Shapes crossed my threshold. Some foods are culinary cocaine! Could anyone stop at one Barbecue Shape? Sure, you can fold the special stay-crisp packet away in a hermetically sealed and locked box and toss the key over the Iguazu Falls, but then what happens? Next thing you are in a darkened room with an empty box and busted chains dangling from your wrists, cackling to yourself. And what do they expect? It is, according to the advertising slogan, “flavour you can see” see”. My husband was alarmed that this small box had unwittingly wrought such angst. But, look, he said – reading from the packet – “It’s light & crispy. It’s the flavour hit you can feel good about. A flavour hit with lighter crunch.” Yes, it’s true there’s a modest calorific reduction on the traditional Shapes versus the “light & crispy” version but, by and large, the biggest Shapes-shifting has occurred by reducing contents from 250 grams in the mid-’90s to 200g in 2011 and now to 120g. Arnott’s is not alone in this process of downsizing quantities and trumpeting them as improvements. For example, Peckish rice crackers have recently become thinner, therefore lighter and crispier, while the Fantastic brand now offers

o, we all know modern society makes it almost impossible for the male of the species to maintain the traditional hunter-gatherer role, but my husband – bless him – still tries. As designated shopper, each week he faces the fiendish psychology of supermarket product placement, the dizzying selection of brands and terrifying understorey of toddlers – all the while wrestling with lists, price comparisons and trolley – to emerge triumphant with goods. Sweet chap that he is, this almost always includes a “surprise” for me: perhaps dark chocolate with sea salt, a wedge of really good cheese or a king prawn or 10. I’ve come to relish unpacking the groceries, but this week I hit the “surprise” and recoiled much as if the offering was a chewed mouse on the doormat, or maybe even … on my pillowcase. Not since I was in my early 20s and living in a shared house above a butcher’s shop, where peak nutrition was Keen’s curried surplus sausages with tinned pineapple, have Arnott’s

tell us

the “Thinner Bite” that’s “30 per cent thinner”. It doesn’t mean these attributes will extend in any physical way to the consumer, just that you might not be able to see the biscuits if you stand them sideways. Arnott’s Shapes were first produced in Victoria in the 1950s and today 53 million packets of Shapes are reportedly consumed in Australia each year, with the Arnott’s biscuit brand found in 95 per cent of households. According to Wikipedia, Shapes “were originally made in the shape of potato chips, but were too difficult to cut and bakers realised were a waste of dough”. Not a lot has changed really, except of course Arnott’s is no longer Australian and it’s only the biscuits that are losing weight. ● sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au Virginia Trioli is on leave

NOVEMBER 25, 2015 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 7

S

inger-songwriter James Keogh, known to the world as Vance Joy, is in Sausalito, San Francisco, taking a break from supporting Taylor Swift on her colossal 1989 tour. Across hemispheres and through a crackling phone connection, the 27-year-old tells us he has spent his day off bike riding around town and just “hanging out”. That’s the most surprising thing about James – he’s grounded, normal, a former school captain boy-next-door you might want to take home to meet your mum. Except, of course, that this politely spoken bloke from suburban Melbourne has penned a song that’s garnered more than 96 million views on YouTube and has caught the attention of one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. When I ask what it’s like playing stadiums filled with adoring Taylor Swift fans, James is typically humble. “It’s just a different world to anything I’ve ever been exposed to,” he says. “I used to just think performing was about going and playing a set, getting in and getting out, but now I see the bar raised in terms of what you can do on stage, and what’s possible with a show.” It’s just over two-and-a-half years since James released his debut EP in March 2013 under the Vance Joy moniker. A sepia-tinged folk record called God Loves You When You’re Dancing Dancing, it’s the kind of album that simultaneously inspires melancholic reverie and an irrepressible desire to grab someone you love and whirl them around the dance floor. Chances are you’re as familiar with the EP’s breakout tune as you are with an old friend. The toe-tapping strains of Riptide have been almost inescapable for the past few years. The song topped the Triple J Hottest 100 in 2013 and has been on high rotation at commercial radio stations and backyard barbecue playlists across the globe ever since. In May this year, Riptide surpassed Lady Gaga’s Poker Face to smash the record for the longest-charting song on ARIA’s top 100 singles chart. For all of Riptide’s multitude of fans across the world, one person’s appreciation has made the greatest impact. While James was driving around Amsterdam late last year, on a promotional tour for his debut album Dream Your Life Away Away, his manager was sitting across from him watching one of the hundreds of cover versions of his infectious song that you’ll find scrolling through YouTube. “I was just like, ‘That sounds awesome, really cool, who’s that?’,” James says. “My manager kind of kept the screen to herself – I think she wanted to surprise me. Then she turned around and it was Taylor Swift in the BBC Live Lounge.” Shortly after, Taylor’s management tapped James on the shoulder and he said yes to opening for her on her 1989 tour. It’s hard to conceive that just three years ago, James had completed an arts/law degree at Monash University, was playing semi-professional football for Coburg Football Club and harbouring a “vague ambition” to pursue music. He shelled out $700 to hire a Brunswick studio for the day to record Riptide with his drummer. He never imagined that the song would resonate around the globe, or that Taylor Swift would hear his music, let alone record it.

the

ride

“You want to dream big and have ideas of what would be the ultimate thing,” he says. “But sometimes your dreams come out of left field; you’re not really prepared for them and you don’t expect them.” There were months of excitement and nervous energy leading up to the 1989 tour. Now, more than six months in, James is getting accustomed to the routine of life on the road with a pop superstar – from the banalities of waiting around for sound checks, to tour buses filled with musicians and crew rolling into cities across the United States alongside “a legion of trucks with Taylor’s face on them”. “There’s a real sense of a travelling show, a community,” James says.

A

s a child, James spent car rides listening to stacks of his parents’ CDs by songsmiths such as Ben Folds and Tim Freedman of the Whitlams, but it was Australia’s own poet laureate of song, Paul Kelly, who really captured his imagination when he was five. “Songs that stuck out to me were Dumb Things and To Her Door Door. I definitely fell in love with both those songs when I was little. I remember loving them so much and singing along in the car. I didn’t even really know what the lyrics meant, but they just hit me,” he says. When he was 14, his father bought him a Squier electric guitar and amp and told him that lessons were impending. “I never really liked learning theory, and I was really anti the idea of lessons,” James says with a laugh. Despite his initial reluctance, his guitar playing progressed on a diet of Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and he began amusing himself and friends by penning funny ditties. “I’d get a song that everyone knew, like Time of Your Life, and I’d change the lyrics,”

he says. “I played it at my school formal in year 12 and at assembly. I guess that skill of putting lyrics in a place, and working out how to fit words along a melody, was really the start of songwriting.” James was 21 when he penned the first song he was really proud of. “I wanted to write a song that kind of said it all. It was a simple love song but way better than anything I’d ever written before,” he says. “Once you’ve got that writing bug, and that feeling of putting together a song that feels right, it’s the best feeling you can have. You’re just sort of like, ‘How did I do that?’.” He credits his mother, an English teacher, with helping him craft the lyrics to his early songs and admits that even today his mum might help him workshop a turn of phrase while his father will email him ideas for songs. “My mum doesn’t like me saying this, but she helped me with Mess is Mine,” James says of the mournful, rousing ballad from Dream Your Life Away Away. “‘You still make sense to me, your mess is mine’ – that was mum’s line, so she should get credit for that one.” James’ early creativity was also nurtured at St Kevin’s College in Toorak, where he met creative, like-minded peers including Jaddan Comerford, who first recognised his talent and remains one of his two managers (the other is Rachael Tulloch). Another schoolmate was Nick Murphy, aka pop star Chet Faker. Nick, a crucial musical inspiration, graduated from school the year after James and went on to top Triple J’s Hottest 100 in 2014 for his track Talk is Cheap, making it back-to-back wins for St Kevin’s Old Boys following James' 2013 win with Riptide. “That is a crazy coincidence,” James says. “We were friends and still are. I think he’s an incredible musician and a great producer and songwriter. Looking at him and seeing

what he could do definitely made me go, ‘If you believe in what you’re doing it’s not impossible to step into that world’. Because people initially said, ‘You’re crazy’, you know. It’s weird to think that had I not been in that place at that right time, things would’ve been different for sure. “That was the kind of creative environment my school created. I had a really strong connection and attraction to the people who were creative and liked music and wanted to make music – whatever that personality is that allows someone to put themselves out there to be funny, creative and strange.”

B

“Sometimes your dreams come out of left field; You’re not really prepared for them”

eing funny, creative and strange – and being in the right place at the right time with more than a modicum of talent – has launched James on a wild ride. “I’m probably not the target audience for Taylor Swift shows, but I’m not immune to being moved by it,” he says. “It’s so epic that when I have friends on the road I just want to bring them back and experience it. Even my bass player from Melbourne – his natural taste is heavier rock music and he has his own doom metal band – but he watched the show and told me he was getting chills. “I’ve experienced that as well, being so overwhelmed because people are having so much fun and screaming, the production is so high, the dancers have so much passion and conviction, and Taylor’s belting it out. So it’s pretty inspiring watching her show.” James' whirlwind journey will come full circle when he returns to his home town to open for Taylor Swift at AAMI Park on December 10. But first he’ll stop off in Sydney for this week’s ARIA Awards, where he is a hot tip for seven gongs including Album of the Year for Dream Your Life Away Away, Song of the Year for Georgia and Best Male Talent. After all the craziness of life on the road, what he’s most looking forward to about coming home are the simple things: crashing at his folks’ place and “driving to the gig in my car; I reckon that’ll be funny”. So, how does it feel to go from playing to 300 people at The Toff in Town to performing for a crowd of 30,000 in your home town? “I remember that Toff gig and being up there and totally nervous – so some of those first steps were harder than these recent ones,” he says. “It is still wacky, it’s still crazy. To think that I’m playing on tour with Taylor Swift – I never would’ve dreamt it four years ago when I wasn’t really doing anything and all I had was a vague ambition to do music. “So that gives me so much belief that you can do anything. You sort of think, ‘Hey, maybe I could do this. I could put my hat in the ring and do it’.” ● ilane@theweeklyreview.com.au

WATCH THIS FACE GEORGE MAPLE \ SINGER

Australian singer George Maple – real name Jessica Higgs – opted for a pseudonym and anonymity when she started making soul-inspired electronic music in 2013. She’s now signed to Future Classic [home of Chet Faker] and sold out her first-ever headline show in Los Angeles. She wooed crowds at Coachella in Palm Springs in April and has been asked to make the Spotify list. She’s one part soul, two parts electronica and there’s plenty of anticipation surrounding a debut album release.

Look out for …

Australian rap artist Tkay Maidza has shared a new track featuring the talents of George Maple as well as Baauer and What So Not.

months ago – her first as George Maple. She discovered music through her parents’ record collection – Sade, Jeff Buckley and Etta James and, at 16, got into R&B. She’s all about bridging the gap between pop music and electronic production.

“i’m ready for anything now”

The big break … Meeting Nathan McLay, the founder of indie record company Future Classic, who she ran into a few years ago at Field Day music festival. He casually asked her to sign to his label, which is also home to most of her friends. The label is often described as a global power broker for Australian electronic music.

What’s the buzz? Her debut EP Vacant Space, recorded between London, Los Angeles and Sydney and released last October, debuted at number three on the Australian iTunes album charts. It features the single Talk, Talk and Where You End And I Begin [starring Philadelphian rapper GrandeMarshall]. She sold out a headline show at The Lyric Theatre in Los Angeles this year and played with the Broods at a sold-out New York show at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

The best part about success? “The people and the music. They make it all worthwhile,” she says. “I’m ready for anything now. It’s exciting to know anything can happen.” (SUPPLIED)

In the beginning … George made her dream come true by following her heart. She packed her bags and moved to London at 22, worked as a ghostwriter and collaborated with musicians. She wowed audiences at SXSW and CMJ and toured Australia a few

Where to now? In December she’s heading for Rottnest Island, where she’ll be playing Hotel Rottnest.

MAYHEM & MASCARAS dhav Naidu gets set for the arrival of a beauty behomoth

W

hen global beauty behemoth Sephora opened its first Australian store in Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall last year, the frenzied scenes were likened to a One Direction concert. Beauty addicts camped out overnight and thousands queued down the street in anticipation of Sephora’s bargain prices, huge product range and hands-on shopping experience. Despite grumblings on social media that the Australian prices were not as low as the company had promised and that the product range was smaller than that offered overseas, throngs still flocked to see what the fuss was about and nab one of the generous opening-day gift bags. Now the phenomenon is coming to Melbourne, opening in Melbourne Central on Saturday. Covering more than 550 square metres and with 65 brands on display, it’s a daunting shopping proposition, so you’re going to need a game plan.

Sephora opening \ sydney 2014

What’s so different?

Sephora Australia country manager Libby Amelia says the retailer is always looking for the next big beauty brand and offers consumers the latest trends and products from around the globe with great promotions and gifts with purchase. “Sephora is divided into several different worlds [skincare, fragrance, make-up, haircare, bath and body],” she says. “We have a self-service model, where the customer is encouraged to play, try and explore on their own … Beauty advisers are always available for customers seeking information, service and expertise.” For me, the big attractions are the generous samples, Sephora brushes, the fragrance wall and the free mini manicures and makeovers.

Who could have predicted a small shop opened in Limoges in 1969 would one day revolutionise the way we shop for beauty? When Dominique Mandonnaud threw open the doors of the first Sephora, it was a ground-breaking concept; for the first time customers could touch, feel and try products without the steely gaze of shop assistants. Since then Sephora has burgeoned into a global beauty powerhouse. Now owned by luxury goods giant, LVMH, it has more than 2000 shops worldwide (the Melbourne outlet will be Australia’s third) and sales of more than $4 billion. The largest store, on the Champs-Elysees in Paris, gets nearly six million visitors a year.

worth the hype?

Despite the controversy about whether or not Sephora has delivered on its promise to end price gouging for Australian beauty consumers, local prices are certainly competitive. Although stores here won’t get the full range stocked in the US and Europe, there’s still a huge choice of products, many not found elsewhere.

inomofo’s Richmond headquarters thrums with the energy of a start-up that has hit the big time. There is an expensive-looking coffee machine that is almost always in use, a well-stocked wine bar for tastings, and a distinct air of merriment among the company’s 56 workers, many of whom wear the uniform of their inner-city customer base: T-shirts with ironic slogans and expensive jeans. Vinomofo’s wine deals site – which ships wine from its warehouse to more than 300,000 enthusiasts across the country at discounted prices – is growing at about 10 per cent a month and has an annual turnover of more than $50 million. Its energetic founders Andre Eikmeier, 43, and Justin Dry, 37, hope to expand into the US, British and Chinese markets in coming years to further cement their reputation as the wine site of choice among hipsters and enthusiasts. Such is their level of success it is difficult to imagine there was a period – years and years, in fact – when brothers-in-law Andre and Justin had their backs against the wall. The pair point to the Christmas of 2010, at the Dry family home in Adelaide, as a time of immense soul-searching. They had been struggling to make money out of their Qwoff wine community – an online forum for discussing and reviewing wines – for a couple of years, and were toying with taking other jobs to make ends meet. “Each Christmas, my sister was taking me aside and asking if it was going to get any better because by that stage she and Andre had two young kids,” Justin says. “I just kept

telling her to stick with us, but we thought if it didn’t get better we would go and get a job because we couldn’t keep dragging our families through it.” Then Justin came up with the idea that was to dramatically reverse their fortunes. What if they sold wine to their dedicated wine tribe on Qwoff? They had great relationships with producers and they could deal with the wineries directly (thereby cutting out the middle man) and sell wine they had selected at a fraction of the retail price. So, on April 11, 2011, Vinomofo was born. “I could see it was one of those obvious things; I absolutely knew if we did it right and we got the model right it would be successful,” Justin says. “I realise now there is a time for ideas and you have to be in front of the wave and ready. A lot of my ideas were way too early, but you have to ask, ‘What trend is about to hit in a big way?’ and then you can jump on that wave.” A wine site was a natural fit for the duo. Justin’s ancestors planted some of the first

Andre has spent years producing videos for the wine industry, and had always been a keen appreciator of wine. Nevertheless, he had his doubts about a wine deals site. “I thought it was a s--- idea,” he says, laughing. “I was afraid that commercialising our wine reviews would be bad and I thought that selling was dirty. But our Qwoff wine tribe told us as long as we kept the integrity of the service, and because they trusted our taste in wine, they would buy from us.” Vinomofo’s customer base grew quickly, but there have still been plenty of bumps along the road. The pair wanted to call the site Vinomojo, but a few days before the launch received a legal letter claiming the name had already been taken, so they changed it

to Vinomofo “for the mother-f----rs who wouldn’t let us keep the name”. Then there were the larger retail players who threatened to end contracts with some wineries if they did business with Vinomofo. That’s partly why many of the deals are dubbed “secret” or “black market” purchases, to protect the identity of the winery and the price the wines are being sold for. The pair have been agile in responding to these potential crises but they also realise that success comes down to their innate compatibility: while Andre is the creative and energetic public speaker, Justin is the strategic big-picture thinker. “Through the journey we have come to appreciate how well the other person does things,” Justin says. ● editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

in a cooking pot. The generous pile of meaty goodness is served almost naked, with just that pool of meat juices and delicate shards of crackling. Lamaro’s pub, reborn as Lamaro’s Bodega, has achieved its goal of casual-but-upmarket Latin-influenced diner, despite first impressions of madly expensive marble and polished copper. With a softly lit display of charcuterie, lavish wine storage and bucolic paintings, the new owner Colonial Leisure Group (Lucky Coq, Bimbo Deluxe, Portsea Hotel etc) has taken 10 years off the elegant old building. By adding Spanish and South American accents, it’s done the same to the wine list and the menu. The closed-loop compost system is very 2015 and deserves praise, too. In the kitchen, and working with premium equipment – a $25,000-plus charcoal Josper oven and an open-flame asado grill – is Louis Naepels, ex Mr Big Stuff and Grossi Florentino. The owner also boasts a craft brewery and two local farms so he’s operating with top-notch local produce, too. It shines in that free-range Greenvale Farm pork, from the owner’s farm, and in a slow-roasted lamb shoulder from Flinders Island. Quail from Rannoch Farm in Tasmania is served piccata style (sliced in a butter and olive oil sauce). It’s tender and fabulous.

It’s not just the proteins that deserve comment, though. The succulent lamb is served with a bowl of smoky, sweet butter beans that almost outshine the meat. Asparagus comes from Koo Wee Rup and it’s rolled across a creamy almond sauce with rocket leaves. It’s charry and delicious. ● LEANNE TOLRA

ancy ham and pineapple with your beer? How about in it? Australia’s brewers have started brewing seasonal beers for summer. The Jamon y Pina (ham and pineapple) from Thornbury’s 3 Ravens is one of many hitting the shelves and local bars. Seasonal beers aren’t a new fad, rather they’re a brewing tradition based on necessity. Many of our craft breweries are putting an Aussie accent on tradition, while others are giving it a modern spin. Saison beers were traditionally brewed in the Belgian winter in the Wallonia region. Saison translates to season and the beers were made by farmers when the cold temperatures were ideal for brewing ale. It’s said the beers were made to give workers something to do while they weren’t out in the fields. Spice and citrus were often added to create a clean, fruity, refreshing style. Several new dark beers hit the shelves for winter; it seemed every brewer was making one. I thought by now they’d have finished but it seems they’re sticking around.

FINE FINE

FUN

There’s also the holiday beers that get a run each year. Christmas and Oktoberfest are the main ones that come to mind, but with their skill, passion and ability to push boundaries, Melbourne’s craft brewers will look for any occasion to create a new brew. Summer brews are appearing on the shelves at shops with comprehensive craft beer lists, while some of the smaller batches will go straight to kegs. ● BEN THOMAS bthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au

I’d spend a day in the fields to earn a few bottles of Boatrocker Brewing’s Saison du Bateau ($8) at the end of the shift. Smelling of citrus, spice and caramel, this is creamy smooth – it gets better as it warms up from the fridge. It has a subtle, fruity palate and loads of refreshment. CHOCOLATE CREPE & ICED LEMON TEA

Inspired by Mash Brewing brewers’ love of cola lollies as kids, their Cola Nick Berliner Weisse ($10) has the sour, low-alcohol Berliner Weisse style as its backbone. This wild-yeast beer has been tricked up with natural herbs and spices, plus the acid found in cola – E338 – to deliver a tart, refreshing and lengthy beer.

a UK number one. Much of the drama, Mike says, comes from the fact that The Seekers weren’t your typical pop stars. In Georgy Girl, singer Judith Durham’s story is fraught because she’s not sure she really wants to be a pop star. The Seekers’ songs are used throughout the musical to carry the story but there’s also painstaking recreation of concert scenes, which Mike hopes will win over a new generation of fans. He also thinks the audience will be surprised at how many songs they know. “Even as a cast member, you find yourself going, ‘Oh god yeah, this one and that one, too!’. Their catalogue is vast and deep.” ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au » Georgy Girl: The Seekers Musical opens December 19 at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Previews from December 15. hen thinking about legendary ’60s group The Seekers, one phrase comes to mind – “squeaky clean”. Forget all that sex, drugs and rock’n’roll – Australia’s first big pop export were as wholesome as they come. So it seems a strange decision to turn their story into a big new stage production. Georgy Girl: The Seekers Musical has its world premiere in December, but is there any drama to be found in the tale of four thoroughly lovely people? Absolutely, says St Kilda East actor Mike McLeish, who plays guitarist Bruce Woodley. “We were keen to dig beneath the surface and find out what went on behind the scenes,” he says. “With any sort of meteoric rise to fame, it’s never smooth sailing. There’s some romantic dalliances that cause a bit of drama, too.” Success was sudden for the Melbourne group. After taking work on a cruise liner, they wound up in the UK where a chance meeting with Dusty Springfield led to them recording their first international hit, I’ll Never Find Another You. They soon became the first Australian group to have

Kylie and Christmas seem such a natural pairing, I had to check this wasn’t a re-release. The album goes for a swinging jazz pastiche – as employed by Robbie Williams on his Swing When You’re Winning – and checks off the usual standards. It’s not an approach that best suits Kylie’s rather tinny pipes (pairing her with Frank Sinatra on Santa Claus Is Coming To Town is just asking for trouble) but it’s good, cheesy fun. ●

Forgoing the usual apocalypses for a suitably small story, Ant-Man is the most satisfying Marvel film since Iron Man 2. Crucial to this is Paul Rudd’s Scott – an ordinary bloke, down on his luck. When he breaks into the house of retired superhero Hank (Michael Douglas) he winds up entangled in a conspiracy stretching back decades. Naturally, he also walks away with a suit that shrinks him to insect size. Great fun. ● MB

omewhere along the line my email address got included in another family’s group chat. After the first few emails, I knew not to look. And then it stopped, but just this week a fresh series of missives is circulating among the group because they’re planning Christmas. It would appear theirs is a three-day affair with a detailed menu and a full program of activities. I know it’s not right to look so I’ve stopped, but I can’t help but feel sad that I won’t be there participating in the group games and the seafood platters, even though I am, technically, on the invitation list. And after all this time has passed, interrupting their conversation to say, “Ummmm, hello, I’m on this list but I shouldn’t be” feels like I’d be breaking and entering into their private space. And they seem like such a good and fun bunch of people. What to do? Modern dilemmas just keep coming at us, don’t they? Nothing like this would have ever presented itself in our parents’ day. Yet having said that, I actually have another confession to make. I am in the process of sorting through my mother’s things since she passed away a few months ago. We’ve distributed all the big furniture and dispersed the precious things among us, and now I’m trawling through the dusty old boxes from the hall cupboard that contained photos and school reports. Mum was a keeper of things. She held on to letters and cards, references from past employers (“we have never found a single reason to be critical of her”, one said) and, on days of historical significance, newspaper articles: the day man landed on the moon, the Kennedy assassination, that terrible time when Frank Sinatra left Melbourne in a huff.

Among all of this I came across two of her old diaries and, yes, I read them. Mostly they were just a textbook insight into the lives of young people in 1950s rural Australia, as well as an excellent filmography of the time. No one had televisions of course, so at night they went to the flicks, to dances, out for suppers and off to the baths to swim. She marked every payday, spent her money on records and fabric, and described most things as either “beaut” or “colossal”. Thankfully, there’s nothing here she would not have liked me to read, I say with guilty hindsight. To my pleasure, I found several entries where she referred to the man who ended up being my dad. Small, insignificant references at first – his name would pop up every now and then as someone who was “up the street” or “at the movies”. Once, she reported that they had three dances at the rowing club, prefaced with a “wow”. Then, in November 1960, he called in to ask her for dinner and after that entry his presence in her life was recorded daily. It was such a privilege for me to read of a time when life and sickness had not worn them down, when mum called dad a “catch”, and he said she had a gorgeous laugh. And they were both alive.

Anyway …

Mum’s daily inventory of events describes not only the innocence of the time, but the opening up of my own story. It’s not always right to look, but I’m glad I did. ● khall@theweeklyreview.com.au www.facebook.com/theweeklyreview @theweeklyreview

DIY WORKSHOP

(SUPPLIED)

The promise Bunnings Nunawading runs free DIY workshops over the weekend on everything from weatherproofing your home to painting, decking, gardening, maintaining your swimming pool, cleaning your barbecue and more. It’s the perfect opportunity to make the most of your outdoor space if you’re thinking of entertaining this silly season.

26 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ NOVEMBER 25, 2015

The reality The DIY presenter at Bunnings Nunawading is more than happy to tailor workshops to your needs and answer all your questions. On the Sunday I attend the How To Paint Colour workshop, we learn about contemporary colour schemes and how to use light around the home. Bunnings even has a digital Colour Planner where you can upload a photo of your room, experiment with colour schemes and choose your favourite combinations before making a decision. In the afternoon is a second workshop on how to build and maintain your deck. There is so much to consider even before starting, such as council regulations, knowing what is under the ground, floor levels and which orientation makes the most of the sunlight. For those

like me who don’t know what we’re doing, attending a workshop means there’s less of a chance we will make a mess of it. The pay-off The workshops will inspire you to get your hands dirty, and the best part is you’re already at the best place to find all the tools you need. The pain factor No pain as long as you take care holding the drill and hammer. Who should try it? Anyone who wants a cheaper way to complete a project around the house or in the garden. The bill? Free.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

The class was more than helpful and there are plenty of other workshops to choose from. ● Bunnings Nunawading, 250 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading. 9845 3900 www.bunnings.com.au/stores/vic/ nunawading

Award-winning artisan speciality bread and pastries

Who’s behind the counter? With 15 years’ experience as a baker for Bakers Delight and Browns Bakery, Christian Blackman decided to open his own store with the help of his parents. “You’re far more heavily invested in what you’re creating than when you’re working for someone else,” he says. Less than 10 months later, the self-proclaimed perfectionist won eight medals at the 2015 Royal Melbourne Show Fine Food Awards. What’s in store? Award-winning breads include the dark rye, fruit, spelt loaf (100 per cent spelt flour) and champion trophy winner, the Country Loaf. “Our main speciality is our sourdough bread. It’s basically long-fermented stone-ground flour,” Christian says. For those with a sweet tooth, the beesting is the signature cake but there are also tarts, croissants, Nutella doughnuts, danishes and scrolls. Who’s buying? Christian says the community’s response to the bakery has been fantastic. “We definitely have a solid, loyal local following. People are very appreciative of the quality that we’ve brought to the area.” The recent buzz from the awards has led to people visiting from all around Victoria. ● SIOBHAN CALAFIORE

Our pick The Country Loaf, which is 10 per cent wholemeal flour, has a crust that shatters in your mouth to reveal a fluffy and moist centre. “It’s a very traditional sourdough loaf of bread, using traditional methods,” Christian says. “It’s something you could have at a country house or farmhouse.” And of course it’s a favourite among the locals. Cost: $6.50. Rising star: Christian Blackman in the new store locals are talking about. (MICHAEL RAYNER)

30 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ NOVEMBER 25, 2015

(TIM TURNER)

OS Design has scooped the pool in this year’s Landscaping Victoria Industry Awards. A spectacular bayside project, with the outdoor living out front, won the Camberwell design firm the award for best landscape over 200 square metres. The resort-style, terraced front yard in Beaumaris has 21 bluestone steps to the front door, a stunning glass-walled pool and layered planting to soften the dominating bluestone infrastructure. COS Design also picked up the award for best landscape under 200 square metres for its work on an Alphington garden. The property’s owners, a family with three teenage children, wanted an inner-city cafe-style backyard with sharp clean edges and an industrial feel, as well as a soft and calm ambience. The challenging brief also specified building materials, such as bluestone, to reflect Melbourne’s heritage. A funky space with a killer pool, a pizza oven, barbecue and fire pit were also on the client’s wish list. The large claret ash in the yard had to be protected at all cost, Steve Taylor of COS Design says. “The palette was quite unique, so it was an exciting

BLUESTONE IN & AROUND THE POOL

“It’s a garden with soul & one we will always feel strongly connected to” – steve taylor Bluestone in and around the pool, recycled clinker bricks to reflect the Californian bungalow facade, polished concrete slabs for an industrial feel, and yellow stringybark timber stained with a charcoal tint became the building blocks of the project. Large basalt floaters that lay 300 millimetres below the surface made it impossible to dig, so the swimming pool was built above ground. Minimal fencing and a glass mosaic wet edge helped make the pool into a striking visual feature. Boundary hedges of slender weaver bamboo were used to soften the hard surfaces, while plantings of arthropodiums, creeping rosemary, espaliered lemons

and limes, black mondo grass, clivias, liriopes and Japanese plum yews give the garden a rich texture. Although it was a relatively small space, Steve says it was one of his favourite three jobs of all time. “It’s a garden with soul and one we will always feel strongly connected to,” he says. COS Design also won the Grant Saltmarsh Memorial Feature in the Landscape Award for the project’s swimming pool. ● ckennedy@theweeklyreview.com.au

SPECIAL PROMOTION

CONTEMPORARY LIVING

Four seasons Relaxed living with a sense of style

WEEK 3

T

he Seasons, a four-level group of four apartment buildings next to The Pines shopping centre at Doncaster East, offers relaxed living in a suburb known for its family values. The apartments, by JD Group, bring luxury and a high level of functionality to low-rise living with all its attendant advantages of greater privacy, a quieter environment, lower owners’ corporation fees and more owner-occupiers in the building. Apartment floors are real timber in an oak finish throughout the living areas with the option of carpet in the bedrooms. Ceilings are 2.7 metres, walls of glass open to balconies and draw in light and views. A fireplace set in a glamorous marble feature wall is an option in some of the larger apartments. Ducted heating and cooling is fitted throughout the four buildings. Kitchens and bathrooms are stylish and meticulously detailed with refinements based on feedback from residents in other JD Projects.

Kitchen cabinetry is 2pac and piano-finish veneer. Larger apartments have a waterfall island bench finished with 40-millimetre reconstituted stone. Some apartments have a double sink in the wall bench and a single sink in the island bench fitted with an optional Zip hydro tap to provide boiling and chilled water. All appliances are Miele. Storage includes a lot of drawers as well as cupboards and all are handle-free, push-to-open, making the kitchen a safer area for small children. Bathrooms are also well-equipped and stylish with grey and soft cream tiles, the same splashback and veneer as the kitchen and the luxury of abundant storage behind mirrors and beneath the vanity. Three and four-bedroom apartments have a freestanding bath and a bidet is an option. Some have two basins and all apartments have a power outlet next to the toilet, so that residents can install an electronic toilet cover if they wish.

DONCASTER EAST

Doncaster East is ideally located between the city and the country. It is 20 minutes from the CBD and a pleasant drive from the Yarra Valley with its wineries and restaurants, the picturesque small towns of the north-east, and the Dandenong Ranges. Across the road from The Seasons is The

Pines, a well-equipped shopping centre with amenities that include a library, community centre, medical centre, several banks, Target, Woolworths, Coles and Aldi, and more than 100 speciality stores. There is also a bus station at The Pines. Less than 15 minutes away is Westfield Doncaster. This is the main shopping centre for the eastern suburbs with more than 400 stores and services. Major retailers include Myer and David Jones, Target and Big W, along with leading supermarkets, designer fashion and speciality shops. There is a dining precinct on the rooftop and a Village cinema complex with nine theatres, including three gold-class cinemas and a 22-metre Vmax screen. A bus runs from The Pines to Westfield Doncaster. The area has a wealth of excellent state and independent schools. For outdoor recreation, the 68 hectares of Ruffey Lake Park is a favourite with Doncaster East families. It has adventure playgrounds, picnic areas, jogging tracks and dog off-lead areas. Sports facilities are found throughout the suburb, including indoor cricket, soccer, netball, beach volleyball and after-school programs at the Action Indoor Sports Stadium. ● BEVERLEY JOHANSON bjohanson@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.jdtheseasons.com.au

WE LOVE IT

C

hildren at a recent inspection loved this property. Besides admiring the pool and tennis court, one youngster described the garden as “great for games”. Adults are just as likely to fall for its easy charms as it has four large living areas and a luxurious main suite. Then there is the land. This is a classic acre property in the east but unlike some that are undulating, this one is flat and makes the most of its size and topography. This is the Templestowe side of Warrandyte. It is tranquil but also close to the Eastern Freeway for commuting to the city. Warrandyte High School is a short walk away and there’s abundant parkland in the neighbourhood – including extensive sweeps along the banks of the nearby Yarra River. A private road location offers seclusion and the semicircular driveway makes getting in and out of the property effortless. First impressions suggest the owners are gifted gardeners. Look no further than the topiary hedging, white roses and mop-top robinia. All are lush and green. The wide, variegated brick facade is punctuated by full-length windows and a two-storey archway crowns the entrance porch. Interiors mix classic elements, such as multipaned internal doors, plush carpets and plantation shutters, with family-friendly practical details and an earthy colour palette. Subtle details include textured carpet in the formal areas echoing the pattern of the wrought-iron balustrade on the front doors and staircase. Terracotta floor tiles in casual spaces indoors and out show an eye for durability. The entrance hall opens to the formal lounge via a columned cutaway. The office and dining room are also open to the hall. The large open-plan kitchen, meals and family area has a horseshoe-shaped, granite-topped bench and quality appliances. In the family area, custom-made units provide plentiful storage and a gas log fireplace ignites at the push of a button. Folding doors reveal a massive rumpus room with a wet bar and glass doors to a covered porch. The rear terrace has a louvred canopy making it suitable for entertaining in all weather. Terracotta tiling extends to meet the glass-fenced pool, creating heaps of space and a hardy surface for ball play and bike riding. The north-south mod grass tennis court is yet another sporting amenity. This property has some very tall trees so children’s games will probably involve tree climbing. Pop in a treehouse if you want – you’ll be spoilt for choice as to a suitable location. Back inside, the easy climb up the staircase leads to a retreat that is the size of the lounge and entrance hall combined. Five bedrooms, a bathroom and a storage room are off this area. In the hotel-sized main suite, the walk-in wardrobe has a skylight. The en suite features a separate toilet, twin basins, a glass shower and a spa for two. Other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and there’s a separate toilet next to the main bathroom. ● KAY KEIGHERY property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Built in 1981, this two-storey house was transformed in 2012 into a glamorous abode resembling a French manor. Elegant formal, casual and outdoor living areas are graced by views of the landscaped garden. Tucked into its rear is the pool with a waterfall and travertine terrace. The frontage is imposing, with lawn rising to a verandah with a wrought-iron balcony above. Grandeur aside, it’s a practical house with lots of room for a large family. The living room has cream carpet and brocade curtains, and a gas log fireplace. Sliding doors link it with the parquet dining room; this and the meals area have french doors to the north-facing pergola overlooking the pool. The granite kitchen has Miele and Siemens appliances. Upstairs, the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and white stone en suite with glass shower. Three more double bedrooms have wardrobes, and one opens to the balcony with its southerly panorama. The property is in the East Doncaster Secondary zone. ● ALISON BARCLAY

Native landscaping surrounds this house, and a tall gum tree lends partial shade over the backyard pool. There’s a satisfying flow to the two-storey floor plan, while extensive decking – both covered and open to the sky – encourages airy entertaining. You’ll find one bedroom on ground level and four more, including the main suite, off a central retreat on the first floor. With a big walk-in wardrobe, a spa in the en suite, and a balcony, the main suite is luxurious. Back down on ground floor a study precedes open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas and a separate family room. Pale stone and glass surfaces set a light tone in the kitchen. Glass sliding doors in the living area and family room lead to the covered outdoor dining area, which links seamlessly with wraparound decking. The pool is solar-heated, and the backyard greenery won’t require much maintenance. In the zone for Box Hill High School, and moments from Blacks Walk Reserve and Laburnum station, the location is convivial and convenient. ● KAY KEIGHERY

The lure of the East Doncaster college zone has brought many well-built 1970s houses back into fashion. This ranch-style house commands a classic quarter-acre in the bowl of a court near Doncaster Gardens Primary, and has a heated pool, landscaped garden and beautiful view north from big, mullioned windows. The porcelain bathrooms are new, and three double bedrooms offer zoned privacy. There are two open-plan communal areas, both with that captivating outlook. The formal living and dining rooms have polished floorboards and crystal chandeliers, and open at the south end to a covered patio and rear yard. A highlight is the spectacular beaten-copper fireplace. The cork-tiled family and meals area flows into the kitchen, which is striking in lilac laminate with a Westinghouse oven, Chef cooktop and masses of cabinets and bench space; too many cooks can’t go wrong here. Children will adore the garden. The garage can open to the pergola area, allowing a second car space. ● ALISON BARCLAY

Buyers seeking a home of classic character, updated in keeping with modern expectations, will find the combination ready and waiting here. A golden elm tree affords shade over the front garden and the house exudes solid appeal in clinker brick. Inside, five bedrooms and a choice of social spaces should see a large family easily accommodated. The formal lounge and dining room has Victorian ash floorboards, mint-coloured walls and an open fireplace. The open-plan hub, full of light thanks to a glass wall to the terrace and green backyard, presents ideal ingredients for contemporary living, with Bosch appliances and an oversized island bench topped in speckled granite. Glass-topped timber vanities and mosaic tiling add class to the powder room, en suite and bathrooms. Upstairs, a retreat under a peaked ceiling leads to two bedrooms with innovative storage and individual colour schemes. Heating, cooling, Velux skylights and a water tank are included. The double carport leads to a two-car garage. ● KAY KEIGHERY

WARRANDYTE NORTH \ 37 WEERONA WAY This house is a bit of a bushland paradise, enjoying a leafy 4815-square-metre block. Tall trees dot its surrounds, with a rustic see-saw, swings and cubby tucked into carefully chosen spots. A sealed driveway wends its way up to the brick-veneer house, which is built close to the block’s western edge. At the front of the house are a double carport and garage. There’s a workshop in the garage and a home office (set up as a storeroom). The heated and fenced swimming pool is also at the front of the house. A path winds around to the back, where there are two raised vegetable patches. Inside, the floors are a mix of tiles and carpet. Living spaces flow into each other, with more personal spaces – bedrooms and bathrooms – zoned for privacy and quiet. The main bedroom is off the lounge, and there’s a second bedroom off the formal dining space. Double doors from the dining area lead to the kitchen and the family meals zone. In turn, this area leads through to a living room, which has an enormous bay window framing a view of the surrounding bush. There are two more bedrooms in this part of the house, as well as the family bathroom and a spacious laundry. Off the family and meals area is a covered deck that overlooks the pool. There are schools and shops within three kilometres. ● SIEW-CHING GOH

THE PROPERTY MANAGEMENT REPORT WITH RICHARD LINTON Department Head | 0419 991 078 hockingstuart Doncaster

TEN PERCENT AT DAY TEN RULE Many novice investors think that they would like to hold out for the highest rent possible before letting the property- even if it means losing several weeks rent. Is this the best way to maximise return? Experienced property investors report that vacancy is likely to cost more than lowering the rent to meet the market. When they actually do the sums, the best return comes from minimising vacancy. Holding out for a high rent- say $600 is illogical if the property is only worth $550 and will never attract good tenant at that price. Two weeks vacancy at $550 is $1100, and spread over 52 weeks is twice the value of the higher rent- if it did in fact eventuate!

But it is not always easy to decide to lower the rent. Most investors need a strategy to help them avoid the temptation to hold out for the higher rent for ‘just another week’ with the common result that- before they know it - another and another goes by. Experienced property investors work by the rule that (provided the property is clean and presents well and is well-maintained) if a tenant is not secured by day ten of the leasing campaign, the asking rent should be reduced by ten percent. This takes the agony out of the decision, enabling the property owner to distance themselves from the process by working to a tired and tested system.

Furthermore, unrealistic rents are more likely to be paid by more desperate tenants- those who are poorly referenced and have been unsuccessful in previous tenancy applications.

Knock down - Rebuild From $179,630

Selling Off-Market – Advisable or Not? with Paul Kounnas, Director of Hudson Bond Real Estate Many real estate sales occur off-market. An off-market sale is one which is not publicly advertised to the open market. It is a marketing approach that targets one or just a few well qualified and cashed up buyers who know exactly what they want and are ready to buy the right property immediately once it’s available. The advantage of an off-market sale is that it can save the seller both time and stress, as well as the cost of a full marketing campaign. The major question facing vendors, who consider selling off-market, is whether they could achieve a better result by listing on the open market. The answer is, “it depends”.

On Display at The Avenue

There are three scenarios where selling offmarket works best: 1. The first being the property has previously undergone a marketing/auction campaign that has failed to produce the desired result.

The Cottesloe MK11 28.2sq Think of your property as a blank canvas... Now imagine rebuilding the stunning cottlesloe amongst the existing landscape of your street. The Cottesloe MK11 is a beautiful classic and timeless design that captures the essence of American style perfectly. The luxurious Hamptons style home is impressive from the street and invites you to come in and discover all the space and options you need to relax and feel free inside your new home. This 3 bedroom plus study /parents retreat home comes with the option of adding a fourth bedroom. The open plan kitchen, dining and family room is the perfect place to entertain your family and friends. There is also a separate theatre room or games room conveniently located away from the main family area.

2. When the agent has a buyer who really needs to buy but has not been able to find anything suitable. They may have sold their property and have to move or they may have some unique criteria of what they want in a property. To finalise their property search the buyer will quite often pay a premium market price. 3. Sellers of prestige or unique properties can

9840 7700

hudsonbond.com.au

be well advised to sell off-market. Unique is a greatly misunderstood word in real estate. It is neither positive nor negative, it simply means it is a rare kind. Unique homes often require unique purchasers and they can be in short supply in any market. It is relatively easy for good agents to search through their digital database of buyers and match them to a new listing. Prestige homes in Sydney and Melbourne often sell off-market because even in strong markets, the auction clearance rate of prestige homes generally underperforms the broader auction clearance rate. This makes selling offmarket a sensible option for iconic and unique homes, in all market conditions. Besides, how can you have a successful auction if there is only one buyer bidding for your home? If you are going to sell off-market in a boom, you want the right buyer negotiating with the right agent on your behalf. In a falling market, a good off-market offer may well be the best offer you could see for some time. This is an edited version of an article by Peter O’Malley
