This is the third in a series of articles on the state of the cities in Blaine County.

Before the first Sun Valley City Council meeting of 2017, Mayor Peter Hendricks said to his colleagues: “Before we start with the formal proceedings, I would like to note that it has been one year since I took this seat. I would like to thank Council and staff for all of their hard work, concern, diligence and indulgence in 2016. Unfortunately, we had to deal with a number of negative issues, not the least of which was regarding the former city treasurer and the ongoing Hammer lawsuits. Both of these issues are near resolution and will be behind us. There is a sentencing hearing on Feb. 7 and the Idaho Supreme Court has ruled in the City’s favor in the Hammer suits.

“In 2017, we will concentrate on positive matters, such as dealing with employee housing and improvements in infrastructure.

We move forward, leaving the past and its problems behind.

Again, thank you for all of your efforts.”

Hendricks said that the City of Sun Valley owns two Elkhorn condominiums that are for sale.

The money from those sales will be devoted to helping alleviate the problem of affordable housing.

“As a city, we can help alleviate this problem, but we can’t completely solve it,” he said. tws

of city council meetings. He wanted to bring respect, courtesy and collaboration into city government. After two years as a member of the Sun Valley City Council and one year as its mayor, Hendricks is still working on and refining that strategy.

Hendricks told The Weekly Sun that discussions and debates within the Sun Valley City Council are now being carried out in a “cooperative, collegial and collaborative manner.

Debate with respect is the best way to find the right solution to problems. Council members are very accomplished people; they address each other by their first name, which was not the case in the past, and it is very rewarding to work with them.”

Two of the primary issues the City of Sun Valley will address in 2017 are infrastructure, starting with road maintenance in Bitterroot, and to find a way to alleviate the shortage of affordable housing. The city has set aside $730,000 to fix roads in Bitterroot this year.

“We had a meeting with citizens impacted by the Bitterroot area rehab—more than just Bitterroot Road—and listened to concerns and suggestions from them to be considered by the city and its engineers,” Hendricks said. “There will be more meetings to follow before the

According to an ad-hoc “Get Involved” group, the next step is to follow through. Last Thursday, Jan. 19, more than 200 people joined Wood River Valley residents and representatives of nonprofits at the Limelight Hotel in Ketchum for a primer on being involved in the political process.

The Idaho Conservation League’s Betsy Mizell, community engagement associate, and Jonathon Oppenheimer, government relations director, facilitated the lecture, with input from Blaine County Commissioner Angenie McCleary; founder and CEO of Sun Valley Institute for Resilience Aimee Christensen; and community activist Kaz Thea.

Ketchum Mayor Nina Jonas also spoke, briefly, to the room.

“It’s very hard to make decisions without input,” Jonas said.

“What we do here trickles up. It’s so important to show up.”

Across the board the speakers agreed that being involved and making your voice heard takes planning, organization, and sacrifice.

of national websites that people can access for direction, such as Indivisible Guide, One Action A Day, Results.org, Citizens’ Climate Lobby, Women’s March and many more.

Oppenheimer discussed the issues he deals with while lobbying the Idaho State Legislature and told the crowd that anyone can come testify on a subject.

“It’s a little bit frustrating,” Oppenheimer said with a laugh.

“There are some who may not agree with us all the time. Michelle Stennett is one of our heroes. But it’s important to reach out and respectfully tell your representative how you feel.”

He added that there are specific issues you could testify about at the Legislature.

NORDIC FESTIVAL TO HIGHLIGHT BEAUTIFUL CONDITIONS AND TRAILS

42nd Annual Boulder Mountain Tour to take place on Sat., Feb. 4

he Sun Valley Nordic Festival will be held on snow-covered, well-groomed trails around the upper Wood River Valley from Thursday, Feb. 2 through Sunday, Feb. 5.

With more than 200 kilometers of groomed trails, the Sun Valley area has a well-deserved reputation as “Nordic Town USA” for having some of the best Nordic skiing in the country. The 2017 Sun Valley Nordic Festival includes one of the premier Nordic races in the U.S.—the 42nd Zions Bank Boulder Mountain Tour.

The Festival will begin with Nordic Town Sprints from 3-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2 on Second Avenue North across from the post office in Ketchum, followed by the opening ceremony starting at 4:15 p.m.

On Friday, starting at 8 a.m., Lizzy’s Fresh Coffee will supply handcrafted coffee at the bar or to go, a tour of the roasterie, and free tasters. Lizzy’s is located at 971-4 North Main Street in Ketchum.

Boulder Mountain Tour race packet pickups will be held at the Limelight Hotel on

Main Street in Ketchum, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb 3.

The Boulder Mountain Tour will be held the next day, Saturday, Feb. 4, starting at 10 a.m. from Senate Meadows at Galena Lodge and moving south to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, along the Harriman Trail. The Half Boulder will start at 11:30 a.m. from Baker Creek to the SNRA. The Boulder Mountain Tour Expo and Demo Day will take place at the Sun Valley Nordic & Snowshoe Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb 5.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival will screen adventure films at the nexStage Theatre in Ketchum, from 6-10 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Monday.

The Blaine County Recreation District will again offer a $49 nine-day Valley-wide ski trail pass good from Friday, Jan. 28 through Sunday, Feb. 5. Passes will be sold at Backwoods Mountain Sports, The Elephant’s Perch, Sturtevants, Sturtos Hailey, Galena Lodge and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area Headquarters north of Ketchum.

New Winter Recreation Map Includes Upper Wood River Valley

A new, updated recreation map is now available to the public. The map is the product of a collaborative effort that started 18 years ago by the Wood River Winter Recreation Coalition, which included members of the Nordic and Backcountry (NAB) Skiers Alliance, the Sawtooth Snowmobile Club, Blaine County Recreation District and U.S. Forest Service. The updated map shows current non-motorized and motorized winter recreation zones and adjustments resulting from the new Hemingway-Boulders Wilderness designation, as well as groomed trails, backcountry ski areas and yurts in the Wood River Valley and Pioneer Mountains, and groomed snowmobile trails and roads.

Canadian mine in Idaho approved by two federal agencies

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service late last week issued separate decisions approving a plan by Calgary, Canada-based Agrium, Inc., for a 2.4-mile-long open-pit phosphate mine in southeastern Idaho, just east of Pocatello.

Agrium turns phosphate ore into farm fertilizer. Officials said the new Rasmussen Valley Mine will preserve 1,700 jobs and generate about $85 million per year for the local economy in Caribou County. However, the expected life of the mine is just under eight years. Companies move to a new area once an old area is mined out, leaving the scarred mine area fallow. Mining has taken place in the area since the early 20th century.

The area contains one the nation’s most abundant deposits of phosphate, and agribusinesses Simplot and Monsanto also have mines in the area.

But the area also contains 17 Environmental Protection Agency superfund sites because of pollution from past phosphate mining. Federal officials said the latest mine has requirements to avoid those problems.

“The water quality issue is the number one issue that we deal with when it comes to determining impacts with mines that are being permitted now,” said Bill Volt, environmental planning coordinator with the BLM.

Ski patroller dies at Squaw Valley

Joe Zuiches, 42, a ski patroller at Squaw Valley Ski Resort, in California, was killed on the mountain on Tuesday morning during avalanche control work. Zuiches had worked on the professional ski patrol since 2012.

The incident occurred at the top of Gold Coast Ridge at Squaw Valley but may not be avalanche related. North Tahoe Fire Department and the Placer County Sheriff’s Office say an investigation is underway.

he Idaho STEM Action Center, based in Boise, recently awarded the Hailey Public Library funds for a project for kids, but with larger implications for the whole community.

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines—science, technology, engineering and mathematics—in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. Created in 2015 through the Idaho Governor’s Office, the Idaho STEM Action Center seeks to help close educational gaps in these disciplines.

In January, STEM awarded more than $250,000 in grants to education professionals and organizations throughout the state. The grants provide recipients with up to $2,500 each to fund innovative science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computer-science projects. The STEM Action Center received more than 100 applications for the PK12 STEM Grant.

The Hailey library’s project was selected as one of the most innovative STEM ideas, deserving of funding and implementation.

Approved projects range from electronics and robotics to drones and solar cars; from anatomy and physiology equipment like microscopes and plastic models to water-quality testing kits for analyzing fish habitats; camera-trap systems for studying birds and mammals, and augmented-reality systems to explore earth sciences concepts.

LeAnn Gelskey, director of the Hailey Public Library, said the grant will fund the Tinker Time Project, currently being developed at the library. Aimed at third- to fifth-grade students, the project will be intentionally structured around problem-solving, creativity and learning rather than simply providing access to technology. Community stakeholders will work on Tinker Time to create a local STEM ecosystem, Gelskey added.

“STEM knowledge and skills are important to the future of Idaho’s economy and long-term prosperity,” Angela Hemingway, the center’s executive director, said. “STEM-related jobs pay well in Idaho, and for each new STEM job, five more jobs are created.”

Hemingway said the key was for the projects to promote creative thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration—skills even students who don’t pursue STEM careers will find valuable.

“When Idahoans think STEM, we want them to think Idaho STEM Action Center,” Hemingway said. “Our goal is to make our agency the go-to place in the Gem State for STEM resources, grants, professional development, and student competitions.”

“The attempt by some Idaho politicians to take over 34 million acres of public lands continues in the Legislature,” he said.

In fact, a report from the Conservation Economics Institute, commissioned by the ICL, found that the proposal could cost taxpayers more than $1 billion after five years and more than $2 billion after 20 years. Such losses would necessitate the sale of large swaths of land, something Idahoans have routinely objected to.

“The county needs to hear from people who oppose the public land grant,” McCleary said.

“We can work on it at a state level for the community.

“It’s critical to participate with public comments. Getting involved means showing up. We’re healthier and happier if we’re engaged in our communities. We need strong leaders at every level and always vote” McCleary added that people can stretch their involvement by joining boards and partnership with such organizations as Mountain Rides, the Blaine County Housing Authority, , Sun Valley Economic Development, and 5B Restoration Coalition.

Thea, who has run Valley-based organizations, volunteers frequently and runs for

various offices at the local level, encouraged people to write letters, send email and make calls to local media outlets, elected officials, state representatives and all the way to the White House.

“It inspires me to give back to my community,” Thea said.

“There are grassroots opportunities. It takes engagement and participation; the return is a huge benefit. Always show up. Always vote. You can be an inspiration to your family and friends.”

Hadley DeBree, executive director of the Environmental Resource Center in Ketchum, introduced the nonprofits present and encouraged people to sign up with them to volunteer and receive information. Many followed her advice afterwards.

Social movements have roots— it takes time, but it’s important to have specific policy demands, one thing many thought was missing from the nationwide women’s marches. But those who marched knew that getting specific is what comes next.

Christensen ended her talk with a quote from President Barack Obama that summed up the feeling of the meeting: “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” tws

NEW TRUSTEE SOUGHT FOR BLAINE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD New vacation times set for coming school year

he Blaine County School District Board of Trustees met on Tuesday, Jan. 17, to make a few important decisions.

Trustee Rob Clayton initially nominated newest board member Ellen Mandeville to be the new vice chair of the board, but she declined due to family reasons.

Mandeville turned around and nominated Clayton, who will replace Elizabeth Corker, who resigned earlier this month.

The board started the process of filling the newly vacant Zone 5 seat. Interested Zone 5 residents need to submit a letter of intention to board clerk Amanda LaChance by Feb.10. Applications must be filed each year and can save qualified homeowners up to $1,320 on their annual property tax bill. To be considered for the tax reduction this year, a homeowner must file their application with the Blaine County Assessor’s Office between January 1 and April 18.

A homeowner who occupies his/her primary dwelling by April 18 qualifies for an exemption of 50 percent of the value of the residence (including up to one acre of land) or $100,000, whichever is less. Taxes are computed on the nonexempt value. A homeowner may also apply for this exemption on their home (not land) if they pay occupancy taxes (new home occupied after Jan. 1 of current tax year). Upon approval of the application. the exemption is continuous as long as the homeowner occupies the property as their primary residence. Upon change of ownership, the new owner must file a new application. There are no income or age restrictions, but you can qualify for an exemption on only one home at a time.

High pressure invades the Wood River Valley this week, making for some sunny and some partly cloudy conditions.

If you are visiting and fishing, the sun is great, but it also means cold winter days. Hand warmers and toe warmers are a great way to make your day on the water more comfortable. Use the hand warmers in the backs of your gloves to keep the blood headed to your fingers warm. Fingerless gloves are a must for productive winter fishing. Picabo Angler uses and sells the Kast brand of fishing gloves. These are by far the best on the market. If you haven’t been fishing due to cold fingers, come see me at the shop and we will fix that!

Midges remain the winter bug the fish are keying on, so make sure you have the usual lineup of flies, including Zebra Midges for subsurface fishing and TieDown Midges for the top.

With a lack of winter precipitation this week, it may be a good time to try branching out and looking at the Lost River and the South Fork of the Boise River—the only caveat being very few anglers have been fishing these places, so we don’t have a clear picture of the fishing, the parking, and access in general. A shovel and some creativity may be needed in some areas.

If you go on the road to fish, please take a friend with you, and ALWAYS tell someone where you are going. Even a benign area may be dangerous in the winter months. This is very true of the canyon areas along the Big Wood River. It may be best to stay out of the area below River Run bridge these days, and even some of the hillsides north of Hailey and south, as well, like Colorado Gulch. There is a lot of avalanche danger in these areas.

Watch the reports for the skiers. If they are being told to stay out of the backcountry due to extreme avalanche danger, you should avoid fishing at the base of these steep-sided mountains.

Since we are on the safety train here, let’s go ahead and mention sunscreen. Wintertime is cold, but the high-altitude rays are still strong and you can still come home with a sunburn even on the coldest day. Cover up from the cold and sun.

argherita Belgioco has many passions, including painting, fashion, tennis, piano and astronomy. The Italian exchange student arrived in the Wood River Valley on Aug. 27, 2016, and will say her goodbyes on Feb. 4.

At Wood River High School, Margherita has carried an ambitious academic course load, including precalculus, U.S. history, French 7, Advanced Placement Physics and Language and Composition, art and botany.

From Bologna, Italy—a sophisticated and ancient mid-sized city— Belgioco applied for an exchange program, but had no say over her destination.

“A family chose me,” she said. “I could have gone anywhere.

That’s the fun part.

“You can do everything and anything in Bologna,” Margherita said. “The point is having time. Sometimes it can be boring because you are doing the same things over and over, so I wanted to come to the U.S. and have a different life.

“I was a little scared when I found out I was going to Idaho. It’s small and there are not a lot of opportunities, but the place doesn’t matter—it’s the people.”

Living in the mountains wasn’t the issue; every year Margherita goes to Austria to hike and ski.

“It was going to be a new experience, so I just decided to get my act together and make the best of it. I knew there would be things to overcome, so I prepared myself psychologically. Making friends turned out to be a little difficult.”

To Margherita, Italians are much more open.

“We like to hug and kiss,” she said with a laugh. “People here are

more closed and can be a little cold, so it’s difficult to get to know them and build relationships.”

But she is primarily a city girl.

“At first I didn’t like it, but now I love it here,” she said. “It’s so quiet and peaceful, like taking a breath of fresh air. It’s a total change of life and that’s what I wanted. Now I have many friends and I’ve made strong ties and I love my host family.”

The beauty of the late summer and fall won her over, too.

“It was amazing—like a painting. I was able to take a lot of photographs.”

Margherita also loves to paint and was able to pursue that passion while she was here.

“I’ve always painted, beginning in elementary school. I was the girl that the teacher asked to make posters.”

Margherita started with hand paints and crayons and then moved into building pieces and painting them.

“Today, I’m into landscapes and whatever I feel like painting. With landscapes, I like the details and like to challenge myself. I’ll paint and then I’ll add to it. It’s all about where to add and to make the painting richer.”

Recently, she painted a landscape that now hangs in the high school.

“It was the hardest and most challenging [art project] of my life.

It took at least a month longer than usual. I used acrylic paint and painted an Idaho landscape. It’s a painting that I will always cherish.”

When I joined 23 other students in Miami as a 19-year-old, the only “black” volunteer on the way to build playground equipment in poor schools in the Andes had to drink from “colored” water dispensers and stay in a separate dormitory.

I plan to see both “Fences” and “Moonlight” by the time this piece is published, and I am pretty sure that I will experience the same regrets mixed with a slight sigh of relief that perhaps I would have had the strength to oppose these injustices if more mature. I so hope that the embracing love of all humanity with which I was raised did infuse my attitudes.

I wouldn’t miss these sources of the cracks in my rose-colored glasses for anything. We all need to acknowledge our individual responsibilities for the mistreatment of others.

However, maybe it’s time I see “La La Land” in plain old glasses while, as always, I experience the joy of cinema.

Idaho and Oregon battle over river issues

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission dismissed a petition Thursday that would have overridden state ability to enforce water quality standards—a right that has been codified by the Idaho Supreme Court. The ruling was a win for Idaho Rivers United and other conservation groups that are seeking better water quality standards at three Idaho Power Co. dams on the Snake River in Hells Canyon.

The petition, filed by Idaho Power Co. on Nov. 23, 2016, asked FERC to preempt state authority over clean water management because Idaho and Oregon have different positions on introduction of anadromous salmon and steelhead. Both states have jurisdiction because the Snake River in Hells Canyon constitutes the state line.

Idaho Power says “the two states do not agree on how to resolve issues regarding fish passage and reintroduction of anadromous fish in tributaries above Hells Canyon Dam; Oregon supports fish passage and reintroduction, and Idaho opposes these measures,” according to FERC’s dismissal order.

IRU executive director Kevin Lewis called the filing by Idaho Power “an attempt to bully the state of Oregon.”

“If this had been granted, it would have squashed Oregon’s ability to regulate its own water quality—to Idaho Power’s benefit,” Lewis said. “For nearly 20 years Hells Canyon relicensing has been unnecessarily dragged out because of Idaho Power’s inability to achieve Clean Water Act certification. That’s not Oregon’s fault.”

Moreover, FERC found Oregon’s fish passage requirements, though still in draft form, are likely legal.

“In addition, we find no basis to presume that a state could not include provisions requiring fish passage and reintroduction as conditions of its water quality certification,” the agency wrote.

The Hells Canyon project consists of three dams and three reservoirs— Brownlee, Oxbow and Hells Canyon—on a 38-mile section of the Snake River. FERC issued a 50-year license for the project in 1955. The license expired on July 31, 2005.

Idaho Power filed its application for a new license in July 2003. Also at that time it filed for Clean Water Act certifications from Idaho and Oregon.

“Currently, Oregon’s draft water quality certification includes conditions that would require fish passage and reintroduction of anadromous fish above Hells Canyon Dam, whereas Idaho’s draft certification includes conditions that would preclude Idaho Power from introducing or reintroducing fish species to Idaho waters without Idaho’s consent,” FERC wrote.

Both Idaho and Oregon have released their draft water quality certifications for public review and comment. The comment periods close Feb. 13 and, presumably, state water quality certification will occur later in 2017.

All Silver Creek students are required, through Big Picture Learning, to do Learning through Internships/Interests, which are also known as LTIs. Last fall, Ciera started interning at The Hunger Coalition’s Bloom Farm in Quigley Canyon, in east Hailey. Ciera has three mentors at her internship: Naomi Spence, Lynea Petty and Megan Schooley. Ciera has great relationships with all three of her mentors and loves her LTI. “I chose The Hunger Coalition for my first LTI,” Ciera said. “I chose this type of internship because I liked the factor of helping out my community. I have always had an interest in plants and outdoorsy projects. There is a wide range of things to do every single day out at the Bloom Farm. One day Lynea and I may be harvesting plants and washing them, and getting the crops ready to go to the warehouse.

Another day I could be working on something totally different with Naomi and Megan, from building cold frames to making an outdoor kitchen. All in all, I chose this LTI because the work being done always interested me, and I’d love to pursue this line of work further.”

Ciera explained that a day at her LTI starts with her arriving at Bloom Farm at 9:30 a.m. every Tuesday. To begin, Ciera and her mentors will meet to discuss the tasks that need to be completed that day. Ciera will get to work immediately and she won’t stop until she is done. On a typical day, she said she most enjoys working in the dirt with the plants or doing hands-on building and constructive projects.

Her next project is to build a root-vegetable washing contraption in the upcoming spring.

s many of you know all too well, The Senior Connection was closed on Jan. 6, 9 and 11 due to weather and unsafe conditions. We have adopted the guidelines used by Blaine County public schools. According to our new Standards and Practices policy, we will be closed on any day that the public schools are closed, when it is because of weather concerns. The Senior Connection and school district don’t make these decisions lightly.

Safety is our main objective, and we don’t want students and seniors waiting in the cold, walking on unsafe surfaces and traveling in buses that may have difficulty operating in the snow and bitter cold.

On cold, snowy days, like those we just experienced, you can find out easily whether or not we’ll be open. School closures are posted in the banner at the bottom of your television screen early in the morning. Local radio stations will announce the closures.

You can check out if the public schools are closed by going to their website, blaineschools.org.

Fortunately, we still were able to deliver Meals on Wheels to our homebound members. In anticipation of the closures, we delivered two days of meals at a time, ensuring that no one went hungry. We also purchased and distributed space heaters for those who needed them.

Through our partnership with Safe Haven Health Care, we

can assist those in need of firewood or light snow shoveling.

The City of Hailey also has a list of students willing to be hired to shovel. You can call the City at (208) 788-9830, ext. 20, for more information.

The American Red Cross has published an excellent booklet, “Winter Storms: The Deceptive Killers.” It’s a preparedness guide, full of essential information on storms, heavy snow, winter flooding, ice and cold. There are statistics, maps, charts and photos that explain the science of cold weather, and instructions on how to stay informed about current weather conditions. We have a stack of these booklets at The Senior Connection, located at 721 South 3rd Avenue in Hailey.

his weekend, Jan. 2829, head to Bellevue’s Minnie Moore Mine for the second annual Klim the Mine Snowmobile Hill Climb.

“If you like winter sports and/ or snowmobiling, snowmobile hillclimb racing is an event to see,” said Bart Butcher, president and race coordinator of Rocky Mountain States Hillclimb Association (RMSHA).

“It is very exhilarating to watch high-horsepower snowmobiles traverse the toughest of hill obstacles through slalom-style gates, trying to be the fastest time through the finish line.”

Last year’s event saw a spectacular turnout of both spectators and racers.

“The general atmosphere is very exciting because of the sound of the engines,” Butcher said. “You feel the energy coming from the racers and all the anticipation. You want to see wrecks, but you also want to see the best ride ever on a tough hill climb.”

“We have no doubt that this year will be an even greater success with the addition of the street party and more vendors on site at the races,” said Melissa Humphreys, sponsorship coordinator. “We’re proud to be part of RMSHA’s circuit.”

“The City of Bellevue has graciously given the use of West Oak Street for a family-friendly public event,” Humphreys noted. “We’ll have music with a live band and DJ, food vendors and even a couple modified snowmachines for people to look at up close. This is our chance to showcase the Valley’s interest and support of this unique event as well as get outside and celebrate the amazing winter we are having this year. Racers will be there to register for the event and mingle with the community.”

Racing events will begin at 8 a.m. at the Minnie Moore Mine,

on Broadford Road west of Bellevue, on Saturday and Sunday morning, ending near sundown.

Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly in layers.

“Spectators should bring chairs so they can sit and be comfortable for a long day of racing and get as close to the action as possible,” said Butcher.

“Warm clothes and boots are always a necessity. The event venue usually has vendors serving food, beverages and adult beverages, but attendees are welcome to bring their own food.”

“And we’ll have a sledding and tubing area open, compliments of Les Schwab, to keep the kids entertained,” added Humphreys.

Fortunately, new greenhouse technology is making food production possible nearly year-round for some local and regional farmers.

Based in Bellevue, Kraay’s Market Garden is one of the newest arrivals on the scene. Owners Sherry and Larry Kraay grow fire-red tomatoes, greens, carrots and baby ginger in their commercial greenhouses, which they deliver—along with fresh food from other local farms and businesses—straight to your door.

Farther north, in Hailey, The Sage School students produce lettuce, spinach, arugula, and kale in their school greenhouse made up of eight 100-square-foot raised beds complete with a radiant heat system to maintain optimal soil temperature. The fresh greens are sold to local restaurants and NourishMe in Ketchum as well as the Wood River Sustainability Center in Hailey through March.

Based on availability, WRSC carries fresh zucchini, squash, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, tomatoes, salad mix, potatoes, onions, carrots and beets from

a variety of local farms from Fairfield to Hagerman. At NourishMe, look for crunchy mixed greens from Kasota Hydroponics in Hazelton along with other regionally grown greens, mixed squash, potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers and eggplant.

This winter, Onsen Farm in Buhl offered its first Winter CSA [Community-Supported Agriculture] with bimonthly delivery to the Wood River Valley. Owners James and Leslee Reed utilize low tunnels and geothermal heat to produce a wide variety of fresh veggies all winter and spring.

Of course, winter food production isn’t always easy, especially in an epic snow year.

Billy Goat Loppet results The 12th annual Sun Valley Ski Club Billy Goat Loppet, sponsored by Backwoods Mountain Sports, was held Saturday, Jan. 21, in a new venue at the Sun Valley Nordic Center. The 10km (skate) course included the Nemesis, Boundary and Trail Creek Loop trails.

“It was a pleasant surprise that after all the snowfall and cold conditions we have had in the last few weeks, to be able to stage the race under picture-perfect sunny skies, excellent snow conditions and a welcome mild temperature was indeed a bonus,” said organizer Jenny Busdon.

As part of its current BIG IDEA project, “Rayguns, Robots, Drones: Technology’s Peril and Promise,” the Sun Valley Center for the Arts will screen the documentary thriller “Zero Days” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum. Released in 2016 and directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, “Zero Days” deals with the frightening–and very real–world of cyberwarfare.

“As we were developing our BIG IDEA project ‘Rayguns, Robots, Drones: Technology’s Peril and Promise,’ the renowned documentarian Alex Gibney was about to release his latest film, ‘Zero Days,’” said Kristine Bretall, Director of Performing Arts at The Center. “The timing of the release of this film meshed perfectly with the project and the concept behind it.

The idea that a computer program designed to take down nuclear facilities ended up backfiring with unforeseen consequences no longer is the stuff of fiction. While chilling, the film gives us insight into what can happen when we set loose new technologies.”

Master Gardeners to offer Victory Gardening class On Thursday, Feb. 2, Master Gardeners will give an introduction to Victory Gardening in the Wood River Valley. The upcoming series of classes and hands-on sessions will be offered from Feb. 27 to May 15.

Idaho Master Gardeners, trained University of Idaho Extension office volunteers, hold certifications on a variety of topics related to plant science, landscaping and urban horticulture.

Each class will focus on how to grow the various vegetables, fruits and berries that local gardeners are successfully producing. The six classes will alternate with optional hands-on workshops.

The class is geared toward beginners and those who want to expand their gardening skills. Speakers and teachers will be local experts and master gardeners familiar with the Wood River Valley’s climate and gardening challenges.

Classes will be held every other Monday at the Community Campus in Hailey, with workshops held at various locations.

Cost for the Victory Gardening class, including materials, is $45.

The fee for additional family members is $5. Scholarships are available.

Art students to present exhibition

“Political Prisoners,” an exhibit of paintings created by art students from Wood River High School, will be on view at the Hailey Public Library for the month of February. A reception will open the exhibit at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2. Visitors are invited to talk with the students about their work.

Inspiration for the “Political Prisoners” paintings came from observing art by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who explored human rights and freedom of expression through a series of site-specific installations on Alcatraz Island, in California, in 2014.

The Chinese government imprisoned Ai for 81 days in 2011 for political activism, among other trumped-up charges.

The WRHS Studio Art class examined a body of work designed by Ai, titled “Trace,” in which he constructed colorful portraits of 176 people from around the world who were imprisoned or exiled because of their beliefs or affiliations. Motivated by the concept and style of Ai Weiwei’s work, students selected political prisoners, and then examined their lives and what events influenced them to become dissidents. The Center to screen Oscar-nominated shorts

Over the course of four evenings in February, the Sun Valley Center for the Arts will screen all of the short films nominated for Academy Awards in 2016 at the Magic Lantern Cinemas at 7 p.m. Feb. 15, 16, 22 and 23.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a “short film” as an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less.

The first two nights of screenings are dedicated to the 2016 Oscar-nominated short films in the animated and “live-action” (fictional content featuring actors) categories. The second two screenings include two different lineups of Oscar-nominated short documentary films.

Hailey Vehicle Recovery Facebook page launched

In this current “share” culture, everything seems to be available just for the asking or, in this case, posting.

The Hailey Vehicle Recovery group launched on Facebook so that the community can help people get their cars out of sticky situations, for free.

The owners of the page have a few words of advice: “If you’re on private property illegally, we will not break laws to get to you. You’ll have to call the authorities, or we can. If you’re intoxicated and trying to get your vehicle back on the road, we won’t help you. We aren’t here to keep you out of jail. We are trying to help people get home, whatever the situation may be. We are willing to work with authorities; i.e., police, fire, any and all rescue teams.”

Building collapses in Bellevue

On Tuesday morning, snow collapsed the roof of a building at 108 Ash Street in Bellevue. The collapsed part of the building was a storage area, according to the Bellevue Marshal’s Office, and was next to The Appliance Company, which didn’t suffer any damage.
