niece. “That’s not for children,” says the sales assistant. Just like that my eyes are opened to the most extraordinary publishing phenomenon since Harry Potter. The explosion of colouring-in books for adults started in France with the publication in 2012 of Hachette’s Art-Thérapie: 100 Coloriages Anti-Stress, a collection of mandala-like designs for adult “relaxation support”. Almost simultaneously, across the Channel British artist and illustrator Johanna Basford convinced her publisher to print Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book, with a modest initial run of

“i can still recall …when derwents were like nikes for the under-nines” 13,000 copies. Since then the two books have sold millions of copies worldwide. Colouring-in now has its own aisles in bookshops, with even designers such as Yves Saint Laurent and Hermes getting in on the act. There are adult join-the-dot books and Querkles (elaborate paint-by-numbers books). A Melbourne company called Colourtation produces books it says are clinically proven to provoke meditative alpha waves, zoning-out on filling in geometric patterns. “If you give

ong ago and far away I yearned for a set of Derwent pencils. I can still recall the intensity of my seven-year-old self longing for the pencils of perfection – the first manifestation of brand awareness when Derwents were like Nikes for the under-nines. Of course, it was before pencils became multicultural, rather than coloured. They came in tins of 12, 24, 36 and 72 and, while man had recently walked on the moon, I couldn’t dream big enough for the latter, which seemed hopelessly unobtainable. I nagged, wheedled, pleaded and ultimately struck a deal with my parents. I set about learning my multiplication tables to a point that it must have seemed to my parents that a sharp pencil was better than a dull, leaden times-chanting child and 36 Derwents were mine. Fast-forward to the past week. I pick up a fancy-looking colouring-in book from a bookshop display and wonder aloud whether it’s not too ambitious for my four-year-old

the brain pattern, repetition and order, it has the same effect as salt, fat and sugar – it just loves it,” says Colourtation co-founder and neuroscientist Dr Stan Rodski. I remain unconvinced until I raise the topic with a girlfriend. “I bought one for [my husband] Geoff for Father’s Day. It was a bit of a joke really. When our son was little, Geoff used to ‘help’ colour in his books all the time. He had to hold the pencil a certain way, to shade in a certain direction, it was very serious business.” What was his reaction? “He hasn’t had a chance to have a go yet; I’ve been getting into it, it’s very addictive.” Where will this end, I ask the bookshop owner? “Well, I did have to bite my tongue when someone asked for adults-only colouring pencils the other day,” she says. There’s only one response to this new adult coloured consciousness: 2B or not 2B … that is the question. ● sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

Spring is a busy time for many, especially the milliners whose delicate creations top off the season’s best outfits BY A N N A KOSM A N OVSK I

illiners are spending long hours preparing innovative and often one-off masterpieces. But the time these painstaking creations will spend in the spotlight is short: usually just a day or two at the races. So local milliners (and Millinery Association of Australia members) Sandra Forrester and Leighanne Crocker leapt at the chance to attend last month’s prestigious MAArvelous Millinery. It was an opportunity to show off their new ranges. The annual event draws association members and their work from across the country for a grand display ahead of the launch of the racing carnival. “I think it’s important to support the millinery association events because it really gives us a good platform to present our community to the world,” Leighanne says. “Quite often it’s a great place to start a conversation to get a bespoke order.” Leighanne, who works under the label Day Flower Millinery, says the Australian millinery scene is renowned for its creative flair. “Melbourne is famous for this carnival and Australian milliners are acclaimed for their brilliant design and use of colour,” she says. “The reason for that is we have this fabulous sunny sky … and that makes everything look so vibrant. That’s different in the northern hemisphere.” MAArvelous Millinery is also a reminder of the versatile appeal of headwear. Sandra says milliners also create pieces for theatrical and bridal wear and art exhibitions. In a world of one-offs, bespoke orders are typically milliners’ bread and butter. But many – including locals Rebecca Share and Kim Wiebenga – also offer ready-to-wear ranges. “I try to do as much ready-to-wear stuff as possible, especially for the spring carnival,” Leighanne says. “I haven’t met a lot of my clients. I’ve sent them hats but I’ve never met them. And they go all over the world … I send them to all over Australia, up to Asia, to the US, I’ve sent them to Europe. It’s amazing where they go.” Sandra says it’s rewarding to see her hard work pay off and to spot her designs “bobbing around a racetrack”. She says seeing what was once just a seed of an idea in her mind become a fashionable creation makes all the hard work worthwhile. Sandra is inspired by colour, architectural shapes, nature and flora. Sometimes it will be a particular piece of material or a picture that kicks off the creative process. “Sometimes a certain fabric conjures an idea and quite often an image of a bird or flower gets the creative juices going,” she says.

However there’s a lot of hard work to get to that point. From now until the season slows can be a crazy time for milliners. It’s all hands on deck in the workshop as glorious feats of millinery beauty are brought together, even at the eleventh hour. With such artisan appeal, all hats have a story to tell. Some make a statement through structural design, others speak volumes in their handcrafted attention to detail. All sorts of materials are used: leather, feathers, fabrics, metal and even found objects. Whether the style is classic, pretty or minimalistic, a common factor is the hours and hours of painstaking work, vision and research. Then, once one hat is finished, it’s back to the drawing board for the next one. “I rarely do repeats of any designs,” Leighanne says. “It’s usually only if someone begs me.” She says this helps to give the wearer a strong sense of confidence: “They want to know no one else is wearing it. I think it’s a huge selling point with millinery. If you’re buying something from me, you know that it’s a once-off, that you’re going to be unique. No one else is going to have your look. “That’s, personally, why I wear hats. It’s a personal statement of me. And it’s what I want to put out there.” ● akosmanovski@theweeklyreview.com.au

TRENDS IN HEADWEAR CLASSIC

CLASSIC APPEAL

(SUPPLIED)

Leighanne says classic style has enduring appeal. “If you want to invest in a hat, you’ll definitely get to wear it over and over again if you invest in classic design.” This includes broad-brimmed hats, which are versatile. They can be worn for country racing as well as everywhere else from the beach to a barbecue. “It’s like resort wear and it’s great under our harsh Australian sun,” Leighanne says. “This year, it’s really lovely we’re seeing a lot of headpieces. We haven’t seen a lot of that in years gone by,” Leighanne says. “They’re quite ornate, with lots of gold and lots of leather and lots of metallic. It’s sort of like people are wearing hats that they’d wear for evening, in the day.” Tiara and crown references are a big trend. The nod to royalty can be softened with flowers. “They’re very ornate headpieces in gold wire and beadwork and lots of tulle and leather flowers, that sort of thing,” Leighanne says. “There’s a princess theme going on.’’

While the Geelong Cup is only a few days away, there are plenty of local milliners who can still help out. Keep in mind that some may already be booked for bespoke orders, though. There are ready-to-wear pieces available online. ●

The Geelong Racing Club was founded in March 1865 after a public meeting at the British Hotel. The first Geelong Cup was held in 1872 over a distance of two miles and was won by Flying Scud. In 1903 the racecourse was transferred to its present site at Breakwater Road. The Cup \ 2 0 11 D U N A D EN is run over 2400 metres and is considered one of the key form indicators for the Melbourne Cup. Crisp white looks, a nod to lace and pops of colours are just some of the looks to watch out for in this year’s fashion stakes, say Alex Kearney and Emma Murphy, from fashion styling business Style Duo. “Once again, they’re bringing out a white on white,” Alex says. “Really fresh colours … that was quite big last year and it’s come back again this season.” There’s also a nod to feminine elements. Emma says that means soft pink tones and florals. “Lace is in; lace is going to be big,” she says. The Geelong fashion duo say we can also expect to see plenty of skirt and top combinations. “Doing the same print on print but two-piece separate items will work,” Alex says. Alex and Emma also believe strappy shoes will be the footwear of choice, especially in nude colours. But don’t forget the brights. Alex says yellow, orange and peach are some colours to consider. “Even if you are in that white outfit, do something to make it pop,” she says. It’s also important to choose an outfit that works best for your shape. And enjoy putting it all together. “Part of the fun of the races is getting dressed up and getting ready for them,” Alex says. ●

FUN \ MAKE LIKE A CHAMPAGNE CONNOISSEUR THIS SPRING RACING CARNIVAL t’s all about the bubbles during the Spring Racing Carnival – from marquees to trackside picnics and barbecues with friends on Cup day. There has never I been so much champagne available – some at incredible prices. Here’s our guide to some of the best if you want to lash out. BEN THOMAS ●

Billecart Salmon 2006 (Champagne) $175; 12.5%

96 100

From one of my favourite champagne houses, this just-released wine is in sparkling form. Made from 70 per cent pinot noir, this is a brooding, smoky champagne. Layered and complex, it has floral red berry and cherry flavours plus an immaculate line of lemon acid delivered in a creamy, smooth package. It leaves lengthy, smoky red berry and lemon zest flavours. ●

8 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ OCTOBER 15, 2015

Lanson Black Label NV (Champagne) $48; 12.5%

92 100

Exclusive to Dan Murphy’s, this is complex, with zesty lemon, grapefruit, stonefruit and Salada biscuit aromas. Zippy and saline, it’s smooth in the mouth, crisp and refreshing, with focused acid a highlight of its impressive structure. Its length and intensity is what you expect from a NV champagne and what sets it apart from most local non-vintage sparklings. ●

Jacquesson Cuvee No.738 (Champagne) $95; 12%

94 100

Two-thirds is from the 2010 vintage and the rest is from Jacquesson’s reserve wines. Matured in casks before bottling and its second fermentation, this is a 61/21/18 blend of chardonnay, pinot meunier and pinot noir. There’s a smoky note to the lemon, apple, biscuit and hazelnut aromas. It’s intense and layered with a saline drive to its apple and citrus flavours. ●

Charles Orban Blanc De Blancs NV (Champagne) $50; 12%

92 100

This 100 per cent chardonnay from the estate vineyards of grower-producer Charles Orban in Troissy is a real bargain. Bright stonefruit and lemon zest aromas – along with Salada biscuits – lead to a vigorous mousse, bright chardonnay flavours, minerality and a layer of salinity. It’s focused and linear, with intensity, length and refreshment. ●

Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs 2005 (Champagne) $350; 12%

96 100

“When people speak of Taittinger, they’re talking about this wine,” says Clovis Taittinger. Grapes are sourced from the top five grand crus of the Côte des Blanc. It smells and tastes of brioche, stonefruit and citrus, with star anise in the background. Smooth and satiny, it’s fresh, creamy, and delicious. So composed and structured, but with a load of life. ●

ou have to hand it to the team at Torquay’s 100 The Esplanade – the view is pretty special; panoramic, in fact. The steely-blue expanse of Bass Strait, wind-sculpted dunes and sea-carved ochre cliffs would make fine side orders in any eatery. But impressive as these sights might be, they can’t totally distract from the treatment extended to the squid, camembert, duck ragout, chicken, steaks, fish, pasta and other treats on offer. With tasty tapenades and Moroccan spices, citrus aiolis and Irish whiskey sauces, redcurrant jams, artichoke purees, figs, special pastes, the menu almost has its own picturesque qualities, culinarily speaking that is. International flavours light up a broad but uncluttered menu. Choices are easy – there are five entrees, six mains and four desserts, plus sides. But that doesn’t mean there’s anything mean about the bill of fare; this is a compact, specialist carte du jour. Restaurant general manager Jon Metrikas describes 100 The Esplanade as a “three-hat, five-star restaurant, but for much less”. Its seasonal menu focuses on fresh and local produce, sourced from local suppliers in and around Torquay and the Surf Coast. “We like to support local producers,” John says. “We use bread from Zeally Bay [Sourdough] and Bakers Delight and meat from Torquay’s Surfcoast [Quality Meats], as well as local cheeses and milk.” Deep-fried camembert with bitter leaves and redcurrant jam ($14), salt and pepper squid with lime and chilli aioli ($14) and papadelle pasta with duck ragout and shaved parmesan ($27) are just a few of the favourites on the menu. Equally alluring are spiced chicken breast with warm Moroccan couscous, spiced beetroot and olive tapenade ($29) or chargrilled porterhouse with colcannon potatoes, sauteed brussels sprouts, baby carrots and Irish whiskey sauce ($32). The sweet tooth is ably catered for also, with such surprises as a vanilla bean panna cotta with stewed rhubarb and almond crumbs

Hair to help

argaret Helman remembers a time when the very mention of cancer was thought to be a death sentence. Twenty-seven years ago the Lara grandmother battled and beat ovarian cancer. She not only survived, but her life since has prospered. At the time she had the disease, doctors would have been cautious about holding out hope. Treatments have changed and hope has become more common. And these days Margaret herself provides cancer patients with the next best thing to a medical breakthrough; it comes in the shape of her dab hand at crafting the finest wigs for those who must deal with the stress of losing their hair due to chemotherapy. “When they are really, really down, this is the hardest thing they’ll go through, losing their hair – it’s a woman thing,” Margaret, a former hairdresser, says. “It’s almost like, what else can go wrong? When they come to me, a lot of people are still in denial and they really don’t want to be here.” Cancer patients walk into Margaret’s modest East Geelong wig salon full of trepidation. But that soon changes. Armed with a calming cuppa, a box of tissues and a sympathetic ear, Margaret talks about her own journey, bedridden for months on end and the unforseen debilitating aftermath before an eventual recovery. “You give them a lot of hope when you tell them

you’ve been designing wigs for 27 years after the ovarian cancer that was malignant,” Margaret says. “In those days, it really was almost like a death sentence. But I’m still here and all of sudden when you tell your story, you see a smile on their face.” The 65-year-old tells of seven months of intense chemotherapy in 1988. She had to put her everyday life on hold for more than a year. “The chemo in those days was so different,” she says. “I couldn’t go to work – I couldn’t even get out of bed. “I was vomiting, I was even hallucinating. “Now I see them come into my salon and they usually only have the tiredness and a bit of nausea, but they don’t have the head-in-the-bucket all the time that was so common in my day.” Margaret beat the ovarian cancer. Then she was struck by four years of other illnesses brought on by the chemotherapy. A series of autoimmune diseases, including lupus, hit her hard. They were sparked by an abnormal immune response that led her body to attack its own healthy tissue. Even the simple act of eating could lead to Margaret’s face swelling up, rashes, joint pain and too many middle-of-the-night dashes to hospital. It was a further illness, shingles – and the quiet relief of knowing the cancer hadn’t returned – that

prompted Margaret, then 53, to walk away from her hairdressing salon. “It took me a long time to get over it because shingles is a stress thing and your immune system is low,” she says. “I thought I had to get out of the salon and do a couple of days a week with wigs and enjoy myself.” That’s exactly what she has done. She now runs Margaret Helman Wigs, fitting, trimming, styling and colouring clients’ wigs for free. Her customers include cancer patients and those suffering alopecia (hair loss) or unease about receding hairlines. “I do this as a service, my hobby, something I

Cancer patients being treated at Melbourne’s Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Geelong’s Andrew Love Cancer Centre were sent to Margaret for good-looking wigs that would help lift their self-esteem and regain their dignity. “The biggest mistake people make is buying a wig out of a book or off the internet, because there everything looks beautiful,” Margaret says.

“when they are really down, this is the hardest thing they’ll go through, losing their hair”

really love and it’s a great way to end my career,” Margaret says. Forty years after she first picked up a pair of scissors – at the height of the era of big hair – she has transformed the lives of hundreds of clients. Among them are six men, who have gone home with wigs originally designed for women but cut to suit a man’s hairstyle. Margaret first came across synthetic wigs during the 1980s party costume craze. Hairdressers had to learn fast how to cut them. “They went out as quick they came in, because they were a fashion wig,” she says. But, just three years later, when the harsh chemotherapy made her own hair fall out, it dawned on Margaret how many bad wigs were on the market. “It was just a horrible wig when I look at those photos,” she says of the piece she was offered.

But that won’t help with the reality of head size, face shape, hair texture and different scalps. Most pieces last about a year. For cancer patients that’s enough. Sadly, wigs sometimes outlast clients. That’s why Margaret doesn’t stay in touch with those whose lives she has touched. It’s a deliberate ploy not to get too close. “I don’t even write their last names down,” she says. “I just don’t want to look in the paper and find out they’re no longer here.” But sometimes Margaret is stopped in the street by former clients from years ago who are now unrecognisable. “That’s when I tell them I only remember the bald people,” she says. ● amathieson@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.margarethelmanwigs.jimdo.com

Mind games

Quick thinking pays off for seven youngsters, writes NICOLE MAYNE “They are actually vital skills in life & business”

T

he idea of being locked in a room with a group of people for three hours to solve a complex problem would strike fear in the hearts of many adults. But it’s exactly the kind of challenge a talented group of students from Highton Primary School relishes. The seven-strong team was recently crowned Victorian champion in the Tournament of Minds competition for excelling in exactly this sort of situation. Now the grade 5 and 6 students are preparing to take on some of the brightest young minds from across the nation and beyond at the Australian Pacific finals in Sydney (October 15-17). Highton Primary School team facilitator Janine Quick says it’s a huge achievement, particularly for such a small school. “We have done so well,” she says. “It is many years since a Geelong school has made it into the finals.” The Tournament of Minds competition presents students with two intellectual challenges. The first requires them to work as a team to solve a problem within two minutes. They have another minute to present it. The problem might be represented by something as simple as an image of a man standing in the desert digging a hole. “The judges observe them over two minutes,” Janine says. “They need to observe them working together.” For the second part of the competition at state level, the team was locked in a room with the judges for three hours and had to produce a performance to demonstrate a solution to their given problem. It was designed to test skills such as active

listening, creativity, analytical thinking and co-operative learning. “The skills that they have in teamwork are ones that everyone needs right through life; they are actually vital skills in life and business,” Janine says. “These kids this year have just managed to work that out so well.” Highton selects its team to bring together students with different skills. They train for 12 weeks, giving up lunchtimes and weekends, before the first competition. “Each week you can actually see them grow in confidence,” Janine says. It should stand them in good stead for this month’s international competition. ● nmayne@theweeklyreview.com.au

Denim dresses (consider a shirt style for easy wear) are huge. Try Tencel denim for extra comfort. Khaki is another versatile trend. Black, white and grey are big this season. Go wild with accessories such as scarves, chunky necklaces and belts for splashes of colour. Dresses printed with stripes and plaid offer something different, while there’s a nod to ’70s trends with paisley, knitted dresses, frocks with flared skirts and fringed detail. To make the most use of your dresses, see the versatility in them. Woollen tights and simple black leggings can be worn underneath them, making it easier to face cold spring mornings. Dress them up with heels or take it down a notch with sneakers, jumpers and even baseball hats. For work, it’s amazing what a sleek leather belt and blazer can do to make an office-friendly outfit. Plan some especially comfy outfits for days when you long for jeans or track pants: go casual in a T-shirt style dress or something made of stretch fabric. ●

Courting the stars A GEELONG PHYSIOTHERAPIST IS AT HOME ON CENTRE COURT, WRITES JULIA MILLARD

R

afael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray: physiotherapist Ben Herde has spent time on court with the world’s best tennis players, as well as top Australians Lleyton Hewitt, Sam Groth, Bernard Tomic, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios. Ben, 35, has played a role in major tennis tournaments as an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour physiotherapist. It’s a part-time role that allows him to travel the world for 10 weeks a year. He had previously worked full-time for two years, travelling to tournaments in Europe, Asia, the US, South America, Asia and on home soil in Australia. The Australian Open, Wimbledon (2014) and Madrid Open are some of the bigger tournaments he has worked on. But he says Wimbledon was by far his favourite experience – something he rates as a goosebump assignment. “Wimbledon was a bucket-list [experience]. Like anyone when they start out in their career, there are

obviously things that you strive to do, and for sports physios it would be working at an Olympics or grand slam and Wimbledon being the most prestigious of them all is a surreal feeling,” says Ben, who has been a physiotherapist for 12 years. “The good thing about it was that everyone who was working there was on the same page and knew it was the place to be and were all honoured to be there.” There are 12 ATP World Tour physiotherapists but at most tournaments only two are called up. At grand slams and masters series, though, Ben says there are four physiotherapists on hand. “Often you have the support of local physios as well. So for grand slams you might have three or four local physios, so they really have the support of eight physios.

to give that [ATP World Tour] up and I still have the support of being able to travel.” Ben says the move to Geelong was a seamless fit because he has always been drawn to regional communities. He grew up in Goondiwindi, southern Queensland, where he owned a clinic treating a wide range of clients. “I grew up in a farming community, so regional living always appealed to me and that’s why Geelong was on the radar,” Ben says. “I can work with a varied age spectrum, whether they are developing athletes or people right into their older years needing assistance. “While I have a focus on sport, it’s not necessarily specific to it. Part of that comes from working in a rural community where I had my own clinic and you have to see everyone that walks through the door.”

working on the satellite circuit around Australia at various regional tournaments, but to get some of these more permanent higher-esteem jobs I had to move to Melbourne,” he says. He worked in Melbourne for four years until he got the call-up as an ATP World Tour physiotherapist. He attended an interview in the US for the top-level job. “I had to spend three days with Todd, the boss, and followed him around in his clinic and if nothing else it would have been a good observation and good learning opportunity. He asked me plenty of questions to see if my personality would be compatible for the tour and whether my skill set would be okay. He asked me to do a few things with the patients in his clinic. It was pretty hands-on,” he says.

(MICHELLE KELCEY)

“I worked out early that I wanted to work in sport and with a higher level” The ATP physios do all of the court calls and have a little bit more familiarity with the players … and we do most of the treatments,” he says. This year, Ben has worked on tournaments in Brisbane, Sydney, New Delhi, Portugal and Madrid. This month he will cover tournaments in Beijing, Shanghai, Bangkok and Florida. In between events, he lives in Geelong and has opened a clinic with Corio Bay Health Group at Centre Court Indoor Tennis in North Geelong. “My time is Geelong provides a great opportunity to build the clinic,” Ben says. “I’m in a really good situation at the moment because it’s really well balanced … I like the idea of having my own clinic and engaging in the community. As good as it is travelling and working with these ultra-elite guys, I now have the best of both worlds. With the opportunity of working with Corio Bay, I don’t have

efore the Geelong move, Ben worked in a variety of sports settings in Brisbane, Darwin, Melbourne and Wangaratta. He worked with Northern Territory Rugby League, the Northern Territory AFL team in the North East Australian Football League, Premier League soccer in Brisbane, the Northern Knights for the TAC Cup before the players go into the draft, and the Alice Springs and Gold Coast Masters Games. He originally moved to Melbourne after gaining a position with Tennis Australia. He has also worked in a tennis setting at the Australian Institute of Sport. To top things off, Ben is an Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) Sports Physiotherapist – a title he received from working in a high level of sport mixed with a master’s degree and a two-week live-in at the Australian Institute of Sport. “I initially moved down to Melbourne with the lure of working with the higher level of tennis. I had been

Ben says he knew he wanted to become a physio from a young age because he was playing a lot of sport. But, as he found out, sport is often mixed with injury. “I always played lots of sport and I was always injured. I spent a lot of time in physio clinics,” he says. “I worked out early on that I wanted to work in sport and work with a higher level. And I earmarked tennis early given that it was thriving on the professional circuit … and there was also plenty of opportunity for travel. “I’m marrying up the skill set of being a tennis physio in a tennis location. I’m really trying to capture the tennis market in Geelong but, that being said, I’m not exclusive to tennis players. Also there aren’t too many other physios around this area, so it’s a nice place to be,” he says. ● jmillard@theweeklyreview.com.au » atpworldtour.com

BELMONT \ 17 SCOTT STREET

T

he best in contemporary design is on show at this remarkable three-bedroom house that balances subtlety and indulgence. Clean, sleek lines in rendered grey are all that can be seen of the house from the street. But the intricate details on the front gate and the towering double front doors hint at more to come. Inside, the intriguing mix of sophisticated, minimalist design and pure luxury continues, creating a house that is heavily focused on entertaining. It offers spacious, uncluttered living zones, with plenty of built-in cabinetry taking care of storage needs. The floor plan is unique and takes open-plan living to a new level. The grand entry fans out to the open-plan living zones, with plush carpet underfoot. This area takes up the whole space from that imposing front door to the gas log fire on the back wall, but is divided into two distinct living spaces. The family zone at the front has a television niche, surround sound and built-in cupboards, while the living area at the rear has full-height, tinted, north-facing windows and that double-sided fireplace (its other side is a feature of the backyard). The layout ensures there’s a quiet spot to watch TV, and there’s also the ultimate lounge for living the high life. From here, there’s easy access to the paved backyard and in-ground solar-heated swimming pool. Different ceiling heights add another point of interest to the otherwise clean lines. The centrepiece of the house is the designer kitchen. It has a huge island bench, stone benchtops and sleek, handle-free cabinetry in a mix of white and timber. Once again, there’s a great emphasis on bringing the outside in; the splashback is a window with a view and servery windows behind the sink open to the backyard, making it a breeze to serve cocktails on a hot summer day. The kitchen has stainless-steel appliances and room for seating at the island bench. The bedrooms are off a long hallway behind the open-plan zone, and the main is a vision of extravagance. It opens to the backyard, making an early morning dip an alluring option. There’s also a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish en suite with a double vanity and a double shower. Next door, the main bathroom is just as impressive. It has a walk-in shower and a mirror that spans the height of the room from the vanity to the ceiling. Bronze mosaic feature tiles in the bathrooms add an earthy yet elaborate touch. The second and third bedrooms have built-in cabinetry – in the same, sleek design seen elsewhere – and long, low windows. Laundries rarely warrant much of a mention but the one in this house does. From the stone benchtop to the custom cabinetry that hides the appliances, it’s a clever space. It also has access to the four-car garage and workshop. There is split-system heating and cooling throughout, as well as a security alarm and monitoring system. The location in leafy, inner-city Newtown, within walking distance of the Barwon River, Shannon Avenue, Pakington Street and the CBD, is the icing on a very sleek and stylish cake. ● SARAH BIESKE property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Space is never compromised at this impressive weatherboard on a huge block. The renovation and extension hasn’t changed the remarkably spacious backyard, with the block measuring about 734 square metres. A bricked path leads to the front porch, and inside you step into a large entrance hall with polished timber floors and high ceilings. The main bedroom to the right is large and opens to a walk-in wardrobe and en suite on one side, and a front deck on the other. The second and third bedrooms are also in the original front half of the house and include built-in wardrobes, while a home office at the rear could be a fourth bedroom. A contemporary open-plan zone includes a sleek kitchen that overlooks the spacious meals and living areas, and opens to a large covered deck. There’s another bathroom off the kitchen with a shower, toilet and laundry. With rear access as well as a front carport, you can walk to the High Street shops and Highton Village and leave the car at home. ● SARAH BIESKE

It might be almost 100 years old, but this weatherboard beauty has still got it. Tastefully updated and extended over the years, it provides glimpses of its past while accommodating contemporary needs. Just blocks from the bay, the four-bedroom house would suit families in search of a lifestyle change. A hedge and established front garden make for a welcoming entrance, while period accents steal your attention once inside – especially the original stained-glass windows. There are two bedrooms at the front of the house, including the spacious main with a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The third bedroom is further along a wide hallway. Upstairs and with a view of the backyard, the fourth bedroom is a great teenager’s retreat. There’s a large open-plan living area at the back of the house, with a well-appointed kitchen, dining space and living zone with timber floors. There’s also a carpeted formal lounge with fireplace and a sitting room. Just a short walk to the waterfront and CBD, this historic house is all about living the good life. ● SARAH BIESKE

Outdoor living is taken seriously at this contemporary house. A huge back deck is the perfect spot for any gathering. It has pull-down blinds and overhead heaters for the ultimate in comfort. Guests might also like to gather around the fire pit in the garden. Inside, the two living areas are at the back of the house, maximising their connection with the rear yard. The open-plan kitchen, meals and living room has tiled flooring. Next door is a cosy carpeted lounge ideal for watching television. A gas log fire is the centrepiece of the main living room – recycled timber has been used to craft the mantelpiece and surrounding shelves. The galley kitchen has ample bench space and a walk-in pantry. There are also stone benchtops, a 900-millimetre stove and a glass splashback. Families with young children will appreciate the grouping of the three bedrooms together towards the front. The spacious main bedroom has plantation shutters, a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite. Other features include central heating and evaporative cooling. ● NICOLE MAYNE

HIGHTON \ 11 MANOR CRESCENT There’s a bit of Hollywood Hills about this sprawling house. Built high in Highton’s hills just above Queens Park and the Barwon River, the split-level residence shows off stunning 1980s architecture and light-filled living zones. The four-bedroom house was made for entertaining, with the floor plan designed to make the most of the location. At the front of the house is a tranquil formal lounge with an open fireplace, and floor-to-ceiling windows capturing the greenery outside. There’s also a dining area in this wing, just off the entrance, while the main meals and living areas are part of a central open-plan zone that also includes the impressive kitchen. You’ve got plenty of options when it comes to entertaining, with the meals area opening to a north-facing in-ground swimming pool, and the living area opening to a large, partly covered deck, built among the trees. It’s a private oasis and makes it hard to believe you’re just a short drive from Geelong’s CBD. The main bedroom is at the back of the house and has an en suite and built-in wardrobes. The second and third bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and are close to the main bathroom. The fourth bedroom is in the front half of the house with a nearby powder room. It would also make a great home office. ● SARAH BIESKE

48 TRIGG STREET, GEELONG WEST

A strong opening bid of $460,000 from a buyer’s advocate at 48 Trigg Street, Geelong West, on Saturday appeared to knock the stuffing out of any prospective opponents. Jarrod Leonard (Buxton Geelong East) was met with silence, so he went inside the four-bedroom weatherboard to seek instructions. He returned and the 40 onlookers saw another bidder push the mark to $465,000. It was quickly batted back by the buyer’s advocate with $470,000. So it went until Jarrod declared the property on the market at $495,000. The action went a little further and at $506,000 the hammer came down in favour of the buyer’s advocate, who had won the property

79 BALLIANG STREET, SOUTH GEELONG

on behalf of an excited young couple who moved to Geelong from Melbourne eight months ago. A big, friendly dog made the first move at 79 Balliang Street, South Geelong, where Jason Barnett (Professionals Barnett) had just told the crowd of 35 about the possibilities of the two-bedroom Victorian cottage. The dog produced a positive bark right on cue. “I’m tempted to take it,’’ Jason said. “But perhaps someone other than the dog can start us off.’’ A bid of $390,000 emerged and seven bids later, after a three-way contest, the property was knocked down for $437,000 to a young local man who intends to live there.

MARKET NEWS \ AUCTIONS ATTRACT EVERYONE AND THEIR DOG

14 BELCHER STREET, HAMLYN HEIGHTS

83 REIGATE ROAD, HIGHTON

Thirty people gathered outside 14 Belcher Street, Hamlyn Heights, as Joe Grgic (Harcourts North Geelong) put the two-bedroom weatherboard on a block of 766 square metres up for auction. A loud call of $300,000 was quick to emerge. “That’s a start,’’ Joe said. “I don’t think it will buy it, but thank you, sir.’’ It soon became a contest between a man and a young woman, who was conferring with a third party by phone. In the end the man, a local developer, won the day at $395,000. The sun was beating down when Sean O’Brien (Ray White Highton) faced a crowd of 40 outside 83 Reigate Road, Highton, an updated three-bedroom house.

Bidding opened at $430,000 and the property was on the market at $460,000. “The sold sticker will be going on the board, get excited,’’ Sean said. A local woman was soon the most excited among the crowd, taking the prize at $470,000. She plans to live at the property. Marcus Falconer (Hodges) guided the action at 289 Pakington Street, Newtown, a fascinating slice of Geelong’s history. Forty-five people watched as the three-bedroom house was offered for sale for the first time since 1888. It sold under the hammer to a local man for $574,000. The new owner plans to renovate the house. ●
