waste of public money on fripperies and indulgences? The ideologues can’t have it both ways: if an “able” Australian is assumed to know best how to take care of themselves once big government gets out of their way, then the well-informed disabled person must be assumed to know as well. And if governments have to get out of people’s lives, then this might just be the clearest, and most confronting example of that. This is going to represent a big challenge to those who have rigid ideas about what is good spending and what is wasteful. As the old saying goes, until you walk a mile in someone’s shoes – or travel a few k’s in their wheelchair – you won’t have any idea about their experience of the world. Equally, the government must ensure that a program founded on self-reliance is not hollowed out from within by a bureaucracy that wants to dictate terms or sees support programs in limited and predetermined ways. Service providers and care planners will have to let go of the rope: they now guide, they don’t control. If it works, this policy might just be able to provide a prize more precious than rubies: autonomy. \

az Flowers nearly had the Hot Shoe Shuffle tap routines nailed the first time the show toured Australia. Only the carpet in her family’s Morwell home, and her age, hindered her progress. Her dad, Colin, fixed the carpet problem by laying slate in the lounge room. It was a far more satisfying surface for four-year-old Jaz and her brother, Dallas, to perform on as they split the show’s roles between them. Jaz always played Spring Tap, the role played by her idol, David Atkins. The siblings tapped in front of the TV while watching a video of the musical their opera-singer grandmother had taped for them, and they improved their step skills attending mum Vicki’s Dancing Academy in Morwell, Gippsland. Meanwhile Hot Shoe Shuffle moved on to London. It was the first Australian musical to be exported to the West End after its successful premiere tour of Australian cities 21 years ago. The complete Australian cast travelled with it to London, Japan, Canada and the US, and David Atkins and Dein Perry won a British Olivier Award for its exuberant choreography. To mark its 21st anniversary this year, Atkins has brought back Hot Shoe Shuffle for another Australian tour. He is in the cast again – this time playing the role of father Dexter Tap. On stage with him, playing April, will be that little girl from Gippsland, now all grown up and an accomplished performer. “I never thought that Hot Shoe would come back,” says Flowers, now 25. “I never felt as passionate about a show as this one. Nothing in the past 25 years of my existence has influenced me as much as Hot Shoe Shuffle.”

“It’s a really incredible feeling to realise an actual dream you have as a kid is coming true. It was so unexpected to dance alongside my childhood idol. It’s ridiculous; it leaves me bewildered.” Flowers says that on opening night in Brisbane in May, she felt overwhelmed when she came off stage after a triumphant performance. “I was just numb,” she says. “I gave it everything I’ve got. I realised that all my dreams had come to fruition. It sounds clichéd but all my dreams have come true. “I am most happy and comfortable when I am performing; that’s when life makes sense. I don’t know whether I was born to do this but I feel at home most when I perform. It feels right.” Flowers’ first song-and-dance solo was at an eisteddfod as a four-year-old, and her first amateur stage role was at 12 as an orphan in Annie with Latrobe Theatre Company in Traralgon. The company recently staged its own Hairspray. Dance classes continued for many years with her mum, who celebrates 40 years in business this year. Training of her low-C to high-G range began in earnest when Flowers was 17, in her final year at Kurnai College in Morwell. “I didn’t like school much,” Flowers says. “I loved music and I loved drama and that was about it … I always wanted to be a performer.”

all that

Fresh from the success of her first lead role in a musical, as Tracy Turnblad in the long-running Hairspray (directed by Atkins), Flowers says she desperately wanted to win the only female role in Hot Shoe Shuffle, the Tap brothers’ long-lost sister, famously played by Rhonda Burchmore last time around. Flowers says she was well rehearsed and perfectly placed to audition to be a part of the new Tap family, but she was far from confident. “I knew the music, and the dancing was not complicated,” Flowers says. “But my first sing for Hot Shoe didn’t come out anywhere as good as I wanted it to. I was shaking because my idol was sitting right there on the panel. “The other daunting part was being in a room full of six-foot bombshells in four-inch heels. In the casting brief for April it says she has to be beautiful but there’s nothing about height. I had it burned in my head that the part was made for Rhonda Burchmore, a six-foot two-inch glamazon. I told myself, ‘Jaz, you are more Marilyn Monroe than Rhonda’. Rhonda Burchmore and I are not similar in any way. Our voices, our bodies and our acting choices are all different.” Flowers was solo in Sydney when she took the call that delivered the news “that made all my dreams come true”. She celebrated winning the part of April by toasting her success with a mojito at Darling Harbour.

Every Saturday for six months her dad drove her to singing lessons in Bentleigh with theatre performer Susan-ann Walker – a four-hour round trip from Morwell for a half-hour lesson. He also drove her to Ballarat on a seven-hour round trip to see the University of Ballarat’s campus and learn more about its musical theatre course. Flowers says she returned home with a resolve to attain her VCE. “NIDA [National Institute of Dramatic Art] and WAPA [WA Academy of Performing Arts] were too far away,” she says. “Ballarat – I can deal with that. What was hard was the written side of things in a BA degree. I didn’t like that. I didn’t want to focus time and energy on writing an essay.” Since graduating in 2008, Flowers has kept on the move and on stage in major professional musicals: Shane Warne the Musical in 2009, Fame the Musical in 2010 and Hairspray in 2011. She has leapt from ensemble to cast role to lead part from year to year and her achievements have been noted by Atkins, who told those gathered at the Hot Shoe Shuffle Melbourne launch “a star is born”.

“I was just numb. I realISed THaT all my dreamS Had come To fruITIoN.”

“Her introduction to show business came through this show,” Atkins added. Her parents, who attended the Melbourne launch and Hot Shoe Shuffle’s Brisbane opening night, say their daughter has the drive to get where she wants. “Jaz is a different cat,” Colin Flowers says. “She moved out of home at 18 to go off to do the inevitable. She took the bit between her teeth, got an agent and did it on her own. “An opportunity in life comes along and you grasp it. You learn from it and grow from it. If you are lucky it’s part of who you are and what you are.” Flowers says she loves to return home between show tours to see her parents and her dog, Meeka. “I have been living in Sydney for rehearsals, and off and on I’ve been back in Morwell,” she says. “I don’t really have a home base. If I could do the job I love so much in Morwell, I would. I adore being home, where there are only five restaurants to choose from instead of 500.” Hot Shoe Shuffle moved from Brisbane to play in Sydney in July and it opens at Her Majesty’s in Melbourne this month. Flowers has returned to Morwell between tours, something she can’t do with a long-running show that has eight performances a week. “Doing a show in the same city for a year is tough,” she says. “With Hairspray I was in Melbourne for a 10-month run, not including rehearsals. I did one-and-a-half years with that show.” For her performance as Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray, she won a Sydney Theatre Award and a Helpmann Award nomination. “I was pretty much on stage for the three hours of the whole show,” she says. “It was difficult dancing in a fat suit and with that wig under lights, and dancing with 40 other cast members. It was hot but I got used to it. I am a sweater, and the fat suit I had to wear was made of wadding, pillow stuffing and Lycra. “Hot Shoe Shuffle is easier in that I am not on as much as I was in Hairspray but every time I’m off stage I’m into another costume.” Flowers has plenty of glamorous gown moments in Hot Shoe Shuffle and sings big-band Broadway hits from the 1940s, including Gershwin’s How Long Has This Been Going On and Ellington’s It Don’t Mean a Thing. “There’s nothing like singing with a brass band, it’s really cool,” she says. “Give me a big belting solo with the lights on me; I relish that.” \ lhall@theweeklyreview.com.au We Welcome your feedback @

any years ago I was part of a high-school debate where the topic was whether Australia needed a monarchy. Our position was no, negative. At the time I didn’t really understand what it meant to be a constitutional monarchy, and I think we were coached on a bit by our impressive but clearly biased English teacher, Mr Hamilton. Three of us stood up and delivered earnest little speeches about Australia needing to stand on its own two feet. Someone might have mentioned the events of 1975, although I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have been me, but the gist of the argument was it was time Australia worked out who it was and got on with it. We didn’t need this bunch of stuffy old fogeys as our rulers – whether they ruled in theory or practice was irrelevant. Then some bloke from the tech school held up

joyous thing, of course, and always worth celebrating, but surely we need acknowledge the arrival of a royal baby only in a cursory, magazine-fodder kind of way. Here is another pretty little celebrity infant to be admired and photographed, just like the Kardashian baby, its outfits analysed and blogged on a similar scale as, say, Suri Cruise and Harper Beckham. Surely no one actually thinks this child may end up ruling our country, in theory or in practice? Or have I been watching too much Game of Thrones? It seems odd that we cannot accept an Australian female prime minister without picking on her hair and denigrating her private bits, but we curtsey with hallowed respect to some old Englishwoman who breeds corgis and chooses between about six castles to live in at any given time.

My view \ KATRINA HALL HAS ANOTHER GO AT THE ROYALS half a dozen copies of New Idea and Woman’s Day, all with Diana or the Queen on the cover, and said of course we need a monarchy – we are in love with them. That was the precise moment we anxious little republicans were beaten, and pretty much fair and square. Who can argue with the cover of New Idea? This was 1981. My mum had a Lady Di hairdo and we were all lusting after white deb dresses with big puffy Diana sleeves. Diana fever had taken hold of us all. Our defeat was easier to swallow then than at the 1999 referendum, but that’s a whole other complicated story. But what I can’t believe is, decades later, and despite the fact the royal family kind of imploded there for a bit, our world is still the same. Last week a woman on the street stopped me and asked if I’d heard any news about the royal baby. Had it come? Did I know anything? Why, oh why, did she care that much? A new life is a

I’m not ready for aged care, I just need a little help with the washing.

The British press called Paul Keating the “Lizard of Oz” when he, shock horror, put his arm around the Queen for a photograph. There was similar conjecture when Michelle Obama touched her. I repeat, touched her. Surely, it’s not really us any more, this worshipping the British monarch thing. At any rate, the Queen has 53 other countries to be Queen for. Do we really think she’d be that fussed if we just took quiet leave for a bit? Especially now she’s a great-grandma … PS: The boy from tech school went on to become a successful newspaper photographer. He knew, even at the age of 16, that the media and the royal family would forever be intertwined, but not always in a good way. \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.au we welcoMe your feedback @

ust. Espuma. Savoury marshmallows. Pseudo bacon. To listen to the waiters’ elaborate descriptions of each arriving plate, you’d think St Crispin was a throwback to the crazy days of molecular gastronomy. But don’t panic. There is method to the occasional food-science madness of Scott Pickett and Joe Grbac – two talented chefs who hail, respectively, from Northcote’s exalted Estelle Bar and Kitchen and the late Press Club. Sure, they might kick off with an oiled wafer of crisp potato layered with dots of tomato mousse and vinegar “dust”, but the important thing is it tastes terrific. Much like everything on the menu here. St Crispin is named after the patron saint of shoemakers, a nod to the cobbler who once occupied this Smith Street site, and a neat fit with the neighbouring St Mark’s, patron saint of notaries, lions and op shops. More recently the site was home to Cavallero, which closed suddenly and left Pickett, Grbac and Co. just 10 days to renovate and launch what may well be Smith Street’s best restaurant. The long, lofty space will feel familiar to those who knew Cavallero but the finishes are mostly new. Behind the green marble bar lurk serious cocktails ranging from agave syrup margaritas to “perfect” G&Ts containing capsicum, of all things. Dining settings are comfortable, Scandi-style timber and leather seating, banquettes and handmade oak tables, with Italian stools at the bar. The place has been packed on both my visits but the staff ensure service is as smooth as the mood-enhancing playlist of Sam Cooke, Petula Clark and 10cc. The menu is a two- or three-course deal priced at $50 and $60 that, given the food quality, is solid value. In keeping with feeding fads they’ve also introduced a range of Little Bites to begin, from oysters to eel croquettes and something called Snap Crackle and Pop – twice-cooked pig skin dredged in “pseudo bacon”, a flavoured dust that tastes of cured pork. The concept is so wrong but it tastes so right. I’ve yet to find a dud dish. Early standouts include a starter of pullet egg, mushrooms, Parmesan, goat’s curd and black rice. The egg is soft-cooked at 63.5 degrees; the Parmesan is both an “espuma” (foam) and jellied squares of cheesy consommé; the mushroom is hunks of cakey sponge that look like torn bread, and a pile of sautéed fungi beneath; the black venere rice is puffed and crunchy (and, according to my web search, it possesses amazing anti-ageing properties; I’ve ordered a sack for home). The textures are playful – fluffy foam, crunchy rice, spongy fungi, and gooey, warm egg – and the flavours fuse beautifully. Then there’s the veal cheek, gelatinous and sticky in the mouth, teamed with a crisp, slightly smoky wedge of belly and the cloying indulgence of pan-fried thymus gland. A sweetbread surprise. The meats sit on a purée of miso eggplant, with broccoli, cigarette-sized macaroni and toasted almonds for company. Positively salivatory. As is the winelist. This leather-bound document is a fine match for the calibre of food, with a choice of grapes and styles from across the winemaking world. We’re tossing up between a French viognier, a Spanish

ention Tasmania in wine circles and you can be sure the first words people utter will be pinot noir and chardonnay. These are grapes that thrive in the margins and Tasmania’s cold climate provides the perfect environment to produce still and sparkling wines from them. Their star is certain to burn brighter as young vines age. But mentioning only these grapes does a disservice to other varieties that are being championed by producers who see potential for other grapes to thrive. Unlike Victoria, which has nearly 20 wine regions, the whole island is a single region – or appellation, as the French call it – and a diverse range of soil types and micro-climates means that many grapes thrive. Early Tasmanian vineyards – we’re talking the 1970s – were actually planted with grapes such as cabernet and riesling, while the first pinot noir and chardonnay grapes were planted with sparkling wine production in mind. “There was a big push for cabernet in the ’70s and ’80s, but you don’t see many of them around now,” says Bay of Fires winemaker Peter Dredge. “Early on everyone was in a trial period and people planted a little bit of everything and, sooner or later, realised what worked in those areas. Pinot and chardonnay have performed and so has riesling – it’s one of the little gems that has come to the fore. “There’s a lot of old-vine riesling around Tasmania. We know from regions such as the Mosel in Germany, which is actually a little colder than Tasmania, that you can actually do some pretty good things.”

Dredge suggests people became impatient with grapes such as cabernet because pinot noir is a more consistent performer in the vineyard. “You’ve got to accept the fact that you’re going to lose a couple of vintages out of every 10, so there is risk,” he says. “On the east coast and little pockets of the Derwent and Coal River valleys, you get a decent amount of sunlight and heat throughout the summer, so you can ripen these varieties successfully.” Dredge says the early winemakers soon realised that many Tasmanian sites were better suited to table wines. Two distinct weather patterns play a part in growing conditions, limiting the range of suitable grapes. “The east coast is moderated by the weather systems coming down the east coast of the mainland and it’s quite similar to the Victorian micro-climate,” Dredge says. “Down the middle, the Tamar and Huon Channel and the Derwent valleys are moderated by the prevailing westerlies. “Then there’s soil types. The Derwent and Coal River valleys are alluvial and the east coast is a big volcanic dolerite upsurge.” Look out for varieties such as pinot gris, riesling and shiraz grown on Tasmania’s alluvial spine, while fine examples of cabernet sauvignon and its friends from Bordeaux – merlot and cabernet franc – are found on the east coast. Tasmania’s wine producers head to Melbourne on August 5 for Tasmania Unbottled. From 5pm they’ll pour pinot noir, chardonnay and other unsung varieties at Fed Square venue Zinc. \ bthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au

Bay of Fires Pinot Gris 2012

(Tasmania) $25; 12.4% ★★★★ PURe

Grown in the Tamar Valley, this is Tasmania’s only example of the white grape that originates from Italy’s Piedmont region. This smells great – there’s a lovely perfume to the pear, lemon rind, nectarine and spice bouquet. Steely and focused, with a bright line of salty, mineral-laced acid, its green melon and lemon flavours don’t impose themselves until the finish, when they sign the wine off with an intense bang.

Glaetzer-Dixon Mon Père Shiraz 2011

Grey Sands The Mattock 2012

The previous vintage of this wine won the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy a couple of years ago and this is a delicious follow-up. Cool-climate shiraz is one of my favourite wine styles and this ranks up there with Australia’s finest. It’s stalky and smoky, with perfumed aromas of cherry, violet, spice, squished blueberry and pepper that are mirrored on the elegant, complex palate. A silky texture, matched with vibrant acid and super-fine tannins, helps the wine flow seamlessly along the tongue to a lengthy, juicy forest berry finish.

There’s nothing on the label that indicates the grape varieties, but this is a blend of merlot, malbec and 10 per cent cabernet franc – grapes that aren’t always associated with cool-climate Tasmania. Grey Sands is no ordinary producer though – its merlot is one of Australia’s best. Medium-bodied, it’s full of floral rose petals, redcurrants and blood plum, with nutty oak and a touch of pencil shavings. With a lovely, well-poised structure, fine-grained tannins drive a lengthy finish.

ViBRaNT

Delightful floral aromas of blossom, musk, spice and pear, freshly sliced, with the added complexity and richness of slices found in a lunchbox at the end of a school day. There’s a citrus brightness that lifts the sweet pear and spice flavours into balance. The best pinots gris have a slippery nature and this has it in spades, with a smooth texture, lively acid and a chalky tannic grip. The wine may slip down tremendously, but it lingers with some persistence.

From the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania, FGR stands for 40 grams residual sugar, which puts this squarely in off-dry riesling camp. It’s wonderfully perfumed, with a highly floral bouquet that includes citrus blossom, lime cordial, minerality, new-season apples and pears. In the mouth this is a model of intensity and balance. The sugar adds palate weight and is superbly balanced by intense acid and a gently, barely there spritz before it powers to a long, memorable finish. Food match \ Pork schnitzel

here is just no loyalty in the body-care market. We are programmed to pay top dollar for face moisturisers with the promise of what can be achieved with the latest and greatest. But when it comes to moisturisers for the body, we couldn’t care less. A quarter of people who use body-care products at least once a week usually just buy what’s on sale, according to a recent study by Chicago-based researcher Mintel. A whopping 81 per cent say that they use body moisturisers without fail. Surprisingly, with all the countless body products available, 27 per cent of consumers say they are yet to find a lotion that works well for them. In Australia, although research is scarce, we can assume the trend is similar. The lust for body moisturisers is not without warrant, especially in winter. Joseph Fowler, clinical professor of dermatology at

the University of Louisville, says: “Adequate hydration of the outer-most layer of the skin serves three major functions: it maintains plasticity of the skin, protecting it from damage; it allows hydrolytic enzymes to function in the process of skin shedding; and it contributes to optimum skin-barrier function.” Body moisturisers have been used since time immemorial and the main ingredients have either been animal or plant fat mixed with perfume. Fowler says things are different these days. “Over-the-counter moisturisers can be categorised into three classes: emollients, which soften and smooth the skin; occlusives, which provide a barrier that sits on the surface of the skin and prevents transepidermal water loss; and humectants, which bind and hold water in the stratum corneum,” he says. \ dnaidu@theweeklyreview.com.au

Moisturisers alone cannot prevent dry skin You must also avoid over-exposure to dry air such as heaters and air-conditioners Limit hot showers and baths Avoid prolonged contact with chlorinated water Use a gentle cleanser Moisturise frequently, especially after a bath or shower Wear appropriate clothing in cold weather, such as insulated gear, scarves and gloves.

WALL StREEt ShUFFLE \ 1995

A sentimental favourite and the first photo I ever had framed. It was 1995 and my first visit to Wall Street, a remarkably small strip for one with such clout. I spied this merry band of locals at lunch hour and instinctively snapped. Not until weeks later, in a Prague darkroom, did I see the finished result, and smile. I love the symmetry. My late father, who did 38 years of shiftwork at Kodak, mixed the emulsion that coated this negative. That means a lot.

During the height of Melbourne’s drought, nothing lifted my spirits like a protracted downpour. This 2006 summer shower was so torrential, I pulled over in High Street, Northcote. I grabbed the 70-200mm lens, crawled into the back seat and pressed the shutter in between sweeps of the windscreen wipers. All the while a Tindersticks CD played. Bliss!

I’ve always loved Winter Solstice gatherings. Something about pagan rituals, bonfires and mulled wine really does it for me. These days I go to Montsalvat, but I used to lose a top layer of facial skin in front of the raging bonfire at Collingwood Children’s Farm. I’ve always wondered what this kid’s expression was: Awe? Terror? Glee? Mine was a combination of all three, with cheeks reddened by a combination of heat and shiraz.

In 2011, my camera and I were caught in a downpour on New York’s Seventh Avenue, sans umbrella. We took our chances, crazily snapping more intelligent passersby in the glorious twilight rain. After towelling off in a nearby restaurant, we went back for more. It never occurred to me to buy a brolly. Sure enough, I woke feeling crook the following morning, but not so my tough, trusty Canon.

uppet shows are jolly, bright affairs, right? So why does veteran Canadian puppeteer Ronnie Burkett have a reputation for darkness? That would be because his shows are made for adults and feature some grim subject matter. Czech puppeteers risking their lives to present politically subversive performances under Nazi occupation was the true story that inspired the first show Burkett brought to Melbourne more than a decade ago, Tinka’s New Dress. Then there’s the world’s end, which is the setting for the fourth show he’s staging here, Penny Plain. “When people refer to me as dark, I think they’re responding to a feeling they have about the show or the characters or the ideas – and that’s fantastic,’’ says Burkett. “But I don’t think I’m a very dark guy; I have chandeliers! I have puppet books!” Burkett and I are sitting beneath those rather grand, old-fashioned chandeliers in his Toronto workshop. Just as a wickedly camp sense of humour lights up his shows’ dark themes, these twinkling fixtures are dashes of whimsy in a predominantly utilitarian space – including shelves for 1400 neatly arranged puppetry books. “I’m attracted to angels and demons in people. I’m interested in either a premise, like in Penny Plain, where there’s something awful going on that people have to rise up above or give in to, or characters that have either light or dark inside of them. But, yeah, in terms of puppetry I am sort of viewed as the dark lord of weirdness,” Burkett says with a laugh. An internationally renowned dark lord of puppetry. Could Ronnie Burkett be the inspiration for John Malkovich’s transformation into an acclaimed, if kooky, puppeteer in Being John Malkovich? Burkett admits he doesn’t know, but in any case identifies more with the film’s busking puppeteer than Malkovich’s “art puppeteer … because I’ve always been working. I’m always schlepping stuff around and doing shows”. “Always” is no exaggeration, as Burkett has been a professional puppeteer since he was 14. It was inevitable for the boy who had discovered puppetry in an encyclopedia seven years earlier, and boldly announced that this was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. Little Ronnie’s fate was sealed when he saw The Sound of Music soon afterwards, and was entranced by The Lonely Goatherd marionette scene – the creation, as it turned out, of a man featured in that fateful encyclopedia entry, Bil Baird. “I stalked him through my childhood, and he finally relented and hired me when I was 19,” recalls Burkett. “I knew there were people with the information I wanted, so I was relentless getting it out of them.” Another puppeteer who has greatly influenced Burkett is Josef Skupa, the inspiration behind Tinka’s New Dress and its companion piece, The Daisy Theatre. “He died three months before I was born, but I feel a

constant kinship with him,” says Burkett. “I’ve made it my work over the last 15 years to know everything about him that I can find.” Learning from the past is something he encourages young puppeteers to do. “They need to find a dead mentor,” says Burkett. “They need to fall in love with some puppeteer from the past who inspires them, and then find out everything they can. Because nothing is new. There was more sophisticated puppetry going on at the turn of the 20th century than there is now.”

This puppet master is not against learning from the living, however. Burkett has formally shared what he admits is his “encyclopedic knowledge of puppetry” at institutions such as the Victorian College of the Arts. He taught a series of workshops there in 2007, when puppetry chief Peter Wilson described Burkett as “one of the great puppetry artists of all time’’. During his VCA stint, “the puppetry community in Melbourne just grabbed me and dragged me out”, says Burkett, who describes the city’s puppetry scene as huge. “Also, one of my best friends is a performer from Melbourne, Meow Meow … so I feel I know some of the theatre-music-cabaret scene in Melbourne through her.” With connections extending from his first visit here in 2002, which he fondly remembers because of Tinka’s enthusiastic reception, to teaching a Melburnian now performing in King Kong, Burkett can feel this city tugging at his strings. Now the dark lord of weirdness returns, with an apocalyptic tale told by a blind old landlady, her rooming house tenants, and a talking dog or two. “I’m itching to go on the road again,” says Burkett, who has – unusually – been in Toronto for more than a year. “Watch out, Melbourne!” he declares, grinning broadly, eyes gleaming with the same enthusiasm as the boy who discovered puppetry five decades ago. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au see » Penny Plain is presented at the Geelong

hen Eliza and John Morley bought their Edwardian house in 2007, they could see immediately it had potential. Although it had undergone a typically unflattering renovation in the 1970s, which had resulted in false ceilings and inadequate living spaces, the house still had many positive attributes – good solid bones, period features, a generous block size and an excellent location. Unlike many enthusiastic renovators, who blindly jump straight into the design process, the Morleys were determined to live in the spaces first. “After living in the house we decided we wanted to make total use of the block,” says Eliza. “We wanted a design extension that would let in as much light as possible and be a great entertaining area for the kids.” continues » P33

… a flexible space for retreat or separation, depending on what the moment dictates

Open plan: The monochromatic interiors are punctuated by bursts of colour – seen in the oversized artwork by Dale Frank, the textured rug by Behruz Studio and flowers by Fleur McHarg. Family affair: Eliza, John and their three daughters, love their beautiful new interiors, which balance classic principles with contemporary flair.

From » P31

Creating a flexible home for a family that keeps growing during the design process is always tricky, especially when you’re doing the renovation without an architect. But the Morleys had a couple of advantages up their sleeve. As a builder and principal director of Morcon Developments – a high-end house-building company – John has an intuitive understanding of structure and form. Add this to Eliza’s sharp eye for design – she worked for many years in the fashion industry – and what you have is a design-savvy pair who were able to effortlessly inject new life into this period house. Inspired by the couple’s European travels, the interiors of this Malvern house are rich with detail. Avoiding the white, Scandinavian palette that is so often used in period houses, the couple bravely embraced the greys that are more commonly associated with French and Belgian interiors. Pairing this with distressed American-oak floorboards, Luxembourg linen curtains, and textured Belgian sisal carpet, the interiors ooze European chic.

To the right of the unadorned hallway is the couple’s bedroom, en suite and walk-in wardrobe. In an effort to return the house to its former glory, John pulled out false windows and put in large heritage-inspired bay replacements. A window seat below is complemented by beautiful cushions from French textile designer Genevieve Levy, of Manon bis. Opposite the main suite is a sitting room and study, which offers a flexible space for retreat or separation, depending on what the moment dictates. Warm and intimate, this room perhaps best reflects the original intentions of the Edwardian architects. “This is a beautiful room to sit in, because you have an open fireplace and you get this amazing north-face light streaming in through the bay windows. “It is a great aspect of the old house,” says John. Adding warmth are the contrasting material and colour palettes. The rustic timber found in the Graham Geddes light-fitting plays beautifully off the burnt yellows in Graham Fransella’s painting. continues » P34 july 31, 2013 \ The weekly review 33

From » P33

As you move through the front part of the house, the period Edwardian elements gradually give way to refined modern detailing. The back extension is bright and contemporary, with the living spaces arranged around the kitchen in a relaxed but sophisticated style. The kitchen is particularly handsome, with crisp white cabinetry, Carrara marble benchtops, and a window splashback that infuses the room with greenery. The standout feature here is the dramatically suspended glass rangehood, custom-designed by John. Most of the lower level’s rear wall is made of glass, which slides away with the touch of a button. This seamlessly connects the living area to the garden. Upstairs are bedrooms for the couple’s three daughters – Zoe, 8, Matilda, 6, and Charlotte, 3. Like the rooms below, each of the bedrooms has its own individual quirks and accessories, such as French bed linen, artwork, contemporary bedside tables and vintage timber chairs. Elegant without being ostentatious, pared-back without being minimalist, this Edwardian house is the result of careful consideration and planning. It is warm, contemporary, and simply joyful. \ fcarter@theweeklyreview.com.au get the look » P36

isn’t a game-changer for many people, but for Frank Novembre, the search for a coffee table more than 25 years ago set his life on a new course. Frustrated by the lack of fine furniture in Melbourne, the then-banker was trying to order a coffee table through the catalogue of French brand Grange. When he asked the staff in France if they had an Australian agent, they suggested he take on the role. A trip to France and a containerload of furniture later, he was ready to set up shop as Grange’s Australian agent. His brave move paid off – Domo now has seven shops across the country including the original shop on Camberwell Road, which is run by passionate, knowledgeable sales staff, including Alec Gabbett (pictured).

what’s in store While Novembre originally represented only Grange, Domo now stocks and represents other brands of furniture and homewares, many of them exclusive to Domo in Australia. The shop caters for traditional, classic tastes, as well as contemporary, design-focused modern styles. Pieces range from the practical – such as stackable outdoor furniture by Dedon and modular bookcases by Grange and Marchetti – to the more decorative: think Designers Guild cushions printed with maps of “Lacroix Island” and wall art from Ibride of France depicting portraits of ravens and rabbits in Elizabethan ruffs. who’s visiting Industry types such as architects

and interior designers find inspiration in the extensive, well-curated range, but there’s plenty to tempt others. After years supplying pieces to customers in Camberwell, Hawthorn and beyond, Domo has many regulars, among them long-time clients who are downsizing and second-generation shoppers who remember their parents buying at the shop. \

“From the outside they speak of a lampshade that’s 100 years old, but when you look under the skirt, it has one of the most advanced LED assemblies on the market,” LeAmon says. When lampshades first came into use, they were employed in a domestic setting to conceal harsh electric light bulbs which were gaining increasing popularity in homes. LeAmon hopes that her towering take on the original design will twirl out of the home and into new environments. “You only do a lampshade this tall if you’re going to put it into somewhere sensational. I’d love to see one in the foyer of the Australian Ballet.” When LeAmon and colleague Edmund Carter were tasked with the unusual design brief of refurbishing six lift cars within the St James development in the city, they drew inspiration from the golden age of art deco. “The roaring ’20s were an expression of optimism,” she says. “Industry, identity and embedding narrative in commercial production was really taking off. Many of the first commercial elevators were highly crafted, bespoke interiors with a lot of love, care and attention. They were rooms unto themselves; they weren’t purely utilitarian, which seems to be pervasive today.” Given free rein, LeAmon and Carter used Corian and walnut veneer to return a sense of luxury to the lifts, which they christened Dayorama. The panelled walls strongly suggest the deco style, and are complemented by a space-age, electroluminescent glass wall that engages passengers in small talk, asking them questions such as how their day is going. “The idea was to do something incredibly generous and entertaining for the people who hop into these elevators, whether they’re just getting to work or heading home, marking their arrival and departure of the building,” LeAmon says. “I’m very fond of this project. Who would think of an elevator as

something exciting and potentially transformative?” For her latest project, again with Carter, she is designing an “Arts Walk” for St Kilda Road’s Arts Centre, loosely inspired by the stars on LA’s Hollywood Boulevard. “We’re not doing stars,” she says. “Hollywood owns celebrity, and the star was born there. That’s not what Melbourne, or the Arts Centre is about. Melbourne is about culture. It really appreciates artistic excellence and creativity.” In their discussion, LeAmon and Carter kept coming back to the idea of shining a spotlight on the country’s cultural icons, from Dame Nellie Melba to Kylie

Minogue. They finally settled on a spotlight shape and decided that rather than simply name those honoured, they would quote them. “We embedded their voices in the spotlight,” LeAmon says, smiling. “People can come across these quotes about creativity, and may discover somebody who isn’t necessarily a household name, but is incredibly important in enabling this vibrant, cultural city. It’s not only an honour call, like the Hollywood Boulevard, but also a discovery walk.” \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.simoneleamon.com

IRONIC ICONIC \ RACHEL BERGER FINDS HopE … Weeping during the nightly news on television while eating your dinner will give you dyspepsia. After ingesting reports about the toxic effects of Australia’s growing income inequality, asylum-seeker policy, the downturn in the mining industry and the lack of transparency in our justice system, my stomach makes creaking noises all night. It’s hard to know where to look at this time of political polarisation and “gotcha” power games in Canberra. Recently, while standing at the corner of William and Lonsdale streets in the CBD, I looked up at the six-metre sculpture Lady of Justice, above the front entrance of the County Court. She’s awesome (in the old language). Despite the stress and bleak information my brain was juggling, I felt grounded and safe. Justice is a big word; the message I got from this sculpture was that through dialogue and how we interact and listen to each other, it is possible to be open to different solutions. Sure, I’d had a big dose of B vitamins with breakfast, but I’ve knocked on the door of failure too many times to be overly confident or starry-eyed. William Eicholtz’s Lady of Justice (2002) made from cast and plate aluminium, is potent. In his words, this “combination of highly detailed drapery and smooth flat areas evokes an image of Grecian relief sculpture – and perhaps of ruins pieced back together. The image is of a strong, mature female figure, described by her sumptuous robes. Her face, feet and arms are devoid of detail, indicating no specific age, race or religion. The

Victorian Southern Cross is at her side, making her a symbol of fairness and equality in this state.” A goddess of justice has existed in many cultures as far back as the ancient Mesopotamians. Greek goddess Themis – able to foresee the future – was recognised as the goddess of divine justice. She’s often depicted without a blindfold because of her clear-sightedness and prophetic skills. The Roman goddess of justice Justitia, on which Eicholtz’s sculpture is themed, is usually depicted blindfolded, holding a sword and scales. The

sword in her right hand is double-edged, symbolising the power of reason and justice, which can be wielded either for or against any party. The blindfold indicates that justice is not subject to influence. The scales represent the impartiality with which justice is served. She symbolises “the fair and equal administration of the law, without corruption, avarice, prejudice or favour”. Why bother with all this symbolism and history? Well, Justice together with Prudence, Fortitude, and Temperance form a quartet called the Cardinal Virtues. (What happened to Tolerance – why wasn’t she at that meeting?) These virtues – mentioned in sources from the Old Testament to Socrates and Plato – are considered the cornerstones of Western philosophy. Perhaps now more than ever, we need to remember that by listening openly and responding equally to each other’s rights and needs, we may be able to reduce the opportunity for an us-and-them attitude.

1 \ Birrarung Wilam Birrarung Wilam, meaning river camp, is a stone, wood, stainless steel, bronze, nickel and audio installation by indigenous artists Vicki Couzens, Lee Darroch and Treahna Hamm (2006) celebrating the physical and spiritual connections between indigenous people and place. The underlying philosophy is gulpa ngawul – best translated as “deep listening”, to cultural knowledge, stories and practices – and revitalising them through the reinterpretation of tradition and the site. The sense of place is genuinely kinesthetic among these separate but connected components; the puulwuurn (mound campsite), the eel pathway, two message sticks, five shields, a group of ancestor stones, interpretative panels, water vessels and an audio installation.

Tilly Aston was the first blind person in Australia to attend university but her education was cut short by a lack of textbooks in Braille. In 1894, she established a Braille library and a year later founded the Association for the Blind (which became Vision Australia Foundation), the aim of which was to improve the quality of life for the blind through self-help rather than charity. Her efforts gained free post for Braille and talking books for the blind, free travel on public transport and the right to vote. When you approach Anton Hasell’s interactive bronze sculpture in Kings Domain, the bell movement sensors trigger a series of tolls. Fittingly, the inscription on one bell is in Braille.

Formerly a bowling green, Veg Out is a St Kilda institution – an organic, chemical-free garden plot run by volunteers. In an area where so many residents live in flats and have such a low ratio of open space per person, the community garden offers more than just an opportunity to squirm at worms and dig into dirt. More than 140 individually decorated garden plots, with murals, mosaics and paving, chooks, rabbits, an orchard and other shared garden spaces create the ideal location to meet up with other members, friends, family and community groups and share organic pest-repellent recipes. Veg Out has no rigid boundaries between common land and individual plots. \ boomboom@rachelberger.com Follow Rachel on Twitter @boom_berger

Unmistakably, Irresistibly, Gillespie

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Every element of this elegant inner city residence reflects the confidence and creativity that defined the Wayne Gillespie way.
