TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE OF DESTINY
F
BY DANA DUGAN
irst, one says yes. Then, one looks for the perfect location. Choices are innumerable these days. Once upon a time, couples announced their engagement and simply headed back to their hometown church. They let the folks plan the whole shindig, asked their kindergarten best friends to stand up with them, and then invited the whole town. But for a while now, forgoing all the obligatory showers, bachelor parties and embarrassing moments in front of Aunt Opal, couples are opting for something quite different. This may be because young Americans are peripatetic, moving from hometown to college towns to new cities for rising careers. They make their homes elsewhere. After all, where is home, anyway? With career-oriented couples marrying a tad later in life—in their 30s rather than their 20s—this means home is where the heart is. In other words, anywhere the soul takes one. Or, couples head to neutral ground, preferably some jaw-dropping locale that will enthrall every last guest and family member. Beach destination weddings are always popular but not necessarily a good fit for everyone. The same thing might be said of a sophisticated city wedding, or an isolated mountain wedding. On the other hand, resort weddings have something for everyone. There are two ways to look at hosting (or attending) a destina-
tion wedding: firstly, it takes the stress out of the huge, hometown church do. Leaving behind the minutiae of everyday life means guests and family all are able to spend quality time together with the wedding couple. Let’s call it the getting-to-know-you phase. By the time the reception is over, after a long weekend of festivities, everyone has become a lifelong buddy. Secondly, it’s just plain fun to be in this crazy adventure together with loving people. A romantic vacation at a resort has it all, including recreation, culinary delights, spas, anonymity (yes, it does bring out the wild!), and entertainment. And, it can be a lovely, more informal vacation for everyone involved. Couples are also aware that their guests will most likely have to reach deeper into their pockets more than they would for traditional nuptials back home. The guest list will shrink, since not everyone will be able to attend, thus making things slightly more informal and gift-giving more relaxed. When a couple actually lives in that destination such as the Sun Valley area, it brings it all together; the hometown familiarity along with the exoticness of a new locale. The Wood River Valley is probably better known for skiing and fishing than weddings, but with more than 250 days of sunshine annually, a wide range of places to stay, and lots of activities in the area, it makes for a solid pick as a destination wedding site, too. tws

2017 Wedding Dress Trends BY YANNA LANTZ

ridal Fashion Week and 2016 celebrity red-carpet looks have inspired many of 2017’s wedding dress trends. Although many traditional white ball gowns were seen, several other styles have been featured from multiple designers as the hot looks for this year’s brides. This season, capes are having their moment in the spotlight. “Equal parts modest and glamorous—that’s the power of the cape,” says Popsugar’s Hannah Weil McKinley. Drawing inspiration from the resurgence of superheroes and streetwear, the cape instantly adds a bit of drama and practicality to a gown. From Lela Rose’s adorable collared, button-down top, to Naeem Khan’s lace-trimmed, high-low poncho, to many long, billowing cloaktrains, capes were a strong force on the 2017 runway. The off-the-shoulder silhouette made a powerful comeback this year in the collections of Oscar de la Renta, Naeem Khan and Sachin & Babi, giving gowns an air of laid-back glamour and a new way to tastefully show a little skin. “Spring 2017 wedding dresses officially ushered in the age of the off-the-shoulder,” says Roberta Correia from Brides. From the red carpet to the bridal runway, plunging necklines have always been popular. This revealing neckline took multiple sexy forms this season, through the deep V’s looks and the less severe scalloped slits. Conversely, high necklines are also an emerging trend for the season. Ultra-elegant and regal, a high neckline is perfect for the bride who wants a timeless look. Designers Carolina Herrera, Julie Vino, Romona Keveza and Vera Wang all presented stunning dresses in this category. Although some of the high-neck wedding dresses were modest, quite a few included skin-baring elements, from sheer details to cutouts. “High-neck wedding gowns were definitely a trend, but these aren’t your grandmother’s high-

necked gowns,” says Wedding Wire’s Julie Vino. Similar to 2016, illusion bodices dominated the catwalk at Fashion Week. Designers such as Francesca Miranda and Mira Zwillinger pushed the envelope with full-on illusion bodices. With sexy sheer-tops featuring lace appliqués (in just the right places) and tightly woven lace bodices with layers of nude lining, these dresses are intriguing and romantic. “Somehow, designers devised a way for brides to wear all of the traditional wedding accoutrements (long sleeves, a train, the veil, etc.) and still bare as much skin as J. Lo at the 2000 Grammys,” says Fawnia Soo Hoo from Fashionista. Not unexpectedly, feathers played a big role in many of the industry’s newest collec-
tions. Feathers found their way into the collections of industry heavy-hitters like Lela Rose, Jenny Packham, Carolina Herrera and Marchesa, in the form of fluttery skirts, bodices with Old World flair and short, sassy, reception-ready dresses. At the end of the day, however, a bride’s perfect dress comes down to how a bride wants to feel on her special day. “Do you want to look sexy, understated, modern, chic, traditional… or perhaps you want your dress to have a more vintage feeling,” asks Randy Fenoli in his book, “It’s All About the Dress.” “Once you find your story, I promise you will find your dress.” tws
