MOUTHING OFF

tell us

W

ell, of course there’s life after year 12! Every student knows it, and that’s the problem. It’s the life after the neurosis-making years of 11 and 12 that you’re desperately striving for – the gap year, the course you actually want to study, the job, or just the pub – that makes these final weeks of exams and results so overwhelming. If you are a year 12 student reading this – or if some equally overwhelmed parent is reading this to you right now (and I’m sorry about that) – almost every pressure you can imagine stands between you and real life right now. There is life, and only life, after year 12: that’s the real point. I’m referring of course to the well-meaning campaign being run right now by the youth mental-health website Reach Out, trying to calm the flighty souls of final-year school students as they bow their heads and walk down the lonely race and onto the Hunger Games field that is year 12 exams. It’s a campaign, voiced by well-meaning, high-profile celebrities and others reassuring

students that their whole life will not be defined by a VCE score. It’s a nice sentiment but – with apologies to the good people at Reach Out and to all my colleagues who took part in the campaign – you’re too late. These kids have been told, warned, nagged, threatened since they were nine (sorry, scratch that: since they could form letters) that absolutely everything hinged on their year 12 mark, on their ENTER score, and on the ability of the school their parents chose for them to procure the most first-round university offers for their student body. The school has been playing its part, by funnelling these kids from the time of their very first NAPLANs into targeted streams of success; so now the kids have to play theirs, by working like buggery and getting the best final-year mark they possibly can. The rhetoric has been heavy for years, and these kids have absorbed it as they have their calcium and their fluoride: through their bones, in their teeth, as they laboured for years through a curriculum designed to make them and their school look as good as possible on that last Day of Judgment. OK, nothing wrong with working hard; absolutely nothing wrong with excelling. But, please, don’t come at these wild-eyed, exhausted, anxious kids now, all warm, fuzzy and Steiner-ey with this: “Oh, year 12 isn’t the

“the campaign’s sentiment is nice – but it’s too late” be-all and end-all; oh, your final mark doesn’t matter that much … oh, there’s LIFE after VCE, don’t you know!” Really? Where were you with all that accommodating stuff when they were in year 11? What drives me nuts is the inconsistency in the message. I can tell you there will be some equally frantic teachers who will not want to hear that the year 12 mark is not the most important thing right now: they’ve just expended their every cell on trying to make sure that for their students it is. I can only imagine how ridiculous it must sound to hear

now – now – that all of this work, all of this stress is not all that important after all. Here’s what I know: I know so many people who have taken the most unlikely routes in order to find their reason for being on this earth; very few of them have been sure about their journeys. Some regret them; some are enormously pleased about the life-affirming opportunities afforded by their missteps. But all of them, either through dint of their own personality or because of the loving guidance of someone close, had ready access to a deep understanding of joy: of what gave them joy, of what gave their life connection and purpose. And, while their year 12 mark might have mattered, or might not have mattered, what mattered most was their sense of self and their desire to find purpose. No campaign can help you find that but people you know, love and trust can help you light the way. Ask them to help you. And then let them help you. Go well. ● Virginia Trioli is co-host of ABC News Breakfast on ABC1 and ABC News 24, 6-9am weekdays

CAUSE CELEB PETER WILMOTH meets four MELBOURNE PERSONALITIES who are giving something back

I

n an age when social currency tends to be measured by the size of your Instagram following or making the guest list of the right Birdcage marquee, it’s heartening to know that celebrity status can be used for good instead of selfaggrandisement. This week, as we launch The Weekly Review’s Local Heroes campaign, celebrating those

in our community who devote themselves to helping others, we turn the spotlight on four celebrities who roll up their sleeves to help those in need. They are just the tiny, shining tip of an enormous iceberg of lesser-known heroes among us who work tirelessly – and often without fanfare – in the community, raising money, delivering food, caring for the ill or

elderly, or helping those less fortunate in any manner of ways. If you know such a person, go online and nominate them for TWR’s inaugural Local Heroes award. The most deserving entry will win a prize worth $10,000 to help their particular cause, while the person who nominates them will win dinner for two at the fabulous Sagra restaurant in Malvern. ●

“When you educate a girl, she brings four people out of poverty with her; It’s life-changing stuff” that. Ardoch goes in and troubleshoots with the kids who are at risk of leaving school.’’ Education is a passion for Chrissie. “My mother was a teacher, I loved school, I know I wouldn’t be where I am if I hadn’t gone to a great school and enjoyed education. I’m a writer, I care about words.” Chrissie helps Care Australia with campaigns to educate girls in developing countries “because education is the key out of poverty”. “When you educate a girl, she brings four people out of poverty with her; it’s life-changing stuff.” ● » www.ardoch.org.au » www.care.org.au

Chrissie Swan knows that leveraging her profile is the best way to help those who need it. “The advantage of having someone like me is that I can get on television, and on any given [show] you’re talking to 800,000 people,” she says. “It’s a great mystery [to me] why I’m in the public eye or that anyone would approach me to support something or that I could make a difference, so it took me a long time to work out that I could make a difference.” With three small children and a new role with Nova 100’s breakfast team in 2016 that will see her alarm clock going off at 4.30am, Chrissie is a busy woman. But she makes time for two charities: Care Australia, focusing on its work to help girls get an education both in Australia and in developing countries, and the Ardoch Youth Foundation, a charity providing education support for disadvantaged children and young people. “I chose two because I want to understand and believe in what I’m doing and have enough time to make a difference,” she says. “I don’t want to say, ‘Yeah, I’ll put my face on that’. That doesn’t suit me. And you get caught out; someone asks you about something and you say, ‘I don’t know’ – that’s not me.” Chrissie began her association with Care Australia five years ago, helping with various campaigns including a Walk in Her Shoes fundraising event to help reduce the distance women and girls in developing countries have to walk – by providing clean water and nutritious food close to home – meaning girls can spend more time in school. Chrissie conceived the idea for Chrissie Kringle, which encouraged people to “buy” a goat or a well to support communities in developing countries. “I do a lot of publicity, go on as many TV shows as I can,” she says. “I’m the face of their promotional material.” She says the commonality with Ardoch Youth Foundation is that it’s about education. “There’s a massive problem in our own country with education and I wasn’t aware of

Tim Rogers

Tim Rogers’ association with the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda began five years ago when his young daughter was away in the United States for Christmas with her mother. “It hit really hard and I was shocked,” he says. Christmas, he says, added “this extra level of piquantness, not having family around”. Tim – “not a big fan of Christmas” – decided to use the time productively. The lead singer of the band You Am I and now the Bamboos, and a resident of St Kilda for 16 years, decided to approach the mission to see if they could use his services. “The only job I do as well as sing a little bit out of tune is dishwashing, which is what I’ve done since I was about 16; lots of pizza restaurants around Australia,” he says. “I chanced my arm, turning up [at Sacred Heart] and volunteering. I wasn’t sure I’d get the gig. I like to do a good job with anything … I turned up and brought my own gloves, being the obsessive I am.” He need not have worried about being accepted. He was welcomed warmly and returned to wash dishes on Boxing Day as well. “I wish I’d done it a lot more during the year because at Christmas everyone shows up, ‘Oh, aren’t we great, we are wonderful people’, where during the year they need more hands on deck.” Tim enjoys the time he spends at the mission and says the roles are carefully defined. “I’m a porcelain specialist. I’m a better dishwasher than I am a waiter.” He says the kitchen environment has much in common with that of the band room. “It’s the banter, trading stories. If you work in a kitchen, you’ve

got to have good stories. If you’ve got good stories you’ve got value, like a six-foot-six full forward.” This year Tim hopes to do the stretch – three to four days over Christmas at the mission. “It’s their busiest time of the year and a pretty heavy emotional time as well. Around Christmas … if you are kind of a loner, estranged, it can hit a little harder around then, whether you’re religious or not. And I found it did to me. “I thought if I go down there for a couple of hours and if that’s helping people who are far worse off [then good]. I look around and think, ‘I could be needing Sacred Heart’s help in a couple of years’. I’ve had bad years and bad times and health issues so I figure I’m putting in so I’ll get a seat for lunch when I need it.” Do people recognise him? “Not a lot. A few folks mistake me for an uglier version of Tex Perkins or the guitarist in Powderfinger or Tim Freedman, which I’ll never accept.” ● » www.sacredheartmission.org

Ian Curley

supports st vincent de paul & pancare foundation Today Ian Curley is one of Melbourne’s most revered chefs, presiding over the kitchens at the eternally fashionable The European with its chic Supper Club lounge and rooftop bar Siglo. But he reflects that if he had not received guidance, things could have turned out very differently. “I didn’t come from the best start,” he says. “I genuinely believe that you’re only three bad decisions away from being homeless or in real strife.” Before moving to Australia in 1988, Ian spent his sometimes wild youth in Coventry, England, “fighting, essentially, in little street gangs,” he says. He spent some time in a youth detention centre. “It was to do with football hooliganism and being a troublemaker. I did time in a juvenile prison for young offenders, where they say, ‘If you’re going to carry on this way, you’re going to the big house’. “My mother and father came to visit me over Christmas and I thought, ‘Why am I making them do this on Boxing Day when they’re leaving the rest of the family at home to come and visit me?’. You feel about this big and you think, ‘This is not the life for me, I’m not that bright, I’m not going to be the world’s greatest criminal, I don’t have the heart for it’, so I tried to put my head in the right space. “I could have gone either way. I went into cooking to get away from being a troublemaker and it worked for me.” When he became successful, Ian decided to give back by helping others change their lives. Among the several groups he helps with his time and skills is the St Vincent de Paul Society. He has contributed to

Megan Gale

supports ovarian cancer research foundation Megan Gale knows that one of the best uses of celebrity is the chance to give something back. “I think there should be an obligation to do it,” she says. “I think [it’s great] if you can use your profile as a tool to raise awareness and especially for a cause like [ovarian cancer], which I didn’t have an awareness of before.” Megan has been involved with the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation for four years. It began when she came on board as an ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, which had formed a partnership with the foundation in 2009 to help raise funds and awareness. The facts about ovarian cancer are shocking. It’s the fourth-most-common cancer affecting women. The foundation says that each year about 1500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Australia, and every 10 hours one woman dies from the disease in this country. Crucially, there’s no early detection test. The ultimate aim of the foundation is to develop a non-invasive and cost-effective test

many events for youth projects over the years, sometimes working with people with drug and alcohol issues. “People need a hand up sometimes. I had a hand up. People gave me good advice.” His most hands-on involvement has been working at a Fitzroy residential facility, teaching cooking and life skills to 14 people dealing with substance abuse. “It’s a detox house where they’re tested every day so if they’ve taken drugs or alcohol they’re asked to leave,” he says. “I would teach them cooking, how to make pasta, meatballs, try and fend for themselves,

“people need a hand up sometimes. i had a hand up. people gave me good advice” shop on a budget, how to make a risotto that’s nutritious, how to make your dollar stretch further. Some of these people have never had to cook for themselves. I think if I can impart some sort of knowledge to them, more power to me.” Ian also donates his time to the Pancare Foundation, which supports research projects into pancreatic, liver, biliary, oesophageal and stomach cancers, as well as the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation and the Starlight Children’s Foundation. For the Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda, he contributed to the Dine With Heart dinner at the Palais Theatre, where 10 of Melbourne’s best chefs donated their time. ● » www.vinnies.org.au » www.pancare.org.au

that will one day become part of women’s regular health checks. “I was humbled and shocked to learn some of the statistics about ovarian cancer,” Megan says. “There was a lot I didn’t know about the disease. I didn’t know you couldn’t get an early detection test. I just assumed, that like breast cancer or cervical cancer, if you were diligent about your health, you could go along and have a check-up. [With ovarian cancer] you can’t. “I’ve probably been lucky that no one I know has been affected by it. However 10 years ago I could say I didn’t know anyone who had cancer, but now I can count with more than two hands.” How has her involvement changed her? “It puts life in perspective. It makes you realise all these other little things that we get stressed about from day to day – it matters but it’s not the be-all and end-all. What really matters is our health and our happiness and our family and the people we love and that they’re OK, and that’s really it. ” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au » ocrf.com.au

Trust me, I have had years of experience. And I often do wonder if a better way to connect apart from over a few chilled chardonnays has ever been invented. It’s not always good for us, especially the next day, but having a few with the ladies can often have a gear-shifting effect. Nothing can dust out the day-to-day cobwebs better than a wine, a whine and a shoeless dance to Madonna. This I report after getting through a full month of socialising. Was everyone born in October? So busy was I, I had to email the other adult in this house to make sure he had all my going-out dates in his calendar. No offence to him intended at all here, but once you’ve had kids there’s nothing more fun than leaving your partner at home with them, and going out by yourself. No need to rush home for the babysitter is one reason and

room, although on white wine there are no guarantees. If you pass this point, which doesn’t always happen and for good reason – like sometimes you’ve just got to go home and be a grown-up – what can well follow is the “I love you” period. It is when everyone has an urge to tell everyone else how much they appreciate them. If you have the staying power – and at some stage in the night admitted to yourself that hell, you can deal with the after-effects

tomorrow, you’re going to leave the car and order an Espresso Martini – this is one of the more excellent periods in the life of an evening because, no matter how strong or aloof or sober someone might appear to be, everyone loves to be told they are loved, even if the person sharing it just fell over. This is also usually the time people start admitting things – past love affairs, that period when they thought you were a bitch, the use of substances other than moisturiser to maintain their youthful glow. There can also be meltdowns, when those who may well have maintained good hair all evening will lay their head on the table and tell you things they’ve never admitted to anyone – their marriage is on the rocks, their boobs aren’t real, or they ran over the cat. For this reason, and also because around now it’s game on for red-wine lips and loud singing, staying the distance can have its advantages. As we move into silly season the only advice I have is make sure you don’t miss out. ● khall@theweeklyreview.co.au

THE VIBE \ Serving up excellent Nepalese and Indian food, Nirankar has been a mainstay of the city’s multicultural culinary landscape for nearly 25 years. THE DECOR \ Elegantly exotic with drapes, lanterns, a slick bar area and spacious dining room for up to 120 guests. e food writers live to discover a new ingredient. So I raced across to Fitzroy with a couple of buddies as soon as I learnt about Saba’s Ethiopian restaurant. It’s well-suited to its Brunswick Street location, with bold red feature walls and a collection of colourful baskets clustered and hung as artwork. Saba Alemayoh and her mother Tekebash Gebre run the restaurant. Tekebash does most of the cooking and Saba is a delightful host. The initial claim to my attention is their use of teff flour to create injera, a traditional Ethiopian flatbread. Teff is an ancient grain, smaller than a poppy seed, similar to quinoa, and gluten-free. Saba imports it and has it milled at Melbourne Milling in Box Hill South. She has her eye on a new grower in Victoria. Saba, an Australian from the age of nine, had been running a health food and catering business before opening the restaurant in late August. Food is served on big, flat plates, lined with injera, that fit into colourful baskets. Dishes arrive in separate bowls that are overturned onto the flatbread. There’s no cutlery (unless you really want it), so tear pieces of the bread and use them to scoop up curries, dhal and stews. The injera is spongy and delicate, with a fermented, yeasty tang that’s a natural offset to the chilli used in most dishes. We order

THE FOOD \ Nirankar’s Nepalese offerings are a delight. Try the delicious ‘MoMo’ dumplings or the famous Himalayan goat curry. Vegans, vegetarians and gluten free diners are well looked after.

Vegetarians are well-nourished and

THE DRINK INK \ There’s an extensive Australian wine list as well as mocktails, cocktails and Kingfisher beer on the tap.

Saba says the restaurant will cater for food intolerances with prior notice. She also makes caramelly, dense chocolate brownies from teff flour; that was a bonus discovery. ● LEANNE TOLRA ltolra@theweeklyreview.com.au

ow-alcohol wines are so hot right now. It’s a trend I wholly support, but I find the wines rarely hit the mark. There’s a couple of ways lower-alcohol wines are made and both can compromise the product. Grapes can be picked early when they contain less sugar (and lower alcohol) but this means they’re also missing flavour. Alcohol can also be removed using reverse osmosis but this can make the wines feel thin and unbalanced. There is one low-alcohol Australian classic that has been picked early for the past 50 years and has alcohol levels at 10-11 per cent. It’s Hunter Valley semillon. Semillon is grown around the world – it’s the white grape of Bordeaux and Sauternes – and widely in Australia. For some reason it’s the soils and climate of the Hunter Valley that does it best. Semillon’s a curious grape. Its large berries are quite delicate and require hand harvesting. The best examples are picked just before it fully ripens. Incredibly long-lived, young semillon develops

Sarah says she likes that Trudy’s transformation isn’t the predictable fairytale it might seem. While some actors would be chafing for more lead roles, Sarah says there are definite bonuses in taking the smaller parts. “Part of that is being able to be part of films that are telling great stories and have wonderful actors and actresses at the helm. t’s been a big year for Sarah Snook. There’s scarcely been a new Australian film or TV series released without the Adelaide-born actor’s name in the credits. She’s had lead roles in The Secret River and The Beautiful Lie (currently showing on ABC), while notching up scene-stealing supporting roles in Holding The Man and The Dressmaker. Major celebrity seems imminent. “It’s surreal,” Sarah says. “You put your head down and do what you do and suddenly they all come out at once.” In person, Sarah is graceful, self-effacing and strikingly glamorous. Part of her success as an actor is to make you forget all that. While she shines as a leading lady, her real talent is as a character actor, crafting roles that are flawed, unpredictable, even gawky. The Dressmaker makes a virtue out of such unpredictability. On the surface it’s a snappy and savage revenge comedy, but director Jocelyn Moorhouse builds in elements of classical tragedy, musical and spaghetti western. It’s also an all-too-rare thing – a crowd-pleasing Australian film that’s as clever as it is fun. Sarah’s role allows her to flaunt her extremes

BRITISH FILM FESTIVAL FESTIVAL I’m not sure when British film became a niche event, but this third season of cinema from the UK is packed with treats that might otherwise have skipped Australian theatres (including Spooks: The Greater Good). That said, the standout titles are only tenuously British. Heartwarming drama Brooklyn sees a southern Irish girl caught between home and a new life in New York, while Italian director Paolo Sorrentino pairs Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel for late-life buddy comedy Youth. ■ Palace Cinemas, October 28 – November 18, britishfilmfestival.com.au

Intended as a companion to The Essential Leunig Leunig, this new tome collects another 400 cartoons from Leunig’s 50-year career. The selection beautifully illustrates the relentless, if trampled, optimism that seems to motivate the Melbourne artist. There’s a sense of the bipolar to his work, swinging between naivety and cynicism, silliness and bitterness, the scabrous and the poetic, rapturous joy to thunderous melancholy. ● ONLINE \ See our gallery of cartoons from The Wayward Leunig

On record number five, Sarah Blasko is getting ambitious. In place of the lush darkness of her last LP is bright, bold pop. Her voice has never sounded better, swooping from rasping falsetto to low rumble. Opener I Am Ready sets the tone – blasts of ’80s synth and a belting chorus. I Wanna Be Your Man swoons and shimmies, but there’s no missing its sharp message. Diamonds are a family affair for David East Jewellers’ Jarrod Rubenstein and his father Morry. “When somebody buys a piece of jewellery it’s something that they’re going to keep forever, and pass on,” Morry says. “It’s a happy, emotional occasion in people’s lives.” Who’s behind the counter David East Jewellers was the oldest tenant at Westfield Doncaster, and after 40 successful years serving customers in suburban Melbourne, the family business relocated to the heart of the CBD. “Longevity in the jewellery industry speaks for itself,” says Morry, a registered valuer. “It shows that customers know you’re honest and that they’re getting a quality product.” For Jarrod, collaborating with clients to design the perfect piece is key. “It’s rewarding to see them happy and satisfied with what we create with them.” What’s in store Fine jewellery from engagement rings and diamond-set wedding bands to pink Argyle diamonds, sapphire, emerald and ruby rings, earrings and pendants. Clients often custom design pieces, and much of the range is made in Melbourne. “Every stone has its own life and personality,” Morry says. For gents, there are timepieces including the full range of Swiss Bulova watches.

The promise An absolute treat for kids, Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium is home to more than 10,000 aquatic animals, including grey nurse sharks, stingrays, cute fish, turtles and frogs, and the rather terrifying saltwater crocodile Pinjarra.

The pain factor Zero, unless seeing a 750-kilo croc hanging out in its very big tank scares you. Parking in the city can cost a bomb, so make sure you get your discount voucher from the aquarium when you buy your tickets.

The reality A tour of the aquarium takes visitors through various watery habitats. Marvel at spiral shark eggs and pat a starfish in the rock pool. Watch tiny Nemos swim among bright-coloured coral in the coral caves and see shark, ray and eel species in the Mermaid Garden, a giant, enclosed tank with a tunnel that offers a unique view of the sea life. Hang out in the penguin playground to see different species of penguins swim and nest, and visit the 4D cinema for an interactive learning experience.

Who should do it? While the aquarium’s design is pitched largely at kids, it’s just as fun to go as an adult. There are lots of fast facts on the different species on display, and information about the importance of conservation.

The pay-off The design of the aquarium is perfect for kids, with lift and ramp access for prams and wheelchairs, and plenty of crawl spaces with viewing holes, allowing views of the tanks from a different perspective.

The bill $40.50 for an adult, $26 for a child.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

Yes. No matter what your age, Sea Life Aquarium is an interactive and intriguing place to visit again and again. ● Sea Life Aquarium Corner of Flinders and King streets, Melbourne, 1800 026 576. www.melbourneaquarium.com.au

With the building having only 14 private residences it’s sure to set your heart racing. You’ll love & enjoy this rare beauty for many years to come. Spread over 3 levels of living & entertaining with timber floors throughout, this apartment is incredibly private & serene. It offers 3 bedrooms with BIR’s & 2 full sized designer bathrooms. The living spaces have accommodated many enjoyable evenings for privileged guests who then invariably move upstairs to an incredible landscaped private & on title rooftop terrace that is a true city oasis. This unique & magical space was designed by Green Bits & the huge range of landscaped plants sourced from Fitzroy Nursery. It’s city living at its best with its central Flinders Lane location which allows you to step out to the most desirable cafes, Collins Street boutiques & an array of award winning restaurants.

A triumvirate of Italianate arches adorn the verandah of this late Victorian terrace house named Truro. There are polished floorboards throughout the ground floor, with ceiling roses and an arch in the long hallway. Huge sash windows in the front bedroom show off beautifully aged timber frames and there’s a striking fireplace. A formal lounge with an even more ornate fireplace is open to the hallway. Exposed brick walls add a contemporary feel as a sympathetic extension takes over. Deep blue tiles line the laundry and shower room, making a reappearance in the kitchen with its stainless-steel Technika oven and breakfast bar. It looks on to a bright living area with french doors at the far end. Climb the staircase and three large bedrooms all have built-in wardrobes. The rear one has french doors to its own balcony, while another has a fireplace. They share a shower room with circular skylight. A courtyard at the back is laid out in a radial pattern and shaded from the northern sun by established trees. The property has a one-car garage. ● STEPHEN A. RUSSELL

This 100-year-old weatherboard cottage has the most demure facade in the street, artfully concealing its rebirth as a contemporary beauty poised for parties and sunshine. Two bedrooms open off an arched hall, maintaining the Edwardian pride. The rear living area, however, is open plan, and with its vaulted ceiling and full-length windows it basks in year-round radiance. French doors lead north to the new deck, which has a canvas gazebo and built-in storage. A fence made from salvaged doors provides the essential northside design solution and has a gate to a right-of-way. The vendors have renovated the kitchen, which has a 900-millimetre Ariston gas range and a massive benchtop made from recycled messmate. The large bathroom/laundry, also recently updated has a spa with shower above. The house has heating, closed-circuit TV, attic storage and a potential off-street parking space in front. Close to Northcote High, Merri Creek and Northcote station, it has the best of its neighbourhood within a short walk. ● ALISON BARCLAY
