With a growing desire to have her own salon, she established Cari’s Hair Care in 1975 in a small home salon in the China Gardens subdivision in Hailey. When she outgrew her home salon, and with a growing clientele, Cari relocated to Hailey’s Main Street, and then later to her current location in Centennial Station at 400 N. Main Street. During the growing and building of her business, Cari and her husband Dwain raised three sons, all of whom graduated from Wood River High School and have gone on to successful careers in their chosen fields. Cari is proud to say that she has now served the Valley for 40 years. In addition to hair and salon services, Cari is also a licensed realtor and is an associate with Sunland Investments. In 2006, after relocating to San Francisco, she found her partner in “grime,” Bruce Pugh. In 2013, Bruce (by now her husband) and she headed back to Ketchum to renovate and clean up her family’s building, the Shubin Property Center, located at 220 Lewis St., #1, in Ketchum’s light industrial area. Building on her love of dogs and the idea of cleaning up, Shubin and Pugh opened The Laundromutt in 2014. “We have had the most remarkable response from our loving community,” Shubin said. “Providing a Rocco, Laundromutts’ unofficial mascot, niche in two separate in- pops his collar with pride. HOW TO WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN
208 IMAGES & MEDIA
Structure your future with flair
N
BY DANA DUGAN
o time to go back to school and get a master’s in business? You’re not alone. People have great ideas every day, but putting them into practice takes ambition and structure. The first thing to be done is time-consuming but absolutely necessary. First, you need to create an executive summary. This is a snapshot of your business plan as a whole and touches on your company profile and goals. This summary is like the anchor of your business plan. If you don’t nail it, many investors and banks will go no further into the plan itself. Have someone edit your work for grammar and spelling errors. Don’t count on spell check for this task. Next, write a company description that will provide information on what you plan on doing, why your business will be unique and different from others, and what market your business will potentially serve. This third step will take all your research skills. You will need to look into the industry you want to join, and understand what your competitors are doing in order to create a market analysis. Organization and management structure for your business is vital. Because businesses are structured differently, you’ll need to decide, hopefully with some legal advice, if you want to be a corporation, a limited liability, a partnership, or retain sole proprietorship, which is the most basic type. What are your products and services?
Include information about their specific benefits. This plan should also include information about your product or service’s ability to meet consumer needs, any advantages your product has over that of the competition, and what stage of development your product is in. Detail your marketing and sales strategy. How do you plan to market your business, and to whom? The U.S. Small Business Administration says it’s important to break this into activities. Like most people, you will probably seek funding to get off the ground with your new business. You will need to provide extensive and well-crafted financial projections to back up your request. Find out what information you need to include in your financial projections for your small business. Be specific. Finally, how do you foresee making your business plan really jump out? You’ll want to avoid jargon in your writing, and show how you’ve handled money in the past. Running a profitable business takes perseverance, sound judgment, and a serious work ethic. This would be a good time to blow your own horn on these matters. Promises mean nothing. History is all. Be as brief and clear as possible while highlighting the three overlapping concepts: what you’ve done in the past, what you plan to do in the immediate future, and how investors will benefit. For more information visit the Small Business Administration at sba.gov.

Jennifer Simpson
ehind the lens of 208 Images & Media is Hailey resident Jennifer Simpson, who started her photography business five years ago in Iowa. Simpson moved with her small family to Hailey in 2012 and re-branded her business to 208 Images & Media. She enjoys being a hardworking mom of two, teaching teen hip-hop dance for Footlight Dance Centre, and working for The Weekly Sun. Simpson worked in the insurance business for more than seven years, but was always drawn to the camera. In her younger years, she shot with a Canon film camera and used a basic 35mm prime lens. Back then, she learned the art of developing film in a darkroom, and enjoyed manipulating images. Since then, she’s graduated to a full-frame, digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, and plays with a wide variety of lenses. “The 70-200mm F:28 with image stabilization has become one of my favorites, but the 24mm prime is also a great go-to lens,” Simpson said. Simpson now finds herself photographing everything from families, senior portraits and business head shots to skateboarding Jennifer Simpson. Photo Courtesy of Kat events and weddings. Cannell Photography “I have been very fortunate to have made that pivotal move in 2012 to the Sun Valley area,” Simpson said. “Our kids have access to all the outdoor recreation and great schooling, and I have received wide support in my professional life. I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with other great photographers in the Valley, and they have shown me great support in getting my business up and going here. I think that is a real testament to the area we live in.” Simpson continues to focus her work mostly in Idaho, but has traveled with her work upon request. “It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and heart to succeed in business here,” Simpson said. “With changes in the photography industry over the years, it’s also been important to be dynamic and always be focused on how I can grow personally.” For more information on Simpson’s services, visit 208images.com or call (208) 721-0658.

HANNAH MCNEES Jersey Girl
H
BY DANA DUGAN
annah McNees, 27, one of five who grew up in New Jersey, knew she wanted to own a restaurant some day. Residents of the Wood River Valley since 2005, McNees and her siblings all went to Wood River High School. She then attended the University of Utah, where she majored in hospitality. “I thought it’d be awesome to own a bar, but then I came to my senses,” she laughed. “Now, here I am.” In October of 2014, McNees bought Shelley’s Deli in Hailey, and earlier this year she bought, in partnership with attorney Ned Williamson, the Muleshoe Tavern, also in Hailey. The deli, since renamed Jersey Girl, has emerged from the change better than ever, with a positive staff and an uptick in the quality of the food, which always comes with a roll and delicious cookie. McNees admits she has a mentality of not saying no to anything. Jersey Girl caters events, does a brisk breakfast and lunch business, and throws a lively Fourth of July – with DJ – on the back deck. “We put ourselves out there in the community,” McNees said. This past spring, McNees jumped into another venture by buying the Muleshoe Tavern from owner Steve Hogan. “I always said I’d never do a dinner restaurant,” she said. “My friends and I were aware that Hailey had a pretty unexciting nightlife. We needed somewhere with a casual local feel, and music. I thought I could do that.” McNees, her partner and staff took over the longtime watering hole on Main Street July 1. They
instituted basic changes, did a minimal facelift, added pool tables and cleaned it up. “It’s now more casual rather than steakhouse,” McNees said. “It’s important that there is something other to do than just belly up to the bar and drink.” Her brother, Luke McNees, a DJ who works in both Los Angeles and the Valley, helps book the music. The restaurant is committed to First Friday DJ nights each month, and having a live band once a month. On Friday, Oct 28, the Muleshoe will host a band for a Halloween party. In December, there will be holiday parties, including a “Disco Drop” party on New Year’s Eve. “This will be the first of many theme parties we throw and with these theme parties we hope to give everyone from Ketchum to Bellevue a chance to dress up and dance their butts off all night long,” McNees said. “At midnight, when the ball drops, we’ll announce our new name and do a sign reveal.” Tickets will go on sale on Nov. 1 and will include food for the entire evening and a champagne toast, of course. Today, McNees works 16 hour days, but she has more up her sleeve. A new concession area at Friedman Memorial Airport will be an extension of Jersey Girl, serving fresh-baked pastries, fruit, local items, a full coffee bar, burritos and sandwiches. It is under construction now beyond the security gate, and will open officially Oct. 28. Is Hannah McNees done taking on the culinary world? Who knows. “That’s just how I roll,” she said.
