THE BEGUILED
D
ecades from now, 2017 could well be remembered as The Year of Nicole Kidman. Sure, the Aussie actor has won fans, and even an Oscar, in a career spanning more than 30 years, but in 2017 she has finally managed to exorcise a persistent ghost – a nagging doubt about her acting prowess. So far this year, there’s been an Oscar nod for her supporting role in Lion; the huge international success of HBO’s Big Little Lies, for which she won universal critical acclaim; her domination of the Cannes Film Festival, where she starred in no fewer than four films, and won a special award; rave reviews of her lead role in The Beguiled; and a part in Aquaman, the latest addition to DC’s burgeoning cinematic universe. She’s also front and centre at Melbourne’s own international film festival, which kicks off this week, starring in two of MIFF’s biggest draw cards: Yorgos Lanthimos’ hotly anticipated psychological thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and a special screening of the next instalment in Jane Campion’s television masterpiece Top of the Lake: China Girl. At 50, it seems Nicole is finally cementing her place as a serious, and multitalented, power player in the film business. But while it’s tempting to think it’s all part of a mature master career plan, she says it’s actually quite the contrary.

NICO
“I’m completely spontaneous and random in my decisions,” she says, laughing. “Never let it be said that I don’t have diverse taste – I love jumping into the deep end. Why not? That’s my favourite saying, I think it has such potential and choice – why not?” Nicole admits she has “maybe played it a little safe” in the past. “I went for work that I thought I was meant to do, which spoke to the idea of what and who an actress is supposed to be. But, for the most part, I’ve followed my own spirit, which motivates me to go against the grain.” It was that spirit, she says, that led her to Sofia
Coppola, and her latest film project The Beguiled, which snagged the best director award at Cannes. Nicole says she had seen Sofia at parties, but had never worked up the courage to actually speak to her about a part. “I’ve been ready and waiting for years,” Nicole says. “She came to see the play [[Photograph Photograph 51 51]] I was doing in London, which was nerve-wracking. Then we went to dinner afterwards, and she told me about The Beguiled. ““As soon as I heard the name of the film it did exactly what it says – I was beguiled.” In the film, a remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood
significant moment now that we need to capitalise on. We can’t rest on our laurels, we can’t ever get complacent because it will revert back to what it was. So I’m going to keep talking about it, keep pushing, keep promoting women, create opportunity for women.” Her experience working on The Beguiled immediately followed another female-dominated project, Big Little Lies. “To be working with such a strength of women, in two casts back to back, is a sacred gift,” Nicole says. She was delighted by the response to the HBO miniseries, and has fingers crossed for a second season. “We want it. I want it. I love that I’m being asked about it, it makes my heart sing.” “We’re a way off if anything does happen … it’s down to the writing, and the quality of the characters, it has to be the same quality as before. There’s a lot to discuss, and we’re in the discussion stages.”
H
OLE classic but told from a feminine point of view, Nicole plays Miss Martha, the morally ambiguous headmistress of a girls’ boarding school during the American Civil War. Trouble brews after the arrival of a wounded soldier, played by Colin Farrell. Nicole thrived working with Sofia. “I hope this isn’t the only time we work together, I really hope it isn’t,” she says. “The quiet, elegant power in her direction is like nothing I’ve worked with before. It’s so subtle, and she allows you to discover your own objective and emotion. It’s a remarkable gift.” Another gift, she says, was the rare opportunity to
work with a mostly female cast. An outspoken champion of equality in filmmaking, Nicole says she loved Wonder Woman so much that she “came out of the theatre grinning and punching the air”. But she reckons there’s more work to be done to level the playing field. “All I’ll say is, ‘Look at the statistics of women in film and you’ll see that there’s still a gross imbalance’. There’s no getting away with it. I’m always going to support female directors, I’m not going to go a year or two without working with a female filmmaker,” she says. “We have to support each other. We are at such a
er portrayal of domestic abuse was one of the biggest talking points surrounding Big Little Lies; nevertheless, she says her husband, Keith Urban, was an avid fan of the show. “He was glued to every episode. “I know those scenes weren’t comfortable for him to watch, I don’t think they were comfortable for anyone to watch but especially when it’s your partner in them, it’s tough. But he gets how important it is to have authenticity in telling these stories, to get the message out there and maybe help others in similar relationships.” Next up, Nicole is excited about her role in Aquaman, and working with her “good friend” and fellow Aussie, director James Wan. “It shoots in Australia, so it’s the perfect excuse to be close to my mother for an extended period, and it’s definitely an excuse to have fun. There’s been a lot of intensity recently in my work, I just want to have fun on this.” But while blockbusters are fun, Nicole says she’s mostly drawn to indie projects. “It’s art to me, and art is never about money. It’s also about working with new minds, fresh talents, who usually have no money to play with – and if I can help in whatever way I can, bring my weight to it, I will,” she says. “There’s so much talent out there and I want to constantly mine that reserve, unearth these rare gems. I like to help new arrivals because I was in the same position, someone gave me a chance.” ● TOP OF THE LAKE & THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER Both screening at the Melbourne International Film festival. miff.com.au THE BEGUILED \ rated M. INNOVATION
T
ashi Dorjee and Rob Walker were sitting in a cafe in Singapore when they hit on a brilliant idea. By day, the place ran much like any other kopitiam – a traditional Singaporean cafe where older locals gather to drink coffee. But by night, it would transform into a pizzeria and bar, bringing in a younger crowd for after-work drinks. “The concept was amazing, utilising one hospitality venue for different things,” Tashi says. It sparked the idea for a company that sets up coworking spaces in restaurants and bars that would otherwise be sitting empty during the day. Almost everyone’s onto ride and house sharing these days, thanks to Uber and Airbnb, but there’s a huge array of shareable goods and services out there. Tashi and Rob’s company, Two Space, is just one of a slew of startups taking advantage of the rise and rise of the sharing economy.
The twenty-something mates launched their company in Sydney in October and opened their first Melbourne venue at The Cider House in Fitzroy in June. At night, the space bustles with beer and cider lovers sampling brews from the 66 taps at the expansive bar. Come morning, graphic artists, entrepreneurs and others plug in their laptops in the dining room or the front bar, and get to work. Two Space provides venues with Wi-Fi, power sources for laptops and a “community manager” who looks after any housekeeping needs. Members pay $169 a month – subtantially less than a traditional co-working space – and venues receive a percentage of the fees. “The venues say the money is great, but they prefer the foot-traffic and the different types of people that come to the space,” Tashi says. Next step for Two Space is an online platform that

will connect people based on their work. Tashi believes it’s just the beginning. “We honestly believe everything’s going to be shared in 10 years’ time,” he says, “whether it be cars or beds or space.” Sustainability was the catalyst for 34-year-old stylist Shanya Suppasiritad to start her clothessharing platform Tumnus, after she noticed her clients and friends constantly chucking out unwanted items in favour of the new and on-trend. “Six tonnes of fabric waste is being thrown out

Shanya’s plan is to take Tumnus to Sydney by next year, and eventually overseas. “The idea is that you’ll be able to travel light – just put your basics in a small suitcase – and then book your wardrobe ahead in the destination you are travelling to.” She hopes Tumnus will encourage people to
invest in quality items, rather than cheap, fastfashion. She also hopes it might foster a few friendships along the way. “If you build up a community, it’s not hard to get people to be openminded and share,” she says. In that vein, another new sharing platform, Parlour, helps people host gigs in their own homes by connecting them with musicians who find booking traditional venues too costly, or who want to play more intimate shows. Founders Matt Walters and Glenn Luck say it’s almost like a dating site for musicians and hosts. . After starting in Melbourne in 2015, Parlour now brings house gigs to cities across Australia, and has attracted musicians including Bob Evans and Boy & Bear. Now they have set their sights on the US. “There’s a connection that you have with your fans at a house concert that you probably won’t get at a venue show,” says Matt. “In an ideal world, it would just be part of live touring for any artist. Paul Kelly, Bernard Fanning – they would be amazing.” ● BY J E M I M A H C L EG G

or a young woman of a certain age, kissing Harry Potter might seem a dream come true. But for 23-year-old Melbourne actor Lily Sullivan, locking lips with Daniel Radcliffe was only one of several awkward moments while shooting new film Jungle. “On the first day, he and I got back to the house where we were all staying, had a lovely chat and then when we went to say goodnight, I accidentally called him Harry,” Lily says. “He laughed, but all I could say was I’d known Harry for 12 years and him I’d only just met.” Needless to say, her friends were extraordinarily jealous of her Potter pash. But Lily has had the sort of career anyone might envy. Plucked from obscurity at 17 to star alongside Toni Colette in PJ Hogan’s Mental, she has gone on to work with other big name talent in a series of acclaimed films such as

2013’s Galore. She plays Daniel Radcliffe’s almostgirlfriend in Jungle, which has been chosen to open this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival. Later this year she’ll be on our TV screens as Miranda in the highly anticipated remake of Picnic at Hanging Rock. The six-part series promises to bring more depth to the girls’ characters than Peter Weir’s 1975 film allowed. “They had about three lines each,” Lily says. “We flesh out these beautiful, powerful and twisted young ladies and dive into this boarding school full of girls who are being poked and prodded and groomed for auction. It’s about them finding their sense of self and liberation in a time that was not kind to women.” Over the course of the shoot, Lily experienced some of this unkindness first hand, suffering the indignity of being squeezed into the constrictive

I feel like that was the way I could understand what it was like to be woman of that time,” she says. “You got an idea of how limited their life was – how long you could sit, how long you could stand, how long before you had to retire to your room. I’m currently living in my pyjamas, which has been a big change.” But Lily might not get to enjoy pyjama life for long. This year looks like a turning point, with the gaps between projects rapidly shrinking. A mystery project is due to be announced and she has plans to head to Hollywood to chase up opportunities. For now, she’s looking forward to seeing Jungle on
the big screen at the MIFF opening gala this week. She says she finds its real-life story — in which Daniel’s Israeli backpacker Yossi becomes stranded alone in the Amazon for three weeks – to be extremely inspiring. Even if she has no plans to follow in Yossi’s footsteps. “Oh my god, I’d be useless,” she says. “I can barely get from Brunswick to Fitzroy without getting blisters on my feet.” ● MYKE BARTLETT

It dates back many centuries – apparently Marco Polo was a fan – but the yummy, yeasty, yoghurty concoction has now well and truly made it to the Western world.

lattes and butter coffee have all seduced wellness warriors with promises of health-boosting powers. Why are we so into wellness tonics like kombucha? “People are increasingly aware of the importance of gut health and reducing sugar intake, and kombucha is a great-tasting drink that is genuinely healthy,” says Emmet Condon, the co-founder of Melbourne brand Remedy Kombucha. “It’s full of good bacteria, healthy organic acids and it’s a rich source of dietary fibre.” As the lines between food and medicine become more blurred, it’s no wonder we’re looking towards food and drink for its restorative benefits. Jon Stevens
I
t doesn’t take long for my planned coffee with Jon Stevens to go awry. Sitting down, the former INXS and Noiseworks frontman reveals he no longer drinks the stuff. Even the aromatic brew offered by Albert Park’s Dundas & Faussett can’t tempt him back. This morning, this hard man of rock is sipping lemongrass and ginger tea. “I don’t really drink alcohol any more either,” Jon says, making a joke of lifting a dainty finger as he lifts his cup. “You can only drink so much and survive.” You can’t blame him for taking things easy. At 54, Jon knows he’s lucky to be here. He had a double heart bypass in 2010. “I was in hospital for a month, lying there thinking ‘I really want to meet my grandkids’,” he says. Luckily, he didn’t have long to wait. Jon recently moved to Melbourne to spend as much time as possible with his daughter’s two young children.
Today, he looks a picture of health. But death still seems to be on Jon’s mind. It lurks beneath his rootsy new album Starlight, co-written with legendary Eurythmics songwriter Dave Stewart. “Most people don’t discuss death but, for some reason I do,” he says. “I think it’s a beautiful transition that we all end up getting at the end of the day. It’s the one thing we can’t escape.” When it comes to music, Jon has no doubt he’s in it for the long haul. As a young musician, he was inspired by seeing elder statesmen Muddy Waters and “Wee Willie” Dixon perform the blues at a gig in LA. “I left thinking ‘that’s where I want to be when I grow up’,” he says. He certainly seems more comfortable looking forward than looking back. “Am I happy with me as a human being? Yeah, I am,” he says. “I’ve got two grandchildren. I love what I do. I’m blessed in so many ways.” ●

The vibe at Bosozoku is biker-boy-meets-Harajuku-girl, with waiters in studded leather vests, bike-chain chandeliers and bar-stools fashioned from motorbike disc brakes. It’s crazy, but somehow it all works. They’ve amped up the fun factor with a cozy karaoke lounge, Mario Kart gaming den, pool table and a hot tub that pumps out dry ice instead of bubbles. But Bosozoku is not all party tricks. The menu, overseen by former Wabi Sabi chef Tomoya Kawasaki, focuses on quality burgers and inventive cocktails, albeit dressed in fast-food trappings. The Road Rage burger comes wrapped in greaseproof paper with a side of fries in a cardboard carton, but it’s made with sliced Wagyu beef stuffed inside a beetroot brioche bun. The alcoholic Bosozoku Bubble Tea is served in a plastic-topped cup, but is a finely balanced blend of Bacardi, housemade matcha tea, yuzu and apple with pomegranate popping pearls. There are also tasty bar snacks such as karage chicken and gyoza – just the thing to go with the impressive selection of sakes and Japanese whiskies. ●

JERRY SEINFELD
KEVIN MAZUR/GETTY IMAGES FOR BABY BUGGY
Who is he? American standup comedian who brought observational comedy crashing into the mainstream. He’s touring Australia for the first time in two decades. He does look familiar. If you’ve switched on a TV in the past 20 years, chances are you’ve caught a glimpse of Seinfeld. Touted as a comedy about nothing, it was a sitcom without a situation. An estimated 76 million viewers tuned into the 1998 finale. What’s he been doing since then? Not a whole lot. Part of the appeal of Seinfeld was that you never really believed Jerry was an actor; he was one of us, a real person who had stumbled onto the set of a TV show. His greatest success since the sitcom is interview web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. What has he said? “Australia may be far in miles but I feel very close to the people because of our mutual comedy connection.” He suggested the delay between tours was down to how long it takes him to come up with a joke, telling one radio intreviewer he can spend seven years on a single gag. “The quality of it does not reflect all that time, it’s not that good,” he admitted.
What can we expect? An hour and a half of Jerry’s best material, with audience questions as an encore. ● SEINFELD LIVE \ Hisense Arena, August 6-8, $203.50 ● hisensearena.com.au/events/jerry-seinfeld

s someone with more 16 years’ experience in the fitness industry, trust me, I have heard it all. “I’m too busy” and “I’m too tired” are the most common excuses clients give me. But the craziest thing I hear quite regularly is, “Sam, as soon as I get fit I’m going to start your program”. When it comes to embarking on a new health and fitness journey, you don’t need to be fit to get started, you just need to start. For most people, simply taking that first step is the hardest part. Whether you’re joining a gym, signing up to an online program or wanting to go for a daily walk, I promise that once you break through that initial fear barrier and put the wheels in motion, the only regret you will have is, “I wish I had done this earlier”. Each week I’ll be bringing you practical tips on excercise, nutrition and mindfulness to help you get the most out of life. First up, here are my #Sam7 tips that will not only get you started, but will also ensure you keep going. Remember, sustainability is key if you want to make long-lasting change. ● CHECK OUT \ Sam’s online program at 28bysamwood.com

HAVE A PL AN I work in 28-day blocks. It’s the magic number that’s enough to see results but short enough that you don’t get bored or feel the mountain is too high. Schedule workouts, plan meals and remember, preparation is key. If you don’t know where you are going, that’s where you will end up. ● SET YOURSELF A SPECIFIC GOAL & TELL SOMEONE ABOUT IT Write it down, tell someone about it and make yourself accountable. You Y might think you need to lose 30 kilograms or run a marathon, but you might lose motivation if your goal appears out of reach. Smaller, more achievable goals can keep you in a positive momentum until your bigger goal is closer. ●

B E PATIENT Checking the scales every hour of every day is destructive. Trust the process and remember there is no quick fix. Scales can come in handy if your goal is weight loss, but I don’t recommend weighing in more than once a fortnight or your healthy obsession can become unhealthy. ● D ON ’T WORRY IF YOU S TUFF UP That makes you human. What’s important is how you react and that you keep going. Don’t let one little bump be the end of the road. ● MIX IT UP Your friend swears by spin? Great. Y Your mum loves Pilates? Fantastic. It can be easy to get into a rut if you force yourself to do workouts you don’t enjoy. Variety and consistency are key; try a few things to find what works for you. ●

E NJOY THE PRO CE S S In the fitness industry, we use the term “make the medicine taste better”. The more you enjoy the process (which could involve working out with a friend, getting in the kitchen and discovering new, delicious and healthy recipes, or simply putting together a killer workout playlist), the more likely it is you’ll stick to it. ● CELEB RATE THE LIT TLE WINS T keep motivation high, don’t forget To to celebrate the little wins along the way. Whether you eliminated your 3pm snack, cut out alcohol or beat your 5k PB, don’t forget to celebrate the progress you have made. If you’ve previously rewarded yourself with alcohol or food, it’s time to start celebrating with something constructive: new workout gear, music or a relaxing massage are my favourite ways to treat myself. ●

hat’s your idea of a perfect holiday? Whether it’s trawling Parisian markets for vintage treasures, discovering the freshest sushi in Osaka, or getting horizontal on a Mexican beach, one thing is clear: we all want something a little different from our time off. And coupled up or not, more Aussies are choosing to travel alone, with fearless females leading the charge. Businesses are getting on board too, driving a recent boom in women-only travel companies.
“stuff” for meaningful adventures, they’re searching for truly authentic travel experiences. Social media has also fuelled the trend, spawning thousands of “solo travel women” Pinterest boards and Insta-inspo galore – check out the thousands of awesome #viajosola (“I travel solo”) posts. There’s no doubt stepping out solo can be scary – but travelling alone allows you to truly immerse yourself in a different culture. Moving out of your comfort zone sharpens your focus, and makes discovering the distinctive language, cuisine and ways of life of your host country so much more rewarding.
What’s behind the trend? Women are more independent, educated and wealthy than ever before and, as many forgo more
But what about safety? Risk is everywhere, of course, but some destinations are safer than others for women travelling alone.

Generally, places with restrictions on women staying out late or with strict clothing rules should ring alarm bells. First-timers might be keen to join up with fellow female adventurers. One great option is Tourlina – think Tinder for travelling women. The women-only app connects (fully screened) travellers with similar interests and destinations to meet up and share a journey – or just a day – together. Australian tour company Women’s Own Adventure arranges small group trips with exciting itineraries such as Nepalese teahouse treks, Antarctic adventures and hikes through the Bulgarian countryside. So pack some comfy flats and get out there – walking is the best way to get to know a new place. Plus, learning a few basic phrases will make a great impression on the locals, and make your journey even more fulfilling. But the best part about travelling solo? You get to choose your own adventure. You don’t need to worry about anyone else. Be mindful of your safety, of course, but don’t let security concerns close you off to new experiences or conversations – you never know what magical moments they might lead to. ●

Reflecting on the community
MICHAEL RAYNER

arra Valley Grammar is changing as fast as its surrounds. On an icy winter’s day in Ringwood, Yarra Valley Grammar principal Dr Mark Merry is warming up in his office. He’s watching over students and grounds staff going about their day in the beautiful surrounds. Among the staff working on the bushland gardens is a Yarra alumnus – one of several ex-students who’ve returned to work in roles that also include teaching, sports coaching and tutoring. Such is the lure of the community-connected culture of the school in Melbourne’s leafy outer east. “We have an extraordinarily engaged alumni in a number of areas across the school,” Mark says. “They come back because they love the place – they don’t want to move away.” He has been at the helm of YVG for eight years, overseeing the growth and change at the school and in the wider Ringwood community. Student numbers at YVG have grown 30 per cent since 2009. Reasons for that include more families moving into Ringwood and more students attending from beyond the local area. “Once upon a time, we were seen to be a school in Ringwood catering for the local community. Now we’re seen a bit more broadly,” Mark says. “We’ve enrolled students from Doncaster and Templestowe, Blackburn and Box Hill. There’s even interest now from Wantirna and Knox.” The growing enrolments have brought changes across the school – including in infrastructure and the type and diversity of subjects offered. “Physically the school’s changing. We’ve had a major building project each year for the past eight years, so there’s a lot of infrastructure coming in,” Mark says. “There’s been a growth in our languages. Traditionally, we’ve taught French, Indonesian and Japanese. Now Chinese is our second-most popular language. “I’ve [also] seen a greater diversity in the student population. I think it’s fantastic and we’re reflecting cultural diversity in the community.” The changes at YVG have gone hand in hand with wider changes in education – including the expanding use of technology and social media – and a growing interest in accelerated programs. “We have students who are very academic, so we run an enhancement program here called the
D R M A R K M E R RY
Levavi Program, which we introduced this year,” he says. “We invite students (in Years 6-9), in the areas of maths, science, English and humanities, into extension classes and enrichment programs.” For students who need more academic assistance, there is a robust individual programs department. “As a school, you’ve got to be catering for everyone,” Mark says. “That’s a big challenge. But we make sure that whoever comes here has an opportunity for success.” Such care for students, and for the wider community, is part of the YVG philosophy. “We’re not just a school in Ringwood, we’re part of Ringwood. We see ourselves as being a community resource,” he says. “We have community groups using our sports facilities, and that’s been a long tradition … we’re entering into a partnership this year with Paul Sadler swim schools.” The school is building an indoor swimming centre
that will be used by students and for children from outside YVG to learn to swim. Likewise, Mark says, students give back to their community. “Every one of our students is involved in community outreach, whether it be our littlest ones fund-raising for whales, or our older students taking part in a program that tutors refugee students who want to learn English, or working in soup kitchens,” he says. “This year, for the fourth year in a row, we were the biggest fund-raisers for the Royal Children’s Hospital of all the schools in the state. “We want to do it because we’re part of the community here. But, also, one of the school’s strong philosophies is that when our students go out in the community they can contribute in a positive way.” That includes the broader YVG community, in which many Yarra Old Grammarians are helping to lead into the future. ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

It is wonderful to see in such lively, inquiring minds, a willingness to strive for excellence as they explore and engage, observe and wonder and challenge and question their world.” Elena and Keith believe in educating students and guiding and developing staff. Keith says teaching children is about fostering spirituality, as well as academic learning. This is especially important as Xavier College is a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, which encourages community service and a commitment to social justice. “I am passionate about ensuring we develop allrounded students who are not just academic but also strong and committed world citizens,” Keith says. “Ours is a holistic approach.” Both campuses are designed for students to learn from teachers and from each other. oung students always have much to learn, and building this knowledge comes from beyond subjects they study, technology they use and books they read. It also comes from the many experiences and interactions inside and outside the classroom. At Xavier College, learning inside and outside of classrooms is something that is keenly understood. The program at the school’s early-years campuses has been designed to encourage boys and girls, from three-year-old kindergarten to year 4, to learn through experiences Xavier offers and also through the International Baccalaureate primary years program. The dean of early years at Burke Hall, Elena Serraglio, and her counterpart at Kostka Hall, Keith Newman, say early-years students are encouraged to develop a love of learning that will continue long after they have finished at Xavier. “Learning within the International Baccalaureate (which uses student inquiry and instruction) sparks a joy and interest in learning that will stay with a

oth early-years campuses also offer specialist subjects, including art, Italian, music, an instrumental program, physical education, digital technologies and library. Opportunities to learn outside the classrooms of Kostka Hall and Burke Hall include educational trips, visiting performers and guest speakers. “As the boys and girls move through the school, they have been encouraged to participate in musical groups and choirs,” Elena says. “Co-curricular programs, such as Makerspace and outdoor education programs, all provide additional opportunities.” Elena and Keith say working in a co-educational campus is rewarding and adds to the learning experience (boys from the early-years program move on to Xavier’s middle and senior boys-only campus). “A co-educational environment allows for diverse opinions, viewpoints, modes of operation and problem-solving strategies to be expressed in classes, which is important in creating a good learning and social environment,” Elena says. “Working together in the classroom, and in games and projects, provides children with the opportunity to learn from each other intellectually and socially.” Staff at both campuses also work together, adopting a passion for life-long learning. “Teaching and learning is our core business,” Elena says. “As teachers, the learning journey never ends. We … are always looking to improve our practice by sharing the expertise of staff across the campuses.” Staff also learn from the students, Keith says. “Children have taught me that I don’t know everything,” he says. “I always say to my students that the journey to learn never finishes. We can always find new and interesting facts … as true inquirers, we never stop learning.” ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

s the designer and founder of Misha Collection, Michelle Aznavorian should probably be living in an inner-city penthouse: her glamorous fashion label is worn by the likes of the Kardashians and Hadids and stocked in more than 80 boutiques worldwide. But Michelle and her husband, Martin Perez, wanted to be close to their families and friends in the south-eastern-suburbs – and wanted the space to entertain them. They moved into their home in Glen Waverley two years ago and “completely re-landscaped”. “We renovated for eight weeks; there were 50 tradesmen here,” says Michelle, who describes her home’s clean, monochromatic interior palette, accented with “lots of mirrors and glitzy furniture”, as Hollywood regency. The couple spend a lot of time at home, whether watching movies by the fireplace or admiring the views of the Dandenongs over Sunday breakfast on the balcony. “Work life is stressful so it’s nice to come home to peace and calm,” she says. “We spent a lot of time perfecting the house to have a place to relax.” ●

Denfair forecast

ust when you thought our obsession with home design couldn’t get any more all consuming, along comes Denfair. More than 8000 people attended Australia’s leading contemporary design fair in June, flocking to see carefully curated spaces from more than 350 local and international brands and designers. From furniture design to fine art, the fair highlighted the latest trends and innovations we can expect to see this year and beyond. ●

Scandi-inspired palette was noticeably missing from this year’s fair. “The warmer tones are coming through a little more, the colder greys seem to be on the way out,” says Natalie Culina, head of commercial at King Living. The resurgence of colour for home furnishings comes as a response to the latest architectural trends, in particular the return of natural and industrial material choices. “When you’re using industrial finishes like concrete and marble, steel, you can’t continue with a grey palette, that’s where colour comes alive and it works,” Molmic creative director Anna McRae says. “People are becoming a lot more courageous with investing in pieces with colour.” ●

Indoors going outdoors
Five-star bathrooms
Just as with the fashion world, furniture design has turned to the 1970s for inspiration. Many Denfair exhibitors celebrated velvet, jewel colours and indoor plants as their piece de resistance. Anna McRae says velvet and indoor plants transport us back to a simpler time and help provide a sanctuary from the hectic world we live in. “For lounge and living room furniture, it’s about down time, about being in the moment. Interiors are reflecting that,” she says. “It’s about creating little nooks in the home where you can just slip away. It doesn’t need to be a big room, it can be a little corner in your bedroom.” ●
Beautiful and practical outdoor furniture pieces were among the most exciting elements at Denfair, with many brands showcasing pieces that could fit just as stylishly into the living room as outdoors. “I think we’re beginning to understand the aesthetics of the outside,” says John Kangas, sales consultant at Domo. “Fabrics are the in thing, they have to be tactile and practical and durable.” Melbourne design house Tait, which won the fair’s prestigious Best Product Award for its new Trace by Adam Goodrum collection, highlighted the trend toward chunky, robust and soft pieces, in shapes that encourage conversation and relaxation. ●
One of the most popular rooms when it comes to renovation and design, the bathroom has morphed from purely functional to personal retreat. The three biggest design trends we can expect to see this year and next are Nordic minimalism, neotraditional and hotel-inspired. “People are taking their cues from experiences in hotels, both local and international,” says Daniela Santilli, bathroom marketing leader at Reece. “Organic and round designs are what’s coming through for tapware. “People tend to be a bit more adventurous … We’re seeing metallics and blacks.” ●

n a drive through the lush bushland in this area, you might find yourself doing a double take when you spy a striking example of modern architecture among the trees. Through the leaves, there are glimpses of a facade that blends contemporary aesthetics and rustic materials – silver top ash and Grampians sandstone clad the exterior of this two-year-old house. Despite the established native garden that surrounds it, the house still looks brand new, and it certainly feels it. Even from the street, first impressions are strong – and the interior more than lives up to them. Behind the front door is an entry hall floored in American oak. To the left, a short hallway leads to a wing for the grown-ups. It has a private study looking out across the driveway and, further, to rolling hills. Next up, the vast main bedroom has floor-to-ceiling windows with views to the east. Expansive his-and-hers walk-in wardrobes and a spotless en suite bathroom with shower and wall-hung vanity complete the adults’ retreat. The kids also have their own wing. It has a living room with built-in storage, three large, light-filled bedrooms
(with built-in wardrobes) and a modern central bathroom (spa bath and separate shower). At the rear, and down a few steps, is a sensational openplan living area. A wall of sliding doors and skylights makes for an airy zone, while the dark polished concrete floor reflects and contrasts with the modern style throughout. The kitchen is a masterpiece. It has a 900-millimetre Ilve oven, four-metre Quantum Quartz island bench and a black tap and sink that pair well with the white benchtop. There’s masses of storage in the island bench and the adjacent walk-in pantry. Around the corner, the family room has a gas log fireplace, and a full-height picture window with a view of the leafy valley below. From the dining area, a stacker door slides away for seamless integration with the deck and garden. On the deck, a glass balustrade ensures nothing gets in the way of that view. Here, on warm summer nights, you can dine outdoors and feel as if you are in the treetops. Completing the impressive offering is a garage and parking for up to vehicles, and a large workshop. ● CHARLIE BRAITHWAITE property@domain.com.au

If ever you’ve wanted to run a victory lap – as in “awesome house, amazing garden, all mine!” – this would be the arena for it. A classic weatherboard beauty, the single-level house on 645 square metres is encircled by a garden whose sprawling lawn, dine-out areas and scooter-friendly side driveway will make kids roar with joy. The extended house has a north-facing return verandah and a front living room with an open fireplace and original ’50s cornices. A sliding door allows easy flow to the timberfloored kitchen, meals and family area, which has french doors to the covered deck. Follow the garden path to the brick-paved barbecue pergola. The three carpeted double bedrooms have wardrobes and share a beige- and white-tiled bathroom with bath and shower. There’s a powder room next to the laundry. Sunny, spacious and tucked quietly behind the Box Hill Golf Course, this will appeal to families who want immediate comfort with scope for extension later. ● ALISON BARCLAY AGENT \ Fletchers 8833 8888 PRICE \ $1.35 million – $1.45 million AUCTION \ August 5 at noon
