hen Eliza and John Morley bought their Edwardian house in 2007, they could see immediately it had potential. Although it had undergone a typically unflattering renovation in the 1970s, which had resulted in false ceilings and inadequate living spaces, the house still had many positive attributes – good solid bones, period features, a generous block size and an excellent location. Unlike many enthusiastic renovators, who blindly jump straight into the design process, the Morleys were determined to live in the spaces first. “After living in the house we decided we wanted to make total use of the block,” says Eliza. “We wanted a design extension that would let in as much light as possible and be a great entertaining area for the kids.” continues » P33

Skylight highlight: A natural grey stone, from CDK, is applied throughout the minimalist bathroom. Its textures and imperfections are lit by a skylight. Children’s bedrooms: A colourful painting by Melbourne artist Sarah Hook balances the modern classic furniture pieces such as the Wishbone chair and the Componbilli side table.

… a flexible space for retreat or separation, depending on what the moment dictates
Open plan: The monochromatic interiors are punctuated by bursts of colour – seen in the oversized artwork by Dale Frank, the textured rug by Behruz Studio and flowers by Fleur McHarg. Family affair: Eliza, John and their three daughters, love their beautiful new interiors, which balance classic principles with contemporary flair.

Creating a flexible home for a family that keeps growing during the design process is always tricky, especially when you’re doing the renovation without an architect. But the Morleys had a couple of advantages up their sleeve. As a builder and principal director of Morcon Developments – a high-end house-building company – John has an intuitive understanding of structure and form. Add this to Eliza’s sharp eye for design – she worked for many years in the fashion industry – and what you have is a design-savvy pair who were able to effortlessly inject new life into this period house. Inspired by the couple’s European travels, the interiors of this Malvern house are rich with detail. Avoiding the white, Scandinavian palette that is so often used in period houses, the couple bravely embraced the greys that are more commonly associated with French and Belgian interiors. Pairing this with distressed American-oak floorboards, Luxembourg linen curtains, and textured Belgian sisal carpet, the interiors ooze European chic.
To the right of the unadorned hallway is the couple’s bedroom, en suite and walk-in wardrobe. In an effort to return the house to its former glory, John pulled out false windows and put in large heritage-inspired bay replacements. A window seat below is complemented by beautiful cushions from French textile designer Genevieve Levy, of Manon bis. Opposite the main suite is a sitting room and study, which offers a flexible space for retreat or separation, depending on what the moment dictates. Warm and intimate, this room perhaps best reflects the original intentions of the Edwardian architects. “This is a beautiful room to sit in, because you have an open fireplace and you get this amazing north-face light streaming in through the bay windows. “It is a great aspect of the old house,” says John. Adding warmth are the contrasting material and colour palettes. The rustic timber found in the Graham Geddes light-fitting plays beautifully off the burnt yellows in Graham Fransella’s painting. continues » P34 july 31, 2013 \ The weekly review 33

As you move through the front part of the house, the period Edwardian elements gradually give way to refined modern detailing. The back extension is bright and contemporary, with the living spaces arranged around the kitchen in a relaxed but sophisticated style. The kitchen is particularly handsome, with crisp white cabinetry, Carrara marble benchtops, and a window splashback that infuses the room with greenery. The standout feature here is the dramatically suspended glass rangehood, custom-designed by John. Most of the lower level’s rear wall is made of glass, which slides away with the touch of a button. This seamlessly connects the living area to the garden. Upstairs are bedrooms for the couple’s three daughters – Zoe, 8, Matilda, 6, and Charlotte, 3. Like the rooms below, each of the bedrooms has its own individual quirks and accessories, such as French bed linen, artwork, contemporary bedside tables and vintage timber chairs. Elegant without being ostentatious, pared-back without being minimalist, this Edwardian house is the result of careful consideration and planning. It is warm, contemporary, and simply joyful. \ fcarter@theweeklyreview.com.au get the look » P36

isn’t a game-changer for many people, but for Frank Novembre, the search for a coffee table more than 25 years ago set his life on a new course. Frustrated by the lack of fine furniture in Melbourne, the then-banker was trying to order a coffee table through the catalogue of French brand Grange. When he asked the staff in France if they had an Australian agent, they suggested he take on the role. A trip to France and a containerload of furniture later, he was ready to set up shop as Grange’s Australian agent. His brave move paid off – Domo now has seven shops across the country including the original shop on Camberwell Road, which is run by passionate, knowledgeable sales staff, including Alec Gabbett (pictured).
what’s in store While Novembre originally represented only Grange, Domo now stocks and represents other brands of furniture and homewares, many of them exclusive to Domo in Australia. The shop caters for traditional, classic tastes, as well as contemporary, design-focused modern styles. Pieces range from the practical – such as stackable outdoor furniture by Dedon and modular bookcases by Grange and Marchetti – to the more decorative: think Designers Guild cushions printed with maps of “Lacroix Island” and wall art from Ibride of France depicting portraits of ravens and rabbits in Elizabethan ruffs. who’s visiting Industry types such as architects

and interior designers find inspiration in the extensive, well-curated range, but there’s plenty to tempt others. After years supplying pieces to customers in Camberwell, Hawthorn and beyond, Domo has many regulars, among them long-time clients who are downsizing and second-generation shoppers who remember their parents buying at the shop. \
