding policy, which is the method for allocating funds to Idaho colleges, is called Enrollment Workload Adjustment. This process allocates funding based on how many students are enrolled at Idaho universities: Boise State, University of Idaho, Idaho State University and Lewis–Clark State College.

Outcome Based Funding would allocate state money to public colleges on the basis of how many students graduate and then, according to Miller, “get a job in Idaho and help the economy.” Miller says he will continue to work on changing the current funding policy.

“I keep reminding people that it is important to keep the conversation going about aquifer recharge in Idaho,” said Miller, who is a member of the Agricultural Affairs and Resources and Conservation committees. “We need to have a long-term program.”

Miller believes that “We can always do better—in the legislature, on the farm, in our communities. People tend to get comfortable with the way things are, but there’s always a better way to skin a cat.”

He said that he also supports the recreation industry, which is crucial to the upper Wood River Valley.

After graduating from the University of Idaho with a degree in agricultural engineering, Miller married his high school sweetheart, Linda Coates, also a graduate of the University of Idaho, who was a teacher and librarian at Camas County High School. They were married for 43 years before her death in 2012. Daughter Nancy is a Navy medical doctor who has specialized in nephrology; son James is a member of the Idaho National Guard; and son Andrew, who graduated from the University of Idaho, has a master’s degree in structural engineering from Arizona State and is working at Stapley Engineering in Boise. tws

Wiseguy Pizza Pie’s new building construction is underway at 411 North Main Street in Hailey. But three mature linden trees at the location became the focus of a Hailey Planning and Zoning Commission consideration last month.

All along Main Street are mature linden trees planted nearly 20 years ago, creating a lovely, tree-lined Main Street corridor.

Wiseguy’s owners applied to the Hailey P&Z to remove one of the trees under an Idaho request for reconsideration statute, Title 67 State Government And State Affairs, Chapter 65, Local Land Use Planning.

In order to remove a tree, applicants must provide an arborist’s report.

It is now up to Wiseguy’s owners to decide whether to remove the tree. If they decide to remove the tree, they will either need to replace it with one nearby or make a payment in lieu to the Hailey tree fund for the value of the tree.

The Hailey Tree Committee will meet at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 13, at Hailey City Hall. If Wiseguy decides to remove the tree, the committee will decide whether they’d prefer payment or another tree.

Hailey Fire Department receives Select grant

Hailey Fire Department was one of 25 organizations, out of 180 applicants, to receive a $2,500 grant from SelectHealth. The grant will be used to teach CPR to all high school juniors in Hailey.

Hailey Fire Chief Craig Aberbach and Assistant Chief Mike Baledge attended the award ceremony.

Fellow grantees include organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Girls on the Run, Boys and Girls Club, Rescue Mission, and Crisis Center, all from other Idaho areas. The Select 25 award was created by SelectHealth in 2008 as a way to recognize organizations that improve health or serve individuals with special needs.

T

he fact that Baetis like to hatch during inclement weather is just the Universe’s way of saying, “Get off the couch!”

Even if it is raining and cold outside, you can still bet on great fishing at Silver Creek.

The past month or so we have been having three days a week of ugly weather. This has been very consistent, and what else has been consistent is the Creek blowing up with hatching bugs and rising fish. We can expect more of the inclement weather late this week and over the weekend, so get your little bugs out, put on a sweater and a rain shell, and get to the river. Oh, and yes, you can still throw big Hoppers, and the Mouse fishing is incredible.

If you haven’t had enough big-bug fishing, get to the South Fork of the Boise. The Hopper bight is still in full swing, and the afternoon Giant Crane Fly activity is worth watching. If you need to go subsurface, a Red Copper John will take plenty of fish in the shallows.

The October Caddis is also beginning to show, adding yet another large bug to the South Fork mix.

The Big Wood is also a great place to be, as the Baetis shows for the last few big hatches of the season. Don’t rule out October Caddis and Hoppers, as well.

If you want to drop a fly, try a basic Beadhead Pheasant Tail Nymph in a size 16.

The Lost River continues to stay at an elevated flow. Keep your eyes on the cfs before you head to the Lower Lost River; for mysterious reasons, the flows were elevated to 350 cfs for the past week. When this drops, expect a decent fishery to reappear.

Baetis and most red-colored nymphs this time of year will take fish.

Don’t underestimate the use of a flesh fly as spillover Kokanee begin to decay, filling the river with much-needed nutrients.

This is a spectacular time of year to fish the Upper Lost, not so much for catch rates but more for just fishing a world-class fly fishing stream with little to no anglers on it besides you. If you go, be prepared for a slick bottom and long walks between pools. When you get into fishy areas, try small Attractors, and if it’s deep enough, run some Streamers through the hole.

My mom replies, “This is a vet’s office, where sick dogs come. It is not a dog park or social club. Your dog was an obnoxious greeter and you were not considerate of my dog being sick.

Instead, your phone was more important than making sure your own dog was safe.”

ALPINE CREEK DIVIDE

his past weekend my husband, Alfredo, and I hiked the Alpine Creek Divide behind Alturas Lake. This is not a difficult hike, but it is exquisite when the autumn leaves are at their height. The trail passes through a valley, which contrasts the northern boundary of the rounded Smoky Mountains with the southern boundary of the very jagged Sawtooth Mountains.

This trail, perhaps more than any other, perfectly showcases the personality of these two mountain ranges.

The beginning of the trail passes through deep woods.

Scattered amongst the pine trees are patches of willow and aspen in vivid autumnal display. Hiking deeper into the Sawtooth Wilderness, eventually you enter into open meadows where the southern side of the Sawtooths comes clearly into view. It is quite striking to see the serrated outline of these mountains, with scattered trees clinging to the rocky terrain. Looking over your shoulder to the south you see the

heavily forested spherical forms of the Smoky Mountains. What a polarity! Standing in that valley one is privy to the perfect definition of the two mountain ranges.

Eventually the trail joins the Alpine Creek and one begins to walk alongside the gently running water. In some patches, the water cascades over stones, creating small waterfalls, the ripples glinting in the sun. In other areas the water slowed down enough that small pools were formed.

The tree-covered Smoky Mountains were reflected in these deeper pools. The reflections were a dark, almost black-green, generating mysterious shadows.

All along the trail the sun caught and played with the autumn colors: the golden yellows of the grasses and reeds alongside the water, the mustard yellows of the aspen trees peeking out from the pines, brilliant yellows of the river willows and the reds of different berry bushes.

tain range, this is a perfect hike to take. The Alpine Creek Divide juxtaposes the soaring sawtoothed outline of the namesake Sawtooth Mountains against the softer, more spherical Smoky Mountains. Here is where you truly begin to understand the

nature of these two mountain ranges.

Latino voter registration drive to be held

The City of Ketchum will sponsor a Latino voter registration drive, 2:15 to 3:45 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Hemingway Elementary School.

Spanish-speaking representatives will be at a blue city tent in front of the school to register voters.

“Ketchum wants to encourage and increase the number of residents who regularly participate in the electoral process and who embrace the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society,” Mayor Nina Jonas said. “Voting by all is fundamental to healthy democratic elections.”

Jonas’s remarks were incorporated in the resolution passed by

the City Council proclaiming Sept. 15-Oct. 15 as Latino Voter Registration Month.

To be eligible to vote, one must be a U.S. citizen, have resided in Blaine County since Oct. 8, and be at least 18 years old. A current photo ID or copy of a current utility bill or other document with name and physical address is required to register.

The deadline for advance registration is Oct. 14. People also may register to vote at polling places on Election Day. While the event is designed to encourage Latinos to register, other qualified residents may register as well.

The purpose of this letter is to reflect on why Zone 3 of Blaine County School District #61 still does not have a representative on the five-member board.

The Board of Trustees declared an opening for Zone 3 on July 12, 2016. Irene Healy submitted a letter of intent soon afterward. Between July 12 and the interviews on Sept. 20, over 500 individuals from all zones, including 176 for Zone 3, signed a letter of endorsement for Irene.

During the last election in Zone 3 a candidate with fewer than 176 votes won the election! The letter of endorsement was signed by supporters who recognize Irene’s talents and who are not representative of any special interests. Zone 3 has worked diligently to select a quality nominee who will support strong educational values and is not influenced by any group.

Irene is a great listener, asks questions, and works on constructive solutions to complex issues. Colleagues consider her smart, with the ability to solve problems. If you haven’t met Irene, opportunities to meet her will be available. Watch for times and places during October.

Zone 3 needs to be appropriately represented and Irene can provide the expertise to make this happen.

Please, School Board Trustees, don’t waste everyone’s time when the solution to the vacancy is available to you. You have the opportunity to raise your performance bar from mediocracy to excellence. This important decision is in your court and the voters of Zone 3, including me, are waiting.

Blaine County should consider disbanding the Blaine County Housing Authority.

BCHA’s 2015 total revenue was $1,359,220, yet their reports state that they only are able to place about 5-10 low-income applicants in housing per year.

At the Ketchum P&Z meeting, Ketchum’s well-qualified staff recommended that BCHA’s conditional use permit for operating the Lift Tower Lodge not be renewed as BCHA had not provided the information necessary to prove that the public good was being served.

This property was originally allowed the CUP to provide housing for Blaine County residents who have trouble finding a place to live in Blaine County; it was meant as a bridge to allow them time to find permanent housing.

[David] Patrie [then executive director of the BCHA, who announced his resignation Monday] represented that the Lodge has not turned away low-income applicants, but he provides no record of applicants or lodging records to support this. Currently, 90 percent of the Lift Tower Lodge is being rented out to large out-of-town contractors to house their employees.

Patrie testified that he does not advertise the Lodge in the For Rent section of the paper as he is worried that there would be too much response for the units from low-income residents. Yet, BCHA has operated the Lodge for the past year without ever achieving full occupancy. At times in the past year, the occupancy rate has dipped to 35 percent.

One would expect 100 percent occupancy with Income Category I folks, people that Patrie testified it is really, really hard to provide for. Patrie did not provide the information requested by P&Z staff because “we are not able to develop an exclusive list because that would unnecessarily limit our ability to react and adapt to the changing needs of the community.” Yet, one can go online and look at the extensive data collection and reporting by BCHA on other metrics in their reports. Patrie is a civil engineer.

P&Z members Erin Smith, Betsy Mizell and Jeff Lamoureux ignored their own inhouse experts and voted to allow BCHA to continue without oversight. P&Z members overriding their own experts last meeting looked very, very foolish.

Blaine County looks foolish by continuing to waste tax dollars on this runaway bureaucracy.

As an owner of a farming operation in Carey, Idaho, I know water is the lifeblood of our farms and I’m thankful knowing that Representative Steve Miller is looking after our water interests in the State Legislature. Steve Miller works to solve problems in the Idaho Legislature and protect our resources. Miller voted to recharge our aquifers and increase water storage.

Steve Miller has owned and operated his farm in Camas County for 30-plus years.

He has served on the Camas County Commission and the Planning and Zoning Commission. Miller has served on the Camas County Soil Conservation District. He gets Blaine County’s economic needs. Protecting its water resources is key to our valley’s success.

Miller is a member of the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee, and Resources and Conservation Committee, plus the Agricultural Affairs Committee.

Blaine County needs Miller in the legislature to look after our interests.

Representative Steve Miller has a record of researching issues and finding consensus to benefit all of our families in Legislative District 26. Whether you are talking water, education, or fostering a pro-business environment in our valley, Miller’s the best person for the job. We need his experience and knowledge working for us.

His opponent, Kathleen Eder, has limited experience. Blaine voters would be sending someone with no legislative experience to serve in the minority caucus.

With his four years of experience in the legislature serving with the majority caucus, Miller has a smoother path to getting legislation passed.

I ask you to vote for Alex Sutter for the open House Seat B. It is time we have a Republican representing us again. Alex will work hard for our district and will be very adept at voicing our views in the legislature. Alex is not the kind of person that will sit back and listen only. He will stand up and make our views known. He is a strong conservative and has been given an A rating by the National Rifle Association. He served in the Army Reserve and Guard for 10 years.

Alex is a small-business owner and will help keep Idaho a leader in small business and economic growth. He served on the Richfield P&Z for five years. He served on several nonprofit organizations in Lincoln County, including Boy Scouts of America, and organized a successful blood drive for several years.

He also believes in balancing choice, accountability, and responsible funding of Idaho schools. Alex served on the local school board for three years.

Sally Toone Will Work To Make Our Future Bright

Idaho District 26 is fortunate to have Sally Toone as a candidate for the State Legislature on the ballot on November 8.

Sally “gets” Idaho. She is a native Idahoan, and has spent 37 years teaching in the Gooding and Wendell school districts. She has taught for CSI at both the Gooding and Blaine County campuses. She hails from a farm and ranch family with history in both Gooding and Camas counties. With profound connections throughout our district, Sally Toone understands the diversity both within and across our communities.

As a fellow educator, it’s easy to support a high-caliber teacher. Good teachers are dedicated and hard working because they care. They don’t choose a career based on money. They love to learn, which is what entering the political arena requires. Educators are a passionate bunch.

Ketchum’s Main Street named one of 15 Great Places

The American Planning Association named Main Street in Ketchum, Idaho, as one of five Great Streets on the organization’s annual Great Places in America list. The announcement marks the kickoff of the APA’s National Community Planning Month celebration.

Ketchum will celebrate its Great Places in America designation with local businesses, residents and visitors on Thursday, Oct. 20 in Town Square.

As part the APA’s special Planning Month celebration, Great Places in America recognizes streets, neighborhoods and public spaces in the U.S. that demonstrate exceptional character, quality and planning – attributes that enrich communities, facilitate economic growth, and inspire others around the country.

“This year’s designees highlight the power of a single well-planned street to stimulate economic activity and energize an entire community,” said Carol Rhea, president of APA. The press release from APA states, “Nowhere is the quirky spirit of the Mountain West stronger than on Main Street in Ketchum, Idaho. The main thoroughfare of this tiny Idaho town hosts unique festivals that are only enhanced by a pedestrian-focused design.”

Ketchum Mayor Nina Jonas said the “investments the city has made in the community is a statement about the future of Ketchum. Community values and a strong sense of place have become priorities in the global economy. A LONELY KID

ome adults bemoan what they perceive as the short attention span of today’s younger generation. They abhor the idea of the current sound-bite mentality, the quest for instant gratification and easy access to information via the Web, and the overuse of social media to connect with others instead of deeper one-to-one interchanges. I do not entirely agree: my recent teaching has impressed me with my students’ work ethics and their grasp of world issues (due, in part, to increased insight about the world gained from the Internet).

The reality is that sophisticated technology is here to stay, in spite of wishes by older generations to recreate simpler times.

Many of us will try to keep up with new and complicated gimmicks. Perhaps in another column I will note my happy acceptance of many new inventions, but for now I want to ponder one sad example of our dependence on technology.

Recently, a friend mentioned a new app designed to locate an empty place at a school cafeteria lunch table. One scenario posits a student so unwelcome at lunchtime that he or she has to hope GPS technology will ease the daunting thought of another rejection.

My heart aches for this symbolic kid and his isolation.

I did, indeed, enjoy a simpler time.

When I would get an unwanted call or a visit from a boy I didn’t want to see, my mother wouldn’t let me off the hook by pretending I wasn’t home. She advised me to communicate directly, finding my own tactful words. He would manage without me, she said, rolling her eyes. I learned from her how to handle difficult situations in person. While it may be easier to talk via texting, I prefer more human interchanges.

In my first two years at Occidental College, my entire class was required to sit each morning in an assembly hall for a six-unit course (24 total) called History of Civilization. The required textbooks were only available in the library and had to be read there, so we spent many after-school hours inhabiting different nooks, forming bonds and learning about each other as well as history.

Being so often physically near my classmates helped me in my transfer to UCLA, a challenging place to find a niche and belong.

In spite of the 17,000 students, I seldom felt isolated or estranged from my fellow students and enjoyed our direct contacts and communications. The last kid picked can survive.

Fire Prevention Week – don’t wait

Does your home have a smoke alarm? The majority of people answer yes to this question, but most people are not sure how old their smoke alarms are. This lack of awareness is a concern for the Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office because smoke alarms don’t last forever.

Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 9-14 as Idaho Fire Prevention Week. The focus of the effort is on smoke alarms, for the third year in a row. Public misconceptions about the value of smoke alarms may put families at risk in the event of a home fire.

“If a smoke alarm is 10 years old or more, replace it,” Knute Sandahl, Idaho State Fire Marshal, said. “Smoke alarms lose sensitivity after 10 years and can fail to alert you to a fire in your home.”

To find out how old a smoke alarm is, check the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres.

hen Nancy Chapin started Vista Travel in Florida in 1994, she used a philosophy made popular in a Zig Ziglar quote: “You can get everything in life that you want if you just help enough other people get what they want,” and it’s been the guiding principle for her team ever since.

“Every day the most important aspect of our job is to help our clients first figure out what they want, and then help them make that a reality,” Nancy noted during a recent interview. “The business of travel agencies has changed quite a bit in the last 20 years but the end result is the same – we help people get the most out of their travel dollars and vacation time.”

In the 1980s it seemed there were travel agencies on every other corner of every town in the U.S. Today, with the advent of the Internet, many people have taken on the role of their own travel agent using online services.

“The Internet has made some aspects of travel easier, but there is always the possibility that your best laid plans won’t ultimately go as smoothly as you’d hope,” Nancy adds. “It’s always nice to have an advocate that is familiar with how the airlines work and understands what is possible and how to make adjustments on the fly. When things go wrong, we are the ones fighting for what our clients have paid for and it can mean the difference between a great vacation or a huge headache.”

So what happened to all the travel agencies we once took for granted?

“Many of the smaller agencies took a hit after 9/11 and then again in the recession,” Nancy notes. “Our most important source for new clients is referrals, so the fact that we had a strong base of satisfied clients really helped us during the lean years after 9/11. Consolidation of resources and the Internet also took a lot of the smaller agencies out

of the marketplace, so it says a lot that we’ve been around for 23 years.”

‘THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN’ Seven is the charm

good, rousing Western is always welcome at the cineplex, mostly because of its rarity these days. Hollywood has reached back to one of its best – John Sturges’ 1960 “The Magnificent Seven” – with a remake starring the formidable Denzel Washington.

Of course, that film was a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 epic classic, “The Seven Samurai.” That movie, set in feudal Japan, remains an iconic Western with some of the most poetic action scenes ever put on film.

Kurosawa wanted to pay homage to the master, John Ford, and he did it with plenty to spare.

What can you say about this new version? It’s good entertainment, but hardly reaches the classic status of its two predecessors.

One problem: In the first two, the mercenaries are working off of some classic code of honor that makes them want to defend the

villagers. Here, the motive is revenge, which weakens the plot a little. Also, changing the threat from marauding groups of bandits to an evil, scheming miner (Peter Sarsgaard) seems a lesser choice.

But the choice of Washington as the leader couldn’t be better.

Approached by a widow, Haley Bennett, to see if he could rid the town of Sarsgaard’s evil control, Washington then enlists the help of six supremely armed strangers to assist him – most notably Chris Pratt as a roguish gunslinger and Ethan Hawke as a Confederate sharpshooter battling inner demons.

The seven’s mission is to prepare the town for retribution for killing a handful of Sarsgaard’s goons. When the confrontation comes, it’s a really big one – perhaps the longest shootout ever put on film.

Handled nicely by director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”), action seekers will not be

disappointed. Neither will fans of Washington, who once again delivers a powerful performance. tws

Boise based nonprofit sends help to Haiti

Mission Aviation Fellowship, a worldwide nonprofit headquartered in Nampa, is playing a crucial role in getting aid to hurricane-ravaged Haiti.

On Monday, Mission Aviation Fellowship sent a mechanic from Nampa to Port-au-Prince to help with maintenance of its airplanes, which are used for relief flights into remote areas.

Those flights include delivering food, water and medical supplies to people in Haiti.

“When a national disaster like this happens, we start to ramp up on issues like water purification kits to go in because water’s a real issue, food, medical supplies and medical teams because there’s such a drastic need, and most of the parts affected you can’t get there except by an MAF airplane, so we really are busy, flying and doing what we do best and that’s reaching out to the Haitian people,” said MAF president John Boyd.

Mission Aviation Fellowship has a long history in Haiti, with an operating base there since 1986. None of their staff was injured during the storm.

The Blaine County Recreation District announced that season passes for the BCRD Nordic trail system are on sale now through bcrd.org.

Those who purchase online will save $50 on adult BCRD Nordic trail passes through Nov. 20. Season passes are $199 for adults during the preseason sale ($249 after Nov. 20), $29 for youth ages 13-17, and $49 for dogs. Children 12 and under ski free. Snowshoe season passes are available for $65.

The 160-kilometer BCRD Nordic trail system is one of the largest in the U.S. and offers some of the greatest diversity of Nordic skiing. The Sun Valley Center for the Arts invites the community to celebrate the installation of two public sculptures commissioned by The Center for its recent Craters of the Moon project – John Grade’s Spur and Jason Middlebrook’s Homage to the Limber Pine. A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the reinstallation site of Grade’s sculpture will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15, along the Wood River Trail in Ketchum.

Grade and Middlebrook’s sculptures were installed earlier this year at Craters of the Moon National Monument as part of a larger exhibition presented by The Center during the centennial year of the National Park Service. The two artists took inspiration for their works from the rugged, lunar-like landscape of Craters of the Moon in Arco, but they were also aware that their pieces would reside in Ketchum over the long term.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the reinstallation of John Grade’s Spur sculpture will take place in Ketchum at the fork in the Wood River Trail just south of Serenade Lane. Guests should park in the Lower River Run parking lot and walk approximately one-third of a mile south along the bike path.

hen looking out your kitchen window in the early morning hours you may notice a pink spiny flower that you don’t recall planting. As the Blaine County Bug Crew, we are here to enlighten you about this mysterious plant. This flower-bearing plant is known as spotted knapweed and is commonly found in our valley during this time of year.

Spotted knapweed is a shortlived perennial noxious weed.

This weed can produce up to 25,000 seeds, which are brown or black. The seeds can live in the soil for up to eight years. Spotted knapweed is easily recognizable by the pinkish-purple flowers that bloom from July to October.

The flower head bracts are blacktipped, giving the plant its characteristic spotted appearance.

Stems are typically 2-4 feet tall with lower leaves that are deeply lobed and upper leaves that are more linear. Spotted knapweed ranges from moist rangeland habitats to abandoned areas.

As an attempt to decrease the frequency of the presence of this noxious weed, we, The Blaine County Bug Crew, use the insect Cyphocleonus achates as a predator to target

populations. This root-burrowing weevil lays its eggs in the roots of the knapweed. The larvae then feed on the vascular tissue to reduce the plant’s density and vitality. The adults emerge from the roots between June and September to feed on the leaves and lay eggs of their own.
