Gallery Walk • February 17 from 5-8 p.m. Artist Chats on February 18 at 10 a.m. SUZANNE HAZLETT ‘Universal Solvent’

‘Universal Solvent’—Idaho artist Suzanne Hazlett’s new exhibit of paintings—is inspired by the universal importance and evocative power of water. Through her surfaces of encaustic, resin pigment and ground marble, Hazlett explores the scientific and mythic properties of water as a unifying substance. For Hazlett, form and process are inextricably linked. By the application of some 20 to 30 layers, Hazlett manipulates pigment through varying degrees of intensity, texture and translucence, evoking the physical properties of water. Accompanying the exhibition is an online catalog available through the Gail Severn Gallery website: http://www.gailseverngallery.com/assets/suh-2017-online-catalog.pdf

Carolyn Olbum, inspired by her natural surroundings, gathers dried vines and branches, seedpods and fallen leaves. Olbum transforms organic materials with her hands, using clay to create a metamorphosis to cast bronze sculpture. Carolyn holds a degree in sculpture and fine arts from Chatham University and is a highly regarded ceramicist. Olbum notes that “it is the combination of fallen tree limbs—their simplicity and elegance—that have inspired me… empty birds’ nests, arranged in crevices and niches of barren trees, that suggest an element of mystery, history, of life in nature.” An online exhibition catalog is available through the Gail Severn Gallery: http://www.gailseverngallery.com/assets/cao-2017-online-catalog.pdf

“THE EXPERIENCE OF COLOR II” Julie Speidel • Gary Komarin • Lynda Lowe Linda Christensen • Rana Rochat • Jenny Honnert Abell

Julie Speidel’s colorful, stainless-steel sculptures encompass an array of cultural influences, including forms from the Stone Age into 20th-century Modernism. Gary Komarin’s post-painterly abstractions present a bold and colorful style recognized by art collectors and museum curators worldwide. Lynda Lowe paints and sculpts poetically, with power and delicacy in her beautiful, inscribed surfaces. Linda Christensen’s bright, figurative paintings catch people who are in a “private place” and are turned within. Rana Rochat’s works are pictorial metaphors using marks, forms, colors, as well as the luminosity and visual depth of the encaustic medium. Jenny Honnert Abell’s intimate painted collages are filled with fantasy and imagination.

‘REVELO,’ A GROUP EXHIBITION

Friesen Gallery

n its inaugural exhibition of 2017, Friesen Gallery will showcase the work of five consummate and illustrious American artists: Martin Blank, Suzanne Caporael, Nicole Chesney, Lawrence Fodor and Chris Richter. The show, entitled REVELO (Latin for “to reveal, unveil or lay bare”), celebrates the way in which the distillation of forms and gestures found in nature— the boundless blue of a noontime sky, the graduated color shift of the ether at sunset, the dance of shadow and light between two swaying Cypress trees—gives way to discovery, reflection and Suzanne Caporael, “BLUE OF NOON,” oil on canvas, 5’ x 7’, 1988. metamorphosis. As glass artist Martin Blank observes, “We in the West think of our lives in a linear way. But life isn’t linear. It resonates, ring upon ring, a layering of time. What you do and say now will have effects on people and places you cannot yet possibly know. Nature is a resource, but it’s just the source. It’s the place we come from—and where we will go.” New work by Nancy Mee, Dennis Evans and Steve Jensen will also be on display. REVELO will be on exhibit at Friesen Gallery from Wednesday, February 15, through mid-March. The gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, February 17 from 5-8 p.m. Friesen Gallery is located at 320 First Ave. N. at Sun Valley Road in Ketchum. ounded in 1982, Kneeland Gallery is one of the oldest and most established galleries in the Wood River Valley. The gallery represents approximately 40 artists, featuring works from realism to impressionism in a variety of mediums. “Our gallery generally keeps to its theme of presenting the best traditional landscapes and still-life paintings we can find,” Carey Molter, gallery director, explained. “I think we appeal to locals and people from out of town who want to take a little piece of Idaho home with them, because many of our paintings feature local scenes.” For the upcoming Gallery Walk on Friday,

DISCOVER GILMAN CONTEMPORARY

I

‘ARBORES VENERABILES’

BY DANA DUGAN

t began with a single idea: to expose fresh, young, innovative artists to the Wood River Valley. Gilman Contemporary opened nearly 10 years ago, the anniversary of which will be celebrated at the July 7 Gallery Walk. A resident of the Valley since 1991 when she “came for the summer,” L’Anne Gilman worked at several galleries prior to opening her own on Sun Valley Road in Ketchum. “We saw a niche for emerging artists,” said Casey Hanrahan, gallery director. “Initially, we were interested in abstracts, with crisp, sharp, bold lines. Our goal, in addition to educating people on collecting photography, was to present fresh work from emerging artists.” Among the artists Gilman represents and shows are James Verbicky, Laura Schiff Bean, Nick Brandt, Alex Timmermans (in the current show), Cecil Touchon, Marco Casentini and Rodney Smith. Smith, a favorite at the gallery for his bold, inventive photographs, passed away in December. He was a renowned New York-based photographer who, in the tradition of Avedon, Penn and William Klein, transcended fashion photography into fine art. His loss is felt keenly at Gilman, and his work remains among the gallery’s most noted pieces. While Gilman Contemporary is known for showing photography, it’s “important to us to have something new here,” Hanrahan said. “Our clientele deserves it. There should always be a discovery taking place.” For Gallery Walk on Friday, the featured artist will be Jill Lear, a part-time Sun Valley resident whose love of and portrayal of important trees will be showcased. Her show is called Arbores Venerabiles. It starts with a single tree in the landscape. Lear’s first order of business is to photograph the tree—

many of which are quite old and notable—venerable, in fact—in black and white, and then make a topographic study involving measurement, proportion, negative space and positive forms. Her work is very traditional, but the way she captures it is very unique. There’s a hint of the Japanese minimalist approach in these pieces; empty spaces for the viewer to fill in. “It’s something I find so poignant in her work,” Gilman said. “For me, these empty spaces she leaves forces me to look beyond the form of the tree itself. What you don’t see allows you to consider the tree’s history—its soul or its spirit, if you will. There is so much more power in what isn’t there. I love that about her work. It has the same storytelling aspect that we strive to exhibit.” In fact, Lear studied Japanese calligraphy, which she feels strongly informed her intention with her brushstrokes. Her work also contains Japanese papers among the mixed media used to complete her spare but evocative paintings. “It’s traditional in theme but innovative in application,” Hanrahan said. On the surface, the work of Alex Timmermans couldn’t be more different. He uses the antique process called collodiun wet plate photography, which uses a portable darkroom in the field. His photographs also contain the storytelling aspect that Gilman desires. “It’s whimsical storytelling,” Hanrahan said. “Funny and fresh, despite being one of the oldest forms of photography.” Guest artists are constantly being mixed into the regular stable of artists shown at Gilman Contemporary. They actively seek new artists through shows like the Art Basel international art fair, other galleries in San Francisco and New York, and in the burgeoning Asian market. “We continue to be interested in the art world,” Hanrahan said. “We’re not resting after 10 years. We’re moving forward.”

Gilman Contemporary

ilman Contemporary is currently presenting “Arbores Venerabiles,” an exhibition of paintings by Jill Lear. Jill Lear is a painter inspired by nature, landscapes and trees. Combining painting, drawing

and collage, Lear’s images of trees are not studies in realism but, rather, recognizable abstract forms. What stands out about Lear’s work is her systematic approach of separating the picture into parts, both conceptually and visually. There

is an inherent restraint in her work and, rather than a replication of the tree, there is as much honor for the space between the branches and roots as there is for the tree itself. Alex Timmermans, “Addicted to Selfies.”

palette of muted colors, and yet he gets really wonderful depth in his work—specially in his mountain scenes.” Utah artist Winegar began studying oil painting at 12 years old. The painter aims to capture intimacy in his work. “I want to capture the spirit of the scene,” Winegar said. “If a painting is truly alive, it has to have a spirit, right? n painting his landscape subject, Utah artist Seth Winegar has concentrated on honing his powers of observation, especially as it concerns color, texture, form and composition. His surfaces are deep in rich oil strokes, and in some sections they are detailed studies of the subject, then flow into loose imaginative segments, which demonstrate his love of juxtaposition and glazing. Bart Walker’s radiant plein air paintings are inspired by trips to the backcountry and brought to life in his studio. He uses oil sketches created in the field to recollect nature’s Silas Thompson, “Travelers,” oil on canvas, 20” x 24”. evocative beauty on his finished canvases, which are reminiscent of early Californian Impressionist landscapes. Lastly, we introduce Silas Thompson in his first exhibition at Kneeland Gallery. Thompson’s passion for drawing and painting was instilled at an early age, fostered by his parents and nurtured under the mentoring of established gallery artist Robert Moore. Setting out on annual backpacking trips with his father, Thompson began to treasure the distinct birthmarks and icons of the beautiful rivers, valleys, and mountains of the West, and the beauty of creation is a continual inspiration for this up-and-coming artist.
