my vieW \ how katrina hall became fluent in flu

L

(istockphoto \ thinkstock)

we thrive on our winter epidemics

adies and gentlemen, welcome to the sick season. The kids’ schoolyard is empty, teachers are absent, the soccer team is minus 10, and I’m getting “so and so has gone home unwell” emails all day. Over here, we’ve had one kid home from school all week with intermittent fever and a raging sore throat. I know man-flu is a recognised phenomenon, but in our house we also have the kid-flu. She’s dying, of course – the other night, while I administered Panadol at 3am, she asked if I thought she might survive this thing. Yes, honey, I said, but I’m not sure I will. There’s no denying she’s sick. She has aches and pains, a grotty cough, and no appetite for anything except icy poles and crackers. I’m just not convinced she is quite as sick as she sounds. What I’m hearing are these delicate, shaky, something-terrible-is-happening-to-my-body moans, and when I go to her expecting to find some dire turn of events – severe vomiting, a blocked artery perhaps – she says, “Oh, I’m just sooooooo hot”, or “I’m just sooooo thirsty”, or “I’m just sooooooooo tired but I can’t sleep”. If man-flu is defined by a masculine propensity to exaggerate cold and flu symptoms, then kid-flu is made three times worse because, while they’re lying around on the couch demanding lemonade and tissues, they are also moaning about missing out on stuff. Strange, but my kids really like school. They don’t want to miss out, not so much on the schoolwork but on rehearsals for concerts – and then there’s sport and music and art. Even unlimited access to Minecraft is not cutting it right now. Actually, you’d think unlimited access to her parents might also have cheered her up, because all week one of us has had to stay home with her, which strangely didn’t

seem to rock her boat at all. For us as kids, getting a day off to watch Days of Our Lives and eat boiled eggs with mum made being sick so much easier to swallow. She has just asked me what day it is, and when I said Thursday she almost cried because it’s sausage roll day in the school tuckshop. I’ve also been submitted to a barrage of questions about what I think they might be doing at school right now. Sometimes, I think she’d actually like me to ring and find out. Anyway, we’ve just been to the doctor and, since he told her she wasn’t going to die, she’s picked up a bit. We went to the bakery and got a sausage roll. Now she’s watching Harry Potter, and laughing. Melbourne thrives on its winter epidemics. It brings us together. It is our shared pain. This week I’ve discussed the colour of nasal emissions with the lovely lady in the chemist, had a to-give-antibiotics-or-not-togive-antibiotics discussion with mums at school, and listened in detail to my friend outline the development of her son’s tonsillitis. I was actually interested. And I’ve been part of conversations about temperatures (my daughter’s friend told me one of hers was 41.6 and she didn’t even faint), compared really bad middle-of-the-night asthma stories, and got a bit competitive about how many times we’ve had to ring the nurse-on-call service at 4am. This might go on for a while now. Because the reality is, as soon as one kid starts to recover and get back into the school routine, the other will come down with it. Then, so will the man in the house. Oh, spare me. \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.au We Welcome your feedback @

ummer came and went and, despite intention, this reviewer didn’t manage to dine at South Wharf, a precinct I had intended to keep an eye on. Somehow I’m back again mid-winter. And it still feels like the doors to many of the refurbished cargo sheds are starkly closed against the climate: financial; environmental; diner whimsy, take your pick. But there are patches of warmth around Common Man, where I’ve had a couple of decent winter meals, at a slowly emerging coffee franchise and in the AstroTurf-ed, bicycle-enhanced bling that surrounds Thai-style eatery BangPop. It was, briefly, The Sharing House, a fine-dining concept that never really filled seats this far south of the city. At time of writing, Paul Mathis and Frank De Rango were still the managing directors of BangPop, its four-month-old successor, and other restaurants including neighbouring Akachochin, Firechief and Goldilocks in Hawthorn and Henry & the Fox in Little Collins Street. But there have been newspaper stories about the troubled Mathis empire. His spokesman insisted these were inaccurate, but did confirm one of the directors soon would be departing. That makes for uneasy staff. But in the lively, vibrant BangPop space crowds seemed steady, if not heaving, and the waiters genuinely cheery. A nearby couple ordered confidently and snapped photos of their dishes. They ate quickly, laughed a lot and left. Another duo sat on the floor beside us to play with the Lego blocks that wrap around the bar. That installation cost a reported $12,000 as part of the original design, so it was good to see it getting some use. On pretty plates with curly garnishes, BangPop’s food is flashy and fast to the table. In and out quickly, as you would at a street stall – or so that you’ve got time to get back to business at the DFO, The Plenary or the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Dishes borrow myriad elements from Thai street food – names, ingredients and complex flavour combinations – and there’s a spice-level warning on the menu. But curry pastes are made in a Pacojet, and classically trained chef Kam McManamey (ex Dandelion) admits he employs sous vide techniques, too. Grilled turmeric chicken ribs (kai khmin yang nam prik pla raa), the poultry marinated in the mild spice with white pepper and fish sauce, will appeal to the non-spice lovers. Their stouter counterparts will be enamoured of the generous serve of pla ra, a fermented fish paste and chilli-enhanced relish that adds a robust, earthy element to the dunked ribs. A side of vibrant mint, basil and other herbs recruits another layer of flavour receptors. Post-ordering, four little white pots are delivered, bearing condiments to add sweet, spicy, salty or sour elements to the food: sugar, chilli, fish sauce and red wine vinegar. It’s interactive, pseudo-authentic, and fun. So are the Bangkok-inspired cocktails. We recommend the Tom Yam Siam – vodka, lychee

and lime juice, garnished with lime leaf and chilli. Any Thai restaurant claiming bona fide heat levels is a challenge to spice cowboys. The jungle curry (gaeng bpaa kai – chicken, wood ear mushrooms and young bamboo) is BangPop’s hottest, our helpful waiter informs us. I’m no cowboy – not even in the line of duty. I go lower down the spice chain to the yellow fish curry (gaeng leung tai). Barramundi was the catch of the day, dressed with pla grop – a curl of flash-fried salted fish. Turmeric, chilli, kaffir lime, lemongrass, shallots and garlic gave it definite fire and intensity. We experimented with the flavour enhancers, adding sugar and fish sauce to adjust the heat and augment the greens. Stir-fried Chinese broccoli and crispy pork belly “croutons” – slices of finely treated pork belly with crunchy caramelised edges – tossed with oyster sauce, chilli and garlic were a pleasing chaser to the comparably one-dimensional curry. Texture, spice,

sweetness and elements of salt were all present. We didn’t need to fiddle. Salads are this reviewer’s Thai food penchant. The cooler temperature of the ingredients elevates and divides the flavours. I can identify ingredients and bring them into focus. Aromatics are less evident, so a search for them sharpens the senses (that’s my theory). The larb kai (poached ground chicken salad) stole the night for me with its vivid mint, intense chilli, shallots and spices and supremely tender meat: fresh, feisty, fabulous. I don’t think I’d pass up desserts at BangPop either. An emerald puddle of tapioca, coloured by pandan leaves and topped with mango sorbet soothes overstimulated taste buds. And McManamey’s steamed coconut pudding served with excellent lychee sorbet will long remind me to return in summer. \ ltolra@theweeklyreview.com.au to rEad morE rEvIEWs

t’s impossible to come away from time spent with Tim McCallum and not see the world through different eyes. That’s because of the man’s relentless positivity in the face of a struggle that would break lesser people. We’ve met at a city café in Melbourne so I can hear his extraordinary story: how the kid from Geelong with dreams of being on the world’s stages as a singer and actor broke his neck at the beach one day and became a quadriplegic at 18, and then went on to pursue his love of performing and pretty much anything else he wanted to do, including skiing. More of that later. McCallum, 33, grew up in Geelong and attended Belmont High, which he says boasted more than its fair share of track athletes, swimmers and footballers. It suited McCallum. “I loved sport,” he says. “I loved athletics, I loved tennis, basketball.” He was in the local basketball team representing Victoria. “Athletics took over towards the end of high school,” he says. “I was a sprinter. All of a sudden the speed kicked in. I just had the ability to run really fast.” He was offered a running scholarship in Canada. McCallum spent a lot of time on the family dairy farm in Glenormiston. “I grew up on the farm as a second home,” he says. “My parents would take me down every school holiday. It’s always had a really special place in my heart. Motorbikes, pulling fences, birthing calves and milking cows … all that stuff.”

dream realised. “It was scary going over because I’d never left home. I was in a new town, but it was where I wanted to be. “On the Saturday before starting the course we went to Scarborough Beach for a swim. My friends were out on their surfboards. I ran into the water a couple of times, ran back out, ran in, and I happened to run a different direction 10 metres to the left … and I dived into an incoming wave and I hit my head on a sand bar. “I instantly broke my neck and was paralysed straight away. I remember feeling the electric shock down the back. I couldn’t move anything. I could see these hands in front of me and I thought, ‘Great, someone’s come to get me’ and then I realised they were my hands and I couldn’t actually move them. “It was at that stage that I blanked out. Just before that I thought, ‘Gee I hope someone saw me go in otherwise this is it’. My four mates I was there with brought me in on a surfboard, laid me on the sand and called paramedics. That was the moment that my life changed significantly forever.” He was 18. McCallum was put into halo traction, a circle bar placed around his head with weights hanging off the back of the bed to hold his neck in a certain position. He was in halo traction for six weeks, unable to move anything. Some shoulder and arm movement returned but there were no major steps to complete recovery.

It was kind of that forced moment where I had the opportunity.” His positive outlook inspired those around him. “With my attitude I drew a lot of people to me who wanted to help out. The local community is so strong.” The family home had been modified, and fund-raising concerts were held. “I never realised how loved I was. I thought I was just another kid. But I was welcomed back with open arms and opportunities to reconnect with the community. Mum and dad played a big role. Rotary clubs would come and help modify the house. I would go and sing for them. “All of a sudden I had all these ready-made gigs. I was singing at Rotary clubs, Carols by Candelight. The gigs came in thick and fast. I think that had a lot to do with the awareness. People said, ‘Whatever you want to do, we’ll help you do it’. “The YMCA basketball club helped so much because I’d played for them for so many years. Keith Roderick, a wonderful family friend, organised a lot of fund-raisers. He was the first on the phone to say, ‘Do you want to come back and coach?’ And I did. I coached for five or six years after that. “Coming home was like nothing had changed except I couldn’t walk. I was still performing shows. My first show after my accident was Les Mis. I played eight roles. They said, ‘You mightn’t be able to walk but we can design this and design that’. And they did. They designed tables for me to sit on in a café scene when I was singing with the other French revolutionists. And I refused to play a dead body on the barricade because I thought that was too easy.” McCallum performed at Melbourne’s Tennis Centre in a state school spectacular directed by David Atkins. He realised how singing had become much more important to him. “People often ask me, ‘Would you rather sing or walk?’ And it’s sing.” One night in 2006 McCallum’s life changed again, this time in the best way, when he met his wife-to-be. “I was performing with the Three Geelong Tenors. Mel happened to be sitting in the front row. It’s going to sound corny and clichéd but she had this smile on her face as though she knew something that I didn’t know and it just captured me. I just wanted to know who she was. Throughout the whole performance she kept looking at me and we kept connecting. “Afterwards I built up the courage and went up and introduced myself – never done that before. I never thought I would have the courage to do that. I’d been a bit unlucky in love after my accident. But there was something about her. I fell in love with her from the day we met.” McCallum and Mel, a child social welfare worker, married in 2008. “Ever since I met Mel I’ve done things that as a quadriplegic I would never do – scuba diving on the Barrier Reef; we spent two years in Canada, I went skiing using adaptive skis, a bucket seat with two skis underneath on springs.” Life is great. This year McCallum was invited to sing in Italy, including a performance in St Marks Square in Venice and the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Bologna with a 60-piece orchestra – an extraordinary experience, he says. He and Mel have moved to Brisbane and have built a house. Kids? “Watch this space,” he says. \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au We Welcome your feedback @

Under the radar \ Myke bartlett reviews the latest film top pick

The new film from Primer director Shane Carruth poses its audience some tough questions. The first, judging by the screening I attended, is: “What the hell was that all about?” Certainly, Upstream Color is an impressionistic, hallucinogenic beast that resists pithy plot summaries. Carruth makes no attempt to guide us through his shapeless tale of two lovers brought together by a shared, traumatic experience. Indeed, I can’t really be sure if that’s what his tale is about. On one level, it seems to be an allegory for the struggle between free will and predeterminism. Our characters’ lives are overseen – through complicated, nonsensical means – by a lonely figure dubbed the Sampler, who seems driven to taste and record the lives of others, although his motivation for doing so is never explained. As the leads begin to unpack the event that destroyed their lives, they strive to free themselves from the Sampler’s influence and, in doing so, reclaim their lives. Maybe. Or maybe Upstream Color is simply an anti-drugs metaphor. Maybe it’s an arty thriller. Certainly, as with the recent Only God Forgives, it’s the sort of movie likely to be embraced by film students and largely ignored by the public. Unlike Only God Forgives, however, Carruth’s film is driven by powerful (if mysterious) emotional undercurrents, rather than stylised cinema geekery. Upstream Color feels meaningful, even if we’re never entirely sure what it all means. It’s perhaps best approached as a profound, involving and somewhat exhilarating experience, from which the audience might draw its own conclusions. \

British performer Shah has an interesting heritage. Raised in the north of Britain by a Pakistani father and Norwegian mother, Shah arrived on the music scene as a jazz singer, although there’s little jazzy about her debut. Despite its punning title, Love Your Dum and Mad is a grand, gothic rock record that, for obvious reasons, has invited comparisons to Nick Cave and PJ Harvey. While there are hints of the latter, Anna Calvi feels a better fit, with Shah’s remarkable voice scaling similar, operatic heights. The album’s instrumentation is clattering and cluttered – at times the tracks feel crafted from found sounds – but Shah’s strident vocals cut through the racket to take centre stage. Sometimes stunning, sometimes heart-wrenching, this is a powerful debut. \

it’s the end of the world as we know it, but humanity lives on in the shape of five individuals stranded in an underground bunker for the next 350 years. as they attempt to build a new utopia and embark on an unusual breeding program, they find themselves embodying the worst tendencies of the First World. Funny and frank, this revived production from melbourne’s hayloft Project proves the cliché: the more things change, the more they stay the same. \

This US comedy from the makers of The Office has had a run on Channel Seven, but Seven made it more or less impossible to follow by shoving it on, somewhat erratically, at hours when nobody was watching. Thankfully, SBS 2 has come to the rescue, stripping the series Monday to Friday in the friendliest of time slots. This is a good thing as, frankly, Parks and Recreation is one of the funniest comedies in production. Leslie Knopes (Amy Poehler) is head of Pawnee County’s Parks and Rec department, but is keeping her eye on the White House. When local, loveable goofball Andy falls into a pit on an abandoned building site, Knopes sees her chance for a career-defining project in transforming the site into a new playground. As she discovers, the political system – even at town council level – is set up to impede, rather than encourage, progress. This is political satire of the warmest, most human variety. After a distinctly wobbly first series, the joke shifts from Knopes being inadequate to her being overqualified. She is a large-scale, Obama-era politician struggling to make a difference in a tiny, creaky, underfunded and deeply conservative town. The real star, however, is Ron Swanson: a deer-shooting, whisky-drinking libertarian plotting to bring down the government from within. His fiercely un-bleeding heart provides a canny comic counterpoint to Knopes’ freewheeling idealism. \

lvis has left the building. Rumours of another imminent sighting in Melbourne can be confirmed. Elvis is soon to croon at Dallas Brooks Centre. The king of rock’n’roll has had a busy schedule in Melbourne this month, with performances at the Athenaeum Theatre and Crown Casino by lookalikes from Detroit and Adelaide. This weekend a Melbourne musician with home-grown sideburns is squeezing into a replica white jumpsuit and presenting quite a different Elvis, circa 1977. Tony Franks says he studied footage from America’s CBS network of one of Elvis’ last concerts to portray him in a theatrical event he says is a first for Australia. Melbourne production company Bluestone has spent four years developing the show, A Tribute to Elvis: Rapid City ’77. Presented as one of Elvis’ last concerts, it “I had comes with props of the times, a venue that to put on is of the era, and singers and a band in flares and wigs. To set the mood for arriving a few kilos patrons, there is a display of memorabilia – I enjoyed and newspaper cuttings in the foyer of East that” Melbourne concert venue the Dallas Brooks Centre. It reverts to Dallas Brooks Hall, its name from the ’70s, in Bluestone’s advertising material. The show warms up with Elvis’ signature Strauss brass and drum fanfare, followed by CC Rider done gospel-style with clapping from his backing singers. Franks’ Elvis wears a white jumpsuit emblazoned with a golden Mexican sundial, a re-creation of the outfit devised by the king’s costume designers Bill Belew and Gene Doucette. There are even actors dressed as US cops controlling the crowd, and backstage crew in Elvis-logo bomber jackets that are true to the CBS footage. “No one has attempted this type of concert before,” says Bluestone associate producer Andrew Barker. “What attracted me to this show is that it is an Elvis concert specifically. So many impersonators over the years have picked the eyes out of his life rather than something encapsulating a period of time. This show adds more interest than just highlights. “We don’t want to denigrate or desecrate Elvis. He put on quite an amazing performance for the condition that he was in. He was quite extraordinary.” The Rapid City, South Dakota, concert that Bluestone brings to life was held at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Centre on June 21, 1977, just weeks before Elvis’ death. The concert’s mix of songs, spanning the king’s career, was sung by a forgetful, mumbling and overweight Elvis who referred to a lyric sheet for the haunting Sinatra song My Way. He apologised for stumbling over the names of his band and backing singers as he introduced them. There were several more unfilmed Elvis concerts to follow on his last tour, but Franks says the king’s performances deteriorated further in these through his ill-health. Elvis died in Memphis on August 16, 1977, from a heart attack at age 42. At audition, Tony Franks, 48, sang one of his favourite Elvis songs, You Gave Me a Mountain, and strummed Are You Lonesome Tonight on guitar. Both songs are in the Rapid City ’77 show. Franks, who has worked as a drummer in many Melbourne rock and Latin bands over the past 20 years, says Bluestone was not looking for an impersonator to cover Elvis songs. Big shoes to fill: “They wanted the right singer, the right tone and Tony Franks the right mannerisms,” he says, and he took an intense recreates one of approach to learning the role of an unfit but still tuneful Elvis’ last great Elvis. “I am a method actor. I had to put on a few kilos – concerts and I quite enjoyed that.” (PETEr A compilation recipe book of Elvis’ favourite CasamEnTo) indulgent foods – Are You Hungry Tonight? – is available from online bookshops but Franks says he preferred to bulk up with meals of steak, bread and lasagne prepared by his wife, Francesca. And lots of it. Franks says his wife has also had to put up with his Elvis-type mumbling at home when his method acting

incorporated Elvis’ personality traits. He also worked on Elvis’ body language, voice projection and hip moves, which were not nearly as vigorous as they once were. “This is a totally different Elvis,” Franks says. “There are 80,000 impersonators in the world – mostly from America – and most are of the years ’71 to ’74, his second peak era when he still looked his best. “He looked great in a jumpsuit then. It’s a safety net era for impersonators because it remembers him at his best.” Franks says he was not tempted to see the two recent Elvis shows in Melbourne. “I didn’t go because I

didn’t want to confuse myself. This is a later era, a different man. “We are going where people haven’t seen this time live. We are doing it exactly as it was. No extra gyrations. All the props are as they were in Rapid City. “We’ve done a lot of research.” \ lhall@theweeklyreview.com.au » A Tribute to Elvis in Concert: Rapid City ’77, August 23-31, Dallas Brooks Centre. juices and smoothies taking over your breakfast table. Leafy green vegetables, from the ubiquitous kale, rocket and spinach to the less-trendy iceberg, are full of nourishment. Leafy greens contain the vitamin B, iron and folate needed to transport energy around the body and provide nervous system support. They also contribute to repair, recovery and regeneration of cells thanks to the magnesium content, and they also contain vitamin K, an essential for blood-clotting. Try blending one ripe frozen banana with two large handfuls of cos lettuce, a few sprigs of fresh mint, a tablespoon of cacao powder and water in the blender. For a smoother, richer texture, add half a small avocado. Trust me – it works. This smoothie consumed post-workout will give you a burst of goodness and vitality that processed protein shakes will never deliver. If a cos lettuce smoothie does not float your boat, there are alternatives. The important thing is adding more green vegetables to your life. Toss steamed kale with macadamia nut oil and fetta cheese, select spinach as a side with your eggs instead of hash browns, or add bok choy to your barbecue dinner.

Would you like a tisane with that? \

Tisanes and herbal teas filled with rose petals and pretty chamomile flowers may not appear as masculine as a short macchiato. Herbal teas can contribute to your daily fluid intake and yes, water consumption is crucial even in colder weather. let’s cheer for oatmeal \

Oats, whether consumed as porridge, Bircher muesli or in a banana-oat smoothie, provide sustained energy, promote bowel health, reduce cholesterol absorption and can enhance athletic performance. f ever you were going to have a local, you’d want it to be like the Mornington Peninsula. What a perfect locale for a local, one that lends itself to alliteration: peninsula, pinot, peaceful, perfect produce, pleasing pinot, pleasant people, and plentiful pinot. You get the drift. As a getaway, it doesn’t get a lot better: not too far from the big smoke, but far enough to put you at ease while you embrace all of the above. Tasting many of the area’s wines was, in fact, a taste of things to come: 26 of the region’s wineries will show off their new releases with some aged pearlers at next month’s Mornington Peninsula Melbourne Roadshow. There are two things to love about this 2013 edition of the Carrera, featuring the in-house 1887 calibre. One, the horizontal subdials. Two, the “bullhead”-style case with angled dial. It places the crown and chronograph pushers at the top of the case, giving it the appearance of the two-part stopwatches Jack Heuer supplied to pro-racing circuits. “I’m not a watch man, I’m a product man,” Jack told The Weekly Review at the Carrera’s 50th birthday party in Geneva. “But as a product, this watch is a classic.” (SUPPLIED)

O

nce, “What are you wearing?” was the standard query. But with the popularity of mechanical watches, there’s a second question: “Nice watch, is it an in-house movement?” This refers to whether the movement is made by the maison, or a generic one. Here are three in-house movements to make that awkward moment go away. “Why yes, yes it is … ” \ amcutchen@theweeklyreviewcom.au

the top five things young people should know to avoid bad credit

ccording to a recent Roy Morgan poll, one in three people aged 16-25 carries more than $2500 forward in credit card debt each month, despite those aged 21 to 25 having an average weekly income of only $791. Statistics released by credit reporting agency Veda Advantage in March showed Gen Y accounted for 60 per cent of credit defaults – topping the list in every category from telco defaults through to loan defaults. MyCRA Credit Rating Repair CEO Graham Doessel says one of the reasons for this is a lack of education. “Many young people amble through their early years with credit, making mistake after mistake that can cost them dearly down the track,” he says. “Credit rights and obligations should be taught in schools.” Doessel says many young people have financial habits that get them into trouble. “Before they know it, they’re 20 years old and facing bankruptcy or court action and years of being locked out of the finance market coming into the crucial years when they need it most,” he says. Doessel says many young people are unaware of their basic rights in disputing bills or credit reporting. “Young people can assume they should accept what they’re told without question – but in matters of credit reporting, young people need to be educated to be able to effectively advocate for themselves,” he says. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

overseas for a long stay. Typically an account gets sent to your previous address and, if unpaid, is listed on your credit file. If you move around often, consider a post office box for your mail or use a parent’s address. Otherwise, when you move, give your credit providers your new address. If going overseas, have someone check your mail regularly.

(ISTOCKPHOTO \ THINKSTOCK)

1. Pay all of your credit on tiMe

Unpaid accounts for as little as $100 can lead to you being defaulted and banned from mainstream credit for five years. Credit cards and loans paid more than five days late may mean a late payment notation is added to your file. Any credit account can get you slapped with a default if it is unpaid – mobile phone accounts, electricity accounts, credit cards and personal loans. Make it a habit to pay every account on time, every time.

4. check your credit stateMents and order a credit rePort

You might think someone would inform you if something was listed incorrectly on your credit file. But this is seldom the case. It is your responsibility to make sure your accounts are correct by checking statements. In addition, you should also regularly obtain a copy of your credit file. Your credit report is free once every year from Australia’s credit reporting agencies – order it annually.

2. let your credit Provider know if you can’t Pay

Communication is key when it comes to staying out of trouble. If you run into financial difficulty, contact your credit provider to work out alternative arrangements. Asking for a financial hardship variation may save your credit file, even if you are struggling to make payments.

5. you have a riGht to correct Mistakes

Mistakes can happen on credit reports. Likewise, bad credit can be listed on credit files unknowingly. However, credit providers have a legal obligation to remove an incorrect listing. Any listing you feel is inaccurate or unfair should be tested for its validity. \

Books

\ CORRIE PERKIN MANS UP WITH SEVEN BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FATHER’S DAY

F

ather’s Day looms and our little bookshop is manning up. The beautiful hot pink and pastel-toned book covers that dominated our shelves during the Mother’s Day sales have been replaced by lots of non-fiction titles – usually with loud, red and black covers – featuring stories about bikie gangs, former AFL greats, business gurus, beer, 1970s rock bands, the Australian Labor Party (and how it went bung), best wines, and better fishing spots. There are some real gems among this year’s batch. The federal election and some new thinking about the ALP’s future have prompted a host of politics titles. Business books have moved on from the Wall Street collapse of 2007-08 and are focused on future strategies and new growth markets. There are lots of sport, history and autobiography offerings, while November’s 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s assassination and next year’s centenary of the start of World War I are also creating interest. There are many reasons books make great gifts but, when contemplating what to buy your dad or special bloke this Father’s Day, consider the following: dads too often get slotted into the too-hard-to-buy-for category. Unlike a pair of socks or a packet of golf tees, a book shows that you have spent time considering your choice, and dads appreciate this. They also love to hear why you chose the title you did. Immediately, a fabulous book dialogue begins. And books are affordable. Just ask your local bookseller for advice and a tour of the shop’s range, and you’ll find some great titles for under $15. Remember, also, that many parents are under 55 and have been greatly influenced by popular culture – TV, film,

contemporary art, advertising, the web, social media, rock music and the like. These topics are catalysts for some terrific books. Enter the 100 Best Albums of All Time by Toby Creswell and Craig Mathieson ($49.95, Hardie Grant), our pick of the 2013 Father’s Day crop. Well researched and compiled by two of Australia’s most respected music writers, this book also features photographs and album cover images, and contains a few list surprises that will certainly provoke debate. A beautiful hardcover, we expect 100 Best Albums to be one of our bestsellers between now and Christmas. Barbecue books generally leave us cold; their blokey formats and insipid recipes too often lack imagination. Then we discovered Bon Appetit magazine’s new The Grilling Book ($50, Andrews McMeel Publishing). This is a truly beautiful barbecue book and includes cooking tips and more than 350 recipes. As a rule, we avoid US cookery books. Their recipes often don’t translate well locally, while their food stylists and photographers lack the creativity of their highly talented Australian counterparts. But The Grilling Book defies the norm. In the words of British-born, New York-based chef April Bloomfield, “If you’ve never grilled before, or have an expert on hand, this book is a must’’. Killing Fairfax: Packer, Murdoch & The Ultimate Revenge by Pamela Williams ($39.99, HarperCollins) and Colleen Ryan’s Fairfax: The Rise And Fall ($32.95 MUP) recently arrived in bookshops. Both books examine the Sydney-based Fairfax media empire

and the predators, bad managers and destructive forces that have affected its fortunes. Media junkies will appreciate these two riveting accounts, while anyone interested in business generally will find that the books offer much food for thought. The 2013 calendar’s aligning of the Ashes series, the US golf tour, the recent Tour de France, footy, rugby and – just around the corner – the spring racing carnival, has provided publishers with many book opportunities. One to watch is Amen: How Adam Scott Won the US Masters and Broke the Curse of Augusta National ($27.99, Allen and Unwin). Sydney sports writers Will Swanton and Brent Read teamed up to produce a lively narrative of Adam Scott’s April US Masters campaign. The book includes interviews with Scott, his father Phil, and Australian golfing greats Greg Norman, Peter Thomson, Ian Baker-Finch and Jack Newton as they reflect on the significance of the Atlanta victory. For the man who loves architecture, we urge you to consider Thames and Hudson’s pictorial tribute to one of Australia’s finest architects.

Robin Boyd’s Living In Australia ($59.95, Thames and Hudson) was first published in 1970 and has been reproduced with original photographs by the late Mark Strizic, a friend of Boyd, as well as additional images by John Gollings. Boyd’s design philosophy – beautifully articulated and still relevant more than four decades later – is accompanied by contemporary perspectives of the master’s contribution by architects Kerstin Thompson and Rachel Neeson. And finally, our feel-good/self-improvement/change your life book of the year. The Good Life: What Makes a Life Worth Living? by Hugh Mackay ($29.99, Pan Macmillan) may cause dad to smile and wonder whether you are trying to make a point. Perhaps you are. Perhaps we should all strive to identify behaviours that can lead to a happier life. Since the 1980s, social researcher Mackay has delved into the lives of Australians, probing and observing and listening. “The Good Life draws heavily on those stories,’’ he says in his introduction. His conclusions are fascinating and uplifting – exactly what dad deserves on Father’s Day. \ cperkin@theweeklyreview.com.au

any new vehicles are trumpeted as game-changers, but few are. When Britain’s original Range Rover arrived on the scene in 1970, it truly shook the status quo, introducing an unprecedented blend of luxury, road manners and supreme off-road capability. I will never forget my introduction to this SUV icon, from the passenger seat of a Rangie driven by a Land Rover staffer who intentionally drove head-on over a high kerb. Fearing the front suspension would be ripped out by the roots, I braced for a huge bang, only to be amazed by a muted thump as the big beast took the obstacle without a hair out of place. It was a revelation. Four decades on, the new fourth-generation Range Rover from this British brand, now Indian-owned, still sets the pace as one of the few luxury four-wheel-drives capable of supple mountain-goat feats while looking the part in the Flemington car park at the spring carnival. The new Range Rover gets an evolutionary styling update, but the biggest change is under the skin, with all-aluminium construction. This helps rid the vehicle of a staggering 420 kilograms of unwanted fat, although it still weighs north of two tonnes. The big question is whether this form of car-like construction – called a monocoque – can deliver the same hard-core performance, on road and off. The Range Rover has lost none of its on-bitumen performance, riding and cornering with a belligerence that belies its bulk and tall stance, thanks to a large extent to its active air suspension that works overtime to keep it floating on an even keel. Whopping 21-inch wheels help, too. The weight savings deliver improvements in acceleration and fuel economy, with the test car – a high-end supercharged V8 Vogue SE – gliding from zero to 100km/h in a sporty 5.4 seconds. Thirst has been chopped 9 per cent but, at 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres, the force-fed 5.0-litre petrol Range Rover’s fuel economy is not for the environmental warrior. In town, the glug-glugging of fuel soars to more than 20L/100km, hence most buyers will opt for diesel variants – the 3.0-litre TDV6 (7.5L/100km) or stump-ripping 4.4-litre SDV8 (8.7L/100km).

Sadly, an old-style rainy week in Melbourne prevented us from stretching the Range Rover’s talents in the bush. We suspect the vehicle could handle it, but ploughing up sodden bush tracks is environmental vandalism. We are assured that the latest model has lost none of its long-legged climbing ability using its low-range gearing, massive wheel travel, deep well of torque and, on the test car, active rear differential. It can even wade through 900mm of water. As before, the Range Rover’s suspension can be raised or lowered with the twist of a dial to meet conditions. Of course, most Range Rovers spend their days wading through commuter traffic, with the driver seated high above the riff-raff, cosseted behind laminated acoustic glass range rover vogue se What is it? Four-wheel-drive luxury SUV What’s in it? Supercharged 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine. Power: 375kW. 0-100km/h: 5.4 sec is it thirsty? 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres – 2.5 stars price

in sumptuous captain’s chairs that have 18-way electrical adjustment. And now we are getting to the crux of why well-heeled buyers shell out such a big wad of cash. This is extremely comfortable. The decor is a mix of old English drawing room and up-to-the-minute gizmos. For example, the heated steering wheel was cloaked in optional ($980) traditional wood and leather. The new eight-speed automatic transmission, a German-made ZF unit shared with sister company Jaguar and other car-makers such as BMW, offers two more gears than the previous generation and is controlled by a round selector knob that pops out of the console. A big sat-nav screen dominates a dash swathed in leather. Above it, the windscreen has fine wires embedded in it – the anti-icing and de-fogging system for snow country. In the limo-style back seat, passengers who tire of watching the countryside rushing past can switch to the touch-control TV screens, complete with headphones, embedded in each of the front headrests. Behind the split-fold seats, a capacious luggage compartment swallows a large lump of cargo, making maximum use of the extra stretch in the car’s overall length. The two-piece rear hatch has an upper door that rises and lowers majestically at the push of a button, and a lower tailgate that swings down to transform into a convenient carpeted seat at the polo or picnic table at the cup. Apart from three engine choices, the new Range Rover comes in four equipment levels – HSE, Vogue, Vogue SE and Autobiography – with prices starting at $168,900 (plus on-road costs) for the V6 diesel HSE and rising to $240,100 for the supercharged V8 petrol Autobiography. Oddly, only the Autobiography gets auto-braking adaptive cruise control as standard, with buyers of other levels having to fork out $3240 for the privilege. But all Range Rover owners can bask in the glow of the convenient “puddle lights” that don’t merely light the way into the cabin at night, but also spell out “Range Rover” on the ground. Just in case you forget what you paid for. \ rhammerton@theweeklyreview.com.au

struggle with the tempo at which our lives are orchestrated; it’s more a jive than a jitterbug. Not only is the speed at which we’re expected to perform unnerving but, syncopated with multitasking and the fact that computers give us the opportunity to make very fast, very accurate mistakes, we’re sliding off the dance floor, out the door and crashing through the verandah. At 176 beats per minute, the speed at which jive is danced in competition, we can’t possibly absorb very much. I’m stopping the dance metaphors, it’s making me breathless. We’re experiencing the world through our devices – at a glance. Recently a friend told me that when she can’t fall asleep, she visualises her problems as folders on her computer’s desktop, then deletes them one by one. This morning while transferring rubbish from the bin in my kitchen to the big bin outside, I was thinking – there are 25 items in the trash, are you sure you want to remove them permanently? What will become of our relationship with the real world? The one that doesn’t have an icon, an app or an interface. We need to stop clicking and reclaim our curiosity with our senses. Buildings are defined by their design, structure and usage. And, if it’s an older building, by its history. It’s precisely this history, embodied in a building’s wear and tear, stains and smells, that delivers a sensory experience. Melbourne’s CBD has dozens of heritage buildings that have held onto their identity and are still occupied by the sort of businesses they were originally designed for. If you want to avoid being totally robbed of

your curiosity, take a ride in their kooky lifts or walk up their spartan stairs; therein lies sensory magic. The Nicholas Building has been a creative hub forever. Exploring this building is like going through a constantly moving turnstile, which presents alternately the past and the present. Enter via the Cathedral Arcade with its vaulted leadlight ceiling, dome and fanlights – reportedly the only remaining example of a leadlight-roofed and fan-lighted arcade in Melbourne – read the tenant directory, and you’ll find nine floors of studios, artists and artisans. Designed by architect Harry Norris and built by Nicholas Buildings Pty Ltd in 1925-26, the basement, ground and first floors were created as retail spaces, with Cathedral Arcade providing a link between Swanston Street and Flinders Lane. The shopfronts, particularly at first-floor level, highlight the very best of 1920s shop and office decoration; there are letter chutes and directory boards made by Brooks Robinson shopfitters on every floor. Experience the romance of manually operated lifts. The top six floors are no-nonsense. Smallish corridors, cream-tiled walls, lino floors and varnished timber joinery on doors and windows all point to a stylish and utilitarian environment. Other than an addition to the ground floor, there have been very few major structural alterations to the internal fabric of the building since 1939. If you want to feel, smell and touch the past while simultaneously peeking into the future, waltz into this Melbourne gem. \ boomboom@rachelberger.com

… and speaking of landmark structures …

(LExI COTTEE)

lyric House Often, Melburnians speak passionately about the Paris end of Collins Street, forgetting about the financial end towards Elizabeth and Queen streets. Designed by A & K Henderson for Wertheim, Melbourne’s premier piano retailer, and built in 1930, Lyric House was described as “an architectural representation of the spirit of music’’. The tall, thin proportions are typical of interwar buildings, perhaps to maximise space. But here the lean shape and string-like narrow fenestration is reminiscent of the hammers and strings of a piano. Look above the entry arch and you’ll see the figures depicted playing the flute, lute and cymbals. Ta-dah! \

(LExI COTTEE)

robur Tea building The height and freestanding character of this six-storey Victorian warehouse makes it a South Melbourne landmark. The building, designed by architects Nahum Barnet and John Grainger (also the engineer) and built in 1888 by James Moore, is one of the few to have survived redevelopment. It was built on swampy land that made substantial building difficult and residential development unattractive. It once was one of the tallest buildings outside the CBD. Although named Robur Tea Building after a famous occupant, it was built as a warehouse for stationers Fergus and Mitchell. \

(NEIL NEWITT)

(LExI COTTEE)

cromarty building If you regularly visit Smith Street in Collingwood, you probably love beards and harbour contempt for any music that isn’t jazz; it’s a cool destination. It’s also one of Melbourne’s oldest shopping streets. This building, formerly Cromarty’s Store and built in 1888-89, has operated as a wood shop, grocer and tea merchant. Currently food is being served under the name Agent 284 – a restaurant and bar offering home-style modern Australian meals with a side order of Collingwood history. I’d bet James Cromarty and Alfred Mainman, the grocers who operated the original wooden shop, would be chuffed to know that patrons are still being fed on the premises. \
