Tale
of Two CenTuries
f
or the owners of this stately home, their love for taking on and committing to grand projects can only be termed as some sort of addiction. In constant need of a challenge and undeterred by sheer size and the restrictions of heritage codes and guidelines, this young family were resolute in their determination to drag the house, Barwon, into the new century. Looking for a house close to the children’s schools, the couple had had their eyes on the historical building for years before being ready to buy. Naturally, they pounced several years ago when they saw it listed for sale and were quick to make plans to restore it into a functional and beautiful family home. Built in 1881 for architect Edmund Ovey, the two-storey Victorian-period house has had just three owners since the Ovey family. The new custodians chose to work within the original floor plan; the only change was to knock over the old tumbledown stables and extend the rear to create a large open-plan kitchen and family living area. With a predilection for mid-century furniture, resulting from their time spent in a much-loved 1950s home in Connecticut in the US, the owners have ensured that the interior design complements the furniture while maintaining the building’s 19th century integrity. Pool room: Table tennis, the winter sport of champions. Bench warmers: The place to share stories at the end of the day.
Initial plans involved rewiring and restumping: there had been no major maintenance since World War II. Living in the house while renovating allowed the family to work out how they wanted to interact with the space. Although trying at times, particularly nine months without a functioning kitchen, it seems there is much appreciation for the end result, with the head chef insisting she will never again complain about cooking. Surprisingly, it is the pool and adjacent pool house that are considered by the family to be the most successful part of the renovation. Used and enjoyed year-round, the area was originally designed with the children in mind. However, it is the adults who arguably appreciate it most and use the space to seek calm and respite from an otherwise active life. As with Michelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel ceiling, craftsmen spent many hours on their backs restoring the 4.3-metre-high ceilings. The formal dining room, with its intricate stencilling, has been returned to its former glory and pays a respectful homage to the house’s past. The use of Eames dining chairs, paired with a contemporary timber dining table, effectively works to complement the heavy period-style of the room and gives it an undeniably fresh perspective. The home reveals many hidden treasures, none more so than the entrance hall, which exposes a section of an original compositional painting seen in the scenic panel painted in the frieze. continues P37 june 27, 2012 \ The weekly review 35

FrOm » P35 Choosing to reveal only a section of the artwork contemporises the space. Abstract works in pops of bright yellow and contemporary rugs work perfectly to ensure the space feels current. Antique White USA in half strength was used for the interior walls and works successfully to tie in the period-style features with the mid-century aesthetic. Tasmanian oak veneers were chosen for cabinetry in the kitchen and living areas, as well as the main bedroom. Pirelli rubber flooring in grey is used in the kitchen, allowing for a seamless flow through to the polished cement floors in the living room. The original pine floors at the front of the house were polished along with the impressively regal, panelled staircase. When pressed to name their favourite pieces of furniture, they agree that while the original Eames chair and ottoman, bought during their time in the US, are well loved, it was the serendipitous discovery in London of the original Gio Ponti chairs, covered in dust and debris, that have become sentimental favourites. After a rather unfortunate circumstance that saw their curated collection of artwork disappearing while in storage, never to be seen again, it is the Gio Ponti chairs that take pride of place in their bedroom and they have become the masterpieces of their collection. The chairs are now a poignant reminder of a time that was fun-filled and carefree. A rather pleasant memory to wake to each morning for anyone. \ smacpherson@theweeklyreview.com.au Style + the City wishes to thank rug provided by Loom (P35) reindeer skin provided by Great Dane (this page).

OBJECT OF DESIRE \ EAMES LOUNGE CHAIR & OTTOMAN
T
he Eames Lounge and Ottoman has become somewhat of an icon as one of the more significant furniture designs of the 20th century. Created in 1956 by famous design duo Ray and Charles Eames, the chair in now on display or put to use in homes, museums and offices. Permanently tilted at 15 degrees, the seat effectively works to take weight off the lower spine while the lower cushion acts to support it. The ottoman, too, while sculptural, was designed to restore normal blood flow after standing or sitting all day. The Eames were clearly concerned with ergonomics and as such pursued the notion of function over form. They are available in either hard-wearing, contract-grade leather or the MCL leather, a premium, semi-aniline, dyed, full-grain leather, which develops a rich patina over time. The softer, more supple leather allows the chair to age beautifully, which adds to the character. New, hand-oiled wood finishes have also been reintroduced to realign with the Eames’ original intention of a chair that ages with character and charm, just as we all should. \ SM

I always love a more eclectic and layered look. My house is filled with hundreds of books, candles, frames of friends and family, and always fresh flowers. I am also a massive hoarder of interesting bits and pieces from my travels – I love objects to have a story, and love creating interesting vignettes. When it comes to creating functions, I love to create a loved and warm feeling that always makes people feel special.
