Through the generosity of drivers, donors, volunteers and attendees, Sun Valley Tour de Force has funded two schools of fifth-grade classes to attend Outdoor Adventure Camp with Idaho BaseCamp this fall. Students and teacher chaperones from both Bellevue Elementary and Mackay School will enjoy a three-day, two-night campout filled with outdoor adventure education, free of charge, at Idaho BaseCamp’s headquarters 45 minutes outside of Sun Valley.

“Some of the children have never been camping before,” said Alexis Duvall, who teaches fifth grade at Bellevue Elementary with Andrea Gallegos, “We’re hoping this will introduce them to that aspect of life and that it will encourage them to continue to take advantage of what our area has to offer,” Gallegos said.

Sage-Grouse Habitat Plans Will Be Modified Last week, the USDA Forest Service announced the release of a Draft Environmental Impact Statement with proposed amendments to Forest Service land management plans for greater sage-grouse. The affected plans occur within five Western states: Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming and Utah. The purpose of the proposed changes is to improve the clarity, efficiency and implementation of the current greater sagegrouse plans, including promoting landscape-scale alignment with state efforts.

Greater sage-grouse populations have been impacted by a variety of threats, including the loss of habitat from wildfire and the spread of invasive weeds like cheatgrass.

The USDA Forest Service, along with the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management, amended land management plans in 2015 to address threats and to improve habitat conservation for greater sage-grouse. Agency actions in 2015 helped to prevent greater sage-grouse from being listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, but in the three years since the plans were originally implemented, new science and management details have emerged.

Idaho Earns Top Marks In Annual SKI Magazine Poll SKI magazine rated Sun Valley first in Western North America for charm and lift service last week in its annual “Resorts of the Year” issue for 2019 and third place for “overall satisfaction” among readers. However, Sun Valley, which SKI describes as “the birthplace of the modern ski vacation, having installed the first chairlifts in the world in 1936,” wasn’t the only Idaho resort earning high praise from the magazine.

Overall, it gave five of Ski Idaho’s 18 resorts big nods.

Although across the border, in Alta, Wyo., Grand Targhee, which affiliates with the Idaho Ski Areas Association because the resort is only accessible via Driggs, Idaho, earned first place in the West for snow plus props for affordability. It also garnered fifth place among Western resorts for “overall satisfaction” among SKI magazine readers.

Meanwhile, Brundage Mountain in McCall earned an Editor’s Choice – Next Best Places award for up-and-coming areas.

The report also named Bogus Basin in Boise and Schweitzer Mountain in Sandpoint among resorts of the year for Montana, Idaho and Wyoming. Schweitzer was called “an up-and-coming, four-season resort” whose “views of sparkling Lake Pend Oreille give the Tahoe areas a reason to be nervous.”

Health Insurance Plans Increase But Much Less Than In Past

ndrés Caballero, a journalist and filmmaker, brought his film, “Gaucho del Norte,” to the Sun Valley Film Festival earlier this year, but to have it be shown during the Trailing of the Sheep Festival is even more rewarding.

“I wanted to do a documentary about immigration that was different from most we were seeing, which were important, but it was a time when people seemed numb and lethargic about immigration reform,” Caballero said.

“I happened to be translating for the immigration interview of a Chilean sheepherder and his now American wife. He told me he was a sheepherder and I was immediately intrigued. I had no idea this primitive lifestyle still existed and that the workers who were keeping the industry alive were specifically recruited from Latin America.”

The documentary, co-directed

by Sofian Khan, follows Eraldo Pacheco, a thoughtful Chilean who leaves home to work 6,000 miles away in rural Idaho. The documentary addresses the imbalance in the hardship of Pacheco’s choices with Idaho’s impressive natural beauty and painterly cinematic images. Both filmmakers will be at the screening, as will Robert and Blake Ball, sheep ranchers from Hamer, Idaho.

It’s all in the synergy. Sheepherders who take contracts at U.S. ranches must work in far-off locations for at least three years, Caballero said. They do this for the money, which exceeds anything they could accumulate at home. When they return to their home countries, they hope to invest it for their families.

In the meantime, the “U.S. sheep industry is also highly dependent on their skills and willingness to work for the offered wage in order to continue their businesses,” Caballero said.

tary was interesting for the New York City-based filmmakers.

“There were moments when we would get a glimpse of how difficult sheepherding can be,” Caballero said. “It’s a romantic, but also dark and lonely, environment. We parachuted in and out during our handful-plus of shoots, but our main characters were constantly there, roughing it and missing their families.

“On one of our first nights inside a small trailer in the middle of the desert near the Teton Mountains during the winter, three of us among the crew would take turns to keep the fire going in the middle of the night,” Caballero continued. “It was below freezing outside. In the middle of

the night we woke up to the trailer full of smoke and little visibility. The chimney was clogged up with ice and the windows or door wouldn’t open. There was a brief moment of panic, but the door finally opened and we immediately fled for oxygen. The sheepherder was laughing at us the next morning.”

The documentary will screen during the Sheep Tales Gathering, 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12.

Also screening at the ticketed evening will be the short documentary, “Sheepherders with Cell Phones,” with filmmaker Carolyn Dufurrena. For more information and the link to tickets, visit trailingofthesheep.org.

Final 2019 premium rates for individual and small group health insurance plans were released by the Idaho Department of Insurance. In the individual market, plans will increase by an average of 5 percent, a significant reversal in the double-digit rate increases Idahoans have faced the past three years, and a figure slightly lower than the 8 percent increase proposed by health carriers this past spring.

The final 2019 rate adjustments and justifications for each carrier are published and can be viewed at doi.idaho.gov/consumer/RateReview. Increases for bronze and silver plans remain the lowest, while rates for catastrophic plans will be the highest.

Open enrollment for 2019 will begin Thursday, Nov. 1, and those seeking coverage can visit the state’s insurance exchange, Your Health Idaho, at yourhealthidaho.org. Four carriers will offer a total of 293 plans, including three carriers providing coverage statewide. Some consumers utilizing Your Health Idaho may be eligible for assistance covering premiums, out-of-pocket costs and deductibles.

KETCHUM HARVEST FESTIVAL CELEBRATES FALL

aking the most out of the season, the Ketchum Harvest Festival will take place at Ketchum’s Forest Service Park, from 1-6 p.m., Friday, Oct 12, coinciding with the weekend-long celebration of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival.

Kelly Eisenbarger, manager of the Wood River Farmers’ Markets, will present the inaugural event as a way to bring local farmers’ foods to the people, even though the weekly markets are over for the season.

“After seeing how many farmers still have produce at the end of market season, I wanted an opportunity to have a big end-of-season party,” Eisenbarger said.

With the influx of people for the annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival, Eisenbarger found a location that could benefit from the weekend’s event without detracting from it. Eisenbarger has a decade of experience putting on events from her work in Austin, Texas, with the South by Southwest festival, weddings, and general event planning.

A resident of Hailey for the past two years, Eisenbarger has experienced many facets of the Valley from working at The Center, the Wood River Community YMCA, on Baldy and, most recent-

ly, in education at Sun Valley Community School.

While there have been several iterations of harvest festivals in the Valley—two previous, and now defunct, Sun Valley Harvest Festivals, and the current Wood River Valley Harvest Festival—this festival will focus more on supporting the artisans and farmers whose livelihoods depend on great customer relations nurtured through events like these.

“This is its first year, so we’ll have to see if the farmers think it’s worth it,” Eisenbarger said. “It’s important to support these local businesses that don’t have the ability for a brick-and-mortar shop but need the ability to sell handmade or handgrown foods.”

The Harvest Festival will have farmers selling fall crops like squashes and pumpkins.

In addition to the bounty of fresh foods and local goods, the event will feature live music by The Beverly Lovers, hand-pressed apple cider along with fall games such as corn-shucking and apple-stacking contests. The winner of a harvest basket raffle benefiting The Hunger Coalition will get something from each vendor as well as two tickets to the Company of Fools’ holiday performance of “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane,” to be staged in December. tws

Idaho Conservation Groups Issue Harsh Rebuke Of Gov. Otter

Idaho conservation groups issued a harsh rebuke to Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter Tuesday after the governor committed the state to four more years of support for failed federal salmon policies.

“Otter is the architect of do-nothing salmon policy that commits Idaho to a failed federal approach,” said Brian Brooks, executive director of the Idaho Wildlife Federation, a coalition of sportsmen. “Idaho’s salmon and steelhead are in dire straits right now, in danger of extinction... It’s time for Idaho solutions that bring Idaho fish back.”

In 2008 Idaho signed a 10-year Accord with the Bonneville Power Administration.

In exchange for access to federal funds that would be used for fisheries projects, Idaho agreed to support federal plans to recover populations of steelhead, sockeye and chinook salmon that were listed under the Endangered Species Act in the 1990s.

However, the situation has gotten worse, said Marie Callaway Kellner, water associate for the Idaho Conservation League. “For the past three years, in fact, returns have been declining steeply. Wild steelhead in particular have made a hard turn toward extinction. The sockeye of Redfish Lake remain at high risk, with only 13 wild adults returning in 2018.”

f you’ve seen a pack of women on rollerblades, potentially dressed in 1980s neon, rollerblading down the bike path together, it’s likely that you’ve spotted the Sun Valley Bladies. This is a group of about eight women, roughly between the ages of 20 and 55, who simply want to get out and have a good time.

The Bladies meet at 5:30 p.m. every Thursday at rotating locales in order to cater to all members. Amanda Porino, founder of the local group, got the idea from her friend, who does something similar.

“My girlfriend in Park City would talk about it,” Porino said, “and it sounded goofy and fun to me, so I started a group here with another friend.”

The Bladies is a noncompetitive group; however, they take their Thursday night soundtracks and themes very seriously. Imagine dressing up in ’80s neon knee-high socks, disco getup and blading away to “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls. That’s a pretty accurate snapshot of this group.

“We typically start at a bar and end at a bar,” Porino said. “One route we did started at The Valley Club in mid-Valley and ended at the Power House pub and restaurant in Hailey.”

Porino, who has been athletic her whole life, says it’s also a great workout.

“I’ve competed in athletics my entire life, yet I wake up sore from rollerblading,” she said.

The group is beginner and stroller friendly, and considers their activity simply a fun outing.

“I have a three-year-old son named Beau,” Porino said, “and my husband travels for work, so sometimes I’m strollerblading with Beau, too.”

Lululemon, a women’s athletic clothing line with a store in Ketchum, currently sponsors the group. The company supports active women who also make a point of having fun. Sun Valley Bladies can be found on Instagram @sunvalleybladies and Facebook.

Artists To Celebrate In The South Wood River Valley

Bellevue Artist Alliance strives to support art in the south Wood River Valley by connecting artists and the community through art, business partnerships, exhibits, and events in Bellevue.

Artists’ studios will be open are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20 and 21.

An opening reception with the artists will be held Friday, Oct. 19 at Silver Creek Hotel, 721 N. Main Street in Bellevue. This event is free and open to the public. The community of artists has grown to nearly 30 Bellevue area artist members in BAA with dozens of artists participating in the Open Studio event each year.

“Bellevue Artist Alliance succeeds because you have the synergy of creative folks working to enhance the experience of art in our community,” said Anne Jeffery, a Bellevue artist and BAA organizer.

NEW ART EVENT TO ADD COLOR TO PARADE DAY

new event has been added to the 22nd Annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival this weekend. The Art Show will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, in Town Square in Ketchum.

This is one of the 30 events planned for the festival this year.

The festival will host about 11 local vendors, including Blue Savannah, Dancing Goddess, Desert Garden Farms, Feathergrass Fiber, Lark’s Meadow Farm, Magic of the Zapotec Hand, Nat and Yarn, Sheepish Designs, SpringSong Farm and Wandering Pines Alpacas. Each will showcase their unique products and designs.

Dianne Wright, of Wandering Pines Ranch, in Weiser, will join the sheep festival for her fifth time.

“I fell in love with the wonderful festival,” Wright said. “It got me interested in different types of sheep and wool.”

Wright raises alpacas and harvests the fleece. Ninety-five percent of the work is done by hand, including cleaning and dyeing. She sells the yarn and fiber and makes items like fingerless gloves, hats and scarves.

Included in this last day of the celebration are food and music leading up the sheep parade down Main Street. In the past, this event was held on Irving’s Hill in Ketchum. The relocation to Town Square means there is more room for food trucks and entertainment, including catering by the Wood River Sustainability Center food truck, specialty cocktails, and music provided by Cindy and Gary Braun and Gator Nation in partnership with Sun Valley Jazz and Music Festival.

“We took a festival we had and spiced it up a bit,” said Laura Musbach Drake, Trailing of the Sheep Festival executive director.

Drake hopes the addition of sheep art and the relocation entices more people to join the end of this wonderful celebration before and after the big woolly parade.

“The sheep parade is an authentic band of sheep making their way south down Main Street, so everyone can celebrate,” Drake said. tws

he 22nd annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival starts this week and with it comes one of the festival’s staples, the Sheep Folklife Fair.

The free event will feature over 75 vendors, demonstrations by artisans, kids’ craft activities, music, displays of sheep shearing, sheep wagons, and more. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Roberta McKercher Gateway Park in Hailey.

“The fair is a great place to interact with vendors, see cultural performers, enjoy lamb, see demonstrations,” Laura Drake, executive director of the Trailing of the Sheep Festival, said. “The fair was part of the festival from the very beginning and continues to be part of who we are as a festival and organization.”

In addition to sheep-shearing demonstrations, there will also be wool spinning and weaving done by regional and local artisans, music and dancing by traditional performers, and food and beverages. The juried arts and crafts show requires vendors to offer handmade items made of wool, alpaca, wool blends, or items related to sheep, such as soaps and lotions from lanolin, sheep cheeses, or items that augment cooking with lamb.

Ketchum resident Merete Abbott has participated with the folklife fair for the last six years. Under the name of Purls and Shawls MJA (her initials), Abbott sells homemade knitted shawls, ponchos, and mini ponchos. In addition to the folklife fair, Abbott also sells her goods at the annual Ketchum Arts and Crafts Festival and Janet Dunbar’s Artisans Invitational.

For more than six decades, knitting has always been a part of Abbott’s life; she has been knitting since she was 10 years old.

“I started out of necessity because I was the second of four children, so I made a lot of my own clothing,” Abbott said. “If I wanted a new outfit for school, I would knit a new sweater, then go to the fabric shop and buy a little piece of material to make a miniskirt, and then I’d have a new outfit.”

Abbott grew up in Denmark where the practice of hygge—a word used in Danish and Norwegian cultures to describe the mood of coziness and contentment—is often practiced.

Abbott brought the concept of hygge to her home of 25 years in Ketchum. She will often light

a candle, make some tea, put on some soft music, and spend some time knitting.

While Abbott knits quite often for her business now, she spent years of her life as a translator in English, German, Spanish, French and Danish, and knitting in her spare time.

“I’ve always been knitting,” Abbott said. “And now my husband is an airline pilot and he invites me on long trips, so I bring my knitting.”

Abbott appreciates the community of people the Trailing of the Sheep’s Folklife Fair brings together, and the long traditions.

“As an immigrant myself, it’s nice seeing the Basque dancers,” Abbott said. “And making yarn out of wool is a tradition going back hundreds of years.” tws

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation will host its 42nd annual Wild Game Dinner on Friday, Nov. 9, in the Limelight Room of the Sun Valley Inn. A time-honored tradition since 1976, the event that began as a way for ski team families to celebrate the start of the ski season holds true to its roots today.

The dinner is an opportunity for families and friends to reconnect, and to take a moment to reflect on the value and heritage that snow sports hold in this community. Proceeds from the event support local SVSEF athletes and enable any child wishing to participate in snow sports to do so. ITD To Host Public Meeting On Autonomous And Connected Vehicles

The Idaho Transportation Department will host its next public meeting, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, at the ITD District 3 large conference room, 8150 Chinden Blvd., in Boise. Hosted by ITD Director Brian Ness, the meeting is part of Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter’s executive committee focused on the study of autonomous and connected vehicles in Idaho.

The committee is comprised of industry leaders and members from multiple state agencies, including Idaho State Police, Department of Commerce and ITD. The committee’s first report of findings and recommendations will be submitted to the governor’s office no later than November 2018.

Once again I am asking you to support Sally Toone as our District 26 Representative for Blaine, Camas, Gooding and Lincoln counties. My support has nothing to do with whether she is a Republican or a Democrat. It is because Sally relates to the farmer, the businessman, the educational community and, of course, all of them as taxpayers. She also relates to other Idaho decision-makers. Her ability to make rational decisions and communicate with other legislators contributed to a very successful first term as one of our current District 26 Representatives.

Sally is a third-generation educator and has the invaluable experience of a 37-year career as a math teacher in the Wendell and Gooding school districts. This experience allows her to relate to and understand the needs of our most precious asset, our children. Sally also understands the unique challenges of farmers and ranchers. She and her husband Mark, third-generation farmer/rancher, own and operate family farms and cattle ranches in Gooding and Camas counties. Their two sons, along with their families, have returned to Idaho to raise their children and continue the family agricultural business.

As a longtime resident of southern Idaho, Sally understands the different situations that exist in our small rural communities and will work tirelessly with commissioners, school trustees, constituents and fellow legislators to find ways to solve our unique needs. Racing With Muffy

Muffy Davis, Sun Valley’s “Olympic hope,” was practicing racing down Baldy early one morning in 1989 when she caught an edge, skied off the course into the trees, and broke her back. Confined to a wheelchair, she went to Denver, Colo., for three months of physical therapy.

Determined to race again, Muffy hired a coach, a specialist in adaptive skiing, and trained on a monoski designed for paraplegics. Her hard work paid off with Muffy’s bronze medal at the 1998 Paralympics in Nagano, Japan. Other Paralympics and awards followed: Salt Lake City 2002/three silvers; London 2012/ three golds on an adaptive bike.

Life was not all practice and racing. In 2000, Muffy met Jeff Burley, who not only kept her nose to the grindstone but also placed a ring on her finger. They were married in 2004 and welcomed a daughter in 2008. Elle and Jeff are perpetual support to Muffy in every aspect of her life.

And what a life! While working at St. Luke’s in Ketchum and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Muffy was a member of the national “Make-A-Wish” board and co-founder of Sun Valley Adaptive Sports, now Higher Ground. She was the elected “athlete representative” of the United States Ski & Snowboard Team, and served on the United States Olympic Committee Athletes’ Advisory Council board.

Currently, Muffy is an elected member of the International Paralympic Committee’s governing board and serves on the International Olympic Committee’s Legacy & Sustainability Commission, as well as on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics executive board and the United States Olympic Committee’s Paralympic Advisory Committee.

Additionally, she is an appointed member of the Union Cyclists International Paracycling Commission and was just inducted into both the United States Ski & Snowboard Association and the United States Disabled Snow Sports halls of fame.

As of Nov. 6, Muffy is entering a race that will affect all of us: the Democratic candidate for the Idaho State House of Representatives. Her opposition is Republican Steve Miller, a farmer from Gooding.

Muffy’s platform is specific: improvement of quality public school education, expansion of affordable healthcare, specifically Medicaid, and protection of your public lands. The theme of her campaign is “Rolling Forward Together,” which refers to her collaboration with fellow Democrats, Senator Michelle Stennett and Representative Sally Toone, both of whom are up for reelection. Voters can register through Oct. 12.

Those who want to vote early can do so between Oct. 15 and Nov. 2, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Absentee voters can apply for an Absentee Ballot any time through Oct. 26.

My most important message in this letter is that the winner of this election must win the majority of votes from not only Blaine County, but also from Gooding, Lincoln and Camas counties, who share our legislative district. In the past, only 50 percent of the population of these counties has voted, a shameful situation! Only 58.9 percent of Blaine County voters went to the polls! Our chance to have Muffy represent us depends on each of us getting registered and showing up to vote—either absentee or at the polls.

This is a great opportunity to have a hardworking champion working for us, turning her proven skill, intelligence, determination and focus to our benefit. You can’t afford to sit this one out: register and vote!

Say No To Proposed Power Line

People may think that it is too late to influence this transmission line plan being ‘plowed through’ our county, but it is not. Even given the fact that our P&Z and County Commissioners failed to bring up any important issues in the mediation sessions with Idaho Power—at a bare minimum, they should have asked for backup energy generators at all our substations as part of the plan—now is the time for Wood River citizens to speak up.

This is an unprecedented situation in Idaho that a power company would install a line that violated the core tenet of a county’s Comprehensive Plan, over the objections of the county citizens. Our P&Z/ Commissioners don’t realize that they are in a powerful position. Idaho Power still needs to get this through a rate base case with the PUC to make all Idahoans pay for it—if we, as a county, are opposed to this boondoggle $35-50 million spend here, it is hard for them to make the case for this project and that all Idahoans need to pay for undergrounding lines in Ketchum.

Please contact P&Z and tell them to have some spine and say that this doesn’t work for us. It doesn’t provide us true resiliency—we can still freeze to death in our homes when both lines, sited side by side, fail. And did you know that the CEO of Idaho Power, Darrel Anderson, made close to $4 million in compensation in 2017? Up from the former CEO’s pay in 2006 of $437,000. Most IPCo board directors are in the phone book, or easily found online—maybe they need to hear from you directly that this $50 million spend in our county is a waste of all ratepayers’ money: Thomas Carlile, Richard J. Dahl, Annette Elg, Ronal Jibson, Judith Johansen, Dennis Johnson, Christine King, Richard J. Navarro, Robert Tinstman—I found that none of them live under a transmission line, nor even under a smaller distribution line. They are asking something of our county that they do not choose for themselves.

Bedke Endorses Miller ‘Without Reservation’

Dear Editor: I am writing this letter of support of Rep. Steve Miller in his bid to represent District 26 in the Idaho House of Representatives. I have worked closely with Rep. Miller during the past six years, and I am happy to endorse him for re-election.

Rep. Miller currently serves on three committees; namely, the Agricultural Affairs Committee, the Resources & Conservation Committee, and the Appropriations Committee. In these committee assignments Rep. Miller is able to advocate for the important agricultural and natural resources interests of District 26. He has been a strong voice on the Appropriations Committee for increased education funding, working toward continued improvements for Idaho’s students.

Rep. Miller has displayed common sense in dealing with the complex issues that come before him, both in his committee work and in his district. Because he is not afraid to devote himself to learning all he can about an issue, I know Rep. Miller deals with difficult legislative issues from a position of knowledge, prudence, and good judgment. He has worked hard to become a more effective legislator, learning how to work collaboratively with his colleagues. He is conscientious, thoughtful and deliberative, and is clearly dedicated to serving his constituents well.

I encourage you to re-elect Rep. Steve Miller as your Representative from District 26. He has served his constituents, and the State of Idaho, with dedication and distinction, and I fully expect that he will continue to do so in the future. I endorse him without reservation.

Mike McFadyen, Great Addition To Legislature

Mike McFadyen will make a spectacular addition to the Idaho Legislature. During most of his career as a third-generation bridge builder, he became known as the “fixer.” His great talents quickly elevated him to the top of his trade where he was given not only the most challenging new jobs but was called on to fix many projects that had gone bad. He would roll up his sleeves and get the projects finished on time, and generally under budget. He reminds me of Donald Trump.

His reputation did not go unnoticed. Over the years he managed multimillion-dollar projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, The State Department, EPA, U.S. Coast Guard, Shell Oil, and Tesoro Oil, plus many more. My favorite is when he did Magnetic Silencing Facilities for Trident nuclear submarines.

In retirement he is only going faster. He is famous in Camas County for all the projects he designs and builds for the schools, Camas County Sheriff’s Department, and others in the valley. And he never charges them a cent for his skills and time. He also substitute teaches and serves food in the lunch line at the high school, and puts on special classes in his shop for the kids. He gives back in a big way.

The Idaho State Legislature could use a little fixing, and Mike is just the one to do it. Combine his natural talents and his conservative politics, and Idaho will be all the better.

I have come to know and respect this talented man, and even though I am not able to vote for him because of where I live, I encourage you to. So, please vote for Mike McFadyen on Election Day. District 26 and all of Idaho will be happy you did.

COLUMN NO BONES ABOUT IT THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR OCTOBER 10 - 16, FROM PICABO ANGLER

old mornings and evenings are slowly narrowing the days’ fishing windows. The browns are going to start spawning, making most of the night fishing slower. So this means sleep in and then get up and attack those rivers while the sun shines! We still have a few weeks left of decent hatches and some intense action on the surface.

The mornings on Silver Creek have officially turned frosty.

This means a lot fewer grasshoppers are out and about, and a lot fewer terrestrials, in general.

This doesn’t mean to stop fishing them! A well-presented Hopper on a slightly warmer afternoon is still going to bring up a few fish.

In the meantime, Fall Baetis and Mahogany Duns are the name of the game. Late afternoons into the darkness is October Caddis time. This bug brings up a lot of nice fish and is large and easy to see. If you see brown trout redds (spawning beds where the gravel is swept clean), please avoid stepping in these areas, as it will kill the trout offspring.

The Big Wood River remains one of the Valley’s best fisheries this fall. The dry-fly action may be getting shorter and shorter, but fishing in general is great.

Dries, nymphs and streamers will all take fish right now.

Concentrate your dry-fly search on the tailouts and glides of the pools. Move slowly and try to pick off fish the way you would approach them on Silver Creek.

Finer tippets and longer leaders may be necessary if the fish are on Baetis. If the fish just won’t come up, then start searching with streamers and nymph rigs.

The Lower Lost remains a great place to catch a big fish right now. Not a lot of numbers, necessarily, but the big rainbows are on the bite. Micro-Nymphing this river right now is your best bet. Fish small Midge patterns and Baetis Nymphs. Have some color red in there somewhere and fish tandems under a strike indicator.

The Upper Lost is a beautiful place to fish right now, although the water is cold and the fish are on the move, heading toward winter holding water. The flip side is, the South Fork of the Boise remains a great place to fish hatches and Hoppers! The Baetis in the afternoon will keep anglers entertained. If you can go on a weekday, you’ll see a lot fewer anglers!

FAKE SERVICE DOGS

ight now, I have a lovely black German shepherd guide dog that I trained for a blind woman four years ago. The dog is back to me for help in stopping her from barking at other dogs.

Why does she bark at other dogs? She was attacked by a pit bull in a grocery store about a year ago and now her blind owner can’t use her anymore. This isn’t a comment about pit bulls; it’s a tragic tale of how a fake service dog can destroy another fully trained service dog in the flash of a second.

Each dog was standing in two separate grocery store checkout lines when the pit bull lunged at Onyx (the dog I am working with) and pinned her to the ground while her blind owner stood stunned and not knowing how to cope.

If this other dog had been screened carefully, and trained properly, there would have been no issues between it and the dog I am working with. I can say with utmost confidence that this dog was a pet someone put a vest on and pranced around as a service dog so they could take it into the grocery store on a hot Reno day.

A fully trained dog with proper service-dog temperament would never have acted in such a manner.

The guide-dog skills Onyx has are remarkable. I took her out of my van for our first training together in four years. I said “left,” and she immediately turned left, away from the van, and then stopped at the street behind the van. She looked both ways, and then guided me across the street through a double row of parked cars. Then she stopped me at another street, going the opposite direction.

She looked both ways and proceeded across that street through more parked cars to the curb, where she indicated the curb to step up on so I wouldn’t trip. Her skills are astonishing and accurate. Anyone could walk behind this dog with their eyes blindfolded.

Onyx guided me through the Ketchum Farmers’ Market, never taking me too close to

any table. She didn’t sniff the food, or look for food on the ground, even when I had her stop.

She walked around kids, coolers on the ground, people standing, while guiding me safely.

Then a sweet little mixed breed on a leash appeared and Onyx barked and shook uncontrollably. I tried to refocus her, with no luck.

Eventually, she calmed down and was able to pass three other dogs without incident, but I was careful not to take her too close to them.

She could see them, however.

Yesterday, we went into PetSmart. At the first dog, Onyx barked and tried to jump on me, desperately asking me for help and to remove her. I didn’t ask her to guide anymore, and gave her lots of praise for focusing on me and ignoring the other dogs. We left as quickly as I could.

The staff noticed how nervous Onyx was and came to talk to me. I told them what had happened to her and they were so lovely by asking a few of the other dog owners to wait for us to leave the store instead of walking by.

The work to get Onyx through this fear will be enormous and, frankly, I am not sure I can change her mind about other dogs while she is in harness, working. She gets along fine with my dogs when not working.

I wanted to share this story with everyone, especially those that think faking a service dog harms no one. It is devastating to someone whose dog has been through 300 to 400 hours of training and relies on his or her service dog for life-saving independence. For Onyx’s owner, it may be a huge financial and emotional loss.

Shame on anyone who thinks faking their pet or poorly trained dog as a service dog hurts no one.

It is an autumn day and I am walking amongst the brilliantly lit aspen trees. I am seeing that, indeed, there have been “gusty thieves” aplenty, because many of the trees that just a couple of days ago were resplendent with their autumn finery are now bare, the branches revealing themselves against

the sky.

Nestled in the fork of two branches in a bare aspen I spy a nest that was once concealed amongst the foliage. I peer into the cavity to see what materials were used to make the delicate home. I see many twigs interwoven together—the larger ones used on the outside, the smaller ones reserved for the inside. Soft leftover seed heads, probably from last autumn, line the bottom, along with a fair amount of mud. Interwoven with the twigs are dried blades of grass.

Emily Brontë wrote, “Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.”

A breeze picks up and the leaves drift down.

The sun glints through them and it appears as if golden rain were falling. This is a vision

of peace and resignation at the same time.

The hillsides are lit up, the brilliant yellows surrounded by the deep greens of the pines. I am aware the gold will soon be gone.

The tall dry grass is whispering to me, swaying with a gust of air. More leaves surrender to the inevitable coming of winter. An October day is like a beautiful dream, so real when we are in the midst of it, but all too brief. The “Book of Nature” is getting short of leaves.

on’t be frightened by candy temptation.

There are ways to ease the damage Halloween can do to your diet, from when you buy your candy to how you portion it out. Just try some of these secrets to pick healthy candy, cut your cravings for sweets and bounce back from a candy binge.

Buy candy the day before Halloween. If you’re stocking up for trick-or-treaters, minimize the number of days the candy is in your house beforehand. Research shows just looking at food triggers the circuitry in our brains that makes us imagine eating it. If you’ve already bought candy, keep it out of sight in the back of your pantry until your doorbell starts ringing.

Take the three-minute test. About to bite into that Reese’s? A study in the journal Appetite found that the mood-enhancing properties of candy last only three minutes. So, before you rip open that wrapper, ask yourself if the indulgence is really worth it.

Know what 150 calories of candy looks like.

This is a relatively harmless amount to enjoy. But it’s easy to overdo it with those fun-size treats.

Keep this list in mind: 150 calories is approximately three mini York Peppermint Patties, two fun-size packages of milk chocolate M&Ms, six mini Musketeers, six rolls of Smarties, seven Hershey’s Kisses, and five snack-size Twizzler twists.

In a candy coma? Give yourself a clean slate. If, despite your best efforts, you still wake up in with a candy-triggered Halloween hangover, don’t beat yourself up over it. Have a filling breakfast with fiber and protein to help steady your blood sugar (try oatmeal with some berries and nuts) and go for a nice, normal, healthy workout at your usual

time.

THE RHYTHM OF CRANES

andhill cranes are not rare around here; we see them from the Camas Prairie, all along Highway 20, up into the Sawtooth Valley.

They are, however, an unusual-looking bird, so much so that they make a casual sighting an unusual experience. They are big enough to be mistaken for deer, until you stop looking for the extra set of legs and realize you are staring at a bird.

They sport jaunty red caps that somehow seem perfectly complementary to their booming throkking—a call that easily connects them to the dinosaurs that they are. And they bob around in the distance, just far enough away to be, well, away.

Usually.

Then along comes fall, and you find yourself at the blinking light (our childhood name for the intersection where you either go right to Boise or straight on to Twin—you know, the place with the blinking light?). Whether it’s early morning or later in the evening, at some point in the fall you will be treated to Sandhills en masse—not one or two, not even several pairs, but dozens of them. While birds are always called flocks, this is as close to a herd of birds as you will see (outside of ostrich country).

We are used to skeins of geese honking through the sky. Or clumps of songbirds flitting through the willows. There is something in our psyche that seems not just to like flocks, but to long for them. This probably has as much to do with birds as food as anything. For our entire existence, birds have been on the menu. But there seems to be something else, too. Something I recognize only when I slow down enough to pay attention to it.

And a big flock of Sandhills will make you slow down, stop, stare, and just kind of wonder.

It’s when I pay attention long enough that I find something, or start to recognize it. It is a little twinkle of awe. Not the big “Whoah!” feeling I get every time I turn that first corner on the top of Galena Summit and see the Sawtooths, but a subtler, “There is something here that I do not understand” kind of spark.

Biology is pasted onto a physical, chemical, geological world. It is the messy cousin of the sciences. We can send a probe to do a flyby of Pluto.

Or rather, we did; in effect, solving one massive math problem. But try and explain why the grass-

hoppers were back in force this summer, or why whales sing, or why the Sandhills arrived earlier this year, and you’ll start to see pretty quickly that biology unfolds a little differently; that living things necessarily add a different kind of variability.

This is why birds infiltrate our minds. This is why the Sandhills matter. They are one of a thousand signs we used to use to make sense of our world. They are one of the great rhythms we are so wonderful at discerning, and seem just as bent on dampening. The Sandhills always do me a favor—they help me remember. And that is always worth a trip to the blinking light.

mma Lago, a senior at Wood River High School, currently takes AP Environmental Science, College English and College Algebra, as well as her favorite class, AP Government and Politics.

“It’s my favorite class because I enjoy learning the history of America, mainly so I can understand ‘Saturday Night Live’ skits,” Lago said. “I’m not really into politics at all but I am learning a lot.”

Along with her declared disinterest in politics, Lago is also the chapter leader for Next Generation Politics, a club that was founded last fall by Gracie Doyle, a fellow student.

“I really didn’t like the club in the beginning,” Lago said. “But then we started doing things like setting up voter registrations and we hosted a walkout.”

The walkout, conducted at WRHS last year, was a branch off of March For Our Lives, a reaction from the Parkland, Fla., school shooting. The youth chose to host the walkout against all violence in schools, instead of targeting guns.

Lago is also in the environmental club known as WATER, and National Honor Society. In the winter, she plays on the U-19 Girls’ hockey team.

“I’ve been playing hockey for seven years,” Lago said. “It all started with a group of friends that just chose to sign up in first

grade together and now we’ve won two state tournaments.”

Lago’s team is hoping for a third state championship this year. In the summer, Lago travels to Camp Perkins, a Lutheran Outdoor Ministries camp for kids in Stanley.

“I love working with kids,” Lago said. “I lead kids in games and Bible studies, and it’s just so much fun.”

This year, Lago is applying to colleges in search of screenwriting programs.

“My mom helped me find Chapman University, in Orange, Calif.,” Lago said. “And the school is 10 minutes away from Disneyland, so that’s great.”

As Lago prepares for her final moments in her high school career, she hopes students know that she’s there for them. Two of her inspirations are Chris Hansen, advisor at WRHS for Next Generation Politics, and Amy Poehler, the actress and comedian.

“I hope others remember me, and think: that Emma Lago girl, she was a hoot,” Lago said. “And that people always know they can come to me and I’ll have some cheery joke.” tws

FAST TRACK RENTAL PROPERTY

F

HA allows owner-occupants to purchase up to a four-unit property with a minimum 3.5 percent down payment.

The rent collected on three units could be used to make the payment, and the owners’ pro-rata share would be less than one-quarter of the payment itself.

The owner-occupied unit would be considered their principal residence. The other three units are treated as rental property and eligible for cost recovery, a non-cash deduction plus all the normal business expenses. The rental income of the three remaining units is calculated as income and assists the buyer in qualifying.

A homeowner could buy a four-unit, live in one for two years, buy another four-unit with a minimum down payment, move into one unit, rent the other three, as well as the previous unit in the first property. Then, after another two years, repeat the same process over again.

The fifth year, the homeowner/investor would have a total of 11 rental units, plus the one that they are occupying. An acquisition strategy like this might be difficult for a family with children and a single person or couple might find it easier to move more frequently.

As the equity increases in these properties, due to appreciation and amortization, the money could be pulled out through refinancing to purchase additional income properties. Another objective might be to pay the mortgage off as soon as possible and any cash flow after tax could be applied directly to the principal.

FHA has a nationwide mortgage limit for a four-unit of $521,250, but some high-cost areas have been designated with increased limits. There are also loan programs for two- and three-unit properties with limits of $347,000 and $419,425, with similar exceptions for high-cost areas.

The low mortgage rate and minimal down payments for owner-occupied FHA mortgages makes this strategy attractive because it gives investors an opportunity to highly leverage their investment. Most non-owner-occupied (investor) mortgages would require 20-25 percent down payment and have a slightly higher interest rate than for an owner-occupant.

It is alleged that John Hailey brought the first sheep to the Wood River Valley in the late 1860s. By 1918, the population of sheep skyrocketed to 2.65 million, nearly six times Idaho’s human population. Ketchum became one of the world’s major sheep-shipping centers, second in size only to Sydney, Australia.

To commemorate this rich ranching heritage, Ketchum and the Wood River Valley will celebrate the 22nd annual Trailing of the Sheep Festival, Wednesday to Sunday, Oct. 10-14. The festival is heralded by MSN Travel as “one of the top ten fall festivals in the world” and by USA Today as one of the “ten best festivals in America.” The Trailing of the Sheep has also received the Governor’s Award for Cultural Heritage and is a sheep spectacular not to be missed.

“The festival is a great community event because it is an opportunity for us to educate and celebrate sheep ranching and sheep herding in Idaho and in the West,” said Laura Musbach Drake, director of Trailing of the Sheep Festival. “This is an opportunity to celebrate our history and our past, while looking to the future of sheep ranching as an industry.”

Festival headquarters will open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Limelight Hotel on Main Street in Ketchum.

Open daily throughout the festival, visitors can stop by for questions, registration assistance and festival swag.

Thursday events include “Cooking with Lamb” classes from some of the Valley’s most talented chefs. Additionally, Taste & Craft/Ketchum will serve as a new kickoff celebration for the Trailing of the Sheep Festival. Guests can gather at the Limelight Hotel from 4-9:30 p.m. Thursday to enjoy a variety

The Sheep Folklife Fair is Saturday’s main event, held in Roberta McKercher Gateway Park in Hailey from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Meet 70 artisans with unique creations, see sheep shearing up close and personal, enjoy traditional music and dancing, and feast on lamb delicacies. The fair boasts numerous children’s activities.

ART HISTORY LECTURE THURSDAY OCTOBER 18 5:30PM / THE CENTER / KETCHUM Sun Valley Center for the Arts will host a lecture by art historian Elaine French as part of its current BIG IDEA project, “We the People: Protest and Patriotism.” The lecture is titled “Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s Allegory of Good and Bad Government: 14th Century Ideas with Relevance Today.”

At the beginning of the 14th century, the Italian city of Siena was governed by a group of nine wealthy merchants known as the Nove. While not a democratic or participatory form of governance, this oligarchy gave Siena a period of stability and prosperity that encouraged the production of remarkable works of art, some of which had explicit political import. In Siena’s Palazzo Pubblico, the walls of the Nove’s meeting room were adorned with a series of three extensive fresco panels painted by Ambrogio Lorenzetti. These works, collectively known as the “Allegory of Good and Bad Government,” provided moral lessons in governing and embodied the new civic humanism of the era. The ideas about government that Lorenzetti conveyed in his murals still resonate today.

erry Ring started as a guide at Silver Creek Outfitters in 1979—39 years ago.

He became the sole owner in 1989.

“And, I still sometimes work 80 hours a week,” he said. That’s because he loves what he does and loves where he lives.

“First and foremost, I feel so lucky to have landed here,” Terry said. “It is such a beautiful place and I appreciate the community so much. When I arrived, I met people like Bill Janss, Don and Gretchen Fraser and Clara Spiegel. We became friends. It was a bridge for me between the old school and the new.”

“The place is inspiring, but so are the people that are here or are drawn here,” Terry added.

“The fly-fishing part of Silver Creek Outfitters started in 1963 with Dick Alfs, a box of hooks, some fur, feathers and thread,” Terry said. “One fly turned into two, and so on. This business is a labor of love.”

“A big part of Silver Creek’s business is fly fishing,” Terry shared. “The guide service is also very important. Some people want to go out on their own fishing, but as people get older, they often take a guide to help with transportation and lots of other needs. It’s another thing I love about this community. People are passionate about fly fishing and being out in nature. They never want to give it up.”
