EDITOR’S DESK It’s one of the great ironies of the modern human condition – the more we embrace technology that connects us with the world 24/7, the more we want to retreat into the private santuary of our own homes. A man’s home might once have been his castle, but these days it’s more a cocoon to nurture and protect from the onslaught of 21st-century life. So we have become a nation of nesters, obssessed with renovations and throw rugs and the latest chic black tapware for the bathroom. If any proof were needed of our interiors infatuation, you need only look at the growing list of celebrities hitching their names to homewares. In our special Home edition this week, we catch up with some of the famous faces designing everything from rugs and sofas to tea sets. We also get the lowdown on the latest looks for inside and out, and how to get them. Enjoy! ●

ow green is your alley? If you’re thinking of bringing the outdoors in, you couldn’t ask for a better time. Ever since Pantone announced Greenery as its colour of the year for 2017, the plethora of options for greening the home has been endless, varied, and – for a colour once considered challenging – utterly stylish. Pantone’s annointed zesty yellow-green shade evokes early spring and reconnection with nature. “Bringing forth a refreshing take, Greenery is a tangy yellow-green that speaks to our need to explore, experiment and reinvent,” said Pantone announcing its selected colour of the year. “Illustrative of flourishing foliage, the fertile attributes of Greenery signals one to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.” Pantone’s Greenery “is a bright and uplifting colour, which would suit kitchen and dining areas, sunrooms and outdoor areas”, says Bristol Paint interior designer Danielle Black. “Green tones can work well in the bedroom and study areas, but make sure they are softer hues as they are more relaxing and calming.” World of Style by Porter Davis uses green in a wide range of tones in different decorating styles. “Various emotions can be created by simply changing the tone of green you select and the accent colour it is paired with,” says interior designer Koraly Symeou. “From a classic Hamptons or a Tuscany-inspired home, through to a contemporary Scandinavian or Whitsundays resort, green is a very versatile range – a simple shift in undertone and depth or what it is paired with, and you can change the entire look.” According to Australian Trend Forecast’s Kim Chadwick, there is less emphasis on painted surfaces in the home this year. “Paint and surface coatings are less important in coming trends, with an overwhelming desire to return to natural materials, such as timber, clay bricks and rusted metal.” As such, she says green is best as a feature colour, for example, on a staircase, rather than a standard feature wall. But mainly, she says, it will appear in plants, as botanical prints or as accents in tints, tones and shades. Bristol Paint’s Danielle Black suggests using green in feature walls, furniture, timber trims, cupboards or wallpaper. “For wallpapers, the daring might like Miami, with its exciting M.C. Escher-style drawings, while the more cautious might prefer a more subtle pattern like the Chiavi Segrete, with its beautiful leaves and delicate

golden key details. Both papers are by Cole & Son.” In furnishing, Danielle says upcycling is becoming increasingly popular. Bristol Paint offers classes throughout the year at its Essendon shop to help teach customers how to paint their own pieces. Annie Sloan chalk paints are also designed for upcycling. The British paint guru is a lifelong fan of green, such as the strong, deep Amsterdam Green, or Antibes Green. “I’ve been loving my Antibes Green, a brilliant bright green, for ages and ages,” Annie says. “It’s probably my favourite colour, so much so that I’ve painted my entrance hall and some of my kitchen in this colour.” Greenery is also being introduced into fixtures and fittings. Lighting designer Volker Haug has integrated bold and fresh green tones to create playful yet elegant designs, in the Cable Jewellery and WOW designs. ● mtay@theweeklyreview.com.au Annie Sloan \ anniesloan.com Australian Trend Forecast \ australiantrendforecast.com.au Bristol Paints \ bristol.com.au Volker Haug \ volkerhaug.com World of Style \ worldofstyle.com
M I X & M AT C H Green’s complementary colour is red, but a split complementary scheme would pair terracotta with a range of greens, Kim Chadwick says. Also use it with warm timbers. Green can match well with brighter colours such as yellow and orange to stimulate or invigorate a space, Volker Haug says. On the other hand, combining colours such as blues or darker tones of green can achieve more subdued or calming moods. When pairing greens with reds, select muted tones or deeper shades with brown and purple hues, such as maroon and burgundy, to avoid suggesting Christmas festivities. Sage green works wonderfully with soft, dusty, minty blues, ink or petrols, says Koraly Symeou. Emerald green pairs with tan leather, mustards and inks. Green can also be just as effective on its own, Koraly says. Whether paired with a fresh white interior or a soft, warm grey base palette, simply adjusting the hue, tone and depth of colour can create a feature in itself. ● MARCH 22, 2017 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 7

MEGAN HESS

Megan Hess spends her days in her all-white Melbourne studio using her trusty Montblanc pen, Monty, to create illustrations for leading brands. In 2008, she was asked by author Candace Bushnell to illustrate the re-issue of her bestseller, Sex and the City City. Soon after, major brands began calling. In between commissions for some of the world’s leading fashion houses, Megan has turned her attention to a homewares range that includes cushions, vases, plates and napkins, which sell globally via her website. “I’ve always been passionate about interiors,” Megan says. “No matter where I’ve lived, or my financial circumstances, I’ve made the most of the spaces I’ve lived or worked in. I used to work off my dining room table in a tiny apartment, and I made that space as lovely as I could.” Megan’s homewares have been inspired by her travels, and she always carries a sketchbook. “When you are somewhere you’ve not been before, you see different people and hear different sounds and it switches on a different trail of thought that leads to a new idea,” she says.
(MARTINA GRANOLIC)
egan Hess’s fashion illustrations have a global audience thanks to a client list that includes Montblanc, Fendi, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Cartier, and Valentino. Now she is using her talents to create stylish pieces for homes.
“I design everything myself, sample fillings for cushions and choose the colours and fabrics. I’ll sample 10 different colourways to find the right shade of pink for a cushion. I am a perfectionist.” Recently, Megan was invited to work on a teaware collection for Wedgwood, which has been making fine china and porcelain for more than 200 years. “They wanted to incorporate illustrations of modern tea parties on teaware,” she says. “Working with such history was a joy.”

elbourne’s own queen of ultrafeminine personalised stationery was born in Rome and attended art school in Italy at the age of 13. Cristina Re later studied design at Swinburne University, and began her working life as a photographer before launching her eponymous stationery line.
8 THE WEEKLY REVIEW W \ MARCH 22, 2017
When Cristina decided to open a concept store in Collingwood, selling her personalised stationery, she wanted to create a little piece of Paris. So she opened a cafe in the shop and designed a range of vintage style teaware reminiscent of the most luxurious Parisian salons. “I travelled to France a lot and loved the beautiful patisseries and I created a mini high tea
salon with very French decor,” she says. “Then I designed my own teaware because I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted in Melbourne.” Customers fell in love with the tea cups and saucers in rose pink and gold, so Cristina began producing the range commercially, adding teapots, plates, old-style cake stands and sugar bowls to the range. They are now sold in gift stores around Australia and worldwide. She updates her collections every few months. The latest, Paradise Palms, has a tropical influence, while Cristina’s personal favourite, Crystalline, is inspired by rose quartz. “I follow fashion and look at what is happening in couture and interior design to stay contemporary. It’s all about luxury, high quality and design that will last.” ● » cristinare.com

he’s the girl next door whose stint presenting The Block has only furthered her passion for interior design. But, as a busy mum to two young daughters, Shelley Craft believes homewares should be all about durability and practicality.
S
haynna Blaze is one busy woman. When she’s not fronting Selling Houses Australia or The Block, she runs a successful interior design Block business, blankcanvas INTERIORS. She also recently launched an online shop, stocking her line of rugs, artworks, furniture and lighting.

Shelley Craft’s interest in home style was sparked early. “Mum was very particular and wouldn’t let us leave home for school if our rooms weren’t tidy and our beds weren’t made. So there was always a real pride of house when I was growing up,” Shelley says. “Mum and dad built two of our family homes in the 1980s, so I was exposed to designing through that.” As a young adult, living in share households, Shelley didn’t pay much attention to interior design. Her interest was rekindled while travelling as a presenter with The Great Outdoors. “We stayed in so many different places [and] I always took great interest in the interiors. I’d love to do an interior design course if I had a moment to study but with two kids and a job that won’t be any time soon.” Still Shelley has found an outlet for her passion, working as an ambassador with Pillow Talk. “I’d love to do a range of cushions and throws with them because they’re an easy way to update your home every season,” she says. Shelley has also worked on a flooring collection for Carpet Court called the Real Living collection. “I like to do things as easily and quickly as possible and within a budget,” she says. “The floor coverings are low-maintenance, eco-friendly and easy to lay. I like the timber look and, living in Byron Bay, I like pale and whiteish laminates. Vinyl is great here because there is so much sand. Shelley describes her own home style as “easy luxury with a coastal tribal feel”. There are items she’s collected on her travels dotted around her house. “It’s not a show home but there is history here,” she says. ●
Before she became one of Australia’s most famous interior designers, Shaynna Blaze had her sights set on a career as an artist. “My aunty was an artist and I wanted to study fine arts before I got into interior design,” she says. “I did a lot of commission pieces for clients initially, but gradually I was taken away from my art because I was so busy with interior design and then TV.” A collaboration with online gallery and homewares store Urban Road rekindled her passion, and she has designed a series of works inspired by nature – from stormy skies to the intricacies of a butterfly’s wing. The artworks are just one aspect of Shaynna’s burgeoning homewares portfolio that includes a lighting range for OneWorld, inspired by a trip to Milan and New York; a beach-inspired range for The Rug Collection; and a furniture collection, made by local company Molmic, which she describes as “classic and timeless”. “Timeless, for me, is a well-worn structured dinner suit or a black-and-white movie. It’s about a chair that you sit in and don’t want to get out of, with strong, simple lines, fine tapered legs and detail in the back,” she says. “Many people have open-plan living and are too scared to put a chair or couch in the centre of a room, so I’ve created chairs and sofas where the details are in the back as much as in the front.” As for her own home style, she says it’s a mix of “formal structure with chaos in between”. “I have a base and I can add a lamp, use a throw and cushion, move a few pieces and change the look of a room within 20 minutes.” A favourite item in her own home is the Cary chair – a 1.5-seat leather chair with an embellished back. “My husband and son rave about it. You can sit in it as a couple, curl up in it alone, or sit with a child and read them a story." ●
Beci Orpin describes herself as a “nester” – an ideal Saturday morning is spent rearranging the furniture in her West Brunswick house. “As a teenager living in a 1940s-style bungalow in Kew East, I was desperate for a warehouse-style bedroom,” she says. “I ripped up my carpets but my parents wouldn’t let me polish the floorboards so I had bare boards and a double bed on a simple base and a clothing rack. And I had lots of collections of things on the wall – I remember lots of Coca-Cola memorabilia.” Beci now lives in a double-storey Victorian terrace. “Inside it’s quite eclectic and I’m certainly not a minimalist. When I see something I like, I buy it,” she says. One of her most recent acquisitions was a green and pink vintage Argentinian rug bought on her travels. After working as creative director with the ARRO Home online store for three years, designing linens, quilt covers, rugs, kitchenware and tableware in bold colours and patterns, Beci’s focus is now on home projects anyone can try. Sunshine Spaces shows readers how to make natural dyes, press flowers, make a macrame chair and whip up some outdoor cushions, among other home-grown crafts. “I recently tried natural dyeing using acorns and that was a lot of fun because I had no idea how it would work out,” Beci says. ●

atching TV shows about sustainable homes, you could be forgiven for thinking that living in a hand-built mud-brick dwelling powered by wind turbines was the best way to lessen your impact on the planet. But going green doesn’t require going to extremes. Whether you’re in a one-bedroom city apartment, a rental property or an established family home, there are many ways to make your home more energy-efficient and eco-friendly – within any budget. We asked some local sustainable housing experts how. ●
ABOUT THE HOUSE
Director, Melbourne Design Studios
Architect Marc Bernstein-Hussman says more people are becoming interested in sustainable building for its benefits to the environment – and their hip pockets. Marc is a devotee of the German Passivhaus energy efficiency standard which aims to minimise energy used for heating and cooling through clever design. Its solutions include creating an airtight envelope around a house for insulation – rather than air-conditioning. Marc is currently working with his team on a house in Northcote, which has solar panels incorporated into the roof, as well as in-slab hydronic heating and cooling. Marc says that while investing $10,000 in solar panels might seem like a lot, they pay for themselves in savings on energy bills. “You could even start making money

and it adds resale value to the property too,” he says. But Marc is quick to point out that sustainability is more about good design than technology. “For example, we’re building townhouses with courtyards to bring in light and breeze, and if you’re building an extension, you can orient it to make the most of the sun. If we build durable and flexible houses using quality materials and techniques, people won’t need to rebuild or renovate.” ● » melbournedesignstudios.com.au

“This ‘ecofication’ of a Northcote home includes a renovation and north-facing extension with eaves, overhangs and cross-flow ventilation optimised,” Marc says. “The extension faces a northern courtyard. Operable windows face north, with small openings opposite to create good cross-flow ventilation. “Sustainable materials, such as sugar gum cladding from a local co-operative, have been used wherever possible. “The studio at the back of the house can be closed off – thermally and from a functional point of view – from the remainder of the house, to create utmost flexibility.” ●

SHELLEY ROBERTS

For Shelley Roberts, sustainability is about quality and scaling down. Known for her work refashioning apartments, the architect has her own residence in the heart of the CBD – minutes from the office she shares with business partner Paul Gleeson – that showcases her eco-aware approach. In her one-bedroom apartment, she moved the bathroom, laundry and kitchen to form a central hub. “If you understand plumbing and locate things correctly, you’ll use fewer resources,” she says. Shelley also uses the apartment’s high ceilings to store things vertically. “I have an attractive folding stepladder that doubles as art,” she says, indicating suitcases that are stored above a wardrobe. “Apartments are different from houses because space is finite, so spatial awareness becomes particularly important. Relocating a door can make a big difference as it changes where you can position furniture, for example. Storage-wise, you need to look at using space inside wall cavities and false ceilings. “Sustainability isn’t about bells and whistles, it’s about quality. If you design something well, it will last.” ●

KIM KNEIPP
Kim Kneipp approaches sustainability in the home in the same way as sustainability in the wardrobe – hardly surprising, given that her training is in fashion. The self-taught interior designer worked for years in the fashion industry before extending her portfolio to include wellness clinics, eco retreats and private clients who want to sustainably restyle their homes. Rather than spending lots of money, resources and effort on extending or renovating, Kim advises clients to think of their house as they might a wardrobe. “Rearrange the furniture before you do anything else, to break the established pattern,” she says. “For example, I converted a study into an en suite for one of my clients; your dining room might work better as the lounge.” In addition to decluttering, she says eco-friendly paint offers a quick, cheap and easy style fix. “Changing the colour of a room is the most effective way to alter its appearance – you can’t go that wrong, so it’s a good way to explore.” Plants make a big difference, too. “The more you have, the better. They purify the air and create their own little eco system.” Having recently renovated her own Edwardian house in Brunswick East, Kim knows from experience that sustainable materials can be expensive. “I found some timber doors for $20 but spent a lot preparing them. They needed to be stripped of lead-based paint, sanded, re-oiled, planed and so on before being fitted into the house.” Still, the investment is worth it. “It might cost a bit more and take more effort, but long term, living in a living, breathing space is an unparalleled experience.” ● » thesustainablestylist.com

T: “One of my signature dishes is Singaporean chilli crab with rice and mantou.” G: “Mine is a traditional Indonesian fried chicken dish called ayam goreng. It reminds me of visiting my grandmother in Indonesia.” What can’t you live without? T: “I love my KitchenAid mixer. It’s deep purple like a boysenberry, so I called it Berry. I need a lot of dough when I make bao, so I use it to speed up the process.”
G: “I can’t live without my hand mixer. It’s like a mini food processor, but it’s much handier. I use it for spice bases and sauces.” What do you always have in your fridge or pantry? T: “Rice is one of our staples, so when it’s running low, mum or one of us always tops it up. And there’s always a stock of chilli.” G: “We make sure we always have eggs. It means I can whip up a nice Thai omelette whenever I want.” Anything you’d change about your kitchen? T: “I love the kitchen in the film It’s Complicated. It’s rustic and open with marble benches and a lot of white. ” G: “Everyone always talks about wardrobes for clothes and shoes, but I want a walk-in pantry instead.” Tasia and Gracia will host a cooking demonstration at Box Hill Central Fresh Food Market on April 8, as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. melbournefoodandwine.com.au tasiaandgracia.com @tasia.seger \ @gracia.seger

KAREN & ROS
The season five MasterChef winner is busy shooting the second series of her Network 10 cooking show My Market Kitchen with friend and fellow MasterChef alumnus, Lynton Tapp. In her spare time, Emma holds cooking demonstrations focusing on sustainability for municipal councils across Melbourne. She’s also an ambassador for Queen Victoria Market.
Melbourne midwives and best friends Karen Gawne and Ros Waters are battling it out on the current season of My Kitchen Rules. They’re also raising awareness about the importance of healthy eating during pregnancy.
Favourite kitchen feature? “I have beautiful glossy cabinetry from Scavolini in Richmond, made in Italy from recycled materials. I also love my Smeg stand mixer, which is great for making pavlova and bread. It takes out all of the grunt work.” Favourite dish to cook at home? “My default for parties is pavlova. They were just so out of fashion in the ’90s, so I used to make them ironically. But now they’ve really made a comeback and everyone loves them. I put rosewater into the base, make a pistachio mascarpone cream and smash pomegranate all over it.”
(MICHAEL RAYNER)
EMMA DEAN
Favourite kitchen feature? K: “My Technika freestanding stainless-steel gas oven, which has six hotplates on top. When we renovated about 12 years ago, we built the kitchen around it.” Favourite dish to cook at home? K: “I like to experiment with different versions of tiramisu. My favourite is the lamington one, in which I use a chocolate instead of coffee, with a raspberry coulis and mascarpone filling.” R: “I love cooking our beef cheek ragout. Karen has a pressure cooker, which makes it easier. We also like to experiment with ice-cream, made with real juice and a lot of eggs.”
EMMA DEAN
Can’t live without? K: “My Wusthof and Mundial knives. When you’re finely slicing and dicing food, sharp knives make it much easier. I use them a lot for baking and stir fries.” R: “My Kenwood stick blender, it’s great for chopping fiddly things like garlic, chilli and shallots.”
What do you always have in your fridge or pantry? “I’ve been loving kimchi from The Fermentary in the Macedon Ranges. I always have a jar of it in my fridge. I also can’t live without eggs from my mum and dad’s farm. Luckily mum always brings me some when she visits. Eggs are a great snack and fantastic to cook with.” Season two of My Market Kitchen is coming to Network 10. mymarketkitchen.com.au emmadean.com.au \ @emmadeancooks

UNEXPECTED COLOUR COMBOS
Evolution \ “In Europe the kitchens are smaller and treated more like freestanding furniture items and can take a more playful palette,” says Kestie. In Australia, “you’ll see it feeding through in hospitality to residential”. How to pull the style together \ Always work with a neutral base for larger joinery items and play with colour in the details or styling elements. One of our kitchens was inspired by the colour palette of the Beverly Hills Hotel. Essential elements \ + Pastel palettes mixed with traditional hues. + Be bold, be brave with colour; try using in smaller details for a pop of colour. + Treat joinery elements as furniture. » kestielanestudio.com
(COURTESY OF PUUSTELLI MIINUS KITCHENS)
Injecting unusual colours to highlight particular areas is particularly on trend in Europe, and will have a significant influence in home interiors here. “It is the mix of an unexpected colour palette,” says designer Kestie Lane, whose award-winning interior designs include surprising mash-ups such as blues and dusty pinks. In kitchens, she says, the effect might be tempered with playful colour in joinery pulls, or shadowline and internal detailing. “You open up a cupboard and you get a surprise colour.” ●
Best tip \ For those shy about making such bold statements, use colour as an accent or in styling accessories and artwork.

Essential elements \ + Enough floor space (at least a metre) to allow an adequate walkway. + Wall length to house cooktop and sink. + Flexibility to accommodate service pathways against the perimeter wall. There is a resurgence of everything natural in kitchens, says Sarah Dowling, practice director of MIM Design, who has won gongs for her interior environment design in everything from residential projects to retail to hospitality. She says stone, in particular, with its intrinsic beauty, different hues and grains, is playing a starring role. But interestingly, she says “man-made reconstituted stone with little pattern or texture” is on the way out. Instead, bold figured stones create a dynamic and monolithic statement. ● How to pull the style together \ Detailing and a textural mix of materials
can create a distinctive look to reflect the character of the house. Essential elements \ + Mix of palettes and materials, for example, timber with a touch of metal. + Signature detailing. + Lighting: pay particular attention to direct and indirect. MADI ROBINSON
W
hen it comes to getting her game on, Australian Diamonds netball star and Collingwood Magpies team captain Madi Robinson has one key ingredient – the kitchen of the Ascot Vale apartment she shares with her husband Todd. Why is the kitchen so important to you? When I first started to establish myself as an elite player, the kitchen is where I educated myself the most. I found myself on the bench and I wasn’t sure why, and the coach said I needed to get fitter and start thinking about my nutrition. That was when I found that what I put in my body made an enormous difference to my performance, and I haven’t really looked back since.
(MICHAEL RAYNER)
What’s your go-to appliance? My blender and food processor tend to get a workout. When I come home from training, I want things that are quick, healthy and fuelling for the body. What’s at the top of your menu? I have a really big sweet tooth, but I have to watch what I eat, so one thing I like to experiment with is raw sweets. I might whip up a few bliss balls and take them to the girls at training. I also love to make Ani Phyo’s raspberry ganache fudge cake, which contains nothing more than dates, walnuts, cacao, agave syrup, avocado and a pinch of salt. ● SARAH HARRIS » Collingwood Magpies play Melbourne Vixens at Hisense Arena, Apri1 2 at 3pm. TIMBER
As busy lifestyles and technology consume more of our time, we’re placing increasing importance on wellness and the sanctuary our homes provide. “For me, the bathroom has always been a place of refuge, relaxation and solitude,” says Michael Drescher, associate director of DKO Architecture. “It’s a space where you feel protected and comfortable.” “In designing residential bathrooms, we look to restaurants and hotels for inspiration, as they create theatre and evoke emotion. So be brave in your material choices.” ●
Natural materials survive all seasonal trends, according to bathroom and kitchen specialists E&S – and the leading material is timber. “Timber gives warmth and character to any room. Timber cabinets in the bathroom or kitchen are timeless and can be perfectly paired with metallic-coloured tapware. The earthy tones of the timber and the warmth of the metallic finishes create a richness.” ●
Essential elements \ + Mix organic natural stones with the strong linear characteristics of tiles and simplify the tonal palette in order to create striking areas of interest; + Achieve the mood you’re after with tapware and accessories – be it industrial and moody aged iron or luxurious and elegant organic copper; + Savvy lighting choices allow you to create a luxe, invigorative daytime space, which transforms into a calming sanctuary at night.
BATHROOM BY E&S
How to pull the style together \ Adding decorative pieces, such as hand-woven plant pots or handmade bowls, will play on the room’s natural textures. To complement the timber in a distinctive manner, try adding fabrics that reference different cultures and world travels. Essential elements \ + Strong grain timber such as blackbutt; + Crisp white ceramic basin and bath; + Contrasting tiles such as light walls with a dark timber floor.

POP ART This fun trend adds a sense of whimsy and wonder to any living space. Homewares store Fenton & Fenton mixes colour and pattern to create a vibrant effect that really pops. Owner Lucy Fenton says a rug is a good place to start when deciding on your colour palette. When styling this room (left), Lucy started with the statement Mr Fenton Turkish Pepa dhurrie. “Its bold print and happy hues not only define the space, but also introduce a palette to mix and match to,” Lucy says. Next, add fun elements such as lamps, accessories and wall art, taking care to balance the shape and size of your pieces. “The statement artwork by Carly Williams is complemented and balanced by the smaller textural piece by Jai Vasicek, and the sculptural vases and lighting help compose the room,” Lucy says. ● How to pull the style together \ Take colours from a signature piece such as an art or rug and reference them in other accessories. Keeping the sofa and coffee table neutral will allow you to be more experimental with colour and pattern elsewhere. Essential elements \ + A bright statement rug or artwork; + Accessories in varying shapes and sizes; + A sense of fun. Velvet is making a comeback in homewares as well as fashion. Stores such as Adairs, Freedom and West Elm are all offering velvet cushions and throws, while the velvet lounge is back in jewel tones like sapphire and emerald. Temple & Webster’s head stylist Jessica Bellef says adding the right accessories will complete this lush look. “Statement pieces like bar carts and lighting featuring deco-inspired shapes, like geometric or fan patterns, are great options we’re seeing lots of,” Jessica says. “Design that pays attention to detail also fits with a deco scheme, such as pieces with contrasting edging, a beautiful embossed pattern or metallic touch.” ● How to pull the style together \ Jessica says start with a piece you love, such as a deep-hued sofa or Gatsby-esque mirror, and then add accessories like vases, metal items and contrasting throws and cushions. “For added detail, introduce a sofa or

RETRO JUNGLE As soon as Pantone announced Greenery as its 2017 colour of the year, social media feeds filled with photos of lush, leafy tones. Rae Maxwell founder of luxe interiors store Barnaby Lane says their most recent campaign (above) embraced the year’s “it” colour by including plenty of indoor plants. “We had a really big focus on greenery.” Anything resembling a banana leaf is particularly popular this year, hence a return to the jungle-inspired decor popular in the ’70s. SAMMY J
EÂ
ven before the federal police arrived to search the attic of the Northcote home award-winning comic Sammy J shares with his wife Hannah and their two young daughters, he knew it was a special space. Why is the attic your favourite place? I am not a hoarder, but I am a chronicler. I wrote diaries from age 10 to 20 and they are all up there in boxes, along with other stuff like my old school work and my Phantom comics, because we don’t have a lot of storage space. Every time I go up there to get the portacot or a costume or something, I get distracted and start reading, and half an hour will go by.
(MICHAEL RAYNER)
Any future plans for the space? I toyed with the idea of setting up some sort of writing station, but I do think that would start bordering on Quasimodo-like behaviour. My daughters already think of it as a magical space, because when daddy goes up there he always comes back with something from the 1990s. Malcolm Turnbull, Bill Shorten and all the other puppets from Playground Politics also live up there. Why did police search your attic? That I can’t tell you without ruining my new show. You will just have to come and see it. SARAH HARRIS Truth is way more outrageous than fiction in Sammy J’s 2017 MICF show Hero Complex, Victoria Hotel, 215 Little Collins Street, city. DOLLY DIAMOND
C
abaret queen Dolly Diamond knows a thing or two about life on the go. Between her busy calendar of shows and a new role as artistic director of the Melbourne Cabaret Festival, she’s always run off her feet. Dolly is a woman who needs – no, deserves – a tranquil sanctuary away from the limelight. What makes the bathroom your favourite space? I like the way I feel when I’m in here – I’m less on show and more relaxed. What’s the best feature? The bath is large enough for me to really sink into, where I can think and not be disturbed.
(MICHAEL RAYNER)
What was the biggest design challenge? Every other room in my house has knick-knacks and ornaments, so it was important for me to keep the bathroom simple, functional and clutter free, which is exactly what I like to do with my mind. What have you changed? It is exactly the same as when I first had it done. I’m constantly making myself up and trying to look bright and colourful, so it’s nice to have a room where I don’t have to worry about it changing. My bathroom sanctuary keeps me grounded. ● BRENDAN BALE » The Melbourne Cabaret Festival, June 20-July 2 » melbournecabaret.com » dollydiamond.com.au

FLOR AL ROM ANCE Shades of pink are ever popular, particularly in bedrooms, where they can create a luxurious, relaxing space. and harmony to your bedroom and creates a luxurious sleeping space. Arielle Lopresti, interior designer and co-founder of online homewares store, Lo & Co, says choosing the right elements is key to making this style work. Metals, marble, velvet, knits and linens come together to create a tactile space. “We’ve used different textured pillows, including velvet and linen, elements of brass through decor and lighting, and added marble homewares to create a luxe element,” Arielle says. ●
Essential elements \ + Mix materials in throws, cushions and rugs; + Good quality white linen; + Subtle colours, including blond timber.
(LISA COHEN)
How to pull the style together \ Choose different shades of white and a range of textures to create understated contrast. Despite the neutral colours, Kristy says, the natural and textural elements in this space – such as timber, wool, linen and luxe Tibetan sheepskin – ensure it’s far from boring.
(CHRISTOPHER MORRISON)
This most simple of hues can create a warm, inviting space. Depending on your style, the look can be kept classic – crisp cotton sheets, four-poster bed and touches of gold and glass in side tables and lamps – or can be stripped back to a more relaxed, “boho” look. This space (right) by Norsu Interiors is a great example of the latter. The white brick wall acts as a bedhead and the black and white prints add contrast, without dominating the room. “The raw and feminine nature of the Love Warriors Dogma print was our inspiration for creating this relaxed Scandinavian boho space,” Norsu co-owner Kristy Sadlier says. “All aspects of the room have a subtle connection to this beautiful piece of art, to make it stand out as the main focal point.” ●
Best tip \ Create an additional relaxation zone by adding a chair, such as Norsu’s Byron Bay Gypsy hanging chair. » norsu.com.au
TEX TURE TROVE Creating a beautiful space to relax and recharge is as much about considering the way a room feels as it is about the look. Using an array of textures adds a sense of balance
How to pull the style together \ Consider which materials you want to use, and then repeat them throughout the room. Look for highly textured items, including chunky knit throws, and even sequined cushions if you’re a fan of some bling. Essential elements \ + An upholstered bedhead; + A mixture of fabrics in bedding, cushions and throws; + A considered colour palette. Best tip \ Create layers of texture on your side tables with books, trays and vases in various sizes and materials. » loandcointeriors.com.au

DAVE HUGHES
S
tand-up comic, radio and TV presenter Dave Hughes has spent a lot of time chilling in green rooms waiting for the show to go on. Now he has his very own at the new St Kilda home he shares with his wife Holly, their three children and dog Barkly. Why is the courtyard your favourite place? We used to live in an 1860s terrace, which was a beautiful old house but it totally missed the light. When we built this place, the big thing was to have a courtyard that captured the light. Most days you will find me out there working, just tapping away on my laptop. What’s the best feature? Apart from the light, the Virginia creeper, which dominates and hangs right down to the table, so it really is a green room.
(MICHAEL RAYNER)
Is the courtyard used by the rest of the family? We had 50 people out there for Christmas lunch, which was a massive production. The kids are allowed to draw on the walls and Barkly likes to hang out with me, too.
LouvreTec The Architects Choice
Anything you’d change? When it rains you have to come inside, so some sort of covered area might be worth thinking about. Also sometimes the bees take over the creeper. ● SARAH HARRIS » Hughesy’s 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival show Deluded is at the Athenaeum Theatre, March 30-April 22. any modern homes don’t have much space to spare for a garden; the yard is often just a few paces in each direction. But with thoughtful planning and some imagination, even a courtyard can become a botanic wonderland – and the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show has set up the perfect challenge to prove it. The Boutique Garden Competition challenges landscape architects, designers and students to design a 5x5-metre space. The five finalists will build their gardens at MIFGS, which kicks off on March 29. Emmaline Bowman, 29, has won a place in the finals just months after setting up her own company, Stem Landscape Design. Growing up on a farm in East Gippsland, Emmaline developed a passion for revegetating creeks and wildlife corridors. Her master’s degree work won her an award for bringing animals into the landscape, and that has been her focus since. “Humans have become disconnected from nature, but when we’re stimulated by plants or animals our health improves,” she says. “I’ve gone into my boutique garden with this concept – mine is an ecosystem. It’s also a very soft and inviting landscape with lots of plants and water. The challenge is keeping it simple and having zones that complement each other – it’s easy to put too much in a small space.” But Emmaline finds space limitations can help, too. “The benefits are you can create perspective and views more easily. In a little plot, if you frame it well you can capture what it’s all about immediately, whereas in a bigger garden you have to help people find that journey.” Another finalist is Joel Barnett, 34, from InStyle Gardens in Geelong. After two years of helping students construct their MIFGS show designs, Joel entered the new Boutique Garden category in his own right last year and came third. Apart from the logistics of building a temporary garden in an inner-city park with several tree protection zones to work around, Joel says scale is the biggest challenge. “Scale becomes much more important in such a small area. Last year, I used a curved bench seat that was maybe a bit big for the site. Another lesson is just being more organised and having as much as possible built beforehand.” Landscapers have nine days to construct their show gardens and, because the Carlton Gardens is a World Heritage Site, nothing is allowed to penetrate the ground. The theme for Joel’s garden this year is “lush”, inspired by his love of tropical foliage and a desire to create a holiday-type environment at home; a style that is much in demand in the holiday homes he landscapes on the Bellarine Peninsula and Great Ocean Road. “I love plants with interesting foliage all year round. There is still a big push towards low-maintenance gardens and foliage plants are low-maintenance anyway, much more so than lawns,” he says. As well as a plunge pool, deck and pergola, Joel’s design features vertical gardens and green walls. He is also keen to make the most of the Gardens by Twilight evening session on Friday, March 31. “Using lights is an underrated part of garden design – you can play with shadows and it looks completely different to during the day.” ●
local wildlife, what you want to fix and what you want to keep. Keep the space simple and uncluttered. Use vertical elements to maximise the space. If using decking or paving, use smaller boards or pavers to create more detail. Soft, light colours make a space seem bigger. Consider the scale of furniture. A table with a glass top or chairs with holes in the pattern can feel less obtrusive. Create a focal point and frame the garden through planting, art or furniture. Activate the senses – it’s easier to achieve sensory design in a small area that captures smells, sounds, and temperatures. If you want a fruit tree, go for a pretrained, espaliered one. Engage a designer to help create your design and remember that builders should be registered for projects of more than $5000. Domestic building insurance is needed for work over $16,000. ●

OUTDOORS \ THE LATEST LOOKS & HOW TO GET THEM

Y E A R- RO U N D CO CO O N I N G Soft interiors are extending to our outdoor living areas, with more comfort in seating and “cocooning” options that use layering and texture – according to furniture retailer Globe West, which has an extensive outdoor collection. Spending time outdoors is no longer limited to the summer months, either, as we put more emphasis and thought into creating cosy outdoor retreats to enjoy the cooler months. ●
How to pull the style together \ There’s unlimited design potential for outdoor spaces. Choose a soft and comfortable modular outdoor sofa. Look for premium sun-proof fabrics and durable, quick-dry foams. Essential elements \ + Textural interest through a mix of materials and colours; + Flooring is really important to create continuity; + Warm neutrals are calming to the eye and often easier to live with. » globewest.com.au

Evolution \ This trend is influenced by architecture and changing lifestyles. Outdoor spaces are protected for autumn and winter and have integrated fireplaces. As life speeds up and we lead hyper-connected lives, having a sense of comfort and escapism in our own homes has never been so important.
Best tip \ Don’t be afraid to style your outdoor living zone as you would inside – use ottomans, small tables, throws and planters to create a resort feeling at home.

The garden will increasingly be an activated space, becoming a cross-purpose zone for the entire family, says landscape designer Phillip Withers. This trend is not about al fresco entertainment; it’s about really bringing the outdoors to life as a fully immersive space to eat, graze and engage with nature. Children can play, pets can roam, and adults can forage for flowers or pick herbs. ● Evolution \ As we turn to more organic and sustainable lifestyles, the environment increasingly embodies ideas of renewal and connectivity.

THE WILD LOOK How to pull the style together \ Start with the family. Install a trampoline, or simply let your child swing off a tree. Essential elements \ + Meandering paths and immersive spaces. + Areas of respite surrounded by plants. Best tip \ To activate a space, you have to get the plants and atmosphere right. Phillip recommends using a biodiverse palette. » phillipwithers.com
Go wild. According to landscape architect Jim Fogarty, the perennial plantings trend is increasingly popular as an antithesis to another current craze, “lawn porn”. The idea of the wild look “is to try to make your garden beds look meadowy, romantic, unplanned; to control your garden to make it look uncontrolled”. ● Evolution \ The origin goes back to Dutch designers, and Americans such as James van Sweden also did it well. The current global popularity stems from designers such as Piet Oudolf.
How to pull the style together \ More relevant here is a similar approach using Australian natives to get a more natural feel with planting. Essential elements \ + Grasses to pull the look together. + Keep hard structures, such as paving and retaining walls, simple and understated. Best Tip \ Choose a basic grouping of plants and repeat. » jimfogartydesign.com.au

his 2011 house could easily pass as an Edwardian period piece, with its heritage-esque facade and a host of matching interior features. While building the house, the vendors maintained a strict a commitment to adding detailed features such as ceiling roses, picture rails and working open fireplaces. There are spotted gum floorboards throughout the living areas, with tiled bathrooms and carpeted bedrooms. From the outset, the vendors made clear their desire for a single-storey residence with “provincial-inspired living”. They loved the look of weatherboard houses, but did not want the maintenance, so fibre-cement weatherboards have been used on the facade, with brick elsewhere. Even the entry is traditional, with a glossy central front door opening from the elevated front verandah. Inside, there’s a door into the garage on the left, and, on the right, double doors to the formal lounge room with gas fireplace. Next off the central hallway are two bedrooms, the main on the left. It has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. Then comes the highlight of the house, an expansive openplan living area that includes the kitchen and meals zones. The white kitchen matches the heritage feel with an island bench and a wide stainless-steel stove set in a manteltopped alcove. Hard-wearing stone surfaces bring modern convenience, as does the butler’s pantry. A triumph of organisation, this room has ample pantry space, including room for a second fridge, and houses the dishwasher. The kitchen looks across the living area with its open fireplace and out through bifold doors to the covered entertainment area. “Deck” is not a word that does this area justice; it has built-in cabinetry with electricity, running water and gas plumbing for a barbecue. At the rear of the property, steps lead up to the solar-heated saltwater pool. Surrounded with bluestone paving and a glass fence, it is a thoroughly modern addition to this heritagethemed house. Back inside, a door in a corner of the family zone leads to a small hallway at the rear of the house. The other bedrooms, both with walk-in wardrobes, and the family bathroom are here. This bathroom is one of the house’s standout features. It has a freestanding bath, double vanity, wet-room shower and timber shutters that open for a leafy outlook while bathing. Last, but by no means least, are a spacious study off the kitchen and the nearby laundry. The laundry has direct access to the garden, and a drying cupboard with hanging space. The front and back gardens are landscaped with roses, crabapples and camellias, as well as vegetable and herb beds. The block covers about 813 square metres. The property is in the zone for Blackburn Primary and Blackburn High. It is also close to independent schools. Recreational options within walking distance include Morton Park, Blackburn Lake Sanctuary and Cootamundra Walk. ● AMELIA BARNES property@domain.com.au

DONCASTER \ 6 ELLA COURT If you had any doubt that this sprawling five-bedroom house was well set up for a family, then surely the grand cubby house on the front lawn is sufficient proof. More akin to a small separate house, this lavish play space has a slide, climbing wall, and its own elevated verandah with an easterly outlook. Along with the grand entry gates and balcony, this is makes for a memorable first impression. Nor is the interior of the house any disappointment. The broad floor plan starts with the family area and kitchen to the left of the front door. The provincial-style kitchen has granite benchtops, a timber-topped island bench and a walk-in pantry. Opposite the gas open fireplace in the family area is a door to the front balcony, and a bay window overlooking the garden. A study nook, family bathroom with double vanity, laundry with rear access and three bedrooms complete the remainder of the upper floor. At one end of this level, the main bedroom has a marble-tiled en suite with granite vanity and frameless shower, as well as a door to the back garden. Head down to the lower ground floor to find the remaining bedrooms (one with en suite), a rumpus room, storeroom and the double garage. In the rear garden, there’s a gas-heated, saltwaterchlorinated swimming pool, decked undercover barbecue area with bar, and vegetable garden. How much does it cost to sell a house? When choosing an agent to sell your home don’t make the mistake of only looking at the commission rate each agent charges. If you base your decision on commission alone you will be in for an unpleasant surprise.
$100,000 more, but your agent couldn’t get it from them because of their poor negotiation skill or because of their choice of selling method. The amount you lose could be as much as 10% or more of your selling price.
So, how much does it really cost to sell your home?
In their quest to find the best agent some sellers get derailed and start looking for the best deal. These are two different things. It’s critical that you evaluate agents on their marketing and more importantly their negotiation skills. Their negotiation skill will determine whether they are skilful enough to get the buyer’s highest price for your home or not. If they are not skilled they will undersell your home and you stand to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars, and guess what, you won’t even know it.
There are three costs to consider when choosing an agent. 1. The agent’s commission rate. 2. The amount of advertising and marketing they are asking you to commit to. 3. Finally, the cost of underselling. This is the biggest cost and it’s a “hidden” cost. More on this and how you can avoid it later. Typical agent fees average between 2% to 4%. Some agents will offer a lower commission but charge higher marketing fees and upfront advertising costs. Many property owners are talked into committing to unnecessary and expensive advertising campaigns. These can typically range from $5,000 to $25,000, and are payable regardless of whether you sell or not.
To cut costs some sellers hire a discount agent. What these sellers don’t realise is, in order to survive, the discount agent is more concerned with getting the property sold regardless of the price. This often leads to selling your home at a lower price. What if the buyer was prepared to pay, say
84 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ MARCH 22, 2017
Another area to be careful of is the method of sale you are encouraged to use. If your agent’s preferred selling method focusses on your lowest price, or your reserve, and not on the buyer’s highest price, you are again at risk of underselling your home. The method of sale and your agent’s negotiation skill level will have the biggest bearing on how much more you get in your pocket, than any concession you may get in their commission rate.
