It says much about Melbourne’s particular charms that a swag of international celebrities choose to call our fair city home. Global A-listers Rachel Griffiths, Eric Bana, Guy Pearce and Geoffrey Rush all go about their daily business around town, unbothered by paparazzi and other irritations that might beseige them in, say, London, LA, or even Sydney. And then there’s this week’s cover star, Carl Cox, a true legend of the global dance music scene, who routinely sells out massive gigs in Ibiza, Croatia and America, but has chosen to set up house just south of Frankston. What’s he doing there and what do the locals make of it all? Read Myke Bartlett’s fascinating interview inside. ●

THE SUPERSTAR T TAR NEXT DOOR MYKE BARTLETT MEETS INTERNATIONAL DJ & HASTINGS LOCAL, CARL COX
B
ritish DJ Carl Cox is a bona fide global superstar. A pioneer of Britain’s revolutionary house music movement of the late 1980s, he helped bring electronic dance music crashing into the mainstream and was part of a select group who recreated the DJ as pop star – as magnetic and recognisable as any of the music they played. Some 30 years later, Carl is still touring the world playing massive gigs to sellout crowds, including the occasional return to his spiritual homeland of Ibiza – the Spanish island that’s become a byword for the house music scene. In any given week, superstar Carl might be flitting from Vienna to Croatia to Atlanta to Los Angeles. The one place I didn’t expect to find him was just south of Frankston, tucked up in his brand new studio on his farm in Hastings. It’s actually 12 years since Carl decided to buy a house on the peninsula, as an antidote to his jetsetting ways. “My life outside Australia is hectic,” he says. “Here, I come out of the spinning ball of madness. My life makes more sense. A lot of my UK friends decide to live in Berlin or Singapore or Barcelona because there’s more work. I don’t want to come to Australia for more work. I want to live a little.” The presence of an international legend hasn’t gone unnoticed by the locals, Carl says, although they tend to leave him alone. The only downside of his reputation means neighbours think he’s responsible for any loud party in earshot. “One night, these guys came over with a slab of beer, because there was a party on the other side of my house. They thought we were having a party and not letting them in.” Carl’s connection to Australia goes back to 1990, when he was brought over from Britain to promote an early hit record. It was his first taste of international stardom and Australia’s first taste of the booming house scene. He soon became something of an ambassador for local dance music, returning every year since to play warehouse parties and clubs all over the country.

There was one Aussie city he connected with more than any other. “I always felt when I was in Melbourne that I was at home. First and foremost, there were a lot of English here, but it’s also very cosmopolitan. The techno and house scene was stronger here than anywhere else. I felt that I fitted in.” Now, he says he enjoys the Peninsula lifestyle – the ease with which he can spend a day fishing on a friend’s boat or an afternoon cruising the local wineries on one of his vast collection of motorbikes. Which brings us to the other reason Carl is in Hastings. The studio we’re sitting in was once a storage shed for an apple orchard. Now, it’s partmusic hub, part-man cave and part-garage, hosting
“My life outside Australia is hectic. Here, I come out of the spinning ball of madness.” an astounding collection of classic American muscle cars and motorbikes (he’s been running a motorsport business since 2013). “I can’t do this in England,” Carl says. “I don’t have the land, the weather. I’ve always been into cars, just as much as I’ve been into music. I’m a big part of that society here in Melbourne. I go to the meets all the time. People can’t believe it.” We talk a lot about cars. He does, at least. As someone who just bought a car for the first time in 14 years, I pretend to understand the key terms and models. But it’s hard not to be swept up in his enthusiasm. In person, Carl is an expansive, relaxed presence. He laughs a lot and leaves you in no doubt that he’s living the dream. Which isn’t to say he’s remotely boastful, more simply realistic. Born in Manchester to Barbadian immigrants, Carl was raised in South London by his bus driver dad and midwife mum. School didn’t connect,
although the school discos gave him a chance to try out his developing DJ skills. Mum encouraged him to pursue his musical dreams, helping him buy his first turntables, but Dad hoped he’d settle down and find a real job – although it was his father who first got him into music. “All the people Dad used to get around to the house were his friends from the West Indies. Whether I liked it or not, I was hearing all this music. One night when I was about seven or eight I came down the stairs and he could see me and I thought I was going to get told off and sent back to bed. But he said: ‘If you’re here now, you can do one of two things, go to bed or come down here and put the records on.’ He got me on DJ duty. I found the selection of music I played went down really well, they were all dancing and having a good time. From the get-go, I played music that got people dancing.”
A
fter school, Carl worked as a scaffolder, doing weddings and discos on the side, before finally starting up his own DJ business in the mid-’80s. Business scraped along, but the options were limited. Back then, the only career path for a DJ was to try to score a well-paid radio gig. “I didn’t have the radio personality. My personality came through how I played the music and the way I chose the music. I keep an eye on the room for the person who’s not dancing and make it my mission to find the song that gets them on the floor. If I can get them dancing, I’ve got the room.” Everything changed with the arrival of house music in 1988. As one of the first DJs to buy into the four-four beat we now think of as “dance music”, he initially alienated more people than he won over. But soon he was leaving weddings and birthday parties behind in favour of massive raves. Mainstream success wasn’t far away. But not everyone was impressed. “Dad thought I’d just got lucky,” says Carl. “He wanted me to be a hardworking citizen. A bus driver.” And how did Carl deal with his sudden success? “Most people don’t deal with success well, but I
didn’t let it bother me. I revelled in the music, but not being a pop-star DJ. I wasn’t interested in playing the media, the people I’m interested are the ones who paid money to see me play. “It’s why I don’t end up in all the magazines, I don’t go to premieres, I don’t rub shoulders going to fashion shows. It’s not important to me at all.”
T
oday, Carl remains a passionate ambassador for dance music (he is headlining at the Babylon music festival in the northern Grampians in February and at Pure in April). Having resisted the pressure to produce more commercial hits, he has moved labels, making music that tries to push dance forwards. He was the resident DJ at Space Ibiza for an incredible 27 years, famous for performing marathon eight-hour sets. He says he’s never tired of the rave scene. “When I see all these people come together and enjoying themselves, I realise that happens because I’m playing music, which attaches us all. My music is telling you this is the best fun we can have together without killing each other. That’s what’s so beautiful about the rave scene. It’s about understanding other people, no matter what. It’s not ageist, it doesn’t discriminate, the doors are open.” For many, the rave scene will be forever linked with pill-popping, although Carl says he’s always abstained. “I’ve always said music is my drug. I’ve always been clean-living. If I had been taking drugs, I wouldn’t be here today. I’d be in a mental institution. Or dead. I was lucky enough to say no in my early days and to get enough sleep. I’ve got a zest for life and that’s what makes me who I am.” Still. Eight hours! How exactly do you get through an eight-hour set without chemical stimulants? “Red Bull! No, I try not to have too much caffeine. I try to rest as much as I can before I do a long set. Even though (eight hours) seems like a long time, when you’re actually DJing, it goes like that. You get six hours in and all the ones who are still going give you the strength to keep going.” He says he never plans a set beforehand, his choices driven instead by the mood of the room. This puts him at odds with the new generation of “push and play” DJs, who are more concerned with a big pyrotechnical production and have all the music ready and mixed. Still, he says there’s a growing hunger for DJs who know their stuff and can improvise. His label, Intec Records, is dedicated to helping the next generation of DJs get a start. What advice would he give to a young DJ? “It’s all about heart,” he says. “The heart and spirit of who you are is what makes you a good DJ. People can feel the emotion in the music.” ● SEE CARL \ Babylon Festival, February 23-25, 2018, PI C T U R E ● M I C H A E L R AY N E R

In case you hadn’t noticed, the law prohibiting human consumption of hemp in Australia was officially overturned on November 12. And, in an example of peak Australianness, three blokes who own a brewery have celebrated the occasion by making a hemp-flavoured beer. Human consumption of hemp has been banned in Australia since the 1900s due to its association with marijuana. Hemp and marijuana both come from the cannabis sativa plant but hemp uses the non-intoxicating parts. So why hemp-flavoured beer? Co-owner of Melbourne’s East 9th Brewing Benjamin Cairns admits there was a ‘‘because we can’’ element to making Dos Blockos Hempire Hemp Ale, but adds it was also because “hemp delivers a taste profile that no one has experienced before”. The flavour comes via crushed Australian-grown organic hemp seeds added after fermentation. “The hemp brings a delicate, subtle nuttiness and a little smokiness to the ale,” says Benjamin. “It also adds a creamy texture.” When he established East 9th Brewing with mates Stephen Wools and Josh Lefers in 2008, they decided early on a key part of their business plan was to push boundaries. So it’s appropriate that theirs is the first hemp beer on the market here. “We’d tried hemp beer in America and started experimenting more than 12 months ago,” he says. “We wanted to be ready to kick off when the law changed.” ●

Longsong You wouldn’t know that Longsong was a stable in the 1900s if it weren’t for the pot-holed brick floors. Upstairs from Longrain, the van Haandels and former Franklin (Hobart) chef David Moyle have joined up and transformed the mammoth space, adding soaring windows and a ceiling of flickering lanterns. It’s somewhere between a bar and a restaurant. A brestaurant? That could be interpreted as rude, but so could David’s fleshy poached blond sausage with tangy mustard, sauerkraut and a Thai touch from eggplant and shiso. Alongside kangaroo jerky, it makes a mean bar snack with a house spritz. The carpeted dining room also serves snacks, such as barely cooked calamari in inky sauce, beef tartare piled with fried saltbush, and al dente bone marrow potato noodles that slap you with garlic. A handful of larger dishes make it a meal. My only gripes are dessert (choose from grilled mango or grilled mango) and the green leather stools that put cool above comfort. I swear I’m not 75 years old – if I was, I wouldn’t have giggled at David’s sausage. ● ● Longsong ● Upstairs, 44 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne ● 9653 1611

Hangover hacks W
ith the silly season well and truly upon us and the New Year fast approaching, we all know how easy it is for Friday night festivities to get out of hand. If you’ve had a few too many at the office Christmas party and are feeling worse for wear the morning after, here are some of my favourite hangover hacks to ensure that the festive season doesn’t get the better of you. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
The more alcohol we drink, the more we need to head to the bathroom, which contributes to our desperate need for water the next day. Don’t even get me started on that thumping headache! If you’ve forgotten or simply chosen to skip that glass of water between each alcoholic beverage then make sure you increase your water intake as part of
your recovery. A handy tip I learnt from the 28 nutrition team is that adding a ¼ teaspoon of sea or Himalayan salt to your water bottle will help to naturally replace the electrolytes you have lost. REFUEL WITH BREAKFAST
I get it, the glowing sign of the golden arches is virtually calling your name on a sorry Sunday. Do your best to resist the temptation to hit the drivethrough or go wild on Uber eats, and spend an easy five minutes in the kitchen instead. If you are cooking at home then my 28 Classic BLT hits the spot every time (see recipe at right). Let’s face it, though, you might not have the strength to dust off the apron so if you do head down to your local cafe then get yourself some bacon and eggs with a side of spinach and avocado.
GET OUTDOORS
Try to resist the temptation to spend the day on the couch, binge-watching Netflix. Get some fresh air instead. Even just a short stroll outside will help get your blood pumping, help your body rid itself of toxins and release those feel-good endorphins you might desperately need. Take it a step further if you can and get into the ocean. There’s something about salt water that always seems to do the trick. That said, there are some days where you can hardly muster up the energy to move an inch, so depending on just how flat you’re feeling, the best thing could be to just sleep it off. GET AN EARLY NIGHT
When we have too many drinks, our sleep suffers. Chances are your sleep cycle has been seriously

Vine seeker JAKE TA TAYL AYLOR EXPLORES SOME OF THE WORLD’S LESSER-KNOWN WINE REGIONS FINGER LAKES REGION \ NEW YORK, US
It may not ring a bell like California’s Napa Valley, but this fecund, 23,000-square-kilometre region boasts four trails: the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, Seneca Lake Wine Trail, Keuka Lake Wine Trail, or Canandaigua Wine Trail, and more than 120 wineries. Thanks to its cooler climate, comparisons are often made with the German wine regions along the Rhine river and, unsurprisingly, the main variety is Riesling, a vinifera grape that produces both sweet and dry wines. But you can also find excellent Chardonnays and Pinot Noir, too.
Another draw is the stunning landscape, offering breathtaking gorges, waterfalls, and 11 glacial lakes and one Great Lake, making the sipping all that much sweeter. THE BEQAA VALLEY \ LEBANON
While it is considered somewhat off the beaten track, the Beqaa Valley is one of the world’s oldest winemaking regions, with a rich history that began with the Phoenicians and continues with the determined winemakers who kept the region prosperous even through a violent civil war. Located nearly 1000 metres above sea level, the

Many of the vineyards are about an hour drive from Slovenia’s capital, so it is possible to use Ljubljana as a base. However, several of the family run wineries offer accommodation as well as food and tours, so you can fully immerse yourself in this hidden paradise.

hot, dry climate helps to produce everything from Merlot to Viognier, along with rarer grapes like Obeideh and Merwah. With so many superb world-renowned regions such Coonawarra and Yarra Valley, it stands to reason that Australia has a few of its own lesser-known gems. Tumbarumba is one such area, established as a wine destination during the early 1980s and, despite its fledgling status, producing some very fine whites and sparkling varieties, thanks to a cool microclimate and crisp mountain air. Along the Courabyra Road in the foothills of Mount Kosciuszko, 500 kms south-west of Sydney, you’ll find several vineyards producing superb wines, including Courabyra Wines, which also has an award-winning cellar door and restaurant. ●

GRACE PUCCI & AMANDA SIVA SPECIAL PROMOTION
Me & My Mentor
A
cademy of Mary Immaculate year 12 student Grace Pucci and careers practitioner Amanda Siva both know the importance of reaching for your dreams. With Amanda’s support and help, Grace successfully applied for a scholarship to Bond University in Queensland where she will study business and law next year. ● MELISSA HEAGNEY
I’ve been a student at the Academy of Mary Immaculate since year 7 and have been involved in the Senior Student Leadership Team this year. This has enabled me to work closely with school groups like our Justice Group and Earth@Academy Group. I am very passionate about social justice and it’s one of the reasons I want to study a Bachelor of Law and Business next year. I want to help those in need, and I am not only concerned with the welfare of others, but also their rights and entitlements. I want to try to minimize the suffering and distress many go through in difficult times. In an interview with Mrs Siva I discussed the possibilities of studying at universities in Melbourne and interstate. Mrs Siva helped me organise a trip to the open day at Bond University in Queensland. I knew from the minute I stepped onto Bond’s campus that this was where I wanted to study. With Mrs Siva’s help, I completed my application, which included an interview here in Melbourne. In October, I received a phone call at school informing me that I had been successful. I was incredibly thrilled to be one of eight applicants from Victoria, who received an Excellence Scholarship. Mrs Siva has provided me with so much insight and knowledge, not only about universities and job outcomes, but also about what it means to be successful. She has taught me to not worry about what others think of my decisions. This has allowed me to accept that doing something that is a little bit different from everyone else is actually something wonderful and not something to be afraid of. ●
AMANDA SAYS ... I have been at the Academy for two years but I have been a teacher for 17 years in various schools in Victoria, interstate and overseas.
A M A N DA S IVA & G R AC E PU C C I
In 2009 I was teaching media studies and humanities when a position for a career advisor became available. I have always had a passion for student wellbeing and I saw working in careers as an excellent opportunity to develop my skills. Moving into a careers role was a huge learning curve from the beginning. There is so much you need to know in relation to careers, such as scored and unscored VCE certificates, tertiary entry schemes, funding tertiary study, scholarships, VET programs, VCAL, apprenticeships and traineeships, and the changing world of work. As well as working with students, my role requires constant learning and networking. The better you are at both, the more opportunities you can provide for the young people in your care. I am lucky to be part of a fantastic network of

career practitioners and tertiary representatives. It was through these networks that I was able to find the scholarship for Grace. When I found out that Grace was interested in moving interstate and attending Bond University, I approached Bond’s Victorian representative, who offered to accommodate Grace and her father on campus if they wanted to come up and visit on their annual open day. Grace took up the offer and fell in love with Bond. She came to me for advice on various aspects of her scholarship application before she sent it off. We found out on October 9 that she had received the scholarship and Grace was elated. For Grace and her family this is life-changing. It will mean that she can study at the university of her choice without the financial burden often associated with that. ●

It was important then, when renovating their 1946 timber home, that the kitchen was up to scratch. “First I wanted this really big $16,000 oven because sometimes we will have 20 people for lunch, and Brett hit on the brilliant idea of getting two regular ones and putting them side-by-side. It gives me so much flexibility,” says Kylie, who has just released her latest single Body. FEATURE HOUSE SOUTH MELBOURNE \ 114 NAPIER STREET 4

T
he classic facade of this pretty Victorian house hides a huge surprise. Behind what looks like a worker’s cottage is a new cutting-edge layout over two levels with a pool in the garden. And, just to make the whole elegant package even better, the location is excellent – on the edge of the city, close to Clarendon Street, and with a couple of hotels and a neat little park close by. The Royal Botanic Gardens and Albert Park Lake are just a stroll away. Designed and built by Blu Seven, the house is contemporary elegance all the way: the greatest advantage of doing a “walls and all” rebuild is that the designer has no need to compromise to incorporate the old building and is free to work his or her magic. The main bedroom overlooks the parterre garden at the front and has a neat configuration of wardrobes and a stylish en suite. To the other side of the hall is a study with built-in desk and cupboards. A finely crafted staircase of spotted gum with steps outlined by LED lights follows and then the house opens up to the living area. Polished concrete floors and white walls provide an ontrend backdrop for a very stylish family lifestyle. The finely detailed kitchen has concrete bench tops and splash back, floor-to-ceiling cupboards and ranks of drawers. V-ZUG appliances and an integrated Liebherr refrigerator are installed and the island bench segues into a wooden table to seat six. The lounge area, with a gas pebble fireplace, faces north and opens to a bluestone terrace; the salt-chlorinated pool is flanked by hedges and has a waterfall feature. Stylishly incorporated into the terrace is a timber outdoor kitchen with a large fridge, storage and a premium barbecue. Upstairs, three bedrooms, one with a desk and all with built-in wardrobes share a bathroom and family room. Hardwood floors flow through here and rooms are heated by hydronic wall panels. The house has Sonos surround sound, airconditioning, storage under the stairs and a powder room. ● BEVERLEY EVERLEY JOHANSON property@domain.com.au
