Perhaps you share my internal struggle on something far removed from the reality of life, with a day job and bills to pay. I’m intrigued by activist, ex-actress and imminent royal Meghan Markle; however, I support an Australian republic. But, like any balanced diet, I need a little fluff and fantasy alongside politics and “real news”, and so the palace love story is the perfect folly. Once, being a commoner with an engagement ring from a prince was enough to be controversial, but Markle has been more divisive than Kate Middleton before her. Journalist Meg Crawford explores this in our cover feature. ●

SPARKLE of MARKLE CAN THE AMERICAN ROYAL-TO-BE WIN THE WORLD’S HEART?
A
ustralians try to feign a lack of interest in the Crown, but when push came to shove Republicans couldn’t oust the constitutional monarchy in the 1999 referendum, and God knows we love a royal wedding. When Kate and William tied the knot in 2011, an estimated 5.7 million viewers tuned in for the occasion, a figure so large it wasn’t just expats and royalists glued to their screens. Now, with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s nuptials around the corner, interest in palace shenanigans is peaking again, partly because of the pending spectacle, but also because of what Markle represents: as a bi-racial, trouser-wearing divorcee from across the Atlantic with a successful Hollywood career under her belt and a messy bun, the palace has never looked so modern. That said, Markle hasn’t been without her detractors – she’s been criticised for ditching her day job, and picked apart over whether she’s too black or not black enough. On a positive note, the royal wedding as a social barometer shows good progress. For a start, Markle’s warm royal reception is a far cry from the aghast response to fellow American and divorcee, Wallis Simpson, in the 1930s. Happily, we’re also a million miles from the furore surrounding Diana’s virginity, or otherwise, before she was hitched to Prince Charles. Back then, the 19-year-old’s uncle assured the public that Diana’s chastity was intact, which is both gross and unthinkable now. CNN’s royal commentator and palace insider Victoria Arbiter puts our ongoing royal love affair down to the fact that, like it or not, they’re part of our identity as a Commonwealth nation, and a unit like no other. “It’s a politically neutral institution, something that we can all watch in a light-hearted and fascinated way, and it’s removed from celebrity,” she says. “It’s not like watching the train wreck that is the Kardashians, or Married At First Sight. There’s a mystique and fascination that comes from the magic and fairy tale of it.” Arbiter also suspects that the ongoing curiosity
wear tiaras and don’t have to think about money’, and, of course, there’s a tremendous amount of privilege, but with that comes a huge amount of responsibility. You’re never alone, you can’t ever let your guard down, and you can’t nip off for a weekend in Barcelona because you got a last-minute deal. You’re always being judged, you’re funded by the taxpayer, and you’re responsible to the public and the monarchy. There’s a huge element of freedom to relinquish.”
I “We might consider the royal family an outdated institution, but it’s not going to change through one marriage.” vis-a-vis William and Harry is an extension of Princess Di’s legacy. “Many adults today will remember watching those boys walk behind their mother’s coffin – a horrendous image,” she says. “We’ve watched these two boys grow up and become fine men and make their mother and father proud, and it’s giving us an opportunity to see them get their happy ending.” Which, let’s face it, in Harry’s case was looking dubious for a while, what with the constant partying and Nazi uniform incident, but, undeniably, he’s become a lovely lad. That said, a valid question remains: between Harry and Markle, who’s the real catch? “Everybody thinks Meghan’s so lucky, but it takes a particular person to marry into the royal family,” Arbiter says. “People think, ‘oh, you get to live in a palace and

ndeed, as part of taking on the royal mantle, Markle has already forsaken her acting career, which Arbiter describes pithily as, “letting go of that public-celebrity life to embrace a publicroyal life”. In doing so, Markle has raised ire about whether she can still validly claim to be a feminist. Melbourne University’s senior lecturer, Dr Lauren Rosewarne, scoffs at the proposition. “Feminism exists to support women in all of their choices,” she says. “That choice might be to have a career, it might be to stay home and raise children, it might be to do both, but feminists have fought really, really hard for a really long time to give women the opportunity to make their own choices regarding their bodies.” As for the prurient interest in Markle’s bi-racial status, Dr Rosewarne reminds us that we’re not seeing anything new. “We saw exactly the same thing with Barack Obama. It’s this ongoing debate about whether someone is black enough to hold black identity versus how much black is too much.” Ultimately, though, Dr Rosewarne suggests it might be time to cut the royals some slack. “We’re putting a lot of pressure on them to be more modern than they can be. It’s not like any other industry or family, and there’s a rich tapestry of protocols involved. We may not agree with them, and we might consider the royal family an outdated institution, but it’s not going to change through one marriage. The fact that Markle’s there in the first place as an outsider, a commoner, and a mixed-race American makes this incredibly progressive.” ●

The only place you’ll get your hands on La Sirene’s Two Penny Farmhouse Ale is at the Melbourne branch of Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. The Alphington-based brewer has teamed up with the English celebrity chef’s restaurant, to create a beer with a back story. For those not familiar with Dinner’s approach, all the dishes on the menu are modern versions of historical recipes, some dating back to 1390. The beer collaboration is based on an easy-drinking Belgian beer served to field workers in the 18th century because the water was too contaminated to drink. It also references First Fleet convict James Squire, who was one of the first people to brew beer in Australia, which he sold for two pence a pint. La Sirene is hot right now in artisanal beer circles; their farmhouse-style beers are brightly flavoured, refreshing and delicious. It’s what attracted the team at Dinner looking to make a food-friendly style of beer. The bar at Dinner by Heston is open to all, with bookings recommended. Given that it’s a Blumenthal-brand bar, it’s not surprising the bar snacks are interesting. The best are the house crackers, made with duck, kangaroo or celeriac. The meat (or veg) is blitzed with tapioca and spices, then steamed, sliced and dried before being popped into hot oil – good friends with the Two Penny Ale. ●

FOOD
Bar Carolina Sometimes, restaurants forget they’re in the hospitality game. Not so at Bar Carolina, a newish addition to Toorak Road. Run by the team behind Sarti and Il Bacaro, warmth is omnipresent as chatty staff explain the dishes. On the Caroline Street corner, cool young things and men who date them smoke cigarettes over spritzes. There are also premium wines by the glass and plenty of Italians by carafe or bottle. It’s dimly lit inside, but the energy shines. Start with flash-fried octopus, cuttlefish and school-prawn fritto on beetroot mayonnaise, or contemporary vitello tonnato that sees cubes of poached veal stacked beside sashimi tuna and decorated with branches of pickled mushroom. Don’t miss pasta made in house and perfectly pink lamb rump with eggplant and sweetbreads. Or order Josper-baked barramundi to see its salt crust cracked open, tableside. The show continues into dessert; try the tiramisu, it sits on freeze-dried mascarpone and – like the cool young things outside – smokes at the table. ● Bar Carolina ● 44 Toorak Road, South Yarra Y ● 9820 9774 ● barcarolina.com.au BEST FOR \ Second or third date, if good-looking Italian men don’t

your workout. Likewise, having a good stretch at the end of your workout can help to relieve tight muscles and reduce muscle soreness.
’m a huge believer that we should move every day and that’s what our bodies were designed to do. This doesn’t mean you need to do a huge HIIT session, but you should aim to do at least 30 session minutes of physical activity on a daily basis. Once we get to this stage, it becomes more and more important to listen to your body and look after it to ensure you recover properly between workouts. If you’re working out consistently, your body needs time to repair and restrengthen itself. Here are my top tips to allow yourself to recover properly in between workouts.
2. BECOME FRIENDS WITH YOUR FOAM ROLLER \ My foam roller is my best friend and worst enemy. Foam rolling increases blood flow to muscles, creating better mobility. I have a love/hate relationship with jumping on my foam roller to roll out those knots in my muscles and reduce tension. 3. CATCH SOME ZZZS \ Sleep is vital to your recovery and good quality sleep will not only ensure that your body is feeling its best, you’ll also get the most out of your workouts. When we sleep, our energy consumption is reduced, which means the high-quality food we’ve consumed during the day can then be used to efficiently build muscle. Sleeping
1. WARM UP AND COOL DOWN \ I know you’re probably eager to get into your workout but you need to warm up to loosen your joints, increase blood flow to the muscles and get your body prepped to exercise. This will reduce the risk of injury during

ewitchingly sleek and stylish, this contemporary three-bedroom house will appeal to families looking for a sophisticated, low-maintenance lifestyle. The designer touch is evident throughout. The exterior, in stylishly tailored shades of charcoal and grey, makes a sculptural statement. The floor plan maximises natural light and enhances the feeling of space, and the fittings, fixtures and cabinetry are fashionably on point. On the ground floor, the spacious entry hall leads past the garage and well-fitted laundry to an expansive living area sparkling with light. Custom cabinetry houses the television and sliding doors open to a deck that steps down to the rear garden. The kitchen is gorgeous. White cabinetry at floor level contrasts with pale timber cupboards above the benches. The splashback in between is a black-framed window looking out to the garden at the side of the house. Benchtops are stone and there is a fabulous amount of storage in soft-close drawers and cupboards and a ceilingheight pantry. The white island bench is stunning. As well as space to sit, there are timber shelves wrapped around it – perfect for recipe books or statement kitchen pieces. Upstairs, the main bedroom suite is a luxurious zone. The en suite has twin basins and a double rain shower and the walk-in wardrobe is spacious. Other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share the main bathroom with super-smart hexagonal tiles and excellent vanity storage. The house has ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, an intercom system and an alarm. The location is very appealing. Thornbury is an area that is going from strength to strength and has just this month welcomed a new cinema – the Thornbury Picture House in High Street. The brainchild of film producer Gus Berger, it seats 57 and will focus on films and documentaries that might not get a wide release. High Street has an ever-increasing number of cafes, restaurants and bars. The street is also well served for shopping and amenities. In the other direction is the Darebin Creek linear park with its bike and walking trails. The CBD is an easy seven-kilometre commute. ● BEVERLEY EVERLEY JOHANSON property@domain.com.au
