BOULDER MOUNTAIN TOUR TO TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY

“We have such great volunteers and volunteer committees,” Zarkos said. “I support what they do. They make it work.”

On Saturday, Feb. 2, during the BMT, Galena Lodge and Bigwood Bread are providing soup, bread and hot drinks for all racers. Girls on the Run volunteers will be serving these items and there will be a warming tent available in the event of unfavorable weather.

“Anyone who volunteers is invited to an appreciation party on Feb. 13 at The Limelight which includes a free raffle for a Blaine County ski pass for next year,” Zarkos said.

The BMT is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes the BMT ski race and supports the sport of cross-country skiing. It is entirely volunteer-based and is supported by more than 350 local Wood River Valley individuals and businesses.

“I feel like the Boulder offers something for everyone,” Zarkos said. “Whether you are an elite racer, a parent joining in with a child, or just going with your friends, there is something for everyone in this race.”

he 46th annual Zions Bank Boulder Mountain Tour (BMT) will be held Saturday, Feb. 2, with 200 volunteers on hand to welcome 1,000 racers.

The race day that consists of a 34k and 15k is dedicated to longtime Ketchum resident and three-time Olympian, Jon Engen, who died in April of 2018 from pancreatic cancer.

This popular portion of the Sun Valley Nordic Festival draws racers from all over the map and will include visitors from Bozeman, Mont., this year, where Engen, a dedicated ambassador and respected competitor in the cross-country sport, attended college.

“It’s such a wonderful tradition and it’s great that people support it year after year,” said race director Jody Zarkos. “It makes it what it is.”

The Boulder Mountain Tour starts at 9 a.m. at Galena Lodge, 23 miles north of Ketchum on the Senate Meadows loop. The course crosses Highway 75 south of Galena Lodge and continues down the Harriman Trail, finishing at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) Headquarters. There are moderate but challenging climbs in the course and the terrain mellows at the halfway point.

Spectators can catch the elite-class finish shortly after 11 a. m. across from the SNRA headquarters. The 15k Half Boulder begins at Baker Creek at 11:30 a.m.

Racers in the men’s pack include Olympian Andrew Newell and 2018 champion Mat Gelso, as well as 2018 bronze medalist Bryan Cook. The women’s competitors include Liz Stephens, a U.S. Ski Team member for more than a decade; Annie Pokorny, a former Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation (SVSEF) Gold Team racer; and Sloan Storey, SVSEF alumni, coach and former captain at the University of Utah, as well as Emily Williams, SVSEF coach and alumni, and 2017 silver medalist Erika Flowers.

“It is a very competitive, elite field this year,” Zarkos said.

There are demos and expos, too.

“New this year is our Regs and Dregs on Jan. 31, a citizen race class—where wearing a costume is always an option—and our kickoff party with live music at the Limelight Hotel in Ketchum,” Zarkos said.

The schedule is as follows: Wednesday, Jan. 30, all race entries are eligible for a free pre-race clinic with SVSEF Gold Team racers at Sun Valley Resort; Thursday, Jan. 31, Nordic Town USA Sprints feature a “Regs and Dregs” for citizen racers at Simplot Field, followed by a kickoff party at The Limelight with live music from 5:30-8 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 1, is race bag pick-up at The Limelight from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 2, the BMT starts at 10 a.m. and later that evening the BMT awards and party at The Limelight from 5:30-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, is “Demo Day” with a barbeque at Sun Valley Nordic Center.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., “Ski the Rails” is a free cross-country ski event from Ketchum to Hailey on the Wood River Trail.

“Boulder is the capstone of the Sun Valley Nordic Festival,” Zarkos said.

Approximately 200 volunteers are the backbone of the BMT event and Zarkos credits them along with the board for the success of the BMT.

HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR TO BUILD ‘TINY HOUSE’

S

ilver Creek High School senior Sierra Stern has taken on a tiny personal project with huge repercussions. And, with help from the community, she hopes to be enjoying tiny-house living by the end of the school year.

Every year, high school seniors are to complete personal projects in which they explore a topic of their choosing, displaying a product or event to show what they have learned. These projects can be research-based or hands-on.

Wanting to learn more about architecture and design, Stern decided to build the currently trendy, environmentally conscious tiny house.

Building a tiny house will be a learning experience and a childhood dream of a cottage-in-the-woods-cometrue at the same time.

“Not only is it a test of my strength and skill as a project manager, but when it is finished, I know I’ll be over the moon with a newfound energy to take on the world as I know it,” Stern said. “If I can build a house from nothing, what can’t I do?”

In the popular tradition of naming tiny houses, Stern took the first steps and has chosen the name “Kintsugi” for her home. The name comes from the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery.

“It is meant to show the power of resilience—something to be remembered and shared instead of covered and forgotten,” Stern said of the name. “I believe in that philosophy with the whole of my heart, and want to show others that, regardless of their past and present struggles, they can rise up and work hard to make their lives better than they were without erasing who they are.”

With help and mentorship from the local community, Stern’s personal project plans are coming to reality and moving along.

“Already, in the first few months of this project, I have learned more about architecture and construction than I thought I’d ever know in my whole life,” Stern said.

Jolyon Sawrey, of Vital ink Environmental Architecture, is Stern’s mentor and is also lending a hand with helping to obtain donations and making connections with other contractors.

Levi Sali, of L.W. Builders LLC, is also giving his time as construction manager of the project.

“I am extremely grateful to my mentors for helping me so extensively in my project, and giving me the knowledge and confidence to push forward with my dreams,” Stern said.

Some of Stern’s current goals for the project include learning and exploring the different skills and crafts needed in a tiny-house build. She will be hands-on through the entirety of the project. She plans to live in the tiny house throughout the summer before leaving for college.

When asked about her future, Stern said, “I’m not sure where my life is headed quite yet, but the knowledge of my experience and determination on such a project, as well as the finished product, is proof enough that, sooner or later, I’ll have an even bigger, more ambitious project to tackle.”

Construction of the tiny house is set to begin in the next few weeks, with a completion date by the end of the school year, possibly sooner.

YOUNG ADULT NOVEL IS SET IN SUN VALLEY

ome people are born with a novel idea, some get there after a lot of living.

Pocatello native Stella J. Raasch, who is celebrating the publication of her first young-adult fantasy novel based in Sun Valley, called “18th Winter,” is the latter.

Raasch has had a versatile career that includes eight years in the Air Force Security Forces, a degree in psychology, work in social services, as a freelance writer for a pet magazine with a technical degree in canine nutrition, and owner of

a retail store for dogs.

A weak economy forced the closing of her business and sent her back to school, this time for nursing. While in between graduation from Bellin College, in Bellevue, Wisc., and securing her first nursing position, the idea of the legend of the Cyokiana struck.

“I was just sitting at the computer one day and threw a bunch of ideas down,” Raasch said, “centered around a young girl and two dogs that possessed a unique and intricate bond.” The characters resembled her own life with her dogs, Raasch said.

The choice to depict Sun Valley as the setting stemmed from Raasch’s childhood recollections of outdoor activities here. She spent many hours in Stanley and at Redfish Lake.

“I wanted a town in the mountains that was an active town,” she said. “It was a spot I have fond memories of as a child growing up.”

The novel leads the reader on an emotional journey with main character Collette who, like Raasch, loves skiing and snowshoeing and canine companionship, but whose simple pursuits are complicated by self-reflection, legend, magic and vengeance.

“Collette relates to me in so many ways

it almost hurts,” Raasch said.

From story conception to publishing, Raasch dedicated five-and-a-half years to writing her novel. She took breaks from time to time, the longest being nine months.

“It was a struggle,” she admitted.

“There were so many times when I wanted to give up.”

Her final inspirational push came in the form of a movie that gave her the boost she needed.

“I watched a movie called ‘Before Disney,’ and how Walt Disney started out,” Raasch said. “He just kept falling, and falling and falling,” she said. “But he didn’t give up.”

Raasch’s advice to anyone struggling with writing is to take breaks, but stay focused, seek out a professional opinion and lean into something that perpetually motivates you.

“It’s always about dedicating the time,” she said. “If it is that important to you, don’t give up!”

Raasch has also worked as a gastroenterology nurse, a CVAD nurse, and currently performs the pharmacology review for a healthcare organization in Aurora, Colo.

Her ambitions for the sale of the book include a second book, as well as starting

a college scholarship fund to aid single parents and adults seeking career changes.

he City of Carey, population 615, is more akin to a family than to a city of independent parts. The citizens of Carey are highly involved and committed to building a balanced workforce of industrial and agricultural influence here in the Wood River Valley.

During an interview, Mayor Randy Patterson, now in his third term as mayor, shared that while the work is plenty, the workers are few in Carey.

In 2018, the city had a record number of building permits applied for and will be downsizing its nine zoning districts into four.

“This has helped slow drivers down a lot,” Patterson said.

They also received a different grant for new playground equipment and movement of the volleyball courts to Carey City Park.

This year marks the 100th-year anniversary since Carey’s inception as a town. Patterson and the City Council are not certain what their celebration will look like, but they will likely capitalize on the existing annual community picnic, which takes place on the last Wednesday in June.

Carey also has a newly formed Chamber of Commerce to assist in community development.

The Center To Present Oscar-Nominated Short Films

The Sun Valley Center for the Arts will hold a four-day screening of all of the short films nominated for the 2019 Academy Awards.

The “Oscar Shorts” screenings, which are presented as part of The Center’s popular film series, will take place on Feb. 13, 14, 20 and 21, at 4:30 and 7 p.m. at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum.

A “short film” is defined by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less.

The first two days of screenings are dedicated to Oscar-nominated short films in the live-action (fictional content featuring actors) and animated categories. The second set of screenings includes two different lineups of Oscar-nominated short documentary films.

Patrons should consult sunvalleycenter.org for detailed information about which short films will be shown and the nature of their content before they will be screened.

Tickets for each day of screenings are $10 for members of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and $12 for nonmembers, and they may be purchased in advance through The Center’s box office or website.

THE “WEEKLY” FISHING REPORT FOR JANUARY 30 - FEBRUARY 5, FROM PICABO ANGLER

F

ebruary is a great month for winter fishing in the Sun Valley/Picabo area.

The Midge hatches are still present, the Streamer fishing is still fantastic, and the weather is making winter travel easy for now. Take advantage of the conditions and get out on the water. Low pressure should come in this weekend, and with a little snowfall the fishing should be off-the-charts good.

Silver Creek is fishing great with Streamers. Duck-hunting season has ended and the Creek is really quiet again. It seems the closer you fish to Picabo, the better the fishing. The more turbid the water is and the more cloud cover we have, the better the fishing, as well.

Picabo Angler does have some rarely fished private water available for a small rod fee if you are feeling extra adventurous. The weekend with the cloud cover should be really good. Remember to fish bright colors on bright days and darker colors on darker days. Be sure to stop by the shop if you come down to fish. Our own Christian Reid is tying up some incredible bugs to fish. He can get you fresh patterns and point you toward some great fishing.

The Big Wood should fish well this week as we move into February. It’s time to start looking out for the Little Black Stoneflies as well. You can see these bigger winter/spring bugs running around on the snowy banks on the warmest days. If you see them, try imitating them with Price Nymphs or Zug Bugs.

Swinging these nymphs close to the bank will produce strikes, as these aquatic insects crawl from the center of the river to the banks to reproduce. If you only see Midges this week, stick with Brassies, Zebra Nymphs and Tie-Down Midges. If you see neither insect, then try Streamer fishing!

The Lost and the South Fork of the Boise are open and anglers have been sparse on both rivers. The reports are minimal.

Watch the weather if you go this weekend. Driving conditions may not be optimal.

If you do make it to either river, we are using all the same winter patterns that we use on the Big Wood and Silver Creek.

The Streamer fishing may not be on par, but the dry-fly fishing and the Nymphing should be excellent.

No matter where you fish this week, take a friend and be sure to tell someone where you’re going.

“Oh boy! Here we are. Look at this big space for me to run. I hope Mom brought treats, too. It’s so fun to play that ‘come’ game where she calls my name, and when I get to her she gives me treats. I love that game so much.

“Oh no! What is happening? There are three dogs headed my way—all bigger than me. They are barking madly. They have their hackles up. What did I do to make them want to charge me? I am so afraid! What should I do? I don’t know what to do. I am so afraid!”

“They just want to say hello,” yells their owner.

My mom says, “Please call your dogs! I have a puppy that is very afraid of your dogs barking and hackling at her.”

“They’re friendly!” the owner yells back.

“This is not a friendly way for a dog to approach a puppy,” Mom says.

“Oh no! They are on top of me! I am going to roll on my back to let them know I am no threat. But wait. All three of them are on top of me! One is biting my neck! I am so scared! I think I might get killed! I am going to stand up and nip at them to make them go away. Leave me alone! Please!!! Leave me alone!!!!”

periences, especially here where there are so many places for our dogs to enjoy the outdoors. With this freedom and the beautiful surroundings comes a responsibility when we take our dogs with us.

Please recognize social dog behavior and unsocial dog behavior. A dog that charges other dogs is not being friendly; it is bullying the other dog it is charging. Recognize that behavior for what it is and teach your dog to come when it is called, before the bullying starts. Do not make excuses for your dog’s behavior by calling it “friendly” when it is not.

When you have a puppy, the last place you want to go is somewhere that much larger dogs you do not know are allowed to run free. Puppies should be exposed to older

dogs that have good manners with puppies— not all older, larger dogs like puppies.

If you are going to have a dog that you allow to run loose, be sure your dog deserves that freedom with good behavior so other dogs and people are not injured in the process. Dog freedom is a privilege earned by good behavior, not a right. Take time to teach your dog right from wrong.

t has always been a desire of man or woman to explore remote areas, to go where no one else has gone, to be the first or, if not the first, to attempt a new route or a new method. Recently, this held true with the first unsupported solo trek across Antarctica—a magnificent feat—by the 33-year-old Colin O’Brady.

Terminology for untrammeled snow is fascinating. In ski parlance, on a powder day one can lay down first tracks. Long lines form to be the earliest up the mountain. And then, later, after the run, one looks down from the chairlift to observe if the figure-eights made by the edges of the skis are symmetrical.

Years ago, I happened to be in New York City during a blizzard. I remember walking down the middle of Fifth Avenue by Central Park—not a car or a soul in sight—and making fresh footsteps! I looked back in delight at my tracks, marveling that I could be the “first” along Fifth Avenue.

After a snowstorm, we can be a pioneer.

We can forge new territory. Pristine snow gives us the opportunity to be the first “explorer.” Placing your foot deep within the snow and seeing the indentations emerge one after another is exhilarating.

Studying the large expanse of snowy ground, I tentatively lift my leg and lower it into the snow. My leg descends and descends until the snow comes to my upper thigh. I

or the record, I am not a birder. On one hand, this is not true. I am deeply fascinated by birds. They are an ongoing and seemingly endless wellspring of curiosity. And they do incredible things, like fly, annually, from Antarctica to the North Pole and back. On the other hand, I am not a birder’s birder. I don’t schedule special birding trips. My almost immediate answer to any bird ID question is “I have no idea.”

I have working familiarity with about 50 birds, most of which are species like magpies, geese and robins. Despite all of this, I love birds because, amongst other things, they have all of the mystery associated with something wild and alive that we can get close to, even if we can’t fully understand them. And they surprise me.

So it was on Sunday, January 13, that I found myself walking along Indian Creek. You might remember this day, too, because it was as close to perfect as it gets. We had snow that week. There was no wind and there were no clouds. The sky was pure blue, and whatever atmospheric condition there is that makes contrails disappear was in full effect.

I was standing next to my favorite bend in the stream—a place where the water carves out a little pool, where watercress creeps out from the bank in a mat, and where a break in the willows allows the sun to ignite the open stretch as though highlighting something quintessential. Add to this a bird—in this case, a Virginia rail, in full adult health and plumage.

I knew right away this was a rail, even though I have never seen one. It was unmistakable—in body shape, in behavior, in habitat, in markings.

The bird was working the duckweed and cress and moving in and out of the shallows, all the while lit up by the sun as though it wanted to be painted.

Then, I stood up and scared the bird enough that it moved into the protection of the willows and disappeared. And because it was a wild bird, it was gone.

No amount of staring, standing or hoping brought it back. It left something behind, though—a residue of awe and wonder. And a thousand questions, the first of which was, “What

in tarnation was that bird doing here, now?” It was like seeing a duck in your living room—all of the parts of the scene make sense independently, but seeing them together is weird. There was something else, too—a feeling.

Arthur C. Clarke said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Birds have been around for over 100 million years, roughly 1,000 times as long as humans. There is a refined simplicity in them—in all of nature—that is indistinguishable from magic. For me, it is possible to believe in this magic.

What makes this so powerful is precisely the fact that, ultimately, it is not understandable. This is incomprehensibility on the other side of complexity. It is neither science, nor religion, although it has elements of both.

Right now I call this “The World I Can Never Know.” For me, it emerges invariably and almost always in the little things. A willow leaf bud. A tiny insect crawling across the snow. A mourning cloak butterfly in the end of winter. And in this case, a Virginia rail eating duckweed on a Sunday afternoon.

Family Of Woman Film Festival To Host Special Photo Exhibition

The 12th annual Family of Woman Film Festival has partnered with Dysturb, a group of photojournalists, writers and artists presenting global issues with news-image murals in public places, to bring a unique photographic exhibition to The Community Library and other locations in Ketchum, Monday, Feb. 25, through Sunday, March 3.

The images are based on a campaign with UNFPA, the United Nations agency for reproductive health and rights, featuring a new generation of young women leaders who were born into communities that traditionally practice female genital mutilation (FGM), and have since become champions to end this deeply entrenched manifestation of gender equality.

In a press release from the festival, Dysturb operates independently from conventional news publishing channels by taking the stories to the streets.

This media movement pastes mural-sized blowups in public places of news images from photojournalists around the world, bringing attention to subjects like climate change, women’s issues and the refugee crisis.

The portraits in the exhibition are larger-than-life size, but UNFPA has allowed the festival to present a smaller-scale exhibition.

On Monday, Feb. 25, the library will hold a free screening of “Mrs. Goundo’s Daughter,” originally shown in 2010.

The festival runs from Monday, Feb. 25, to Sunday, March 3, with films at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum. This year’s theme is “Women Still Waiting for Change,” with five documentary films and one dramatic film each providing an important perspective on the lives of women.

Company Of Fools To Present ‘4000 Miles’

Company of Fools will present the final mainstage play of its 23rd theatre season with a production of Amy Herzog’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated “4000 Miles,” running from Feb. 13–March 2 at the Liberty Theatre in Hailey.

The story begins after 21-year-old Leo suffers a major loss while on a cross-country bike trip and seeks solace from his feisty 91-year-old grandmother, Vera, in her West Village apartment, according to a recent news release from Company of Fools. Over the course of a single month, these unlikely roommates infuriate, bewilder and ultimately reach each other.

The New York Times called it “a funny, moving, altogether wonderful drama.”

The cast features company artist Jana Arnold and guest artists Jessi Zhang, Adam Turck and Maggie Horan. Company stage manager K.O. Ogilvie, scenic designer Joe Lavigne, costume designer Elizabeth Weiss Hopper and production assistant Chris Henderson round out the effort, which will be directed by Gary Hopper.

ood River High School senior Mario Macias is all about the footwork.

Macias won the title of All-Great Basin Boys Soccer Conference Player of the Year in 2017 and Times-News Boys Soccer Player of the Year in 2018—both honors scored without making a single goal all season.

A defenseman and team player, Macias led the Wolverines toward winning the 2018 state championship title.

“I was more productive that whole year,” Macias said. “And the entire team was—not just in the game but outside of the Wood River High School senior Mario Macias was named All-Great game, too.”

Macias also was selected as one of only four players from the state of Idaho to be nominated for the All-American Boys Soccer Team this year.

“I didn’t make the final cut,” Macias said, “but it was an honor to even be one of the four selected.”

Macias is enrolled in College English, Advanced Placement Government, Strength & Conditioning, Video Production and Art. “I really like VideoPro because I’m learning how to edit and get good angles of video footage,” Macias said.

Macias hopes to continue taking classes learning more about video and photo next year at Spokane Community College, where he also plans to major in business. Spokane Community College is gaining four from the WRHS varsity soccer team.

“There are four of us that decided to go to the same school,” Macias said. “Three of us have been playing together since elementary school and the fourth moved here from El Salvador and has played with us for three years.”

The powerhouse of players plans to sign contracts to attend Spokane Community College and continue to grow their ability to see the field and support each other in their respective positions.

“It’s just better because we know our crew,” Macias said.

Macias glides around campus in shoes featuring the famous outline of Michael Jordan flying through the air dunking a basketball. His favorite pair is the Jordan 6 Alternates, a retro-looking basketball shoe with a raised ankle and a futuristic cut in all white with a red tongue and red highlights on the sole. Macias treats his Jordans like collectors’ items, and wears his favorite pairs the least to keep them clean.

His love for the famous baller’s line of footwear turned into a personal project. Personal projects are required for graduation. They are a deep dive into a specific area of interest.

Macias is currently making a 3-foot-by-3-foot storage wooden shoebox to house 16 pairs of shoes.

Macias says he is all about setting goals for himself and holding himself accountable to work toward those specific goals, but he has had some encouragement along the way.

“If I can just say anything, it’s that what’s important to me is my family,” Macias said. “They’re so helpful, and even at my worst, if I screw up, they’re there for me.” tws

Idaho Power Biologist: Snake River Water Quality Improving The Snake River supports southern Idaho’s economy, from agriculture to industry to energy production. Human use has impacted the river for more than a century. A news release from Idaho Power states that recent efforts to improve water quality in the Snake are starting to pay off, according to an Idaho Power biologist who plans to present his findings Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality’s annual water quality workshop.

Jesse Naymik, resource scientist leader, will report that statistically significant decreases in organic material and nutrients, such as phosphorous, may be linked to an increase in the amount of oxygen in water in the Hells Canyon Complex reservoirs.

Registration for the three-day workshop began at noon on Tuesday at Boise State University’s Jordan Ballroom. Naymik’s presentation is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. Idaho Power biologist David Blew will discuss water-quality monitoring on the Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer Thursday, Jan. 31, at 9:30 a.m.

On Wednesday morning, Jan. 30, Christy Meyer from The Freshwater Trust will present on the organization’s data collection and management tools for watershed restoration programs. The Freshwater Trust has been working closely with Idaho Power on the utility’s long-term program designed to improve water quality in the Middle Snake River.

he Banff Mountain Film Festival, one of the most prestigious mountain film festivals in the world, takes to the road each year following the festival held every fall in Banff, Alberta, Canada.

For the 19th year, the tour will make its annual landfall in Ketchum, for three nights—Feb. 2, 4 and 5. This is one stop of 550 in more than 40 countries across the globe. The films this year touch on culture, travel, sport and also human interest.

“This Mountain Life: Coast Range Traverse” concerns a woman and her daughter who set out on a six-month ski traverse of the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, from Squamish to Skagway. Over the course of their journey, they learn about each other while ski traversing, bushwhacking and foraging rivers.

“For the Love of Mary” follows the story of 97-year-old George Etzweiler, who began running as a way of saving his own life. Overweight, out of shape and going downhill fast, he vowed to turn things around and to be there for his beloved Mary, whom he married in 1942. Almost 50 years after he started running, he still runs and competes, now to honor his wife

Among the more gasp-inducing of the films is “Rogue Elements: Corbet’s Couloir” in which skis are traded for mountain bikes to leap into the icy, infamous couloir in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Another is the film “Skier vs. Drone” in which Olympic bronze medalist ski racer Victor Muffat-Jeandet actually races a drone in the classic battle of man versus a very high-tech machine.

One of the more charming entries is the Spanish animated documentary, “Viacruxis.” Marcel and Andrezj are a mountain-

eering team who, despite their different temperaments, make a great team. Now they face their biggest challenge: reaching the virgin summit of the highest mountain. In order to achieve this, they will have to overcome formidable obstacles and suffer hardships.

As in years past, a portion of the proceeds from the event will go to support the Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center, which will also hold a raffle each night.

ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE: HOW YOU CAN HELP

ntibiotics have saved millions of lives by killing dangerous bacteria. But, over the years, many bacteria have grown resistant to antibiotics, resulting in more serious illnesses, longer hospitalization and recovery, and more expensive treatments. Illnesses that were once easily treatable with antibiotics now become dangerous infections—more than 2 million infections in the U.S. each year, resulting in 23,000 deaths.

How did this happen? Antibiotic resistance has been with us since the first decade after penicillin was discovered, and for many years new drugs outpaced resistance. Today, however, the development of new antibiotics is at an all-time low.

Add in overuse, people not finishing prescriptions, poor hygiene and sanitation, poor infection control in hospitals and nursing homes, and overuse in livestock and fish farming, and you have a serious global health problem.

What can you do?

• Don’t take antibiotics for a viral infection, such as a cold or flu. Antibiotics work on bacteria (such as group A streptococcus, which cause strep throat), not viruses (which cause most sore throats). A watch-and-wait approach may help spare antibiotics.

• Don’t pressure your health-

care provider to give you an antibiotic prescription. Ask him or her for advice on how to treat symptoms.

• Practice good hygiene to avoid bacterial infections: wash hands, follow safe food practices.

• Make sure you and your children receive recommended vaccinations.

• Use antibiotics only as prescribed: Take the correct daily dosage and complete the entire course of treatment—don’t stop as soon as you feel better.

• Don’t take leftover antibiotics for a later illness.

• Don’t take antibiotics prescribed for another person Remember to get your flu vaccine to help you stay healthy through the season! Flu vaccination can reduce flu illness, doctors’ visits and missed work and school due to the flu, as well as prevent flu-related hospitalizations.

His vocal chops come out in the band’s three-part harmonies that hearken back to the incomparable Crosby, Stills & Nash.”

The Sweet Remains’ educational outreach activities are supported, in part, with funds provided by the Western States Arts Federation, the Idaho Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

A

s soon as you open the door to Silvercreek Living, you realize it’s a happy place.

The private-care, residential community on the northern edge of Hailey is a brand new, state-ofthe-art, sunny, clean and downright joyful place.

When I walked into the assisted-living building last week, I was greeted by classic rock music and the laughter of a group playing cards. The energy was so positive and inviting that I wanted to sit down and hang out with the residents, family members and staff instead of go into the office to do the interview for this story.

“You always hear laughter and people having a good time out there,” Anita Northwood, owner of Silvercreek Living, said from her office. “This is a happy place and that’s the goal.”

Anita was inspired to open Silvercreek Living after watching the struggles her parents went through in the latter parts of their lives.

“I did this out of passion, because watching what my parents went through, struggling trying to live on their own and find good care, was so tough,” said Anita, who originally moved to Sun Valley in 2001. “I don’t want other people to have to go through that. Sooner or later we all need help and we deserve quality care.”

Silvercreek Living includes two nearly identical buildings and employs 25, including a full-time nurse, activities director, chef, and administrator/ executive director, Reagan McLaughlin, who runs the day-to-day operations.

The assisted-living facility offers 16 rooms with kitchenettes and a large great room with an open kitchen, a dining area, couches and a giant television. There is also a separate activities room with a salon and exercise area. The memory-care building looks the same, but the rooms do not include kitchenettes.

“We think of coming to live here as the next chapter of life,” explained Anita. “We don’t think of the people here as patients; they are our residents and our family.”

One of the challenges folks (and their families) have during their later years is that they often wait too long to look for quality assisted living.

Sawtooth National Forest Applies For IDPR Grant Funds

A press release from the Sawtooth National Forest announced that the U.S. Forest Service is seeking public comment on proposed projects for which it is seeking grants from the State of Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR).

Each year, Idaho provides funding for public land agencies through a grant application process. These funds are raised through the sale of a variety of boating, recreation, and off-road-vehicle stickers.

Agencies applying for IDPR grants are required to provide matching funds or inkind contributions.

The Forest Service would appreciate comments or feedback on the grant proposals listed below. Comments should be submitted by Feb. 18. Please contact the individual listed below to comment on specific projects; the proposed project is listed below by location: Location: Ketchum Ranger District Project: Ketchum Ranger District Trails Maintenance FY20 (RTP Grant). The intent of this project is to fund heavy maintenance on approximately 170 miles of the 400 miles of motorized and non-motorized trails located on the Ketchum Ranger District to mitigate resource damage, address safety concerns and enhance current trail opportunities.

Idaho NAMI Addresses Medicaid Expansion

The Idaho chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) held its Southwest Idaho conference in Boise on Saturday, Jan. 26, where the organization tackled several big issues, namely Medicaid expansion.

NAMI Treasure Valley president Eric Cawley unveiled “The State of Mental Health in the Treasure Valley” as a talking point.

More than 110,000 Treasure Valley residents are living with a mental illness.

“If these patients were Medicaid-eligible, Idaho would save an estimated $85.2 million over 10 years on behavioral health and $48.9 million on mental health services, or $134.1 million between the two programs. Why wouldn’t Idahoans want these savings?” Cawley said.

Considerable emphasis was placed on eliminating the stigma of mental illness. With Idaho currently ranking 50th out of 51 states and territories in terms of per-capita spending, the need for increased efforts combating the stigma of mental illness is needed at all levels of local and state government.
