very time food is consumed, it is either feeding bad gut bacteria or helping to fight it. Green smoothies are chock-full of health benefits and a great way to help Americans, young and old, drink their vegetables. What is a green smoothie? It is a blended drink that combines leafy greens with fruits, vegetables, healthy fats such as flax and coconut oil, and sometimes even protein. The drinks “offer a rainbow of flavors and textures,” writes Bo Rinaldi in “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Green Smoothies.” And they always make delicious, super-nutritious, whole-food meals. Among the many benefits, green smoothies contain a plethora of fiber, which helps lower cholesterol and glucose levels and keeps stomachs feeling full. H

umans need food, water, and oxygen to live. Sleep is also on that list for people to stay alive. According to the National Sleep Foundation, people spend one-third of their lives asleep. That may seem like a lot, but many people still don’t get enough sleep or the right sleep to feel rested. And not getting enough sleep can affect your health in many ways. So how much is enough and how do people get more? There is not one specific number for every individual for the correct amount of hours of sleep needed per night. The National Sleep Foundation has done numerous studies but stresses that it is important for each individual to pay attention to their own needs by looking at how they feel on different amounts of sleep. laine County is ranked second among all counties in Idaho for the overall health of its citizens, according to a study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. Washington is the only county in Idaho with a better health rating. That’s the good news. The bad news is that Idaho is ranked 45th among all states for the mental health of its citizens. He demonstrated several symptoms that suggested he might have a serious endocrine disorder, and I referred him to a competent medical team for evaluation. This evaluation revealed that he had a serious brain tumor that caused not only his failed treatment, but was causing unnecessary bodily growth, and many other systems in his body to fail. He courageously sought treatment and, after adequate treatment and follow-up, he was cured of his condition. This person later thanked me for saving his life—a humbling adulation I’m afraid I can’t take full credit for; my training at the top-level University of California San Francisco was directly responsible. Nevertheless, it was truly an honor to be involved. The WebMD website also reiterates number 7, suggesting to ‘ban laptops, cellphones and televisions from your bedroom.’ The Mayo Clinic website states that lack of sleep can actually make you sick: ‘Lack of sleep can affect your immune system. Studies show that people who don’t get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as a common cold virus. Lack of sleep can also affect how fast you recover if you do get sick.’ They also state that ‘long-term lack of sleep also increases your risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease.’

WooWoo Shoppe A Spititual Experience

T

he Wood River Sustainability Center (WRSC) produces, promotes and sells local sustainably farmed food, and fosters a sustainable local economy by supporting local farmers, home gardeners and artisans, and providing education to consumers. We are committed to local food and education on gardening, preserving and cooking. We provide gardening supplies, including appropriate seeds for our climate, seedlings produced locally, and compost. We offer classes on gardening, raising chickens, cooking, pickling, fermentation and composting. The WRSC features an event space, a commercial kitchen and multiple learning environments. We host monthly Farm to Table Dinners (an interactive learning dining experience), cooking classes and

gardening-related classes. We are also serving a Farm to School lunch program at two schools in the Wood River Valley that reach about 350 children per week.

Products The Wood River Sustainability Center stocks “beyond organic” (see our definition below) grass-finished local lamb and beef, Berkshire pork, pastured chicken and eggs, wild Alaskan sockeye salmon, local produce, locally produced goods, garden supplies, and organic starts from the Wood River Valley. We also have state-certified raw cow’s milk, raw goat’s milk, fermented food (sauerkraut, kombucha and kefir) and raw cow’s milk yogurt. We also bake a fermented sourdough bread fresh every day. elcome to the New Year! Everyone knows it’s that time because we are bombarded with resolutions to be stronger, weigh less, eat healthier, work out more, do this, and do that. So we write it down, we dream big, we summon our willpower and then… whoops… by about mid-January, maybe mid-February, we are back at square one. News flash! New Year’s resolutions don’t actually work. Let’s face it; we pretty much already know the things we should do to achieve our goals, and that hasn’t changed just because it’s January. The interesting question is, WHY aren’t we doing them? The truth is, what looks like laziness is often just exhaustion in disguise. Sit on that for a minute. Most of us are NOT lacking in motivation. We are exhausted. And THEN we throw more on our plate in the form of big goals and expectations at the beginning of the year. No wonder these resolutions don’t stick! How about this for an alternative: Set your sights on bringing more JOY into your life instead of working so hard to “fix” everything. he Wood River Community YMCA is filling in the gap for our community in 2016, encouraging and providing wellness among local companies. Corporate wellness is on the radar across the nation and is evident by a vast number of publications dedicating page and screen space to the topic. It is estimated that half of U.S. employers offer employees some type of a wellness program. In some cases, it is out of the scope of many companies to be able to provide such programs. In the last three years, the Wood River YMCA has brought the Corporate Wellness Cup to the Wood River Valley. In 2016, the YMCA will focus on encouraging co-workers to get elbow to elbow for fitness. The fitness competition does not have to take place at the Y, but they certainly provide the space to meet goals and accomplish the challenges. Just 30 minutes of fitness each day will rack up challenge points with the Ytraak online app that offers mobile app capability to members of the Corporate Wellness Cup. The program provides discounts for employees to access the YMCA facilities, but does NOT require that the competition be fulfilled inside the YMCA. They are encouraging skiing, snowshoeing, dog walking and any other activity that will get participants into the great outdoors. Addi-
