Likewise by leather seating, dining carts, wood panelling, sliding-door compartments, brass fixtures. Throw in the odd wooden trestle bridge, some ferns and eucalypts and you had all the makings of the quintessential Aussie sentimental journey. Railway stations such as Geelong even had bars with a ready beer for the thirsty sojourner. Trains aren’t always such happy affairs these days, especially for the commuter. Arrival times all over the place, cancellations, buses instead of trains caught up in the gridlock on all roads leading to Melbourne, people driving from Geelong to Werribee to catch metro trains. Stories of frustration daily. But my young bloke and I recently rediscovered the joy of trains – model trains, that is, and they’re much more sophisticated than I recall – at a mate’s place in Geelong West. Ripper locos whipping through stations and tunnels, across bridges and fields, rattling, chugging, shunting and wheezing. Digitally operated, all very slick. Whimsical figures about the stations, too, couples arguing, drunks staggering. Regrettably, though, no explosives. Pity that because Gomez was why my mates and I liked trains, train sets, train-spotting, train bridges, train gates and gatehouses. Why we mangled coins by putting them on train lines, how we listened for approaching trains Indian-like with our ears to the rail. Did you

emember Gomez Addams, cigar chomped between his teeth, his hands plunging a dynamite detonator to blow up his model train set? Two locos steaming headlong towards each other and kaboom! Up they’d go in a cloud of explosive smoke with Gomez grinning madly, eyes popping and moustache twitching at the success of his destructive enterprise. I reckon he crystallised a couple of generations of kids’ interest in trains. Red rattlers, locos, diesels, B, K and T classes, Harris and Tait engines, steam engines blasting thick black smoke. Was a time when they all rumbled past my house. Hearing them was almost like listening to the sea. Reassuring, steadying, even relaxing. The irrepressible, blithely wealthy Gomez, in his pinstripe suit, helped trains assume a romantic aspect for this traveller. This was bolstered by country carriages adorned with photos of Hepburn Springs, Mount Buffalo, Healesville, the Dandenongs and other tourist destinations around Victoria.

know B62 was the first train to travel two million miles in Australia? Yeah, okay, we might have been a bit obsessed. But that doesn’t discount standing on a station platform as the Geelong Flyer hurtled through like a metallic hurricane. The fact people were sitting inside, reading The Herald, or maybe sleeping, seemed staggering. Which is why I was chuffed to find my kid’s
interest piqued by the new breed of miniature trains. Gomez’s influence has propelled me on some extraordinary train trips: Kuranda, Walhalla, Puffing Billy, the Indian Pacific, Orient Express and Flying Scotsman, France’s TGV, Peru’s Sacred Valley, cogwheels up Rio’s Tijuca, and the Swiss Alps. He might grow to suffer the same happy affliction. It’s sad that Gomez’s influence has been waning. Fortunately Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express, The Polar Express, the Wild Wild West and shows such as Thomas the Tank Engine have kept trains in the consciousness of the contemporary litter of kids. Here’s hoping the digitally operated, heavy-metal model trains about these days not only ensure big kids retain a place on the platform but also lure a few more youngsters to the diversions of hissing boilers, grinding wheels and rods, squealing brakes, purring valves and shrieking whistles. Who knows, maybe they could assume Gomez’s mantle and one day land a gig as transport minister. He certainly knew how to clear a gridlock. ● nmurphy@theweeklyreview.com.au www.facebook.com/ theweeklyreviewgreatergeelong @twrgeelong

The project won Andrew Denton’s prestigious writing grant, the Kit Denton Disfellowship, and the pair ran a Pozible crowdfunding campaign to create the online series.

ix months after the birth of her first baby, comedian Kate McLennan wouldn’t mind a minute to stop and bask in the glow of motherhood. Instead the Geelong-raised performer is busy trying to remember to pack a breast milk pump as she busily promotes the second series of her hit comedy The Katering Show Show. The unconventional series, billed as the journey of a food intolerant and an intolerable foodie, proved a web sensation when it was released on YouTube last year. At last count the satirical send-up of foodie culture was about 100,000 hits short of reaching the five-million-views mark. On the back of international interest, the ABC has commissioned a second series, which is screening online on iview from April 15. The success of The Katering Show follows five years of hard work by Kate and her co-creator and friend Kate McCartney. It just so happens to have also come at a time when both of them became first-time mums. Kate says she has had to call in a few favours from her family, including dragging her mum up the highway from Geelong to Melbourne two days a week to care for baby daughter Dusty, to chase her long-term dream. “We have worked for so many years for this point and it just happens that the success of The Katering Show came at the same time that both of us were starting families,” Kate says. Kate always dreamed of being on television – as a young child growing up in Mortlake and then Geelong, where she moved when she was 10. “I was obsessed with Australian TV when I was a kid, I always watched Neighbours and
my next meal, whereas she has no interest in food.” The show plays around with that relationship and road tests many culinary trends such as the Thermomix and quitting sugar. The second series tackles their obsession with ramen, pop-up restaurants and all things paleo. “This series explores the relationship between McCartney and me and it delves a little more into our personal lives,” Kate says. Kate says producer Tamasin Simpkin was amazing at negotiating the filming schedule of two women who had just had babies. “There is a lot of breast-pumping in the

A QUICK CHAT WITH … SCOTT AUSTIN
About Scott
Scott Austin, managing director of Austins & Co, is also vice president of the Geelong Winegrowers’ Association.
My vision is … to become Australia’s leading producer of cool climate wines, showcasing the Geelong region for its world class quality.
A typical working day for me is … I don’t have a typical day. I can be in the office, on the road with the sales team, in the vineyard or winery with the winemaking team … then there’s the cellar door weekends where I host masterclasses.
Wine from Geelong and the wider region … punches well above its weight and is a hidden gem on the international stage … not for long!
I love my job because … wine brings people together. It opens conversations, enhances experiences and has given me the opportunity to travel and meet people from all walks of life. The most challenging part of my job is … building brand awareness in an overcrowded marketplace. Fortunately Geelong businesses are parochial and supportive of local producers. Austins & Co was started in … 1982 by my parents Richard and Pamela. I am very lucky to have been afforded this opportunity to take over as the second generation and hope to offer the same to our children. Our wine is available locally through … many very supportive local businesses in the retail and restaurant trade. Too many to name but we love them all. Our wine is now exported to China and the US. There is an insatiable appetite for Australian wine and, in particular,

the cool climate styles we produce is this region. It’s an exciting time to be involved and telling our story to the world. We are best known for … consistently producing great value wines. We are particularly well known and liked for our 6Ft6 range.
My favourite memory of working in the wine industry has been … most recently, being listed on (British celebrity chef) Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck wine list in the UK and then with our 2015 riesling at his Fat Duck restaurant at Crown – an honour and very rewarding. The best place to go for a bite to eat/drink/coffee in Geelong is … my wife and I love King of the Castle for a coffee/breakfast. Little Creatures is a really cool venue with a great crew.
The 2016 harvest has been … full of surprises. Most are but this one was super early, delivering remarkable fruit for such a dry year.
The person who has had the biggest influence on my life is … mum for her tenacity and work ethic and dad for the values of being bold and venturesome in his approach to business.
The highlight of my career has been … launching the re-brand of the 6Ft6 and Austins & Co range of wines, and achieving national distribution. It has been a goal to sell all our wine (20,000 cases a year) under our own brands and I am proud to say that our team has accomplished that in the past year.
When I’m not working you will find me … supporting the Cats, sailing or fishing on our magnificent bay, holidaying in Lorne or just hanging out with family – wife Belle, children Spencer (two-and-a-half years) and Delilah (8 months) and Bella our greyhound. ● With JESSICA GABITES

ast year was a high-water mark for women’s sport. The Diamonds took out the Netball World Cup. Cricket’s Southern Stars, who were the reigning World Cup and Twenty20 champions, solidified their place in the firmament by bringing home the Ashes. The Matildas became the first Australian football team – male or female – to ever win a knockout match at a World Cup. The Weekly Review speaks to four talented local women who are aiming for the top in their chosen sports, pushing through adversity and striving for equal attention to the men. Structural changes have been implemented to help women compete to the best of their ability, from increased earnings in some cases (most female athletes still need to supplement their income with another job) to changes in parental policy for cricketers. Last week, Cricket Australia took the lead on these issues when it announced it would almost double its commitment to Australia’s elite female players from $2.36 million to $4.23 million. Many of the Southern Stars players will effectively earn more than $100,000 a year along with improved travel and accommodation benefits, restrictions on training times to support work and study commitments and changes to policies on sponsorships and pregnancy. Still, there is more to be done by other sporting bodies. In this Olympic year, Australia’s female athletes are deserving of support and attention – and their winning pedigree is synonymous with quality viewing. Here is what they have to say, and here’s to 2016. ●

jumper in the AFL women’s exhibition match held in early March, as well as playing for the women’s Victorian AFL team, are just a couple of highlights for the young midfielder. “There’s nothing like playing footy with the girls,” Maddie says. “We go just as hard as men. The girls don’t hold back.” Playing football with the boys and kicking the footy around with her dad has been the origin of her passion for the sport. And she’s no rookie. Maddie has been best-on-ground in a grand final and also in the youth girls’ competition and best-on-field at North Geelong Women’s Football club twice. She has represented Victoria in under-18s at youth girls’ level and under-21s. “I love it. It’s not like any other sport,” she says. While studying physical education teaching at university, Maddie is training with an academy to prepare herself to play in the national league, hopefully starting next year. “I’m so excited about this new challenge and opportunity. To prove to myself that I can be a real AFL player, I really need to work hard. “You could just bludge through and not get anything out of it. Or you can soak it all up and commit.” The academy ran for five months and ended in March with a series of interstate games. “When we see a pathway for a national league, there’s more purpose behind the opportunities,” she says. “And Victoria is the pinnacle of women’s footy … just kick the footy and give it a go.” ●

spanning 20 years, she isn’t just paving the way for women in sport, she’s breaking down stereotypes. “Women only make up about 20 per cent of the golf population, but there are lots more opportunities than 20 years ago,” Vicky says. The youngest of five grew up in Colac and started playing golf with her family when she was 11. She trained for three years at the Victorian Institute of Sport, made the state team in 1999 and the Australian team in 2002. She spent 10 years touring with the Ladies European Tour and the Australian Ladies Golf Tour and played in the team that won the 2002 Women’s World Cup of Golf in Malaysia. “We were only the second Australian team to win it. It was just the girls and four days of golf, and my score counted as the countback score, which was pretty amazing,” Vicky says. “I played eight solid years, which was intense, frustrating. The highs were good and the lows were ordinary.” Golf, as Vicky describes it, is a great social leveller. “Millionaires can buy anything, but they can’t buy golfing talent, and they envy you for that.” A career in golf is full of great opportunities, travel and new people, but it’s not easy. “It is an individual sport and it is quite time-consuming if you want to get good at it. It’s an all-day thing, which often isn’t appealing,” she says. But all the hard work has its positives. “I’ve played with people like [former PM] Bob Hawke and [NRL legend] Andrew Johns, who are such Aussie icons. “I had dinner with the fourth billionaire of Australia just last night … if I didn’t play golf things like that wouldn’t happen,” she says. ●
The girl from St Leonards started playing with the Bluebells – the under-9s netball team coached by her mum. She now plays at national level and was signed to the Melbourne Vixens in 2014. But netball success didn’t just fall into her lap. While studying VCE, Emily was travelling to Melbourne and surrounding areas to play and train several times a week. “In Geelong we have to go to Melbourne to further our careers. Your support ground is what makes it possible, just give everything a go,” she says. The game most Australian girls spent their childhoods playing has been around since 1901, but it still continues to develop and change. “It was only in 2007 that the Vixens began and it’s something to be proud of, because we’ve come so far in the sport,” the young star says. “When I was younger we couldn’t watch netball on TV, or follow our favourite players on social media.” Despite the lack of media coverage when Emily was growing up, she still looked up to Bianca Chatfield. “I felt like such a little kid playing with her,” Emily says. “In my first game with the Vixens I copped a ball straight to my face in the warm-up.” Travelling to Melbourne five days a week – and six when the season starts – is a small price to pay for someone as passionate about netball as Emily. “Women just have to keep putting themselves out there and strive for the best. We still have a long way to go,” she says. “It was always a dream. I just went with the flow and everything fell into place.” ●

aura Spiranovic is deservedly stepping out of her L“It’s brother Matthew’s Socceroo spotlight and into her own. about doing something you love,” Laura says. “I look up to my brother. You see the injuries first-hand … but through his success you see what you get when you work hard,” the Melbourne Victory striker says. She spent years being driven to Melbourne by her parents to train and play. Now she travels between Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne, working hard for what she wants and it’s definitely paying off. “It’s about finding that balance between time management and the right support network around you. But lots of female athletes are in the same spot.”
But the opportunities for soccer in Geelong aren’t exactly bursting at the seams. “Soccer brought my father from Tassie to Geelong,” she says. “Lots of Geelong girls don’t have the opportunity in Geelong. My sister and I had to train in Melbourne. It’s difficult.” Sport is something Laura has always been passionate about. She has been studying for her Bachelor of Education in Ballarat and hopes to eventually become a physical education teacher. “With women’s sport you need a back-up,” she says. “Unfortunately women don’t get the same opportunity as men, but we can’t compare ourselves. We have to create our own identity.”
With such a large commitment to soccer, finding the balance between friends and family usually comes at a price, such as missing special occasions. “You just have to give it your all, and you’ll continue to grow,” Laura says. ●

But another local product is becoming very popular. “One of our other beers is called Furphy, which is a beer only made in Geelong and only sold in Victoria and made from 100 per cent Victorian ingredients,” he says. “That was a real product for us to give back to Geelong for embracing us so well. It is developing a cult-like following; we just can’t make it quickly enough.” The brewery caters for a cross-section of people from 20-somethings to young families and those of all ages celebrating milestones. As the brewery prepares to celebrate its third birthday in August, it is also enjoying another milestone – having welcomed more than half a million people through its doors. As capacity in Fremantle grew tight and demand on the eastern seaboard increased, Little Creatures looked for a site for a new brewery. Enter Geelong. THE FRESH FOOD MERCHANT 138 Malop Street, Geelong
(REG RYAN)
o visit to a European market is complete without the ritual of a quick coffee stop. The same can be said of a trip to Geelong’s inner-city marketplace, the Fresh Food Merchant. A slick new espresso bar selling Coffee Supreme is an integral part of the vision of owners Lisa and Ash Corica for their modern take on a continental-inspired food hall. It’s no coincidence that the clean lines of the concrete coffee counter are the first thing customers encounter when they step inside the recently renovated grocer in Malop Street. For this young Geelong couple, it signals that shopping here is about more than just hastily shoving a few apples and oranges in a basket. Instead it’s designed to be an experience, a chance to sip espresso or a flat white while chatting to staff about the latest cheese offering. “Coffee is an important part of any meal,” Ash says. “The Europeans always have a short black or an espresso at the end of a meal, even in the evening. In the mornings you will see the Romans reading the sports while having a coffee. “It’s such an important part of food. That is why we have got the espresso bar.” Lisa and Ash were born and bred in Geelong but have spent a lot of time travelling in Europe. It was here, particularly in northern Europe, that they came to appreciate the way regional markets showcased produce from the area. Lisa, an accountant, and Ash, a former operations manager, spent months researching what was in their own backyard before opening the Fresh Food Merchant. This included casting a wide net for a specialty coffee roaster to supply beans for their espresso bar. As confessed newcomers to the coffee game – they knew little about it, apart from being avid consumers – they found their perfect partner in Melbourne roaster Coffee Supreme. They opted for the balance of the roastery’s signature blend, Supreme. It’s a mix of four

beans, primarily from Central America, and comes with a sweet, caramel finish. “I think with coffee it has got to be an all-rounder,” Ash says. “There are lots of niche coffees. “For us, it is important that every day the consistency of the coffee is the same … we found that Coffee Supreme was consistent everywhere we drank it. It was always great.” He says not many people are aware that Coffee Supreme is one of the few roasters to source its own green beans. It sells them on to others in the industry. There are obvious parallels between the company’s direct relationships with farmers in Central America and the effort Lisa and Ash have put into dealing with their suppliers. The final piece of the puzzle fell into place when barista Jacqui Stacey applied to work

10 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ APRIL 14, 2016
It’s time to celebrate those ugly, yet tasty, fruit and vegies we throw to the side in our quest for perfection. On Friday, April 29, Little Green Corner will host a five-course feast of “wonky plants” and sustainable seafood. Tickets are sold out but you can still pop along to Little Green Corner and ask for the “give a fork” specials, including an autumn salad with roast pumpkin, beetroot, Jerusalem artichoke, kale and almond and wild fennel seed dukkah ($17). Part of the proceeds will god to the Sustainable Table’s food education and awareness program. ■ Little Green Corner, 42 Little Ryrie Street, Geelong. 5273 0229

But, despite the long hours, the couple are excited to be creating something different in the heart of Geelong and reinventing the market hall that once occupied an 1890s building. “We feel like Geelong is at a turning point, at a point in time where some great things can happen in the CBD and we wanted to get in at that stage and get involved,” Ash says. ● NICOLE MAYNE

Volunteers Maureen Armstrong and Lesley Christie were the two women behind the thousands of scones baked. Lesley says she and Maureen worked with just one oven in the historic home to bake thousands of scones. They also added jam and cream, while other volunteers took orders, made tea and coffee and served the scones. “We were trying to get as many scones out as we could,” Lesley says. “It was just a job that had to be done and it’s better to have home-made than to buy it in. On just one
day, about 1000 people came through the exhibition and I made 295 scones.” Lesley, who used to own a food business in Winchelsea, has been volunteering at Barwon Park Mansion for 17 months. She will continue to volunteer every Sunday. Trudi says it was an amazing effort by the two women and more than 120 volunteers registered with the National Trust for the exhibition. “There was a large number of volunteers helping to serve the scones, in addition to

hile more than 22,000 people flocked to see the stunning costume exhibition from The Dressmaker at Winchelsea’s Barwon Park Mansion, it was the aromas from the kitchen out the back that enticed many of them to stay a little longer. During the exhibition from December 11 to March 20, fans of fine needlework and the box office hit comedy-drama ordered more than 8200 scones topped with jam and cream. National Trust property manager Trudi Toyne said the most popular refreshment enjoyed in the shade of the grand verandah was the Devonshire tea. “I think the Devonshire tea was popular because it’s something that is not really available any more. the women baking them,” Trudi says. “Part of the proceeds from the exhibition will go towards continual improvements to Barwon Park Mansion.” Only two families, the Austins and the Batsons, owned the property before it was left to the National Trust of Australia (Victoria). The 42-room bluestone mansion was built for Thomas and Elizabeth Austin, who lived at the property after their marriage in 1845. Trudi says visitors can expect to see a grand entrance hall, central staircase and wrought-iron verandahs overlooking the expansive pastoral areas and many more historic features when visiting. “We will now be putting on Devonshire tea and other sweet options as an addition to visiting Barwon Park,” Trudi says. “Barwon Park is one of the grandest mansions in the Western District and in Victoria. Music lovers gathered at Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Grovedale for a full day of music, art and culture. About 200 visitors soaked up the atmosphere on picnic rugs and camp chairs at the second edition of Narana Unplugged on Saturday, April 9. They listened to music by Yirrmal, Josh Seymour, Jayden Lillyst, Alister Turrill, Olly Friend, Deadly Duo and Lyndon Arthur Perry on the Boomerang Stage. Guests also explored the native bush and walkways and visited the resident emus and wallabies. They toured the cultural display and performance building, art gallery and shop, which were open all day. Cafe Narana served up its famous kangaroo sliders and other tasty delights, as well as Seven Seeds coffee. Organisers say the inaugural Narana Unplugged, held last April, reacquainted audiences with Narana as a unique, organic and immersive music, arts and cultural destination for the Geelong community. ●

T
here was no movement from the crowd of 50 outside 151 Verner Street, Geelong, on Saturday, and the stylishly renovated four-bedroom house passed in off a vendor bid of $700,000. But Jeff Begg (Hodges) then concluded a deal that landed the vendor $795,000; a pair of local first home buyers speedily jumped in to snap up the property post-auction. That done, the happy vendor trotted a few blocks north to 9 Sydney Avenue, Geelong, where 60 onlookers had gathered outside the three-bedroom Victorian weatherboard house. Jason Barnett (Professionals Barnett) was enthusiastic about the location and the house. “The potential is as much as you want to

make it in this location,” Jason said, before accepting an opening bid of $500,000. What followed was a keen four-way contest, with the happy vendor from Verner Street outlasting the opposition and landing his new project at $675,000. A project of another sort was on the cards after Adam Natonewski (Ray White Highton) sold 3 Rotherham Street, Belmont, under the hammer. “It’s a conite castle in original condition,” Adam told the crowd of 40. An opening bid of $290,000 kickstarted a brisk five-way battle for the tired three-bedroom house on more than 720 square metres. Adam declared the property on the

market at $322,000 and the bids kept coming. At $353,000 it was over, the hammer coming down in favour of a developer who has moved to Geelong from Melbourne and is establishing projects. Andy Ingham (Buxton Newtown) was getting no response from the 35 onlookers outside the rear access to 159 Autumn Street, Geelong West, after talking up the renovated, three-bedroom character weatherboard house. “You can’t have come out at two o’clock on a Saturday to see me,” Andy said. Soon enough, he had an opening bid of $450,000, sparking an entertaining contest. Three parties took the mark to $550,000, at which point a new bidder offered
$560,000. That seemed to knock the stuffing out of the competition. “He’s got the keys in his pocket, they’re heading off to Pako for a skinny latte,” Andy said. He was right. He brought the hammer down at that figure and a young local couple had just bought their first home. It was a lower-key affair at 226 Roslyn Road, Highton, where Kieron Hunter (Barry Plant South Barwon) told the 20 onlookers that the location, close to Highton Village, was second to none. Two parties vied for the five-bedroom brick house on more than 1000 square metres, with offers starting at $450,000. The hammer came down at $495,000 in favour of a local couple. ● PAUL CHAPPLE

f you’re in the market for a slice of rural extravagance, this impressive homestead ticks all the boxes. It has a long list of luxury inclusions with one common thread – this is a house for those who love to entertain. Inspired by Barwon Grange, an early Victorian villa on the Barwon River in Newtown, this four-bedroom house has a timeless appeal. Built just eight years ago, it re-creates the period beauty of its predecessor, from feature gables to stunning return verandah. A striking sandstone exterior is complemented by a bluestone base, with bluestone steps to the front entrance. Inside, however, it’s all modern design. The property takes up 1.29 hectares atop the Lovely Banks hill. Its entrance is as grand as they come, with automated gates and a circular driveway. From the verandah, visitors can take in the spectacular outlook, which spans from Simonds Stadium to Corio Bay and the You Yangs; you might feel like a king looking down on your kingdom. The views are an integral part of the house. There are 60 squares of living space here but, despite the vast size, the house is not overwhelming. That’s partly due to the clever layout but also because of the warm finishes, including polished spotted gum floors and off-white walls. The north wing is devoted to relaxed living spaces. Through sliding doors off the entrance hall is a family room with a bay window capturing the water views. There’s also a dining area here and a French provincial-inspired kitchen, with stone benchtops, an island bench, quality appliances and a large walk-in pantry. Just off the meals area is the house’s piece de resistance – a remarkable indoor-outdoor entertainment room. With a timber-lined vaulted ceiling, gas log fire, built-in barbecue and bifold doors opening it all up to the verandah, it’s the perfect place to show off the breathtaking landscape. To the left of the entrance hall is a formal lounge with gas log fireplace and another bay window, making this a great room for taking in the vista. You could sit here for hours just watching the world go by. The bedrooms are on the south side of the house. The spacious main enjoys the bay outlook, as well as a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with double vanity. There are three more bedrooms, one with a walk-in wardrobe and the others with built-in wardrobes. A study behind double doors is big enough to be a fifth bedroom if required. The main bathroom is central to the bedrooms. There’s also a shower room in the laundry, along with plenty of storage. Kids will love the huge rumpus room at the back of the house. It opens to a large pergola and a backyard that will make you dream of long summer days. There’s a heated saltwater, in-ground swimming pool, a tennis court and lush lawn surrounded by manicured gardens. A paddock behind the tennis court is big enough for some livestock. The three-car garage with internal access is the icing on a considerable cake. Beautifully maintained and thoughtfully designed, this is an impressive house that offers a life of peace and quiet without sacrificing the convenience of city life. ● SARAH BIESKE property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Size and style are in abundance at this family house. Beautiful inside and out, it offers a great lifestyle location that’s just 10 minutes from Ocean Grove’s beaches and central Geelong. An elegant renovation of white walls and wide open spaces has given the quality-built house a fresh start. An open-plan layout creates an easy flow between living spaces. On one side of the central kitchen, meals and living area is a carpeted formal lounge, while on the other is a huge rumpus room, a great space for the kids to play. The main bedroom at the front of the house has built-in mirrored wardrobes and an en suite. Three further bedrooms are at the back of the house; the fifth bedroom is upstairs and has views to Corio Bay. One of the biggest surprises is the size of this corner block, which measures about 1130 square metres. There’s a large covered deck out the back, plenty of grass, a cubby, play equipment and a private paved patio that is a great spot for a quiet morning coffee. ● SARAH BIESKE

Unless you’re a Belmont local, you’ve probably never heard of East View Parade. It’s quite remarkable how this tree-lined street has managed to keep its anonymity because it has to be one of the best spots in Geelong. Located in Belmont’s exclusive river precinct, this three-bedroom house has stunning views that stretch across to the city, as well as complete privacy. Its retro charm immediately appeals but it’s the idyllic river panorama that makes you truly appreciate how special this property is. A large north-facing balcony allows you to feel a part of the landscape. The bones of the house are solid and provide scope to renovate and turn it into a dream family home. The possibilities are endless. As it stands, most of the living is on the main floor of the home – that includes the bedrooms and bathroom. Downstairs is a rumpus room and office space, and there’s access to storage under the house. From here, you can walk to High Street, walking tracks and the bottom end of Pakington Street. ● SARAH BIESKE

Families will love the space and privacy on offer at this substantial four-bedroom brick house. The location gets a tick, too, with the Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre nearby and Torquay a short drive away. New residents can spread out in two spacious living zones, a dining room and a kitchen, with plenty of room to store and create. Natural light streams in through the large windows, and timber blinds and floorboards are a modern touch. Both bathrooms have been updated. Families need lots of storage options and you’ll find them in the hallway, along with a row of cupboards in the laundry. Head to the backyard for a dip in the pool, then relax on the deck. Those with hungry tummies can make their way to the covered entertainment area to refuel in the shade. The garden is low on maintenance, so new residents will be able to spend more time relaxing with their family. Little ones and pets can run around in the enclosed yard at the rear. There’s room for a cubby and trampoline, too. ● REBECCA THOMPSON
City living looks pretty appealing from the balcony of this penthouse apartment. With views across Geelong’s CBD and Corio Bay, the spectacular outlook is one of which you’ll never tire. The two-bedroom apartment is one of 12 in this boutique development in the heart of the city. The white colour palette leaves room for its new owner to add their own bursts of colour, and timber flooring adds just the right amount of warmth. The kitchen, meals and living area is a great open-plan space with floor-to-ceiling windows and a large slider to an expansive balcony. The kitchen includes stone benchtops, stainless-steel appliances and an island bench, with a nearby glass door allowing you to enjoy the bay view even when you’re whipping up a meal. The main bedroom includes a wall of built-in wardrobes and an en suite. The main bathroom serves as an en suite to the second bedroom, which also has built-in wardrobes. A single-car garage space with remote-control access is part of the package. ● SARAH BIESKE
