on’t tell me we all have to dress in flapper style now? I am always bewildered by the fashion wave created by some new movie tossed like a stone into the pond of popular culture. Often it’s just a wavelet that wets your feet and draws quickly away (Bo Derek’s hair braids from 10, anyone?). Sometimes the moment defines an entire generation, as Diane Keaton did in mismatched suits, vests and ties in Annie Hall, but often these little style surges persist in the most aggravating way. It really was only Madonnna – and only back then – who could pull off the op-shop, sex-pot look of Who’s That Girl, but it didn’t stop a generation of young women, my contemporaries I must confess, sloping about in ra-ra skirts and torn tulle for much longer than good sense or style would suggest. Now, courtesy of Baz Luhrmann’s flashy new version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, we’re all going to get around in drop-waisted skirts, headbands and ropes of pearls. Oh, and yards of (product-placed) Tiffany diamonds … if you can afford them. It’s a funny thing, how the unreal world of cinema

hat a difference 12 months make. David Jones is on track and things are just about blooming marvellous. Last week the prestigious store celebrated its 175th anniversary with all the panache and sophistication one has come to expect from this Australian institution, and its future is indeed looking bright. “The Melbourne market is a key focus for David Jones in our 175th year,” says the company’s regional manager for Victoria, Lyn James. “We have recently launched the new Highpoint store and are looking forward to the Malvern launch later in the year.” In a competitive and fickle market, David Jones has taken up the challenge to expand, revive and renew retail spaces to give customers that something extra that has become synonymous with the store’s heritage. James says ,“this is something we are very proud of”. David Jones has also had a long tradition of supporting Australian designers and this season is no different. A choice of distinct, fresh and proudly Australian brands fills its floors. The brands featured on these pages are not only the hottest in Australia but are also setting trends that are buzzing around the world. This season, invest in metallics, leather and bold prints. Indulge in jewel tones and beautifully embellished sequinned gems. Keep enjoying your well-tailored jackets, pants, bold colours, peplum pieces (just for another season) but store your sky-high platforms, maxi-printed dresses, cropped jackets and tops, and anything too short and too tight. David Jones is a resilient retail juggernaut; it has gone through multiple changes and has always come up smelling sweet with success. Yes, there have been recent ambassadorial changes, but it makes good business sense to revamp and reinvigorate. After all, retail is an ever-changing beast and you have to tame and cajole it if you want to perform, succeed and inspire. David Jones is doing what comes naturally – reviewing, reinventing and celebrating. Here’s to another 175 years. \ dnaidu@theweeklyreview.com.au

f you’ve browsed the French wine aisles at your local wine merchant, chances are you’ve seen, or bought, wines labelled Pays d’Oc. You may have even wondered what the term meant – I know I have. The two words tell us that the wine is a vin de pays – a “country wine”, which is a level above table wine, or vin de table, in French wine hierarchy – and the d’Oc indicates it’s from ) CK the vast LanguedocRoussillon region in south-west France. The French are said to look down on the country wines as being inferior to the appellation contrôlée (AOC) class of wines, such as Bourgogne and Côtes du Rhône, which place strict controls on the way wines can be made and the grapes that may be grown in many French regions. Ignore the honest, often cheap, Pays d’Oc wines at the peril of your drinking pleasure, I say. Languedoc-Rousillon, spanning the Mediterranean coast from the Spanish border through Perpignan and Montpellier to Nîmes, and with 283,300 hectares under vine, is the largest wine region in the world. Travelling through the area, it quickly becomes apparent there isn’t much spare land that’s not planted with vines. It’s France’s final frontier where winemaking is concerned and many top producers from the north are buying land
in the region. French winemakers have told me they make wine in the region because it sets them free from the rigid laws that govern winemaking in other areas, such as Burgundy and Hermitage. This allows some to follow a dream by making wine from a grape they are passionate about, The while others are french look down diversifying and on country adding cheaper brands to their wines portfolios. Thanks to the vin de pays classification, it’s open slather on the different grapes that can be grown in the Languedoc. The new world’s favourite grapes, such as chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and merlot, are represented among the region’s traditional grapes of marsanne, rolle (vermentino), grenache and carignan. There’s more to Languedoc-Rousillon than its Pays d’Oc wines. It also has 18 appellations, which have incredible resources of old vines – many vineyards were planted more than 100 years ago – something that’s rarely found in France’s more exclusive regions. Many of these vineyards are tended by fourth and fifth-generation families – similar to our Barossa. \ bthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au

Melbourne chef and winemaker Adam Foster, who produces wines under the Syrahmi and Foster e Rocco labels, has been making wine in Languedoc-Rousillon’s Coillure appelation near the border with Spain for the past five years. The opportunity came about by accident. Foster was supposed to be helping out in the northern Rhône valley with a highly regarded French winemaker, when timing and bad weather lured him south. “In 2008 I was working at (restaurant) 312 as sommelier and Pierre Gaillard rang me up and asked if I’d like to help out in the northern Rhône. I went over there but arrived a month before vintage and he suggested I head down south and help out there,” says Foster. “Due to bad weather and a poor vintage in the north, I ended up staying there and loving it – so I asked if I could buy some grenache.” Five years on, Foster is in France blending L’Imposteur wines from the 2012 vintage.

Stylish landscaped gardens greet the visitor, with inviting tropical plants and a symmetrical rockery that surrounds a statue. Inside, parents can entertain in the open-plan sitting and dining room with a lampshade-style chandelier. Nearby is a study or fifth bedroom. The rear entertainment zones include the kitchen with granite benchtops and stainless-steel Smeg appliances. The family room with a taupe feature wall opens to an expansive deck, which is partially covered. A path leads out to a water feature and peaceful hammock area. Hedges hide a large lawn perfect for kids’ games. Back inside, stairs lead directly into a big rumpus-cum-study area. French doors reveal the large main bedroom suite with a walk-through wardrobe. The en suite has orange wall tiles, a bidet and a large corner bath. \ MICHELLE OSTROW ZUKERMAN

Our Professional Employment and Situations Vacant columns are reserved for advertisements which carry a SPECIFIC and GENUINE offer of employment. All employment advertisements must state clearly the type of job offered and remuneration offered. (i.e. salary package, retainer plus commission or commission only). "Commission only'' jobs are only accepted in these columns PROVIDED that this is clearly stated in the ad AND the employer is paying Workcover and Superannuation. If not, then these advertisements MUST be placed in an alternate classification such as Self Employment Opportunities. Placing misleading advertisements is an offence against the Competition and Consumer Act and all advertisements are subject to the publisher's approval.
