Frederic Boloix Fine Arts Welcomes José Bedia Meet the world-renowned Cuban artist during Gallery Walk

F

rederic Boloix Fine Arts is excited to announce a new exhibit showcasing the works of Cuban artist José Bedia. Bedia’s work will be celebrated this Friday, Aug. 5, during Gallery Walk in Ketchum.

Having Bedia’s work locally is a testament to the art scene here in Ketchum, as Bedia has shown his works in the most prestigious private and public collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum, and the Guggenheim Museum, all located in New York City.

His works have also been shown at the Tate Modern in London,

the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C., Museo Nacional Palacio de Bellas Artes, in Havana, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, Pérez Art Museum Miami, (PAMM), and many others, and now he, as well as his work, will be right here in Ketchum.

Frederic Boloix, owner of the gallery, is thrilled to have this exhibit.

“I’m particularly excited about this show,” Boloix said, “because I’ll be presenting the world-renowned Cuban artist José Bedia to our community.

José will be here for a few days and he’s greatly looking forward to getting to know our area and its people.”

Boloix also explains why he

wanted Bedia to exhibit at his gallery.

“Bedia’s work had a big impact on me throughout the past 10 years and has had a prominent presence both in major museums and art fairs, and it always represented a special challenge. It reminds me of the Jungian archetypes emanating from a subconscious connection to symbols, which are very much present in tribal art. José has the most amazing collection of tribal art from all over the world that I’ve ever seen. He has an uncanny way of telling a story with simple gestures and techniques which are unique to him.”

Having Boloix obtain an exhibit from a world-renowned artist like Bedia is no surprise,

as he is no stranger to the art community.

“I came to the art business via my knowledge of art history and my fascination with the work of great artists,” Boloix said. “I lived in Europe for almost 15 years and the museums were like a second home.

“When I moved back to the States, I found myself in San Francisco, where I joined an important gallery in the late ’80s.

I eventually became assistant director of this same gallery.

This experience was pivotal to learning what I needed to know to start my own venture in the art business. Many of the clients I met back then are still with me today.”

Boloix has been in the art business since 1988. He moved to Ketchum in 1994 and opened his first gallery in 2000.

“My gallery focuses on 20th-century masters and con-

temporary art,” he said. “Over the years I’ve had numerous shows featuring original works on paper by Picasso, Matisse, Miro and other influential modern masters. The last few years I have dedicated the gallery walls to mid-career contemporary artists with worldwide recognition.”

Boloix invites everyone to come celebrate the works of José Bedia this Friday.

“We look forward to having everyone for the show this Friday. People will see the work of one of today’s premier artists and have a chance to meet him in person. He’s a fascinating man and his paintings are quite the trip.”

Boloix adds, “Plus, you can’t show a Cuban artist without featuring Cuba’s signature drink, the mojito.”

riesen Gallery celebrates UnCovered, the work of Chris Richter.

The exhibition showcases exciting new paintings in which Richter has transformed the image of trees or forests within the landscape into dynamic abstractions filled with color and depth.

“Through painting, I attempt to create

what happens in nature when I’m not there to observe it,” Richter says.

Richter is passionate about nature and begins his painting process with a hike from which he brings found pieces of nature back to his studio. Friesen Gallery is open seven days weekly throughout the summer.

25th Annual Plein Air Exhibition

lein air painting is a large part of Idaho’s history. Our early visions of the West came from plein air painters such as Thomas Moran (after whom Mount Moran was named) and Albert Bierstadt, among many others.

Each summer Kneeland Gallery invites its own group of plein air painters to participate in an artistic celebration featuring gatherings and events throughout the week. Paint outs, demonstrations and a quick draw all feature in the event, and spectators, fellow artists and collectors can enjoy the finished paintings at the culminating Gallery Walk on the final day.

The participating artists this year are Steven

Lee Adams, Jack Braman, John Horejs, Ovanes Berberian, Shanna Kunz, Lori McNee, Robert Moore and Bart Walker. The schedule is as follows: August 1 and 2, Shanna Kunz offers a twoday workshop, “Expressive Plein Air Painting”; August 3, the nine artists paint in scenic Stanley, Idaho; August 4, the artists return to Sun Valley to paint the grounds of the historic Sun Valley Lodge.

The final day, August 5, the artists will partake in a quick draw at noon at Ketchum Town Square, followed at 5 p.m. the same day by Gallery Walk.

ail Severn Gallery is excited to announce photographer Laura Wilson joining the gallery’s list of represented artists.

Laura Wilson’s exhibition features images from her impressive new book, “That Day: Pictures in the American West”, and is traveling to Gail Severn Gallery from the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. Through stunning black-and-white portraits, rodeo riders, a six-man high school football team, and the Hutterites of Montana, Laura dramatically explores debutante tradition, border issues, isolation, poverty and other symbolic images of the American West.

“There is the myth and the romantic West, which are, of course, deep within me, growing up as I did in the 1950s,” Laura says. “I was drawn to the landscape. I loved the sparseness and the openness, and I found myself interested in the people there in a way I hadn’t expected.”

Laura Wilson was the photography assistant to Richard Avedon, and her work has appeared in many publications, including The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, The Washington Post Magazine and London’s Sunday Times Magazine. She is the author of five books – “Hutterites of Montana”, “Watt Matthews of Lambshead”, “Avedon at Work”, “Grit and Glory and That Day: Pictures in the American West”.

Julie Speidel ‘Arundel’

J

ulie Speidel’s inspiration draws from her connection as a child with the ancient megaliths she encountered living in Europe, her memory of images of stained-glass windows at early morning services at Arundel Cathedral, and later, the pierced abstract constructivist artwork of sculptor Barbara Hepworth and the refined aesthetic sensibilities of Japanese art. All of these images and elements have stayed with her as she began printmaking on handmade Japanese Kozo paper, which she brought back from her travels to Japan in the 1980s.

Always evolving, Julie is creating these new woodblock printed works on paper after being influenced by historical Japanese print making techniques, yet she has created her own unique process. Each print is one of a kind, simple, elegant and easily recognizable as a totemic Julie Speidel.

Speidel’s sculptural works in bronze, stone, glass and wood and her print work in oil on paper grace collections throughout the world. Speidel’s art engages an extraordinary array of cultural influences, reaching back through antiquity to the Stone Age and Bronze Age peoples of Europe, the early Buddhists of China, the indigenous tribes of her native Pacific Northwest, and on into 21st-century modernism to be reinterpreted through her contemporary lens.

‘Nature’s Wonders’ – New Works By Jim Morgan Wood River Fine Arts

M

any of Jim Morgan’s inspirations come from an area just two blocks from the artist’s home in Mendon, Utah. The marshes of the Logan and Bear rivers create tremendous wildlife habitat on the floor of the Cache Valley. Each year sees the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migratory birds that form the core subjects of Morgan’s work. “Nature’s Wonders – New Works from the Artist’s Studio” will open at Wood River Fine Arts on Friday, August 5, 2016.

Jim Morgan’s paintings are in the permanent collections of the National Wildlife Art Museum in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. In 2015, the Woolaroc Museum in Bartlesville, Okla., hosted a retrospective exhibition of the seven greatest wildlife artists working today; Jim Jim Morgan, “The Nesting Tree - Wood Ducks,” oil on Morgan was one of the selected masters. His paintings have also been included in the international traveling exhibition of “Birds In Art.” Says Morgan about his work: “The most important aspect of being an artist is being a keen observer. Nature’s ever-changing moods are a wellspring of inspiration. My goals for my work are to enjoy the process of painting and seeing, to engage emotional participation from people who view the painting and to share the often overlooked, intimate aspects of nature.”

Western POP Broschofsky Galleries

he term “pop art” almost automatically brings to mind Andy Warhol. Warhol was in the forefront of bringing pop art to the attention of American art with the recognizable imagery of soup cans and portraits of Marilyn Monroe.

Warhol’s Western series, “Cowboys & Indians,” 1986, continued with this genre, using bright colors and squiggly over-paint lines.

Cowboys & Indians was the first portfolio in which Warhol was incorporating people and things together. The Cowboys & Indians portfolio contains images of General Custer, Annie Oakley and Geronimo. “Things” include kachinas from the Hopi Native American culture and the Indian head nickel.

Billy Schenck worked with Warhol but focused on Western imagery. Also bright-colored, his work derived from his fascination with comic books at an early age, especially Donald Duck, who he would spend hours copying images of. What Schenck refers to as his “paint-by-number” style produces flat, poster-like imagery characteristic of pop art with Western motifs from his real-life experience.

Theodore Villa’s work is distinctive in its dazzling saturation of watercolor paints. Of Apache heritage, Villa finds his subject in imagery from his Native American culture. He presents the artifacts with a contemporary twist by tricking the eye with repeated

images of cars, taxis, steamships and airplanes done in such a way that it appears to be a beadwork design on an Indian shirt or shield.

Russell Young is notable for his subversive art. One of his earlier series was titled “Pig Portraits” – actual mugshots of recognizable people including Martin Luther King, Elvis, Jim Morrison, Jane Fonda, and others. In his Indian works, Young has created large-format, 62-inch-by-48inch black-and-white portraits of Chief Curly Bear and finishes them off with “diamond dust,” giving them a glittery glow.

Rudi Broschofsky was 5 when Broschofsky Galleries opened in 1987. He grew up surrounded by Western imagery, but was also a child of the snowboard/ skateboard culture and the art style connected to that world.

His genre is urban art and with spray paint and stencil he creates his Western portraits and subject matter.

Kneeland Gallery hones the traditional genre 25th annual Plein Air Exhibition is underway

D

iane Kneeland is one of the doyennes of the Wood River Valley art world. In 1982, she and her late husband, George, started their first gallery, known as the Wood River Gallery, on Leadville Avenue in Ketchum, where PK’s now is located.

Five years later, George, a lawyer, built a home for Sun Valley Title, on First Avenue. The gallery moved into a space next door becoming the original gallery in West Ketchum on what is now known as “Gallery Row.” The gallery is known for the primarily Western artists it represents. The works run the gamut from landscape to realism and impressionism, along with some sculpture.

“I do think that what George loved the most was the art gallery,” Diane said. “I get a lot of credit for the gallery, but it was really George’s baby.

“Then, we all put our heads together to start the gallery association. He helped write the bylaws and get the gallery association organized. That was not business. It was pure love of art.”

That pure love also led to the Kneelands creating the annual Plein Air Exhibition, which will run this year for the 25th year from August 1 through August 5.

“The artists liked being here,” Kneeland said. “The event was actually suggested by one of the artists.”

Artists participate by invitation through Kneeland Gallery only, and many return. Three of this year’s artists are longtime participants: John Horejs, from Burley and Scottsdale, Ariz., has been to all 25 Plein Air Exhibitions; Robert Moore, from Declo, has been to 18; and Sun Valley resident Lori McNees has been to 13.

For this year’s event, there are different activities each day. The first two days artist Shanna Kunz conducted a workshop on Expressive Plein Air Painting. Today, Wednesday, Aug. 3, the nine participating artists will paint at a private property in Stanley, to which the public is welcome to come watch. On Thursday, the artists will be on the grounds around Sun Valley Lodge; and on Friday the quick draw event will take place in Ketchum Town Square. On that day the artists have just one hour to complete a painting. The event ends that evening during Gallery Walk with all the pieces on display.

Not surprisingly, fans who

watch the paintings being created become attached to these works, and “snap them up” during the weeklong event, Kneeland said.

“Part of the challenge is doing it in that time, capturing the light, and then seeing it up on the gallery wall later that day.

“There are a lot of repeat sales for certain artists. There are strong collectors of their work.”

Kneeland has a cohort in her longtime gallery director, Carey Molter. Molter moved to the U.S. from England in 1995, married Barrett Molter in 1997, and worked for Anne Reed Gallery.

Eighteen years ago, she began working at Kneeland.

“I raised my babies (now 15 and 11) in this gallery,” Molter said.

The warm relationship between Kneeland and Molter is palpable. They frequently laugh together, finish each other’s sentence and toss around inside jokes.

They both cite the friendships and acquaintances of the artists as strong motivating factors in continuing in such a tough business, especially during the recession.

“Surviving over the years has been tough,” Kneeland said.

“George would say the same thing if he were still here. You have to love art. We represent between 35 and 40 artists who make working here so pleasurable.

“We’ve also had marvelous women who’ve worked for us over the years, too.”

Molter agreed. “It’s a lovely business to be in, and surrounded by this art. We watch them grow and evolve and become well known.”

The gallery receives about 10 requests a month from artists who’d like to be represented by Kneeland Gallery. But, mostly, Molter and Kneeland are the ones on the lookout for new blood – something interesting and fresh.

“No one we asked has ever turned us down,” Kneeland said.

“We have a reputation. George and I made that a priority from the beginning; we pay the artists first.

“I think artists are the bravest people – to try to make a living and not give up their dedication.”

Kneeland Gallery is well known for its lively and well-attended Gallery Walk openings.

This Friday will be bigger than most due to the culmination of the Plein Air Exhibition.

“The public loves it,” Kneeland said. “Hopefully, they fall in love with the artists. We’re proud to host it. It’s more popular than it was. We’re flattered.” tws
