hy is it that when a proud parent pins up a beneficial ventures that need support at inception and a child’s schoolwork on their office wall, it’s flourishing industry to carry them along. Art education, never a perfect-score maths test or a brilliant argues Crean, is central to this. science report? Instead, it is always art – from the Universal arts education – art as part of the national very first scratchings in preschool, to the fully blown curriculum from primary school – might prove to be painting or photograph of secondary school. Art is the one of the most important elements of this new national window into a child’s creativity and imagination, focus on the arts. When I was discussing this and that is what we are always so moved to much-expected policy with various arts figures – a good witness that we want to share it with everyone great and small – they all, to a person, insisted working we can. that unless there was a whole lot of new The federal government’s long-awaited money associated with it, then the document life can be arts and cultural policy puts art education would be just a bunch of “blah, blah, blah” – had in and early exposure to culture at the centre and they are right, in part. the arts of a document that few seem to have much It seems to me that Crean is trying to argue complaint about – particularly when it comes something even deeper: that unless you show with a swag of new money. Australians from childhood how important the In a sign of how tight the times are, Arts Minister internal creative world is in all of us, then you’ll never Simon Crean has managed to scratch together achieve the kind of fulfilled and talented society that $235 million – $195 million of it is new money – by modern Australia should be. Yes, the money also needs cadging existing funds from various other portfolios to be there to help those who have been inspired in that intersect with his, in order to bring about a policy this way to establish an economically sound career, that argues that the arts in Australia have grown and there is some of that: for example, the Regional into mature, multidisciplinary and economically Development Australia Fund ($40 million) and

$20.8 million for six elite training academies in particular deliver on this promise. But the government is asking those who want financial help to engage with other artists to cross-pollinate ideas and link their creative skills with others – dance and music, theatre and literature – in order to best take advantage of the public funds on offer and to maximise their chances of success. Creative Partnerships Australia (which now takes in the old Australian Business Arts Foundation) has been allocated an additional $8.6 million to encourage new funding models – crowd sourcing and micro loans, for example, so the private sector will have new roles to play here, too. Australia will always struggle with the simple demographic realities of a lack of critical mass: our small population might never be enough to support independently all the arts industries that want to flourish. There will never be enough money, public or private, for that. But as Crean seems to be saying, while not everyone can be Cate Blanchett or Peter Weir, a good working life can be had in the arts, if we take it seriously, treat it seriously and embrace it as only a thoughtful, mature country can. \

Cover Story Tom Elliott has a famous surname but he’s making his own history. PETER WILMOTH found out how

I

t’s said an apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree, but sitting here with Tom Elliott I’m telling you that’s wrong. On so many levels. The apple has fallen a hell of a long way. The 42-year-old son of John Elliott could not be more different to the old man. For starters, Tom’s into psychedelic music, the so-called “shoegazing” style out of Britain in the late ’80s. He’s reasonably moderate politically (Elliott the elder once accused his son of being a socialist) and he’s a hip, modern guy. A friend of mine even described him as “eye candy”, an epithet never given a huge workout for Elliott the elder. No doubt, Tom Elliott is his own man, with strong and fascinating views on his famous father (and mother, the one-time state Liberal MP Lorraine Elliott), and the world around him. But first let’s get to know the man who has replaced a not-thrilled Derryn Hinch in the Drive slot on 3AW. We are talking in Elliott’s Collins Street office (he is a non-executive director of a firm called Beulah Capital, a private wealth-management group and, as well as his radio program, he has a two-morning-a-week role overseeing investment strategy). Elliott is charming, relaxed and effortlessly conversational. He’s dressed casually because he’s ridden his bike in. I had suggested we meet in a café but he nominated his office. “I’m a bit old-fashioned,” he said. Finally he sounded just a tiny bit like his father. Tom Elliott grew up in Balwyn and Canterbury, one of five children. It was a privileged upbringing, but his parents made sure money didn’t scramble good values. “We had a pretty conventional, middle-class upbringing,” he says. “I went to Carey (Grammar) from prep, 1973-1985. My sister went there when it went co-ed.” When Tom was at school, his father was one of the most influential figures in the country. “Dad obviously, in the ’80s, became quite a big and powerful, successful figure, very well known. In 1987 he was president of Carlton when they won the flag, head of Elders IXL, by sales the second-biggest company in Australia, and he was president of the Liberal Party. It seemed as though he had this trifecta of business, politics and sport. “Dad was away a lot. My mother really brought us up and did a great job. Both my parents, having come from sort of lower middle-class backgrounds, were pretty old-fashioned in their values. We never had religion rammed down our throats, we never had schoolwork rammed down our throats. I got good marks but it was never my parents standing over me saying ‘You have to do this’. It was up to us.” He says the family was well-off but the children weren’t spoilt. “Dad always made it clear he would never buy us a car, would never buy us a house, would never give us money. We had to work. “But he said ‘We’ll go overseas every year and you’ll see the world and you’ll get as good an education as you want, as high as you want to go’, he would fund it. “I was lucky enough to go to Oxford and I saw plenty of people who have done brilliantly since and I’ve seen plenty of people who have done absolutely nothing with their lives, notwithstanding the fact that they had a great education.” Elliott lived overseas for three years, in the US and Canada, before two years at Oxford University doing a bachelor of arts in philosophy, politics and economics. Did he feel the pressure of being John’s son? “There was a bit of that, probably in the late ’80s, early ’90s. I was in my early 20s … dad and mum had always made it clear that we had to do our own thing in life. Dad didn’t want me to go to Oxford, he thought it was a 6 The weekly review \ March 20, 2013

waste, but mum said ‘You’d love it’,’’ he says. “I think mum had a rather romantic notion of what it would be like. I remember when I came back, she said ‘You still sound exactly the same, that’s a bit disappointing’, that I would acquire some English accent.” What, come back sounding like Sebastian Flyte from Brideshead Revisited? “That’s exactly what I thought. Being wheeled around in a bathchair clutching a teddy bear wearing a cricket blazer.” The kids were taken around the world. “Dad took me to the Soviet Union in 1987 – he was on some trade visit and I just went along. Real eye-opener. Anyone these days who says they’re in favour of socialism, I say I saw it when it was real and it ain’t that good.” Elliott worked as a stockbroker in the 1980s and then a funds manager. He fell into broadcasting at community radio 3RRR. “That’s been a great teacher. You only have to look at the list of people who have emerged from 3RRR over the years to see that community radio is a very valuable asset,” he says. He mentioned Kate Langbroek, Dave Hughes, Dave O’Neil, John Safran, Angus Sampson, Sam Pang and Adam Zwar. “We all came out of the ’90s and early 2000s from 3RRR and worked together at different times. “I do remember the sliding-door moment in ’93 when I met a friend from university – I hadn’t seen her for a while – Kate Paton. She was quite big in TV but at that time was reading the news at 3RRR,” he says. “I said ‘It’s great that you do that’ and she said ‘We’re looking for people to come and do segments. Would you be interested?’. I thought about it for a couple of weeks, then thought ‘Bugger it, I should give this a go’. If I hadn’t done that I’m not sure I would have got into broadcasting.”

L

ast year’s ABC series Agony Uncles featured one of Australia’s more interesting double acts when John and Tom Elliott appeared on the program together, offering their often different views on being a man. The pair was “discovered” by Agony producer Adam Zwar. “I was hosting the weekend show on 3AW and someone couldn’t come in one day and I said to dad, ‘Could you come in for half an hour?’ And the phones rang off the hook – this is a Sunday afternoon, it’s usually fairly quiet. It was funny and I enjoyed this and I said to the program manager, ‘Could we have dad on regularly?’ So half an hour tuned into an hour and on that show it was the highest-rating show by a long way,” Elliott says. “We sort of built this rather interesting rapport and it’s an odd one because I’m the host and he’s the guest. So I’m the one who has to direct traffic and he just says whatever he feels like. “He now does a regular segment on Drive on Thursdays. We built an interesting relationship like that. I don’t debate things with him too much, I just sort of throw ideas out there and he just reacts.” John Elliott has transformed himself, almost into a professional grumpy old man. “I don’t know whether he’s re-invented himself so much as having just evolved into one,” Elliott says. “He doesn’t like to admit it, but he’s 71 now and men of his age and ilk do tend to become a bit grumpy and set in their ways.” Their differences are why they work as a double act. “I remember dad once called me a socialist, which in our family is a serious insult – socialist, Collingwood supporter, the lowest of the low.” What did Tom do to deserve that? “It was just after I’d finished my masters degree, maybe advocating

The Son Also Rises PiCture \ Julian Kingma

some sort of fairer distribution of income, something like that.” Tom offers an unvarnished portrait of his father. “Dad and I … I wouldn’t say we were estranged, but he and mum split up in the mid-’80s. “I think we were all a bit angry with dad about that, about the break-up. It is natural. One of the things you realise as you get older, your parents are only human as well. They make mistakes. To think they’re perfect is the wrong thing to do. Even as a little kid you probably do think the sun shines out of their bum. As you get older you realise they are imperfect people as well.” I asked Elliott if it was difficult to develop his own political philosophy given his father’s was so well-known. “Not really,” he says. “My sister is much more political than I am. She’s quite involved with the Liberal Party. I’m not at all. I’ve been a member on and off. I’m not a member at the moment.” Lorraine Elliott was a member of state parliament during what Tom Elliott calls “the glory years of the Kennett administration”. She left politics in 2002. “Because mum was the one who brought us up more, I probably inherited more of her feelings about things.” He’s not tempted by politics. “People always say ‘Why don’t you go into politics?’. Well, having seen it up close … actually it’s a terrible job.”

A

t 3AW he brings a different style to his predecessor Derryn Hinch. “In the past I thought there was too much – sermonising’s not the right word – but ‘This is what you need to hear’, sort of thing. I like to have it a bit more interactive. “I probably see the world a little greyer (than Derryn does). I certainly have my opinions but you’ve got to realise that other people have opinions too. There’s always at least two sides, sometimes more, to a story.” Is Elliott a good listener? “I think I’ve got better at it. When I was younger and dumber I was more convinced of my own opinions … I’ve changed my mind on certain issues. Neil Mitchell gave me some very good advice when I started hosting back in ’06. He wrote me a short letter and the last thing he said was ‘Remember to listen’, and he underlined it.” Elliott met Channel Nine journalist Elise Mooney after he released a compilation CD of psychedelic music. “Elise bought it and liked it and my email address might have been somewhere in the sleeve notes, and she got in contact with me,” he says. “We had a shared love of music, which is always a good start and we’ve been together ever since.” The pair have a daughter, Ava, 3, who recently started kinder. The Elliotts will soon move into the Fitzroy house they’ve been renovating. He’s ready for his life of broadcasting and family life. At 42 with a three-year-old, Elliott is an older dad. “I was like a lot of people, I let that side of life kind of trundle along. I thought I’d probably have kids one day. Then I realised ‘Oh God, I’m turning 40 this year’. I do think our generation is doing things later …” In 2011, I interviewed John Elliott. He told me: “Now Tom’s become a fairly public person … They used to say, ‘You’re the son of John Elliott?’, now it’s ‘You’re the father of Tom Elliott’.” As the son’s profile increases, that question might be asked even more. pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au We Welcome your feedback @

My view \ THERE ARE SOME THINGS HUMANS ARE NOT MEANT TO DO, SAYS KATRINA HALL

A

friend who did Febfast said the hardest thing about not drinking was being able to stay up at night without the booze buzz. It’s not that she wasn’t having fun being out and about. More that, in the past, she relied on alcohol for the stimulus, and the sugar, to be able to stay up past 9pm. Alcohol gives you energy, of course, but it also makes time evaporate into thin air. Have a lot of it and it can make you forget that it’s even late. Or that you’ve got to work the next day. My friend said that without it she lost interest in whatever was happening – all she could think about was her cosy, warm bed at home. And I have this theory. For eternity, adults have been fermenting just about everything they can get their hands on – wheat, bark, the honey of a stingless bee. Almost every ancient civilisation we know about gave it a go. And that’s because, without it, no one would have ever been able to stay up much past the time that the sun goes down. We’re just not meant to. Humans are made to be in the cave, in bed by the fire, by 9pm, and if they’re not it’s because they’re up drunk and dancing around it. There just doesn’t appear to be an in-between. And I realised during a flight from Sydney this week, when a woman threatened to vomit, a toddler screamed incessantly and I sat wedged between two large men who were so close to me I could feel the hairs on their arms touching mine, that there are a few other things humans really aren’t made to do. Flying is definitely one. I don’t have a problem with aerodynamics, nor that weird, surreal, existential moment when you realise you’re in the air. It’s the discomfort. Aeroplanes are clever things, they’re just not designed

We may as well be back in the cave

to have people in them. Nor are airports. They’re nothing but a series of corridors that lead everywhere, and yet nowhere, and all of them look the same. What’s different is how we navigate them. Suits sprint along like they own those corridors, people on holiday manage the process by drinking beer at breakfast, parents seem to get through the endless foot journey with the help of lollies and Disney activity sets, and anyone over the age of 60 will arrive three hours early, just in case they get lost. Who can blame them – those corridors are hard, man. I don’t think humans were meant to eat wheat or drink milk either, nor should they be employed in the business of door-to-door sales. I’ve just had someone bang on my door right now and it frightened the life out of me. These days, when the doorbell goes off or the landline rings, I jump high and then I realise someone is trying to sell me something. Or it’s my mum. And the other thing that I’m not entirely convinced we should be doing is driving. The amount of faith and trust you need to impart to the universe and every other madman on the road to not make a mistake is just too much, which isn’t such a good thought to have at a busy intersection. So, if we’re not meant to drive, fly, stay up past nine, eat wheat and drink milk and bang on other people’s doors offering them things, we may as well be back in the cave. I’m up for it. \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.au we welcoMe your feedback @

hen locals have embraced a newcomer, it’s families that show the love best – big tables of patchwork clans, quiet couples, nuclear groups, and a few with plus-ones still sussing out the turf. Add to the mix uncomplicated, well-priced Italian food, charisma aplenty from experienced operators, a gorgeous old building and the formula for domestic dining harmony seems assured. New love (and potential families of the future) will be nurtured here in Mont Albert’s leafy main street. I’m sure of it. Patrick Ciccaldo and Hugo Diaz are old hands, and they admit they love suburban diners. The duo, of Café Bedda fame in Northcote, knows how to turn on the charm, construct a menu and lure diners back again and again. And while their formula sounds transparent enough, it’s one that many others have tried to get right, and failed. It’s more than just good Italian food, loads of variety, budget-friendly prices and accessible wines, but they are the parts of the sum. Ciccaldo, who works front of house, has lived in Mont Albert for 12 years, Diaz, the chef, travels from further north. They had hoped to open a second restaurant, and theirs is now in the space where Ciccaldo’s wife once had her hair cut. Diaz is still cooking in the new venue, which opened in October, alongside Alessandro D’Auria (ex Pizze & Fichi, Kew), who mans the wood-fired pizza oven. Diaz plans to return to Bedda when he finds the right pair of hands to run Centrale. The food at Bedda is strictly Sicilian – and that has worked well for four years – but at Centrale (Ciccaldo pronounces both nicknames much prettier than I do) the menu spans the boot too, from Calabria to Naples, Bologna and further north. There’s a changing array of assaggi that always includes “something potato-based like croquettes or fritters” says Diaz. Our cazzilli (potato croquettes infused with Asiago cheese and diced ham) were fluffy, gooey and golden-crumbed, with a scattering of rice to add body and bits of quality ham for bite. Beside knockout pipi arustiti (roasted red peppers in garlic, basil and olive oil) thinly sliced, not too heavy on the additives and seemingly flavoured by the Mediterranean sun, and acciughe (Sicilian anchovy fillets marinated in olive oil and a white-wine vinegar), they were an agreeable combination of sweet, sour and texture. There’s usually an olive offering, perhaps filled with veal mince, crumbed and fried or marinated in garlic and herbs, a charcuterie selection and maybe arancini or gamberi in padella (whole king prawns with chilli and garlic), but a large portion of the menu changes weekly to retain local interest. Naples-style pizzas – the Bedda/Centrale recipe boasts a thick base and dough rested for up to 72 hours to soften its texture and increase its flavour – feature scant, base-highlighting toppings and are a menu constant. The Vesuvio arrived with the requisite sparse-but-tasty tomato, mozzarella, hot salami, roasted peppers and olives, although ours was missing the chilli

and thus the name-suggesting heat. The thin, slightly chewy base, puffy, untopped outer edges and more of those fabulous capsicums almost made up for it. The owners have named their favourite pizzas. There’s a Signor Hugo, with porcini, mozzarella, gorgonzola and parmigiano, and a Santo Pasquale with pork and fennel sausage, chilli and chicory. They are among more than a dozen crowd-pleasers. Pastas such as baked ricotta gnocchi, prawn-filled ravioli or Bologna’s classic sauce with tagliatelle change constantly, and the risotto offerings alternate too. Our blushing baby beetroot version was bubbling with goat’s cheese and rocket. As it arrived, my charming Italian waiter insisted that I needed a good red to accompany it and returned rapidly with a Collefrisio Montepulciano from Abruzzo. He was right; it was spot on for pepper and spice.

a funky italian hideaway, Bomba Stuzzichini e aperitivi specialises in stuzzichini (appetisers) made to share, including the popular sweet corn and braised leek arancini with sun-dried tomato aioli.

The leadlight and copper façade of this quaint brick building is classic Mont albert and it has been given a loving and respectful makeover. Black trim highlights windows, polished concrete floors underscore furniture and subtle lighting creates harmony. Bentwood chairs and bare timber tables are a backdrop for framed prints on bare brick walls and the glow of the domed wood-fired pizza oven. Caged drink racks and hanging glasses embellish the bar area, there’s space upstairs for 32 and a softly lit rear courtyard seats about 10. The train station-related moniker is reflected in signage, menu graphics, branded crockery and a ticket-replica business card. \

The wine offering at Centrale is no-fuss and should please everyone. There are two sparklings, 10 whites, 10 honest reds, five pricier “reserve” reds and four dessert wines. Grappa, limoncello (I was offered that with my dessert by the same astute waiter) and sambuca sit beside five beers and a short list of spirits. It’s mostly Australian and Italian and margins are nipped tight. And the dolce? Calzonetto – a half moon-shaped pizza filled with Nutella and served with vanilla ice-cream – was constantly ferried to those family tables. But a semifreddo al torroncino left us with a serious case of dessert-choice smugness – a heavenly slice of frozen creaminess full of Centrale-style Italian love. \ ltora@theweeklyreview.com.au To read more reviews

ever before have I caused so much excitement and enthusiasm, and some scepticism, that my email inbox almost exploded. The fuse was lit by my feature on the Clarisonic a few weeks ago. So what is the Clarisonic? It is a hand-held electrical device that you use for cleaning your face. So why all the fuss and what is so revolutionary about it? The beauty of this electrical marvel is what you don’t see. A company in Seattle set the beauty world abuzz with the launch of the Clarisonic. It’s been lauded by the likes of Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey and just about anyone who’s who in Hollywood. All this for a cleansing machine! Well may you roll your eyes. The Clarisonic uses a patented sonic frequency of more than 300 movements a second to clean, soften and smooth skin. Even better than a media release, I got to meet and interview the co-creator and founder, Dr Robb Akridge (right). He received his PhD in immunology from Texas A&M (Agricultural and Mechanical) University and has spent more than 25 years in medical and health research. Dr Akridge says: “It is not a huge leap from immunology to skincare. Immunology is a broad field. Your skin still has bacteria all over it. People do not like to think about it as they think it is gross. “You should really view your skin as a tropical forest. If it is not in balance, bad things begin to happen. So when it came to designing the Clarisonic, my background helped to see to the efficacy and safety of the device.” The dawn of the Clarisonic age followed the success of the sonic toothbrush. Dr Akridge says initially there was no intention of taking the toothbrush and turning it into a face brush. “We were looking at market trends in the skincare world and how to best move and cleanse the skin. We settled on sonic instead of LED (light-emitting diode) since we already have extensive background on it.” So why is cleansing the face so important? It removes dirt and grime and readies the face for skincare treatments. The Clarisonic does a better job than manual cleansing and all in 60 seconds. The face, Dr Akridge says, is the first impression. “If you want to make a difference in how people perceive you, then always take care of your face. It is the holy grail of skin care and at Clarisonic we take cleansing very seriously. It is the foundation of good skin health.” It is impossible to be too brutal on your face or over-cleanse with the Clarisonic. He says if you

treet-style photographer and now part-time model Candice Lake is on a winning streak. She might call London home (and has since 2009) but with family in Brisbane, she’s always finding her way back and this time arrives in Australia to collaborate with Westfield. Let it be known, Lake is everywhere. She runs a successful blog, got the attention of British Vogue online and now travels the globe shooting street-style photos for its website every time there’s a fashion week to chase. She can be found in the front rows of international shows and scouts the next most interesting person to snap. This season she’s the face of Westfield in Melbourne and Sydney and is here to promote the power of street styling for its autumn/winter 2013 campaign. Street style isn’t about highbrow or lowbrow labels – it’s merely an art that sees a bit of both find its way into your own style with cues often taken from catwalk trends. I caught up with Lake recently while she was visiting Melbourne to be part of the Westfield campaign. “I was actually posting images online from the shoot and was told to take them down because it was all very hush at the time,” says a chirpy Lake, eager to be the first to break news via Twitter to her devout followers. “What I love about being in Melbourne is that it really is the fashion capital of Australia,” she says “It’s very European and chic. The clothes we shot show the diverse nature of Melbourne from big personality pieces to cool labels both locally and international.” Before arriving in Melbourne for the L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival, Lake shuffled between London, New York and Paris for each of their respective fashion weeks. “I love travelling because you see how incredibly different each city is but how close and interconnected we are,” she says of the jet-setting lifestyle. “I find travel very exciting, It’s like small subcultures around the world existing on their own and I love seeing how they each interpret fashion. I never get bored jumping on a plane.” She’s been running her blog since 2011 and says the popularity of street-style photography is on the rise. “It is a lot more prevalent now than when I started,” she says. “You see huge amounts of people outside of fashion shows doing photography. I guess you could say street style is the translation of our fantasy into reality. “People love it because it is hard to interpret the Prada runway into real life, but not so hard to acquire street style when you’re photographing editors and other fashion people and seeing what they do with fashion. I think that’s why it’s been a success.” Lake (who is also launching Bonds in the British market) is also one of the few who can say that she has modelled for Alberta Ferretti in Milan just last year. She says street style is all about embracing what works for you: “It’s about knowing your style and pushing it a

Bea by Christine Sharp » $24.95 (UQP)

Contrary to the current batch of diet books, this one by British nutritionist Dale Pinnock is not about what you cannot eat but instead what you eat to be healthy and energised. Pinnock draws on the ancient practices of Chinese herbal medicine and Indian Ayurvedic medicine to build his argument that some foods act as a therapeutic tool. This selection of 80 easy-to-prepare, delicious meals (“heart-healthy tuna Niçoise salad”, smoked trout and quinoa salad, Thai green vegetable curry) pays tribute to those foods and reminds readers about the simple life-saving recipes modern families can adapt, prepare and taste. \

We love Queensland author and illustrator Christine Sharp’s new addition to the Australian picture-book category. Bea is a delightful character whose individuality and creativity set her apart from the rest of the flock. While the other birds peck at ants and watch worms wiggle, Bea is baking biscuits and buns. Whimsical illustrations and the creative use of text allow the story of Bea to fly. \

Congratulations to South Australian-born author Lesley Jorgensen for taking on the British landed gentry lord-of-the-manor comedy genre in her first novel – and succeeding. The country estate of Bourne Abbey is the setting for her story, described in one recent review as “a big-hearted, clamorous comedy of East-meets-West”. Can Dr Choudhury help Henry Bourne save the abbey from collapse? Will Mrs Choudhury manage to marry off her three children? And what of Richard, Henry’s older brother who gave up his inheritance but finds himself increasingly drawn to his old family home? \

You’ve seen the film (or if you haven’t, you should!), now read the account of CIA operative Tony Mendez’s 1979 rescue of six American consulate staff who escaped during the Iranian militants’ takeover of the US embassy in Tehran, then hid in diplomats’ homes. Disguised as a film producer and backed by a team of undercover agents, Mendez travelled to Tehran pretending to scout for locations for his fake movie, Argo. The book is as thrilling as this year’s best-picture Oscar winner. \

tv » www.uktv.com.au

The premise of this new Antipodean series feels deeply familiar: a young girl disappears from a remote community, leading to an investigation that uncovers a web of secrets. In this case, the small town is set in the mountains of New Zealand’s north island – Hobbit country – and the young girl is a pregnant 12-year-old. Despite being built on a familiar hook, the return to television by writer and director Jane Campion is anything but old hat. Instead, she uses a well-worn map to jaunt off in surprising, fresh and slightly weird directions. There’s more than a hint of Twin Peaks here, although Top of the Lake feels far more grounded. Star Elizabeth Moss (Peggy from Mad Men) has a decent stab at the New Zealand accent, bringing a warm tenderness to her flawed detective, whose strident exterior belies an ancient hurt. David Wenham is gruffly endearing as her somewhat suspect colleague, while Peter Mullan is terrifying as the town’s unofficial overlord. Campion manages to tease us with glimpses of each character’s secrets, without leaving us feeling alienated. We feel we know them, even if we don’t really know them at all. While the direction is faultless – sweeping cinematic shots making the most of the extraordinary setting – it is the writing that truly sets the series apart. Not only is it, to date, the best thing on television this year, it’s also one of the finest Australian productions (or co-productions) in a decade. We have so many top-notch actors and directors, but Top of the Lake illustrates how much better our telly could be if it had the scripts to match. \

If You Leave \ Daughter (4AD) Âť www.ohdaughter.com

The superb debut from London trio Daughter isn’t so much slow burn as gentle thaw. Tunes glow from beneath three feet of ice, content to keep their distance. Elena Tonra’s voice is fragile but aloof, skating across pristine, often minimalist instrumentation. Yet, for all its apparent coldness, this is a work of barely restrained, dirty passion. There’s nothing quite as naked and raw as early single Landfill, but when opener Winter finally breaks a sweat, its ragged energy recalls the thrilling heartache of Lamb’s Gorecki. Indeed, despite being labelled as folk, Daughter’s work feels more akin to that of the trip-hop duo. The album is a work of mood and rhythm – a sort of acoustic take on downbeat electronica – rather than delicate, guitar-plucking singalongs. Beautiful and affecting, the album’s chilled charms are epitomised by new single Still. Stirring the cold ashes of an affair, it perfectly evokes the painful push and pull of broken love, with its two lovers inexorably “reaching for each others’ wounds. If You Leave resounds with hurt, but is all the more delicious for it. \

There is no shortage of damning reviews of this latest Bruce Willis vehicle. Make no mistake, this is a terrible film. Yet it’s also one of the more enjoyable action flicks in ages. The plot is wonderfully implausible. New York cop John McClane (Willis) jets off to Moscow to find his estranged son. Once there, he becomes entangled in a half-arsed plot involving Chernobyl. Any attempt to make McClane a nuanced, vaguely realistic character has gone out the window. Here, he is a psychopathic nuisance, a gun-toting carjacker who takes great joy in killing as many people as possible. Nonetheless, he is the hero. The The plot is action is similarly ridiculous. Trucks jump from wonderfully one freeway tier to another. Our heroes leap from the 10th floor with nary a scratch. implausible If it sounds laughable, it is. I laughed more often and more heartily than during the most recent Judd Apatow effort, usually in the wrong places. It’s a film that doesn’t know what it’s doing but still does it very well. Of course, Die Hard has always been a franchise built on misfires and cast-offs. The original film was supposed to be a Schwarzenegger sequel and the first four were each based on unrelated novels. In that light, it makes perfect sense that number five should be a cartoonish, deeply silly Bond-style thriller. \

Onus on opera the arts \ Painter Tiriki Onus always wanted to be an opera singer. All it took was a phone call from Deborah Cheetham, writes MARIA HARRIS Cheetham’s opera, Pecan Summer, the first opera written by an indigenous Australian, premiered to great critical acclaim in October 2010 in Mooroopna, near Shepparton. With its cast of indigenous and non-indigenous singers, Pecan Summer tells the story of the 1939 walk-off of 200 Aboriginal men, women and children from the Cummeragunja mission in southern New South Wales, across the Murray River into Victoria. Tiriki was cast as Bill Onus in the opera, a role based on his grandfather, one of the activists and a man he never met. During the 1950s and ’60s Bill owned Aboriginal Enterprises, a shop in Belgrave famous for selling aboriginal artefacts. When visiting celebrities came to Melbourne, Bill was enlisted to show them the finer points of boomerang throwing. American singer Harry Belafonte, dubbed the King of Calypso for popularising the Caribbean style of singing, was just one who made the trek out to Belgrave and was captured on grainy 8mm black-and-white film trying out a boomerang. Bill Onus also threw the boomerang for the Queen on her 1954 visit to Australia. Other students were John Lennon and Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew.

t was the phone call that literally changed a life. Soprano Deborah Cheetham, head of the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development at the Victorian College of the Arts, had called to ask painter Tiriki Onus if he could paint a set for an opera she was writing. No problem, said the young artist. But when Cheetham heard that deep, resonant voice, she knew he was more than a painter. She had found a bass baritone. True, he would need professional coaching, but Onus was up to the challenge. “It was the most serendipitous conversation I have ever had. I’d given a tour of an art gallery near Upwey for people from the Wilin Centre,â€? he recalls sitting under a tree at the outdoor cafĂŠ at the VCA. “When Deborah rang me she told me she was writing this opera about the 1939 Cummeragunja walk-off on the banks of the Murray River. My grandfather was one of the instigators of the walk-off. She said if I was interested in being in the opera I could come down and do an intensive program at the Victorian College of the Arts through the Wilin Centre.â€? “I was going to be an opera singer the before life came along and got in the young way,” says Onus. At 32, and now living in the outer tiriki lived eastern suburbs with his partner, a “double Amanda, he says he still misses the life” soaring gums of the Dandenongs, where he grew up. Light-haired and blue-eyed, characteristics he attributes to his mother’s German and Scottish forebears, Tiriki Onus is a big man at 193 centimetres. On chest measurements alone he could probably have held his own with Luciano Pavarotti. “From the age of two I wanted to be an opera singer. My father used to play music as he worked. I would point to the record player and say ‘Pavarotti, Pavarotti’.” His father, Lin Onus, was a noted Aboriginal artist and sculptor. “He would have all sorts of different music for painting. Dad combined Western realism with traditional Aboriginal style,” Tiriki says. “Opera was good for filling works and doing the fine detail on animals. “Pachelbel’s Canon was for painting water and Handel’s Messiah for painting clouds.” The young Tiriki lived what he describes as a “double life”. He lived with his family in Upwey in the Dandenongs and went to The Knox School in Wantirna South where, as well as studying, he dabbled in singing. During the term holidays he would travel with his father to remote Aboriginal communities in Arnhem Land, where they lived and hunted everything from wallabies to bats and brolga, before slipping back into his life as a suburban schoolboy. At 15, Tiriki’s life changed dramatically. His father died suddenly, aged 47. Tiriki was determined to finish

his father’s paintings and sculptures, and by the time he left school had already exhibited in group shows. His path as a visual artist seemed set until that conversation with Cheetham. Five years on, Onus has completed a bachelor of music performance in voice at the VCA and now earns his living as a singer, performing in recitals and concerts, “the bread and butter” of many performers. But the path to a musical career has been a struggle, Onus admitted. “It was a huge amount of work in that I didn’t read music any more. It was especially difficult in the first two years,” he says. Since graduating in 2011, Onus has been awarded the Harold Blair Scholarship from the Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust. The scholarship provides money for singing lessons, lessons in Italian and German, the main languages of opera, and professional development. Along with other indigenous singers, Don Bemrose, John Wayne Parsons and Shauntaii Batzke, Onus forms the core of Short Black Opera Company, founded by Cheetham in 2009. “I knew Aborigines could sing and I didn’t want to be the only indigenous opera singer,” says Cheetham. “The whole idea behind Short Black Opera was to highlight that there was an incredible depth of talent in Aboriginal artists.” Bemrose, 34, dreamt of singing from the time he won a singing competition at his school on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. “My grandmother heard that I had topped the class and she showed me a film of Harold Blair. I’d never heard anything like it before. I loved the languages. He was singing in Italian and German,” he says. After that, Bemrose auditioned for a choir. Three months later he was in Japan at an international choral festival representing Australia. He also enrolled in the Wilin Centre’s Spring Intensive course of 2008.

“For Don, like many of the artists we are developing through Short Black Opera, he’s got a lot of catching up to do as he is a little bit older,” says Cheetham. “By the time Bemrose finished his degree at the VCA, the Short Black Opera Company had a good relationship with Opera Australia and last year he sang in the chorus of Opera Australia’s production of Turandot. “Don moved to Sydney this year and is doing exactly what the company was set up to do, which is to create pathways to the mainstream opera world, much the same way that African Americans have done.” Like Cheetham, Onus is determined to give back to his community and to help indigenous children raise their expectations. Through the Wilin Centre, he runs community engagement programs in rural Victoria, teaching indigenous and non-indigenous children stagecraft and giving them the notion of the arts as a career. “Like Deborah, I am passionate about implanting the idea in indigenous children that school is a six-year commitment, that you can’t just leave after year 9 or 10,” says Onus. “We are all about raising those expectations and showing children that they all have the ability to achieve.” He hopes one day to achieve his life’s ambition to sing the role of Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Until then, it is business as usual, with the discipline of lessons, more lessons and constant learning. “The thing about opera that I love is that there is so much of it. I can discover so many characters and it’s about working together with lots of others and sharing the stage with some many other people.” \ mharris@theweeklyreview.com.au » Tirki Onus will perform at Wilin Week at the Victorian Centre for the Arts, until March 22. vca-mcm.unimelb.edu.au/wilin

class acts \ CHERYL CRITCHLEY MEETS HANNAH RILEY My first memory of school … was in prep, when I had to do a speech about the school values into a microphone in front of the whole school.

is organising notes for donations of wool and setting up for knitting club every Thursday.

At school I now study … grade 6.

When I’m not volunteering in my spare time I … play and train for Diamond Creek Force netball club, hang out with my friends, have sleepovers, do lots of drawing and craft and ride my pony Razzamatazz.

My favourite part of school is … learning different things and Italian, because it would be boring to do the same things all of the time. The least fun part of school is … when we have sport on hot days because we get hot and sweaty. When I finish school I want to be … a primary-school teacher and my dream job would be an art teacher at a small primary school. Apart from classwork, at school I enjoy … art, singing in Glee club or band, knitting club and playing with my friends. My community involvement includes … selling bandannas for National Bandanna Day, organising other special days with the junior school council and starting knitting club to knit blankets for those in need. My main responsibilities in these roles are: For Bandanna Day, it was ordering the bandannas, selling them to school members, their families and friends daily before and after school. For knitting club, it

I enjoy community work because … I like doing things for other people; it’s rewarding and nice to help others.

“You can’t make people volunteer”

Are Australians volunteering enough? Lots of people do but more would be nice; you can’t make people volunteer; they have to want to do it. I would encourage young people to volunteer by … explaining to them how they can make a difference and how good you make others feel. Should celebrities be linked to charities? I think they should because a lot of people look up to them and it shows anyone can make a difference. My community hero is: Birilla (Natasha Jacobs), my old joey scout leader. I always see her out and about with youth members or helping out at community and fund-raising events. Are politicians doing enough for the underprivileged? No, because there are too many people who need help.

profile \ Kate Lamb is the first female mechanic to be awarded master technician status in Australia. She talks to SArAh MArinoS about playing around with cars

W

henever Kate Lamb’s father tinkered with his Holden Camira at their Mooroolbark home, she was by his side. “I loved playing with cars and getting grease on my hands,” says Lamb. “Whenever dad serviced his car I helped, and we had a family friend who was a mechanic and it fascinated me to watch him work. By the time I was 10 or 11 I had no problem changing a tyre. So I could never see myself working in an office. I had to be hands on, getting a bit dirty and fixing things.” Lamb, 33, has taken “getting a bit dirty and fixing things” to a new level as she’s become one of BMW’s most highly credentialed mechanics or “technicians”. She’s the first woman in Australia to achieve master technician status. Based at BMW’s sprawling showroom and workshops in Doncaster, Lamb oversees an 11-member team of apprentices – all male. She’s also on hand to tackle any particularly tricky mechanical issues and to ensure the workshop runs smoothly. But being a mechanic wasn’t an obvious career choice when she left Mooroolbark College at the end of year 12. “When I left school I really wanted to do something hands on, but back then being a female mechanic was even more unheard of than it is now,” she says. “So I started uni and spent a semester studying “By 10 computer technology but pulled out of that or 11 I course and spent the rest of the year working in could change a $2 shop and painting my neighbour’s house. a tyre” Then mum saw a course at Box Hill TAFE – a pre-apprenticeship in automotive – and knew it would suit me.” Eight months later, in late 1998, Lamb completed the course and was offered a four-year apprenticeship with BMW. “The manager here asked my parents to come to

a MASTER AT WORK my interview as well – I think he wanted to make sure my parents were happy with what I was doing,” she says, laughing. Lamb became the first female apprentice for BMW and later the first female qualified technician, too. She is still the only woman in the workshop but says it has never been an issue for her or her workmates. “When I came here I was an apprentice and a mechanic like anyone else in the workshop,” she says. “If I couldn’t lift or undo something I never felt silly asking the guy next door to me for help. And it worked for the guys, too – I’ve got smaller hands so can help them when they need to get into smaller parts of a car.” Customers have also reacted positively when Lamb arrives to help with a mechanical problem. “For a while I worked on our roadside assistance vehicle and I remember being called out to fix a flat tyre for a businessman. He had a big mansion and when I turned up he said ‘So BMW sent you?’ and I said yes,” she remembers. “He smiled because he had a bunch of workmen in his backyard. He turned to them and said, ‘So none of you could change my tyre and BMW has sent a girl to do the job!’ Well, those workmen suddenly came straight out, changed the tyre together and wouldn’t let me do it!” she says, laughing. Working for a prestige international brand has its advantages. After finishing her apprenticeship, Lamb spent a year working for BMW in Vancouver. “At the end of that time my grandmother flew over to meet me and we travelled around Canada for six weeks,” she says.

At home in Yarra Junction, Lamb doesn’t like to be idle either. For the past four years she’s been a volunteer firefighter – again, at her mum’s suggestion. She’s the first lieutenant with Yarra Junction Fire Brigade and has recently been on CFA strike teams in Gippsland. “I was getting into a bit of a rut and needed a new challenge. Mum came home one day and said ‘Mooroolbark CFA is recruiting – put your name down’. Now I’m a qualified wildfire firefighter, structural firefighter, I have breathing apparatus qualifications and I’m about to start a crew leader’s course,” she says. But Lamb is happiest in the workshop, helping a new apprentice improve skills and knowledge, or solving a mechanical problem. “And I work with beautiful prestige cars, which is a definite perk. Road testing a car that has only been released for a week or two is pretty special,” she says. Her favourite BMW? “The M3. Definitely,” she shoots back. “It just goes – and the sound is pretty awesome.” Lamb, who drives a no-nonsense Great Wall 4WD, is hoping her recent success as Australia’s first master technician, will encourage other women to consider a career in the workshop. But she says “girly girls” need not apply – they probably won’t last. “You need physical strength and commonsense, to pay attention to detail and to be able to follow processes and instructions. And you have to be willing to get a little dirty,” says Lamb. “But I’ve never regretted the choice I made. I come to work and get paid to play with cars.” \ smarinos@theweeklyreview.com.au

his month, motorcyclists, I’m taking a look at a Bluetooth helmet intercom system. I understand what this means. Some percentage of you are already saying some variant of the following to yourselves: “Pfft. You know why I ride a bike? For the peace and quiet. I don’t WANT to be available on the phone. I like being alone with my own thoughts. And I’m perfectly glad about the fact that I can’t talk to my pillion – or, more importantly, that my pillion can’t talk to ME.” I’ve had the same thoughts. But at the end of the day, having a Bluetooth headset doesn’t mean you have to switch it on all the time, or connect it to your phone. And I’ve had such good times with this device in the past few months that I’m sold on it. So suck it up, Luddites. This device, and others like it, could change your riding experience for the better. Sena’s SMH10 Bluetooth headset has to be one of the best deals out there right now. For less than 300 bucks delivered off eBay, you can get a double kit with everything you need to deck out two helmets. It doesn’t always have to be the same two helmets, either. The installation process, once you know what you’re up to, takes all of three minutes. That means it’s easy to throw one on a buddy’s lid if you’re going out riding together. I’ve got four of these things and they’re on a different helmet every other day. Riding with an intercom system can transform the act of riding with other people. Let’s take a few scenarios:

With an intercom system, phone). Speech quality is astounding, to the point where feedback is immediate and relevant. BECOME A BUSH RANGER

\ 5 STRINGYBARK ROAD, ELTHAM SOUTH, 3095

I

f you hit a dirt road less than 30 minutes from the CBD, it’s likely you’re in Eltham South. This is – as many locals would argue – genuine semi-rural living at Melbourne’s most convenient. There’s not much suburban about this area’s soaring gum trees, big bush blocks and worn dirt tracks with names such as Wild Cherry Drive and Laughing Waters Road. Also typical of Eltham South are houses by renowned builder and architect Alistair Knox. Many were built in Knox’s trademark mudbricks, but some were built from other materials such as reclaimed bricks. Such was the case at this property. The 42-year-old split-level house was built from bricks sourced from a dismantled church up Bendigo way. So wonderful is the weathered character of these once-sacred bricks that they are left exposed inside as well as out. They are the natural companion to the hand-crafted clay tiles that line the floors and the timber panels on the cathedral ceilings held up by burly timber beams. In typical Knox fashion, the heaviness of the exposed bricks and timber is offset by plenty of windows and glass doors throughout. Believing that a house should live in its garden and connect its occupants to nature, Knox ensured that every room would have direct access to outside. A wrap-around verandah draws residents outside to enjoy the natural surrounds even when it’s raining. This is, of course, when the bush smells its best. It is easy to see that a lot of time is spent outside at this property. For one, it sits on a 4077-square metre block, which offers the kids plenty to explore. They can build cubbies while mum and dad can relax on the main terrace, taking in the sunset streaming through the leaves. If you’re looking for total serenity, you’ll find it here. You can barely see a neighbouring house or fencepost. Only the occasional rumble of a slow-moving car interferes with the peace and quiet.

This absolute privacy makes a dip in the large, lagoon-style pool even more enticing. The pool could also be the centrepiece of any party. Guests can recline by the pool between courses, which could be served outside on long tables beneath the verandah. Dishes are easily ferried outside from the kitchen and meals space, which can be opened to the main living hub or closed off, thanks to a sliding timber door. In keeping with the property’s rustic aesthetic, the splashback is clad in terracotta tiles and the cabinets and benches are all timber. Even the Miele dishwasher blends in with its own timber panel cover. The kitchen also has a 900mm stainless-steel oven and a walk-in pantry. An adherent to the simple life, Knox also built houses to be effortlessly uncomplicated. This split-level floor plan is as straightforward as they come. Its a lower level comprises communal spaces, anchored by a large central brick fireplace. A study is also tucked away down here and is the ideal place to burrow away with a book, a pen or a paintbrush. The higher level has a row of bedrooms off a hall crowned by clerestory windows. The family bathroom and laundry act as a convenient buffer between the kids’ and parents’ ends. The main bedroom faces south-east towards the pool and has slate floors, a small en suite, walk-in wardrobe and double doors that open to the garden. Of the three other bedrooms, one is particularly large and could easily be used as a rumpus or a library. The tranquillity is, of course, what draws people to Eltham South. But what keeps them here is the proximity to the world outside. A short drive will get you to top-quality schools, shops or services. In fact, you don’t even have to get in the car to get a good coffee or meal; Monsalvat’s Meeting Pool restaurant is just a short stroll away down one of Eltham South’s peaceful, picture-perfect dirt roads. \ LIAM CARTER property@theweeklyreview.com.au

ivAnhoe eAsT \ 19 BEAuviEw PArAdE Located on the spine access road for the Beauview Estate, this house is in good company, with the grand landmark of Ravenswood up the road. This one was built much later, in 1948, but the A.V. Jennings’ estate and its Garden Suburb planning, where landscapes dominate street scenes, continues to be a sought-after residential subdivision. Brick paving extends around the house and, combined with low-maintenance gardens, it means enjoying the pool is the only task for weekends. On entry is a staircase with rich timber open treads. The downstairs is a floor for living spaces and entertaining while upstairs has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a study or fourth bedroom, and a second living room. The large updated kitchen is striking with dark timber cabinets, black-granite benchtops, a red splashback and a full suite of benchtop Gaggenau appliances. Flowing into the dining room, glass bifold doors take you out to the paved pool surrounds. The family room has a wood-burning fireplace with a raised granite-topped platform for a hearth and would be a cosy spot in winter. The upstairs lounge has more bifold doors to a balcony with leafy Ivanhoe views. The large main bedroom has a luxury en suite with a huge spa and an oversized frameless glass shower. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

eaglemont \ 50 Durham Street Vaulted timber-lined ceilings and exposed-brick walls throughout this double-storey house define its character, and large, lofty living spaces provide plenty of scope for updating. Set on a corner block of approximately 627 square metres, its position on this beautiful tree-lined street is a highlight. Its floor plan will appeal to downsizers with two bedrooms, a large main bathroom and two powder rooms, as well as formal and informal living areas on the ground floor. There is even a sauna with shower room opposite. However, families will love the large living spaces and a first-floor parents’ retreat that has a large main bedroom with private balcony, en suite and dressing room and an attached landing space that could be configured to suit. The formal lounge and dining room at the front is partitioned by built-in cabinets but is a versatile space with floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides of the room and sliding doors to the stone patio and lawn garden. An open kitchen has an attached meals area and a slightly elevated carpeted family room. A huge street-facing bedroom has a soaring cathedral ceiling and a feature floor-to-ceiling window that is ideally positioned under the canopy of the leafy streetscape. Both downstairs bedrooms have access to the tranquil side garden that features a pond and patio area. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

With large corner windows, this immaculate brick-veneer house is as neat as a pin. Its floor plan evokes a classic mid-20th-century design, with entry off an elevated terrace at the side into a hall that separates the living and sleeping areas. Double doors that slide into the wall cavity open to a classic L-shaped living and dining room. An open fireplace in the living room has been replaced by a gas heater. A recent renovation has created a bright interior with gleaming floorboards and a new open-plan kitchen with red glass splashback, stainless-steel appliances and stone benchtops. An updated bathroom in neutral tones features floor-to ceiling tiles, stone-topped vanity, bathtub and frameless glass shower. A laundry with outdoor access and a powder room are side by side. In the hierarchy of bedrooms, the main and largest is at the front, but the second bedroom has a timber deck reached through a large sliding door. Off-street parking, proximity to transport, Northland and La Trobe University are more features. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA

For the past 36 years, this Californian bungalow has provided comfort and convenience for its owners. Built in 1927, it features a central gable and pretty cream-painted façade with green trim set beneath a red-tiled roof and front verandah. Its classic bungalow floor plan arranges rooms off the central entry. High strapped ceilings, Baltic pine floors and corner fireplaces have been retained. The living room, off the entrance, connects to the dining room, where french doors open to a timber deck. The large kitchen with timber cabinets is separated from the meals area by a benchtop. A spacious front bedroom with a built-in wardrobe overlooks the verandah and is separated from the second smaller bedroom by the family bathroom. There is also a laundry with a toilet. The large, level back garden is a feature. Other benefits include heating, cooling and a workshop. This property is near Ivanhoe station, Ivanhoe Grammar and shops. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA

If you’re seeking the best of both worlds, this elevated beauty could have the answer. It combines stylish living while catering to the needs of a family. The encircling front balcony offers a glorious panorama of the city, and leads into the generous formal dining and living room, with a separate balcony entrance from the family meals area, adjacent to the polished kitchen. Three of the house’s five bedrooms and two of its bathrooms are downstairs, and all have walk in wardrobes. The main bedroom leads to an en suite and parents’ retreat with garden access. Two more large bedrooms are upstairs, each with a balcony and sharing a bathroom. There’s also a study alcove and children’s retreat, with the second study downstairs. The house is close to shops, Ivanhoe and Eaglemont stations and leading schools including Ivanhoe Grammar. There’s also a double garage and storage mezzanine. \ PRISCILLA MOCA

On the front of a subdivided block, this house has its own title and provides the opportunity to enjoy a near-new house experience. Modern interiors feature throughout the double-storey residence, matching the brick and render façade. Textured polished boards shine in the downstairs living areas. A huge living and dining room benefits from its north-facing position and plenty of windows. A rear family room has sliding glass doors to the backyard that has a manicured lawn. The kitchen is stylish with CaesarStone benchtops, Euro stainless-steel appliances and Fisher & Paykel dish drawers. Dark floor tiles offset glossy white cabinetry and white walls. Upstairs, grey carpet is a modern touch. The large main bedroom has treetop views and a walk-through wardrobe to an en suite styled like the kitchen, with CaesarStone and dark floor tiles. The other two bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a well-appointed bathroom. Features include ducted heating and cooling and internal access from the remote-controlled double garage. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

This Merchant Builders’ house takes advantage of its great, elevated block that faces east to the Dandenong Ranges. Despite being 28 years old, it is a design that is contemporary and practical with zoned family living, large open living spaces and a north-facing outdoor area that encourages entertaining. Timber-lined ceilings, exposed Hawthorn brick and earthy tiled floors create interiors that are in harmony with the surrounding natural environment on display in every room. The L-shaped layout has the main bedroom at the end of one wing and the other three bedrooms at the end of the other. Formal living and dining rooms have a wall of windows providing treetop views to the ranges. The adjoining main bedroom gets the great views, plus a walk-in wardrobe and huge spa en suite with slate floor and double shower. The updated kitchen and spacious informal living room look out to the sun-dappled brick courtyard and undercover deck with vine-covered pergola. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

Guaranteed quality. Renovations our speciality.

Winner of the Australian Achievers Award.

MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, of The Williamstown Eye Centre says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for almost all the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery.

Custom designed: • wardrobes • wall units

• bookshelves • garage storage

• study/office fit outs • entertainment units

Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery and I did my training under him. He passed away three years ago but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. “One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision, even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.
