NEW QUAD WOULD OPEN UP ACRES OF SKIABLE TERRAIN

n Friday, skiers, boarders and other interested community members checked out the topography map and realigned lift line maps for a proposed Cold Springs Canyon Project at River Run Lodge. Sun Valley Co. employees, ski patrol and Ted Beeler – of S E Group in Burlington, Vt., designers of the project – were on hand for the presentation.

The Cold Springs Canyon Project, as proposed by the resort, has many elements. For the resort, it means a new, faster lift, with access to new skiable terrain. These elements are a “plus for visitors,” said Peter Stearns, the resort’s mountain manager.

An old chairlift that needs fixing constantly would be replaced, which is what “drove the project to begin with,” said Stearns.

The cozy two-seater chairlift from Cold Springs Canyon to the Roundhouse restaurant is the oldest on the mountain; parts are hard to come by these days.

It would be replaced with a highspeed, detachable quad originating at a new base terminal farther down Cold Springs Canyon.

Accessed from the Seattle Ridge area, the Lower Broadway run that winds around a tree-studded knob to the existing bottom of the Cold Springs lift would extend 3,400 feet farther down the canyon. The new lift would rise 1,525 feet and be a six-minute ride to a new top terminal at Roundhouse, where skiers and boarders could split either to Roundhouse Slope or to Christmas Lift.

The new extension of Lower Broadway would be about 180 feet wide. Nineteen new snowmaking guns would be added to the newly elongated run, which would be cleared and regularly groomed.

But one of the more attractive and intriguing aspects of the plan for skiers and boarders is the opening of that woodsy knob: 380 acres of north-facing trees to the south of Firetrail run, which would be accessed by dropping into Turkey Bowl.

“There will be an environmental assessment done in the next few months and some fieldwork this summer,” said Beeler. “And the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service will evaluate the whole stand of trees below and to the east of Turkey Bowl.”

While the new lift would traverse mostly BLM land, the new terrain is nearly evenly spit between the two federal agencies but is inbounds of the Sun Valley Ski Resort area.

The project would also open up skiing on Gun Ridge, depending on the amount of snow, said

Skooter Gardiner, the resort’s safety director. “We just have to make it all safe for the skiers.”

Stearns feels the new terrain will be an “adventure experience and a better guest experience.”

“The idea is to bring it inbounds and manage it with avalanche mitigation and ski patrol coverage,” he said. “Other than the Broadway run, it won’t be groomed. It’s all tree skiing.

We’ll get a recreational benefit.

We need terrain diversity, and it’s something we hear from guests.”

An existing mountain bike path that’s accessed from behind St. Luke’s Wood River would be improved, with switchbacks adding another 1.75 miles to the trail.

“It’s steep and rugged right now,” Beeler said. “It’ll be a bet-

ter trail.”

Work on the project, if approved by the Forest Service and BLM, is expected to begin in the summer of 2018. tws

VALLEY PARKS WAKE UP TO SPRING

Programs and improvements slated for coming season on tap

hen a valley is surrounded by vast wilderness to hike, bike, fish and recreate in, one might be forgiven for giving a fleeting glance to the parks that lie within the cities’ boundaries. But for many people—visitors and working stiffs, especially—these parks are a welcome way to bring the green into the concrete on a daily basis.

Parks have long served to connect city dwellers to nature, and offer a venue to congregate, picnic and play.

In the cities of Ketchum and Hailey, the parks departments have work slated to begin soon. Both cities manage 14 park areas.

Jen Smith, the director of Ketchum’s Parks and Recreation Department for the past seven years (and parks manager and city arborist for a decade before that), has a list of activities coming up.

“We run youth programs all year at Atkinson Park, plus adult opportunities like co-ed soccer, co-ed softball and pond hockey, and we also manage the city park spaces,” Smith said. “There are also sports tournaments, the Sun Valley Arts and Crafts Festival, barbeques and parties. We make sure that standards are kept up.”

Among Ketchum’s open areas are such pocket parks as Edelweiss, at the west end of Sun Valley Road, Farnlun Park, Lucy Loken Park and Little Park, along with wilder areas such as the Northwood Natural Area and Knob Hill.

“We even maintain the big rock behind the Church of the Big Wood,” Smith said.

“Resources are always an issue. The City of Ketchum tries to be pesticide-free, so

we integrate pest management without chemicals with a lot of aerating, irrigation management and soil amendments that are organic. We fertilize with a no-weed killer, so we live with the dandelions. It’s been pretty successful.”

The city is looking at ways to make the 6.5-acre Northwood Natural Area more accessible.

There’s been interest over the years to improve trails and make the area wheelchair accessible.

The Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency has been studying how to gain access to the Northwood Natural Area.

“It’s the Central Park of Ketchum,” Smith said. “It’s kind of a wild space. We want to be sensitive to the wildlife and the neighborhood. It’s kind of like the Draper Preserve in Hailey and the city would like to provide access in a very controlled and sensitive way.”

Guy Coles Skate Park is also up for some enhancements. The city is working with the skate community, in particular Jim Slanetz, a Ketchum councilman and owner of the Board Bin, and Andy Gilbert, owner of Press Print House and a snowboard coach with the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.

“We’ll be adding a streetscape area in the grassy area, with stairs, rails, tabletops and quarterpipes,” Smith said.

“We’re confident we can find support.”

new surface applied, new nets and lines.

“This will ensure long, long life for the courts,” Smith said.

Youth programs use the courts from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

At any other time they are open to the public. These are the only public courts in the north Valley, and they operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Smith added that pickleball lines will be added to the new courts, too.

The largest of Ketchum’s Parks Department areas is the Recreation Center at Atkinson Park, of which the courts and playing fields are a part. As well, there is a picnic and play area, the Rec Center itself, restrooms, a snack bar, and a host of other amenities and activities.

For 13 years it has been managed by John Kearney, the recreation supervisor,

with supervision of the youth programs by Doran Keys and Bobby Noyes.

Youth program registrations will begin April 24 online at a kiosk at the Rec Center or through Ketchumidaho.org/registration.

The 20-year-old Rec Center will receive a new carpet and new roof with solar panels this spring. The solar addition is part of a recommendation from the Ketchum Energy Advisory Committee on places they identified for energy opportunities.

Hailey has added several new neighborhood parks over the past 20 years, including the outdoor arena, expanded skatepark and the interpretive center at Werthheimer Park.

Ketchum Town Square Transferred To City

On Wednesday, March 22, the Ketchum Urban Renewal Agency transferred ownership of 4,112 square feet of property to the City of Ketchum. This property represents a large portion of the south side of Ketchum Town Square, including the stage, seating areas, public information kiosk, planter boxes, and public art areas. Transferring ownership to the City of Ketchum ensures that Town Square will remain a public asset in its current configuration, and KURA is making the transfer without consideration (i.e., with no cost to the City).

“We are grateful to KURA’s leadership for making this important and generous transfer,” said Ketchum Mayor Nina Jonas.

“KURA’s decision to secure Town Square as a public place will help ensure that the downtown area can maintain its charm— including public commons for all to enjoy—for generations to come.”

In 2015, KURA first discussed selling the building located at 491 Sun Valley Road, which is currently occupied by Visit Sun Valley, Starbucks, and Windermere Real Estate. The topic included discussion over the possible risk that a substantial portion of this property, which is part of Town Square, could be sold off by a future KURA board.

This potential type of transaction could have permanently altered the configuration of Town Square and would have run counter to the community’s desire for the Square to remain public space in perpetuity. To correct this issue, the KURA board hired a surveyor to realign the property lines to permanently protect Town Square as a city park.

New Music Director To Join Church

The Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood in Ketchum has hired Trent Austin as the fulltime director of music and worship. Originally from Oklahoma, Austin has played drums, guitar and produced with many Grammy and Dove award-winning musicians and songwriters in the gospel music scene in Nashville, Tenn., and the heart of the gospel tradition. From these roots, he applied a modern twist to venues such as Lifechurch.tv, Journey Church, Amplify Church, and was recently the global worship pastor at Victory Church in Oklahoma City. His wife, Keri, son Noah, and daughter Jonah will join him later this spring.

“We are excited that God is bringing Trent to serve with us, and believe that he will be a gift not only to our church, but that his experience and commitment to his art will enrich the community at large,” said senior pastor Mark Inouye. “Music transcends our differences and connects us not only to God, but also to our common humanity.”

GOVERNOR TO RESPOND TO 2017 LEGISLATIVE SESSION

T

he 2017 Idaho Legislature adjourned on Wednesday, March 29. The session lasted 80 days, about five days longer than average but not the longest on record – which was 118 days in 2003.

“Every session has a different personality, but this one really had an interesting personality,” said Brent Hill – Senate President Pro Tempore, R-Idaho Falls – during the last day of the session. “Nevertheless, we’ve accomplished some things that have never been accomplished before.”

During the session, Idaho lawmakers sent a total of nearly 350 pieces of legislation to Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter’s desk.

Otter has already signed more than 200 of those bills into law.

However, he still has to decide on some of the most contentious proposals passed this year.

Here is a recap of the more important bills voted on during this session.

Education Lawmakers agreed to boost public school funding by 6.3 percent, for a total of $1.7 billion.

The K-12 budget plan also includes $62 million to fund teacher pay increases, which is the third installment of a five-year plan to retain and attract teachers with higher salaries.

Otter signed the bill last week.

Taxes In a rather surprising move late in the session, both the House and the Senate voted in favor of a proposal that would repeal the current 6 percent sales tax on food purchases. The proposal would also eliminate the Idaho grocery credit that taxpayers de-

duct from their state income tax.

Otter has opposed the bill, stating that it would create a $50 million state revenue shortfall. On Monday, April 3, Lt. Gov. Brad Little urged Otter to sign the grocery tax repeal, but during a press conference on the same day Otter declined to say whether he would veto the bill or not.

Transportation Lawmakers agreed on a $320 million transportation funding bill. The bill essentially uses bonds to pay for new road projects and repay them with future federal highway payments, but it also includes allowing leftover state general funds to be used for transportation projects and funneling 1 percent of the state’s sales tax revenue to other road and congestion funds.

Idaho uses fuel taxes, registration fees and other funding sources to pay for maintenance and improvement of state and local roads and bridges.

The bill is on Otter’s desk, awaiting his signature.

Sign Language Two years ago, Otter vetoed a proposal requiring sign language interpreters to get a professional license from a state board. Agency officials have complained for years that they had to cut services and live on a limited budget because revenue from licenses, tags and permits hasn’t been enough to cover operational costs. Under the new law, resident hunting and fishing fees will increase 20 percent, starting in 2018. However, those who buy a license every year can avoid the increase through a so-called “price lock” component.

Civil Asset Forfeiture The Legislature changed laws that allowed law enforcement officers to seize a citizen’s property without charging him or her with a crime. The new legislation forbids law enforcement officers from seizing cash or property in close proximity to an illegal substance. Proposals that addressed the state’s stance on faith healing, strengthened victims’ rights and revamped Idaho’s 70-year-old system of doling out liquor licenses all failed to gain enough support to clear the Statehouse.

As well, the community has supported the building of the Hailey Skatepark and Hailey Ice at Werthheimer Park, the Hop Porter Park play structure, the Toe of the Hill Trail in Woodside, Jimmy’s Garden in Old Hailey, and the Bow Bridge over the Big Wood River near Lions Park.

There’s plenty to do to maintain the areas, including mowing, along with caring for all public trees, such as the Linden trees that line Main Street in Hailey.

“The city receives help from local landscaping companies through our Adopt-a-Park program,” said Stephanie Cook, director of Hailey’s Public Works Department’s parks division.

Hailey’s list of activities within its parks is seemingly endless: there’s fishing at Heagle and Lions parks; tennis courts at Heagle Park; volleyball at Hop Porter and Heagle parks; baseball, softball and basketball at Balmoral and Keefer parks; soccer (fútbol) at Roberta McKercher Park; a splash pad at Jimmy’s Garden; Frisbee golf at Keefer Park; and, of course, the activities at the rodeo grounds and skatepark.

Among the extras that occur at city parks are class reunions, sports matches, parties and festivals such as ArborFest and Trailing of the Sheep, antique fairs, Fourth of July and RiverFest activities. As well, The Hunger Coalition summer lunch program is at Balmoral, and the Blaine County Recreation District uses the parks all summer for their programs.

“There’s always stuff going on, but what we’ve been focusing on this winter is writing and submitting a grant, through the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, for overhauling Balmoral Park,” Cook said. “This will include improving the entry, providing ADA access, adding a pavilion with power, grills, a play structure, trees, benches, and improving the playing field.

If we get the grant, it will be done next year.”

Bellevue has two parks within the city—Memorial and O’Donnell—but one of its greatest draws is the Howard Preserve, soon to be expanded to 12.5 acres of natural beauty along the Big Wood River. The Howard Preserve is protected by the Wood River Land Trust, as is the Draper Wood River Preserve in Hailey.

Memorial Park is the site of the annual Labor Day celebration and has been used in the past years as the meeting spot for the motorcycle escort ride to Camp Rainbow Gold north of Ketchum. There have been concerts and festivals held there over the years.

O’Donnell is home to spring and fall softball league play, and youth and adult soccer.

A forum was held in Bellevue last night to address some issues on the parks and activities.

“Our parks are available for whoever wants to rent them,” said Frank Suwanrit, Public Works director for Bellevue.

he Limelight Hotel in Ketchum will be the venue for an all-inclusive Wild Bristol Bay sockeye salmon dinner Sunday, April 9. Tickets are $75 and a portion (after costs) of proceeds will go to the Idaho Conservation League and Idaho Rivers United.

The dinner is a joint effort.

Matt Luck, of Ketchum, owner of Pride of Bristol Bay, will donate the salmon; Sawtooth Brewery will donate beer; and Zenergy Health Club is covering costs of printing and outreach to members.

“They’re trying to encourage fundraising and community outreach,” said Liz Kantor, marketing director for Zenergy.

The dinner will be held in the hotel’s main lobby room.

For Luck, this outreach will be a continuation of the efforts he already makes to protect water and rivers.

“I give 10 percent of my pre-tax profits to the Alaska

Trout Unlimited,” Luck said.

“They’ve been the lead organization over the last 10 years in creating a huge national collaboration—Save Bristol Bay Campaign—between conservation organizations, recreation and commercial fishing to fight one large corporate project called Pebble Mine. The sockeye in Bristol Bay is the largest wild sockeye salmon fishery in world, with 47,000 million returning to Bristol Bay each year to spawn, and the Pebble Mine is proposed at the headwaters. It would be terrible. It’s a huge issue: a $1.5-billion economy plus tens of thousands of jobs in Western coastal states.”

Luck said that in Idaho it’s a “different place, but similar issues, for the two places I live and work. I think it’s important to support all of them.

“We all donated a little time, money, product and effort and we’ll have a nice dinner and hopefully raise a little money for the organizations.”

ERC Spring Exploration Series To Begin

The Environmental Resource Center’s 19th annual Spring Exploration Series begins today, Wednesday, April 5. This program will occur on Wednesdays and Thursdays, through May 18. It will bring presenters from across the Northwest to all second- and third-grade classrooms in Blaine County to deliver interactive presentations on various scientific topics ranging from force and motion to unusual fossils to plant and animal life histories.

Participating organizations this year are ERC, The Peregrine Fund, National Park Service–Hagerman Fossil Beds, Working Dogs for Conservation, Zoo Idaho, and the Idaho National Laboratory ESER program. This program is free for students and schools and occurs during school hours.

The Little Black Dress Club–Wood River, Knob Hill Inn, and Limelight Hotel are supporting this program.

Additionally, the ERC, College of Southern Idaho and the visiting presenters will offer complementary community presentations on Wednesday evenings starting at 6 p.m. at CSI as part of the ERC’s Spring Science Series. City of Rocks Photo Exhibit To Be Held

The Community Library will present an exhibit by the Sun Valley Photography Club, “City of Rocks National Reserve: A Photo Tour,” as part of the “Art in the Lecture Room” series, with an opening reception at 5 p.m. and special lecture at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 6.

Wallace Keck, park superintendent, will give a presentation on the ecology of City of Rocks and Castle Rocks, and members of the photography club will be present to discuss their work. The images showcase the spectacular and unusual landscape of southern Idaho that is perhaps best known among rock climbers, but it is in fact terrain that could fascinate people of varied interests.

“This exhibit and special lecture present a great opportunity for people to learn more about a beautiful hidden gem of Idaho,” said Jenny Emery Davidson, the library’s executive director.

The Sun Valley Photography Club was founded in 2007 following a photography workshop where participants enjoyed talking about their projects, learning together and sharing their images.

The photos in the exhibit were taken by the club members during an outing last September. A total of 12 photographers will participate, including: Becky Smith, Nils Ribi, Karen Pederson, Linda Parker, Fred Gray, Bob Law, Steve Heidel, Sandra Flattery, Marybeth Flower and John Finnell.

Volunteer Group Supports May Measure

The cities of Sun Valley, Ketchum and Hailey have all finalized ballot language for renewing the 1% local option tax for increased air service and marketing, known as the 1% LOT for Air. A ballot committee, called Tourism & Jobs: 1% LOT for Air, was formed to support the measure’s renewal because of the important role air service and marketing play in the local economy. The measure will be on the ballot Tuesday, May 16.

Funds from the LOT support new flights to Friedman Memorial Airport through air service contracts and marketing.

“It takes marketing to increase demand for new flights in new markets,” Doug Brown, chairman of the committee, said. “With funds from the 1% LOT for Air, Visit Sun Valley works tirelessly to build the Sun Valley brand awareness as it creates more visitation by air. The continuity of the marketing efforts helps build momentum in new markets.”

In the three years since the measure began, the economic boost associated with the increased visitation to the Valley ripples across restaurants, retail stores and everything in between. New visitors have spent $55 million in Blaine County, according to the yearly passenger surveys.

The 1% LOT for Air has also brought costs down for passengers. Over the three-year period, increased competition has resulted in an overall drop of 10 percent in ticket prices. The funds have also increased flight availability for the existing flights to Los Angeles and Seattle. “Of course, our community members benefit greatly with many new flight options and competitive fares. Family and friends love the new accessibility,” says Brown.

Traffic To Be Detoured Wednesday Night

Nighttime traffic will be detoured away from U.S. 93 beginning Wednesday, April 5 at 10 p.m. for repairs to the railroad crossing about two miles north of Interstate 84. Crews will replace several damaged concrete panels at the crossing throughout the night.

Work is expected to be completed by 4 a.m. Thursday and open to traffic prior to the morning commute.

Eastern Idaho Railroad and the Idaho Transportation Department will work to complete repairs to the Barrymore crossing near 300 South Road during the nighttime closure. Several concrete panels that support traffic across the tracks have broken or shattered through the winter months and created large holes.

U.S. 93 traffic will be detoured on Interstate 84 and Idaho 25 to access the west Jerome interchange (Exit 165). Access to the closure area and crossroads by local residents will be permitted during the closure.

Spring Cleanup For Homeowners

Spring is officially here, and it’s time to start on those home maintenance projects. The Idaho Department of Insurance encourages homeowners to inspect in and around homes for wear and tear from this year’s harsh winter. Improperly maintained homes can lead to expensive repairs down the road, and many of those repairs are not covered by a standard homeowner’s insurance policy.

“The purpose of homeowner’s insurance is to help you recover from sudden and accidental losses such as fire, windstorm, theft, or a broken water pipe,” said Dean Cameron, IDI director. “But damage that results from maintenance-related issues, like water damage from a leaky roof or a cracked foundation, may not be covered, as most policies say the policyholder is responsible for conducting regular preventive maintenance.”

The department says homeowners should conduct home exterior maintenance and reduce safety hazards.

PET COLUMN NO BONES ABOUT IT THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR APRIL 5 - 11 FROM PICABO ANGLER Fly-fishing in a reservoir or lake can seem somewhat intimidating, if for no other reason than the massive area there is to search. We take a closer look at stillwater fishing today, as this activity will consume a lot of our early-season fishing this year.

The rivers are going to remain far too high and too dangerous to fish well into July. Anglers that need to cure that fishing bug could be looking at places like Magic and Mackay Reservoir for their fix.

Our local reservoirs can be fished in numerous ways.

Boating will obviously get you to more places in order to search more water. It will also help you find the clean water or the line of demarcation. Oftentimes fishing this area between muddy water and clean water can be bountiful.

If you don’t have a boat, the next best thing is a float tube or pontoon boat. This will get you to areas you can drive to, and allow you to search bays, creek mouths, rocky points and other attractive areas for fish. Intermediate sinking lines or a dry line with a long leader will put you in the fish. Try to strip dark nymphs like Prince Nymphs and Leech patterns. Baitfish patterns are also a great way to go. Try to tie flies that have light bellies and dark backs. This combo is one that fish will key on.

If you don’t have a boat, a tube, or anything else that floats, you can still fish reservoirs from the bank. Try to find areas with depth, although you don’t need to fish too deep—most fish are found in the top 12 feet of the water column.

The best way to find attractive areas to bank fish is to look at the land around you. Generally speaking, what you see on the dry bank continues down into the water. So, if you see a steep bank, it probably continues deep.

If the bank is full of boulders, they are probably subsurface, as well. If the bank is flat and shallow, it may remain that way for some distance in front of you.

Check your surroundings and stay on the move. Fish have to eat. If you aren’t catching them, it may be because you aren’t finding them.

Finally, be safe! Wear a lifejacket when out over the water.

Be hyperaware of what the wind is doing, and don’t let yourself get blown into a place you can’t get out of.

Be safe and have fun. You may find reservoir fishing is more fun than you thought.

hen we get into trouble with our dog, many people head to the Internet to get information. As the information superhighway, there is so much out there to gather.

What becomes difficult for most people if they search diligently is that they will find conflicting information. Some information will say to never say no to your dog; never raise your voice; never do this or do that; or that there is only one way to train.

A truly gifted dog-training instructor will have many “tools” in their toolbox. They will have experience in prescribing what will be effective for your dog and for you. No two dogs are alike, nor are their owners; everyone has different needs, and every dog learns differently. Some dogs are extremely independent, as many of the terrier and livestock guardian groups of dogs are. Some dogs are very sensitive by nature, such as the hunting breeds, but at the same time, once their nose is engaged, they no longer have any emotional sensitivity. Many dogs have no interest in food. And, many dogs have more interest in chasing objects than in eating food, which can make food training almost impossible.

The point here is to tell you that when you find information on the Internet, the information is always generalized. Unless you are

face to face with an experienced instructor that has worked with hundreds of breeds and has experience with all training methodologies, picking training information off the Internet can be a hit-or-miss proposition. It may or may not fit for your dog and you. It is virtually impossible for anyone to prescribe what to do for a specific problem unless they know more about what your home life is like and what your individual dog is like. In short, if anyone that professes that one particular training technique is better than another or is the only way to train, they are not taking into consideration your individual dog and your circumstances.

I was reading a very wellknown publication a few years ago that was giving advice about what to look for in a good puppy trainer. Without exception, the article said to never use a trainer that raised their voice. Now, seriously, have you ever seen one dog “raise their voice” at another dog in order to stop an unacceptable behavior? Of course, we all have. Older dogs may growl or bark firmly, even with intimidation, to tell a younger dog its behavior is out of line. Is raising your voice always acceptable?

No, but if it does let a puppy know they shouldn’t jump on the coffee table and grab a cheese knife that might cut them, is this a bad solution? It depends on the dog. Some puppies are very sensitive to a firm voice. Others

could care less. If it is an effective consequence and does not abuse the dog, why don’t we use it? The point is not whether the use of a firm or raised voice is right or wrong, it is that to make a flat statement that a raised voice should never be used comes from someone who doesn’t understand natural dog behavior.

Checking with the Internet is always a good source to give you ideas. But, when it comes to finding excellent solutions, a certified dog-training instructor is going to be able to give you the best information and solutions for you and your individual dog.

There are excellent certifying organizations out there. Look for organizations that do not require one method of training but

rely on the professionalism of its members. The ones that are the most difficult are the ones I suggest. NADOI, the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors, is the most difficult and requires many years of experience before someone can even apply. Check it out. And good luck! www.nadoi.org.

have seen quite a few Canada geese recently. For many years the geese have used the local ponds as a resting stop.

I will see the geese for several weeks, usually in pairs of a male and a female, and then one day they will be gone.

Canada geese tend to be monogamous and will mate for life.

If one dies, the other might eventually find a new mate. The male is larger than the female, but otherwise they look very similar.

The female also makes a more gentle honking sound. The male can get notably aggressive, creating a racket when he gets riled up.

I have two Canada geese by my pond right now. Often I see them waddling down the driveway, or sitting on the pavement. I think they like the warmth when the sun is shining. If I walk or drive by, they become indignant and will slowly stand up, look at me intently, and then take their time exiting. Yesterday, the male waited so long he had to take flight.

He attempted to fly straight up into the air and had a lot of trouble taking off. He had so much trouble I wondered if he was molting, but it seems a bit early for that. The geese molt once the female lays her eggs. When they are molting, they cannot fly.

Last year, I had one lone male take up residence on a bench I have by a pond. He would sit there for hours in the sun. The trouble was that I also wanted to draw by that particular pond because it is a beautiful spot to

sketch in the springtime. He would honk and honk at me, quite irate, but we eventually established a truce and he would let me stand and draw nearby while he maintained his throne on the bench.

Today, I saw my pair of Canada geese with snowflakes over their bodies. They looked as if

they were questioning their plan of flying north so early in the season. Maybe they should have delayed their trip by a bit!

To survive inhospitable winter temperatures, ladybugs gather in a swarm to spend the season in a dormant state under a warm rock, a pile of protective leaf litter, or perhaps even in the walls of your home, often on a south-facing side. When they find a suitable spot, ladybugs release pheromones to signal their location to other members of their species. These chemical signals can be detected by other ladybugs up to a quarter of a mile away and can remain potent for years, leaving a lasting signal for other ladybugs to follow to safe havens during cold winters.

Following the same environmental cues as us, local ladybugs are now re-emerging from their winter havens. As we begin to uncover our gardens and plant our window box starters in fresh soil, many of these adults will make their way to our backyards and gardens.

Many species of ladybugs eat aphids and other herbivorous insects that feed on our homegrown produce; a single ladybug may eat about 50 to 60 aphids a day! Their hunting strategies are so efficient that researchers at MIT and Yale have used them as models for developing swarm behavior in robots that may be used for applications ranging from search and rescue operations to environmental monitoring.

With the appearance of their food source, ladybugs will begin laying eggs nearby and we will soon see a new generation of ladybugs develop and feed in backyards, building up energy stores to hole up and wait out next winter’s snows.

he sun is out, the snow is rapidly receding, and signs abound that spring has hit the Valley. While many of us are squeezing into our ski boots for the last days on the slopes, we are also dusting off our hiking boots and mountain bikes.

A flash of red catches your eye in the sagebrush as you walk your dog out Quigley one evening. Is that a cluster of early blooms, you wonder? You approach and notice that the red mass is moving!

Upon closer inspection, you realize that you are looking at hundreds of ladybugs crawling over the plants and rocks beside the trail.

Homo sapiens are not the only creatures beginning to emerge under the influence of warmer temperatures and longer days. Insects are coming out of the woodwork, both figuratively and literally, all around us. Though your backyard box elder bugs (Boisea trivittata) may have understandably taken refuge in your garden shed or under your deck, what are these ladybugs doing out on the hillside?

Ladybugs (also known as ladybirds or lady beetles in other parts of the world) are not technically a true bug but, rather, a family (Family Coccinellidae) of beetles comprised of over 6,000 known species. Like all insects, they are ectotherms, meaning that they are unable to generate their own body heat and must instead derive warmth from their environment.

While many adult insects die with cooling temperatures, leaving behind offspring to spend winter in an immature form, such as an egg or larvae, only to emerge as a newly metamorphosed adult in Sarah Bahan grew up in The Wood River Valley the spring, adult ladybugs hunker down and stick and currently works as a veterinarian at Sawtooth around.

veterinarian for as long as I can remember, like most kids, but I stuck with it,” Ciera said. “I’m really enjoying my internship here. I have learned so much and I’ve only been here for about three months. My mentor is Mark Acker, who is the main vet at the clinic. He teaches me about the medicine and what to do in a certain situation with the animal.

The vet technicians have a huge role in my learning here as well.

They teach me how to draw and test the blood, hold the animal, give IV fluids, and just anything that comes along that I will learn from.”

Ciera’s dad, Clint Blackstock, is one of Ciera’s biggest supporters.

“She just has this natural gift with animals,” Clint said. “The animals love her and she loves them. Her dog Petey is her best friend. Ciera takes him everywhere.”

For the rest of her high school career Ciera plans to continue working at the clinic or with other clinics in the Valley and attend a college in Colorado for veterinary medicine once she graduates from Silver Creek High School in 2019.

iera Blackstock has many passions, including softball, hiking, backpacking, dirt biking, music and working with animals. As a Silver Creek High School sophomore, Ciera is required to have an internship.

She did one better and got two full internships before the second semester could even begin.

Ciera’s current internships are at the Bloom Community Farm’s gardens with The Hunger Coalition and at the Sawtooth Animal Center in Bellevue. Because of the snowy winter, Ciera wasn’t able to work at the Bloom Farm, so she took her desire for working with animals and got her second internship at the animal clinic in February.

“I come in at nine every Tuesday and Thursday morning,” Ciera said. “Typically, there are a lot of appointments in the morning, so I go into the rooms and assist the vet. A normal checkup is usually checking the dog’s or cat’s lungs, temperature, teeth and body. We give animals the vaccinations that they need, and take bloodwork if there is something off about the animal, or if we need to operate on it later that day.

FLOOD PREPAREDNESS BEGINS NOW Need sandbags? Stop by The Senior Connection to pick some up

I

f you live in Blaine County, you’ve probably heard or seen recent flood warnings for our area. Some of you may be experiencing rising waters already. Do you know what to do to protect your family and property? Prevention and preparedness are key. Staff at The Senior Connection gathered information from local sources on measures that you can take to be ready if flooding occurs near your home.

An excellent source of information is the Hailey City Hall website, haileycityhall. org. There you will learn about emergency preparations, get local news and announcements, see a map of floodprone areas and assess what to do before and after flooding occurs. From this, you should be able to determine if your property is in real danger or if there is a likelihood that you will be spared.

If you are located in or near the floodplain, sandbags are invaluable for safeguarding your home. The Senior Connection can provide empty sandbags, which have been donated by Idaho Lumber and ACE Hardware. When or if the time comes, we also can provide sand, donated by Walker Sand & Gravel.

Sandbagging vulnerable areas of your property can be a time-consuming and exhausting effort. It requires filling woven plastic bags with sand and placing them around your property. The bags are heavy and it’s usually necessary to place them in a hurry. It is recommended that instead of surrounding the entire house with

sandbags, you place them at entries such as doorways, cellar windows and garage doors.

Try to recruit family, friends or neighbors in advance, who will help you fill the bags and place them for you when the time comes.

There are a few other things you can do in advance to prepare your home. If you have a basement, raise any valuables off the floor; the same goes for a refrigerator or other appliances. Also, it’s a good idea to pack a “go bag” filled with your medications and essential items you may need in case you’re suddenly required to evacuate. If you’re on oxygen, include an extra bottle in case of a power outage. Keep this bag near the door you’ll use to leave.

The Senior Connection has been designated an official Red Cross Disaster Relief Center. If Blaine County should be declared a disaster area in the event of a countywide disaster such as flooding, the Red Cross will occupy The Senior Connection to make sure people have a safe place to stay, a hot meal and access to other support from trained Red Cross staff and volunteers.

While our hope is that we will never need to do this, it’s reassuring to know that the Red Cross and Senior Connection will partner to provide shelter, food and comfort.

elebrate the mountain lifestyle and revel with the locals at the fourth annual Sawtooth Regional Gelande Quaffing Championships.

An ode to ski culture’s colorful past, this festive fundraising event will take place from 4:208 p.m., Saturday, April 8 at Apple’s Bar & Grill in Ketchum.

The Cellar Pub and Mountain Approach will host the gathering and proceeds will benefit the Sawtooth Avalanche Center.

The greatest beer-sport most people have never heard of, gelande quaffing was born in 1986 with the help of the “Jackson Hole Air Force.”

“The infamous underground crew of the Jackson Hole Air Force was going stir-crazy in the Bear Claw Café waiting for the mountain to open,” states a press release from the Sawtooth Gelande Quaffing Championships. “In those days, the bartender would send a freshly filled beer mug sliding down the bar to the patron who ordered it.

One fateful night a beer mug slid of the end of the bar, took air, and was caught seconds before a glass-shattering catastrophe— and promptly pounded. Gelande quaffing was born. Après-ski

competitions followed, testing the unique skills of all who entered and provided exciting entertainment for all spectators.”

This year, 16 five-person teams will go head to head in the Sawtooth Regional Gelande Quaffing Championships. One team captain will pour beers for the four participating quaffers on their team. Quaffers must be 2 feet from the edge of the bar/ tabletop and rotate the pitcher/ thrower and quaffer/drinker every pitch. Quaffers must quaff the beer, not wear it, and vomiting will result in immediate team disqualification. The first three rounds will last one minute; the finals will be two minutes long.

“Two tables side by side compete on gaining as many points as possible in one-minute rounds,” said Rick Lethbridge, event coordinator. “Depending on how you catch the beer determines the amount of points.”

Lethbridge, co-owner of The Cellar Pub in Ketchum, annually coordinates this hilarious event for the community with Peter Prekeges, owner of Grumpy’s and the Silver Dollar Saloon in Bellevue, through their nonprofit organization. The team also organizes the Ketchum Wide Open (Saturday, May 20) and

Nightmare on Main Street.

“It’s a great event to bring young people together and celebrate the life of living in the mountains,” Lethbridge said.

“The event is a good fit for the younger audience to compete, but a great fit for anyone to watch.”

Qualifying rounds will commence at 4:20 p.m. at Apple’s Bar & Grill. The finals will take place around 6 p.m. Awards will be given to the winners and best costumes, based on a team theme.

All proceeds from the Sawtooth Regional Gelande Quaffing Championships will benefit the Sawtooth Avalanche Center, which collects data and forecast information to produce daily avalanche advisories for approximately 6,000 square miles, while additionally offering numerous avalanche safety classes throughout the winter.

LESLIE SERRANO Humanitarian

Wood River High School senior Leslie Serrano has an impressive résumé. She is president of the Amnesty International club, a yearbook editor, a member of Teen Council, and an honors student with a 4.125 grade point average who has already been accepted to some top colleges. She also performs in Drumline, an all-percussion group that plays at football and basketball games, and works at The Kneadery in Ketchum on the weekends to earn money for college.

With Teen Council, Leslie lobbied in the Idaho Legislature and in Washington, D.C., for more funding for comprehensive sexual education.

“Basically, I’m a humanitarian,” she said. “For a long time people would ask me what I want to do and I know I just want to do something that allows me to help other people.

I don’t know how, but I’ll get there.”

And, with Amnesty International, Leslie does just that.

“We’ve done projects like item drives for the refugee center in Twin Falls,” she said.

The club goes door to door locally to collect used clothing and household items and then brings them to the center.

“The refugees are basically given nothing,” she said. “We want to welcome them and show them that although there’s controversy, there are people who care about them and want to welcome them to their new home.

“I’ve already gotten the opportunity to meet some refugees and it is really humbling.

I realize that I have problems but they are nothing compared

to this. It’s mind opening to see a little girl wearing boy’s clothes because that’s all the entire refugee center could give them that would fit. I realize how lucky I am knowing that I’m safe here and didn’t have to escape my country to have a better life.”

Leslie is a first-generation American.

“My dad came here escaping the civil war in El Salvador. My mom came from Mexico and has a lot of influence on who I am. She has 12 siblings and she helped support her family.”

For her senior project, Leslie wrote a book about immigrants and refugees.

“I interviewed immigrants about their experience coming to the U.S., why they came over here. I met four brothers from the Congo, a man from Egypt and another from Nepal.

I learned a lot about the world.

Each chapter is about a different person.

“Immigrants come over for economic reasons. Refugees come over here to save their lives. They’ve been through so much—to hell and back—and yet they still have this hope. It’s inspiring. The refugee center is really good because it makes sure if they’re my age they’re getting them into high school or to get their GED or to go to CSI. They get English classes.”

Leslie wants to major in political science and minor in psychology, and then go to law school to perhaps become an immigration or human rights lawyer. One college she applied to has an internship with the United Nations.

“It would be cool to be an intern for the UN,” she said. tws

ast month, we introduced Blaine County Food Council, a group of community stakeholders and professionals committed to closing the gaps in Blaine County’s food system. To guide its work, BCFC recently established two priority areas with respect to increasing access to fresh, locally grown foods: schools and restaurants.

Based on five guiding principles that include health, access and collaboration, BCFC members have agreed to support public and private schools and food businesses by offering local and regional products. Increasing demand for local food stimulates business and security for the entire supply side of the food system—farmers, processors, distributors, chefs and grocers, to name a few.

BCFC will work directly with schools to find ways to include fresh ingredients that support children’s health, food economy and the environment.

This has been accomplished in districts across the nation; the National Farm to School Network and pioneers like chef Ann Cooper of the Chef Ann Foundation and John Turenne of Sustainable Food Systems have designed tools to support this change.

“Restaurant procurement”— how restaurants source their ingredients—is another power-

ful food economy driver. CK’s Real Food and Ketchum Grill, for example, have long championed local and regional foods, but, due to lack of processing and distribution infrastructure, many restaurants cannot yet make it work.

Wood River Valley HarvestFest, an annual event in downtown Hailey, is designed, in part, to give participating restaurants a risk-free opportunity to partner with local producers. These farmer-restaurateur relationships strengthen community and economic fabric, and can lead to increased local sourcing.

By identifying and addressing weaknesses in our food system, BCFC is committed to making local and regional ingredients more accessible.

The training covers topics that include listening skills, family violence, child abuse and neglect, substance abuse, mental illness, sexual assault, suicide intervention and resources available in the community.

This Tuesday will feature Nancy Kneeland on suicide intervention/substance abuse, and Officer Steve England, Hailey Police Department, on 911 calls plus welfare checks and intervention. ‘NATUREPLAY’ WEDNESDAY APRIL 12

6:30PM / COMMUNITY CAMPUS / HAILEY A Danish documentary, “NaturePlay: Take Childhood Back,” will screen for free at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 12 at the Community Campus in Hailey. The documentary delves into the idea that children are the world’s most endangered species. The film declares: “Children belong in nature, and nature belongs in education.”

According to a review at Treehugger.com, Danish filmmaker Dan Stilling (“The Martian”) and American producer/writer Aimie Stilling went to “Scandinavia to show how children are educated there, in stark contrast to the U.S. approach. The result is a beautiful 80-minute documentary that moves between the forests near Copenhagen to the fjords of northern Norway, looking at the unusual and truly wonderful ways in which Scandinavian children are taught. The film has been very well-received.”

How To Play Sudoku

The Classic Sudoku is a number placing puzzle based on a 9x9 grid with several given numbers. The object is to place the numbers 1 to 9 in the empty squares so that each row, each column and each 3x3 box contains the same number only once.

OBITUARY

TED UHRIG

T

headore (Ted) Kenneth Uhrig, a resident of Shoshone and a longtime resident of Hailey, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Twin Falls.

Ted was the son of Bill and Alta Uhrig and a brother to Willie and Christa. He grew up in Hailey where he met and married the love of his life, Maxine. Together they raised six boys: Ken (Denise), John (Lennie), Scott (Chris), Ed, Curtis (Lisa), and Philip (Jennifer).

One of Ted’s biggest enjoyments came from many years operating a cattle ranch. Riding a good horse and working cattle was a big part of his life. He was often referred to as the “Marlboro Man.” Ted truly loved the Hailey “Days of the Old West” Rodeo and volun-

teered his time and expertise as the arena director for many years. Seven times the Hailey rodeo received the “IMPRA Rodeo of the Year” award.

He also spent many winters driving sleighs and racing chariot teams.

Ted served as Blaine County assessor from 1990 to 1998. After retirement, he and Maxine moved to Shoshone, at which time he became a state brand inspector.

Ted and Maxine devoted their time to supporting their children and grandchildren in all their activities.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Alta Uhrig, and by his wife, Maxine.

A celebration to share memories with family and friends will be held from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 8 at the Lincoln County Community Center, 201 S. Beverly St., in Shoshone.
