our modern world. Where, once, an electrical engineer’s attention was drawn to the value locked up in Victoria’s extraordinary reserves of damp, brown coal, now – relentless thinkers that they are – much attention is focused on the potential next technologies of power generation: wind, wave, solar, waste. The human mind and imagination drives restlessly forward, and while I still have faith the scientists and engineers of our times will discover the sustainable and environmentally friendly way to keep using the 300 years’ worth of brown coal still in the ground, I also know they eagerly want to keep developing and improving the green-power-generation technologies of now and of the future. The news this week, confirmed by Trade Minister Andrew Robb, is that the federal government has asked the Clean Energy Finance Corporation to cease future investments in wind power since it is a mature industry and research should be directed elsewhere, to emerging technologies. The government has twice tried to abolish the corporation, and some commentators see this move as the next best thing. The Prime Minister and the Treasurer are also well known for their strong dislike of “visually awful” wind farms: as an SEC daughter, I can assure them a coal-fired power plant gives “visually awful” a real run for its money. The politics of this will, of course, be

y father’s workplace lies in ruins. Sir John Monash House, the steel and slate home of the Victorian State Electricity Commission that Australia’s great soldier, war strategist and engineer once managed, has been torn down and the skeletal site awaits its glamorous new incarnation. Like the industry it once housed, the Williams Street building has been lost to time. Electricity generation was the great discussion of my childhood. As the daughter of a mechanical engineer who was a member of the team at the Yallourn W brown coal power station, I focused many a school project on the science of coal-powered electricity. It fascinated me, still does, and I was proud of a connection to an industry that trained and employed generations of engineers, scientists, contractors and executives in the service of illuminating and warming my state. endlessly debated. But what matters to me are the facts and, as the US Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy shows, the “maturity” of wind technology is miles away: hence the significant and ongoing investment in wind technology and development at a government and business level. From advancements in rotor blades, turbines, tower construction, drive trains and control systems to new componentry and international

collaborations, the advances have been significant, meritorious and continuing. This intriguing technology is not yet cooked – it’s just beginning to boil. As the daughter of an engineer and the mother of a young child, I want the future employment prospects of this country to be as wide and bright as possible; I want government and industry engagement at all levels of innovation and technology: I do not want a single area of technological advancement to be excluded from the research and development portfolio of Australia’s capabilities – who would? Our car industry has led to brilliant component developments; our burgeoning biotech industries lead the way in commercially realisable health solutions. Wind power, as it grows and matures, will surely do the same – but only with the same state support a once-fledgling coal-powered industry received. ● Virginia Trioli is co-host of ABC News Breakfast on ABC1 and ABC News 24, 6-9am weekdays

ald, bespectacled and followed closely by a grumpy pug called Kevin, Adam Elliot could be one of his own creations – a shiny-pated star in the pitch-black night of the animation studio. “This is the dungeon where I have just finished shooting,” the Academy-Award-winning animator says, flicking a switch to suddenly illuminate a backdrop from the long-awaited second film in a trilogy that began with Harvie Krumpet. Ernie Biscuit, the heart-warming story of a deaf Parisian taxidermist, will premiere in his home town as part of the 64th Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF), which kicks off on July 30. With more than 300 films on the 18-day program, including 26 of the most acclaimed features showcased in Cannes this year, expectations are higher than ever for this, the oldest and largest film festival in the southern hemisphere. Adam is genuinely anxious. “The pressure gets harder with every film … it’s terrifying,” he says. “It’s like you’ve got this new baby and you want everyone to love it, to say it is not ugly, but of course not everyone will or does.” That his new 21-minute film even made the program for MIFF, last month’s Sydney International Film Festival and the prestigious animators’ showcase in Annecy, France, is a reflection of the esteem in which the filmmaker is held by the industry. “I developed RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) and had to have injections and things to try and improve, and lost a lot of time,” says Adam, 43. “I missed Cannes and had to beg for extended deadlines for other festivals, and luckily I got into all of them.” Ironically the RSI was not – according to his specialist – caused by the painstaking process of stop-motion clay animation, but rather from using power tools to renovate the former Thornbury chocolate factory that serves as both home and studio to Adam and his partner Dan Doherty. When he accepted the 2004 Oscar for best animated short and publicly thanked his “boyfriend”, Adam caused almost as much of a stir with the direct acknowledgement of his same-sex partner as the win itself. “When I thanked Dan in my speech, it wasn’t for political reasons,” he says. “It just would have been rude not to. I have never called myself a gay filmmaker. I just don’t define myself that way. Even

“I have never felt I have fitted in anywhere. I used to be worried about that, but now I know difference is good” – adam elliot

the word filmmaker doesn’t really work. I don’t have a business card for the simple reason I don’t know what to put on it.” Since Harvie Krumpet waltzed off with the Oscar under the noses of studio giants Pixar, Disney and Fox and films costing $7 million apiece, much has changed. Before he was nominated for the Academy Award, Harvie’s creator was surviving on social security benefits. The $377,000 film was wholly taxpayer-funded and shot in a self-storage unit at a facility owned by his father, Noel. Brian, the film’s clay parrot, wore real itty-bitty jumpers knitted by Adam’s mother, Val. On the day Adam returned home from LA, there were three letters waiting for him; one a congratulatory telegram from then Prime Minister John Howard, the second a similar note from the Governor-General, and finally a letter from Centrelink cutting off his dole for failing to return his form on time. The Oscar enabled Adam – with three previous short films, Uncle (1996), Cousin (1998) and Brother (1999) – to embark on his first feature, Mary and Max (2009). This film, too, was internationally acclaimed and won a swag of awards, but was a less satisfying experience for its creator, who found himself yearning to be left alone in the dark. “On Mary and Max over 120 people were employed; on Ernie there was one. This was for lots of reasons and not just economics,” Adam says. “One of the frustrations I had on Mary and Max was that I never got my hands dirty. I do claymation and stop-motion because I love making things. I just love the tactile, tangible nature of clay. There is something primeval and cathartic in making something with your hands – you go into the zone.” Returning to the short format on Ernie and changes in technology meant that Adam could do pretty much everything himself. “I wrote, directed, animated, edited and voiced some of the characters. The only parts I outsourced were the colour grade and sound mix.” He also eschewed the big-name vocal talents used in Mary and Max (it featured the voices of Toni Collette, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Barry Humphries) in favour of veteran actor John Flaus – a friend and mentor from his days as a student at the Victorian College of

the Arts – as sole narrator. Adam describes Ernie as a romantic comedy and something of a circuit breaker. He was disturbed when fans, chiefly women who identified with Mary and Max’s Mary Dinkle and her loneliness, started sending him photos of characters and quotes from his films they’d had tattooed on themselves. “One girl got a whole collage of characters including the fish smoking a cigarette, another had ‘you are my best friend, my only friend’ inked into her skin,” he says. “After Mary and Max, which depressed so many people and really was a very sad story, I felt for my own sanity it was time to do something a little lighter, so in this film – without spoiling it – I wanted not to kill everybody and to have a low body count.” That’s not to say Ernie is without its dark moments, nor is Adam himself. “My films are very similar in that the protagonists always seem to be marginalised or people who are perceived as different,” he says. “I have never had proper therapy, but I think my characters are alter egos. I have never felt I have fitted in anywhere. “I used to be worried about that, but now I know that difference is good. I don’t see my characters as disabled, I see them as imperfect and that we are all imperfect. It’s about trying to get the audience to put themselves in my characters’ shoes. Even though they are blobs of clay, I really want the audience to empathise, not sympathise.”

S

uccess has given Adam, who suffers his own involuntary tic in the form of a hereditary physiological shake, another platform – as a public speaker. He’s bemused by the tag “motivational”, but jokes, “If you want to give me money to talk, I’m motivated”. He has given more than 400 speeches for organisations ranging from multinationals, such as Apple and Google, to the Australian Funeral Directors Association, whose delegates “couldn’t stop smiling”. The strangest engagement involved speaking to a group of Australian hairdressers at a resort in Borneo next door to an orang-utan sanctuary. “The trip was a reward for hairdressers who sold the most of a particular brand of hair dye … like sure, you want a bald man to speak to you,” he chortles. But Adam’s post-Oscar life is less surreal than his back story. “My father was an acrobatic clown in a duo called The Trapinos with my uncle, Barry,” he says. “They toured the world and were regulars on Graham Kennedy’s In Melbourne Tonight. Back then they didn’t exercise properly and dad slipped a few discs in his back, so he went back to being a carpenter; that was his trade. “Then my uncle, Jim, had this idea of setting up a prawn farm north of Adelaide in South Australia. So we all moved to Port Broughton, this horrible little desert place in the outback, and I think that had a lot to do with what I became. It was a very isolated place and my siblings and I didn’t have much and had to use our imaginations and I’m sure that’s where it all started.” The prawn farm eventually went broke and the family moved back to Melbourne. From Pinewood Primary in Mt Waverley, Adam found himself suddenly attending Haileybury College after his grandfather left provision in his will for all the grandchildren to go to a private school. It was there he first held in his hand an Oscar, which had been brought to school by his art teacher, the late Graham Bennett. With fewer than 50 Oscars awarded to Australians, there was more chance that Adam – like his hapless creation Harvie – would be struck by lightning than one day win his own. Nonetheless he still doesn’t feel entirely secure. “It’s a cliché, but you are only as good as your last film. Even my mum said the other day, ‘I worry that you achieved success a bit early in your career’.” His affection for his family is huge and it’s one of Adam’s great sadnesses that his dad did not live to see his latest film finished. “I keep saying to mum and dad, don’t drop in, don’t ring me, don’t interrupt me and whatever you do don’t die. So what does dad do but have a massive heart attack and died right in the final weeks of shooting. He was 74.” The dedication to Noel Elliot at the end of the credits brings a tear to the eye as the screen goes to black. The rest is silence. ● sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au JULY 22, 2015 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 9

e were in Sydney recently but, be assured, there’s no way I will hereby attempt to compare the two cities or try to work out which one is better. They’re both pretty amazing. There is one bleedingly obvious difference between them and us, though. We were doing the famous Bondi to Bronte walk, admiring the sea views, when we noticed a parade of shiny black leggings and Nike shoes zoom past us. And then a whole bunch of Uniqlo jackets joined them, shimmering away in the wintry sun. Men and women alike were all decked out in high-performance, technologically advanced fabrics, although the men at least had the decency to wear shorts over leggings. And everywhere we went, there was a uniform bobbing of high-up-on-the-head ponytails, swinging intently as their owners pursued the good life. “We seem to be lacking a certain type of leisure wear,’’ said the other adult in this house, who prefers to exercise in bright green basketball shorts purchased c1983. At lunch, he announced our lack of the

“we noticed a parade of shiny black leggings & nike shoes zoom past us”

proper kind of Sydney-type leisure apparel to my sister, who lives there. Thankfully she was wearing a charcoal, woollen poncho wrap thing, which was of course very Melbourne. When she stood up from the table, though, we noticed that underneath the wintry wrap she was hiding a pair of distinctly black shiny leggings and trainers. “Ahhhhh,’’ we said, or maybe we screamed because we are never subtle, “she has a foot in both camps now’’. But I suspect there might be more Sydney than Melbourne slowly creeping in. Later we went shopping and people were wearing top-to-toe Lorna Jane and Lululemons right there in the CBD. Unheard

of in Melbourne. Maybe early in the morning in Elwood or at the school gate in Kew and certainly during the 2.30pm run-and-grab mum-cluster at the Coles in Moonee Ponds, but never in Brunswick and absolutely never, ever, on Collins Street. I repeat, never on Collins Street. Do these ponytails work, I wondered, or just exercise? They looked busy and purposeful as they bustled along George Street, but not sweaty. There was certainly no evidence of a post-workout ruddiness. I put Jodhi Meares and Michelle Bridges into my search engine and found out there is a name for this new fashion trend. It’s called “active wear’’.

So much I had yet to learn. The fabrics are “high-tech’’, “super-absorbent’’ and legally patented. They are also ultra-flexible, so if you put them on in the morning you can do all the things you would normally do, plus you feel fitter when you wear them so don’t actually need to exercise. Lorna Jane says you can live your best life ever if you wear them. Clearly we weren’t living ours because a taxi driver took one look at us and asked if we were Mexicans. He was a silly man, so we just ignored him. We may be from the deep, dark south, I thought, but at least we wear actual clothes.

Anyway … Then when we came back, I took my teenager to get some new jeans and she made a beeline for high-waisted, distressed skinny denims with a 7/8 length. They’re really flexible and comfortable, she said. Ahhh, good to be back in Melbourne, I thought. ● khall@theweeklyreview.com.au

Domenico came from his boldly labelled cucina to deliver our first dishes, presenting the charcuterie board with a flourish and a bright radicchio and herb salad, explaining excitedly that it contained nuggets of fried pork rind for extra crunch. Beside it his pork terrine, superior to anything similar I can recall, rested on a dreamy bed of polenta brioche. It wore a wafer of pale golden air-fried pork rind and continued the textural theme that characterises this chef’s food. L’altro Mondo is the kind of place Albert Parkers would probably like to keep to themselves. Its whitewashed walls, glossy timber floors and calm furnishings are homely and welcoming; its starched tablecloths and clearly experienced service add pleasing edges of formality. Domenico hails from Michelin-starred Il Povero Diavolo and Ristorante L’Erba del Re in Italy and spent time with the Rockpool group in Melbourne before opening his first restaurant late last year. It’s in the space occupied for a short time by Rhone Wine & Tapas, where I recall another chef coming from the same kitchen with a similar level of pride. s I get older, I find I’m drawn towards wines and beers at the lower end of the alcohol scale. Riesling, pinot noir and lager are slowly replacing big shiraz and IPA beers. I still appreciate a Barossa behemoth, but I’d rather drink lower alcohol, cool-climate shiraz. I am, however, partial to fortifieds in the winter – muscat, topaque and port – and heavier dark beers. Fortified wines are made by adding alcohol spirit. It’s a process that dates back to the 18th century, when wine was an important trade commodity. Wine would spoil when transported over vast distances and fortification helped extend its life and slow the oxidisation process. The spirit used in the fortification is as important as the wine it’s blended with. Choices range from clean, neutral spirits to complex brandies. Vintage port is fortified with a brandy spirit that weighs in about 70 per cent alcohol. Its job is to lift the fruit characters and add complexity. there’s what we do in detention camps. People might say, ‘Oh well, Australians haven’t experienced a military dictatorship’. But, I don’t know, ask a few asylum seekers how they feel in those camps.” Focusing on the real-world element – DEATH & THE MAIDEN the fact the horrific events described in the play actually happened – has helped Susie tackle a bad case of opening night jitters. It has been four years since she last trod the boards and, much as she enjoys it, returning to the “It always stage brings a world of stress. “It always feels like getting my stage feels like legs again – not my sea legs. usie Porter is disarmingly frank. While some actors might lose themselves in mystique, a chat with Susie gets straight to the heart of the matter. Take what happens when I ask why Melburnians should come see her in MTC’s new production of Death and the Maiden. “I just think this is a cracking night at the theatre,” Susie says. “I wouldn’t be thinking of my shopping list, which I sometimes do when watching theatre. Also, there’s no interval. I’m not precious about this stuff; when I hear a play goes for an hour 10 minutes with no interval, I’m more excited about it.” Fast it might be, but there’s nothing slight about Death and the Maiden. First staged in 1990, the intense psychological thriller examines the impact of Pinochet’s regime on Chile. Susie’s character, Paulina, was raped by one of the general’s men and, years later, finds herself face to face with the man she believes is her attacker. While the play is set in a period of history that might seem dusty or irrelevant, Susie says this new production should encourage punters to look more closely at the world we’re living in now. “I don’t want to get too bogged down by the politics of it, but there’s North Korea and, maybe,

MR HOLMES We’re not exactly starved for FILM Sherlock action, but this is an irresistible, uncommonly human take on the great detective. Ian McKellen’s Holmes is long since retired, living in rural isolation with a reluctant housekeeper (Laura Linney) and her son, Roger. In an attempt to stave off dementia, he’s writing an account of his last case – one he barely remembers. The third run of this SBS reality series mightn’t change any minds, but remains powerful drama. Arguably, there’s more need for the show than ever, given that it is now even harder for Australians to find out how asylum seekers are treated. It’s tempting to say the format feels tired, but it’s always affecting to see ignorant folk transformed into, as one puts it, “a better person”. Whether viewers are similarly improved is harder to judge. ●

This is the first novel in 10 years from the author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being and, without wanting to get too morbid, could well be his last. Readers might be disappointed by its slightness, in both length and substance, but this is a book that gleefully resists taking anything seriously. In seven short chapters, it drifts between a group of friends and their oft-idle, sometimes profound conversations. The effect is like spending a week in Paris with an erudite, improbably poetic and appealingly dysfunctional bunch. ●

From the startling, hi-NRG opening of Painted, it’s clear this New York duo are chasing a bolder sound for their second LP. In place of the début’s dreamy seductiveness is a glossier, aggressively catchy – and, yes, much dancier – approach to pop. Tracks such as Pieces and the title track impinge on Florence + The Machine territory (both Florence and MS MR are playing gigs in Melbourne this week), but the record has a shimmering, sexy romance all its own. ●

The detective genre is much trampled, but Paul Thomas Anderson attempts something different in this rich adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel. We’re never sure how seriously we should be taking proceedings, given Anderson and star Joaquin Phoenix (for the most part) play the spoof elements as seriously as the drama. Likewise, it’s not clear where our bumbling, half-stoned hero is leading us, but it’s hard not to be entranced by this meandering, intoxicating tour of 1970s LA. ● MB

I love Sandringham B O B W H I T E WAY \ 8 1

(SCOTT McNAUGHTON)

Passionate environmentalist Bob Whiteway has lived in Abbott Street, Sandringham, for more than four decades. In his 40 years as a geography teacher at Beaumaris High School (a campus of Sandringham College from 1988), the local “Mr Chipps” instilled in countless Baysiders a lifelong love of nature and the marine environment. He was the founding president of volunteer group Marine Care – Ricketts Point and received an OAM for his environmental work in 2013. He has just released an anthology of short stories about teachers and kids, Teacher Inside Out. What do you love about living in Bayside? I was born in the northern suburbs and hated it because it had no trees. We moved to Black Rock when I was nine and I boarded at Haileybury in Brighton. I could never leave the sea and the nature reserves and natural environment that is still protected in Bayside. It’s the most beautiful place.

Where do you go for a great cup of coffee? I enjoy the little kiosk at the end of Jetty Road; it’s a hidden gem. Dog-walkers love it and you’ll always find someone to talk to. I also like Elfresco Café for breakfast after a brisk walk on the beach, and Rickett’s Point Café in Beaumaris, where we meet on a Saturday after a snorkel in warmer weather. For a meal with friends? Cerberus at Half Moon Bay is a special place – great food and wonderful views. You almost feel you’re on the French Riviera. I also like the Sandringham Hotel; it has good food, a friendly, family atmosphere and great location opposite the beach. And Milano’s in Brighton for its food, service and, again, sea views. Always the sea. For a nice bottle of wine? Uncorked Wines always has something interesting. I like a nice brut champagne. For plants for your garden? Bay Road Nursery – we’ve always gone there. ●

“We like to create a calming and welcoming space for children and their families” – co-owner Denise Ball

Bamkins sells more than 700 products in-store and online for children with learning and behavioural challenges, including autism. Who’s behind the counter? Counsellor and behaviour therapist Denise Ball founded this unique shop with her husband, Andrew Hutchins, in 2013. Their aim was to make a difference for families with children with learning and behavioural challenges, including children with ADHD and autism. Denise and fellow counsellors work with parents to understand why the child’s behaviours are there and to help them see the world through the child’s eyes, as well as support individuals. They also work with schools, speech and occupational therapists. “Helping parents to understand the connection between behaviours and the underlying emotions can create great change,” she says. Denise co-runs a six-week parenting program, Tuning into Kids, and a social and emotional program for children aged five to seven. What’s in store? There are games, toys and books designed to help children with issues such as managing their emotions, routines, friendships, separation and divorce, sibling rivalry, and sensory issues, and staying calm and focused at school. “We love to know about new products, too, so we welcome new product inquiries,” Andrew says. ● TERESA MURPHY

Kids have never had so many ways to learn about sexuality, whether it’s online, at school, through friends or in grandma’s old school books. But it’s still not easy. I’ve always been open about relationships and used the proper words for body parts, such as penis and vagina, but my son still hates discussing the nitty-gritty details. His older sisters are the same. They’d rather walk over hot coals than talk to their parents about intimate relationships, and I don’t blame them. I was the same at that age. But they know they can approach us at any time about any topic, and I’m confident they have the information they need. We have managed to cover relationships, same-sex attraction, gender diversity,

pregnancy and resisting the pressure to do what they’re not comfortable with. They also read books, such as Kaz Cooke’s The Rough Guide to Girl Stuff Stuff, which covers the gory details with wit and compassion. Humour aside, it has never been more important to ensure our kids are educated and confident about their sexuality. Peer pressure is even worse in the internet age, with online porn giving many teens a warped view of “normal” and what partners should demand and expect of each other. This means many young people feel pressured to do what they see in this material. Melbourne sexual and reproductive health nurse and educator Vanessa Hamilton is concerned that many now use porn as their frame of reference for intimate partnerships. “The main way to change the negative impact on future sexual relationships is for our children to be educated by their parents about the reality of

T H E S E X UA L H E A LT H N U R S E & E D U C AT O R Discussing sexuality can be tricky for parents. When asked a confronting question, don’t panic. Remove the layers of your own sexual experiences, fears, pleasures and worries and keep your responses simple and accurate. If unsure, be honest but don’t dodge the issue. Tell them it’s a great question and ask what they know as a starting point. Tell them they can approach you about anything; nothing is off-limits. Sometimes this needs to be said. All conversations should be based around respectful relationships. Other key themes include pleasure, fun, fulfilment and the positives of intimate connections and partnerships. We shouldn’t focus on negatives such as diseases and teen pregnancy, but for more enjoyable sexual experiences they need to know about Sexually Transmissible Infections, contraception, boundaries and feeling safe. Be positive. If walking in on pornography viewing, say, “Oh! I’m so glad I have seen those images, it gives me the opportunity to explain what they are …” Parents should also discuss pornography with teenagers because it is giving them the wrong information about sex. ● VANESSA HAMILTON Clinical nurse consultant with 20 years’ sexual health nursing experience. T Talking the Talk T Sex & Health Education www.talkingthetalksexed.com.au

THE RESEARCHER It’s never too early to talk to your kids about sexuality and relationships. Lots of little conversations over time are preferable to the idea of having “the talk”. There are countless opportunities to start these chats – maybe a friend is pregnant or perhaps you have seen or heard something in the news. Find out what your school is doing regarding sexuality education so you can discuss these topics at home. While there are some excellent resources available for teachers, how the subject is actually delivered in the classroom still varies widely. An effective school program will cover more than puberty, pregnancy and sexually transmissible infections. It should help your child to engage in respectful relationships, look after their friends, engage in safer sexual behaviours and affirm diversity. If you think you have left it too late to begin these conversations, or if the subject makes you feel uncomfortable, be honest and share this with your child. There are lots of excellent resources that you can access or that you can give to your child. If you don’t know something, find out together. The booklet Talk Soon. Talk Often is an excellent guide that can help you to get started (available from www.healthywa.wa.gov.au). ● JACQUI HENDRIKS Sexologist at Curtin University U www.curtin.edu.au

LIL ROMANO

(SCOTT McNAUGHTON)

L

il Romano is no stranger to the world of glamour. As a child, she would watch mum Judy, a key player in Melbourne’s public relations industry, organise high-end promotional events such as the celebrity-packed Emirates marquee on Melbourne Cup Day or Mercedes-Benz at the Australian Grand Prix. And Lil has followed in her footsteps. Along with Judy and Gareth Beck, Lil is a director of Romano Beck PR and spends her days and evenings meeting clients, fine-tuning events, attending fashion shows and cocktail parties and flying interstate or overseas to support international clients. “I wake up one morning thinking I will do A, B and C and end up doing E, F and G. There’s no routine. And while it can be glamorous, I am at events to work and the hours can be long,” she says. Lil’s family home is a detached property in Brighton, a short walk from the beach and Bay Street shops and cafés. It’s filled with memories of their Italian-born family. “We’ve lived here since 1998. Dad spent six years renovating and extending. Our family is ridiculously close and I’ve got lots of happy memories of sitting around the pool or of sitting at the dinner table and chatting. This house means a lot to us.” ● SARAH MARINOS smarinos@theweeklyreview.com.au

SQ UEEZE BOX This is my grandfather’s – it belongs to dad’s dad. Dad came to Melbourne with his family before he turned five and the squeeze box came on the boat with them. They got off the boat and settled in Brunswick. Nonno was a butcher and dad worked there and he was a drummer with Johnny Farnham. My uncle is a musician and when we have people over, he gets this out because he’s the only one who knows how to play it.

My favourite thing Brian and Geoffrey, our long-haired chihuahuas, are very important and so is my cat, Fatso, who is 18. Brian and Geoffrey are bathed and washed every Sunday – that’s beauty day. Brian was initially called Rocky but nobody liked it. Brian was suggested instead and it stuck.

FA M I LY P H O T O S This collection of photos is of my dad’s family. My great-grandfather was a train driver and used the whistle framed on the wall. And there is also a pair of scissors that cut the umbilical cord of my great-grandma. Dad is there when he was a drummer in his band days. The butcher is my grandfather who had a shop in Brunswick.

PORTSEA PRO-AM TROPHY I love to brag about this bad boy! I won the 2013 Swisse Portsea Pro-Am and I couldn’t wait to get my trophy. But they announced me as the winner and gave me a golf jacket instead – no trophy! I was so disappointed that my friend had this made for me. It’s a copy of what they usually present.

ALICE ART WORK

I’ve lived in these LXE pants since I got them at the start of this year. They are very me. I’m a tomboy and they’re leather and a comfortable cut. I wear them to work, to go out in and at weekends. I love their versatility.

I’m obsessed with the Alice in Wonderland story and the meaning behind it. Everyone has different theories. I was a little bit of a rebellious teenager and produced this as my take on the story. I won the people’s choice award for a Stonnington art competition although my school wanted the picture removed before people could vote. My teachers weren’t too impressed! Setting the scene

I’m the third generation of my family to own this house but lots of people, including boarders and foster children and a succession of Labradors, have called it home.

WHERE I GREW UP

WENDY STAPLETON

A R E Y O U R E A D Y, B O O T S ? I was one of a troupe of kids who performed once a week on The Tarax Show on Channel Nine. We floundered around in the background while either Patti McGrath (Newton) or Denise Drysdale sang. This particular outfit was for These Boots Are Made For Walkin’.

f the walls of Wendy Stapleton’s Moonee Ponds home could talk, she jokes you wouldn’t hear yourself think – there have always been so many people coming and going. But even so, the singer of Wendy and the Rocketts fame can’t fathom how the original four-room Bent Street bungalow accommodated her grandparents, Harold and Violet Delaney, and their six children. “One of my earliest memories is sitting on the verandah with my grandmother, waiting for my mother to come home from work. It was the late ’50s and everyone knew everyone in the street. We played cricket in the road and used to drive Vic the old milkman mad by ringing the big bell in the lane outside the dairy for milk and then running away. “My brothers, Robert and Bill, and their friends used to have shanghai [slingshot] fights with kids on the other side of Moonee Ponds Creek. It was Brunswick versus Moonee Ponds. Of course there was no freeway there then, just beautiful gullies with loads of horses and big cliffs that we’d slide down, on anything we could find. We’d come home all disgusting and dirty and mum would ask, ‘Have you been at the creek?’ and

My first KISS

I was about 11. It was one of the boys from a pantomime I was in and we were all playing spin the bottle.

FA M I L Y E N T E R TA I N E R Wendy, 5, in the backyard with brothers Robert, 13, and Bill, 12, took on the mantle of family entertainer from her mother, Alice, who was a singer-dancer in wartime concert parties.

» Wendy Stapleton Trio performs every second Sunday at the Emerald Hotel, South Melbourne, and every fourth Sunday at the Cabana Lounge, East Malvern RSL.

Carole King, Tapestry. I learnt it back to front and when I got my first real gig at 15, filling in for a singer who was sick and I had to pretend I was 18, I sang the whole album – it was all I knew.

LED ZEPPELIN

CONCERT

Led Zeppelin at Kooyong. I was 16 and wore a [House of ] Merivale & Mr John suit with really big flared pants. Jimmy Page was playing his guitar with a violin bow when it started to rain and we thought he was going to get struck by lightning.

JOB (ISTOCK \ THINKSTOCK \ SUPPLIED)

we’d swear black and blue we hadn’t, then our golden lab Skipper would run in all wet and give the game away. She would threaten us with the feather duster and Skipper would jump up, grab the feather duster and run under the house. When I was about 13, dad renovated and when he and the boys pulled the verandah off they started laughing … under the verandah were at least 50 feather dusters. We were crying with laughter.” That renovation also brought “the bar”. “It had poles wrapped with plastic ivy and we thought it was very funky. Mum didn’t drink and there were all these exotic bottles of stuff and as we got older we drank them one by one, but as long as we filled them with cold tea or green cordial or whatever, she was happy.” There are also sad memories. “My father died young at 54. I had just turned 20. He came home from work and dropped right there of a heart attack. I was with him. It took a long time for all of us to get over because he

was so young and it was so unexpected.” Wendy was 24 and on the brink of signing with Mushroom Records when she bought the house from her mother, having earned the deposit singing advertising jingles. It was the one constant when she began touring, and was a familiar ground for her mother when she was disabled by strokes. It was here, too, that Wendy raised her daughter, Alexandra, now 23. Today there is another floor on the house. The flat in the back, where Wendy’s grandparents and later her mother lived, has been replaced by Wendy’s husband Paul Norton’s recording studio. “It’s still a very humble little house, but has a vibe about it that makes me happy. It will always be home.” ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

WE LOVE IT

I

t’s not only the address of this property that brings to mind the idea of hosting a cocktail pool party – it’s the fact that it boasts the ideal indoor/outdoor space to do exactly that. While the enclosed al fresco room of this contemporary house has a resort-style ambience, with its heated plunge pool/spa, it is even better for being suited not only to entertainment, but to year-round, day-to-day family living. The four-bedroom house, built by the vendors 12 years ago, was designed to be large, light and airy and to incorporate useable spaces for the family to get together. “This has always been enjoyed year-round,” the vendor says. “We’ve done a lot of living here.” There are two other large living areas – three, if you count the lounge section of the main bedroom suite upstairs – but the heated al fresco room offers all-weather holiday-mood relaxation, with sandstone pavers, a sitting area, the pool/ spa behind a frameless glass barrier and a powder room. A T-shape of intersecting glass sliding doors is the key, linking and separating this flexible space, the kitchen, a large adjoining meals area and the back garden. The position of the generous kitchen lets the cook supervise the pool and connect with visitors and diners. It also has a nice outlook to the garden, where a square of lawn rimmed by low-maintenance plants is a modest but private open space with the advantage of north-west orientation. The kitchen, under a raked ceiling, has a 900-millimetre freestanding Ilve stove, splashback windows revealing plants along the side path and two nifty stone cutting boards inset on the bench above integrated bins. A wide island bench and breakfast bar is lit by a trio of grass-green pendant lights. Between the kitchen and the entry foyer, the carpeted living room caters for formal and casual occasions with an oversized space, shelves at each end and picture windows revealing greenery down the same side path. The opposite, northern, wing of the house comprises a large dual-access bathroom and three bedrooms; two have built-in wardrobes and the front one has a walk-in wardrobe and large windows facing the street. There’s also a central component to the floor plan, between the children’s bedrooms and the living room, of a powder room, concealed storage and large laundry. The stairs to the main bedroom and door to the garage come off a striking foyer. Rising to a double-height ceiling, it’s a suitably dramatic entry past the façade’s prominent stone feature wall. High-gloss brushbox floors have a big impact, before continuing down the hallway to the meals/ kitchen area . It’s no coincidence that upstairs, the resort mood is repeated in the luxury of an enormous bedroom retreat and its en suite – “based on a hotel presidential suite”, according to the vendor. There’s a wide walk-in wardrobe, a sitting area, a study nook and doors to a balcony with plantation shutters. Talking of resorts, there’s nothing like a local beach to add to the mix. It’s just a 10-minute walk to the bay from here. If it’s too cold for a dip, hit the Bay Trail for a bike ride or a run through Brighton towards the city or, heading south, through Sandringham to Black Rock and Beaumaris ● JACQUI HAMMERTON property@theweeklyreview.com.au

A bluestone path leads to the tessellated-tile verandah of this grand old Victorian terrace house, with beautiful dusky blue lacework. A wide hall with polished floorboards and soaring ceilings has a central arch. The big front lounge has a broad bay window while bifold doors open the space to the dining room. Both have wrought-iron fireplaces ensconced in heavy wooden mantels. A bright family room at the heart of the ground floor has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves along one wall. This area leads to a sparkling, contemporary kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and a tiled splashback. It has white cabinetry and there’s a separate laundry. Climb the stairs to find two spacious bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and fireplaces. One opens onto the balcony. Two smaller bedrooms are at the rear with two bathrooms. The low-maintenance paved backyard leads to a carport accessed from a laneway, and a workshop. Overlooking Albert Park, the house is minutes to the beach and the No. 96 city tram. ● STEPHEN A. High, ivy-strewn walls provide plenty of privacy for this immaculate art deco house set in landscaped gardens. Vines also hug the entrance portico. Step inside and gleaming hardwood floors feature under high ceilings. Double glass doors open onto a light-filled formal living area laid out in a T-shape and sporting big windows on three sides. An original fireplace has a red-stained timber mantel. The main bedroom has another large window. It also has a deep walk-in wardrobe and a shower en suite with a corner vanity. Two bedrooms with built-in wardrobes are across the hall from one another while a third is tucked in beside the laundry and spacious main bathroom. Sprawling, open-plan living takes over to the rear of the house. A granite kitchen has sleek white cabinetry, a wall-mounted Smeg oven and a big pantry, with the meals area set in a bay window. BEAUMARIS \ 21 HAYDENS ROAD This contemporary Lowe Constructions house in a night-lit Linton LaFontaine garden sets a benchmark for recent Beaumaris style, yet it pays tribute to some features of local modernist houses of the 1950s and 1960s. While it favours clean lines, the use of natural materials adds texture and character – chunky fence posts, a timber-fronted garage, Kakadu slate paving and cladding, spotted gum and terrazzo-look polished-concrete floors. Picture windows, glass sliding doors and highlight windows draw in natural light. A trio of living, dining and family rooms focuses on the pool and spa area, set in split-level decks that fill the north-west rear garden. Under a wide eave there’s an outdoor kitchen and plenty of room for outdoor dining. The indoor kitchen has a stone island bench under two stunning brushed-steel light fittings from Spain. An open staircase leads to two children’s bedrooms and a rumpus room. At the front of the house are a study or guest’s bedroom (with pull-down bed) and the main bedroom, which has glass doors to a private deck. It’s a great spot for a morning coffee and the outdoor shower is a reminder that the beach is at the end of the street. Also nearby are Donald MacDonald Reserve, schools and shops and there’s a bus stop at the front gate. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON
