Shanahan wonders, was it the Syrian regime making a vicious point about the irrelevance of UN inspectors? Was it a rogue local area commander? Was it a foul provocation of the opposition itself against its own people – or some frayed part of that complex, compromised grouping? When put in those terms, it makes the challenges of historic atrocities – the Nazi persecution or the Rwandan genocide or Bosnia – seem almost simple in their clear delineation: one powerful group against the persecuted. It remains a defeating and desperate truth that the complexity and sophistication of current-day geopolitical understanding is still no match for the abysmal and primitive depths of some human cruelty. \

pening a new suburban restaurant at a time when some businesses are closing and the way we eat out is changing may seem crazy. But when that new suburban restaurant is owned and operated by a skilled and experienced chef, it seems like a logical piece in an inner-west jigsaw has just been placed. It makes sense. Union Food & Wine is by chef Stuart McVeigh, who was most recently head chef at No. 35 in the city’s Sofitel. He has trained in London, notably at the three-star Michelin restaurant Pied à Terre with chef Shane Osborn, and has brought a very smart eatery to Union Road, Ascot Vale. McVeigh has lived in Ascot Vale for 11 years and wanted to create a good neighbourhood bistro – a place to go on nights you may not feel like cooking, but yearn for some good food and well-crafted flavours. That’s exactly what he’s created in Union Food & Wine. Four entrées, mains and desserts is how McVeigh has structured his menu in a room that still feels new (it opened on August 1). The fresh-paint scent lingers slightly and the walls are quite bare; he’s planning to add artwork as the months progress. With timber floors and high ceilings, it makes for a loud room, but not uncomfortably so. Flexibility is important in dining out nowadays, and McVeigh offers it with a snack board that includes a pork terrine to share or barbecued octopus, chargrilled and served in a small pot with a thick garlicky skordalia. Perhaps it’s McVeigh’s nod to the growing popularity of Greek food, or just a nice bite to enjoy with an aperitif. In either context it works. The waiters are friendly, talking through the dishes and answering questions; while they may not always know the answers, they find them out quickly. We start with an entrée of beetroot-cured king salmon with blood orange, avocado and mustard vinaigrette. It’s an elegant dish. Carefully placed thick slices of the fish are served next to spoonfuls of smooth avocado purée and the bitey vinaigrette gives it some punch on the palate. A caramelised onion tart is a study in balance. A crisp disc of well-cooked puff pastry is dolloped with jammy onion and topped off with a round of good rich goat’s cheese from Yarra Valley Dairy. It’s all scattered with rocket leaves and finished with a dousing of vincotto. The earthy goat’s cheese is set against the rich onion and the syrupy vincotto, which plays its own role as a sweet foil to the savoury characters. Of the four mains there is one vegetarian dish – baked gnocchi with silverbeet, taleggio and winter truffle – but we opt for two of the three omnivorous choices. The braised duck with orange, cracked wheat and spices – fennel, coriander seed and black pepper – arrives on an earthenware dish. The meat on the leg is cooked to a tenderness that melds with the Middle-Eastern flavours accompanying it. The grainy addition of cracked wheat fits the profile of flavours, and

a luscious date purée, thick like a paste, is intense in its fruity caramel edge. It’s good but the best, we discover, is yet to come. McVeigh has a great knack of rounding out a dish; of taking a main component, allowing it to stand out but making each ingredient so important you can’t imagine it not being there. He’s economical and thoughtful in his compositions and this is realised in his wild barramundi with mushroom purée, brioche and black cabbage. Barramundi is in season now – each year it runs from March to October – and this fine specimen has come in from the Northern Territory. McVeigh cooks it just right. It arrives at the table, a thick fillet with a crunchy brioche crust and translucent flesh. Fish can be hard to get right in restaurants because the flesh continues to cook once off the heat, but it’s clear McVeigh knows how to manage this. He

accompanies the succulent flesh with a mushroom purée, a well-pitched baritone to the barramundi’s tenor. It strikes a subtley delicious chord that is given broader reach with savoury black cabbage. From the side dishes, we choose a salad of witlof and fennel with watercress, providing a fresh, crisp bite. The drinks list is succinct but broad in its choices. Wines from New Zealand, Australia and Europe grace the selection together with smart craft beers. There are a handful by the glass, which is how we choose to order. A glass of 2010 Denis Pommier Petit Chablis is a great match with our entrées and we swiftly move to a glass of Winbirra Pinot Noir 2010 from the Mornington Peninsula to finish off the onion tart and try with the mains. A glass of 2008 The Met Shiraz is a surprisingly good match with the fish. Seasonal choices continue into dessert and we contemplate warm prune and walnut frangipane with poached quince, and honey and walnut ice-cream, but a chocolate pave comes up trumps. McVeigh uses Valrhona chocolate, infuses it with vanilla and combines it with cream to produce a milky chocolate finish, then serves it with burnt-orange syrup and candied cumquats. Its creamy, citrus characters are not too sweet, giving the meal a finish that is as balanced as the whole experience. McVeigh opens for breakfast and lunch on most days as well as dinner. While opening a restaurant in the current climate may be mad, when you have the skill of a chef like McVeigh and choose to serve good food at great prices, well, it seems quiet sane. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au to REad moRE REviEWs

Started by Thomas Kiltorp, who was behind Red Hummingbird and the Emerald Peacock, it has strong Scandinavian influences with a cocktail list that is impressive. We can’t go past restaurants that also do justice to cocktails. Some to consider when you’re next grabbing a bite to eat include Circa in St Kilda, Coda on Flinders Lane and Brooks Bar on Collins Street near Hotel Sofitel. You won’t be disappointed with the bar staff’s expertise in making amazing tipples – seasonally charged, hell-bent on originality and some that don’t venture far beyond the original version. Brooks Bar, driven by the impressive cocktail expertise of Shae Silvestro, is a fine example of cocktail mastery, precision and inventiveness, while venues such as Captain Melville near Queen Victoria Market bring a Gold Rush theme to happy hour, or any hour for that matter. \ Peter Wilmoth meets Blanche d’alPuget

I

t’s a warm and sunny afternoon in Sydney and, standing on Blanche d’Alpuget’s and Bob Hawke’s balcony overlooking Middle Harbour, life looks good. Near the water, there’s even a jetty and a boat. “We’ve used it exactly once,” d’Alpuget says of the boat. Later, as we speak, Hawke strolls by and says hello. “He smokes cigars but he’s not allowed to do it inside the house,” d’Alpuget says. “We’ve got a very nice bigger balcony downstairs with a lot of sun. That’s where the cigar smoking happens.” D’Alpuget shows me around. There are several sculptures by her son Louis, 40, and an amazing fish tank, which is actually more an aquarium. When I arrive a woman is finishing off putting some massive flowers into a vase, supervised by d’Alpuget. Over the way is Hawke’s study. The house is luxurious with a heart-stopping view and it’s worth gazillions but it’s somehow warm and intimate. Maybe that says something about the very down-to-earth owners. It’s an insight into the world of the Hawke/d’Alpuget household. And it’s only slightly unnerving asking d’Alpuget about her long relationship with the former PM – and the occasional turmoil it’s caused her publicly – when the man himself is walking past about to torch a stogie. But this scene I’m witnessing can only suggest that this couple are so much in love that really not much else matters, so why would they care what people think? The reason for d’Alpuget’s return to the public eye is the publication this week of The Young Lion, the first in

Writing, she says, has been a blessing. “I stopped writing completely for 15 years when I married Bob. It was because I was having too much fun.” Can’t you have fun and write at the same time? “Not really. I can’t. When I’m writing that’s all I do. I don’t go out during school nights. “We were travelling every six weeks for around 10 days at a time. I had this huge house to refurnish. And I really wanted to give a great deal of time and energy and attention to my relationship with Bob. We’d waited long enough for each other … I really wanted to give my energy to the relationship.” What prompted her back to the computer? “I owe a great debt of gratitude to Louise Adler [head of Melbourne University Publishing], who rang out of the blue and asked me if I would do a 10,000-word essay and I thought, ‘That’s something I could manage’. “I’d done an enormous amount of travelling with Bob. The business [the consultancy RJL Hawke and Associates, of which she is a director] was ticking along well. I’d finished – well, no woman has ever finished redecorating – but I’d finished that phase of redecorating the house and I thought, ‘Yes, I’ll give it a go’.” The resulting, book, On Longing, was published in 2008. How did it feel to come back? “It was terror at first – will I be able to do this? But then once I started it was sheer bliss.”

In respect of Blanche a series of novels set in the 12th century, marking her return to fiction after 20 years. D’Alpuget developed a strong interest in the 12th century in her 20s. “It was a renaissance because of the crusades,” she says. “The crusaders brought all of this learning from ancient Greece and Rome that had been lost during the Dark Ages and brought back to northern Europe, particularly to France. So there was a great flowering of intellect and philosophy and knowledge of medicine and architecture. It was a burgeoning of human imagination.” I ask d’Alpuget about this return to writing. Does a writer have to be a great self-starter? “No, because the motivation is intense. I just can’t wait to get to work in the morning.” Do writers need to be a little bit neurotic? “I’m a very un-neurotic person, I’m afraid to tell you. Hemingway said you write out your sicknesses in books. Then he shot himself, so he didn’t quite write them all out. In my case, when I was younger I was writing out a lot of things that otherwise people would have dealt with through therapy, for example. I’m talking about aspects of my psyche, things that have upset me, experiences. In that regard it was a very personal self-therapy.” 14 The weekly review \ AUGUST 28, 2013

Bob and Blanche. B1 and B2. Such a talked-about couple. In their towelling bathrobes in The Australian Women’s Weekly. The relationship has been a source of such joy and sometimes turmoil and caused a lot of angst. How did she deal with it? “I ignored it, mostly.” Of course, writing three books about her lover and then husband – the first a biography when Hawke was still married to Hazel Hawke, the second, the essay, and 2010’s Hawke: The Prime Minister – you are always going to be vulnerable to a charge of lack of objectivity. “My central challenge was to gather information that otherwise would have been lost in writing about this prime minister,” she says. “The book [Hawke: The Prime Minister] wasn’t terribly well received and wasn’t greatly appreciated but I think it will be in the future. “I think people are still shirty with me and they’re thinking, ‘Oh how can you possibly write objectively about your husband?’ But the fact was I was gathering information from public servants who were never going to write books, never going to record what happened and that was information that would have been completely lost to Australian history.” The couple’s mutual adoration doesn’t protect her

from snide comments from the media about Bob and Blanche being so open about their love. She shrugs. “My son, who lives with us, had to put up with us kissing each other all through dinner.” She has always been a lightning rod for criticism. “I truly believe in that wonderful old saying ‘love conquers all’. That’s a truth for me. All the criticism and so forth has kind of been water off a duck’s back because of the love Bob and I feel for each other. It’s their own sadnesses and anxieties and fears that they’re talking about. It’s got really nothing much to do with me.”

D

id it ever cause her pain that people felt affection for Hazel Hawke and that there was resistance to the public way she and Bob initiated their relationship? “It was unpleasant. But I had no sense of, ‘This is wrong’, because I knew that the highest value was love. And there was a huge love between me and Bob. And that overrode all other considerations. It was at the top and everything else was underneath that. And people will think what they think.” Part of the reason for accepting Adler’s invitation to write On Longing was to correct some inaccurate

Wikipedia references. “It was so inaccurate … I thought, ‘It is time to tell this story’.” There were suggestions too that d’Alpuget had painted an inaccurate portrait of Hazel in some of her works on Hawke. Said Hawke’s daughter Sue Pieters-Hawke: “My mother is entitled, on the basis of the life she has lived and the way she has lived it, to be recognised as a person of deep conviction and principled choices.” “My initial book on Bob was a very, very nice portrayal of Hazel,” says d’Alpuget. “Everybody recognised that. In the second book, again it was a very attractive portrait of Hazel. What Sue is complaining about was the … I’m not sure actually. She gets (on) hobby horses.” In 2011 d’Alpuget and Pieters-Hawke were involved in an incident at Brisbane Airport in which Pieters-Hawke claims d’Alpuget slapped her in the airport lounge. “Sue and I are very good friends,” d’Alpuget says now. “We had lunch together on Sunday. Her son was staying here last week. She doesn’t want to comment on it and I don’t want to comment on it, and I’m not going to.” I asked d’Alpuget about Paul Keating’s open letter on the 2010 publication of Hawke: The Prime Minister. She laughs. “It was just Paul,” she says.

Picture \ louise cooPer The thrust of Keating’s letter was that Hawke’s depression extended well beyond 1984. D’Alpuget subsequently said that was not true and that Hawke had it contained within six months or so. “It suited Paul to see things like that.” How does she view Hawke’s and Keating’s relationship? “It was a very effective team of rivals. And in a way they weren’t really friends then, they were comrades in a cause but they were not simpatico ever, except for their shared purpose that they both worked towards, and tried to help each other on that. Most of the time.” D’Alpuget had a sometimes troubled youth. She left home aged 17 after a fight with her father about her affair with a Polish writer. Her mother left the house the next day. “I stayed in the YWCA in Sydney,” she says. Her father was a firm man. “More than firm. Volatile. Given to violence.” Did he hit her? “Yes. Not often. He was very strong. He was a New South Wales welterweight champion boxer. And he had a genuine six-pack.” She was married at 21 and, after living in Malaysia for

a bit, she brought her son Louis back to Australia when he was 10 months old. Neither her mercurial father, nor having been molested at the age of 12 by a family friend – long since deceased – put her off men. “I’ve gotta say I’ve always liked men. From the age of 16 to 30 I was a galley slave in the warships of Aphrodite, I think.” Has it been a lucky life? “Very. I have been in two serious car accidents, one small plane crash, I’ve had malaria. There have been a few down moments.” The plane crash happened in 1994 when she was near the Great Barrier Reef doing a piece for The New York Times travel section. “We were in a seaplane. He had to ditch the plane into the sea and it was really quite scary. “A yachtsman with a motorised dinghy saw it happen and jumped in his dinghy and came over. We managed to heave ourselves out of the water covered in bruises and Avgas. The plane sank.” She plans to keep working on this historical series. “For me this is my life’s work that I’m now engaged in. In this age of iPod and Spotify playlists, the compilation CD seems something of an anachronism. When we’re curating our own mixes, having to pay for somebody else’s selection seems a strange chore. These new collections from Australia’s Festival Records understand this. Rather than rounding up old favourites, they strive to take the listener far from the beaten track. The best, by a long mile, of the three released this month is Cosmic Country, which revisits the ’60s and ’70s to document the birth of Americana. It’s a warm, enjoyable collection of lesser-known folky gems featuring the likes of Gram Parsons, The Byrds, Grateful Dead, Gene Clark and The Flying Burrito Brothers. Seamlessly sequenced, this is good company for a Sunday afternoon. Companion comp Silver Roads offers an Australian take on country rock. There are a few more obvious choices (Khe Sanh has a hard time fitting in), but the album’s 46 tracks provide a comprehensive introduction to a much-overlooked chapter in our musical heritage. Last of the three, Heavy Soul, returns to the crossroads where soul met rock, resulting in the patter and shuffle of funky feet. It’s a stranger, heavier mix than the other two, leaning towards the psychedelic. Like its comrades, it should make an ideal Father’s Day pressie for the dad looking to (re)discover some new (old) musical ground. \

After Lewis succumbs to a night of debauchery, he finds himself in the grip of a drunken bet that will forever change the way he looks at his friend. Based on the 2009 comedy film Humpday, Straight promises a wicked, thoroughly entertaining look at the murky territory between physical and emotional intimacy. \

dvd Callan: The Colour Years \ $69.95 (Roadshow) » www.roadshow.com.au This classic ’70s British series transforms the spy thriller into a kitchen-sink drama. Taking its cue from John Le Carré and The Ipcress File, Callan presents an altogether grimmer and more realistic take on espionage than the likes of James Bond or Danger Man. David Callan (Edward Woodward) is the most reluctant of assassins, disgusted by his work for government agency The Section but in too deep to make a clean exit. Woodward brings an odd mix of innocence, cynicism and fury to the role. We catch glimpses of the decent man he must once have been, even if he has been reduced to more-or-less impotent rage against his superiors. These 22 episodes see Callan engaged in blackmail, smear-campaigns and murder, and follow him from despising The Section to becoming its chief after a brief stay in a Russian gulag. While the show might lack the glitz and glamour we’ve come to expect from TV drama, the scripts and performances are top notch throughout. It’s a shame a little more love hasn’t been given to the transfer, however, as the picture – fuzzy and troubled by tape glitches – falls far short of the standard established by other cult classic releases such as The Prisoner and Doctor Who. Thankfully, Callan transcends its wobbly presentation and dated production values to remain dark, clever and addictive telly. \

M

oving from a three-bedroom apartment on the Geelong waterfront to a custom-built home surrounded by grasslands a stone’s throw from the rumbling surf of Barwon Heads was an opportunity relished by Hedley Griffiths and partner Fi Mercer. Having held a deep-seated hankering to live in a small, friendly village by the sea, the busy couple’s natural choice was Barwon Heads. Once the block of land was secured, Johnny Greig, of Greig Design and Construction, was commissioned to oversee the rather significant build. Working closely with James Goodlet, of Altereco Design, the team took two years to arrive at the final design, with the couple changing their minds several times during the process. The design that won the couple’s seal of approval fulfils the brief, which calls for flexible spaces for three generations to live when children, partners, grandchildren and pets come to visit. continues » P26

Mercer and Griffiths cite their travels through Europe, and in particular the Perigord region in the south of France, for their inspiration in the use of natural stonework that adorns multiple fireplaces inside and out. The cement benchtops and flooring, along with the concrete bath and basins, take their inspiration from the villas of Florence in Italy. Capturing the northerly aspect of the block – and views of the nearby river – was also a priority for the couple. “Going to sleep and waking up to the muted rumble of the surf is one of the best things about living here,” says Mercer. Cement hearths wide enough to sit on in the outdoor entertainment areas ensure that the outdoor fireplace is an inviting meeting point even in the depths of winter. “We wanted a home that our children, now all grown up, would feel relaxed to come home to with

their partners, children and pets,” says Mercer. Floor-to-ceiling windows turn the surrounding paddocks and grasslands into large artworks for the interior spaces, almost rendering any interior adornment superfluous. Textiles and artworks are used sparingly to add subtle hints of colour and texture to the home, along with artefacts and pieces collected on the owners’ travels. Griffiths and Mercer subscribe to the Slow Movement when it comes to decorating, preferring to take their time and let their new home’s interior grow organically in décor and styling. y first dome experience was in the Royal Exhibition Building. I remember standing beneath the hemispherical ceiling convinced I had a magical connection to the heavens. I was 11, right at that point where girls begin to experience powerful yearnings that can no longer be satisfied by Saturday morning cartoons. My body was in a strange new territory but my brain hadn’t learnt the language. Inexplicably I wanted a horse, but since we lived on top of our shop in St Kilda that was impossible. My father, in an attempt to distract me from horses, dragged me along to the Caravan Show. I have no recollection of caravans, only the impact of the dome and trying to decipher the four mottos underneath it: dei gratia – by the grace of God; carpe diem – seize the day; sapere aude – dare to be wise; and benigno numine – with benign power. Hemisphere have long been associated with the heavens as a cosmic canopy and domes have often been decorated with stars and astrological symbols, signifying a link between heaven and earth, a gateway to the spiritual world. This explains why domes have been used predominantly in religious buildings – churches, cathedrals and tombs. Despite of the decreased use of of domes in the modern and postmodern eras, those domed buildings that have been built are more for entertainment than religious purposes. The Royal Exhibition Building, designed by architect Joseph Reed, was completed in 1880 for Melbourne’s first international exhibition as a symbol of the optimism

The Melbourne Hebrew Congregation was founded in 1841 and its first synagogue was for 90 years in Bourke Street in the city. It was replaced by the Toorak Road synagogue, designed by prolific Melbourne architect Nahum Barnet and completed in 1930. Barnet also designed Her Majesty’s Theatre, and interestingly the large auditorium of this synagogue was inspired by the American picture theatres of the period. The façade is in classical style with its portico and Corinthian pillars. However, the copper dome, which is more than 30 metres high, is an oriental inspiration. The green layer of copper carbonate, called verdigris, makes this dome a landmark. \

charles m. reaD sTore In some cultures the dome is associated with the breast. Read’s emporium stands out with its twin green domes. Designed by architects H.W. & F.B. Tompkins and built about 1914-15, this department store was built in the heyday of Chapel Street’s retail dominance, long before the words “cash, cheque or savings?” were part of our everyday transactions. The street level was altered in the 1970s and the store renamed Pran Central, but the building remains otherwise unaltered in its Palazzo style. Perhaps the domes aimed to raise shoppers’ consciousness so they could answer existential questions such as, “Does my bum look big in this?” \

and achievements of Melburnians in the late 19th century. Melbourne was basking like a diva in its gold rush – why not flaunt it? Reed’s lavish design combined elements from Byzantine, Romanesque, Lombardic and Italian Renaissance buildings. The dome was modelled on Brunelleschi’s 15th-century cathedral in Florence. In 1901, the interior was redecorated under John Ross Anderson for the opening of the first Commonwealth Parliament of Australia. The dome was painted to represent the sky. A frieze depicts agricultural products, a symbol of our wealth. The arches have lunettes (half-moon spaces above the cornices) depicting peace, war, federation and government. The federation image shows Britannia welcoming the six federated states as young women, while the government image shows knowledge enthroned, surrounded by figures representing the arts, education and defence. Eight women symbolise the four seasons, night and morning, justice and truth. Under the dome are plaster heads from the first decorative scheme of 1880; these include an indigenous Australian, a Chinese man and an Indian. The building has survived many incarnations, from housing the inaugural Federal Parliament to an influenza hospital. Toorak synagogue

Distinguished architects Lloyd Tayler and Alfred Dunn designed the original Commonwealth Bank of Australia building on this site. Built in 1891, it was Tayler who designed the domed banking chamber, stating it provided maximum natural light and ventilation. The bank’s directors, however, loved the domed chamber and its vaulted entrance vestibule because it created the largest and grandest bank in Melbourne! Tayler’s inspiration draws from Italian Baroque and Islamic architecture – most notably the Church of San Lorenzo in Turin by Guarino Guarini and the Great Mosque of Cordoba in Spain. It’s a breathtaking, exotic combination. \
