McManus has his own shed, which takes the form of a cluttered office and reflects his interest in military history, travel and the Geelong Football Club. “We (men) like to collect our trinkets, our memorabilia. It’s where you can go and recharge. Capra is an industrial building on a nondescript street outside the city. This is a coffee outlet that sells everything bean-related, as well as turning out fresh brews. There’s a large retail area with shelves of coffee paraphernalia. There are a few tables downstairs and a mezzanine area – enough to seat about 20 people. Most grab a takeaway coffee and a bag of their favourite beans. Definitely a place to have a quick cup rather than loitering. \

What is this Referendum on Local Councils all about? When our Constitution was written more than 112 years ago there was no mention of Federal Government funding for Local Councils or community projects. This means there is now an unforeseen loophole in the way many community projects are currently funded. It means important funds for community projects are open to challenge because Federal funding is not referred to in the Constitution. If any challenge is successful, Federal funding for important community facilities and services like ‘Roads to Recovery’, Child Care Centres, Libraries, Community Sports Grounds, Community Centres, Swimming Pools and Public Parks may have to be withdrawn. That’s why there is a referendum to bring the Constitution up to date – to ensure and protect the way many important community projects are funded.
Here are some more important things to know. Does this have the support of Federal Parliament with members voting in favour by a margin of 179 to 10? Does this have the support of Local Councils in all States and Territories around Australia?

ast year at Neil Perry’s Melbourne meat mecca, Rockpool Bar & Grill, I somewhat guiltily ordered a steak worth more than $60. I was cajoled by my dining companion, who insisted the occasion called for indulgence and was adamant that once I’d tasted the fat 36-month-old, grass-fed, 34-day-dry-aged Cape Grim sirloin, I would never look back. He was right. Likening Rockpool to Parkers Steakhouse is like comparing oranges and apples. Sure, they both specialise in beef, but Parkers is unashamedly masculine in its offerings and décor. It’s a true-blue steakhouse with all the trimmings. Menus arrive in thick plastic coverings, meats are served in slabs on sizzling cast-iron plates, and wait staff take orders and clear the tables in a heartbeat. In the centre of the dining room, two chefs sweat it out over the huge open grill, which is operating at capacity throughout my visit. Waitresses whizz platters piled with plump sausages, skewered chicken kebabs, and hefty pork ribs to thick wooden tables crowded with families and larger groups. Everything happens at a frenetic pace, which adds to the atmosphere. What is comparable between the two restaurants is the price you’ll pay for a steak. A 300-gram Australian eye fillet will set you back $52 at Parkers. While such lofty prices are not unusual at steakhouses these days, when the meat arrives with a lonely foil-wrapped baked potato and dollop of sour cream, as it did at Parkers, it better be good. In this case, I would have preferred that the eye fillet be allowed to speak for itself. Instead, the steak was dunked in a baste, as are most cuts of meat at Parkers, before being placed on the flaming open grill. Unfortunately the treatment served only to distract from the otherwise lovely burly flavour of the beef. Parkers offers a hearty selection of beef cuts in the grill section of its menu, and not all cost $50-plus. There are 500-gram T-bones, a 400-gram rib eye, as well as rump, porterhouse and eye fillet in assorted weights. Each comes served with a choice of thick-cut chips or a baked potato. Sauces are extra: $4.50 buys a choice of creamy peppercorn, mushroom, garlic or black pepper sauce in a shiny steel pouring jug. The 500-gram T-bone is a whopping hunk of meat, cooked perfectly medium-rare and bursting with big, bold flavour. Red meat is not the whole story, here. Grilled haloumi and baked mushrooms are offered as vegetarian entrée options but on our waiter’s recommendation we opt for pork spare ribs. A giant piece of meat arrives at the table on a sizzling iron pan; two racks are still joined and shimmering with their baste. There’s no prizes for presentation but the meat is luscious, tender and tears easily from the bone, and the mix of spices in the baste complements the meat. The dish is a clear standout on the night. Less so the tiger prawn skewer. Five tiger prawns

arrive grilled and threaded on a frighteningly hot steel skewer with a handful of shredded cos lettuce and a side pot of warm garlic sauce. Eager to tuck in, I singe my fingers trying to remove the prawns. I’m all for serving straight from the grill, but a warning about the heat would have been welcome. A lamb mignon skewer is lovely – four fat chunks of tender, grilled meat with a refreshing mint jelly that cleanses the palate for the next meaty piece. A banoffee tart on the dessert menu is a fitting finale.

From 1 July, Australia’s current support system for people living with disability is being progressively replaced with DisabilityCare Australia. This new scheme will help provide a better quality of life for Australians with a significant and permanent disability, and for their families and carers too.
What’s new about DisabilityCare Australia? DisabilityCare Australia is a new way of funding personalised support for people with disability. As well as looking at a person’s immediate needs, it will take a lifelong approach and enable people with disability to have choice and control over their supports. It will focus on early intervention, recognising that timely support can minimise the impact of a disability on individuals, families and carers. Assistance will be provided at the right time, rather than only once people reach crisis.
Who is eligible? DisabilityCare Australia will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with everyday activities. This includes people whose disabilities are attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.
Will I lose my current support? No. Your current arrangements will stay in place until you have met DisabilityCare Australia to discuss your needs.
Will it affect my Disability Support Pension? No. Your Disability Support Pension will not be affected.
When does it all begin? DisabilityCare Australia is being rolled out in stages because it is a big change to the current system. Now on display at the Geelong Gallery, the new Impressions of Geelong exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the area’s development through more than 150 years of artistic expression. Running until late next month, the exhibition marks the first time this extensive collection (almost 70 pieces) of rare historical works has been displayed under one roof. From the You Yangs to Queenscliff and the Surf Coast, to the waterfront and Geelong’s streetscapes, few spots are neglected, allowing visitors to trace Geelong’s transformation from post-European settlement to modern city. Rare work from artists such as John Skinner Prout, S.T. Gill and William Duke celebrate the rich landscape that makes the Geelong area unique. But it’s Eugene von Guerard’s famous View of Geelong (1856) that shines as the focal point. Rounding out this fascinating exhibition are a selection of contemporary landscapes, as well as a recently acquired Robert Hoddle watercolour and specially commissioned photographs by John Gollings – both of which are on show for the first time. The eclectic mix of work is sure to inspire locals and visitors to view the diverse Geelong region through fresh eyes, along with a new-found appreciation of the area’s evolution. \ ELIZABETH ANILE

issan Pulsars first hit the market in the late 1970s (they were Datsuns back then) and have always presented robust value. My fave was the N14 between 1990 and 1995, the best Pulsar of the lot. In 2005, Nissan replaced the Pulsar with a comprehensively dreadful thing carrying a name few could pronounce and no one could spell, Tiida. Many people outside the company, and quite a few inside it, thought this was dumb and it only sold on price. Nissan’s share of the small-car market plummeted. The Pulsar’s difference is that it’s good to drive. It rides well and handles acceptably, it cruises nicely in the country and the fuel economy is good. And it’s well made with high structural integrity. This is an easy car to drive and fits like old socks, but when you get thoroughly into the act of driving, it can be highly satisfying, just like the N14. t says a lot about Erin Hoare’s value to the Melbourne Vixens that her only two appearances on court this season were enough for the team’s coach to sing the debutante’s praises. The former St Mary’s local star received the coach’s award from Simone McKinnis last Friday night in another stunning twist to her rising netball career. The honour came after playing just the final 3½ minutes against the Canterbury Tactix in round three and two weeks later scoring 11 goals from 14 attempts in the second half against the Adelaide Thunderbirds as a replacement for returning veteran Sharelle McMahon. For the other 13 matches of the year, there is patience and time to learn from the outside looking in. “You always have that mentality that you could be on court at any stage,” Hoare says. “My real focus this year was maintaining that mentality of being ready to go for possible court time, whether or not I’m going to get on.” A meteoric rise through the ranks has seen the 23-year-old go from shooting in the windy outdoor surrounds of Kardinia Park last year to the pristine conditions under the roof at Hisense Arena in 2013. “It was quite a quick rise in 12 months,”
