RUNWAY BRIDE
2018’s wedding-dress trends

BY YANNA LANTZ
ew York’s Bridal Fashion Week, celebrity looks on the red carpet and old Hollywood glamour have inspired many of 2018’s newest wedding-dress trends. Although many traditional white ball gowns were seen, several other styles have been featured from multiple designers as the hot looks for this year’s brides. One of the most popular looks to appear on the runway this year
was white dresses with pearl embellishments. The beautiful detail work helps transform a more traditional, romantic gown into a modernized and feminine classic. Fashion leaders Oscar de la Renta, Christos Costarellos and Jenny Packham each featured multiple looks with pearl embellishments. Long, mid or mini, capes were all over the Bridal Fashion Week runways. “Equal parts modest and glamorous—that’s the power of
the cape,” says Popsugar’s Hannah Weil McKinley. Drawing inspiration from the resurgence of superheroes and princesses, the cape instantly adds a bit of drama and practicality to a gown. From Lela Rose’s adorable collared, button-down top, to Naeem Khan’s lace-trimmed, high-low poncho, to many long, billowing cloakContinued WEDDING DRESS Page 5

KEEPING IT SIMPLE
How to keep wedding jitters and costs under control BY DANA DUGAN
• Plan far in advance to avoid last-minute scrambling. Start a spreadsheet early. Find out how much you can spend and stick with it. There are websites you can dive into, including minted. com, zola.com and theknot.com, many of which provide a registry for gifts. • Book your venue and caterer—if that’s the direction you’re taking. • Whittle 20 percent off your guest list right off the bat, remembering that 20 percent of invitees decline anyway, unless they are all neighbors and you’re having the event at home. • Do you need a tent and dance floor? Maybe your venue provides for one. If not, check with party rental outfits, locally and even farther away. • Re-fashion a family member’s wedding dress. Find a local seamstress or tailor to do alterations to an older heirloom dress. • Make your own invites. There are so many options these days, from online services to creating your own design. Buy quality stock paper and print them yourself. Attach a photo, do calligraphy, add a dried and pressed blossom, or seeds. Remember to include your wedding website. • Make a list of events, hotels, weather info and travel tips for your out-of-town guests. Leave a local map and treat in their rooms. • Ask for help from friends in lieu of gifts; i.e., music, food, flowers, bartending, shuttle drivers, photographer. People love to get involved as long as they’re not losing money. • Hold the ceremony in a beautiful backyard of family or friends. There are so many lovely places, especially in the Wood River Valley, to stage a wedding. Look outside the box and consider everything. • Stock the bar yourself. Talk to your liquor store’s owner/manager to see about getting a discount. Stick with basics. People generally won’t ask for a Manhattan at a wedding, but they do enjoy a specialty drink prepared just for the event. • Make it a potluck. People will break out their best recipes for you and your honey; just make sure to give them direction on the dishes. • Choose seasonal flowers from the farmers’ market (make arrangements with your local farmer to buy his stock that week), from your own garden (plan ahead on what’s in season and what will grow in the area), or a friend’s garden. • Give everyone a job. People love to feel part of an event. • Have a day-of coordinator with a list to make sure all the elements are in place. • Don’t break the bank. Couples who spend the most money on their weddings actually face a higher risk of divorce due to possible debt (and the stress involved) after an expensive throw-down. • Keep breathing. Smile. And remember, it’s all for love, and that’s what’s truly priceless. tws

trains, capes were a strong force on the 2018 runway. Bring the drama with the resurgence of ruffles. All-over ruffles add dimension to a slim silhouette, while a full skirt of cascading ruffles is equal parts whimsical and fashion forward. The off-the-shoulder silhouette made another powerful comeback this year in the collections of Oscar de la Renta, Naeem Khan and Sachin & Babi, giving gowns an air of laid-back glamour and a new way to tastefully show a little skin. “Spring 2018 wedding dresses officially ushered in the age of the off-the-shoulder,” says Roberta Correia from Brides.com. Illusion bodices and sheer corsets dominated the catwalk at Fashion Week. Designers such as Francesca Miranda and Mira Zwillinger pushed the envelope with full-on-illusion bodices. With sexy sheer tops featuring lace appliqués (in just the right places), and tightly woven lace bodices with layers of nude lining, these dresses are intriguing and romantic. Looking for a chic bridal ensemble but just not into dresses? Jumpsuits and pantsuits are comfortable, figure flattering and totally of the moment. A
sleek jumpsuit with a detachable train is dressy enough for a modern ceremony, while a tailored white pantsuit is perfect for city-hall nuptials. Designers Romona Keveza, Monique Lhuillier and Rime Arodaky all featured this emerging trend. Harkening back to the glamorous glory days, feathers played a big role in many of the industry’s new collections. Feathers found their way into the collections of industry heavy-hitters like Lela Rose, Jenny Packham, Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang and Marchesa, in the form of fluttery skirts, bodices with Old World flair, and short, sassy, reception-ready dresses. Lastly, the thigh-high slit made a prominent mark in many collections. This sexy cut shows off legs in a sophisticated fashion and pays homage to Hollywood glamour. The standout designers in this category were Galia Lahav, Victoria Kyriakides and Mira Zwillinger. At the end of the day, however, a bride’s perfect dress comes back to her personal style. “The market’s trends are actually very wearable,” says Elle Strauss, the fashion director at Brides.com. “There’s really something for everyone. As long as it’s figure flattering and you feel great in it, then you’ve accomplished the look.” tws

ven though it might finally look like winter outside, spring—and, therefore, wedding season—is on its way. No matter what, the flowers will bloom and people will use those flowers as backdrops for their unions. For a few local couples, planning has already begun. Some see the Wood River Valley as the perfect place to live out their relationships, so why not their wedding day, as well? With equal attention to their respect for where they live, two couples are utilizing what’s available right out their back doors. Asia Rae and John Anderson both grew up in Hailey but somehow managed not to meet until four years ago. They are planning a low-key June wedding that will take advantage of Hailey’s beauty. “We went with our backyard because our landlord offered it up twice and, really, it’s the most beautiful place I could imagine,” Rae said. “Also, venues are really expensive, so it was a no-brainer.” Anderson is a manager with Sawtooth Brewery while Rae wrangles kids and food. They seem genuinely excited to join the married-people club. Rae has felt very supported
by her community in getting their celebration together. As with any grand event, budgets are an important aspect of planning a wedding. By taking advantage of the services and great people they have around Hailey, they managed to keep it within their means. “We opted to go potluck style because we don’t have the money to pay for everyone’s food,” Rae said. “We love camping and the outdoors, and we’re happy to have a low-key, outdoorsy wedding. Not everyone is bringing food, but I’m sure there will be enough for everyone.” In the north end of the Valley, Kellee Havens and Josh Zuck have planned a Ketchum wedding and reception. The two have been engaged since last summer and will tie the knot this upcoming summer. “We are actually getting married at a Ketchum gallery space, then eating at a downtown favorite, and ending with the usual Ketchum late-night haunts,” Havens said. As the proprietor of a bustling food truck and catering business, The Haven, Kellee wanted to keep it easy and local during one of her busiest months. These two weddings, miles apart, and planned utterly differently, have one thing in common: love of place. tws
