Sam Killermann The Advocates for Survivors of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, in collaboration with the College of Southern Idaho, will bring author, comedian and social justice activist Sam Killermann to the Wood River Valley for two talks open to the public at the Community Campus in Hailey and the Limelight Hotel in Ketchum.

The co-creator of TheSafeZoneProject.com, Killerman has spoken to more than 230 universities, high schools and numerous keynotes.

“The Advocates has been working hard to bring Sam Killermann to our community for the past year,” said Heidi Cook, The Advocates’ violence prevention educator.

Last year, Cook went to a national teen conference in Las Vegas and met Killermann.

They’ve been communicating for over a year about him coming to the Wood River Valley.

“He is very approachable and educates in a way that encourages participants to want to learn more,” Cook said. “Through his

humor and development of learning points, he will be talking about identity, gender and social justice for everyone, all relevant topics in our country.”

Killerman has given three well-received TEDx Talks, is the author of “A Guide to Gender” and co-author of “Unlocking the Magic of Facilitation.” His work has been featured in Time magazine, The Atlantic, HuffPost, The New York Times, Slate, Wired, National Geographic, and others. Recently, he participated in the National Geographic documentary “Gender Revolution” hosted by Katie Couric.

“We’ve been working a lot with gender issues, partially due to the Blaine County School District’s gender-inclusive policy,” said Darrel Harris, The Advocates’ social change coordinator.

“The talks are good for social justice advocates and nonprofits.

REPEAL OF GROCERY SALES TAX CLEARS HOUSE

On Monday, March 20, the Idaho Senate, by a vote of 25-10, approved a bill that would phase out the Idaho sales tax on food products over a two-year period.

This tax exemption would likely start on June 1, 2018. Idaho is currently one of just four states that impose a full sales tax on food purchases. The Idaho sales tax stands at 6 percent.

Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has repeatedly said he opposed this change.

A week later, on Monday, March 27, the House’s Revenue and Taxation Committee voted unanimously to send the bill to the House Floor with a “do pass” recommendation. A short time later, the same day, the House voted 51-19 in favor of the bill.

Rep. Steve Miller, R-Blaine, voted nay.

During the public comment part of the committee hearing, proponents testifying in favor of the bill said the bill would eliminate the $100 grocery credit given to Idaho taxpayers on their state income taxes. The grocery credit is counted against the filer's tax liability and is not a refund check. Advocates also said that the savings obtained by the elimination of the sales tax would likely be spent on other purchases, which are still taxable.

Commenters also said towns near the Oregon border suffer from theses tax as many Idaho residents shop in Oregon where food purchases are not taxed.

Sen. Steve Bair, R-Blackfoot, suggested that the state could receive unexpected tax income

since Amazon, the online behemoth that began as a bookseller, will now tax purchases originating in Idaho.

Otter opposes the bill, claiming that it would create a $50 million yearly shortfall in state revenue, and has threatened to veto it.

Many critics of the sales tax on food purchases claim that the tax is regressive and affects low-income families the most. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a typical Idaho family of four spends a yearly average of $7,600 on food purchases.

The tax portion is $456. Food items that meet Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) guidelines would be exempted from the sales tax. tws

WHERE DOES ALL THE (POLLUTED) SNOW GO?

t has been a big winter in terms of snowfall in the Wood River Valley— the largest in history, with double the historical average amount of water content in the snow. Now that it’s spring, and temperatures have risen, all that snow is melting. The water from this year’s snowpack will help drought-ravaged reservoirs, aquifers and the environment in general, but there will be some negative consequences.

The most obvious and immediate will be flooding, but there is another with higher potential and longer-lasting dangers for humans and the larger environment. That will come from the enormous piles of snow from all the roads, streets, parking lots, driveways and alleys that must be plowed in order to keep the community mobile. All that snow must be deposited somewhere relatively close to where it originally landed but out of the way of commerce and convenience. Hauling it long distance is not economically or environmentally viable.

In Ketchum, much of it winds up at Serenade Lane at the base of the River Run side of Bald Mountain, and there’s more than frozen water in that snow, as there is in all the deposit sites throughout the Valley.

Among the ingredients one can find in the road-plowed snow everywhere are garbage, gravel, asbestos, antifreeze and oil.

According to Torsten Meyer of the University of Toronto, “By the time snow has turned black with muck and grime, many harmful chemicals—including those from pesticides, car exhaust, telecommunications wiring insulation, water repellant, clothing, paints or coatings—may

have already seeped out of the snow and into the surrounding groundwater or surface water.”

Meyer adds that in winter, salt with anti-caking cyanide compounds is applied to roads, and when the snow melts, all these chemicals are released into the environment at high concentrations, and the snowmelt season corresponds with mating season and spawning activity in streams, wetlands and estuaries. And all that snow at Serenade Lane is melting into the Big Wood River.

“The City of Ketchum has been concerned about them,” said Wendy Pabich, a water consultant for the City of Ketchum, and president of Water Futures. “As a result, they conducted water testing of samples from the snow pile and up and downstream of it. Testing showed no river contamination. The city will be conducting further soil profile testing this season.

At the same time, they have investigated a number of site alternatives, including state lands at Ohio Gulch, a BLM site, and Forest Service lands out Trail Creek, none of which were found to be compelling.”

According to Scott Boettger, executive director of the Wood River Land Trust, the ideal site for dumping snow would be in a large area close to town but far enough away that it wouldn’t melt directly into streams and with soil capacity to filter dangerous chemicals.

“Such ideal places are hard to find because of environmental sensitivity and because no one wants such piles of polluted snow in their neighborhood,” Boettger said.

He pointed out that plowed snow used to be dumped directly into the Big Wood River and that piling it next to the river to wait for spring melt “…obviously amounts to much the same thing environmentally.”

He praised Jackson Hole, Wyo., for its solution to the problem—dumping it in the downtown rodeo grounds and its parking lot, which is in town, and a long way from any river or stream and on land that’s not environmentally sensitive.

Reports of contaminated well water in southcentral Idaho communities are proliferating as spring melt continues. Sixteen wells with possible contamination are being tested by the Idaho Department of Agriculture in Lincoln County, and some wells are being retested in northeastern Gooding County. People as close

as north of Shoshone have been boiling water for drinking and bathing after finding it smelly and discolored. Extensive snowmelt and flooding may be the cause.

Municipalities have been advised that snow piles should be at least 1,000 feet away from water supply wells, and located downhill to avoid lakes, streams and wetlands.

PROSECUTION RESTS IN BUNDY STANDOFF TRIAL FBI involvement revealed

he prosecution has rested, maybe, in the first stage of a trial being held in Las Vegas regarding an armed confrontation between supporters of cattle rancher Cliven Bundy and law enforcement in Bunkerville, Nev., in April 2014.

The current trial includes six men; two of the defendants are from Hailey. Prosecutors reserved the right to come back next week after reviewing evidence in case they find anything they missed while on break this week.

The federal conspiracy cases against Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and others are set up to be tried in three stages.

The prosecution characterizes the defendants—from Idaho, Arizona and Oklahoma—as the least culpable ‘followers and gunmen’ among 19 men arrested almost three years ago in early April 2014.

In opening statements, Prosecutor Steven Myhre said the defendants were willing participants in Bundy’s plan to retrieve cattle that had been corralled by federal agents and so-called “contract cowboys.”

However, the defendants, Eric Parker and Steven Stewart of Hailey, Scott Drexler of Challis and Todd Engel of Boundary County, claim they drove down in a show of support for public lands and were not previously acquainted with the Bundy family or their fellow defendants, Gregory Burleson of Phoenix and Richard Lovelien of Westville, Okla.

Drexler, Engel, Parker and Stewart are members of 3% of Idaho, an organization that pledges resistance against the U. S. government regarding in-

fringement of the U.S. Constitution.

Among the issues that came out during the prosecution’s case was the existence of video shot by a fake production company called Longbow.

Undercover FBI agents posed as documentary filmmakers for a production called “America Reloaded” to draw incriminating statements from the men.

The production team offered the men alcoholic beverages before being filmed, in an attempt to loosen their tongues, said Andrea Parker, Eric Parker’s wife, who has been at the trial every day.

Eric Parker’s attorney, Jess Marchese, said his client gave the company a 90-minute interview while he was in Hailey in 2014.

Eric Parker posted on Facebook in August 2014 that a member of Longbow Productions told him the company was making a documentary about the standoff and wanted his opinion about it.

“I was told that the Bundys were working with them and have given interviews for it,” Parker said in the post. “If I could have that confirmed, I would feel better about talking to them.”

The undercover operation has been alluded to in previous court filings, but it was detailed in federal court Wednesday when the producer of Longbow, FBI Special Agent Charles Johnson (not his real name), testified as a government witness.

“The video humanized Steve and Eric to the jury,” Andrea Parker said. “It was better for them. They’re like your neighbors, regular guys, and then there’s Burleson, who seems crazy and hateful. We don’t know what’s going on with him.”

It was revealed last week that

Burleson was himself a onetime paid FBI informant who tried to infiltrate the protest at Bunkerville for profit.

The prosecution played in court a phone conversation between Burleson and his FBI handler. On the tape, Burleson bragged about being there, saying, “I’ve got information.”

Burleson has been kept apart from the other prisoners because of medical problems. The trial was postponed several times due to his health. It has been reported that he has gone blind, is in a wheelchair and suffers from diabetes. Complaints of lack of medical care have been made throughout the time of his incarceration.

Burleson has been associated with militia groups in Arizona over the years and his rhetoric on Facebook is of an extremist anti-government bent.

“It’s still a mystery how this will play out,” Andrea Parker said on Monday from her home in Hailey where she’s visiting her children. “We don’t know if he was rogue or if the handler knew.”

Late last week there was a motion for dismissal using the "Brady violations," which stipulates that suppression by the prosecution of evidence favorable to a defendant who has requested it violates due process.

It was denied Judge Gloria Navarro.

Meanwhile, Engel had earlier fired his court-appointed lawyer over mismanagement, but has since had to take him back after Navarro stripped him of his rights to represent himself.

The move was prompted by Engel’s questioning of a government witness about BLM agent Dan Love. Love was the federal officer in charge of rounding up Bundy’s cattle for unpaid graz-

ing fees, and is himself being investigated in a separate case.

Navarro also told Eric Parker to remove a pocket U.S. Constitution that was visible in his shirt pocket. According to Andrea Parker, Navarro later allowed him to have it with him as long as it was face down, so as to not influence the jury.

The comments by the five defendants, other than Burleson, back up their continued claim that they heard about the standoff online, and were not asked to come by Bundy or his family.

“None of them knew him at all,” Andrea Parker said. “All the evidence is on Burleson. We just hope the jury recognizes the difference between the other five men and Burleson. I have observed that in the six weeks

the same evidence is presented over and over. It’s putting people to sleep. The jury is more alert during cross-examinations.

“When we go back on Monday there are 11 charges. The defense will try to get some of these dropped for lack of evidence. There are elements of each case that need to be proven.

“In the grand jury indictment, the video shows what actually happened. There were no weapons pointed at the feds. Eric was on the road helping direct traffic when he was told the BLM agents were pointing weapons at the protesters for 40 minutes. He was setting up to provide cover if it went further. His gun had no scope. He wasn’t aiming at agents, it was too far away.” tws

Hammer explores the city’s manuscript heritage and offers never-before-reported details about the militants’ march into northwest Africa. The book is an inspiring account of the victory of art and literature over extremism.

FRESHMAN LEGISLATORS FORM NEW CAUCUS Reps. Mike Kingsley, R-Lewiston, and Bryan Zollinger, R-Idaho Falls, both freshmen representatives, announced the formation of an Idaho House Freedom Caucus on Monday.

Kingsley and Zollinger are looking for a productive way to advance conservative ideals and will co-chair of the group. They expect to have at least 10 members initially, but 24 showed up to a late-afternoon informational meeting.

The proposal to create a conservative caucus comes at the end of a session that has seen frequent conflicts and procedural disputes between House Republican leaders and a group of far-right lawmakers including Reps. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, Ron Nate, R-Rexburg, and Priscilla Giddings, R-White Bird.

According to Betsy Russell of the Spokane Review, Zollinger said the plan is to take input and suggestions over the summer. They say they’re open to anyone who accepts the Idaho Republican Party platform, although the group may become more selective about membership requirements in the future.

WWP ART AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS SYNERGY BETWEEN CONSERVATION AND THE ARTS Western Watersheds Project will hold a silent auction of artwork as a fundraising event to support its Westwide conservation efforts to protect watersheds, wildlife and public lands. The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednes- “Pioneer Mountains at Hyndman Creek with Deer,” day, March 29 by Ginna Parsons Lagergren at The Community Library in Ketchum. The event is open to the public.

“As Westerners, we are surrounded by wide-open spaces that are a source of enjoyment and tranquility, and natural beauty that enriches our lives,” said Erik Molvar, executive director with Western Watersheds Project. “Local and regional artists showcase the same spectacular landscapes and fascinating wildlife that WWP works to protect. There is a natural synergy here between the arts and environmental conservation.”

The auction will feature works from many Wood River Valley artists, as well as artists from numerous other Western states. Artists who donated their work for the event include regionally known landscape artists, emerging talents, and one well-known artist whose work hangs in the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

The works will be sold to the highest bidder in a silent-auction format, with all sale proceeds going to fund WWP’s nonprofit environmental work. Light refreshments will be provided.

“This will be a great opportunity for local residents to come out for an evening of good fun for a great cause, and meet local artists and conservation advocates from around the area,” Molvar said.

As part of the festivities, Molvar will be giving a brief presentation on the ecological problems associated with livestock grazing that Western Watersheds Project is working to solve.

WATER RELEASES WILL AID JUVENILE SALMON MIGRATING TO THE OCEAN Federal dam operators on the Columbia and Snake rivers must increase water releases over spillways at eight dams to improve survival rates for juvenile salmon migrating to the ocean starting in 2018, a federal court ruled Monday. Portland U.S. District Court Judge Michael Simon found that current operation of these federal dams is causing continued irreparable harm to imperiled salmon and steelhead and that increased “spill” indisputably provides safer passage for juvenile salmon navigating the heavily dammed Columbia-Snake River Basin. In the meantime, the spill, in place under court order since the summer of 2005, will continue.

“While we recognize that this relief will not eliminate the harm to salmon and steelhead from dam operations in the long run, we are encouraged that increased spring spill will be granted to reduce irreparable harm to juvenile salmon and steelhead,” said Earthjustice attorney Todd True.

Together with the State of Oregon and the Nez Perce Tribe, Earthjustice sought the injunction to increase voluntary spill on behalf of the National Wildlife Federation, Pacific Coast Federation of Fisheries Associations, Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association, Idaho Rivers United, the Northwest Energy Coalition and other conservation organizations and fishing business associations.

Fishermen were especially encouraged by the court’s decision to require the agencies to provide increased spill until a new lawful plan is in place.

“This is about much more than saving fish,” said Liz Hamilton, executive director of the Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association.

“For more than two decades we’ve been asking federal agencies to do more for our endangered wild salmon,” said Kevin Lewis, executive director of Idaho Rivers United. “It’s unfortunate we’ve had to go to court to get the results our salmon and people who depend on them need, and it’s equally disturbing that the federal government continues to pour tens of millions of dollars into propping up four obsolete dams on the lower Snake River. It’s simultaneously encouraging, however, that a federal judge has once again agreed with us.”

PET COLUMN NO BONES ABOUT IT THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR MARCH 29 - APRIL 4 FROM PICABO ANGLER

T

he winter fishing season is all but behind us at this point. Looking back at 2016 and the first part of 2017, we can say with certainty that we had a really good season. Looking forward, we can look at the snowpack and we can feel very confident we are about to have an epic season.

We will renew the season on May 27 this year, and with that we begin to renew another facet of fly fishing; that is, the facet of kindness and a spirit of helping each other in the Silver Creek Valley. Gone are the days of the uppity angler staring at everyone that walks past. That angler has been replaced by one that says “Hello” and “Good morning!” and “How’s your day going?”

In Picabo, we want to celebrate fly fishing and we want to share fly fishing. We don’t want to fill the river with guides and tell you to buy the flies we tied.

We have guides that will go out of their way to help other anglers they think may need a hand. Our guides will make room for other anglers and will always ask anglers at access points which direction they intend to fish.

In the fly shop at Picabo Angler, we want our guests to feel at home. We want them to ask all the questions they want without any question seeming too small or too silly. We know we all had a starting point and we want to honor those that are just getting their feet wet. We want you to learn in a place of calm and a place of peace.

If you are fish-obsessed to a point where you cannot manage your manners, or seem to think there is ownership of a river or run, we encourage you to fish the high country! You can have all the space and fish you want.

If you want to come to Silver Creek and challenge yourself and find out how good you are at dry-fly fishing, by all means please do, but never at the expense of someone else’s good time.

We can all take away a lot from fly fishing, and it doesn’t all have to be about the fish and fishing. When you get home, we hope you will tell your loved ones a story about how you helped someone catch their first fish on Silver Creek, or maybe the story about the person that helped you catch yours!

FLUFFY WOLVES?

ears ago, my daughter’s first dog, Lucy Jo, a Corgi/Sheltie mix, became our absolute companion in every aspect of our lives. You might recognize her from the photo/ logo on my Positive Puppy van.

Lucy was a rescue and had been found foraging on the streets of Twin Falls. The animal control officer immediately adored her and gave her to a Sheltie-breeder friend of hers, which is who we got Lucy from.

Lucy had many life-preserving skills. She was fearless and a tough cookie. As cute as she was, she was a very wise pup. We would take her camping and hiking with us everywhere. When we camped, we fed her dinner as we had ours. She never ate when we camped; instead, as the sun would go down, she would cover her bowl of food with dirt.

For 10 years Lucy would be my daughter’s 4-H dog and the two of them went on to win countless championships in both local and district dog shows.

More recently, I trained a very beautifully bred English black Labrador retriever service dog.

Fiona lived with me for almost two years as I trained her in every manner for her life in service.

She would learn impeccable home manners, perfect obedience in public, as well as many behaviors to help her disabled owner. One of the things she did for her owner was to retrieve very nearly anything—from a can on the floor to a newspaper

or a prescription bottle or piece of clothing that was dropped.

When Fiona would retrieve, she would quickly run to the object, then “pounce” on it, but picking it up gently.

My Brinx, who is now 10 years old, was sired by one of the top German shepherds in the world in 2005. His sire was VA Kevin v Murrtal SchH3—the only dog in history to win the highest rating (VA) in five countries in one year.

Sheepherding is what German shepherds were originally bred for. When Brinx was 2, I took him to a sheepherding clinic in Battleground, Wash., for one day. A year later, I entered him in an AKC sheepherding trial. The day before the trial, I took one private lesson from an expert.

After working with sheep twice prior to the trial, Brinx earned his AKC sheepherding title. His tenacity to move the sheep and keep them close to me was instinctual and a testimony to the long line of ancestry behind him.

He is a highly bred, healthy and “instinctual” German shepherd.

The point here is not to toot my own horn, but to take three different dogs I know personally— one a mutt, the second a wellbred hunting dog, and the third a well-bred sheepherding dog—to point out the four things they all have in common.

Do you know what it is? All three of them had innate, insatiable instincts to perform behaviors inherited from the wolf— burying food to protect it from other opportunistic predators; pouncing on an object as if it

were a mouse; and chasing prey (sheep), more politically correctly called “herding.” They also all carried that ability to be trained and work for a living.

So, when people tell you that domesticated dogs no longer carry wolf-like behaviors and instincts, this claim could not be further from the truth. Domestication of dogs is really about bringing wolves into our lives that were the most able to be trained to help people in their daily lives. The tiniest, fluffiest adorable dog or the most highly bred dog is a wolf descendent and will carry traits inherited from the wolf. Over time, we used those wolf traits to help us

hunt, gather, and even protect us.

Understanding a dog’s ancestry is important to help us understand why dogs do what they do.

Having innate wolf behaviors isn’t an evil thing. It’s actually one of the things that makes us love them so dearly!

RETREATING SNOWLINE

or the last few days I have been watching the snow pull back from different areas of my yard. The retreat has been slow but steady. The edge of the snow creates a curious shape, full of hollowed-out forms, curves and layers. Sometimes a cave-like dwelling emerges; other times the snow melts away with finger-like shapes stretching over the newly bared ground.

The edge of the snow has obvious layers denoting each snowfall. One layer might be filled with more debris than the previous or the next layer. There are broken branches scattered through the snow. This winter has been rough and the strewn branches, twigs, pine needles and leftover autumn leaves reflect that.

Huge mounds of snow still remain. These mounds have pockets and indentations. They are not the pristine expanse of freshly fallen snow but, rather, are composed of lots of texture filled with nubby bits of dirt.

I am beginning to see the contours of the land once again.

of land in direct sunlight because the earth, in these protected zones, is heated by thermal groundwater.

Most startlingly, though, are the small patches of land peeking through which actually have green vegetation and flowers be-

ginning to bloom.

I still have feet upon feet of snow in my yard, and yet, in a small bare section—maybe one foot by one foot—there is a flower peering out disregarding the white world. But is the flower poking its nose at winter or is

winter defying the flower? Only time will tell.

They can be as anecdotal as an old-timer saying “I’ve never had so much snow in my yard!” Or, they can be as strictly numerical as the so-called “snow water equivalent” data points that regularly report, via radio waves from SNOTEL sensors placed way up in our mountains, measurements of our snowpack (as I write this, this data tells me the amount of snow we have this early March is at more than 180 percent of historical median).

Spring is an important time for our local wildlife. Those who have survived this particularly difficult winter thus far will soon be able to let down their guard and start looking forward to a green future. Earlier this winter, Idaho Fish and Game warned us that as many as 80 percent of young deer fawns in our region could perish, an example of how extraordinarily deadly a deep snowpack can be for local ungulates, and a reminder of what local animals have been going through.

I am waiting for the first person to tell me that they saw a robin (Turdus migratorius) in their yard, as the presence of that bird is such a common symbol of spring’s arrival. As you consider breaking out your bike for the first time or wearing your flip-flops outside to walk to the store, take a moment to think about all of the other forms of life that have been anxiously awaiting this transition.

ZACH NELSON Helping people heal

ood River High School senior Zach Nelson plans to pursue a career in medicine, most likely after serving his country in the military. Carrying a 3.58 grade point average, Nelson also plays football, basketball and baseball for the Wolverines while working summers at Hailey Paint.

While at WRHS, Zach enhanced his academics by taking a variety of Advanced Placement classes, including U.S. History, Micro and Macro Economics, Psychology, Language and Composition, Statistics, Government, and Physics.

He first became interested in medicine when a series of mishaps sent him to the doctor when he was 12 years old.

“First, I broke my foot badly and followed this up by breaking my collarbone and suffering serious lacerations in an ATV accident,” Zach said.

“I listened to the doctor and saw how much of a difference they make. My dad taught me to care for other people, so I want to help people in any way possible.

“It’s similar to the military, which I want to pursue. You can help people as a medic or as a soldier. I also want everyone to have the same opportunities as I had.”

Zach’s hope is to enter either the Naval or Air Force academy.

“If I get in, it would be a fouryear program with a great opportunity to go to their medical school,” he said. “Or the military would pay for me to go to a private

med school after completing five years of service.”

Zach said he leans toward the Navy because that’s where his grandfather served. But he might have regrets about not applying to West Point.

“In the Navy, I would try to be a SEAL. It would be amazing and the ultimate accomplishment.

I also have an interest in flying, which is why I’m interested in the Air Force. To me, there would be nothing like getting my medical training in the service while also helping my country.”

His sophomore year, Zach shadowed two local surgeons—Dr. Tony Buoncristiani and Dr. Daniel Judd.

“I learned the anatomy of the shoulder and the knee,” Zach said.

“I was really interested in both joints because of my involvement in baseball.

“There wasn’t a time when they weren’t seeing patients. It was back to back to back. Unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to see surgeries.”

Right now he is taking sports medicine at WRHS, which covers athletic training and anatomy. But he did get to see a hip replacement surgery online.

WOUND CARE & HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY

W

ound care is the most common use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT, in a hospital. HBOT treatments for diabetic wounds, failed skin grafts and flaps are conditions typically covered by insurance companies. Unfortunately, it is one of the last modalities prescribed, if at all. This is not because it is unsafe or that there are too many contraindications. It is simply because HBOT treatments in a hospital setting cost about $2000 per treatment. This can be cost prohibitive when the patient might need approximately 20 treatments. Hyperbarics of Sun Valley, located in Hailey, is Idaho’s only freestanding HBOT facility. At $200 per session, treatments are not only affordable and accessible to the patient, but effective.

Hyperbaric oxygen is so effective, patients usually have a 90 percent success rate healing the wound and saving the limb. More and more, HBOT is making headlines and a difference. Before 2005, it was believed that HBOT only supplied the extra oxygen the tissue needed to grow properly. In 2005, the Pennsylvania School of Medicine determined that just one hyperbaric treatment would double your stem-cell production. A course of 20 treatments would give a patient an 800 percent increase over normal stemcell production and mobilization. These are your stem cells keyed with your DNA. They are vital to the healing process.

Essentially, HBOT is stemcell therapy with added oxygen to help stem cells grow into healthy tissue. With HBOT, we can grow capillaries (the smallest blood vessels) large enough that they will self-sustain in 10 days.

In 2013, a study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine determined that at 2.5 atmosphere absolute, or ATA, you could get a third more stem-cell production than discovered in the previous study. Because HBOT lays down new collagen, helps mend bones and drastically reduces inflammation, it is considered by many to be the most effective wound care treatment available today.

In most wound care situations, we can cut the healing time by approximately 50 percent and reduce scarring by 40 to 50 percent. Reducing the inflammation also reduces much of the pain associated with the wound. HBOT heightens the immune system and kills anaerobic bacteria, thereby limiting the likelihood of infection.

HBOT is commonly used in professional sports and horse racing to speed up recovery time for the athlete. Whether you’re a diabetic, an athlete or someone who would just like to speed up the recovery time, HBOT is a safe adjunct to most wound care situations.

INTERFAITH GROUP TO HOST BONHOEFFER FILM The Northwest premiere of “Come Before Winter,” a film detailing the last days of Lutheran pastor and Nazi resister Dietrich Bonhoeffer, will be held 7 p.m. Monday, April 17 at the Community Campus in Hailey. BOXZILLA CHALLENGE

T

he Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates nearly 3.8 million incidences of sports-related concussions occur every year.

In 2012, Idaho passed legislation that requires middle schools, junior high schools and high schools have a concussion management plan in place.

Concurrently, St. Luke’s Wood River (SLWR) started developing an integrated concussion management program to support the community. As of this spring, SLWR will be providing all the baseline and post-concussion testing for the middle school, high school, and all community club sports, except hockey. To date, SLWR has provided 873 baseline tests and 636 post-concussion tests at no cost through the Rehabilitation department. A baseline test should be taken every two years through college age.

Concussion is a brain injury caused by uncontrolled rapid head movements. This can happen from car, work, playground, or sport accidents as well as direct blows to the head or face from falls or violent events. Depending on which area of the brain is injured, many different temporary or permanent problems can occur.

Sun Valley Resort proposes changes to Cold Springs Canyon

The public is invited to attend an open house about the proposed Cold Springs Canyon project from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Friday, March 31, at River Run Lodge. Sun Valley Resort staff, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and project managers will answer questions and provide information.

The proposed Cold Springs Canyon project will include replacing the Cold Springs chairlift, increasing skiable terrain within bounds, and rerouting and improving the area’s mountain bike trail.

There are a number of elements to the project, one being the replacement of the Cold Springs chairlift, the oldest lift still operating at the resort. The new lift will be a detachable quad with a vertical of 1,525 feet and be approximately 5,500 feet in length, taking skiers and riders on a six-minute ride to The Roundhouse.

Skiable acreage within the Sun Valley Resort boundary will increase from 2,054 to 2,444 after the project is completed.

Access to the new terrain will be from the top of Seattle Ridge, where skiers and riders may descend into the “Turkey Bowl,” then proceed to the north for access to extensive tree skiing.

Snowmaking would be extended down the Lower Broadway run to the base of the new Cold Springs lift terminal.

The current Cold Springs mountain bike trail will be rerouted and improved.

The Cold Springs Canyon project is located in both USFS and BLM areas, and completely within the current Sun Valley Ski Area Special Use Permit. It was submitted as an amendment to the existing Sun Valley Master Plan, which was approved in 2007. Fieldwork will begin this summer with an environmental assessment, then construction slated to begin as early as summer 2018.
