Everything old is new again. The Nokia talk-and-text 3310 phone is making a comeback, the cool kids are plugging into the rebooted Nintendo Classic for a game of Super Mario Bros and, this Saturday, the world will celebrate the great vinyl revival with World Record Store Day. In this age of 24/7 information overload, it seems we’re yearning for a simpler time when music came in grooves rather than bytes and books were stored on shelves. As comedianturned-children’s author Pete Helliar says in this week’s cover story: “Parents really want books in their kids’ hands.” Reading about Pete and his quest for Logies gold, I also felt a tinge of nostalgic affection for Aussie TV’s night of nights. The Logies, which roll around for the 59th time on Sunday, might be the cheesiest awards this side of Eurovision, but I wouldn’t miss them for quids. ●

STEphen McKENZIE meets would-be golden boy pete helliar

late last year past Typo, which sells knickknacks, and he said, ‘Dad, they should spell Typo incorrectly’.” Pete is so thrilled to be part of a “passionate, eager and creative” industry that he’s writing a sequel. “People think publishing is lost to Kindles, but parents really want books in their kids’ hands. Reading a hard copy now is the same as it’s ever been, a connection to the past,” he says. He also holds dear to his own past. The third of Bill and Helen Helliar’s four kids, Pete was easily the most animated, rocking blue skivvies and green flares in family snaps (his father has a firm hand on young Pete’s shoulder in one, “to stop (him) from striking a Fonzie pose”). He counts kindergarten friends among his closest; so too mates from Parade College, where he played serviceable footy when kilos lighter than Strauchanie and discovered a knack for making people laugh. By the mid 1990s, he’d made it an earner.

I
f Pete Helliar could time-travel, like the 12-year-old protagonist of his debut kids’ novel Frankie Fish and the Sonic Suitcase, he’d criss-cross history with abandon. First stop 80AD and the Colosseum (a lifelong fascination), followed by its modern-day equivalent, the MCG, where at half time in the 1970 VFL grand final he’d charge into the buoyant Collingwood rooms screaming, “Handball! Handball! Carlton’s gonna handball!”. He’d make the odd wardrobe change before childhood family portraits and jump less boldly into an improv gig that almost derailed his comic career in 1998. He’d relive marriage vows to his wife Bridget and the births of his three boys, now aged nine, 12 and 14. Hell, he might even jump forward to this year’s Logies, to see if he snares gold. That’s right, gold. Pete’s in the running for Australian television’s most coveted gong, hot on the heels of his The Project co-hosts, Carrie Bickmore and bookies’ favourite Waleed Aly, who took out the Gold Logie in 2015 and 2016 respectively. At last year’s ceremony, Pete and fellow comic Kitty Flanagan slayed with their lightning repartee. “Congratulations on your nomination,” Pete quipped to Carrie, who was seated up front. “Please come and visit my table, um, up back, with lovely competition winners and the highest-selling newsagents in rural Victoria.” Not everyone is amused this year, with anonymous insiders questioning Pete’s gold-worthiness. The Project’s executive producer, Craig Campbell, isn’t laughing either. “It amazes me that anyone would consider Pete a sidekick and not a co-host,” he says. “To say his contribution doesn’t deserve a Gold Logie is not giving him the credit of 18 years’ screen time on Australian television.” The debate started trending on social media channels, where one unamused viewer told Pete she was “shocked because you don’t deserve it”. His response is typically sanguine. “It’s all a bit of a laugh,” he tells me. “Years ago I might have got upset, but I’ve done 20 years of stand-up, from 20 people in
GOOD AS GOLD pubs to 2000 in theatres. My armour is pretty strong.” His nomination shouldn’t be surprising, as the Gold Logie is a popularity contest and Pete is unquestionably popular: as Parade College sports captain, hapless footy alter ego Bryan “Strauchanie” Strauchan, stand-up veteran, The Project funnyman and, now, children’s book author. He’s certainly the centre of attention when we meet at a his favourite cafe in Eltham: “I watch you every night,” says a star-struck woman at the next table. She blushes when Pete offers a selfie: “Geez, you make me laugh.” His just released book, Frankie Fish, is aimed squarely at kids’ funnybones. “I’d never imagined writing a children’s book and suddenly, days after I did, two publishers contacted my agent asking if I might,” says Pete, who’d not told a soul. “What’s going on there?” The book’s protagonist, loosely sketched from his sons’ personalities, travels back in time to Scotland to save his family lineage. “It’s Back to the Future meets The Magic Faraway Tree,” Pete says. “My boys helped me stick to narrative. You can have jokes, but unless there’s a story, kids won’t turn the page. “My youngest is obsessed with books and became my focus group. He’s funny, too. I was walking with him 6 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ APRIL 19, 2017
“Comedy careers weren’t wishful thinking back then,” Pete says. “There were radio and panel shows and a wave of acts that have long been a supportive community.” Two gigs in late ’96 “went well”, 30 or so in ’97 “were killer”, but Pete crashed to earth in ’98. “I thought I’d try some improv, you know, ‘Where are you from? Yada yada’. But when it came to it, I had nothing. ‘Where are you from?’ ‘Craigieburn.’ ‘Um, OK.’ ‘What do you do?’ ‘I’m a dentist.’ ‘That’s nice.’ “I bombed without artillery and it was soul crushing. I remember drinking on St Kilda Beach thinking my dreams were shattered.”
E
nter Rove McManus, then a Channel 31 colleague who added Pete as sidekick to his network show that ran for 10 years – priceless national exposure that opened radio, sketch and scriptwriting opportunities and fuelled his creativity. But it’s stand-up Pete adores most, especially on annual jaunts to country regions with close friend and fellow comic Tom Gleeson. “Basically, we pick an obscure spot on the map, take turns headlining and spend a weekend laughing, drinking and talking family and new material.” Stay tuned for One Hot Mess, an hour of live stand-up

slated to air on Channel Ten later this month. “Australian networks don’t generally fund stand-up specials, so I’m pretty thrilled,” says Pete of the show he toured last year, covering the challenges of fatherhood, ageing and fast-food addiction in his self-deprecating, everyman way. (Therein lies his gift: it’s easier to laugh at your own foibles when someone exposes theirs.) Pete’s proud that The Project, which celebrated 2000 episodes on April 12, exists because of “heroically supportive” Channel Ten executives who persisted despite poor early ratings. No such praise for the TV execs who shelved his footy program The Bounce after only five weeks. “We had a great initial run, radio was saying there’s a new footy show in town, then MasterChef Australia started and it was a juggernaut. Suddenly we were gone.”
T
he Bounce married Pete’s closest passions after family: comedy and football. “We did some fun clips. I remember one of a Hawthorn supporter who painted his face brown and gold and couldn’t wipe it off, and there he was in family portraits. Funny sketches. Two more months and I reckon the show would have found its feet.” Maybe so. But would he be less erudite without his quirky current affairs show and cohort Waleed Aly’s towering intellect? “We’d met a couple of times, but it has been an incredible experience getting to know him. Some say, ‘He’s Muslim, he divides people and he’s always going on about stuff’. Hello? That’s his job, he’s a broadcaster. Frankly, I reckon certain people just aren’t used to such intelligence on TV.” Still, given the chance to time travel with Frankie’s sonic suitcase, Pete might visit September 2016 to argue rather than accept The Project’s decision to stop Donald Trump jokes – the logic at the time being that Trump’s possible election as US president was no laughing matter. “They ran it by me, because it affected me most. I got calls from comedians who didn’t agree with it. I regret it, too, maybe, because comedy should never be censored, sometimes it can help. And what Trump hates most is being made fun of.” If a multiple-bankrupt, reality-TV star can reach the White House, surely it’s hardly outrageous for a charming, witty, intuitive TV personality to win the Gold Logie? But Pete says he’d swap 10 Gold Logies for a more stable world. In the meantime, he’ll keep trying to make adults and kids laugh. But what would he prefer, a Gold Logie or the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, children’s literature’s most prestigious prize? “I’ve not so much as won a chook raffle at the pub,” he says. “As long as I can keep working creatively. That’ll do me.” ● editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

Foxey’s Hangout Rosé 2016 (Mornington Peninsula) $28; 13% Nothing beats lunch on the back deck at Foxey’s, overlooking the vineyards. If you haven’t been, put it on your must-do list. Made from shiraz and pinot noir, this is at the darker end of the rosé scale. It’s floral, smelling of strawberries and cream, and it tastes of summer berries and blood oranges. Its delicious flavours are robust but not sweet. ● Enjoy with \ Pork rillettes
Levantine Hill Syrah 2014 (Yarra Valley) $80; 13.5%
Scion Durif 2014 (Rutherglen) $42; 13.3%
Levantine’s wines dictate the menu at its restaurant, Ezard @ Levantine Hill, making it a great place to experience food and wine matching at its finest. Yarra Valley shiraz tends towards dark cherries, blood plum and spice – and winemaker Paul Bridgeman has finessed them into a wine of structure and personality. It needs a good decant to bring out its best. ●
Scion’s small cellar door, at the front of the winery, pours some of Rutherglen’s best wines. This durif is picked young and is opposite to the bruising durifs that Rutherglen is famous for. With blackberry, raspberry, spice and earth flavours, it’s structured and bright, with sandy tannins and energetic acid that’s rarely found in durif. ●

BARGAIN BUY Shadowfax Minnow 2015 (Werribee) $28; 13% If you have kids, Shadowfax is an easy cellar door to combine with a trip to Werribee Zoo. Its food makes it a good lunch stop, too. The grapes in the Minnow are all grown in the vineyard next to the winery. It’s funky and perfumed, with raspberry, spice and earth flavours, sandy tannins and a lengthy finish. ● Enjoy with \ Charcuterie

y mother changes when I take her to review a restaurant. Suddenly, she’s on – all adjectives and analogies. “There’s enough spice in this for a child, but not enough to give you hiccups,” she says at Gilson. “You can use that, if you like.” Thanks, mum. The mild heat is from minced lamb sausage on a stracciatella, cherry tomato and mint pizza, with a chewy crust so good we dip it in the jus gras accompanying the wood-fired spatchcock. A finger bowl appears as we attack the bird’s wings with our hands. Clearly, I’m not adopted. We also polish off pillowy gnocchi with green peas and flowers – and that’s after honey-drizzled haloumi and beef tartare with oyster cream. Mum even manages to finish a tooth-achingly sweet caramelised white chocolate mousse – she says it’s a carbon copy of butterscotch Angel Delight from her youth. There’s a European bistro feel at this all-day diner, with its powder-pink finishes, brown leather and marble tabletops. I expected more oomph from breakfast at Gilson, owned by the team behind Mammoth and Barry. But for a reliable dinner or a spritz overlooking the Tan, this is the place. Homecoming \ Six episodes of 20-25 minutes While radio documentaries have been enjoying a renaissance via podcasts, the golden age of the radio drama still seems a dim and dusty memory (although, if you really believe that, let me point you towards the BBC’s iPlayer app). Audible has recently entered the drama market with some starry productions, but Gimlet Media’s Homecoming feels quite new. A gripping six-part thriller that makes the most of its sound-based format, it stars Catherine Keener, Oscar Isaac and David Schwimmer – and is completely free. ● LISTEN \ gimletmedia.com/homecoming
The Leftovers \ Showcase Thursday April 20, 8.30pm showcasechannel.com.au This bleak drama from the team behind Lost has been a slow-burn hit. Tracking humanity’s fate after a chunk of the world’s population mysteriously vanishes, the HBO series has survived a tepid start to become one of the best things on telly. (One critic cheekily suggested the world has simply caught up with the dystopian vision it offers.) Melburnians are in for an extra treat with this third and final series as the action (and filming) moves to our fair city. ●

It’s packed with fascinating tidbits. “B is For Batman” not only reveals Neal Hefti’s 1966 theme was the first song Prince learnt to play, but also contains gossip about his affair with Kim Basinger. In “N is For Nothing Compares 2 U”, we learn he once had fisticuffs with Sinead O’Connor. ● BUY \ simonandschuster.com.au

Amy shares more than that with the blockbusting New Zealander. There’s a similarly haunted quality to the heartsore drama on offer here, six black-and-white filmic affairs played out as slo-mo, razor-sharp pop. A full album is still some way off, but don’t wait. T
he oddest thing about meeting Bill Nighy is how much he resembles, well, Bill Nighy. Make no mistake, Bill is a terrific actor, able to imbue the slenderest of parts with a rich vein of energy, humanity and tragicomic frailty. But we love Bill for himself – his trademark tics and self-deprecating wit – as much as the characters he plays. Little wonder a woman at a recent special screening for his new film Their Finest confesses she wants to take him home. “If you get past 50 and you’re still in one piece and you get in a position where you’re being interviewed, you will not infrequently be asked about what it’s like to be the thinking woman’s crumpet,” Bill says later. “I used to quip that anyone who wants to be physically intimate with me needs to seek professional help.” Still, the perceived proximity between performance and performer could explain why he keeps getting cast as down-at-heel actors (and, most notably in Love Actually Actually, the odd rock star). In Their Finest, he’s cast as Ambrose
Hilliard, an ageing thespian who hasn’t yet noticed his glory days are behind him. A smart and delightful crowdpleaser Their Finest is a World War II drama in which a government film unit attempts to make an inspiring film about Britain’s retreat from Dunkirk. It’s an area of history that retains a powerful nostalgic lure. “I think the nostalgia is for a kind of simplified life, where everyone was united against one real danger and the daily static of normal life was unplugged for a while. And because of all the movies, it seems romantic and kind of sexy too.” While Bill isn’t immune to a spot of nostalgia himself, it was Their Finest’s modern themes that most appealed to him – particularly its focus on gender equality, a passionate cause of his. “You always try to do films that are going to be two things: entertaining and useful in some ways. Even if it’s infinitesimally making the world a better place to be in, then you’re in good shape.” ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au

A COFFEE WITH … Ben featured in Netflix’s Chef’s Table series that strangers approached him. He could no longer pretend he wasn’t famous. “I kind of cringe at it,” he says. “Watching yourself you see how intense you are about things. You don’t think you’re that intense, but everyone else thinks you’re super intense.” It’s easy to see how Ben’s passion could be mistaken for intensity. But his lighter side shines when he talks about family, Attica’s daily “staff discussions” (a grown-up show-and-tell that aims to teach staff to empathise), and his beloved hi-fi system. Still, there’s no hint of jest when he tells me: “A kiss is way less personal than eating something”. “You’re taking something and putting it in someone’s body. That is such a privilege. Maybe you question it more when you come to Attica because there are expectations, but people don’t question basic meals very often. Would you let somebody you didn’t know kiss you? You wouldn’t, that’s madness.” As he tucks into his ‘“nana’s day off” matzo ball chicken soup, I can’t help but ask if he’d kiss the chef. “Maybe if he made me a beautiful meal I’d want to kiss him,” he says – not a trace of intensity in sight. ● SOFIA LEVIN slevin@theweeklyreview.com.au

ou’d never be able to tell that Ben Shewry has worked 285 hours in the past 15 days. Australia’s top chef is finishing off a major renovation at his restaurant, Attica, which has just been named the best in Australasia – but he still manages to be right on time when we meet at Miss Ruben, the Jewish-deli-inspired cafe next door. His skin is glowing as if he’s on a miracle diet (he isn’t), there’s not a speck on his black T-shirt and his hair looks freshly conditioned. He’s not a coffee drinker but orders a latte anyway – the only giveaway that he’s tired. Given his rise to fame, Ben is one of the most down-to-earth chefs I’ve met. His attitude and approach, not to mention his food genius, are why Attica has been on the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants list since 2013. At the 2017 awards, held in Melbourne earlier this month, Attica was named No. 32 in the world, the top-ranked Aussie restaurant for the fifth year running. “It’s been a crazy ride and one of the most fun weeks ever,” says Ben. “I’m crazy humbled by the support and love and am excited for the future of Australian restaurants.” When Attica first made the World’s 50 Best, in 2013, the hype was overwhelming. Media queued outside and drivers honked all the way down Glen Eira Road. But it wasn’t until

BIKINI \ Bikini turned on its neon in January and is already a Seminyak hot spot. Reminiscent of a flirty New York warehouse, it’s another win for Adam’s 8 Degree Projects team, which is also behind next door’s Sisterfields cafe. From foie gras parfait cigars to desserts that mimic the pink feature wall, a meal this playful back home would be triple the price. ● ulookhotinbikini.com
EXPAT ROASTERS \ Just over a year old, Expat Roasters wouldn’t be out of place in Flinders Lane. The tiny shop – all concrete finishes and tropical staff uniforms – serves the best coffee around. Espresso, soy lattes, pour-over – whatever your regular order, Expat works closely with local Indonesian farmers and producers alongside a selection of international favourites. ● expatroasters.com
KIM IM SOO \ Set in a pristine white building with a small pool out the back, this is one of the best homewares stores in Bali – and it’s surprisingly affordable. After you shop, take a moment to relax at the adjoining Kim Soo Cafe. ● kimsoohome.com
DA MARIA ARIA \ Who knew you could get a thin, bubbly-crusted, Napoli-style pizza in the middle of Seminyak? WARUNG BABI GULING SARI KEMBAR 99 \ In Seminyak, fine dining restaurants sit beside street-side shops selling local specialties. For the equivalent of $3, this is where you’ll find the best babi guling – suckling pig – served a variety of ways with rice: as soup, on a skewer, with jackfruit, sticky with kecap manis, in satay and garnished with crispy dried intestine. ● Jalan Teuku Umar Barat No. 99, Denpasar Barat, Kerobokan Kelod
MOTEL MEXICOLA EXICOLA \ It might look deceptively small from the outside, but it’s difficult to visit Motel Mexicola for dinner without kicking on – and ramping up – until the wee hours. Decorative tiles, vibrant nooks and Mexican memorabilia abound. Expect staff that clap along to loud music, as well as dancing after dinner. If you like pina coladas, this is the place for you. ● motelmexicolabali.com
BO$$ MAN \ There are a few burger joints in Seminyak, but BO$$ MAN keeps it simple with six burgers, house sauces and perfectly cooked patties made from 60-day dry-aged chuck steaks. The very best part is worth saving for last – you can get burgers delivered from 11am until 4am, seven days a week, so you can recover as quickly as possible after a big night out. ● bossmanbali.com
THE SLOW \ Not far from Seminyak in Canggu is The Slow, exquisite boutique accommodation best described as tropical minimalism in style. Features include floor-to-ceiling windows, rain showers and private pools; the health-oriented cafe downstairs is worth a visit alone. As the resort is still in its soft opening phase, suites are $170 and private pool rooms $220 – run, don’t walk. ● theslow.id

3 things I have learned ● Never underestimate young people – they
bring so much enthusiasm and giftedness with them into education.
● Education is ever-evolving and we need to
evolve with it.
● Catherine McAuley (foundress of the
Sisters of Mercy) said: “You can never say it is enough.” This resonates with me – we can never say “it’s enough” when it comes to learning and knowledge.
ABOUT THE ACADEMY Academy of Mary Immaculate is a Catholic girls’ secondary college founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1857. Celebrating 160 years in 2017, the Academy is proud of its unique school character, embedded in the heart of the city of Melbourne. With a dedication to each individual’s learning experience, the Academy’s warm school community is built on a strong commitment to Mercy values. From its city-edge site, the school has an enviable location, with easy access to Melbourne’s best learning and cultural centres. It is an enriching way to learn and the inner-city location helps develop socially-aware students equipped for university, travel and life.
(PETER CASAMENTO)
ister Mary Moloney, principal of Academy of Mary Immaculate and Sister of Mercy, has been passionate about education since before her very first day of school. Her grasp of what education can be – particularly for women – started at home, where her family valued conversation and encouraged her to read widely, including history, art, and literature. “I remember my first day at school. The teacher sat us at a little table and gave us blocks to play with,” Sister Mary explains. “I remember feeling so indignant, as I was there to learn.” After graduating from the University of Melbourne, Sister Mary taught humanities, English and religious education in Mercy schools from Geelong to Mildura and Kyneton. She became a principal after several years and then was appointed principal of Academy of Mary Immaculate in 2006. Sister Mary leads 650 students and 85 staff. This year the college will celebrate 160 years of continuous operation as a school. “The Academy was here before the [Royal] Exhibition Building, St Patrick’s Cathedral, before the Melbourne Cup, and before Australian rules football started,” Sister Mary says. “Like Melbourne, our story continues – our story walks alongside Melbourne’s story.” The Academy’s own remarkable history as the oldest girls’ secondary school in Victoria began with a request from Melbourne’s archbishop, which led Mother Ursula Frayne and a group of Mercy sisters to travel to Melbourne to found the school in 1857. The sisters created a tradition of teaching students Mercy values, as well as raising the standard of girls’ education. The sisters also sought to show students how women can be decision-makers and capable leaders both in large organisations and in making their own career choices. These Mercy values, and this legacy, are still present today. “I think courage is a very important value because we need strong, resilient women who can make a difference,” Sister Mary says. At the Academy of Mary Immaculate, Sister Mary has worked hard to inspire in all students, and staff, an interest in the world around them and how to look for opportunities to have a positive impact. By giving younger staff positions of leadership and responsibility, they can pass on these values to the students, who in turn use college leadership positions to train and sustain the younger group for the future. Because how far you can go with your education has never had limits for Sister Mary Moloney, students’ global education begins both inside and outside the college – through engaging projects, programs and volunteering.

‘I think courage is a very important value because we need strong, resilient women who can make a difference’ The whole Academy community has been involved in the introduction of a sustainability program, with college council and leadership members working hands-on with students to gather data and develop a path and policy for positive environmental change in the college. Sister Mary believes that, by providing a place where students are given a voice, they can represent not only their college but also themselves from an informed position. So when they leave the school or head overseas
on cultural exchanges, they’re best prepared with open minds and hearts to understand all they can about the world we share. Seeing these future generations of young women seek to fulfil their aspirations with great drive is what Sister Mary enjoys most. She believes in developing a culture at the Academy that helps students to engage at their best with their passion and operate on an equal playing field with the wider world. From this viewpoint, students begin
to see viable careers in traditional and non-traditional fields. Such a contemporary educational focus at the Academy is set in the foundations of its history, which is why it’s fitting that the celebrations for the 160th year have the theme “celebrating our journey”. In commemoration of the past, and in anticipation of the future, a celebration will be held on April 20, the foundation day of the Academy Of Mary Immaculate – 160 years to the day after it all began. ● APRIL 19, 2017 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 19

t takes a keen eye to spot the differences between the new turbo V8 version of Ferrari’s GTC4Lusso and the V12-powered model on which it is based. Without lifting the bonnet, there are only two visual indicators that this Lusso has a smaller engine with fewer cylinders: the design of the alloy wheels and the shape of the tail-pipes. It’s an interesting approach given Ferrari reckons the GTC4Lusso T (as the V8 turbo is called) has a different enough character to make it a separate car. It’s with the oily bits beneath that the fun starts. The engine is a version of the 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 that powers the California T and 488 sports car, modified to suit the Lusso’s grand touring responsibilities and heftier size. In isolation, its outputs look mighty: enough to propel the Lusso T to 100km/h from standstill in a claimed 3.5 seconds. This car, with its four-seat capacity, might appeal to someone wanting a Ferrari with family-friendly capabilities and accessible performance and handling. They’ll even save some cash because the Lusso T will cost about $504,000 when it lands in Australia, compared with the V12’s heftier $579,000. Anyone who loves the blood-curdling scream of a high-revving Ferrari V12 is in

for a different experience from the V8. The Lusso T still fires up with strident bark but it’s the rhythm guitar player, not the guy who plays the soaring solos. Yet it feels anything but tardy. Power and acceleration come on with an intensity that pushes the driver (and any passengers) back in their seat. Any doubts the Lusso T’s relative size and weight will blunt its agility are put to rest on a challenging, twisty road. It has astonishing

grip and plenty of traction exiting corners. But it is also well balanced, allowing the driver to get back on the throttle, deliver some of that power and head for the next corner. This Ferrari is also meant to carry four adults in comfort and that’s perhaps where it is less convincing. Two rear seats have more than adequate room but the ride can become jiggly at speed on uneven surfaces. Talking fuel consumption as a cost of
ownership seems ludicrous in a car of this price, but it’s worth noting that with a combined figure of 11.6L/100km the Lusso T does some 23 per cent better than the V12. As with the exterior, there’s little difference between this and the V12 version in the cabin. It’s all leather and carpets, and overall, a fine combination of luxury and sportiness. There’s plenty to tempt anyone prepared to spend more than half a million dollars on a car: prodigious speed and handling, luxury and useable space. It’s not the ultimate grand tourer but if that is what you’re after, Ferrari can help you out with the V12. ●

he AFL got off to a flying start for Demons utility player Jack Watts with a convincing first-round win against the Saints. But now he’s really playing in rival territory, having moved into an original two-storey Victorian terrace house right in St Kilda’s heartland. “It is your typical share house. It’s a young environment and we love to have fun. There’s music playing all the time and not too much that’s breakable,” says Jack, who shares the new digs with his cousin and best mate Mitch and two other friends. “It took forever to find because Mitch and I both have dogs.” The decor, unsurprisingly, leans heavily to the sporting, with a table tennis table and a big picture of Jack’s sporting hero, basketballer Michael Jordan, dominating the downstairs living area. But Jack – who is co-founder of the swimwear company SKWOSH – also has a creative side. He recently took delivery of a piano, which he’s very excited about. “I was very inspired by La La Land,” the 26-year-old says, laughing. “I love music and am about to start lessons.” ● SARAH HARRIS sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au
TA B L E T E N N I S TA B L E I’ve won three MFC table tennis tournaments in a row, so I’m on top of my game at the moment. It is another thing from childhood, I guess. I used to play my dad and he used to smash me, but once I got into my teens I started getting him.
ROGER FEDERER NIKE CLOTHING I asked my manager if it was at all possible to get a Roger Federer outfit for the table tennis tournament. She asked the people at Nike and they sent it over from America. You can’t buy it in the store because it is made specifically for him. The boys loved it – it was a bit of a show.

DOG I have had Jett for 4½ years. He’s a typical Labrador and will eat anything. He’s not much of a training companion, being only good for the first couple of laps, but he is a best mate, good friend and good to have around the house.

SWIMWEAR My business partner Adam Walsh and I set up SKWOSH about a year and a half ago. We saw a gap in the market for men’s swimwear that actually looks nice and that you feel good wearing.
CLOCK
GOLF CLUBS
I have an interest in one-off pieces. This Hey Stubby artist series clock was done by Jack Turner, who designs our SKWOSH shorts. I found it up on the website Hunting For George and he actually didn’t know I had bought this.
My dad tried to get me into golf when I was a kid, but I didn’t have the patience. Now I am obsessed. All the boys at MFC (Melbourne Football Club) play a lot of golf in their time off. I play off at 10.4 at the moment.
PA I N T I N G I saw this painting of Michael Jordan when I was on holiday in Bali. He is just the greatest of all time. Growing up I was a big basketball nerd. I watched all his videos, all his games, and just loved him. APRIL 19, 2017 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 21

O
n a quiet, tree-lined street, this double-storey Victorian terrace house on a corner block offers the best of Carlton North. Just a short walk from Curtain Square, Princes Park, Rathdowne village and vibrant Lygon Street, the location is simply hard to beat. With impressive frontage, No.271 Canning Street is a sophisticated affair that shows off Victorian elegance and charm. Built in 1883, the house has plenty of history – its original owner even ran a school from the property – with the benefit of contemporary touches and luxuries throughout. Two of the bedrooms are off the wider-than-usual entry hall at the front. Both have high ceilings, lots of natural light, open fireplaces and views – the front room across the street; the rear out to the backyard. A bathroom and the laundry round out the ground floor. Stairs in the hall lead up to the first floor, where most of the living is done. There’s another bedroom and a dining room at the front of this level, with the kitchen and a second bathroom at the rear. The living area has a rustic feel, with exposed brick walls painted white. It’s an expansive zone, and well-lit thanks to skylights above an exposed timber loft. There is dark timber shelving either side of the focal point of the room – an arched open fireplace. The formal dining area is on one side of the fireplace, through a wide, arched doorway. There is potential to make this space into a bedroom if required. Tall Victorian windows look out to the street and provide access to the front-facing balcony, which has ornate white railings. On the other side of the living area, the upstairs bedroom shares access to the balcony and has its own open fireplace. Outside the lounge is a split-level entertainment area that offers potential as an indulgent retreat. Back inside and to the rear, the open kitchen and meals area has white-painted timber panelling and more of the whitepainted brick walls. There’s a bathroom beyond the kitchen, with a shower and separate toilet. Back downstairs and through a door at the rear is a paved entertainment area and the garden. The entry to the selfcontained studio is here, too. The two-level studio has an open living, dining and kitchen area downstairs, with a loft bedroom. At the bottom of the property is the separate garage. It has room to park two cars and set up a workshop. There’s a toilet in this building, suggesting it offers immense possibilities for future use as another self-contained space. The old Yorkshire Brewery site has been transformed into luxurious living spaces, this townhouse among them. Exposed original brickwork defines the facade and flows throughout the interior, contrasting with modern touches. Inside this apartment, the open-plan living, kitchen and dining area makes up the ground floor. Timber panelling and concrete ceilings add a dramatic flair. The kitchen has marble splashbacks and twin Miele ovens. The two carpeted bedrooms, one with en suite, are upstairs. A central bathroom completes the offering. Adding to the property’s appeal are two parking spaces and access to shared facilities, including a gym, library, dining room and terrace. ● CHARLIE BRAITHWAITE
WE LOV E IT This elevated house is in an ideal position close to Penders Park and shops, restaurants and trams on High Street. The front garden, porch and a weatherboard exterior give the house great street appeal. Inside, a well-considered floor plan adds to the offering. There are polished floorboards throughout. The living area at the front has plenty of light and an open fireplace. Both bedrooms are off this room, the main with a built-in wardrobe. At the back of the house is the kitchen, which has robin’s-egg-blue cabinetry and modern appliances. There’s a combined bathroom and laundry here, too. Out the back is a glorious garden and entertainment area, with raised gardens, a shed and even an outdoor toilet. ● CHARLIE BRAITHWAITE

FITZROY NORTH \ 139 ST GEORGES ROAD
AGENT Chambers 9489 9888 PRICE $2.6 million + AUCTION April 29 at 11am OFI April 20, 6pm SCHOOL ZONES + Fitzroy North Primary + Fitzroy High + Fitzroy Community
With views stretching through Edinburgh Gardens across the road, this fourbedroom slice of Fitzroyalty has period sophistication in abundance. With an address in Fitzroy North’s premier location, the area abutting the gardens, the best of the neighbourhood is close at hand. City-bound trams, cafes, shops and bars are all just a short walk away. Its name, Tolka, is emblazoned on the genteel facade. The interior matches the alluring exterior. The entrance and front of the house represent the property’s past, with ornate arches and high, patterned ceilings. To the right of the entry is a formal sitting room with bay windows looking out to the street. Further along is the dining room, which is fit for black-tie mixers or relaxed family meals. At the rear of the ground level is a contemporary touch. The modern kitchen and living area hints at the potential a complete overhaul might offer the house. Finishing the level is a bedroom or study, the laundry and a powder room. Upstairs, there are three more bedrooms, two with open fireplace and juliet balconies, and the bathroom (which could do with a modern touch). The backyard has something that is like gold dust on the city fringe: a double carport, entered from the second frontage on Brunswick Street North. Throughout, this period piece is a unique blend of antique and contemporary features. ● CHARLIE BRAITHWAITE

THORNBURY \ 167 CLARENDON STREET From the road, the house at 167 Clarendon Street looks like a quaint Californian bungalow, with old-fashioned charm and an idyllic front garden. Leadlight windows and a stained-glass door suggest this is a period affair. However, on the inside a marriage of contemporary features and early 20thcentury sensibilities awaits. Beyond the front verandah and double entry doors, the floor plan is inviting. High ceilings with ornate details are an instant clue about the vintage of this house. The four bedrooms are at the front. The main has bay windows, a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and high ceilings and get plenty of natural light. At the rear of the house is a contemporary open living and kitchen area, balancing the natural tones of polished timber floors, a deep red feature wall and vibrant cherryred splashbacks. The kitchen has a long island bench and breakfast bar, which bathes in natural light from northfacing bay and stained-glass windows. Upstairs, there’s another living area, offering appeal to larger families or those looking for a sizeable office space at home. Out the back is a large garden with lots of lawn and an undercover decked entertainment area. Further sweetening the deal, there is driveway parking. The house’s is quite literally a stone’s throw to the Clyde Jones Reserve and walking distance to High Street and Station Street shops. ● CHARLIE BRAITHWAITE
