EDITOR’S DESK It’s one of the great ironies of the modern human condition – the more we embrace technology that connects us with the world 24/7, the more we want to retreat into the private santuary of our own homes. A man’s home might once have been his castle, but these days it’s more a cocoon to nurture and protect from the onslaught of 21st-century life. So we have become a nation of nesters, obssessed with renovations and throw rugs and the latest chic black tapware for the bathroom. If any proof were needed of our interiors infatuation, you need only look at the growing list of celebrities hitching their names to homewares. In our special Home edition this week, we catch up with some of the famous faces designing everything from rugs and sofas to tea sets. We also get the lowdown on the latest looks for inside and out, and how to get them. Enjoy! ●

or any celebrity worth their Manolo Blahniks, it wasn’t so long ago that having their own perfume was the ultimate sign they’d really made it. These days, though, famous faces are just as likely to launch their own homewares collection as they are to lend their name to a signature scent. With the likes of Megan Gale, Miranda Kerr and Rebecca Judd getting in on the homewares act, we caught up with some well-known Aussies who have designs on your home. ● smarinos@theweeklyreview.com.au
MEGAN HESS
M
Megan Hess spends her days in her all-white Melbourne studio using her trusty Montblanc pen, Monty, to create illustrations for leading brands. In 2008, she was asked by author Candace Bushnell to illustrate the re-issue of her bestseller, Sex and the City City. Soon after, major brands began calling. In between commissions for some of the world’s leading fashion houses, Megan has turned her attention to a homewares range that includes cushions, vases, plates and napkins, which sell globally via her website. “I’ve always been passionate about interiors,” Megan says. “No matter where I’ve lived, or my financial circumstances, I’ve made the most of the spaces I’ve lived or worked in. I used to work off my dining room table in a tiny apartment, and I made that space as lovely as I could.” Megan’s homewares have been inspired by her travels, and she always carries a sketchbook. “When you are somewhere you’ve not been before, you see different people and hear different sounds and it switches on a different trail of thought that leads to a new idea,” she says.
(MARTINA GRANOLIC)
egan Hess’s fashion illustrations have a global audience thanks to a client list that includes Montblanc, Fendi, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Cartier, and Valentino. Now she is using her talents to create stylish pieces for homes.
“I design everything myself, sample fillings for cushions and choose the colours and fabrics. I’ll sample 10 different colourways to find the right shade of pink for a cushion. I am a perfectionist.” Recently, Megan was invited to work on a teaware collection for Wedgwood, which has been making fine china and porcelain for more than 200 years. “They wanted to incorporate illustrations of modern tea parties on teaware,” she says. “Working with such history was a joy.”

elbourne’s own queen of ultrafeminine personalised stationery was born in Rome and attended art school in Italy at the age of 13. Cristina Re later studied design at Swinburne University, and began her working life as a photographer before launching her eponymous stationery line.
6 THE WEEKLY REVIEW W \ MARCH 22, 2017
When Cristina decided to open a concept store in Collingwood, selling her personalised stationery, she wanted to create a little piece of Paris. So she opened a cafe in the shop and designed a range of vintage style teaware reminiscent of the most luxurious Parisian salons. “I travelled to France a lot and loved the beautiful patisseries and I created a mini high tea
salon with very French decor,” she says. “Then I designed my own teaware because I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted in Melbourne.” Customers fell in love with the tea cups and saucers in rose pink and gold, so Cristina began producing the range commercially, adding teapots, plates, old-style cake stands and sugar bowls to the range. They are now sold in gift stores around Australia and worldwide. She updates her collections every few months. The latest, Paradise Palms, has a tropical influence, while Cristina’s personal favourite, Crystalline, is inspired by rose quartz. “I follow fashion and look at what is happening in couture and interior design to stay contemporary. It’s all about luxury, high quality and design that will last.” ● » cristinare.com

SHAYNNA BLAZE
BECI ORPIN
he’s the girl next door whose stint presenting The Block has only furthered her passion for interior design. But, as a busy mum to two young daughters, Shelley Craft believes homewares should be all about durability and practicality.
S
haynna Blaze is one busy woman. When she’s not fronting Selling Houses Australia or The Block, she runs a successful interior design Block business, blankcanvas INTERIORS. She also recently launched an online shop, stocking her line of rugs, artworks, furniture and lighting.

Shelley Craft’s interest in home style was sparked early. “Mum was very particular and wouldn’t let us leave home for school if our rooms weren’t tidy and our beds weren’t made. So there was always a real pride of house when I was growing up,” Shelley says. “Mum and dad built two of our family homes in the 1980s, so I was exposed to designing through that.” As a young adult, living in share households, Shelley didn’t pay much attention to interior design. Her interest was rekindled while travelling as a presenter with The Great Outdoors. “We stayed in so many different places [and] I always took great interest in the interiors. I’d love to do an interior design course if I had a moment to study but with two kids and a job that won’t be any time soon.” Still Shelley has found an outlet for her passion, working as an ambassador with Pillow Talk. “I’d love to do a range of cushions and throws with them because they’re an easy way to update your home every season,” she says. Shelley has also worked on a flooring collection for Carpet Court called the Real Living collection. “I like to do things as easily and quickly as possible and within a budget,” she says. “The floor coverings are low-maintenance, eco-friendly and easy to lay. I like the timber look and, living in Byron Bay, I like pale and whiteish laminates. Vinyl is great here because there is so much sand. Shelley describes her own home style as “easy luxury with a coastal tribal feel”. There are items she’s collected on her travels dotted around her house. “It’s not a show home but there is history here,” she says. ●
Before she became one of Australia’s most famous interior designers, Shaynna Blaze had her sights set on a career as an artist. “My aunty was an artist and I wanted to study fine arts before I got into interior design,” she says. “I did a lot of commission pieces for clients initially, but gradually I was taken away from my art because I was so busy with interior design and then TV.” A collaboration with online gallery and homewares store Urban Road rekindled her passion, and she has designed a series of works inspired by nature – from stormy skies to the intricacies of a butterfly’s wing. The artworks are just one aspect of Shaynna’s burgeoning homewares portfolio that includes a lighting range for OneWorld, inspired by a trip to Milan and New York; a beach-inspired range for The Rug Collection; and a furniture collection, made by local company Molmic, which she describes as “classic and timeless”. “Timeless, for me, is a well-worn structured dinner suit or a black-and-white movie. It’s about a chair that you sit in and don’t want to get out of, with strong, simple lines, fine tapered legs and detail in the back,” she says. “Many people have open-plan living and are too scared to put a chair or couch in the centre of a room, so I’ve created chairs and sofas where the details are in the back as much as in the front.” As for her own home style, she says it’s a mix of “formal structure with chaos in between”. “I have a base and I can add a lamp, use a throw and cushion, move a few pieces and change the look of a room within 20 minutes.” A favourite item in her own home is the Cary chair – a 1.5-seat leather chair with an embellished back. “My husband and son rave about it. You can sit in it as a couple, curl up in it alone, or sit with a child and read them a story." ●
Beci Orpin describes herself as a “nester” – an ideal Saturday morning is spent rearranging the furniture in her West Brunswick house. “As a teenager living in a 1940s-style bungalow in Kew East, I was desperate for a warehouse-style bedroom,” she says. “I ripped up my carpets but my parents wouldn’t let me polish the floorboards so I had bare boards and a double bed on a simple base and a clothing rack. And I had lots of collections of things on the wall – I remember lots of Coca-Cola memorabilia.” Beci now lives in a double-storey Victorian terrace. “Inside it’s quite eclectic and I’m certainly not a minimalist. When I see something I like, I buy it,” she says. One of her most recent acquisitions was a green and pink vintage Argentinian rug bought on her travels. After working as creative director with the ARRO Home online store for three years, designing linens, quilt covers, rugs, kitchenware and tableware in bold colours and patterns, Beci’s focus is now on home projects anyone can try. Sunshine Spaces shows readers how to make natural dyes, press flowers, make a macrame chair and whip up some outdoor cushions, among other home-grown crafts. “I recently tried natural dyeing using acorns and that was a lot of fun because I had no idea how it would work out,” Beci says. ●

WHAT’S COOKING? BRENDAN BALE Talks kitchens with our favourite TV chefs TA S I A & G R A C I A Since winning My Kitchen Rules last year, sisters Tasia and Gracia Seger have built a thriving catering business, held a pop-up kitchen at Prahran restaurant Middletown and launched their homemade Tasia & Gracia satay sauce – using their parents’ Templestowe home as a business base.
TASIA & GRACIA SEGER
(MICHAEL RAYNER)
What’s your favourite feature in the kitchen? T: “Our kitchen has a dark marble benchtop, which I love because you can get great food shots. My sister and I make a lot of videos, so the kitchen has to look good when we’re cooking.” Favourite dish to cook at home? T: “One of my signature dishes is Singaporean chilli crab with rice and mantou.” G: “Mine is a traditional Indonesian fried chicken dish called ayam goreng. It reminds me of visiting my grandmother in Indonesia.” What can’t you live without? T: “I love my KitchenAid mixer. It’s deep purple like a boysenberry, so I called it Berry. I need a lot of dough when I make bao, so I use it to speed up the process.”
G: “I can’t live without my hand mixer. It’s like a mini food processor, but it’s much handier. I use it for spice bases and sauces.” What do you always have in your fridge or pantry? T: “Rice is one of our staples, so when it’s running low, mum or one of us always tops it up. And there’s always a stock of chilli.” G: “We make sure we always have eggs. It means I can whip up a nice Thai omelette whenever I want.” Anything you’d change about your kitchen? T: “I love the kitchen in the film It’s Complicated. It’s rustic and open with marble benches and a lot of white. ” G: “Everyone always talks about wardrobes for clothes and shoes, but I want a walk-in pantry instead.” Tasia and Gracia will host a cooking demonstration at Box Hill Central Fresh Food Market on April 8, as part of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. melbournefoodandwine.com.au tasiaandgracia.com @tasia.seger \ @gracia.seger

The season five MasterChef winner is busy shooting the second series of her Network 10 cooking show My Market Kitchen with friend and fellow MasterChef alumnus, Lynton Tapp. In her spare time, Emma holds cooking demonstrations focusing on sustainability for municipal councils across Melbourne. She’s also an ambassador for Queen Victoria Market.
Melbourne midwives and best friends Karen Gawne and Ros Waters are battling it out on the current season of My Kitchen Rules. They’re also raising awareness about the importance of healthy eating during pregnancy.
Favourite kitchen feature? “I have beautiful glossy cabinetry from Scavolini in Richmond, made in Italy from recycled materials. I also love my Smeg stand mixer, which is great for making pavlova and bread. It takes out all of the grunt work.” Favourite dish to cook at home? “My default for parties is pavlova. They were just so out of fashion in the ’90s, so I used to make them ironically. But now they’ve really made a comeback and everyone loves them. I put rosewater into the base, make a pistachio mascarpone cream and smash pomegranate all over it.”
(MICHAEL RAYNER)
EMMA DEAN
Favourite kitchen feature? K: “My Technika freestanding stainless-steel gas oven, which has six hotplates on top. When we renovated about 12 years ago, we built the kitchen around it.”
EMMA DEAN
Can’t live without? K: “My Wusthof and Mundial knives. When you’re finely slicing and dicing food, sharp knives make it much easier. I use them a lot for baking and stir fries.” R: “My Kenwood stick blender, it’s great for chopping fiddly things like garlic, chilli and shallots.”

Can’t live without? “A Microplane grater, a brass mortar and pestle from Bangladesh and my beautiful Le Thiers knife that has a juniper wood handle. A strong, sharp knife makes my job easier.” What do you always have in your fridge or pantry? “I’ve been loving kimchi from The Fermentary in the Macedon Ranges. I always have a jar of it in my fridge. I also can’t live without eggs from my mum and dad’s farm. Luckily mum always brings me some when she visits. Eggs are a great snack and fantastic to cook with.”
Favourite dish to cook at home? K: “I like to experiment with different versions of tiramisu. My favourite is the lamington one, in which I use a chocolate instead of coffee, with a raspberry coulis and mascarpone filling.” R: “I love cooking our beef cheek ragout. Karen has a pressure cooker, which makes it easier. We also like to experiment with ice-cream, made with real juice and a lot of eggs.”

Evolution \ “In Europe the kitchens are smaller and treated more like freestanding furniture items and can take a more playful palette,” says Kestie. In Australia, “you’ll see it feeding through in hospitality to residential”. How to pull the style together \ Always work with a neutral base for larger joinery items and play with colour in the details or styling elements. One of our kitchens was inspired by the colour palette of the Beverly Hills Hotel. Essential elements \ + Pastel palettes mixed with traditional hues. + Be bold, be brave with colour; try using in smaller details for a pop of colour. + Treat joinery elements as furniture. » kestielanestudio.com

Injecting unusual colours to highlight particular areas is particularly on trend in Europe, and will have a significant influence in home interiors here. “It is the mix of an unexpected colour palette,” says designer Kestie Lane, whose award-winning interior designs include surprising mash-ups such as blues and dusty pinks. In kitchens, she says, the effect might be tempered with playful colour in joinery pulls, or shadowline and internal detailing. “You open up a cupboard and you get a surprise colour.” ●
Best tip \ For those shy about making such bold statements, use colour as an accent or in styling accessories and artwork.

SAMMY J
E
ven before the federal police arrived to search the attic of the Northcote home award-winning comic Sammy J shares with his wife Hannah and their two young daughters, he knew it was a special space. Why is the attic your favourite place? I am not a hoarder, but I am a chronicler. I wrote diaries from age 10 to 20 and they are all up there in boxes, along with other stuff like my old school work and my Phantom comics, because we don’t have a lot of storage space. Every time I go up there to get the portacot or a costume or something, I get distracted and start reading, and half an hour will go by.
(MICHAEL RAYNER)
Any future plans for the space? I toyed with the idea of setting up some sort of writing station, but I do think that would start bordering on Quasimodo-like behaviour. My daughters already think of it as a magical space, because when daddy goes up there he always comes back with something from the 1990s. Malcolm Turnbull, Bill Shorten and all the other puppets from Playground Politics also live up there. Why did police search your attic? That I can’t tell you without ruining my new show. You will just have to come and see it. ● SARAH HARRIS » Truth is way more outrageous than fiction in Sammy J’s 2017 MICF show Hero Complex, Victoria Hotel, 215 Little Collins Street, city. MARBLE This year it’s all about marble, marble and more marble in the bathroom, says Bane Suboticki, of builders BMF Construction. “Bathrooms are now one of the first spaces to be considered and designed, and are becoming more luxurious and sanctuary-like, with statement features in materials, accessories and finishes,” he says. ● Evolution \ Once revered by early Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures for its refined look, marble is today prized for its versatility and tactile strength.
(DAVID HICKS DESIGN)
How to pull the style together \ Use large expansive sheets of marble across various surfaces to create a unified space. Essential elements \ + For a modern look, complement with natural materials such as wood, leather and steel; + Team the marble with statement mirrors and lighting as sculptural elements to celebrate opulence; + The more character-filled the stone’s lines, the more texture it suggests. Best tip \ New digital technologies combine with handcrafting to create contemporary, unusual shapes – update the look with clean, geometric lines. » bmfconstruction.com.au

As busy lifestyles and technology consume more of our time, we’re placing increasing importance on wellness and the sanctuary our homes provide. “For me, the bathroom has always been a place of refuge, relaxation and solitude,” says Michael Drescher, associate director of DKO Architecture. “It’s a space where you feel protected and comfortable.” “In designing residential bathrooms, we look to restaurants and hotels for inspiration, as they create theatre and evoke emotion. So be brave in your material choices.” ●
Natural materials survive all seasonal trends, according to bathroom and kitchen specialists E&S – and the leading material is timber. “Timber gives warmth and character to any room. Timber cabinets in the bathroom or kitchen are timeless and can be perfectly paired with metallic-coloured tapware. The earthy tones of the timber and the warmth of the metallic finishes create a richness.” ●
Essential elements \ + Mix organic natural stones with the strong linear characteristics of tiles and simplify the tonal palette in order to create striking areas of interest; + Achieve the mood you’re after with tapware and accessories – be it industrial and moody aged iron or luxurious and elegant organic copper; + Savvy lighting choices allow you to create a luxe, invigorative daytime space, which transforms into a calming sanctuary at night.

How to pull the style together \ Adding decorative pieces, such as hand-woven plant pots or handmade bowls, will play on the room’s natural textures. The Victorian Government is building bigger, better trains here in Melbourne as part of the largest transformation in our train network’s history. The new longer trains will mean more room for passengers and a better ride on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines, but to run them we need to extend station platforms and upgrade power and signaling. S
tand-up comic, radio and TV presenter Dave Hughes has spent a lot of time chilling in green rooms waiting for the show to go on. Now he has his very own at the new St Kilda home he shares with his wife Holly, their three children and dog Barkly. Why is the courtyard your favourite place? We used to live in an 1860s terrace, which was a beautiful old house but it totally missed the light. When we built this place, the big thing was to have a courtyard that captured the light. Most days you will find me out there working, just tapping away on my laptop. What’s the best feature? Apart from the light, the Virginia creeper, which dominates and hangs right down to the table, so it really is a green room.
(MICHAEL RAYNER)
Is the courtyard used by the rest of the family? We had 50 people out there for Christmas lunch, which was a massive production. The kids are allowed to draw on the walls and Barkly likes to hang out with me, too. Anything you’d change? When it rains you have to come inside, so some sort of covered area might be worth thinking about. Also sometimes the bees take over the creeper. ● SARAH HARRIS » Hughesy’s 2017 Melbourne International Comedy Festival show Deluded is at the Athenaeum Theatre, March 30-April 22. GROWING PAINS WHEN you outgrow your house, is it better to renovate or rebuild? melissa Heagney investigates
W
hen your home becomes a squeeze thanks to a growing family, or is so outdated it’s in dire need of resuscitation, there are several options. But how to decide whether it’s best to rebuild, renovate or move house? We asked the experts what homeowners should consider before they make a decision. ●
DR ANDREW WILSON Domain housing market expert
When selling and buying, you’re only really thinking about the value of the land – land is what buyers and sellers negotiate on. The value of the bricks and mortar on the land only rises by the rate of inflation each year. As land prices rise, the question of whether to rebuild or renovate becomes more about what you want from
your home. Some people want a new home and some a mix of old and new. Knocking down and rebuilding means you have significant building costs. However, you’re really not at risk of overcapitalising while the value of the land keeps rising – although how much it rises will obviously depend on the area you’re in. There is a trend to build new – particularly in suburbs where there are large blocks with older houses, in municipalities such as Stonnington, Boroondara and Bayside, as well as in some of the northern and south-eastern suburbs. The cost of a complete rebuild can be a lot more than a renovation and can take a lot longer to complete – up to a year – whereas renovations can be quicker and might not necessarily mean a move to another house while the work is in progress. If your land is worth $1 million or more, then there’s a growing argument to rebuild rather than renovate, particularly because the higher land price gives you an incentive to stay where you are. If you sell and move, there are a lot of costs, such as stamp duty and real estate agent’s fees, that you have to pay. ● Revitalised: Lisa and Ian Sossen (with Ethan, Hayley, Olivia and dog Daisy) have just renovated their home in North Caulfield. LISA SOSSEN Home renovator
One of the reasons we needed a new home was because we have three teenagers and we had one bathroom for them to share – we couldn’t have them fighting over one bathroom. Initially we wanted to buy, and spent four years looking at auctions, but we couldn’t find anything that suited our needs for space. We compared rebuilding against renovating or buying and it really came down to the fact that any place we could buy we would have to spend money fixing up. A rebuild didn’t make sense because our (unrenovated) house had everything we needed – it just needed a freshen-up and a rejig. We created more space within our existing walls with a design that used the space better. We were smart about the design, so while it is compact it still feels spacious. We almost gutted the whole house, but we were very lucky because my parents had just built a new home and they were away while the renovations were happening. So we were able to live in their house and we didn’t have the extra cost of renting somewhere else to live. ●
Women in Business Luncheon
Renovating your home will add value, provided it is well designed and executed. The number of bedrooms is an important factor in the valuation of a home. Then there are the aesthetics of maintaining the streetscape and residential character while improving functionality. When renovating, you can keep what you like and change what you don’t like. The most popular design feature people want in a renovation nowadays is open-plan living flowing to an outdoor space and easy access to gardens and garden views. If the block can accommodate it, ground-floor extensions are always popular, but if you have limited space, second storey additions can be a great option, and mean you can retain the garden so your kids have room to be kids. The timeframe of a renovation depends on the complexity of the project, but most of Supa Group’s extensions take between five and seven months from start to finish. Additional time is needed for planning and contract stages, which can take between two and six months, depending on whether council planning approval is required. It’s important to think through the project carefully before you start and to completely understand the plans and specifications. Make sure the building contract is explained properly so there are no misunderstandings. ● » supagroup.com.au

AN AUSSIE CLASSIC 6 WAVENHOE AVENUE, ST KILDA EAST EAST, 3183

f you feel an urge to snigger on entering this property, it might be because it once belonged to the mother of TV personality Graham Kennedy. That was three owners ago, and what’s been done since in terms of enhancement is no laughing matter. The vendors bought it in 2014 and promptly began extensions and renovations. A landscape builder and an experienced renovator, they pooled skills on this project while calling it home. Spatial preferences were well considered in reconfiguring the floor plan, with the three-bedroom option winning out over a potentially compromised four. Walls came down at the rear of the house to make way for open-plan living, and glazing back here was maximised to capitalise on backyard views. Concluding with a vogueish makeover, the vendors transformed the ambience from tired-period to peppycontemporary. All buildings in the quiet street have heritage overlays, so you’ll not see any inappropriate development going up. Due to these restrictions, the facade of the 1920s house has been painted in approved tones, and refitted with windows not a centimetre smaller, nor larger, than their predecessors.
MELBOURNE’S BEST
PROPERTIES
Take the bluestone-paved path to the side porch, where the old front gate now hangs as retro art. Inside, high ceilings rule, and all but the bathrooms have engineered-oak floors. Colour co-ordinated tiles in the bathrooms and kitchen further the consistent aesthetic. The huge main bedroom has loop-pile carpet, an open fireplace, walk-in wardrobe and dazzling en suite. Both the en suite and the main bathroom have magnificent tubs. The second bedroom – with open fireplace, a wall of built-in wardrobes and leadlight windows – is similarly spacious. While the kitchen, dining and living areas are open plan, two cathedral ceilings lend definition overhead. Under one, the lounge has a gas fireplace. Under the other, the kitchen and dining areas open to the entertainer’s terrace. The kitchen excels for form and function, and the black Smeg Victoria double oven is downright sexy. The bluestone terrace has a backdrop of lush greenery. Decking surrounds the kidney-shaped pool, and you can swing into the double carport from Alma Road. ● KAY KEIGHERY property@domain.com.au

The side driveway leads to a double garage. White roses are planted in beds across the front lawn. With a revitalised period allure, the linked lounge and dining rooms have Axminster carpet, highlighted cornices, leadlight windows and decorative ceilings. There’s a fireplace in brick surrounds in the lounge. The huge main bedroom comes with an en suite. The second and third bedrooms share the rear of the house with the main bathroom and family room. It was cutting-edge in its day, and this recently refurbished house still outshines many others for liveability and laissez-faire style. Architect David. C. Moore designed the house in 1963, and the update by Conti Architects pays homage to all initial intentions. The single-level interior extends deep into the long block, with a terraced garden on the north side. Behind the discreet facade, the spaces that unfold are bathed in natural light and bestowed with distinguishing features. The lounge and dining room has bespoke joinery, exposed support beams and polished concrete floors. Opposite its glass wall opening to the terrace, there’s a french fireplace against a wall painted to 3D effect. The kitchen has new Miele appliances and stone benchtops. The adjoining family area also opens to the terrace, where stone paving and greenery set the scene for entertaining. ● KAY KAY KEIGHERY
