Lentil As Anything founder Shanaka Fernando recently released his autobiography Everybody deserves a place at the table, which covers his childhood and adventures. I grew up in Sri Lanka and the social disparity exploded into two wars. People killed each other in a confused melange of political and ethnic patriotism. Trickle-down economics had failed because some measured their worth by rerouting the trickle into their pockets. I came to Australia to give wings to my conscience and imagination. I sensed that an approach that focused on people rather than money would sprout some telling outcomes. It proved to be the case. Thirteen years ago I decided to open a restaurant with no fixed prices. I just wanted people to be able to eat, connect and celebrate our kinship without money being a hurdle. People from all walks of life thronged to this small pile of bricks called Lentil as Anything. We learned that we all have a very different sense of fairness and all are equally valid. Some might donate a large sum of money while others donate little or nothing. Importantly, we inhabit this space as equals, in freedom, and we repair ourselves to our rightful place in the community. Thanks to the discreet location of the donation box, patrons are able to retain their dignity.

Recently I received an enforcement notice from Moreland City Council – this was the first notice I had received about a parking ticket issued in July 2012 (for parking within 10 metres of an intersection.) On inquiry with the Infringements Court, I was told to contact the council, which I did. I explained that I had not received any prior notification – I was told to send an email and a week later received a reply claiming that a parking ticket had been placed on my windscreen and a follow-up notice had been sent (no evidence – it is up to me to prove I did not receive any). I was not disputing the initial fine of $141 but I object to paying an additional $100 for accrued charges. Beware, as it is obviously impossible to prove my situation and the council is not inclined to assist. Is this a revenueraising opportunity? Outraged. Susan Nash / via website

Save the trees The magnificent old gum tree in Murphy Grove, Preston, is no

longer. Residents’ hearts were saddened when a developer demolished this tall old tree, loved by all who lived nearby. It is time the council placed a heritage overlay on the remaining large trees in Darebin, listened to the longterm residents and insisted that new housing plans maintain at least four characteristics of the houses in the locality, and that if these lovely old residences are to be demolished then the developers create designs that enhance the character of the area.

Paul Lee is not an actor, but that isn’t stopping the North Melbourne resident from hosting a performance in his front office. This weekend Mr Lee, pictured with his wife Jean and artist Rose Turtle Ertler (left) will transform the Lee home into a performance space as part of Home Art. The project pairs North Melbourne residents with artists to craft a performance using objects found in the house. Mr Lee, who came to Australia in 1980 and is an immigration consultant and marriage celebrant, said the performance told his story about “coming to live in the lucky country”. “It’s about the road to happiness in a new land,” he said. He will conduct a tea ceremony and perform tai chi as part of the production. Ms Ertler, who helped Mr Lee craft the performance, said Home Art offered a very intimate experience. “It allows people to walk into a stranger’s home and be part of their world,” Ertler said. Melbourne Museum manager and Royal Exhibition Building Protection and Promotion Project chair Brett Dunlop said reopening the dome would allow people to get “up close and personal with the building”. Concepts for the work have already been drawn up, but still need to be approved by the museum board. The plans would then need state government and heritage sign-off. Mr Dunlop said the dome promen-

Home is where the art is ...

WITHIN three years the Royal Exhibition Building dome could be open to let visitors once again take in the Melbourne skyline. A tentative timeline for the project, made possible after a $20 million federal government funding boost earlier this year, was among early details revealed at a community briefing this

week. The money will also be spent repairing and maintaining the 19th century building to ensure the structure retains its heritage status. It is proposed visitors will enter the building from the south side, with displays and exhibits on the site’s history inside to entertain visitors while they wait to ascend to the dome. Visitors will first stop at the interior mezzanine level, before progressing to the dome viewing platform.

Action on camera BY ALANA SCHETZER A CCTV camera at the Richmond public housing estate has been moved after residents complained it invaded their privacy. Police and the state government set up a mini police station and installed CCTV at the Elizabeth Street estate in June last year to crack down on the area’s drug trade. One of the cameras was pointed at North Richmond Community Health. It provoked concern from residents and clients about being monitored entering the centre. Department of Human Services spokeswoman Ruth Ward said the camera would be turned away from the centre at all times except ‘‘in the event of an incident’’. ‘‘Should an incident occur, the camera may be reoriented by security personnel for the purposes of protecting the safety of residents and staff,’’ she said. Residents welcomed the move.

THE Brunswick community has united in an attempt to tackle public safety fears. At a town hall forum last week residents raised issues like poorly-lit side streets, vacant shop fronts and violence against women. The safety forum follows the rape and murder of 29-year-old Jill Meagher (pictured) in September. Ms Meagher’s death led thousands of people to take part in two antiviolence marches on Sydney Road. More than 150 people attended the forum at Brunswick Town Hall, hosted by federal Wills MP Kelvin Thomson and Brunswick MP Jane Garrett. The forum began with a minute’s silence to honour Ms Meagher. CCTV, better lighting and the police presence on Sydney Road were all discussed. A call from the crowd for property developers to contribute more funds for street lighting and better public transport won applause. Others called

for licensed venues to come together to provide late-night transport home for patrons. Ms Garrett said many of the ideas raised were worth taking further. “It’s important the community is part of the discussion, raising the issues and finding the solutions,” she said. Moreland South Ward councillor Lambros Tapinos suggested more could be done when planning new developments to make sure there were

safe pedestrian access points from main streets. Sydney Road Brunswick Association president Rohini Ratnakar said traders were also feeling unsafe. “As members of the Brunswick community we are anxious to see action taken, that is speedy, effective, far-reaching and permanent,” she said. She said more taxi ranks, better transport links and fewer vacant shopfronts would help make the street feel safer. Ms Ratnakar said other incidents, such as last year’s shooting near Barkly Square and the stabbing of a woman in Albert Street, affected Sydney Road’s reputation, potentially discouraging visitors. Moreland police local area commander Dean McGowan said cost was a factor when considering the installation of CCTV in an area the length of Sydney Road. He encouraged community members to work together and with police to tackle crime.

The City of Melbourne is rolling out an extensive car-parking awareness campaign to help combat confusion about how the council’s in-ground parking sensors work. The council will use 10,000 signs, 200 stickers and radio ads to remind drivers they must pay as soon as they park. Last year, the council began installing more than 4600 in-ground parking sensors. Motorists have five minutes grace time after they park to buy a ticket.

The Sheriff’s Office conducted a blitz in Clifton Hill last week, catching 98 people with a combined 1251 outstanding infringement warrants. The office set up the operation on the Hoddle Street and Heidelberg Road intersection as part of a crackdown to detect fine defaulters. The warrants were worth more than $388,000 combined. Sixteen drivers had their vehicles wheel-clamped for failing to pay fines.

Moreland solar inquiry Moreland council will investigate how many solar panels are needed to

generate energy for council facilities. New Greens councillor Samantha Ratnam called for a report into the council’s energy use, including how many photovoltaic panels would be needed for the council to generate its own power and whether the panels could be accommodated on the roofs of council buildings. Last week, Moreland councillors appointed AGL Sales as an electricity supplier to the council.

Ten people were arrested over alleged drug offences in the inner north last week as part of a police crackdown on drugs and street crimes. Operation Scado concentrated on Richmond, Collingwood and Fitzroy and was run alongside mounted branch, highway patrol and transit officers. Another 48 people were arrested, including five in relation to theft and burglary offences and 11 for assault, property damage and public order offences. Overall, police checked 575 people and searched 19 cars. Senior Sergeant Ciaran Boyle said police exercised a ‘‘zero tolerance’’ approach to crime in Yarra.

Music Victoria wants recognition for an area’s cultural value, including live music venues and rehearsal and dance studios. ‘‘Cultural clusters’’ could include nightspot districts in Swan Street, Richmond; Sydney Road, Brunswick; and Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. Music Victoria chief executive Patrick Donovan said the current approach to noise levels was not working for new residential developments built in formerly industrial and nightspot areas.

The issue of boarding a plane can be a sensitive one for Melbourne lord mayor Robert Doyle. As well as passing through customs, our lord mayor must undergo a certain amount of media scrutiny. Cr Doyle took a stand against overseas junkets, but has changed his mind since becoming lord mayor. Recently he trumpeted the success of last year’s trip to Chinese sister city Tianjin. So the lord mayor was keen to point out – perhaps not entirely in jest – that should he succeed in his bid to join a network of international cities battling climate change called the C40 steering committee, the City of Melbourne would not cop a bill for any travel expenses incurred. A plane or two is entirely possible in fulfilling his C40 duties. We wish the lord mayor safe travels.

THE Condello family is helping to keep tradition alive, reopening their shoe repair shop in the partially revamped Barkly Square last week. Condello’s Shoe Repairs is one of the Brunswick businesses reopening as part of the first stage of the $17 million Barkly Square overhaul. The redevelopment is slated for completion by April next year, while the square’s new fresh food market will be launched next month. It is the biggest refurbishment of the Sydney Road shopping centre since it was built in 1983. Angelo Condello opened the shoe repair store 29 years ago and his three children now work for the business. Daughter Angela Condello said history was important to her family, so they had ensured the reopened repair store featured old photographs of her father. “Some of our customers have been coming here since day one,” she said. A CAMPAIGN to stop a proposed tollroad has backing from a transport user group and Yarra council. The council has called on residents and public transport users to lobby the state government and is flying banners on its three buildings to protest against the proposed east-west road link. The council launched the Trains not Tollroads campaign earlier this year, also supporting a train line to Doncaster as a way of reducing traffic. Mayor and long-time public transport advocate Jackie Fristacky said the campaign was back in full swing after last month’s election caretaker period. The Public Transport Users Association supports the campaign. President Tony Morton said local governments normally worked behind the scenes on these sorts of issues, and commended Yarra for publicly supporting more public transport options. ‘‘It’s really good to have a community-led campaign that’s demanding the government to listen to what will actually benefit residents,’’ he said. – Alana Schetzer

TRAM and bus services would be increased in the inner-north if the Doncaster rail line was built, an expert report states. Tram routes 72 could be extended from Camberwell to Heidelberg via Yarra Flats Park and bus route 246 could be extended to Moonee Ponds to create an inner northern semiorbital route linking to the rail line at Victoria Park and North Richmond. Six Melbourne councils, including Yarra, commissioned the report by Western Australia’s Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute, RMIT and engineering company Arup. It recommended the “stopping all stations” concept – a partially tunnelled line from Doncaster Hill to the CBD via Kew and Richmond. However the report states the

The North Melbourne resident’s work analysing biological data last week won him the $50,000 Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation in Life Sciences. He said the amount of data collected by medical researchers was only continuing to grow and it was his role to help interpret the information. “It’s good to see my field recognised … what I do is not widely known and it’s not obvious that it is important,” he said.

No cost estimates were provided but researchers said the line could be partly funded by imposing extra taxes on properties whose values would rise because of the project. The Doncaster Rail Study, established last year, released three options: the stopping all stations concept, an express train line along the Eastern Freeway and a direct train from Doncaster Hill to Box Hill station. Yarra City Council announced in June it supports the express transit option which it states is the only option that would not duplicate existing public transport services. Amcor dumping goes on SCOTT MCCNAUGHTON

BY ALANA SCHETZER MORE Yarra residents are using the Burnley Depot to recycle cardboard and paper following the closure of the Amcor site in Alphington. The council has increased the number of collections at the depot to cater for the demand. But reports of dumping at the Heidelberg Road facility have continued, with Alphington Paper Mill Action Group spokeswoman Melissa Thyer telling MTW she has seen cardboard dumped at the site. ‘‘It could be a bigger issue over the school holidays when there’s less surveillance,’’ she said. Before leaving the site at the end of last month, Amcor boarded up its recycling drop-off facility (pictured). There are security cameras in place. Cr Jackie Fristacky said the council received about one call a week reporting dumping. ‘‘When we are alerted to dumped materials, these are collected and taken to a recycling point,’’ she said.

‘‘Council also investigates all instances of dumped materials to try and ascertain the source of the rubbish.’’ The multi-national business announced in 2009 it would close the Alphington site in favour of relocating to Botany, in NSW. The future of the 16.5-hectare site has been hotly debated since, with an

environmentally-friendly housing and community development spruiked by Yarra city council. The site remains on the market. Amcor spokeswoman Ebony Kenny said residents had been given ample notice of the facility’s closurand the majority were using alternative arrangements.

BY KRISTIAN SILVA VICTORIA’S local government peak body has come under fire for refusing to support residential asbestos registers. On November 12, the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) issued a statement on its website rejecting a recommendation by the Australian Asbestos Management Review that councils take a lead role in monitoring asbestos in homes. The association said the plan was not “appropriate or efficient” for councils. It was was responding to an August report in which the federal government-funded Australian Asbestos Management Review called on councils to identify asbestos in all houses built before 1987 that were up for sale or lease. It also recommended that councils carry out asbestos inspections before renovations and maintain their own asbestos databases, which could be

used by tradesmen or prospective purchasers or leasees. “[Local government] is closest to on-the-ground activities and it would align with many of their existing activities,” the report stated. The review’s recommendations would eventually, if adopted, involve thousands of homes built with asbestos products. MAV president Bill McArthur said asbestos checks should be conducted by state governments. “They fail to consider cost impacts, constraints already affecting councils and how the proposals would be funded,” he said. But advocacy group AsbestosWise described the MAV stance as “a massive cop-out”. “The database would be useful to home owners, renters, tradies … anyone who’s going to cause dust from internal movement or renovation,’’ chief executive officer Wayne Bruton said.

THE state government’s long-awaited environment policy has been labelled a ‘‘remarkably naive’’ document that fails to mention any targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The policy, which the government promised to release prior to the 2010 election, was quietly released on November 10. The document, ‘‘Environmental Partnerships’’, claims to be a ‘‘realistic and measured approach’’ to improving the health of the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay and managing the state’s parks and forests. Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith said the policy set a ‘‘clear pathway for action by government, community and businesses to work in partnership to maintain a healthy environment and lifestyle while securing a competitive economy’’.

Competition from cheap imports has forced the closure of a West Preston business. Strongbuilt Furniture will close next month after 64 years of trade. Owner Joe Lucente said it was a tough decision but inevitable, given the economic climate. He said recent roadworks, a need for renovations and high rent also played a part. ‘‘It’s emotional, but once I made the decision, that’s it,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s hard because this is like a community. It’s getting too difficult to make a profit. Friends of the Earth campaign director Cam Walker said he was shocked by its lack of detail and targets. ‘‘It’s big on rhetoric and it’s almost absent in terms of substance and it tells us nothing new,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s remarkably naive.’’ Environment Victoria chief executive Kelly O’Shanassy condemned the policy, saying the government was ignoring climate change. ‘‘It fails to address the big issue of our times, Ms O’Shanassy said. ‘‘This problem is going to continue to get worse and not better. I really think they need to shape up and address it properly.’’ Hitting back at the comments, James Martin, spokesman for Mr Smith, said last year’s federal laws on climate change, which includes the tax on greenhouse gas emissions, meant the issue was now largely in the jurisdiction of the federal government.

Beyond the glory

They shone as beacons of inspiration at the London Paralympics, but what comes next for Australia’s elite disabled athletes? By Daniel Paproth and Stephen A Russell

ust three months ago, Australia’s elite disabled athletes were rubbing shoulders with rock stars and being treated like celebrities as the London Paralympics enjoyed unprecedented public attention. The Australian Paralympic team finished fifth on the world leaderboard, winning 85 medals – 32 gold, 23 silver and 30 bronze. The haul dwarfed that of the Olympic team’s total (35 medals) and quadrupled its gold tally (seven medals). But now, after basking in the warm glow of the world spotlight, they’ve come home to their everyday lives. When we meet, four members of the team have reconvened to talk about their experiences. Or at least, three of the athletes have made it – Ahmed Kelly is still struggling to get here, caught up somewhere in Melbourne’s morning traffic snarl. Wheelchair basketball star Dylan Alcott, 21, who was born with a spinal tumour, checks his watch repeatedly, knowing he’ll have to dash off soon to deliver one of his rousing motivational talks at nearby Etihad Stadium. Far from being annoyed, the consummate joker entertains us all with details of his post-Paralympics training regime. “I feel sorry for my liver,” he says, laughing. “I’ve been a full-time drinker for the last few weeks.” He says it is strange being back home after training for two consecutive Paralympic Games. “You put so much time and effort into it and then all of a sudden, with the click of your fingers, you’ve won a silver medal and what do you do now? I’m waking up every day and I have a free schedule and I have no idea what to do with my life.” Clutching the silver medal he secured in London, Alcott admits he had been hoping to retain the Rollers’ gold medal from Beijing, but the Australian team was pipped at the post by Canada. Still he’s hanging on to the afterglow of his newfound popularity, both on and off the court, by hanging out regularly with fellow Melbourne-based athletes. “It was like being a proper celebrity,” he says of his time in London. “People legitimately knew who you were, or they were interested to know. That stuff’s pretty unheard of at the Paralympics, so it was an awesome experience.” He was blown away by the scale of the Paralympics closing ceremony, too. “We had Jay-Z, Rihanna and Coldplay,” he

marvels. “I was getting a bit excited when I saw Rihanna because I’ve got the biggest crush on her. I was about five metres away, I was about to throw myself at her, metal and all.” A charismatic presence with a cheeky glint in his eye, Alcott’s not sure if he’s headed to Rio in 2016, but he’s already working the rounds as a motivational speaker, and is shooting for a career in television. “If there’s a 12-year-old kid sitting at home, having a sh*t time at school and he puts on The Project and there’s a guy in a wheelchair not talking about being in a wheelchair, I reckon that would change how we are perceived in the community.” If he doesn’t compete at Rio, Alcott at least hopes to be reporting from there. And he’d like to see some big sponsorship money heading the athletes’ way. “Unfortunately we don’t get the same amount of money as our able-bodied counterparts, but by 2020 I imagine it will pretty much be a full-time professional gig,” he says. “If we keep building on what happened in London, it’s only going to get better and better.” Katy Parrish, 21, who has cerebral palsy, competed in track and field events in London. Despite missing out on medals, the positive experience of competing at two consecutive Paralympic Games inspires her to push harder as she prepares for a third assault, at Rio 2016. After much-needed downtime immediately following the Games, she’s back at training and has her sights set on the 2013 International Paralympic Committee Athletics World Championships in Lyon, France, and Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games in 2014. “I’ve had a good break, and now I’m just basically getting back into things, trying to get back to reality, get a job and decide if I want to go to uni,” she says. Parrish was 17 when she competed in Beijing, and noticed a huge improvement in public perception in London. She hopes that recognition will continue to improve. “Usually a year around the Paralympics is when everyone wants to know us,” she says. “In between, you wouldn’t know who we were walking down the street.

We’re just a disabled person walking or rolling around. “In London, it was definitely a more emotional Games, and the Brits loved us. A lot of people came to see us as athletes – not the guy with one leg running, or the blind people.” Parrish has no shortage of ambition. “It’s definitely harder for us, but that makes it more fun because we feel like we’ve achieved more,” she says. “Olympians overcome injuries, but we overcome life injuries. It is tough, but that’s why we’re so much more passionate.” Carol Cooke, 51, brought home a gold medal in cycling, beating 13 men and four women in the process. Her success was the realisation of a 32-year dream. Born in Toronto, Canada, Cooke was set to represent her country in swimming at the Moscow Olympics in 1980 until the team boycotted the Games to protest against the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. She moved to Australia in 1995 and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998. A doctor told her to return home and “get her affairs in order” before she became confined to a wheelchair. Undeterred, she pursued rowing and just missed out on the Beijing Paralympics in 2008. But it was in road cycling that she finally achieved her dream, winning gold in the mixed T1-2 time-trial event in London. Like Alcott, she has been delivering motivational speeches since returning from London. “I ask people if they consider this gold medal to be success,” she says, holding hers aloft. “They all say ‘Yeah’ but I tell them, ‘No, the gold medal isn’t success; it’s the icing on the cake’. For me, the success was the fact that I made it to London after so long.” Cooke noticed the positive reception as soon as she touched down in London, where the billboards featured Paralympic athletes. “The Olympic ones had all been taken down; it was all about the Paralympics,” she says. She hopes the games will leave an enduring legacy. “There are very few elite athletes with a disability who have any kind of sponsorship,” she says. “Let’s hope it changes, because we’re not just a bunch of poor disabled

athletes going out to try their hand at something. We all work pretty damn hard to get to where we are.” While there appeared to be disharmony among some Aussie Olympians in London, the camaraderie among Paralympians was striking. “It didn’t matter where you finished, everyone congratulated everybody on a job well done,’’ says Cooke. ‘‘I thought I knew what disability was all about before I went over there, but I had no idea.” Cooke’s reminiscences are cut short as Ahmed Kelly rushes in, an exuberant bundle of energy. Born without arms or legs, he spent his first seven years in a Baghdad orphanage before he and his brother, Emmanuel, were adopted by Moira Kelly of the Children First Foundation in 1998. In London he competed in the final of the men’s 50-metre SB3 breaststroke and finished fourth. Unlike many Paralympian athletes, Kelly, 20, has already secured the support of high-profile sponsors, including Qantas and Samsung, the significance of which is not lost on him. “To have them on board, representing themselves through a Paralympian, is just amazing,” he says. London was his first attempt at the Paralympics, and it’s taken him a while to settle back into everyday life afterwards. He’s finishing off his year 12 studies, having taken an extended break for the Paralympics. Like Alcott, he’s been tickled by the idea of a career in journalism. “The ABC did a really good job covering the games; the next goal is to allow the Australian public to see the Paralympians in trials,” he says. “Yes, it’s good to watch the Paralympics, but that’s once every four years. Now let’s try and follow them throughout. If I can help promote Paralympic sport in any way, I will do my best.” London was his biggest challenge to date, but there’s more to come. “The fact that I made it just shows what hard work, determination and focus can really do,” he says. “I’ve been blessed with wonderful opportunities and I’ve really embraced them. “Mum’s a doer, she doesn’t say no to anything. She’s always out there trying to help society as much as she can. You can’t help but learn from that sort of value.’’ ■

ameron Miller pulls himself forward out of the soft, yellow leather sofa in his sparsely furnished Richmond apartment and rolls up the right sleeve of his black T-shirt. “I lost my best mate as well as my son,” he says looking through heavy eyes at the tattoo of his son Shaun etched onto his upper arm. Although Miller only moved in a couple of days earlier, his new home is already furnished with memories of Shaun – the yellow couch where he would stretch out to play his beloved Xbox, a pair of boxing gloves signed by Garth Wood, framed photographs of Shaun – a Father’s Day present –and a photo board of Shaun both at home and in hospital, embellished with the Bombers’ colours. When Cameron told Shaun he was going to get the tattoo, he made his dad promise he wouldn’t make him look like a “Cabbage Patch kid”. The tattoo shows a good likeness of the young man whose positive outlook and

unwavering sense of humour captured the world’s attention when his video, My Final Goodbye, meant only for his Facebook friends, was accidentally posted on YouTube. Shaun lost his battle with heart disease when his body rejected a second heart transplant in May but his legacy will live on in his book An Awesome Ride. The book is a candid, personal account of his turbulent life, not only chronicling his ongoing health problems, but his family issues as well – Shaun had become estranged from his mother and took out a restraining order on his stepfather at the age of 13. “He doesn’t hold back,” says Cameron, who took over the custody of Shaun. Shaun was halfway through writing his life story when he passed away, leaving Cameron to ensure his story was published and his “stay positive” mantra was shared. “I didn’t really want to do it, but I just had to,” Cameron says of talking to the media

about the book. But taking his son’s advice to “live life to the fullest,” he is prepared to brave the media circus and promote his son’s book. “I’m very proud of him and I’m hoping the book will inspire other people. “Shaun just wanted his Facebook friends to know his story – we weren’t expecting the whole world to pay attention.” Physically burnt out from daily 16-hour stints bedside at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Cameron fell into a deep depression and wouldn’t leave the house after his son died while holding his hand. “My life just stopped, just completely stopped,” he says, sighing heavily. Turning to comfort eating, Cameron put on 20 kilos and also suffered nightmares and flashbacks. Having moved from Mill Park to Richmond, Cameron has now started to piece his life back together and is starting to think about what the future might hold. He’s dabbled in the film

industry but has been thinking about going into real estate. Even when he was close to dying Shaun was still giving advice to others. “He said to me, ‘Dad it’s about time you started living your life,’” Cameron says. “My employment history is very bumpy and Shaun used to blame himself,” he says. “But they’re the sacrifices you have to make as a father.” Cameron shares many stories about his son, often stopping to show pictures on his mobile phone. There’s a passion for precision at this import, writes Kendall Hill he burning question is, since when did Melbourne become a third-fiddle food city? It’s a question raised by the belated arrival Yarra-side of Shaun Presland’s mod-Japanese franchise Saké, which debuted in Sydney in 2009, branched out to Brisbane and, about a month ago, finally opened at the revamped Hamer Hall. Presland is a seriously good chef, who distinguished himself in Sydney by creating the harbour city’s finest raw bar at Sushi-e in The Establishment Hotel. He then did a stint at Nobu in the Bahamas (how nice) before signing on as executive chef at Saké. There’s more than a hint of Nobu here at Saké Melbourne, from the chorused “Irasshaimase!” on entry to deja vu menu dishes such as kingfish jalapeno (cf. Nobu’s yellowtail), sashimi tacos and beef tataki with garlic chips. But even while Saké can sometimes feel like Nobu Melbourne Mark II, I much prefer the space here than the one down the river at the casino. Set over two floors riverside, Saké’s sharp lines of polished concrete and glossy timbers are softened by cut orchids, kitchen shelving stacked with warm ceramics and a sculptural cherry tree

festooned with bud-light blossoms. We take our seats in a slatted, izakaya-style booth. We can’t see the tops of the skyscrapers, just a wall of glittering lights. It’s quite striking. Another Nobu alumnus, Singaporean Rose Ang, is running the kitchen and obviously shares Presland’s passion for precision in taste and plating. Even a simple bowl of edamame is a study in the freshest, greenest soybean pods, lightly dusted with sea salt. They’re followed smartly by a sashimi of kingfish lightly cured in yuzu (citrus) soy, with the kick of jalapeno and the zing of coriander. It’s mouth-jinglingly good, but soon eclipsed by a plate of white soy snapper. The diaphanous, pink-edged flesh is seasoned with yuzu and white soy, nutty sesame seeds and chopped chives. This is almost faultless fish. Tonkatsu pork is a weak link in the line-up. Four nuggets of panko-crusted pork belly and spring onion sit in lettuce cups smeared with mustard miso and barbecue sauce. The minced pork texture is pappy and the sauces seem cloying after our elegant starters. Grainfed wagyu teriyaki has a marble score of 7+ (I’m sure this means something to someone)

and arrives lightly seared at the edges and shiny with sweet soy marinade. A bed of buckwheat, shiitake and soybeans amps up the savoury scale and does pleasant things texture-wise. As with all the dishes, it comes on a beautiful glazed earthenware plate – like something out of Eltham circa 1975, when the hippies were at the height of their pottery powers. It’s great drinking food, and Saké does an excellent line in drinks. The booze list features top-shelf spirits and a comforting selection of decent, mostly Australian wines. There’s even a saké sommelier who proves blindingly knowledgeable about the rice wine selection. He’s like the Rain Man of saké. If only all the staff were as sharp. For sweets we pick something called bubblemilk tea, a bland muddle of tapioca, Chantilly cream and pistachio crumbs that will do nothing to dissuade Western palates that Japanese desserts, even contemporary ones, can be a bit average. You might be better off summoning Saké Guy for another shot of seishu. ■

Decent obsession Ben Thomas goes in search of pinot perfection

Drink this ou need three things to make great pinot noir – a vineyard planted in a marginal climate, meticulous management of that vineyard and an obsessive nature. A self-confessed pinot noir obsessive, Curly Flat’s Phillip Moraghan believes the best wines come from areas with a climate that’s just warm enough to ripen the grapes. For pinot noir, it’s Burgundy in France and, closer to home, Victoria’s Macedon Ranges. “It doesn’t matter what you’re growing, you need to grow the grapes in an area that’s in the margins,” he says. After a searching for a year to find the right site close to Melbourne, Moraghan settled near Lancefield in the Macedon Ranges and planted the first vines in 1991. His Curly Flat wines, including a pinot noir, are now considered to be in the top echelon of Australian wine. “Pinot noir is very fussy about where it wants to grow and I came to the conclusion that I wanted somewhere that made pinot but couldn’t ripen shiraz. I came through here and liked what I saw,” he says. Macedon’s cool climate means grapes ripen

with a high volume of natural acid, helping to balance out the fruit flavours and create tension on the palate. “I find with pinot in particular, in the new world it tends to be either a simple fruit bomb or a dry red wine – there’s not too many people getting into that middle ground that I see in Burgundy. [Macedon] Pinot’s got a certain prettiness about it, but it’s also got power. It’s very much about the earth and ripe herbal notes. For Moraghan, management of the vineyard and caring for the vines is key to producing top pinot noir. “Making great wine is really simple: it’s about the vineyard and respecting the vineyard,” Moraghan says. He moved to biodynamic farming principles a few years ago and says the removal of chemicals made a significant change to the quality of his grapes. To most pinot noir lovers, the wines of its ancestral home in Burgundy, France, represent wine’s holy grail. Its pinot noir is a source of inspiration for every Australian pinot producer, as well as drinkers, and many winemakers

work vintages in France as part of their pursuit to understand the grape. Duke of Dark York Rapper Khalif Diouf leads the march into new era of urban music

&B artist Frank Ocean (pictured) caused a stir a few months ago when he outed himself as bisexual before releasing his superb debut album Channel Orange. Despite often using vivid sexual imagery, American urban music tends to be extraordinarily conservative when it comes to issues of sexuality. The popular phrase “no homo” is testament to this – allowing male hip hop artists to toy with extravagance while firmly rejecting any gay connotations. Thankfully, a new wave of artists is challenging the relentless macho posturing and misogyny that have long characterised rap and hip hop. A few months ago, rapper Khalif Diouf (aka Le1f) released Dark York, a 21-track mixtape that feels genuinely progressive. The

beats-heavy collection (free to download from Le1f’s website) fuses edgy electronica to Diouf’s rapid-fire, near-unintelligible rapping. Murky and slightly sinister, it’s as mystifying as it is exciting. Still, it’s Diouf’s confident expression of his sexuality – mocking “straight rappers” as inferior – that marks the release as something new. The video for standout track Wut, with its playful horn percussion and bouncy vocal line, has Diouf dancing provocatively with a man wearing nothing but a Pokemon mask. Le1f also guests on this month’s release from transgender artist Mykki Blanco, the female persona of performer Michael David Quattlebaum jnr. As with Le1f’s work, Cosmic Angel: The Illuminati Prince/ss (also free to download) is rife with experimentation. There are elements of drum and bass, pop and psychedelica beneath flamboyant raps about hitchhiking priestesses and Betty Rubble. It’s not as moody or, indeed, as impressive as Dark York, but it’s just as ambitious and even more determined to appear transgressive.

’ve somehow managed to hitherto avoid Glee, but this week’s Grease special seemed a good occasion to take a trial session. I’m not sure I’ll be back next week, but can now understand why it has so many dedicated fans. This is a show that is all about the fan experience. Its cast exists to cosplay pop favourites – Madonna, West Side Story, Grease. Characters work through personal issues in the context of songs they’re rehearsing, as if something is meaningful only when experienced through the prism of pop culture. Maybe this is taking the show too seriously. Certainly, Glee delights in being ridiculous, with an approach to realism that makes The Bold and The Beautiful seem like Redfern Now. But there’s something uncomfortable about seeing pop culture recycle itself so selfconsciously. The first time it’s creativity, the second time mediocrity. Set in 1991 – which isn’t immediately spelled out, leading the audience to wonder how these teenagers have even heard of a “mixtape” – Perks is fairly formulaic teen fare. It only really trips up when it strives to be different. We know Sam is edgy because she listens to The Smiths and loves The Rocky Horror Picture Show (that’s what “deep” teens are always into, after all). And yet we’re supposed to believe neither she nor any of her gang has ever heard of David Bowie. Miller is a standout as Patrick, but only if

you can forget his recent turn as the eponymous psycho in We Need To Talk About Kevin. Otherwise, it’s difficult to read that mad, camp gleam in his eye as being innocent of murderous intent. Former wooden wizardess Watson is better than might be expected, generating just enough human warmth for us to believe Charlie might fall under her spell. Perks, skating around its darker elements, is too cute to ever be confronting. Nonetheless, it’s an engaging, entertaining slice of softcore adolescence.

The uknown Infiniti Ecological and efficient, but guilt-free fun comes at a price

ROD EASDOWN BEHIND THE WHEEL ere’s something new. A dash button with little trees. Press it and you’re told that “forest’’ is on. It turns out to be an air filtration system that, if you go by the media release, beautifies the breezes and prevents unwelcome odours. I didn’t notice anything different but I’m a big, boofy, insensitive bloke. Welcome to the new Infiniti M35h, where “h’’ stands for hybrid. Infiniti is to Nissan what Lexus is to Toyota and it’s been around for just as long. Just not in Australia. Nissan had a go at it here back when Lexus was launched in 1990 but the buyers

stayed away in droves. Now Infiniti is back in Australia as part of a worldwide push to establish the brand in markets other than the United States. In launching Lexus, Toyota executed a tightly focused and expensive plan to protect resale values and promote the brand, and it has certainly paid off. It remains to be seen if Nissan has the same wherewithal. As for the product itself, well it’s a ripper. The hybrid is the most expensive sedan (conventional models start around $95,000; expensive against the Lexus IS350) and it’s also the quickest. Flatten it and the electric motor surges in with the V6 to provide a mighty heft, but you must have the gears in manual mode to avoid shift hesitation. Do things right and this is a surprisingly quick and most satisfying drive, and reardrive only adds to the charm. The trick is, it’s also economical. Talk about guilt-free fun. And there’s lots of room and lots of equipment.

INFINITI M35h What is it? Nissan’s answer to Lexus What’s in it? A hybrid 225-kilowatt 3.5-litre V6 that rises to 268 kilowatts when the electric motor cuts in, with a seven-speed auto. Is it thirsty? I used 9.5 litres per 100 km in the city, 7 in the country. The official combined figure is 6.9. Drive away $110,170 Thumbs up A highly enjoyable drive, a heap of equipment and it’s new and different. Thumbs down Colour range is boring, a horrible foot-operated park brake, and the boot’s small.

The front seats can be cooled as well as heated and there’s adaptive cruise control, collision warning, lane departure and a key that remembers your seat settings. There’s also good audio with a couple of tweeters in the seat tops immediately aft of the driver and front seat passenger. But music coming from behind troubles me – when was the last time you sat with your back to the orchestra? The big question people ask of the Infiniti is obvious: is it as good as a Lexus? Yes it is and the bonus is that it’s fun and far removed from Lexus blandness. But it ain’t cheap and resale values are a big unknown. ■

Federation fair After more than a century, this grand property’s still got it

KAY KEIGHERY PROPERTY WRITER istory and mystery shroud this one-off property. The word on the street (McKean, that is, a stone’s throw from Edinburgh Gardens and one block back from the Queens Road shopping strip) has it that the Federation residence was built by a rich merchant around 1908. Nebulous origins aside, it’s easy to see that the place offers a super-solid structure and (appropriate, considering the period of

inception) showcases an interior of beauty rich and rare. After the Second World War, the house served as a refuge for Jewish women. Following that it was divided in to three flats, and then converted back to a single dwelling. When Noleen Glavish and her husband bought the place in 1995 it was a shadow of its hey-day self. The backyard had a base of cracked asphalt, all lights were without fittings and all windows bare of drapery. A godsend, considering various property uses; most fixtures remained untarnished, including the magnificent over-mantels in the two front rooms. The glazed hexagonal dome over the staircase is another fine original feature. “I lived nearby and was looking for something bigger. When this place came up I was delighted. I loved all the off-kilter Federation touches and it felt like a witch’s

house, in a good way. It certainly needed TLC, and don’t even ask about the money,” says Noleen. Rolling sleeves up, the Glavishs took on major renovations. The floor plan was adjusted to suit their lifestyle. Though dark red bricks see it in keeping with the main building, the double garage and loft apartment were built from the ground up where the stables previously stood. Ground level is made up of lounge and dining rooms linked by grand folding doors, a study, a bathroom and a kitchen that opens to the family and meals areas. The second storey adds a family bathroom and three bedrooms, including the main suite. Owing to the front turret, the lounge room has a circular chamber glazed all round to garden outlooks. There’s another in the family area. Noleen commissioned an artisan to make

the reproduction gaslight fittings. Dado in the hallway and beside the staircase has been carefully restored. The main bedroom is at the front of the second storey and opens to the front balcony through French doors. A flow-through chamber introduces the en suite; the walk-in wardrobe has another set of doors to the balcony. As it’s above the lounge room, it has a splendid circular bay window area. Between the residence and the double garage with loft is a private courtyard garden. The elephant-trunked fig tree was rescued by the Glavishs and has flourished under their care. The garage is big enough for two Land Cruisers and the loft studio, with peaked ceiling and skylight, is where Noleen does her picture framing. A bedroom and bathroom here means the space is effectively a self-contained apartment. ■

Buzachero (pictured holding bat, with Djorgonoski) played with Preston last summer and is again this summer after playing in Europe during the winter. Djorgonoski says it’s a bit of “pot luck” with imported players. “You never really know what type of player you’re going to get,’’ he said. ‘‘He might be a great player but not very interactive at training. “But we’ve got really lucky with Bubbie. He has been fantastic – he’s the first on the ground at training and the last to leave. “We hit gold when we got him over. He’s such a great personality and loves to help with the kids and seniors. “And on top of all that, he’s a fantastic baseballer. “His reputation is growing every day and the most important thing I hear from the players is that he keeps the game simple and doesn’t complicate it.” Buzachero also plays with the Melbourne Aces and recently secured a job at Baseball Victoria helping to develop the sport in Melbourne. one-run win over Blackburn on Sunday ensures Preston remains in touch with the top four in an incredibly tight Victorian Summer League baseball season. With five wins from 12 games, Preston sits equal ninth with Malvern, but is just a win behind fourth-ranked Melbourne with 20 games still to play. It is the closeness of the teams that has Preston president Alex Djorgonoski confident of a strong season in division one – and perhaps even March finals glory. “Our players have bonded well and been very competitive against the top sides,” he says. “With the league being the way it is, and there being very little between sides, anything can happen . . . if the boys get a run on, the objective is to finish in the top four. “We play a game where we just keep going; we aren’t really looking at the score even if we are behind. We’ve knocked off a couple of sides that way, because they thought they’d beat us. It’s a good, positive attitude to instil in players.” Preston’s stock rose considerably when it signed Bubbie Buzachero, a right-arm pitcher from Tennessee who signed with Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays, though he never made his major league debut.

Victorian Premier Cricket travelled to country Victoria this week for the Twenty20 Bush Bash. St Kilda, Carlton and Melbourne Uni played two matches each at Bendigo. University struggled all day, losing to both Carlton and St Kilda. Batting at first against Carlton, Uni scored just 4/115, which the Blues chased down in 17.3 overs. St Kilda won the day, however, making 7/123 against Carlton’s 8/120. Richmond, Hawthorn-Monash University and the Camberwell Magpies did battle at Wangaratta, where Richmond notched up two wins. Richmond set Hawthorn-Monash Uni a target of 5/140 in the first game and, despite David Alleyne’s 58, won out, with Allan Wise taking 4/14 in his four overs. Richmond batted second against Camberwell, and took only 16.5 overs to chase down the Magpies’ 103. Northcote, North Melbourne and Prahran travelled north to Barooga, where Prahran picked up two wins. Northcote managed only 78 in reply to Prahran’s 7/146. Marcus Stoinis, who played for Victoria in a Futures League game during the week, took 3/32. Northcote also lost to North Melbourne as the Kangaroos scored at a run a ball, making 6/121. Northcote made 8/109 from 20 overs in reply.
