ildlife abounds in and around Port Phillip Bay, from Point Lonsdale to Point Nepean – 264 kilometres of fascinating and diverse coastline. Swimming with the dolphins has to be one of life’s great experiences. Like whale-watching, it is exhilarating – and, yes, just a little bit scary (damn those Jaws movies). The bay has a permanent population of bottlenose dolphins and common dolphins that come in from Bass Strait. Cruises operate out of Sorrento and Queenscliff. If you prefer to sightsee from the comfort of the cruise boat, no problem. (Passengers on the Sorrento-Queenscliff ferry regularly see frolicking dolphins and seals, too.) Cruises also take you to the seal “Taj Mahal” known as Chinaman’s Hat, a timber structure off Portsea and Sorrento, and nearby Pope’s Eye (an uncompleted fort) where
Australian fur seals also love to hang out. Pope’s Eye is a popular diving and snorkelling spot. Also fascinating – and popular with local snorkellers – are the beautiful weedy seadragons, which are found only in southern and eastern Australia. These tiny, elegant creatures love piers, so the underwater garden at Rye Pier, the pier and rocks at Portsea, piers at Blairgowrie and Mornington, and Flinders pier in Western Port Bay are ideal snorkelling and diving spots to see them. (You can also see baby seahorses at the Melbourne Aquarium – without getting wet.) The piers are also good for stingray spotting. Rays of all sizes are plentiful in the bay and can be spotted with a little effort; but be wary of their barbs and stay well clear. id you know the last shark attack in Melbourne was in March 2012? Don’t panic – it was at the Melbourne Aquarium, where a 40-centimetre shark bit a staff member on the face during feeding time. Anyone brave enough to dive with huge sharks and stingrays in the aquarium’s 2.2-million-litre oceanarium can feel safe knowing these monsters are well fed before you don the wetsuit, and that they prefer much smaller prey. Getting up close with grey nurse, sevengill and sandbar whaler sharks is an experience you won’t forget in a hurry. It may be the only time you’ll ever see a shark in Melbourne waters as these days shark encounters are few and far between in Port Phillip Bay. Potential man-eaters do enter the bay, including the occasional great white (a three-metre juvenile was filmed off Altona in 2011), but the last shark attack in the bay was in 1965 near Station Pier in Port Melbourne. The last fatal attacks were way back in the 1930s, including one at Middle Brighton pier. Regular bay visitors include bronze whalers (February-March), thresher sharks and harmless Port Jacksons, which breed in the bay. If you’re lucky you might see some PJs while snorkelling or diving off Ricketts Point in Beaumaris, Jawbone Marine Sanctuary off Williamstown and nearby Point Cooke Marine Sanctuary. The best chance of a wild shark encounter, if you really want one, is in 30-plus metres of water at Nepean Wall in the Rip, where the sevengill shark hunts in packs looking for stingrays and small sharks. Angel sharks, which for a small shark can have quite an attitude, can be found out at night at Rye Pier hunting crustaceans. \ TERESA MURPHY

PAUL KELLY
(Simon Schluter)
P
aul Kelly spent 13 hours on a bus to get from St Kilda to Kings Cross, but his interstate trip leaves him pining for his Melbourne home. All the musician wants, he sings in his famous song about that journey, is to “see the sun go down from St Kilda Esplanade”, a beloved vista for any Melburnian. There’s something warmly satisfying about recognising a suburban street in a song’s lyrics, a house from a television series or having your local pub named in a novel. There’s a sense of understanding that cannot be surpassed when you can not only relate to a character’s feeling of joy but when you, too, have had that same experience in that very street. Although there may not be as many literary references about Melbourne as there are for London, Tokyo or New York, there’s still a sizeable array of authors, writers and artists who have immortalised the Victorian capital. Familiar settings can often help tell the story. Sarah Watt’s 2009 dark comedy My Year Without Sex introduces us to Natalie, a mother of two who must abstain from sex with her loving husband after a brain aneurysm. It is the complex story of a family’s struggle with pain and mortality, relatable against the backdrop of Melbourne’s grungy inner-western suburbs of Footscray, Yarraville and Altona. The setting is familiar – we know those graffitied walls and ageing shopfronts – and it gives us a little more insight into the characters. Christos Tsiolkas’s 2008 novel, and later ABC television series, The Slap does the same. The story begins with the “incident” where Harry slaps Rosie’s four-year-old son during a game of backyard cricket. Tsiolkas tells the story from the point of view of his main characters, with each described according to their
views, beliefs and a geographical reference. Harry and his wife Sandi battling in their Brighton mansion, Rosie and her husband Gary in their rambling inner-northern suburbs terrace house. One can imagine that Rosie and Gary live in the same part of Melbourne, albeit gentrified, where Helen Garner’s Monkey Grip protagonist Nora fell in love with unstable junkie Javo in the 1970s. But while some references are subtle reminders of places we know and love, others explicitly pay homage to streets, houses and venues, turning them from suburban haunts to “stars” in their own right. Just about any Melburnian could tell you that Pin Oak Court, in Vermont South, is Neighbours’ original Ramsay Street.

After 15 years with the government, Thompson joined RMIT as an academic, teaching and returning periodically to the industry. Since the late 1970s he has taught countless students and supervised projects such as Glen Waverley Secondary College’s groundbreaking Spiders in Space. After winning an Australian competition, the project aimed to see how spiders wove webs in space, but they died with the crew when the space shuttle Columbia tragically exploded in 2003. Thompson and the students continued their work, expanding it to include bees. He has also taken students to the International Space Olympics in Moscow, where two teenage girls from Melbourne – who were on the verge of dropping out of school – became the first winners from outside Russia for their work on how blood clots are affected by different atmospheric conditions.
me that Australia is going to become irrelevant in the space-technology field,” he says. “We need … to become an intellectual-property developer.” Over the years Thompson’s religious faith has been tested, not by government priorities or failed experiments but by the Vietnam War, the loss of his first child, Katherine, to leukaemia as an infant, and two friends dying in hang-gliding accidents within months of each other. But his faith survived, and Thompson recently completed a graduate diploma in theology. “I worked out that … if God intervened and actually changed things for people, you would end up in a world of absolute chaos,” he says. “It would always be completely turned upside down. God basically doesn’t intervene. The biggest intervention was Jesus Christ.” Thompson has also reconciled science and religion. “You can … worship God and you can enjoy that
Aiming high: Lachlan Thompson with the 11.5-metre rocket he is building with RMIT students. (Chris Hopkins)
“i’ll be a rocket scientist monday to friday, five days a week, and sunday i’ll be ‘priesting’.’’ Over the past five years, Thompson has worked with RMIT students to build a space rocket they hope to launch, carrying a satellite, within 10 years. The 11.5-metre rocket, which students work on as part of their course, is at RMIT’s Bundoora campus. The goal is to have it orbit the earth at 250 kilometres. It would be the first Australian satellite launch since the federal government launched a purchased satellite in 1967. Australia has achieved very little in the field since. This disappoints Thompson, who says countries such as Canada have experienced the economic benefits of space programs by selling spin-off technology such as robotics. Given recent federal government cuts to the CSIRO, Thompson says Australia is way behind. “It concerns
relationship and you can be a successful scientist and a successful engineer,” he says. Once ordained on February 1, Thompson will do just that. He has had nothing but support from colleagues, sons Stuart, 30, a computer engineer, and David, 28, who writes computer games, and his second wife, Annie. As a deacon, he will lead services and preach sermons at St Thomas Upper Ferntree Gully on Sundays, assisting priest Raffaella Pilz with communion. He hopes to be ordained, and plans to wear his clerical collar to work and counsel colleagues and students if needed. “It’s a chance to basically enjoy and celebrate one’s Christianity; it’s fantastic,” he says. “It’s a real buzz.” \ ccritchley@theweeklyreview.com.au

a menu for all seasons food \ It’s not just what you eat that’s important, but also when you eat it, writes Alana Schetzer
A
nyone who has eaten a punnet of strawberries during the depths of winter knows how hard and tasteless they can be. A few months can make a world of difference. Picked and sold during their actual season, strawberries burst with flavour. It’s often a messy eating experience, with the juice dripping down your chin. As the summer days roll on, Melburnians are spoilt for choice when it comes to seasonal produce. Succulent mangos, strawberries and blueberries, figs, passionfruit, peaches (doughnut variety), pineapples and, of course, the ever popular cherries are in abundance. Meanwhile, vegetables at their peak between now and the end of next month include Reed and Hass varieties of avocado, white and green asparagus, heirloom pumpkins and squash. Different colours, textures and flavours are what make seasonal food so appealing. But there’s more to this appeal than what pleases the palate. Seasonal food is also more nutrient-rich and usually part of a large crop. With quicker farmer-to-seller turnaround and less time spent in industrial freezers – if any at all – it’s also cheaper.
The industrialisation of the food industry has been a curse and a blessing. Improving technology allows most seasonal foods to be shipped and stored year round. But it also means we have lost touch with where food comes from and how it tastes at its best. There is a growing push to embrace food not only in its natural state but also during its natural cycles of production. Chefs are the first to rave about the advantages of working with seasonal produce. The most recent MasterChef winner, Emma Dean, based her debut cookbook, A Homegrown Table, on the farm-to-table principles she grew up with. “I have a passion for planting, growing and harvesting,” she says. “For as long as I can remember, I have been rummaging around in the garden beds, learning to appreciate nature’s bounty and understanding the seasons.” At Carlton North’s popular La Luna Bistro, head chef Adrian Richardson calls himself a tradesman because he doesn’t just cook food, he makes it. “We make everything; we dry our own meat, make our own small goods, bake our own bread,” he says.

The modern Mediterranean-themed restaurant is well known for its emphasis on fresh produce. The menu changes by the season to take advantage of the full flavours and abundant crops available. “My philosophy is to keep it simple. I’m just a simple little bistro but the quality and freshness is really important and that’s what’s kept us successful.” Richardson says seasons should be celebrated as a time of renewal and for experiencing something different. “You look outside and the season changes; it’s cold and wet or the sun is out and bright. It’s the same with food,” he says. “By the time I get to the end of a season, I’m ready for a new one. By the end of winter, I’m looking forward to lighter meals and berries and stone fruits. By the end of summer, I start to look forward to the slow cooking and braising.”
The same goes for the food co-ops that have popped up across Melbourne, from which households can buy boxes of seasonal produce and delivered to their homes. When making the switch to seasonal – whether for your whole diet or just part of it – it’s good to remember that seasonal food, especially if it’s organic, will perish much faster than its industrialised counterparts. Fresh fruit and vegetables won’t last more than a few days (up to a week for some items), so it’s best to plan cooking and menus in advance so you know exactly what and how much you’ll need. Melbourne artist and food activist Rasha Tayeh believes that having a connection with those who grow our food and how it’s grown has social, economic and political benefits. Tayeh recently directed The Growing Food Project, a documentary that explores community initiatives to

“We make everything; we dry our own meat, make our own small goods, bake our own bread” Richardson says his best tip for picking fresh produce is to smell it. “It should smell fresh,” he says. “If it is, buy it.” Not long ago, most Australian households had big backyards that could hold a vegetable patch. Some added fruit trees, herbs and a chook pen and would have been almost self-reliant. But with shrinking block sizes, the popularity of apartment living and increasingly busy lives, that type of lifestyle has been all but relegated to the history books. The farmers’ market boom has helped fill the gap. From bayside to the north, farmers’ markets have brought back the connection between growers and buyers.
create their own food practices and supplies. She says a growing awareness of the impact of industrialised food practices on the environment is nurturing a desire for people to take control of where they source their food. “There is a growing energy in Melbourne responding to food and sustainability issues,” she says. “Local communities are teaming up to strengthen the way we produce and distribute local food. “From community gardening to neighbourhood feasts, these community food projects improve the way we eat, reconnect us with nature, build relationships between neighbours and enhance our food culture.” \ aschetzer@theweeklyreview.com.au

Olivers Hill, Frankston circa 1916, by Emma Minnie Boyd
ot only are we blessed with that big, beautiful body of water simply known as “the bay’’, we are fortunate that artists have loved it, captured it and reinterpreted it since European settlement from the 1830s. We are especially blessed to have the regional gallery in Mornington, currently staging its second exhibition dedicated to Port Phillip Bay, two years on from the first showing of Sea of Dreams, which covered 1830-1914. The latest exhibition, featuring 80 works from 1915 to the present day, continues the first comprehensive visual survey of this vast expanse of water and shoreline, and its significance to Melbourne and coastal surrounds. Many of the artists featured are among our greatest – Sidney Nolan, Arthur Streeton, Arthur Boyd and Frederick McCubbin, to name a few. Many works will be familiar, if only from books and catalogues. To see them in the flesh – the luminosity of a Streeton or Penleigh Boyd seascape; the ethereal mistiness of a Clarice Beckett; the delicate, light-as-air watercolours of Reginald Ward Sturgess; the modernism of Erik Thake; the dark, intricate detail of a postwar Arthur Boyd or Albert Tucker; the quirky contemporary photography of Polixeni Papapetrou – is transfixing. Gallery staff cast their net wide to source works by John Perceval, Charles Blackman, Fred Williams, Emma Minnie Boyd (Arthur Boyd’s grandmother), Joy Hester, Mirka Mora (whose beach “shack” in Aspendale

plummeting, and plunged the country into yet another crisis. Melbourne was hit the hardest and, at one point, unemployment touched 30 per cent. The Maguires weren’t, by any means, the only family struggling for survival, but they had significantly more to cope with than most. James Maguire’s drinking loomed large. It had cost him his home once, back in Scotland, when his parents, frustrated and embarrassed by his escalating alcoholism, encouraged him to migrate to Australia where they hoped he’d be able to put his past behind him, and make a fresh start in a new land. Instead, his drinking was wreaking a terrible toll not only on him and his prospects, but now also on the life of the woman he’d married in Australia and, in turn, on their four children. And their youngest, Bobby Maguire, took it harder than most. He developed into a quiet boy, introverted, fearful and gradually finding it harder and harder to find a reason to get up in the morning. Back then, life was always a battle, and one that helped form his attitudes, opinions and direction
forever more. When times got particularly tough, the last resort for his mum was always to write home to her and James’ families in Scotland to ask for help. If they ever agreed to send any money, they’d send it directly to her rather than risk her husband drinking it before she saw it. Two or three times, £100 would arrive, which felt like a king’s ransom to the ragged little family. And, at other times, she’d simply take Bobby by the hand, and the pair of them would make the journey by tram into town to pawn her wedding ring. Perhaps it’s not so surprising that Bobby would later choose to lead a celibate life as a priest over a secular one with marriage and children, drank alcohol only sparingly and had such tremendous empathy with victims of addictions, whether that be alcohol, drugs or gambling. He’d learnt from his own childhood exactly what it was like to be a kid with little joy in his life, or hope for the future. The old Jesuit saying “Give me the child until he is seven, and I will show you the man” has rarely ever been so true. \

Although in a heritage precinct (Castlefield, named for the 1850s mansion that is now part of nearby Haileybury College), there is scope for commercial opportunities such as medical suites (subject to approval) given its location on the corner of Hampton Street and South Road. The 1920s residence retains period features such as leadlight windows, beautifully tiled fireplaces with timber mantels, and baltic pine floorboards. Two bedrooms, an elegant lounge room, formal dining room, kitchen, laundry and bathroom are in the original part of the house, with a later extension comprising a large living room, third bedroom with en suite and walk-in wardrobe, and attached double garage. The 604-square-metre block has garden along both street frontages behind a high brick fence. The house is close to several schools, Hampton village and the beach. \ TERESA MURPHY

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. “One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.”
