charts, today’s music stars have been reduced to mere passing sound bytes, downloaded, deleted and forgotten with a careless swipe of a smartphone. It’s hard to imagine, for example, anyone still singing along to Twenty One Pilots in 40 years’ time, the way my generation still belts out the chorus of Khe Sanh with the slightest provocation. Even those of us who weren’t big Cold Chisel fans have somehow absorbed their music into our DNA. And the vision of a screaming, bandana-clad Jimmy Barnes is a defining image of the era. Almost four decades on, Barnesy has lost little of his rock god status – he’s still selling out concerts and now drawing crowds to a series of spoken-word gigs. There’s also a cracking new autobiography. Be sure to read our revealing interview inside – they just don’t make ‘em like that any more. ●

THIS BOY’S LIFE 6 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ NOVEMBER 9, 2016
PETER WILMOTH GETS TO KNOW THE KID WHO GREW UP TO BE JIMMY BARNES
T
he last time I hung with Jimmy Barnes was when I cadged a lift with him to an outdoor gig he was headlining. It was the quintessential rock moment: while Jimmy bounced around excitedly in the back seat of the limo, fans walking to the show peered in to see if it really was Jimmy in there. When they saw that mischievous face framed by the famous flop of tousled hair, they smiled and pointed and waved. And Jimmy smiled and pointed and waved right back. At that moment, while presenting to the world as the ultimate happy-go-lucky rock’n’roll wild man, living a life most young people would kill for, Jimmy had inside him a million demons stemming from a youth marked by unspeakable violence, poverty, alcoholism and many bashings – which he both received and dished out. Now he has brought those demons into the open with his new autobiography, Working Class Boy Boy. “I went through different emotions,” he says of writing the book. “I’d write stuff down and I’d be teary or I’d be angry. I loved my parents and they tried the best they could and I’m very forgiving of them, but sometimes I’d finish a bit and I’d be really angry because they shouldn’t have let us be treated that way. “Quite often I’d be lying in bed after writing and it would trigger off all these other memories, which led to another and another … It was quite taxing, but at the same time every step of the way I felt that weights were being lifted off me.” The poverty, violence and neglect Jimmy suffered as a child are shocking. At Christmas, he writes, “we didn’t want all the toys in the world. All we wanted was for them to love us and make us feel safe”. Now 60, Jimmy is in a great place. He still rips the room apart on stage, but at home he is the happy and healthy family man, free of the burdens of hell-raising. He doesn’t need to be the wild man any more. He exorcised most of his demons writing the book and is now preparing for a national tour of spoken-word performances. There may be a three-day growth, but it’s not cheap wine any more, rather a quiet whisky before bed. Jimmy says the words poured out of him while writing the book. “I’d spent a lifetime pushing them down and trying to suppress them. It was like a festering wound and I had to open it up to the air to let it heal. When I finished writing it I literally thought, ‘I could rip this up now, it’s done its job, I’ve acknowledged it’. “There is a lot of stuff that people are still going through out there. I’ve been doing book signings around the country and so many people are stopping me and saying, ‘Hey, I’m living in this now, what can I do, how can I talk about this?’. I’m telling people to get professional help and, if you’re in an abusive situation, get away from it. “It’s the sort of stuff that has to come out and that Australia as a society has to have a conversation about. There’s a lot of domestic abuse in this country, but people don’t talk about it. It’s kept in the dark.
Top of the class: Jimmy at Mansfield Park Primary School in Adelaide. (SUPPLIED)
Maybe my book shines a little bit of light on it, and the more light you can shine on this stuff the better.” He begins the book with his alcohol and violence-soaked early youth in Glasgow, Scotland, surrounded by aimless, drunk adults, and later in the tough Adelaide satellite city of Elizabeth, to which his family migrated in 1962. “There was a lot of drinking in the house,” he writes, “and with that came a lot of violence and abuse; not necessarily directed at us, but every punch and threat that mum and dad threw around hit each of us as if we’d been thrown against the wall.”
A
buse and trauma “became normalised for us”, he says. “We would climb out the windows, run away, block things out of our heads. As kids we were more afraid our parents were going to die than we were going to die. It put me in a lot of bad situations. It put me in a lot of places where I really could have been killed. “By the time I was 17 and left, I didn’t reflect on much of that stuff ever again, until recently. I was just glad to be out of there. I did everything to stop myself thinking about it. And that includes drinking myself to death nearly. I was very lucky to get through it.” Jimmy, top of the class and soccer captain, lost interest in school because he was distracted by the abuse. “School was a place where I could go and the teachers liked me because I could work hard, because I was interested. But eventually you get to a point where you go to school and your feet are freezing cold and wet because you haven’t got decent shoes, and you’re hungry and your parents are fighting at home so you’re worried and I just couldn’t even concentrate … that to me was a really sad time, especially looking back on it.” Eventually his mother left the family in 1965, when Jimmy was nine. “The last bit of light in our lives was put out that day,” he writes. “She told us she wouldn’t leave us. She loved us too much.” Jimmy and his siblings later resettled with their mother and her new husband, Reg Barnes.
Jimmy writes warmly about Reg, who came to have a fatherly role in his life (Jimmy’s father died 12 years ago). Reg, who died in 2011, told the young Jimmy there was an angel looking after him. “Well, he was that angel,” Jimmy says. “Most of the adults who spoke to us said, ‘Shut up, get away’. Reg was the only one who looked me in the eye and said, ‘What’s going on, are you OK?’. He was a caring soul. I owe a lot to Reg. He was a shining light in my life.” I ask Jimmy how his youth shaped him. “People who have come from that sort of poverty and that sort of abuse and trauma tend to try and overachieve,” he says. “When I was a young fella I got in gangs, I could fight better than most people. As I got older I could drink more, I could sing louder, I wanted to be a successful singer. Without knowing it I was trying to distance myself from that past as much as I could and become as successful as I could. “I guess it made me tough. It made me strive for stuff that was out of my reach. The way I was treated as a child, the abuse, the trauma, and the love from our siblings, the way we cared for each other, everything in that life seemed like a perfect melting pot to make a rock’n’roll singer. “At 17, all I wanted to do was be wild and free and to make people like me, and I was prepared to do anything, jump around and be crazy, to do it. “Unfortunately I realised if I drank loads and went crazy and played up and screamed and jumped off things, people liked the band. It appeared to me that the more I did that, the more people liked us. So that made me more self-destructive.” There was the vicarious thrill of watching Cold Chisel’s lead singer being so wild, but there was a huge cost to him. “One of the things I am thankful for from my parents is strong genes. I am tough. When I go and have a physical now, I can’t believe, after the life I’ve led, the doctors say I’m so healthy. “I had people dropping like flies around me because I could just outlast everybody. In the end it wasn’t really about having a good time, it was to numb and to stop thinking. When I didn’t drink and when I didn’t take drugs and when I stood still and stopped for a second, the stuff from the past would start to come back to me and it was haunting me. So I constantly moved, constantly drank, to stop feeling, to stop any sort of feeling.” Jimmy’s mother Dot died a few months ago, aged 83, the day Jimmy was sent the final edit of the book. “At that point I was feeling sad and I wanted to take everything out I’d written about her but it wouldn’t have been honest.” He spoke to his siblings about the book but not to his mother “because she was guilt-ridden”. “She was like me, she would have blocked it out as though it had never happened.” His siblings were shocked at his revelations in the book but also grateful. “Dorothy and Linda thanked me for writing it. It’s something that twists you inside if you don’t get it out.” After years of drug and alcohol abuse,

He’s been my confidante, my friend, my co-conspirator in all the stuff I’ve done. I couldn’t have done without him and people who work with him. LIVE MUSIC PUBS \ We would play eight gigs a week in Melbourne, three on a Saturday night. Croxton Park, Bombay Rock. We used to play Bananas in St Kilda at three in the morning. The Melbourne music scene in the 1970s and early ’80s shaped and moulded Cold Chisel into one of the best rock’n’roll bands in the world. STATION HOTEL \ PRAHRAN I’d go and see The Dingoes playing there and would be inspired to play rock’n’roll music. ●
Jimmy says he is better than he’s ever been. “I’m very good. I went to rehab in 2001 and [later] had bouts where it was good and bad, but I had about eight years where I was very clean. I can now sit in front of the TV with my feet up and watch the news and have a whisky before I go to bed, whereas before I never drank for the taste, I would drink to get hammered and to forget. Now that’s the last thing I want to do.” Music, which is the basis of his next book, helped save his life. “In the midst of all this chaos and drinking and fear and shame, music was the thing that was the light for me. The stuff that was killing me, the only time it ever got vented without me knowing it, expressed itself in songs. That was the therapy for me, to let them out.” That famous screaming: was it letting go of some demons? “I reckon it was primal therapy. I can peel the paint off walls. I’m a good singer, I can sing well and I know I can scream better than most people in the world. Part of it was my way of letting out that anger.” ● pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au » Working Class Boy By Jimmy Barnes (Harper Collins) $45 » Working Class Boy: An Evening of Stories and Song. THE VINE
Ask the wine guy I recently bought a wine aerator, Q costing just a few dollars. Do they actually make a difference to the

bouquet and flavour or are they just a gimmick?
Most wines, especially reds, benefit from a little air. A quick splash into a decanter or a pour through an aerator really does breathe life into wine. Doing this won’t turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse, but can help open up wines and soften their tannins – important for young, tannic wines that would really benefit from a few years’ mellowing in a cool cellar. ● GOT A QUESTION EMAIL \

d’Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2013 (McLaren Vale) $65; 14.6%
Wirra Wirra The Angelus Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (McLaren Vale) $70; 13.5%
The best-known of d’Arenberg icons, this is a wine I look forward to tasting each year. This year it’s rich and brooding, with blackberry, cassis and dark cherry flavours. There’s loads of earthy complexity, too. It’s bright and concentrated, rather than thick and full-on, with strong, sandy tannins that unfurl with time in the glass. ●
Here’s a wine with a long life ahead of it. It’s immediately appealing, with pencil, blackberries, blueberry, tobacco and liquorice. There’s a hefty set of tannins and lots of concentrated, medium-bodied flavour. Right now it’s best to drink alongside food to help with those tannins. In my case it was a roast loin of saltmarsh lamb. ●

De Bortoli Woodfired Shiraz 2015 (Heathcote) $25; 14.5%
Skillogalee Basket Pressed Shiraz 2013 (Clare Valley) $28; 13.7%
Heathcote’s a region that does big, balanced reds better than most and this is sourced from vineyards in Heathcote’s north. Here’s a prime example, with rich, earthy plum and dark berry flavours with spices and nutty oak in the background. It’s dense and concentrated, with plush, food-friendly tannins – this wine is marketed as being great with a steak – but is bright, juicy and easy to drink. ●
There’s some detailed winemaking going on here: 14 grape parcels, each matched to a style of oak barrel that suited them, were made into individual wines before being blended into a single wine. Bursting with blackberries and dark cherries, this is rich and complex. ●

THE VERDICT
f you’re a seasoned traveller who’s been around the track, where do you instinctively avoid dining out? Tourist sites. There’s usually a strict radius involved and the further out you go – into some dingy hole in the wall you’d never hear about (but for their aggressive Yelp policy) – the better the meal you’ll have. Yet sometimes, those holes in the wall are literally just holes and, albeit rarely, those rooms with a view can really take your breath away. “Get to the point, Alice,” I hear you say. “Exactly.” Once you’re done feeling like an F1 driver on the Albert Park track, get yourself upstairs to The Point for the sort of romantic meal that’s usually reserved for Christmas movies. Andy Harmer’s food, a polished play on local ingredients with Euro technique (try the barbecue bugs with brown butter emulsion), is enhanced by the city’s lights twinkling on the lake, a comprehensive cheese cart (complete with tete de moine, shaved into ‘carnations’ tableside), and a 20-year-old wine collection, so you can drink Grange and Chateau d’Yquem by the glass. The roasted apple souffle with cinnamon ice-cream, like a cloud of apple pie, makes this a destination worth racing to. ● aliceinframes@theweeklyreview.com.au

haun Micallef is always looking for a challenge. Over the past 20 years, he’s starred in an extraordinary stash of films and TV shows, had a crack at radio and written a book or three. As he puts it, he gets bored very easily. This month, he’s doing something new, making his Melbourne Theatre Company debut as one half of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple. “I think it’s important to put myself in front of a real audience every now and again so that I don’t become too used to the slightly easier laughs you get from a TV audience,” Shaun says. “Just to retrain my muscles. Everything I do on television is a muscle memory of that. If I abandoned it completely, I think I’d be abandoning the reason I do it.” Written in 1965, the play has enjoyed endless revivals alongside film and television adaptations. It sees neatness freak Felix move in with his slobbish pal Oscar after splitting from his wife. As funny as the script is, the play stands or falls on
the strength of the rapport between the two leads. Given he’s been paired with long-time collaborator Francis Greenslade, Shaun says chemistry won’t be a problem. “We met when we were 18 at university. We’re born of the same pressures and influences. When I perform with him, he knows what I’m going to do and I know what he’s going to do. If he’s doing the trick, he knows that I’m there to catch him.” That said, each of them assumed they would be the one to play Felix. “We both thought we were the neat one and the other was the slob,” Shaun admits. Although the new production remains set in the ’60s, it acknowledges that gender roles have changed over the past 50 years. “Felix was always presented as the odd character, the one who comes into this world of card-playing blokes and can’t function like a man. I think the world has caught up to Felix and he’s become a little more relatable. Oscar is seen as the dinosaur. So the dynamic has changed, but it still works.” ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au » The Odd Couple, MTC, opens November 10 Tickets from $85, mtc.com.au

Having made her triumphant return to the big screen, Bridget returns to print in this sort-of spin-off novel. Oddly, the new book shares little more than its title with the film. For one thing, Patrick Dempsey’s character is nowhere to be seen, while Hugh Grant is reinstated as the possible daddy of Miss Jones’s bub. These differences ensure the novel is its own beast, with Fielding on fresh and funny form. ●

Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders \ DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital (Warner)
There’s an ever-expanding range of animated Batman movies, most of them as grim and adolescent as the live-action version. This one bucks that trend by resurrecting the camp 1960s TV series for a jolly romp voiced by original stars Adam West and Burt Ward. It’s suitably daft and self-aware (our heroes are so incorruptible they abandon a chase for fear of jaywalking), if not as playful as I wanted it to be. ● MB BATMAN: RETURN OF THE CAPED CRUSADERS

SHE’S A LOCAL HERO BECAUSE …
While processing the devastating diagnosis of mitochondrial disease for her son, Nadja began raising funds for the Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation and has raised awareness and more than $80,000.
(SCOTT McNAUGHTON)
N
adja Danger’s 20-month-old son Luca was given the devastating diagnosis of mitochondrial disease before his first birthday last year. The chronic illness affects the mitochondria – tiny organelles found in almost every cell in the body – and causes physical, developmental and cognitive disabilities for which is there is no cure. “It was a real shock to the system because most children die prematurely of the disease,” says Nadja. “I started researching and came across the Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation, and through that found support groups and a lot of information.” Nadja says locating other parents whose children also had the disease and having the support of the AMDF were crucial to navigating what the diagnosis meant for her family of four and particularly for her son. “It is so important because no one really understands unless you’re in that situation,” she says. “And the foundation is just amazing. They care about you and call up to find out you’re doing, how’s Luca doing; they hold information days around the country for family and people affected by it.”

By January 2016, Nadja was trying to work out what she could do for Luca’s first birthday. “He wasn’t playing with toys or anything, so we decided to ask our friends and family to donate money to the foundation rather than give us gifts,” she says. Soon Nadja’s local soccer club, the Essendon Royals, got on board, throwing a big party at the club on Luca’s birthday. Nadja raised $58,000 for the foundation. “When a child is involved a lot of people tend to be in shock,” Nadja says. “Not many people know about mitochondrial disease, and I think if anything we’ve raised a lot of awareness about it, through Facebook, Twitter and in the local community. Even if people didn’t know me they just threw money towards it.” Nadja just participated in The Bloody Long Walk, a 35-kilometre challenge organised by the AMDF to raise further funds to put towards the foundation’s patient support, research and education and awareness programs. At the time of writing, Luca’s Legends had raised $22,326. “We’ll do it again this February for Luca’s second birthday,” Nadja says. ● VIRGINIA MILLEN

SALES PITCH A concept store that challenges perceptions around what makes a great “carry”.
Who’s behind the counter? Luke Cahill met the founders of online store Carryology (which is dedicated to quality bags of all kinds) early this year after a stint working in the US consulting with businesses that want to move into retail. They decided to pool their skills and open a bricks-and-mortar store in Melbourne. “Carryology has always been a passion project,” Luke says. “It has a growing online community, but the founders also wanted to have a physical expression and connection with the community.” What’s in store? While the website features reviews for all things carry-able – luggage, backpacks, wallets, cases, duffels and more – the store offers a hand-picked selection of the very best of what’s online, many of which are not available anywhere else in Australia. Shop for brands including Teranishi Studio, Everyman, Mystery Man, Incase and more. “We cover quite a broad scope, stocking bags for work, study, outdoor, travel – and within each group there are subgroups, including photography, bike, ski,” Luke says. “All of the items in store have passed a set of criteria that give customers confidence that their purchase is the best solution for them.”
Our pick The Teranishi Venture Lt pack features a roll-top design and a sleek profile. $530.
Who’s buying? “The exciting thing is it’s not just been the carry geeks who read the blog coming into the store,” Luke says. “We wanted to create a space for everybody and we are getting all sorts of people with unmet carry needs. There are people travelling from interstate, and internationally as well as locals.” ● VIRGINIA MILLEN

It’s also a genuine pleasure to drive. It feels very solid and the ride quality is fabulous. There’s lots of power and it’s delivered very smoothly. The interior fit and finish is excellent with generous leather and rich, tactile surfaces. The electronics take a little learning but are essentially intuitive. The boot is generous and there are lots of little delights you discover as you drive, including a warning when you’re exceeding the speed limit. boot. The badge is the only Hyundai identification the Genesis gets and lots of owners are removing it. In America Hyundai is taking it off, pitching Genesis as a separate brand like Toyota did with Lexus. Without that badge it’s easy to mistake this for an uber-luxury European limo. It looks great, it has everything and the ride quality is sensationally good. And with a surprisingly quiet cabin the Genesis is a great cruiser. The surprise is that the handling isn’t bad either, only getting a bit roly-poly when pushed hard. The big V6 has lots of lazy power with very linear delivery and the auto is beautifully seamless. I’m happy with anything that’s comfortable and has a good stereo and the system in the Genesis is a ripper. And so are the warranty and service conditions. If I had $90,000 for a car I’d have this in a flash, and if I only wanted to spend $66,000 I’d have the standard model.

CLEAN \ Clean that kitchen like it’s never been cleaned before. “Have it sparkling,” says agent Helena Fantela from Harcourts, “so it looks and smells fantastic”. Then declutter – banish those fridge magnets and toasters. Potential buyers want to see the space on offer. EXPERT ADVICE \ One of the fastest ways to eat into your potential profit is to overcapitalise. Don’t. Get your selling agent to advise before you begin. “He or she can look through the home objectively and tell you where you need to spend money to get best value,” says Helena. BE NEUTRAL \ Buyers want to see your house
as a blank canvas, so go for “greys, whites, mocha – shades that aren’t going to offend anyone’s taste,” says agent Alycia Baines from Barry Plant. Cherie Barber, of Ten’s The Living Room, often opts for darker colours in her TV reno projects, but says the rule is to follow through with a lighter benchtop or vice versa. “Your benchtops should always be in contrast to the colour of your cabinets,” she says.
BENCHTOPS \ Painting cabinetry and
switching benchtops are often enough to transform the kitchen. “Stone is always safe,” says Alycia. But if you can’t afford the real thing, Cherie says faux stone is “really hard
REFRESH \ “Don’t rip out, just
refresh,” says renovating expert Cherie. Those perfectly fine cabinets you’ve got? A lick of paint will update them. Cherie suggests using a laminate paint. “The key is good surface preparation,” she says. A couple of cans of paint plus primer will cost about $150 and “you can get a completely different looking kitchen on a budget”.

or four square metres of tiles,” says Cherie. Labour will take the bill to about $400.
FLATPACK \ A budget trick is to buy flatpack kitchen cabinetry. Self-assemble, then get a licensed carpenter or builder to install. “It’s far cheaper than going to a cabinetmaker or a kitchen company,” says Cherie. She often uses the Kaboodle brand from Bunnings. “You can get a new-looking kitchen, fully finished, for less than $7000 by using flatpack.”
STAINLESS STEEL \ Is your rangehood dated colour-wise? Cherie advocates using RustOleum’s stainless-steel paint to cosmetically refresh it. It also works on old cooktops, ovens and fridges, but will take up to five coats.
SPLASHBACKS \ Glass splashbacks are now a bit “ho-hum,” says Cherie. “Tiled splashbacks are popular,” says Alycia. They’re also the cheapest option. You can pick up standard tiles for “$15-$20 per square metre and most splashbacks don’t consume more than three
APPLIANCES \ “Always buy your appliances
in bundles [to save money],” says Cherie. Unbranded appliances are sufficient, she says, “for properties valued at less than $750,000 – you don’t need all the bells and whistles.” However Alycia says “if you’ve got a brand name that definitely helps.” Also consider updating the cooktop. “People highly value induction cooktops,” says Cherie.
BEFO RE FLOORING \ Forget the time, labour and
expense of tearing up the tiles or lino. “You don’t have to get timber; there’s vinyls that look wonderful these days for wet areas,” says Helena. Cherie is a big fan of Gerflor’s vinyl self-adhesive floor planks, which can be applied over most existing flooring. ● JOANNE BROOKFIELD

NORTHCOTE \ 1/221 WESTG EST ARTH STREET ESTG
S
ixty years ago, Mediterranean migrants set the gold standard for the Northcote backyard – lush, productive, full of fruit-bearing trees and with a patio from which to survey the delicious splendour. When this house was completed in 2015 its streamlined, two-storey facade and steel-lace fence cut a dramatic dash in its Westgarth street. The garden – a long slash of green along the northern flank – is haute couture, botanical style. Yet it tugs at the heart strings in an old-fashioned way. “It has olives, apples, berries, pomegranates, a cherry tree, two plum trees, lemon, orange and nectarine,’’ says the co-owner, who bought the property in 2012, cleared “a jungle” and planted these trees and the vegetable garden. “In a few years it will be a thriving orchard.’’ Built to a luxurious design by Thornbury architect Chahid Kairouz, the house is a masterpiece of contemporary comfort. Italian porcelain flooring, a polished ash staircase and towering windows and sliding doors ensure sleek good looks with minimal care. The double-glazed windows are lined with argon gas for thermal benefits without UV damage. With five bedrooms, a front living room, a large dining and kitchen zone and a big family room opening to the garden, this place has plenty of space for a large family. Storage is abundant, but even when the kids don’t use it – and the current denizens are not always impeccable – the house looks tidy. “I think it’s because there’s so much space between the clutter,” their mother says with a laugh. “It never looks messy, and I haven’t fallen over anything.” Enter through the frosted-glass front door with 59 Derby St emblazoned across its lower panel. The central hall is wide and cool in pale grey porcelain tiles and has concealed cupboards including a data cabling hub. The tiled living room has a gas log fireplace and full-length windows with black mesh blinds. Across the hall is an office or the first of five double bedrooms. There’s a laundry with external access and, one door down, a fully tiled bathroom with a glass walk-in shower and a timber-slab cabinet. Sociable families will adore the free-flowing communal areas, as elegant as they are practical. The foodie focal point continues the grey and white theme with a white stone kitchen set against grey mirror splashbacks. The waterfall island, almost four metres long, is an enticing hang-out while dinner is dished up. The 900-millimetre cooktop, two ovens and integrated dishwasher are by Miele. The walk-in pantry has a breakfast nook. Soft-closing Blum cabinetry completes the package. In the dining area, a study nook is tucked into the ash platform that forms the base of the staircase. The family room has a fireplace and doors to a patio with a Gasmate barbecue, granite benches and a rain-sensing Vergola roof. The wool-carpeted first floor has four bedrooms, one of which is the main, with a walk-in wardrobe, en suite with shower and twin basins and a city view from its glass terrace. For an easterly outlook, the front bedroom and its balcony are the pick of the bunch. Two further bedrooms have vaulted ceilings with skylights. The bathroom has an egg-shaped tub and a glass shower. A rear double carport has laneway access. ● ALISON BARCLAY

Hedges trim the neat front yard of this two-storey, semi-detached townhouse, with its tuckpointed brick and cream render facade. Three air-conditioned bedrooms on the ground floor all have built-in wardrobes. Two open directly on to the low-maintenance backyard. It has a partially covered paved area and a raised deck with sunken lights. A simple bathroom has a separate shower and tub. The laundry and a storage cupboard are tucked under a staircase with steel wire banister. It leads up to the open-plan living area that takes over the first floor. Polished floorboards glint under LED downlights. An L-shaped kitchen has a striking maroon-coloured glass splashback and a letterbox-shaped picture window. It has stainless-steel appliances, dark stone worktops and a breakfast bar. There’s also a powder room up here. Patio doors head out to a north-facing balcony, ideal for catching those summer rays. The property has a one-car garage and off-street parking for one more. ● STEPHEN A. RUSSELL

Close to Royal Park and with a deep, north-facing garden, this property suits families who like to stretch out and soak up rays. The 1950s house, in one family for two generations, has benefited from well-made renovations and there’s scope to open the living areas to the rose-laden garden. Three double bedrooms give a household with children plenty of room to grow. The owners clearly love to cook up a feast; there’s a posh, cream-carpeted dining room plus an enormous dine-in kitchen with solid timber cabinetry, a Chef wall oven and a Roden 900-millimetre gas cooktop below a copper rangehood. The tiled living room has bookcases and velvet curtains. At the rear are the laundry, the powder room and the bathroom, which has a tub, glass shower and ornate 1950s cabinet on a tessellated tiled floor. A corridor leads out to a covered patio which looks out to the lawn and roses. The rear double garage has a workshop. ● ALISON BARCLAY

2 NOVEMBER 9, 2016 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 19
NORTHCOTE \ 8B BOWER ER STREET The combination of modern living and the historic suburb of Northcote is an enticing combination. This house in Bower Street has been transformed from a modest, single-fronted Victorian into a wonderfully light and contemporary family home. The facade has been given a spruce-up in the form of a new deck under the porch and a landscaped front garden. However, the white picket fence, iron lacework verandah and leadlight windows on the front door retain that precious Victorian character. Inside, the period heritage is evidenced through the cast-iron fireplace inserts and ornate plaster cornices and archways. Otherwise, the light timber flooring and white walls employed throughout make the house completely contemporary. The kitchen, living and dining area are in the same zone and benefit from being connected to the outdoor deck. The kitchen has Smeg appliances and mirrored splashbacks. A set of double doors allows seamless interaction between the indoor and outdoor living areas. Beyond the wooden deck is the right-of-way double car space, which could double as an extended space for entertaining. There are two bedrooms downstairs and two upstairs, one with a balcony. The house is within walking distance of the station, cafes and Merri Creek walking trails. ● EMILY COLLIN

20 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ NOVEMBER 9, 2016
BRUNSWICK WEST \ 121 PEARSON STREET This beautifully renovated Edwardian effortlessly combines the elegance of its era with modern comfort. Period details include elaborate cornices, stained glass windows and chandeliers; modern amenities include hydronic heating, a contemporary kitchen, evaporative cooling and a security alarm. In the living room a gold valance and curtains frame stained glass sash windows; combined with glossy hardwood floors and a marble-topped fireplace, all serve to create an opulent ambience. This opulence continues into the lengthy dining room with its lofty ceiling, spectacular central chandelier and ceiling rose, and high-set stained glass windows. Open to the dining area is a kitchen that replaces period elegance with smart modern functionality and includes a dishwasher and composite stone benchtop. The bathroom has large-format marble tiles on the walls and floor, double basin vanity and chandelier. Three carpeted bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and heating lie off the central hallway. Two have open fireplaces. Outside, a covered timber deck large enough for a dining suite and lounge set sits flush with a fake grass area overlooked by a feature. Next to this is a long driveway to a covered parking area and a small studio. The house is in a tree-lined street close to transport, cafes and schools. ● JULIETTE ELFICK
