allipoli’s sacrifices, its victims and heroes, plus the many Australians fallen in battle or its aftermath since, are about to be honoured in Anzac Day ceremonies. It’s fair to say that as the largest of these outside of Melbourne unfolds in the morning dark at Torquay, few people will be thinking of a Japanese pilot named Nobuo Fujita and the unusual role he played in World War II and after. But if Jacka and Monash, the Kokoda and Long Tan battlers, our VC winners, PoWs, forgotten Ambon fighters, PTSD sufferers, support corps, the exhaustive catalogue of Australians involved in war, have one thing in common, it’s possibly something similar to the antipathy Nobuo Fujita felt about war. His story surprises most people I tell it to. On February 26, 1942, Fujita flew a Japanese scout plane across Torquay with Shoji Okuda. The pair set off from a submarine near King Island in Bass Strait. Fujita’s mission was to recce over Melbourne. They set out for Cape Otway two hours before dawn, following the coast to Torquay
then banking towards Portarlington on the Bellarine Peninsula. Cloud obscured their vision as they tried to follow Port Phillip Bay’s western rim. When the pair dipped from the clouds, they received the fright of their lives to find themselves above the Laverton RAAF base with a dozen Wirraways and several Lockheed Hudsons and Avro Ansons. Matters escalated swiftly as two of the planes set after them in hot pursuit. Likewise as they flew over Altona and the Williamstown rifle range where anti-aircraft gun crews sighted them, but Fujita and Okuda were out of range before the gobsmacked officers beneath them received the OK to fire. The intrepid Japanese duo continued their perilous, merry way across Melbourne, dropping as low as 300 metres but progressing unmolested while they took careful note of the city’s CBD, port and docks, suburban houses, gardens, livestock and countryside. The east coast of the bay, down Brighton and Frankston way, revealed 19 ships and boats, among them six warships, five destroyers and a light cruiser – all valuable information for Japan when they returned to their submarine, I-25. The story doesn’t end there. Fujita went on to scout across Hobart and New Zealand’s Wellington and Auckland plus Suva and American Samoa. But his most dramatic wartime effort was in America, where he earned the distinction of being the only

“fujita’s story surprises most people i tell it to” person to land bombs on the mainland. He did so, also in 1942, setting fire to forest in southern Oregon in a Japanese bid to draw US attention from the Pacific back to defending its western coast. The fires resulted in the deaths of a small group on a church outing and possibly a woman in Montana. After the war and all its horrors, Fujita was deeply ashamed of his attacks and sought to atone for his part in the fires around the
town of Brookings. He visited the town in 1962 to make his apologies and try to forge a relationship between the US and Japan that might help prevent war in the future He carried with him a 400-year-old samurai sword – a family heirloom – and was understandably anxious about his visit. His daughter later revealed he intended to take responsibility for his actions if the Oregon townsfolk were still angry – by ritually disembowelling himself to appease them. The people of Brookings took Fujita’s peace mission on board. His sword was placed in the library, to which the Japanese airman also donated money for books about Japan so kids might learn about his country. Fujita was made an honorary citizen of the town and treated with respect. But while greatly moved, he believed none of it was deserved. His actions did strike a chord and when he died in 1997, The New York Times noted his story. This isn’t an Anzac Day story per se but war is a monstrous thing where all sorts of boundaries are torn apart. Sometimes its finest figures are the last people you expect. ● nmurphy@theweeklyreview.com.au www.facebook.com/ theweeklyreviewgreatergeelong @twrgeelong

I have been involved with Anam Cara House since … 2014, when I became chair of the Foundation Board. My previous roles/careers have included … I am a workplace relations lawyer by trade and moved into business as my “day job” with the CT Management Group about five years ago. Our head office is based in Geelong. Before that I spent more than a decade in Melbourne working in law firms and as an in-house lawyer within large businesses. I am passionate about … community service, people, business, the Geelong Cats and Australian Rules Football. I am inspired by … people who give and expect nothing in return. A typical working day for me is … about 12 to 14 hours long. A mixture of meetings, seeing clients, business development and constantly moving my brain across the various roles and

setting. The family of the person receiving care is also looked after, the person receiving care is in control as much as possible and given the dignity and respect they deserve.
I love my job because … at Anam Cara House there are about 70 volunteers all performing vital duties. I am proud to be one of them as the house board chair. We are working together to make a tremendous difference in individuals’ lives. The highlight of my career so far has been … in business it’s been growing the CT Management Group; in football it’s Geelong’s 2011 premiership while I was a club director; in law, achieving outcomes that improve people’s lives; and in the community, becoming part of the Anam Cara House family. I decided to work in this industry because… I wanted to take on roles that were varied, that would challenge me and where I had an opportunity to give back to the community. Providing hospice respite and end-of-life care in a “home environment” is very important… because not everyone can receive this care in their own home and not everyone wants to receive this type of care in a hospital or aged-care
Outside of my work with Anam Cara House I am involved with … my day job as an executive director at the CT Management Group, and a director on the boards of the Geelong Football Club, Geelong Gallery, Doutta Galla Aged Services and the Barwon Sports Academy.

Becoming the new board chair of Anam Cara House is … an enormous privilege. In our eight years of operation, Anam Cara House has supported more than 15,000 people from Geelong and the region, many of whom have received a life-impacting diagnosis and require hospice and end-of-life care.

bridging the past NOEL MURPHY reflects on geelong’s place in the anzac day tradition
anzac day \ 2016
A
black and white photo of soldiers marching across the old bridge at Fyansford during World War I quietly speaks volumes for the role Geelong played in that conflict. Recruits from the Geelong Showgrounds Camp, they could not have known the significance of their boots crunching across the grey, tri-arched bridge over the Moorabool River. Fact is, for all the men and women who served, for all the 60,000 Australians who gave up their lives in that terrible and terrifying war, the engineering skills employed beneath the recruits’ feet helped bring an end to the war. The bridge was built by John Monash more than a dozen years earlier, well before he became the general behind arguably the most significant victories of the war. Monash used a system developed by French horticulturalist Joseph Monier, who started using wire to reinforce his gardening pots. The idea was also picked up by the German Gustav Wayss and put to reinforcing work in the dugouts and bunkered pillboxes of the German lines. Monash, an engineer savvy to the strengths and
“it’s good for younger ones to recognise their service for what it was, what it was about” weaknesses of such fortifications, deployed forces to undermine them. Together with his tactical martial skills and his brave Australian shock troops, he was able to score decisive victories in Messines, Hamel and Villers-Bretonneux, the turning point of the war. It’s an odd connection that’s not diminished by the efforts of Geelong’s gallant servicemen and women across numerous theatres of war.
A
ll up, some 3000 people from Geelong served overseas in the Great War. Avenues of honour throughout the region commemorate the fallen but a great many other soldiers, nurses, support crew and others returned home battered, traumatised and mutilated to pick up the pieces. Figures such as Albert Jacka, from Winchelsea, stand out for extraordinary feats of valour, despatching seven Turks single-handedly in a Gallipoli trench and earning a Victoria Cross. Lara’s Kitty McNaughton nursed the shattered and dying veterans of Gallipoli. She was awarded nursing’s highest decoration, the Royal Red Cross, first class, for her work, often under not just rugged conditions but under the yoke of ignorant and uncaring officialdom. Barwon Heads’ Mick Moon led a battalion that

breached the Hindenburg Line at Bullecourt and earned a VC. He was wounded four times in the action but his platoon trapped 186 Germans. His grave is at Mount Duneed. Drysdale’s Percy Cherry received a posthumous VC for “bravery beyond description” after capturing a Somme machine-gun post single-handedly and turning it on the fleeing Germans before later being killed by a shell. Bannockburn’s Roy Longmore’s WWI service was spent mainly underground doing the sapper work that was one of Monash’s strengths, tunnelling close to Turkish trenches. Still, he was shot twice and, as the last surviving Victorian veteran of Gallipoli, received a state funeral in 2001. Highton’s James Newland’s tenacity and disregard for his own safety on three occasions in France in 1917 earned him a VC. He’d earlier been wounded at Gallipoli. This year’s Anzac Day, as it has for many years, will look beyond the Suvla Bay fiasco that shocked Australia to its core more than a century ago. It will commemorate the men and women who served in the numerous theatres of two world wars, in Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, Iraq, East Timor and Afghanistan. It will be
a day of sombre reflection and ritual commemoration, marches, wreaths, odes and prayers, flames and rifle salutes. It will be a day of tears, reunions, old comrades, beer and two-up. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will also be on hand to mark the efforts of their forebears, to march, to sport the medals they’ve proudly inherited.
T
he timing of the 4.15am service at Geelong’s distinguished Peace Memorial in Johnstone Park – one of just three fully enclosed shrines in the country – marks the early morning assault on Gallipoli. To say it’s moving is an understatement. Likewise the powerful dawn service at Torquay’s Point Danger, the largest Anzac gathering outside Melbourne. A re-flame service will be conducted at 9.30am at the Geelong RSL and at 11am Geelong’s Anzac Day parade will proceed along Malop Street to Johnstone Park, where thousands will congregate to hear addresses from, among others, naval captain Rob Glanvill. Geelong RSL president Andrew Hanns says a striking aspect of this year’s affair is the union of two long-sparring Vietnam veterans groups to mark the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. “Both the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia

and the Vietnam Veterans Federations of Australia will come together, and march together,” says Andrew, a veteran of East Timor. “They will lead the 11am march along Malop Street to Johnstone Park. Long Tan’s 50th anniversary is obviously a milestone but I think for them, the veterans, it’s good for younger ones to recognise their service for what it was, what it was about.” David Weeks, of the Vietnam Veterans Association Geelong & District branch, says the move is about getting back to basics and looking after veterans and their families as numbers dwindle and the next generation picks up the baton. “There’s a lot who have dropped out one way or another. This is a chance to reconnect, say hello to your mates, make sure everyone’s all right,” David says. “A couple of people are too proud to say they’ve got issues, we can help them. It’s a pretty regular thing, when membership starts to wane you ring around and say,p ‘What’s going on?’. We have a couple of cases where their partners need full-time care, or need something for them.” ● nmurphy@theweeklyreview.com.au ANZAC DAY SERVICES » P10-11
Geelong catafalque parties – soldiers who stand sentinel at our military shrines and cenotaphs – boast a service heritage that dates back to the Gold Rush days. What is now Geelong’s Australian Army Reserve unit, the 8th/7th Battalion, Royal Victoria Regiment, which is based in the large timber drill hall on Myers Street, originated as the Geelong Rifle Corps at a time when colonial authorities feared Russian forces might target Geelong. Port Phillip was the richest port in the world at the time and deemed a target, especially with the Crimean War in full swing. With news from overseas taking two months to arrive, local fears were perhaps understandably a little frayed. The corps became a fixture of Geelong, with many incarnations down the years. These days, it serves as an Army Reserve infantry company with a cross-section of Geelong volunteers providing a ready, community-based force. Warrant Officer 2 Lucas Hourigan, who is Alpha company’s training officer, says the unit’s personnel bring varied skills and take army-learnt skills back to civilian life. “We have university students, apprentices, lawyers, nurses, teachers, admin assistants – they’re all infantrymen,” he says. “On Anzac Day, we’re doing catafalque guard duties, standing sentinel around the shrines and memorials. We start with the 4.15am pre-dawn service at the Johnstone Park
C 1900 S
Peace Memorial and we will have guys at Torquay’s Point Danger service. “We support Norlane RSL, the Belmont RSL, and we support the dawn service at the Boer War memorial at Kardinia Park. In addition, we do other duties as flag orderlies at University Hospital Geelong and the McKellar Centre [aged care].” All up, the reserve unit will provide up to 40 members for Anzac duty, virtually its full complement. It’s a solemn duty and one carried out with the knowledge Geelong’s guardians have been doing as much for more than 160 years. The reserve is this year also providing support in the Army’s Exercise Hamel. The Battle of Hamel, on July 4, 1918, was a successful attack launched by the Australian Imperial Force and several American units against German positions in and around the town of Hamel in northern France. The battle was commanded by Lieutenant General John Monash, who employed the new tactics of combined forces to successfully complete the battle in 93 minutes – previous battles using conventional tactics lasted for weeks or months with high casualty rates. The Battle of Hamel paved the way for Allied victory in World War I. ●

CAMP gALLIPOLI housands of people will flock to the Melbourne Showgrounds equipped with sleeping bags and swags for an overnight camp-out on Anzac Day eve. The camp-out is an experience run by a non-profit organisation called Camp Gallipoli. It was first held in capital cities and some regional centres last year to mark the centenary of Anzac Day. Among the thousands at Camp Gallipoli this year will be 10 students from North Geelong Secondary College. The year 10 and 11 history students will arrive at the camp on Sunday afternoon. The camp-out starts at 5pm and will involve a remembrance ceremony, entertainment and mateship commemorating the Anzac spirit. Chart-topper Taylor Henderson will perform in Melbourne, alongside school bands and choirs. North Geelong SC humanities co-ordinator John Doyle says the camping will be quite basic. “They just have a sleeping bag and mat,” he says. “They can bring tents, but we use public transport to get there, so they would have to carry it all.” Some of the school’s students were involved in last year’s first camp-out. John says they had no idea what to expect. “Last year the students slept under the stars and it started to rain, so they had to find shelter. It shows them the hassles of sleeping outside and they start to think about how the Anzacs had it. They didn’t have the modern luxuries like we have,” he says. “The students endured the rain and did really well.”

he newly opened House of Shalimar has added an authentic Indian accent to Mercer Street’s dining strip. Owner-chef Umadevi Antonypillai, who runs the business with her two sons and future daughter-in-law and manager Meera Batra, has also owned the Original Wood Oven Pizza on the adjacent corner for the past five years. With a contemporary water feature at the entrance, the contrasting red-black-gold hued interior boasts richly patterned carpet, floor-length embroidered gold drapes, upholstered studded chocolate-coloured banquettes and gold chairs. Tables are attractively dressed with overlays on caramel cloths, matching serviettes sit in decorative rings and classic quality tableware completes the picture. The welcoming and knowledgeable staff will guide you through the comprehensive menu, which features all the familiar dishes such as chicken, beef, lamb, seafood and vegetarian curries in all their semblances – Madras, korma, vindaloo, kofta, tikka masala, kadhai, jalfrezi and rogan josh – along with rice, biryani, roti, paratha and naan breads, pickle and chutney condiments and more. Meera says: “Umadevi’s goat biryani is amazing and the Malabar prawn curry, squid curry and grilled whole snapper, which serves two is also really popular. Her other
specialties include vegetarian dishes such as bhindi (okra) masala, pumpkin curry and Baingan eggplant masala. “While most places serve one coconut-based chutney with the crispy dosa crepes, Umadevi also makes a second authentic south Indian chutney with tomato paste and tamarind, something that very few restaurants serve. We also have Kerala paratha, which is a layered flaky flatbread you won’t find at other restaurants.” For something different try the Bengali beetroot kebab of two fresh beetroot patties with aromatic fennel, dry mango powder, mint sauce and beetroot raita as a starter. Idlis are mini savoury rice cakes somewhat resembling flying saucers that are often eaten for breakfast. They are made from ground rice and then steamed and served with an accompaniment of sambhar – a mix of lentils, tamarind and vegetables. There’s a focus on southern Indian dishes such as chicken 65, spicy deep-fried chicken originating from Chennai cooked with curry leaves and served with onion rings and lemon, dosa crepes in various guises, Shalimar beef chukka, Konkani egg curry and coorgi meen kari fish cooked in coconut and whole chillies garnished with crispy curry leaves. Dishes from other regions such as Goa, Kerala and Amritsar in northern India are also well represented.

Bleasdale Generations Malbec 2014 (Langhorne Creek) $32; 14.5%
WITH BEN THOMAS
Bleasdale has a long history of producing high-quality malbec, a grape made famous in Argentina. My goodness, this smells nice and it tastes even better. Violets, plum and hints of clove lead to dense plum and blueberry flavours. It’s concentrated but light, with firm, fine tannins – perfect for a steak. Length is impressive. ●

SHERBET FALOODA
Goat tends to be erroneously known as mutton in India. Shalimar’s aromatic Chennai express goat curry is a southern Indian specialty cooked on the bone with coconut and red chillies while the legendary northern Indian dhaba version is slowly cooked in a mix of whole spices, onion and tomato gravy. Further extending the goat offerings is the chef’s family aloo recipe with potato chunks in coconut milk and curry leaves in dum – slowly cooked in a sealed container. Following mains, finger bowls of warm acidulated water brought to the table further reflect the restaurant’s attention to detail. Dessert offerings include syrupy gulab jamun and pistachio and almond kulfi served with chilled vermicelli noodles. vermicelli, raspberry and strawberry jelly, gelatinous-like sabja sweet basil seeds and vanilla ice-cream served in a stemmed glass – is another of Umadevi’s specialties. Palate-cooling drinks include lassi, chai and chaas – a light salted yogurt-based drink with fresh coriander, ground cumin and mustard seeds that is popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Meera’s secret recipe for fresh lime soda from the streets of India is made to order with fresh juice, salt, sugar and soda while Kashmiri kahwa is a cinnamon-infused, antioxidant-rich tea with almonds. ● GAIL THOMAS » House of Shalimar, 68 Mercer Street, Geelong. If your friends are wine wankers, here’s your chance to get one back at them – on a budget. There’s no point bringing a knife to a gunfight, so avoid common varieties such as shiraz, chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon. Your friends will always have a story about one of those to outdo your selection, so go for an alternative grape. ●

COFFEE CULTURE THE BLACK PEARL
“It’s incredible,” says Jack. “You will drink it and it doesn’t taste like coffee, which is why it is so exciting because it is coffee. “Geisha is more a delicate profile, you could think it is tea.” He’s right – this is something you could sip all day. It’s one of many surprises at The Black Pearl, which at first glance seems an unlikely coffee spot. It serves up fish and chips and pizzas alongside quality freshly roasted beans from Kazbah Coffee, based in Birregurra. Jack loves exceeding the expectations of first-time customers who often stop in as they travel through Winchelsea. “People drive past and they might come in here because they see the coffee sign and then we shock them with our coffee,” he says. The Black Pearl’s regular espresso blend is Kazbah’s Hey Habib. It is a mix of Indonesian and African beans but beyond that Jack says Joe likes to “keep people guessing”. There’s also a different single origin every week, plus bottles of cold drip and espresso iced coffee in the fridge. Jack says he’s always trying to educate regulars about coffee and open their minds to new things. He wants more people to try black coffee so they can taste the true flavours of the beans. “If I am making them a latte I sometimes give them a shot of black coffee,” he says. “When they start talking about it they can

VERY THING “I JUST LOVE E ABOUT COFFEE”
(REG RYAN)
J
ack Simpson bounds energetically around behind the counter of The Black Pearl in Winchelsea. The barista quickly tamps a batch of freshly ground coffee before ducking across the cafe to check the progress of his latest cold-drip brew. It’s been brewing overnight and is done so he’s quickly on to the next task of whipping up a batch of filter coffee on his favourite Behmor appliance out the back. It could be his youthful exuberance or simply the morning’s sizeable caffeine intake kicking in, but within minutes the 22-year-old has managed to produce a beautiful flat white topped with a leaf design and one of the smoothest filter coffees I’ve ever tasted. “I just love everything about coffee,” Jack says, clearly relishing the opportunity to talk about his number-one passion. His latest obsession is a particular bean he and his boss Joe Habib, the owner of The Black Pearl and Kazbah Coffee Roasters, discovered at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo a few weeks ago. The Panama La Mula Geisha is a rare varietal of arabica bean prized for its floral bouquet and delicate flavour. “We got hold of some green beans and Joe roasted them up and it just blew my mind,” says Jack. It’s too expensive to sell to customers but I’m lucky enough to be offered a cup of the filtered brew.

It’s like wine.” At 22, Jack has a long history behind the coffee machine. He started working for Joe as a paperboy aged 11 when Joe ran the Birregurra General Store and soon started making himself a coffee on the store’s machine before his deliveries. “My first coffees were horrible but it is one of those things that, once you learn where you have gone wrong, you start to realise where you can go right,” he says. s our love of marble due to our favouring the “nature trend”, where we celebrate natural elements in our home for some earthy grounding? Or are we drawn to the luxury of this material, once reserved for the wealthy but now more accessible than ever? Whether in our kitchen benchtops or creeping in through homewares, marbled offerings steal our hearts. The love affair is continuing – with no sign of a break – as we see mock marbling appear on cushions, serving ware, soft furnishings and even iPhone covers. Denise Dowie from Geelong Marble House says that for benchtops, marble has always had the appeal of longevity. “Stone has been the trend for many years … currently natural marble is a popular choice,” she says, adding that reconstituted stone with its “marble appearance” is also embraced. “New technology with reconstituted stone means the popular look of marble, together with the durability of the reconstituted stone … means it is a very appealing product.”
Denise says Sintered Compact Surface is another “relatively new” product with such benefits as high durability, suitability for indoor and outdoor use and the option of mimicking natural and other materials, such as marble, wood, stone and cement. For serious marble-lovers, there is potential to use this look beyond just kitchen benches. “These products can be used on benchtops, splashbacks, walls, cabinet doors, floor surfaces, shower recesses, building facades, barbecue benchtops and many more applications,” Denise says. The appeal of marble is a versatile one; enjoy the beauty of it on its own for natural simplicity or pair it with other textures such as timber or concrete for a different fusion. In terms of colours, marble is a neutral – it goes with everything – but there have been particular on-trend harmonies pairing it with pastels recently. ● akosmanovski@theweeklyreview.com.au » Geelong Marble House 5277 0899

Two other parties entered the fray and it wasn’t long before the mark was at $400,000 and Aaron declared the property on the market. 36 TINTINARA CRESCENT, BELMONT
11 TRIGG STREET, GEELONG WEST
three-bedroom brick house with views across the Barwon valley. Bidding opened at $500,000 and two parties quickly pushed up the mark in increments of $20,000 and $10,000. The bidding was soon well beyond $600,000 and climbing, with a young woman and another party joining in. In the end, though, it was a young man in a beanie who trumped them all, saving his one and only bid until the last minute to pick up the prize at $685,000. Elsewhere, things were tougher for auctioneers. Matthew Constantine (Ray White Highton) did his best to extol the virtues of the three-bedroom, two-bathroom brick house at 36 Tintinara Crescent, Belmont.
However, the 35 onlookers were largely unmoved and after a vendor bid of $300,000, the only interest was a nibble at $310,000. “This is unbelievable,” Matthew said. “This is the best value I have seen in Belmont for a very, very long time.” The property was passed in at that mark. At 11 Trigg Street, Geelong West, Greg McDonald (Haygarth) tried an old Chinese saying to get some response from the crowd of 30. “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago,” he said. “The second-best time is today.” Greg posted a vendor bid of $400,000 and a man offered $410,000. After another vendor bid of $450,000, the three-bedroom weatherboard house was passed in. ● PAUL CHAPPLE

B
ack in its heyday, this mid-century modernist house would have made quite a statement in its leafy riverside street. Now, 50-odd years later, it takes centre stage again, owing to a remarkable transformation. Houses in this part of town don’t tend to hit the market often. There’s a reason for that. Just across the road from the Barwon River, they have walking tracks and parkland as their backyards. This tree-lined court, in particular, is something of a hidden gem; unless you live here or are visiting, you’d never have a need to drive into it. On an elevated block at the end of the court is a modern masterpiece that commands attention. The facade showcases clean, sleek lines and a two-tone palette of white and grey. Decked stairs with feature lighting complete the impressive entrance to the four-bedroom house. Some reminders of the house’s 1960s origins remain, including the original floorboards in the entrance hall. A striking stacked-stone fireplace, which complements a stacked-stone retaining wall out the front, is another nod to the house’s modernist style, as are the timber-panelled walls downstairs. Everything else is entirely contemporary. Most living is done on the entry level, which has a spacious living area with plush charcoal grey-coloured carpet just inside the front door. Large sliders lead to a balcony with views of the city skyline. A fireplace separates this space from the meals area, with the galley-style kitchen at the rear. The kitchen has an integrated dishwasher, built-in coffee machine, two-tone cabinetry and stone benchtops. Its design and position allow for privacy, while still being part of the living zones. Sliding doors from the kitchen open to a large indoor-outdoor deck that can be enjoyed year-round. Overlooking an in-ground swimming pool, the deck has a built-in barbecue and a sunken lounge with built-in seating. A glass fence ensures the space is secure, with access to the backyard and pool through a side door. The flexible floor plan has to be one of this house’s biggest advantages. There are two bedrooms on the main floor, along with two bathrooms. Both bedrooms open to a large balcony with leafy views across river bushland to the city. Downstairs, timber is a key feature along the hallway. There’s a spacious wine cellar, as well as the third bedroom, which would make an ideal teenager retreat. The fourth bedroom is out the back, in a self-contained unit behind the solar-heated swimming pool. It has a kitchenette, bathroom with walk-in shower, and built-in wardrobe. The house has plenty of storage throughout. For those who need more, there’s a roomy workshop off the two-car basement garage. The property covers 881 square metres and the hard work has all been done to create a luxurious house that provides myriad options for those who love to entertain and enjoy life in the great outdoors. ● SARAH BIESKE property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Once a quaint Californian bungalow, this character house has new edge thanks to a contemporary extension. But perhaps just as impressive is the size of this Newtown block. Covering 1066 square metres, the land presents plenty of options, with potential for a swimming pool or possible development opportunities (STCA) There is access from Bartlett Terrace at the rear. The four-bedroom house showcases a mix of period and modern design, with the original rooms featuring dark timber trim, ornate ceilings and polished timber floors. The four bedrooms are in the front half of the house. The main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. There’s a formal lounge just inside the front entrance. It’s the open-plan living zone at the back where the new owners will spend most of their time. A stunning two-tone, designer kitchen has stone benchtops, an integrated fridge, large walk-in pantry and servery windows to the deck, while glass sliders open the meals space to the outdoor entertainment area. ● SARAH BIESKE

This architect-designed house will impress from the front gate. Design-savvy buyers will love the north-facing orientation, high ceilings and natural light, along with the space and privacy on offer. Inside, the use of timber is functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. At ground level is a stunning living zone with log fire, and a main bedroom with en suite, walk-in wardrobe and study area that could also work as a guest retreat. The modern kitchen has loads of cabinetry and stone benchtops, and adjoins the laundry that is cleverly tucked out of sight. Upstairs, bookworms will enjoy the cosy reading nook and bookcase en route to the remaining bedrooms (one with its own private balcony). There’s a study area with built-in desk and a shared bathroom that takes in the rural views here, too. There is a studio apartment above the carport that could suit a retreat, home office or extra storage space. The large front yard and backyard are a great space for kids and dogs to roam free. ● REBECCA THOMPSON

With more than 45 squares of designer family living, this custom-built, four-bedroom house merges classic design with contemporary needs. It ticks all the boxes, from towering ceilings and luxuriously large living areas, to more practical elements, such as storage. The central open-plan zone opens to a stunning outdoor entertainment area, which overlooks the Barrabool hills. Despite being just minutes from Highton Village and a 10-minute drive to the city centre, you feel a world away. The kitchen is the heart of this home, and is as stylish as it is practical. It features granite benchtops, quality appliances and white gloss cabinetry. A fireplace adds atmosphere to the nearby living area, and a formal lounge at the front of the house is sophisticatedly styled. The main bedroom is a retreat with a walk-in wardrobe, built-in wardrobes and en suite with double vanity. A theatre room includes an elevated section for perfect viewing, and the nearby gym room is a versatile space. The four-car garage has internal access. ● SARAH BIESKE
Once the front door closes at this Malvern Grove address, it’s like shutting out the rest of the world. The brick construction blocks out most external noise, and this sense of privacy is one of the things the current owners will miss most. Loved for its quiet leafy streets and close proximity to shops and schools, this is one of Geelong’s most sought-after pockets for families. This Federation build, known as Marnoo, was the first house in the street, built in 1910. It hasn’t lost any of its beauty over the years and has been carefully restored to provide easy family living, with a few quirks along the way. There are three downstairs bedrooms, and the upstairs main has an en suite and a wall of built-in wardrobes. There’s a great open-plan zone at the back of the house incorporating the kitchen, and Waterford crystal chandeliers dazzle in a formal living area and dining room. Outside, there are a couple of options when it comes to entertaining, with a covered patio as well as a rotunda. There’s also a huge double-storey garage. ● SARAH BIESKE

BELMONT \ 3 RIVERVIEW TERRACE It doesn’t get much better than this riverside location and sprawling family residence that is equally as appealing as its setting. There’s just one house between this double-storey weatherboard and the river, with a footbridge putting you minutes from the bottom end of Pako and within walking distance of Simonds Stadium and the CBD. The focus of this residence is an expansive open-plan zone at the rear of the ground floor, where a designer kitchen overlooks the meals and living areas. A soaring, timber-lined cathedral ceiling with exposed beams creates a sense of space and allows the room to be filled with natural light. The contemporary kitchen includes stone benches, quality stainless-steel appliances and lots of preparation space. Nearby, the dining area opens to a covered outdoor area for easy entertaining. The main bedroom is upstairs and has its own study nook and sitting area, as well as an en suite and built-in wardrobes. The further three bedrooms and main bathroom are on the ground floor. The secure yard, with established gardens and a Balinese-style rotunda, provides room for the kids to play. There’s plenty of off-street parking with a four-car garage that has rear access. This is a unique lifestyle opportunity to purchase a large home in one of Geelong’s most sought-after streets. ● SARAH BIESKE
