The pursuit of perfection in the home is what compels many of us to repeatedly visit Ikea on a sunny Saturday, jousting with the crowds for a Hoogbavilkomenen sofa and a hot dog at the cafe – and that’s if you can make it to the end of the arrow-directed lines without a roof-tearing argument with your beloved. Instagram and Pinterest make interior styling our ideal spaces so much easier – they instil a sense of confidence and boldness of choice. HOME EDITION \ COVER STORY
‘W
hat’s inspiring your work right now?’ Despite this being a question that is so common, it makes most creative professionals cringe, the answer clearly divulges the values and passions at the heart of each and every design project. We asked three leading Melbourne practices to open their metaphorical book of inspiration, revealing the textures, colours, places and issues that are guiding their residential design work.
»
Interior designer Adele Bates describes her work as “detailed, resolved and timeless, with an element of unexpected”. There is a rich, fashion-inspired aesthetic demonstrated throughout her portfolio, achieved in the use of deeply saturated jewel tones on velvet furniture pieces, thick carpets and residential window treatments. These plush materials and evocative elements are as exquisite to look at as they are to touch. “It lends another dimension to the interiors when it’s equally pleasurable to experience the space,” she says. Bates’ visit to both the Milan Design Fair (Salone Del Mobile) and Cersaie Bologna (an international exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings) last year saw her develop a deeper appreciation of unique stones and hand-made ceramics that is increasingly evident in her work. “It fosters such a great appreciation for the craftsmanship as well as the history of the product and the industry,” she says. These materials lend themselves particularly well to forming striking spiral staircases and intricate lighting pendants. “This heavily influenced how we incorporate stone and tiles into our design and has encouraged us to seek unique ways to integrate the materials,” Bates says. Another factor that underpins Bates’ work is the ever-increasing global issue of waste, which sees her design only quality projects that will last decades. “The way we live and the way we purchase has changed over the years, and we go to great lengths to specify and encourage our clients to purchase transitional pieces that are well made, will stand the test of time in both style and quality, and will grow with them and their families.” ● ● adelebates.com.au

‘‘I think we all draw on our memory to create something new, even if it does push the boundaries of what we expect to be the norm.’’ - DOMENIC CERANTONIO
There is honesty to Nick McKimm’s work, as showcased in his signature material palette. Featured throughout the portfolio of his design and construction practice, McKimm, is an almost uniform use of exposed brickwork, zinc and timber on home facades, with concrete, polished plaster and stone for the interiors. Colour is kept to a minimum on the built-form and used only sparingly in its accessories to highlight shape and textural elements. “The muted tones of concrete, the soft warmth of a timber and the natural expression of a stone are often complemented by subtle hints of colour in soft furnishings and the surrounding landscape,” McKimm says. Two places of particular design significance for McKimm, are South America and New York city. “South America as a whole is very good at using raw and robust materials and simple building forms. They keep it minimal and let the architecture translate to how a space feels,” McKimm says. “At the same time, New York, for its frequent use of steel and big voids, which we employ in many of our designs.” These design influences are paired with each of his clients’ unique perspective and desires in the creation of highly personal and tailored projects, time after time. “Inspiration often leads to motivation and deeper creativity,” he says. ● ● mckimm.com.au

Managing principal of Cera Stribley Architects (CS-A) Domenic Cerantonio acknowledges that his work is inspired by the world around him. “Personally, I find that when you are designing, you often look to your memory, which then leads down the path of these fantastic sources of inspiration,” Cerantonio says. “Whether it is through education or research, I think we all draw on our memory to create something new, even if it does push the boundaries of what we expect to be the norm.” Among the material influences underpinning his designs are those with a raw and weathered appearance, such as coal-fired and hand-made bricks. “They are modern yet create a sense of age and stability, as though they have been there for years,” he says. Cerantonio is also drawn to the look of exposed concrete blocks on house exteriors, as is common to homes throughout Brazil. The use of this material
emphasises curving shapes while beautifully contrasting against surrounding natural landscapes. CS-A’s most recent project, Parkside Beach House, is a prime example of this principle, which has been paired with other characteristics more typical of London architecture. “Both these influences have played a role in the design process. It’s a long, linear building that curves and is clad in only timber, which allows the form to express itself.” Cerantonio’s material palette complements CS-A’s wider penchant for using neutral colours, a fact that is perhaps partially due to both the practice principals being colour blind. “This stems from our core ethos to create a sense of timelessness and uncomplicated architecture,” Cerantonio says. “We want our buildings to be just as in vogue in 10 to 15 years and quite often colour can be a feature that comes in and out of fashion.” ● ● cs-a.com.au

t the first open-for-inspection for an Edwardian cottage in Abbotsford, Anna Rozen confesses that in her mind’s eye, she was redesigning it. Rozen and her partner bought the single-fronted weatherboard and, as is a tendency for most architects agonising the possibilities of their own homes, she carried on obsessively reinventing the design every couple of weeks for a year. “It was a real challenge to knuckle down to one idea”, she says. For a designer whose day job is with Wolveridge Architects, a Melbourne studio renowned for some of Australia’s most luxurious residential designs, there was another challenge: “I have
expensive taste but not the budget.” Nevertheless, all the thinking paid off because Rozen attained a house with a relaxed panache and managed to get three bedrooms, including an upstairs main and en suite, on to a 6.5-metre-wide footprint without it ever looking like a squeeze. What makes for the workability of this home is a cleverly executed central “timber box” or multifunctioning Blackbutt cabinetry super unit. Behind the black island bench are a sequence of cupboards that can close away the kitchen stuff and conceal by-catch chaos belonging to a household with two underfoot children. On the entry hallway side it houses the stairwell, which gives it a

Off the opposite corridor is a small laundry. “Turning another corner and on the fourth side of the box is a hidden doorway into the bathroom. “To keep some of the heritage of the house”, Rozen not only retained a brick side wall but replicated it on the opposing boundary. She then painted most of the walls white. To “reveal some of the beautiful red brickwork”, however, she made big chevron shapes by leaving some bricks naked. The arrowheads draw attention to “sharp angles” made by the living room’s 4.5-metre cathedral ceiling. “So the angle became one of the dominant shapes in the house”. ●

Make a move or improve HOW TO DECIDE WHAT’S BEST REGARDING THE FAMILY NEST love the character of your house? Or, is it an unwieldy nightmare that, if heritage rules allow, could be replaced by something more modern, comfortable, tailored and sustainable. In 2018 this line is so finely calibrated that both Fitzroy-Kelly and Le Get are constantly being called out to do appraisals to help owners decide what to do. “A lot of potential buyers approach us about this at open-for-inspections”, says Le Get. In fact, at one “beautifully located Blackburn property already worth $1.5 million”, he says that “all the buyers were looking to do a renovation”. In tightly held precincts where a poorly performing house might require $800.000 to remediate and extend, Fitzroy-Kelly says “you could spend the same on a new four-bedroom house with a pool”.

enovate or sell? That’s the $64,000-plus question that has multiple answers because there are so many variables to consider. In a real estate market that has gained such staggering growth and where the “burned money” of stamp duty involved in selling and re-buying says Jellis Craig Blackburn director Stephen Le Get, “is a major inhibition because it can so easily be $70.000 – $100,000 or more”, the question has become even harder to resolve. According to Le Get and Brighton building designer Jackson Fitzroy-Kelly of JFK Design, the cost difference between a major ($500,000-$1 million) renovation and doing a “detonation and new build” in the area you know and prefer is so negligible that, in essence, it comes down to sentiment: do you

The market has levelled out.” RENOVATE \ “If you’re going to stay for the long term. If you’d rather spend potential stamp fixing up a dated house in a location you love.”
Apart from these big-picture issues, the other major consideration is time. If it’s in the area you want and you plan to stay for the long term, Le Get says “a major extension or complete rebuild can warrant a big spend. But remember that both will always cost you more and take more time than you think. So buying an established house can be simpler”. Says Fitzroy-Kelly, “at the end of the day it is all about money. How much have you got to spend?” ●

“We see a very clear trend towards black as a very dominant colour within our colour range,” she says. Rob Sinclair of Melbourne-based business E&S Trading predicts that rose gold, brass, copper and bronze will remain popular, thanks to a number of fresh twists on the warm metals theme. One emerging strand is “live” copper and brass – untreated metals that have not been finished with a lacquer, allowing them to develop a beautiful patina. Other noteworthy developments include ribbed, coiled and embossed metals, and tapware that incorporates natural materials such as handles made of timber or stone. “It’s about bringing nature into the home,” he says. We’re talking about timeless design, not fads, and building better quality homes and renovations.” ●

apware is possibly one of the most underappreciated fixtures in the home – in addition to serving a vital function, the right set can also provide sculptural interest and inject some welcome bling to your kitchen, bathroom or laundry. (And that’s not even counting the fact that your tap handles are among the most touched surfaces in the house.) In terms of design directions for 2018 and beyond, industry experts expect black tapware to continue as a key trend, filtering through from interiors in magazines and on social media to new builds and renovations in the “real world”. The marketing director at Danish tapware maker VOLA, Copenhagen-based Birthe Tofting, says that black tapware adds a strong graphic element that sits well in minimalist settings.

hen it comes to design directions in tiling, industry experts agree on only one thing: diversity is the order of the day. Architect Thom McKenzie says Instagram and Pinterest are driving the trend, with a growing number of clients incorporating images found online into their project briefs. The sleek, blue-tiled bathroom at his recent Northcote project in Melbourne, designed to evoke blissful memories of swimming and bathing, has itself garnered significant attention on the social media platforms. “There seems to be a lot of simultaneous directions happening, because of the diversity of images available through online media platforms,” he says.

“It’s about eclecticism, the diffusion of multiple ideas and influences, combined with a much larger selection of tiles.” Interior designer Wendy Bergman, whose nostalgic, pink-tiled bathroom for the Mount Erica Hotel in Prahran (right) recently went viral online, says there are a profusion of colour trends, from soft, sandy colours to tropical, botanical-inspired shades. Interest in the Memphis Group – an influential coalition of Milanese designers founded in the 1980s, whose use of bright primary colours and bold patterns informed much of the decade’s design – is also enjoying a revival, she adds. “Pink is the flavour of the season, but it will have a time frame for sure,” she says. ●

lanning to renovate? According to a recent study of nearly 3500 renovators, there is a good chance it will start in the kitchen, with many making decluttering their main priority. The 2018 survey by Houzz Australia Kitchen Trends revealed that the average spend on a kitchen refurbishment was $19,300, making it a serious investment. Especially for those aged over 55, who will splash out significantly more than those under 35 ($20,800 versus $15,300). With 59 per cent cooking at home every day, it is not surprising that more than half will upsize their kitchens and six in 10 will switch their layout, with U-shaped and L-shaped layouts the most in demand (27 per cent each).
“We’re seeing a continued emphasis on the kitchen as a TIM TURNER / SMITH & SMITH KITCHENS

“Irrespective of generations, we’re seeing a continued emphasis on the kitchen as a common gathering area, with homeowners looking for ways to make the space more sleek and efficient,” says principal economist at Houzz Nino Sitchinava. “People are not only making kitchens larger and more open, but also choosing alternative layouts, elaborate cabinetry storage and versatile surface materials.” This year, 95 per cent will invest in a new benchtop, with 34 per cent opting for affordably luxe engineered quartz over laminate or granite. Island installations are most popular for homeowners between the ages of 35 and 54 (50 per cent) versus those under 35 and over 55 (45 and 39 per cent respectively). That’s not to say built-ins of all varieties are not in demand. Integrated pantries and breakfast bars are still desirable, with built-in islands the top choice for half of those surveyed between the ages of 35 and 54. With 33 per cent reporting they are tired of their existing kitchens, 90 per cent will overhaul their cabinetry, with the most common motivators a desire to make better use of space, improve efficiency and reduce clutter. Cutlery organisers, pull-out bins, deep drawers,
Update on the menu UNSURPRISINGLY, DECLUTTERING TOPS THE LIST OF PRIORITIES and pots and pans storage will be attacked first, with nine in 10 hiring a home professional to install, 59 per cent opting for custom-made and just 16 per cent opting for DIY styles. As with last year, 82 per cent will also plan an aesthetic overhaul. Most renovators aged between 35 and 54 will opt for clean contemporary styling, followed by modern (26 per cent), with just seven per cent choosing more traditional design. Given contemporary and modern’s new it-status, it’s no surprise that the most popular palette is a neutral one, with white the most coveted choice for walls, benches and splashbacks.
Recessed and pendant are the go-to lighting styles, while on the floor, ceramic and porcelain tiles again take a back seat to wood, with 32 per cent opting for stained or unstained. Along with the rest of the house, kitchens are set to become smarter, with homeowners upgrading everyday white goods and appliances with more high-tech models. ● Houzz did an online quantitative survey of registered Houzz users in Australia regarding kitchen renovation projects, fielded between September 18 and September 29, 2017.

What was the best thing about home ownership? Feeling like a grown-up for the first time in your life. Knowing that you’ve invested in your future in a way, and that the money you fork out each month isn’t going to someone else.
“There is so much pressure to make good decisions, the wrong one could financially devastate you.” - ALLISON LANGDON What’s the best household item you own (and why)? Right now, baby locks! My 13-month-old son is into everything, there isn’t an inch of our house that isn’t gated or locked. It feels like a fortress from within.
And the worst? The mortgage. Were you already schooled in the world of real estate or was it a big learning curve? It was a massive learning curve, even some of the language that is used initially confused me. There is so much pressure to make good decisions, the wrong one could financially devastate you.
If you could live in a dream house, anywhere in the world, where would it be? I know you’re asking anywhere in the world ... but I’m a homebody and one of my favourite places is Boomerang Beach on the NSW coast. I’d be more than happy to settle there, right on the beach. ● THE WEDDING ARCHITECT
What are your tips for organising a home? Don’t ask me, on the home front I’m incredibly disorganised. My husband, thankfully, is not. Do you have a favourite room? Back deck, specifically the day bed on the back deck. It gets gorgeous sunlight and is the perfect place to kick back with a good book.

Enduring Durie FURNITURE DESIGN IS THE NEW LANDSCAPE FOR THIS TV HOST
JAMES BRICKWOOD
H
e is famed as a gardening guru, but Jamie Durie has built an international furniture design business that has seen his empire move from the outdoors to the indoors. Though he is known and loved by television viewers for his “shorts and shovel” approach to landscaping, Durie admits his primary focus is now on living spaces inside the home. “I guess I’ve moved more into the internal space over the last 10 or 15 years. I mean, 80 per cent of what I do now is designing furniture and 80 per cent of that collection is indoor,” Durie says. “That’s through 55 relationships worldwide, collaborations I should say, most of them in Italy and the US. But a lot of that is starting to permeate here in Australia,” he says.
Durie’s high-end designs are already being stocked by stores in Sydney and Melbourne but he revealed he is also in talks with some of the nation’s largest retailers. The 47-year-old says he is committed to using responsibly sourced materials that “tread lightly on the environment” and making pieces for furniture that are considered heirloom pieces for families. “I’m not interested in designing disposable [pieces],” Durie says. Despite this new venture, Durie’s passion for gardening remains and he believes all Australian families can benefit from an increased amount of greenery indoors. However, his furniture designs take that ethos a step further by introducing the use of natural materials to fit out the family home.

“People find it a bit hard to [understand] why I moved from landscaping to furniture,” Durie says. “For me, that was a greater challenge in bringing nature into the home in the form of a piece of furniture.” He said he had been thrilled with the response so far to his designs. “People feel like they’re bringing something from the outdoors into their home in a sophisticated way. “That’s the perfect thing, I guess, that would help people understand what I’m bringing to the furniture world and why I’ve chosen that path.” Industrial design has been a gateway for a much wider audience – and market – for Durie’s work. “I can design one piece of furniture and that furniture could stay in production for 100 years and that one piece, that I’ve only designed once, could touch 10 million people,” he says. “So it’s much more gratifying for me to design one piece that gets to
touch 10 million people than design one garden that may only ever be viewed by one.” On top of his credentials in horticulture and landscape architecture, Durie studied industrial design 16 years ago. “My office is now filled with industrial designers and not so many landscape architects,” says Durie. “For me, it’s the exact same role, only, in my opinion, everyone’s got a living room, not everyone has [a] garden.” Durie, who credits Oprah Winfrey “wholly and solely” for his career being launched in the US, says he was excited about returning home this year. “I’ve always had an amazing relationship with Australia,” he says. ● Jamie Durie appears on The Living Room on Friday nights (Network Ten).

biquitous in magazine pages and the homes of flora fanatics everywhere, the fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) was arguably the “it” plant of 2017. Named for the shape of its distinctive leathery dark green leaves, the plant remains a popular option, however we think it’s time to turn over a new leaf and find out what the experts think is the most fashionable foliage of 2018. Enter: the Monstera deliciosa. “Bringing plants into a space is a relatively inexpensive, easy change that can make a space feel brighter and more cheerful,” says Claire Greenhill, a landscape architect, designer and plant expert for Perth-based plant consultants and concept store
Stackwood. Greenhill recommends indoor plants based on “beauty, impact, hardiness and the ability to survive a variety of conditions”, and is full of praise for the Monstera deliciosa. “Beautiful, big, hole-y, shiny, green leaves with a spreading trailing habit, this is a real feature plant,” she says. “It does grow quite large but pruning can maintain the size of this plant providing the owner with cuttings that are super easy to propagate in water.” Another top contender is the Ficus elastica, otherwise known as the rubber tree, a relative of the fiddle-leaf fig. “The rubber tree is a beautiful tree with large leathery leaves and glossy new growth,” Greenhill

says. “I love the cultivars with deep red to almost black foliage often sold as ‘Rubra’ or ‘Burgundy’ as they add contrast to plant groups where green abounds.” “There’s a global trend for organic-ness,” says Richard Misso, creative director of interior design firm the Stylesmiths. “People are moving away from things that are just shiny and new, and plants can really anchor a space and make it feel cosy and warm.” For Misso, when it comes to what’s on-trend, it’s all about the 1970s. “The 1970s are back in fashion in a major way, from high-waisted pants to oversized handbags and platforms,” he says. Indoor plants, it turns out, are no exception. “Monsteras were the plant of the 1970s, they’re indoor and outdoor, and the bigger the leaf the better,” he says. “So if you really want flexibility I think you can’t go past the Monstera.” Misso also affirms the rise of the rubber tree, as well as a move towards hanging gardens and ferns. Lauren Camilleri loves indoor plants. A lot. The owner of Sydney-based plant and design store Domus Botanica, she also runs a boutique plant delivery service, Leaf Supply, and recently co-wrote

a book on indoor plants with business partner Sophia Kaplan. “I love the way plants can soften a space and bring some much needed life,” Camilleri says. “I’m a big fan of lush foliage. The big graphic leaves of Monstera deliciosa, the trailing
variegated foliage of devil’s ivy, basically almost anything that creates serious jungle vibes.” For Camilleri, it’s easy to understand why the Monstera is in such high demand at the moment. “It’s a designer’s dream with those graphic holes and stunning heart-shaped foliage,” she says. “It was the plant that got me hooked on indoor gardening way back when. They make a really great statement or feature plant and are super lowmaintenance (unlike the fickle fiddle-leaf).” “There’s a real trend for the plants that were big in the 1970s and the Monstera definitely fits the bill.” “As a bit of a plant obsessive, I collect different varieties of Monstera, and all of them are such beautiful home plants,” says Bayden Packwood Hine, co-owner of Melbourne-based terrarium and plant supply store Plant by Packwood. “I love indoor plant classics like Monstera deliciosa and ‘devil’s ivy’ because they’re lush and green and easy to care for. They’re popular for a reason,” he says. ●

fter enjoying a phase of popularity in the 1970s, native gardens largely fell out of favour in Australian homes. But if you still view Australian-style gardens as outdated, hard to maintain or “woody”, it’s time to think again. Native Australian gardens are back – better than ever. Prominent landscape designer Sam Cox, who works exclusively on native gardens and is booked out for projects 12 to 18 months in advance, attributes some of this renewed enthusiasm to Aussies wanting to feel a deeper sense of belonging and connection to nature. “There seems to be a bit of a shift in the next generation looking to find that sense of place in where they live,” says Cox. “A lot of people now hike or ride bikes through the country and are looking for that relaxed nature that our natural environment can create for us.” Horticulturists have also been hard at work in the past few decades researching and creating “cultivars” or “hybridised” versions of natives that

“We try to imagine where these plants may have grown naturally and how they would have distributed themselves.” - SAM COX are easier to maintain. One of these plant breeders is native plant expert and co-author of bestselling book The Australian Native Garden, Angus Stewart. “Nurseries and plant breeders have been selecting better forms of native plants that are better suited to gardens and better performing, and that’s led to a resurgence in interest,” says Stewart. Surely this resurgence has also been due to our increased interest in sustainability. Natives are great at encouraging biodiversity by attracting wildlife such as insects (which pollinate the plants), birds and even bandicoots. And while native plants certainly do still require love and maintenance, they require less water than their non-native counterparts. Native plant specialist Glen Yearsley of Austplant Nursery and Gardens points out that the 3.3 hectares of gardens at his nursery survive purely on rainfall. To achieve this, Australian-style gardens must be carefully planned and designed. Cox follows three main design principles, all of
WO R D S ● JA N E H O N E
which centre on emulating natural patterns. His number one principle is “mass and void”. Voids are elements such as ponds, lawns or paved areas, and then plants and other objects represent the mass. Secondly, he “non-defines the boundaries” by blurring the lines and connecting to views in the background, allowing the space to feel bigger. Cox’s third principle is asymmetry in the planting. “We try to imagine where these plants may have grown naturally and how they would have distributed themselves,” says Cox. Yearsley adds that repetition in planting is important, “so when things are in flower you see it here and there and more over there, and then your foliages and your textures and your flowering times all start linking throughout the garden”. When it comes to planning and planting your native garden it’s essential that you do your research and speak to a professional. After all, the end game is a beautiful garden that can be appreciated for years to come. ●

roperty-wise, size does matter – the sales of Pavilion Green underline the appeal of larger residences in Bayside. Launched late last year, Pavilion Green’s first stage release offered 97 apartments, with 30 per cent sized 140 square metres or more internally. But buyer appetite for these larger residences has seen the total drop to 80 and now more than half the residences are above 140 square metres, says developer Tony Huang, managing director of Auyin Property Development. “We have been continually consolidating layouts to create fewer, larger apartments and have sold more than half of the first release,” he says. The success of the first stage’s larger apartments has influenced plans for the second, with 200 apartments likely to be reduced to 120, and a total of 200 rather than 300 for the completed project. The $120 million development features three architect-designed buildings set around an expansive courtyard garden. First stage construction starts in April, with completion by the end of 2019. ● LIZ MCLACHLAN

FEATURE HOUSE BLACK ROCK \ 25 ARDOYNE STREET 4

T
his magnificent house, built about 1940, might be slightly too antique for a mention in the new Bayside post-war heritage study. However, you can’t punch a hole in what must be one of the most painstaking renovations Black Rock has ever seen. The owners, here since 1993, have extended the house twice and spent years looking for the right clinker and old, red bricks to make a perfect match. Some rooms must be new – no one built such enormous, open-plan areas in the ’40s – but where are the seams? Invisible! Nestled in a quiet street a five-minute walk from the bay, the two-storey house is set to captivate a family seeking lots of indoor space and a large, north-facing garden. Art deco living and dining rooms, the modern family and meals area and an attic-style retreat offer communal areas for every mood. Bedrooms are cleverly zoned: a tranquil ground-floor main suite plus three on the first floor. Storage is ample, and the vintage details – polished timber doors, ornate ceilings, tiny latches and knobs – are awesome. The main bedroom, at the front, has a bay window guarded by a towering ficus hedge. Step through the mirrored walk-in wardrobe to the deco-style en suite. The carpeted living room has a glazed-brick open fireplace and a fretwork arch to the adjoining dining room. Silk-clad french doors lead to the pergola deck. The kitchen, family and meals area gleams in polished ash, with bay windows and french doors at both ends. In the kitchen, black granite and solid timber cabinetry look good amid Miele appliances and pantries with pull-out shelves. The laundry has a drying cupboard and a powder room. Take the deco staircase to the first floor, the centrepiece of which is a sparkling turquoise and white bathroom with a shower and bath. Two bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and the third has two walk-in cupboards, one of which leads thrillingly to a secret store room. The retreat, too, has superb storage in the roof. Should this provoke rowdy hide ’n’ seek, flush the kids into the garden, where a cubby, slide and spacious workshop wait invitingly on a sun-bathed lawn edged with roses. There's parking for two cars in the driveway. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domain.com.au
