ADVICE FROM THE PROS Tips & tricks from women leaders

BY YANNA LANTZ

I

n the past few years, more focus than ever has been put on women’s rights, their voices, their ambitions, their struggles and, ultimately, their importance in societies globally. Although women garnered well under 50 percent of Time’s “100 Most Influential People in 2015,” women now claim major positions in industries that are not female dominated. Women at the top of their game have offered tips and tricks for their peers in the ecosystem. From advice on taking the plunge and nailing an interview, to moving ahead when the odds are stacked, here’s what they had to say. Cathe Tocher has worked in the financial industry for over three decades and is now the chief investment officer for Great-West Financial where she oversees the deployment of $40-plus billion in assets. Tocher feels times continue to change for the better. While women remain a minority in the workplace, she suggests that women can and should use their relative scarcity to their advantage. “Like it or not, women must hold themselves to a higher standard than the men around them,” Tocher said in an interview with Forbes. “Work harder, Continued TIPS & TRICKS Page 8

REMOTE WORK REQUIRES BALANCE AND BOUNDARIES

lexibility, and more specifically the ability to work from home, is a workplace trend that has garnered interest from a wide range of people seeking the quintessential work-life balance. According to a Gallup survey released earlier this year, 43 percent of employed Americans said they spent at least some time working remotely last year, and this trend is one that some economists say would go a long way toward closing gender gaps. “One of the biggest perks of this job is I don’t need to find childcare,” said Sidnee Hill, a teacher with the Idaho Digital Learning Academy. Before beginning teaching online this school year, Hill was in a traditional classroom setting and said that childcare was her greatest obstacle. Hill lives with her husband, Brian, and two young children, 4-year-old Sage and 3-month-old Raleigh. Working remotely gives her the best of both worlds—time with her children and

a career she is passionate about. She teaches agricultural education to high school students. Hill multitasks; she grades papers while eating a quick breakfast. She then focuses on her children until about 11 a.m. when her youngest naps and she can sneak in a few hours of work. She breaks for lunch, and then, depending on her children’s moods, she can work more. If they’re happy, they’ll play independently, but if they need more attention, work will be postponed until they’re in bed. After that she may continue working, sometimes until 1 a.m., depending on the workload. “I’d say that happens twice a week and that’s usually because I want to spend more time with my kids during the day,” Hill said. “I give up something for someContinued BALANCE & BOUNDARIES Page 8

lee Marsters is the owner of Antique Alley—a fun, funky, delightful antique and treasure store, located at 151 West Sun Valley Road in Ketchum—which has now been open for over three years. Alee also has Spud Sack Gallery, inside Antique Alley... specializing in framed vintage potato sacks, Idaho Spud T-shirts, and vintage potato sack graphic pillows. The owner of the newly remodeled Ketchum Hotel just purchased a dozen framed sacks for their lobby. “I can hardly wait to see them hung!” said Marsters. “I love it. It’s my happy place. Both tourists and locals come in and say I’ve added color to the corner,” Alee says. “They drive by hollering ‘Way to go, cowgirl!’ or ‘I love your store!’” Locals love to shop for unique birthday or Christmas presents. And you can’t find a better place to pick up a “white elephant” for your holiday parties. Decorators also shop here to find the perfect finishing touches for houses—skis, snowshoes, art and more. Alee is not new to local businesses or events, as she is the founder and promoter of the Hailey Antique Market—now in its 25th year—and the Hailey Holiday Show. Marsters is also a hairdresser at Changes Salon located in the Perry’s building in Ketchum, formally at Touch of Class in Trail Creek Village. Alee has lived in the Valley for 28 years and has been an avid antique collector most of her life. In her spare time, she enjoys horseback riding, spending time with her dogs, local musical events like Ketch’em Alive and Wicked Wednesdays at The Spud, and snowmobiling. Antique Alley is open from noon to 6 p.m., closed on Monday, except in the summer. Marsters can be reached at (208) 720-1146.

ari Larsen moved to the Wood River Valley in 1968. With a growing desire to have her own salon, she established Cari’s Hair Care in 1975 in a small home salon in the China Gardens subdivision in Hailey. When she outgrew her home salon, and with a growing clientele, Cari relocated to Hailey’s Main Street, and then later to her current location in Centennial Station at 400 N. Main Street. She now employs others and continues working behind the chair. Cari also added an essential-oils line to her retail product offering, along with other up-to-date professional hair and body care lines. During the growing and building of her business, Cari and her husband Dwain raised three sons, all of whom graduated from Wood River High School and have gone on to successful careers in their chosen fields. Cari is proud to say that she has now served the Valley for 40 years. In addition to hair and salon services, Cari is also a licensed realtor and is an associate with Sunland Investments. Cari believes a person should have a deep desire and passion for what they do. “It’s not just doing the hair and services that keep me going,” Cari says. “It’s the opportunity to serve the community and to have these lifelong relationships with people I really love and care about. Some of my dearest friends sit in my chair weekly.” There is always something new and exciting brewing at Cari’s Hair Care & Day Spa.

Putting Off D Dear Dr. C.: I can’t get my husband to go the dentist unless he has a toothache. How do I convince him he needs regular exams and cleanings? This is one of life’s great mysteries. It’s not a Mars-or-Venus thing as much as men seem to be less motivated than women to have regular care. Consequently, many men need a compelling reason to get necessary care. Often it is one of the following:

e believe at the Senior Connection that it takes a multitude of diverse people, men and women, all different and unique in their own way, to connect seniors with essential services, meaningful programming, their peers and the local community to foster purposeful and passion-filled lives. But today we celebrate the women who make up a large part of our team (including our countless volunteers and contractors). According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 2013-2014, across all age demographics, women outnumbered men in the percentage of people that were formal eldercare providers. It is becoming more common to see the roles reversed; women as doctors, and men as nurses, etc. However, women still lead in the industry. This might be because women statistically outlive men, and many women prefer certain services to be performed by

KIM MAZIK, PHYSICAL THERAPIST

im Mazik, owner of Hailey Sport & Spine Physical Therapy, focuses on empowering clients to reclaim their active lifestyles and athleticism, no matter what their age. Kim uses evidence-based techniques to guide people through the pain of an injury or post-surgery back to their full potential. Kim’s philosophy is to “treat the problem, not just the symptom,” which has led her to pursue further education in the use of a comprehensive exam known as Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA). Kim explains: “This system creates a more pattern-specific perspective of how each individual client moves in response to their injury or anatomy versus merely looking at a medical diagnosis. I treat the whole personand not just their torn ACL, for example.”

This assessment, coupled with Kim’s training as an orthopedic manual therapist, assures accurate diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal pain and movement dysfunction. Kim’s approach to treatment is holistic and eclectic, blending joint manipulation, massage therapy, yoga, Pilates, ATM2 and other functional therapeutic exercise, including neuromuscular techniques. Additionally, several years ago Kim recognized the need in the Valley for a physical therapist to address TMJ and women’s health issues. She obtained education to treat pre/postpartum pelvic and low-back pain, as well as urinary incontinence. Training at The Center for Sleep Apnea & TMJ to treat TMJD allows Kim to work closely with the area’s dentists to treat jaw, headache and facial pain. Outside the clinic, Kim pursues

other passions, including whitewater rafting, cycling, hiking/ backpacking, and gardening. Mention this article when you book your appointment at (208) 788-6312 and receive a free assessment. Experience for yourself why Kim Mazik was voted Best of the Valley!

Balance and Boundaries Continued from Page 2

thing else.” Seasoned remote-worker Natalie Garrett, an independent contractor and consultant for product management and marketing in the technology industry, pushed hard in the beginning. “I took it upon myself to work all the time because I loved the company,” she said. “I loved what we did. It made me really happy to do that for a while, but that happiness wore off because I realized I didn’t have a personal life. So even though it was really fulfilling, I had zero boundaries and I would work all the time.” Garrett lives with her husband, Mike, and dog, Tungsten, and has had a flexible schedule for the last three years. Over time, she has learned to set boundaries. “Once you set them, you have to remember that you have to reset them over and over—it’s endless,” Garrett said. Things come up all the time, whether it’s the doorbell, chatting with the dog trainer, or visitors. Garrett has to constantly remind those around her that just because she is at home doesn’t mean she’s not working. Garrett’s also mindful of household errands and chores. “There’s a certain level of guilt, honestly, because I do have flexibility and I don’t commute an hour and a half to work like my husband does,” she said. “I do have time, but it’s also about creating the boundaries that respect my time, and part of it too is making sure that I don’t resent him for taking advantage of me. I create those boundaries so I feel we have a balance give-and-take in our relationship.” Hill has office hours so that students can contact her over the phone if they have questions or need extra help. During that time her husband takes their eldest to a weekly church function so she can concentrate. “I’m part-time, so I can only work 20 hours a week, but when the kids are there, I’m not as effective a worker and so it takes me longer to do anything,” Hill said. On the other hand, Hill regards her husband’s situation as freer in a way, since when he comes home, he leaves work behind. “But I do recommend it,” she said. “I get to have a career and be a mom. Even though it’s harder, I like being able to have something besides Dora the Explorer to put my mind to.” Garrett said that having her own office in their home has been a huge factor in her success, conjuring images of Virginia Woolf, who said, “a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction” when asked to speak on the topic of women and fiction in October 1928 at Newnham College and Girton College. These talks were expanded and printed in 1929 into one of Woolf’s most important and influential books, “A Room of One’s Own.” “I am the kind of person who needs cleanliness and order and space in order to do my job,” Garrett said. “Having my own office and the ability to look however I want it to look, how I set my computer up, all of those little things add up.” Both Garrett and Hill say what they miss the most while working remotely is mentoring in person. “I miss supervising people,” Garrett said. “I love mentoring young professionals in my office position. I have some opportunities with my company in Canada, but

it’s all remote, so it’s really different to have video conferences than it is to be in person.” “If I didn’t have kids at home I’d be in a face-to-face classroom somewhere because I do miss the kids,” Hill said. “Talking to them, being a mentor. A couple of kids want to be ranchers when they grow up or they’re in Future Farmers of America, so they email me occasionally and say, ‘Hey, what do you think?’ which I love because it’s a little bit like a face to face.” Isolation can play a factor in the day to day, Garrett said. “When I lived in Colorado I had this amazing community, a group of women friends that were like sisters. But now that I’ve moved to a new place, I have a couple connections here, but it’s not my place.” Garrett makes it a point to sign up for networking events and has gone to some political meetings in her new town, but says that the effort feels forced. “I make plans to work out of a coffee shop or go to a networking event or even go to Target in the middle of the day so I can talk to a human being,” she said with a laugh. For the right opportunity, Garrett would go back to an office setting, but it would have to have some flexibility, as she doesn’t feel she could do the 9 to 5 again. Ideally, she believes the best balance is like a position she had in the past, a startup that met in the office three times a week and had two remote days. tws

more effectively and efficiently, and be more prepared. If you want a promotion, you need to put together supporting data. Assess the market rate, talk to competitors, but get very clear about your impact on the bottom line.” Sara Mohammadi, the founder of Eventbox, stresses the importance of identity. “My most important piece of advice to any woman is don’t think about yourself just as a woman—you are not just a woman, you are a startup entrepreneur,” Mohammadi said in an interview with Entrepreneur. “That supersedes any other identity that you have… The minute you put another identity above that it becomes a limitation for yourself: limitation in your own mindset and in your own perception of your abilities.” Tammi Leader Fuller is the chief empowerment officer for Campowerment, a “reignite your life” camp that has served several thousand women. She believes in the power of networking. “Never underestimate the power of networking, at any age or career level,” Fuller said in an interview with Forbes. “Even if you switch career paths, continue to tap into your past contacts.” Monika Machon recently retired from her position as treasurer of American International Group. She was an investment professional for over 30 years, including global head of asset management and chief investment officer at AIG. While Monika never thought of being a woman as a negative, she did notice plenty of times that other people thought it was. “Learn as much as you can about your bosses and colleagues and find out the best ways to work with them,” Machon said in an interview with BizzyChicks. “Always prepare for an interview by finding out as much as you can about the company and, if possible, the department and the person hiring you. Try to put yourself in their shoes and think about what you bring to the party.” Kristine Lasam, the founder of the branding company Pink Entropy, highlights the importance of perseverance. “Don’t be afraid to knock on doors,” Lasam said in an interview with Entrepreneur. “If someone says ‘No’—no means next… trust your intuition. If you’ve done your homework, trust your intuition. It is when I don’t trust my instincts that I get in trouble.”
