School board to interview candidates for vacant Zone 5 seat tonight

The Blaine County School District Board of Trustees will conduct interviews with the applicants to represent Zone 5 at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb.15, in the Minnie Moore Room of the Community Campus in Hailey. The interviews will be open to the public and can also be viewed via a webcast; the public, however, will not be allowed to comment during the interview process.

Candidates will introduce themselves and explain their interest in the position. School board clerk Amanda LaChance will ask each candidate six predetermined questions.

Four applicants sent a letter of interest to LaChance. All are residents from Zone 5, which includes the area north of Quigley Road, east of Buttercup Road, and Highway 75 to Ketchum. They are Richard Canfield, Kevin Garrison, Dagmar Salmon and Andrea Reid.

The board of trustees declared the vacancy in January following the resignation of Elizabeth Corker. Should a candidate be appointed, a swearing-in will take place during the regular board meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

he City of Hailey’s Pathways for People initiative, to begin in May, will repair, design and construct sidewalks, bike paths, trails and bike-pedestrian infrastructure to more safely move pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles on key streets through Hailey. The funds come from a two-year levy on Hailey homeowners that will raise a total of $800,000 over the two-year period.

Some sidewalks in the downtown core were already improved using a method called slicing that is more economical than pulling up the existing pavement.

Mariel Miller, City of Hailey public works director, said the city would implement the improvements in phases.

“We have a bunch of different roadway and bike path projects going on for the next four to five years,” Miller said.

“Right now we have $100,000 identified for improvements.

We’ve already spent not quite half and we’re addressing the lowest-hanging fruit. We’ve identified all areas of downtown that need to be improved, such as the oldest sidewalks.

In the next year or two, we’ll plan where the rest of the money will go. Right now we’re

focusing on the bike corridors of Croy Street and Second Avenue sidewalks.”

Both of these street corridors are identified in the Blaine County Community Bike/Ped Master Plan, as well as the city’s Title 18, Mobility Design, as in need of bicycle facilities.

The Second Avenue path will run from Myrtle Street in north Hailey to Hailey Elementary School on Elm Street.

It will be designed as a dashed bicycle lane, also known as advisory bike lane, which is a modification of traditional bicycle lanes. In dashed bicycle lanes, bicycles stay in their designated bike lane and vehicles share a single travel lane.

Vehicles may cross over into a dashed bicycle lane for passing purposes (when an oncoming car is encountered), but only when bicycles are not present.

The path on Croy Street will run from Main Street to the Wood River Trail, at Fifth Street. There will be a twoway separated bike lane on the south side of the street.

“That’s to preserve parking in downtown, between Main and Second,” Miller said.

“That’s all we have funding for for this phase.”

Former Chief Justice Jim Jones to do booksigning in Hailey

Jim Jones, former Idaho Attorney General and Supreme Court Justice, will sign his recently-released book, “A Little Dam Problem,” at the Hailey Public Library from 2-3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27. The book documents one of most contentious and hardfought water disputes in Idaho history.

In November 1982, the Idaho Supreme Court issued a ruling that gave Idaho Power Company practical control of the Snake River. Jones, a Republican, took office as attorney general in 1983. He teamed up with Democratic Governor John Evans to bring the Snake back under state control. Jones’s book takes us through the water fight as the combatants struggle through two legislative sessions, a hotly contested election, an acrimonious public debate, and numerous legal proceedings in Idaho and Washington, D.C. Former Speaker of the Idaho House of Representatives Bruce Newcomb wrote that the book reads like the old Wild West stories about fights between land barons who tried to corral all of the available water and keep it out of the hands of homesteaders. The culmination of the Swan Falls water rights fight set the stage for the future allocation and management of the Snake River.

partment, including sidewalks and crossings to the Wood River Middle School. The Hailey Elementary School was completed five years ago.

The next phase will include a separate shared-use lane from the Wood River Trail west to Main Street on Myrtle Street.

“We will use levy funds to provide a 7.5 percent match for a grant we received from ITD to construct a separated shared use path along East Myrtle and improved pedestrian crossing at Myrtle and Main streets,” Miller said. “This use of leveraging city funds to provide a grant match allows the levy money to go much further than it would otherwise.”

The city’s match with levy funding will be $152,710 while the ITD match will be $499,896.

These are preliminary cost estimates, Miller said.

“The other project we anticipate after Myrtle is not fully developed,” Miller said.

That project, not yet fully developed, will entail a bike path from South Main Street through Wertheimer Park, where the ice rink, skate park and rodeo grounds are, to an existing pedestrian easement on the west side of Nelson field, terminating at Elm and First. tws

TWO HAILEY MEN EMBROILED IN BUNDY TRIAL IN NEVADA

W

hy did several Idaho men end up at a protest near Bunkerville, Nev., supporting someone they’d never met, Cliven Bundy, against federal agents in April 2014?

That question and the following actions of the so-called Bundy Ranch Protest are at the heart of the first of three trials currently being held in the Clark County Courthouse in Las Vegas. Stephen Stewart and Eric Parker, both of Hailey, are among the six defendants in the first trial, which began last Thursday and continues this week. Testimony is expected to take about 10 weeks.

Stewart and Parker are accused of conspiracy, illegal use of firearms, extortion and threatening federal officials. They’ve pleaded not guilty, and deny agents were threatened.

The disputes stem from the refusal of Bundy to pay his grazing fees to the federal government for land, from 1993 to the present, where his cattle continue to graze in the Gold Butte area in Clark County. In 2013, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management said it would round up 500 to 900 cattle, but suspended the operation out of safety concerns for people involved with the roundup. Finally, in March of 2014, the BLM issued a notice of intent to impound unauthorized livestock grazing on BLM and National Park Service lands. The roundup began April 5.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Parker, Stewart, Scott Drexler of Challis, Idaho, and Todd Engel of Boundary County, Idaho, said they’d seen online postings calling for militiamen, regarding a First Amendment issue, and had not been called by Bundy.

The paper also wrote that Engel said he “knew nothing about the Bundy family or the BLM when he and two friends drove

12 hours to Bunkerville, Nev. ‘I didn’t conspire with anybody because I didn’t know anybody,’ he said.”

On Monday, during the trial, images taken by an FBI agent in a single-engine plane overhead showed about 200 people on foot and on horseback. Above them, people were spread along the concrete side barriers of the freeway overpass, watching. Many had phones that were used to photograph the events.

The crowd faced a trio of pickup trucks and perhaps two dozen armed and armored federal agents and BLM employees guarding corrals holding the disputed cattle wrangled in previous days.

On Tuesday, the defense began cross-examining BLM agent Rand Stover and played a video of Cliven Bundy’s son, Ammon Bundy, being tasered by agents with dogs.

According to a live interview on New America Media, taped April 11, 2014, Cliven Bundy’s sister, Margaret Bundy Houston, said she was blocking some BLM trucks when a federal agent tackled her just before Ammon was tasered.

“He threw me down,” she said.

“It was a pick-up throw. That’s when it really did escalate.”

According to Houston, these actions by the authorities precipitated the armed standoff on April 12. A well-known photo of Parker with a rifle pointed down at the protest area was widely circulated. Photos of the other defendants holding rifles were shown in court on Monday.

According to Parker’s attorney, Jess Marchese, the trial will resume late next week.

The second trial, for the leaders of the standoff, including the Bundys, will begin 30 days after the first proceeding. The third trial for the remaining defendants will commence 30 days after that one ends. tws

Fireworks bill doesn’t make it out of committee

According to The Spokesman-Review, on Monday, in committee, the Idaho House of Representatives voted down legislation to ban the sale of fireworks in Idaho.

Shooting off aerial fireworks is illegal in the state, but a legal loophole allows them to be sold at two locations in southwestern Idaho, as long as the purchasers sign an affidavit saying they won’t be setting them off in the state.

“It was clear by the actions of the committee today they do not care about firefighter safety, or if people’s homes and lives are being destroyed by illegal fireworks every year,” Dennis Doan, Boise fire chief and a prime backer of the bill, said in a statement. “The exorbitant cost to taxpayers and local governments, and the fact that six homes in Ada County were burned down last year, was not enough to influence their decision to print a bill which would allow a full hearing and dialogue about this important issue.”

The bill’s sponsor, House Minority Leader Mat Erpelding, D-Boise, agreed. “If houses in the Treasure Valley burn, it’s the State Affairs Committee’s fault.”

'BORN INTO EXILE' TO SCREEN IN VIRTUAL REALITY

he Family of Woman Film Festival will present a special virtual-reality documentary, “Born Into Exile,” on the life of refugee women and girls and, in particular, their issues with pregnancy and childbirth.

The 10th annual Festival, which runs Monday, Feb. 27 through Sunday, March 5, will also feature Sarah Costa, of the Women’s Refugee Commission, speaking at the Bonni Curran Memorial Lecture for the Health and Dignity of Women at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28; the screening of six films; and two POV breakfasts.

The Festival annually supports the efforts of the United Nations Population Fund, known as UNFPA, which is the lead agency for the care of women, from sexual health to childbirth and beyond.

Its mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.

Globally, more than 500 women die daily in crisis situations due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth.

“Born Into Exile”—at little over eight minutes long—was

created by the UNFPA several years ago at the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan. It traces the story of two women—both pregnant and due to deliver imminently.

Victoria was a child bride at 16. Within a year, she is expecting a child. Early marriage and adolescent pregnancy is increasingly common in the camps due to financial difficulties. More families are forced to marry off their daughters before they reach 18—often as young as 12.

Tahany, 29, is also pregnant, though this will be her fifth child. Two of her children were injured in the Syrian conflict, now in its fifth year. Tahany is nervous about the upcoming birth, as she’s anemic and the camp has no blood bank. She is determined that, despite her circumstances, her daughters will complete their education and be able to attend university.

For several years Schoen championed selling the property for the highest price. But after a year on the market with no cash offers, the commissioners accepted the $1.85 million bid from the Alpine Investment Group comprised of developers John Sofro and Michael Page, along with Ketchum restaurateur Tom Nickel.

AIG intends to build a family entertainment center on the land, including a bowling alley, arcade and restaurant. The City of Hailey, Wood River Fire & Rescue and the Hailey Fire Department wanted to acquire the land for a new fire station but did not make a cash offer. The commissioners agreed the public interests were better served by putting the proceeds from the sale toward the county’s future capital needs.

laine County Commissioner Larry Schoen is serving his fourth term representing District 1, which includes the entire county south of Fox Acres Road in Hailey and Broadford Road in Bellevue. He is only the third person in Blaine County history to be elected four times to the Board of Commissioners.

As current vice-chair of the commission, Schoen serves with chairperson Angenie McCleary, who has served since 2008, and Jacob Greenberg, who has served since 2012.

In a recent interview, The Weekly Sun asked Schoen about what he considered to be some of the highlights for the county in 2016. He quickly pointed to the July sale of the Blaine Man-

ism, one of the most prestigious journalism schools in America, said, “Journalism taught me to ask questions and keep asking them.”

He credits that practice in his professional life as a farmer and in civic life as a commissioner with keeping him growing, learning and “caring about Americans.”

As the second of his noted highlights for 2016, Blaine County became the first county in Idaho to officially oppose the transfer of federal lands to state ownership.

Among the reasons for passing the resolution: Protecting the county’s heritage of public access to pristine wilderness, business difficulties the Valley would face if access to public lands were cut off and an argument that “the human, financial and material resources needed to manage and maintain these federally-administered public lands, their various facilities, including roads, trails, rest areas, etc., or to administer responsibly the grazing, mineral- or timber-related activities occurring on them, greatly exceeds the capacity of the State of Idaho.”

Schoen considers himself a product of the ’60s’ and ’70s’ era of Vietnam, Richard Nixon, protest music and demonstrations like Earth Day, on April 22, 1970. He walked with some of his classmates from Langley High School near Washington,

Learning Center students donate to wildlife efforts

Each year, children from the Hailey-based Learning Garden School participate in a Valentine Fundraiser to benefit a community organization. Presented with several options, the children—ages 3 through 5—vote for the organization of their choice.

This year, the children chose to give the $300 they raised with Singing Tele-phone Grams to the Idaho Department of Fish & Game’s Winterfeed project.

“We selected this charity for the class upon discovering that emergency winter feeding of elk and mule deer had commenced in order to help the animals survive this particularly harsh winter,” said Beth Crawford, school co-director.

The Learning Garden School Valentine Fundraiser began nine years.

“We feel it’s critical to instill in children at an early age the desire and benefit in giving to others,” said Darcy Van Steelant, school co-director. “We’ve continued their tradition of giving in February.”

Singing Tele-phone Grams costs $8 a song or poem. In addition, this year The Learning Garden School offered videos for $10.

The Senior Connection, Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley, The Hunger Coalition, Sawtooth Botanical Garden, Environmental Resource Center, The Chamber of Hailey and the Wood River Valley and Heifer International are past recipients of The Learning Garden’s February giving projects.

Ketchum seeks professional artists for upcoming projects

The City of Ketchum seeks qualifications from professional artists for installation of public art for several city infrastructure projects, including sidewalks, chainlink fences, building walls and trashcans.

The Ketchum Arts Commission, whose mission is to integrate arts and culture into the community’s life, will select artists to be included in the prequalified artist pool.

The City of Ketchum devotes 5 percent of public capital improvement budgets to the arts. This is believed to be the highest percentage of any city in the nation. The city previously devoted 1.33 percent to art. The higher figure makes larger projects possible.

The deadline for submissions is March 9.

The Ketchum Arts Commission also selected “Wagon Days” as its theme in celebration of the event’s 60th year. Artists may submit artwork related to the parade, the ore wagons or the history of mining in the Wood River Valley. There is no fee to apply for either project.

“Art in City Hall” will feature art in the city council meeting room at Ketchum City Hall.

This is the first year that the Ketchum Arts Commission has released a call for artists for this exhibition. The Art in City Hall exhibition is in its fourth year. Artists must submit up to five original, two-dimensional works for consideration for Art in City Hall.

“Wagon Days Poster and Souvenir Art” will be selected from artist submissions for Art on Fourth who choose to have their entries considered. Artists interested only in the Wagon Days Poster and Souvenir Art will also be considered. Selected artwork will be the official poster for the 2017 Wagon Days, and will be incorporated onto items such as commemorative mugs, pins and T-shirts.

Selected artists will receive a stipend of $350. The deadline for submissions is April 7 Photographers, graphic artists and others working in creative fields are encouraged to apply.

Blaine County Commissioners sign mental illness Stigma-Free Pledge

Working with the National Alliance on Mental Illness-Wood River Valley, the Blaine Co ty Commissioners recently signed the “Stigma-Free Pledge.” Blaine County joins hundre of companies, local communities and national leaders in promoting acceptance and und standing of those living with mental health conditions. NAMI-WRV and the Blaine Coun Commissioners hope that this will encourage the county to challenge social stereotypes and to help shift social and systemic barriers to those living with mental health issues.

“Mental health challenges are one of the most significant issues facing the communit Angenie McClearly, Blaine County Commission chair, said. “By signing this pledge, we ho to raise awareness about the need for increased care, services and compassion for thos with mental illnesses.”

According to NAMI, untreated mental illnesses costs the economy nearly $200 billion lost earnings each year.

Other businesses can also sign the Stigma-Free Pledge to support the campaign by m ing a donation for a stigma-free ribbon—created by Windy City Arts—to affix in storefro and other high-trafficked areas.

Papoose Club to host Croy Cup, Kindercup

The Papoose Club will hold its 12th annual Croy Cup on Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Croy N dic Center just west of Hailey.

The Croy Cup is a fun, free event for young cross-country skiers ages 3-13 and feature ski races in both skate and classic categories. Registration will be held from 10-10:30 a.m on the day of the event and the racing action will begin at 11 a.m. Refreshments and tre will be offered.

The Papoose Club volunteers in partnership with staff from the Sun Valley Ski Educati Foundation’s Nordic ski program and Blaine County Recreation District.

This event was introduced in 2006 as a cross-country skiing complement to the Papo Club’s longstanding downhill skiing event for kids—the Kindercup—which will be held fo the 61st year, Sunday, March 5 at Dollar Mountain in Sun Valley.

The Kindercup, to be held March 5, is a free kids downhill race organized by Papoose Club volunteers in partnership with the Sun Valley Company Race Department and the S Valley Ski Education Foundation. Skiers and snowboarders between the ages of 3-12 are invited to participate. Check-in and bib pick-up are at 8:30 a.m., and the races will start around 10:15 a.m.

THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 15-21 FROM PICABO ANGLER

O

ur wintery mix continues with precipitation, snow, rain, and temperatures that hover around freezing. This mix of weather will make for an equal mix of great, decent and slow fishing; it is all going to depend on your timing. The end of this week and the beginning of the weekend should bring some clouds and low pressure.

This should put the fish on the bite and should also spur on the Midge activity, hopefully making for some nice surface opportunities with a Midge dry fly.

If you choose to wait until the sun is out, be prepared to fish a little deeper with Nymphs or Streamers. The bright sun definitely makes the fish a bit more shy or, on Silver Creek, a lot more shy. If this is the case, you need to go to where the fish are.

This may mean they are finning tight to structure or sitting in the bottom of a deep hole or they are under a cut bank.

When the fishing is tricky under bright light, it is the angler willing to set up differently for each situation that will excel.

The flip side to that coin is to rig up something you are confident in and fish it through all the water types, with a goal of staying on the move and covering more water, and less “situations.”

While we move closer to spring, be prepared for some serious volume of water moving through our systems. Currently, there are many reservoirs draining, or about to be drained, to make room for the spring runoff. This could mean we are cut off from many of our favorite late-winter fisheries, like the Big Wood canyon below Magic Reservoir, the South Fork of the Boise and the lower Lost River.

So far these rivers remain fishable, but it is advisable to check the cfs on the USGS website before you go.

Any true flows below Magic Reservoir require a boat to fish most areas, as the riparian area here comes right to the water’s edge; the South Fork of the Boise needs to be around and below 300 cfs for the best wade fishing; and the lower Lost needs to also be around 300 cfs, and lower, for safe and productive wade fishing.

One quick caution: With rain coming this week, stay away from the Big Wood River where the steepest slopes are. We had avalanches cross the river in several places last week. No matter where you choose to fish this week, be safe and have fun doing it!

t is not my nature to pussyfoot around (or puppyfoot, as the case may be) any topic. This has long been a disturbing topic for me and I hope that I can meaningfully describe why in the paragraphs below.

I am among all those who live here that love taking my dogs in the woods and mountains to run free and play in the meadows of wildflowers and clear, cold rivers. As a dog-loving photographer, there are no better photo ops for me than to capture those joyful moments so I can enjoy them over and over, as well as share them with my dog-loving friends.

Letting your dog run free in appropriate, safe places is nothing short of a blessing we have here in this community. The problem comes when freedom becomes an every-day, every-moment relationship between owner and dog.

Dogs will behave as dogs— descendants of wolves—when left to their own devices without structure and rules. Dogs are not humans, with the capability to discern when something is socially appropriate or not. Their “dog society” relates to everything entirely differently than we do. While we admire and enjoy dog societies, we also have to understand they are not humans and cannot process things as we do. This is one reason anthropomorphism can be so deadly to a dog’s mental health, and many times we won’t see it until something dramatic happens, such as a dog bite or horrible dog fight.

ronmental, we can highly influence dog genetic behaviors with proper training and fair leadership. When we allow dogs to be “free” and handle life as they want to, we may very likely end up with a dog that reverts to primal ancestral behaviors that include territorial and possessive behaviors, dominance aggression, resource guarding (such as bones or even your vehicle), and the loss of bite inhibition.

Dog decisions and our human society can come to a screaming collision. And, at that point, the dog-owning relationship may be-

come not only dangerous to other dogs and humans, it can also become a legal liability.

It’s sort of like driving a car.

When we are out driving on public roads, it is safe to obey the traffic signs and be thoughtful of others. Then, if we want to drive off-road, we buy the proper vehicle or we head to a racetrack.

Even then, we have to learn how to drive in those situations in order to enjoy it and be safe.

The thing that makes dogs and wolves different is their ability to learn, or what is called biddability. In order to honor our dogs and

who they are, we must train dogs to behave in a human-society-acceptable manner. Then they are a joy to live with and for others to be around.

n January, I wrote an article about the shapes that are created during snowstorms. Since the snow has persevered at a prodigious rate, I decided to continue drawing my weeping birch tree, which I portrayed in the first article. Along with the local landscape, the tree has become buried in feet

of snow. Most of the branches are well below the surface, but a few bedraggled souls continue to peek out. Amazingly, a few stubborn autumn leaves still cling to the very tips of the branches. In January, the birch, defying winter, showed a bit of bounce. With more and more snow, the limbs of the tree have drooped over alarmingly. What a winter we are having!

Raise the Minimum Wage

Despite a 2013 study by United Way, which found the living wage for an Idaho adult to cover the basics is $8.33 per hour, there are approximately 20,000 Idahoans making the $7.25 minimum wage. As of Jan. 1, 2017, 29 states, plus Washington, D.C., have a minimum wage higher than the federal minimum wage.

Idaho legislators have an opportunity to pass House Bill 72. Introduced by Rep. Matt Erpelding and co-sponsored by six senators and ten representatives, HB72 aims to increase the minimum wage over the course of three years. By July 1, 2019, the minimum wage would be $12 per hour and $7.35 per hour for tipped employees.

For a family of four, the living wage to cover only the basics is $23.09 per hour. With the passage of HB72, two adults earning the proposed $12 per hour would be able to earn just enough to cover the cost of living. In the same study, it was found that about 22 percent of Idaho households make more than the federal poverty level but still not enough to cover the basic cost of living. These same Idahoans also often fall into the health insurance gap.

The Legislature passed a law last year that bans local communities from raising their own minimum wages. Our legislators have the power and responsibility to help those Idahoans who have been left behind. By contacting your legislators, you can let them know that you support this piece of legislation that will make Idaho families stronger.

Idaho Should Raise Minimum Wage

As an Idahoan, it is my duty to hold our politicians accountable for their votes that affect working Idaho families. Anyone with a job knows $7.25 per hour is not enough to live off of or support a family.

According to UC Berkeley, as of January 19, 2017, 41 counties and cities around the U.S. have minimum wage ordinances. Before 2012, there were only 5 locations in the U.S. with similar ordinances.

The push for better pay is not unreasonable. Wages have not kept up with inflation and the cost of living. According to the White House, the minimum wage has increased 22 times since its adoption in 1938. An increase to $9 per hour would restore the real value of the minimum wage to the levels of 1981, back to the beginning of the Reagan Administration.

House Minority Leader Matt Erpelding has introduced House Bill 72, with Senator Michelle Stennett and Representative Sally Toone co-sponsoring, to transition our pay grade from levels held back decades ago to levels that reflect more recent economic standards. The bill is co-sponsored by six senators and 10 representatives and it aims to gradually increase the minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $12 per hour by July 1, 2019.

Our legislators are the only ones able to act upon this law. Last year, the Legislature took away a local community’s ability to set its own minimum wage. Working Idahoans and their families deserve better. Please encourage Representative Steve Miller to support raising Idaho’s minimum wage.

DIFFICULTIES FACING GARDENERS IN THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY

ardening in the Wood River Valley can be tricky and requires basic knowledge and care. Careful attention needs to be given to cold-season versus warm-season crops, and to what grows well locally, considering our high elevation and short gardening season.

The Wood River Valley is a high desert. Summer days are generally sunny, warm/hot and dry. As the sun sets, the temperature falls and nights are much cooler than days. The risk of frost at night reduces our growing season to a 60-day short season.

The wind, which is a drying and cooling factor, blows predominantly from the west, is often from the south in the daytime and from the north at night. Adding to the list of difficulties, the soil in Blaine County is generally alkaline, dry, compact, clayish and poor in organic matter, unless your growing bed is next to the river.

Our climate is more suited to cold-season plants than to warm-season plants, although local gardeners do grow both.

The wise gardener selects the right vegetable varieties that are well adapted to our climate and mature in fewer days, and learns to start seedlings indoors and transplant outdoors when temperatures are warm enough. Once outdoors, plants will be happier if protected at the begin-

ning and at the end of the growing season, using “season extension” practices and devices. During the growing season, protection may also be required against hail, scorching sun, insect infestation as well as four-legged creatures wanting to share your lunch!

Are you ready to give it a try? Get a soil thermometer, learn about how to work, amend and mulch your soil, study and create microclimates suitable for the various plant families, take notes in your gardening journal, ask for advice from other gardeners, and enjoy learning from experience.

urner Maza, a senior and three-sport athlete at Wood River High School, recently made the move to the Wood River Valley from the beaches of Southern California.

Born and raised in Huntington Beach, Maza moved to Idaho with his mother last year. Making the move from a city of half a million people to the Valley prompted some adjustments.

“One thing about Huntington Beach is that it’s always sunny and never gets below about 50 degrees,” Maza said. “The worst day will be a little overcast and

windy.

“It was a great place to grow up. You learn how to get along with other people and to communicate with them, although they are not as friendly as they are here.”

Part of that life was spent on the beach by the ocean.

“I loved to surf with my dad for bonding. I also love the texture of sand and its warmness, and the ocean breeze.”

Maza started surfing at 5 years old when he got a longboard from his father.

“My dad got me an actual board when I was 7,” Turner said.

“There’s nothing like surfing.

When he moved to Idaho, all Maza could think about was potatoes.

“In some ways it was a lot like Orange County because of all the affluent people. But it’s very cold here and living in snow is pretty different and the change of seasons is crazy. People are also so friendly. Everywhere you go you see someone and it sparks a conversation.

“The only downside, I suppose, is that there aren’t a lot of things to do on a weekend and everyone knows what you are up to. If I had to choose, I would say that I prefer the beach because I’m closer to my dad at the ocean, but I really enjoy it here, and Wood River has a great bunch of kids. I couldn’t be happier.”

Maza is also passionate about sports, and at Wood River he plays lacrosse, football and basketball.

“I love competition and working for something and then achieving it. There is no way to explain how good it feels to win a game—giving it your all in practice and the game, and then

“I like team sports more because you can connect with a bunch of people and you all can meet a goal. I enjoy the challenge and it’s a lot more rewarding than just being by yourself.”

In fact, Maza’s favorite sport is lacrosse.

“I started playing my sophomore year when a friend persuaded me to come out and I fell in love with the sport. It’s all about the skills it takes and the physical aspect of hitting people and the aspect of team bonding.

It’s a special experience.” tws

‘MOTHERS AND SONS’ nexStage’s newest drama

A

band, known as International Guitar Night—Lucca Stricagnoli from Varese, Italy, Chystian Dozza from Brazil, Debashish Bhattacharya from Kolkata, India, and Lulo Reinhardt, a Gypsy from Belgium and the grandnephew of Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt—visited Silver Creek High School in Hailey, Monday, Feb. 13.

Presented by the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, the band was in the Valley to play a Valentine’s night concert at the Sun Valley Opera House.

As part of the Center’s educational outreach, the band gave a private concert.

The entire school was amazed by the band’s performance; the musical artists brought tears to the students’ eyes. The students were so in love that they invited the band to check out the school’s new sound studio.

The band was very impressed with the studio and even more impressed with Silver Creek senior Zac McStay’s big project on building a homemade guitar.

McStay decided he wanted to build a guitar last year after noticing his guitar at the time was a little beat up. McStay had an internship last year at Rainy Day Guitar with his mentor, Bozo Cardozo. Together, McStay and Cardozo worked to help McStay build his dream electric guitar.

McStay said building the instrument was not an easy job.

He had to draw the design, pick the type of wood he wanted to use, make measurements, cut out the fretboard, neckpiece body and holes for the body of the guitar, then he had to assemble wires and gadgets together to make it an electric.

Once he had all of his parts, he had to puzzle-piece it all together to make a beautiful, working guitar.

“I’ve been into music my whole life,” McStay says. “I can’t fall asleep without it. I started playing guitar a long time ago, then quit, and I feel like this project was a good reason for me to start playing again.”

McStay’s homemade guitar turned out incredible and he has really impressed everyone tws with his success.

nexStage Theatre will present “Mothers and Sons” by award-winning playwright Terence McNally, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17-19 and 22-25. Nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 2014, the drama revolves around a woman who pays an unexpected visit to the apartment of her late son’s partner.

“Mothers and Sons” is a timely, provocative and humorous play that explores the evolving understanding of family and change in today’s world. Directed by Bruce A. Hostetler, the play stars Patsy Wygle as Katherine Gerard, Nicholas Garcia as Cal Porter, Richard Lindenfelzer as Will Ogden, and Will Lamoureux and Cooper Salvoni, both playing Bud Ogden-Porter, in rotation.

“Katherine is an unhappy woman and always has been,” Wygle said. “She looked to her son, Andre, to change that for her, and he didn’t. When she lost Andre, she kind of froze in time for 20 years and didn’t face it or change anything. In a time where things are changing so rapidly, it can be hard to keep up.”

Boise guest artist Garcia will make his nexStage debut as Cal. Garcia has worked extensively with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Boise Contemporary Theater, Alley Repertory Theater and The Empty Boat Theatre Company, which he founded with Hollis Welsh. Garcia is also featured in this year’s One Potato short-script competition winner, “See Yourself Out,” which will have its world premiere at the 2017 Sun Valley Film Festival.

“Cal is a man who lived through the AIDS crisis in the ’90s,” Garcia said. “He’s someone who has silently suffered

and who has lost a loved one to the tragedy that AIDS was. To me, this character represents the changing times. He has changed and the world has changed, but this woman (Katherine) has not changed.”

New York City-based actor Lindenfelzer will make his Idaho debut in this production. His recent credits include “Cabaret” and “First Date” with Lake Dillon Theatre Company. He also was seen recently in national tours of “Anything Goes” (Evelyn) and “Les Misérables” (Bishop).

“Will is part of the first generation where being gay isn’t a terrible tragedy,” Lindenfelzer said. “He’s not dying of AIDS, he can marry, he has never known a life besides one in which he has most of the same

liberties that all his contemporaries have. In the play, that gives him the rosiest glasses of all the characters, and that can annoy others because Will hasn’t suffered.”

“This play will make you laugh, think and feel,” Wygle concluded. “We have never been so polarized in this country, at least since I’ve been alive. There is so much hate. The whole idea of some sort of empathy, some coming together or understanding, is what makes this play important.”

ERC to host Gallery Walk exhibit on the story of snow in Sun Valley The Environmental Resource Center will be open during Ketchum’s Gallery Walk, 5-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 to display an exhibit about the local snowpack and skiing history, and the impact of a changing snowpack on local wildlife.

The exhibit highlights the current threats snowshoe hares, Clark’s nutcrackers, wolverines and sockeye salmon face due to a changing snowpack. It will also feature local, historical snowpack photographs, provided by The Community Library’s Regional History Department, and information on the history of snow in the Wood River Valley.

Fly Sun Valley Alliance seeks renewal of LOT A 1 percent local option tax passed by voters in Ketchum, Hailey and Sun Valley in 2012 and 2013 generated about $2.5 million, about half of which went to Fly Sun Valley Alliance. The group pays for flight contracts with United and Alaska Airlines, as well as marketing campaigns in major cities.

Now, Fly Sun Valley Alliance would like to get a measure on the May ballot to approve a renewal of the LOT. If the renewal goes through, the local option tax would be added to the state’s sales tax in Blaine County.

Since the tax took effect in 2013, flights to Denver, San Francisco and Portland were added. And the number of people flying in and out of Friedman Memorial Airport increased by 53 percent. City councils and voters will have a chance to weigh in during city council meetings Tuesday, Feb. 21.

WOOD RIVER EXTREME SKIJORING RACES SAT FEB 18-SUN FEB 19 NOON / QUIGLEY RANCH / HAILEY Fast horses and brave skiers combine for a weekend of skijoring excitement in Hailey.

Skijoring is a sport that involves a skier being pulled by something, be it dogs, a snowmobile, etc. In the Wood River Valley, and other Western communities, horses are used. A successful run of this race means crossing the finish line of the 600- to 900-foot course with the skier having executed one to three jumps ranging from 3-6 feet high, and grabbing from three to nine rings. Points are deducted for missed or dropped rings and missed jumps. Winners are based on the combined overall score for both days.

The Wood River Extreme Skijoring Association’s annual races will take place at Quigley Ranch in Hailey on Saturday, Feb. 18, and Sunday, Feb. 19, starting at noon each day. This family-friendly weekend event will also feature food booths, music, an auction and a dance. There is a gate fee of $5 per spectator; children 10 and under can enter for free. No dogs allowed.
