I would like to be able to ignore a lot more of it, and I’m sorry if it’s driven you nuts, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. TV lives for this. I have no idea if this situation is going to get any better. There’s little value in politicians being truly themselves, not if they want to be leader some day and not with a gaffe-hungry media corps hiding behind every tree. But don’t kid yourself that you were deprived of serious analysis during this campaign: the top papers, websites, TV and radio shows were full of heavy freight about debt, deficit, school-funding policy, paid parental leave, taxation. You simply could not get through the Financial Review every day, such was the amount of analysis and scrutiny. Debates between candidates were held daily on the ABC. The Drum was piled with copy; Lateline and 7.30 had forensic interviews. There was a great deal of good stuff out there. There are questions for us, the media, to answer about whether we did as well as we could. Another question is, did you? \

Back from the brink High-profile doctor Kerryn Phelps tells PETER WILMOTH how a brush with death changed her life

K

erryn Phelps could have died in 2003 from what’s called a pulmonary embolism, an adverse effect from the hormone treatment she had started a few weeks earlier. Facing a typically frantic day and heading to the airport for a crucial meeting with then prime minister John Howard, Phelps, then 45 and in her final months as president of the Australian Medical Association, couldn’t make it across the room without losing her breath. “I had been working ridiculously long hours, sometimes up to 18 hours a day,” she writes. It sounds too much, and clearly was. Phelps was later told that if she had tried to get on the plane to Canberra that day, she would likely not have survived. It was, she writes in her book, Ultimate Wellness, a fork in the road. “It was time for a reality check. My ‘brush with death’ forced me to face life with a new perspective.” That new perspective involved writing a book about how to eat right, get fit, sleep well and “find balance”. Judging by the clear-eyed energy of the 55-year-old woman sitting across the table in a Southbank café, it seems to have done the job. She remembers the terrible day of her near-death experience. “I went to the specialist at the hospital and he pretty much took one look at me and said, ‘You’re going down for a scan’. I came out of the scanner and they brought the films in and popped them up for the specialist to come in and talk to me about, but before he could read the scans my heart dropped,” she says. “I looked at them and I burst into tears. [My wife] Jackie said, ‘What’s wrong? All that white on the film, that’s good isn’t it?’ I went, ‘No, that’s blood clots’. I had blood clots all through both sides of my lungs. “Within minutes there were people everywhere and I was having oxygen put into me and needles stuck into my arms and I was raced down to the intensive-care unit and there I was in hospital for the next eight days reassessing where I was at and where I was going. “When I was in hospital I had to get help to walk from to the bathroom and back because I couldn’t breathe. Gradually, after weeks and months, my

energy levels and fitness improved and I was told I would be able to get back to normal health.” It was a huge relief, but a shocking wake-up call, and it inspired Phelps to broaden her medical horizons. “Part of my own journey of awareness was the different types of therapies outside of the medical treatment that saved my life,” she says. “[I wondered] what other treatments could I use, what other activities could I do that would give me back that sense of fitness? I’d been a fitness instructor and I’d always aspired to develop my fitness – how could I get back there, as I got older particularly? “The other thing I was told was that, once I reached menopause in the future, I wouldn’t ever be able to take HRT [hormone replacement therapy]. So I had to start looking, and also on behalf of my patients who wanted to take HRT, to look at treatments that were non-HRT treatments for menopause ... It really set me on a very detailed path of looking at those integrated approaches to a whole range of problems.” It had been “quite emotionally traumatic” knowing she might have died, but she was able to turn it into a positive. “I write in the book about having a sense of gratitude for things that are good in your life. And there’s one thing about having a health crisis or a near-miss and that is every day you say a few words of gratitude for the fact that it is another day, I’m feeling well, everything’s going great.” Making herself better was one of her most important challenges, as it is with so many others, she says. “I think people are searching for answers for wellness. People will pick up a book on the latest fad diet or the latest exercise program and do it for a little while and they might feel a bit better but they don’t get to that ultimate wellness because there might be other areas of their life that they’re ignoring. The book is a holistic approach – physical, emotional and spiritual health.”

rofessor Phelps had every reason to feel under the pump. A general practitioner, Phelps was the first woman federal president of the Australian Medical Association and, in three years from 2000, had addressed a wide range of medical issues including the medical workforce shortage and establishing an advisory committee on indigenous health. She has been a high-profile and respected voice about medical issues for many years through her work in the media, including a column in The Australian Women’s Weekly, health editor for Channel Nine’s Today show and regular contributions to newspapers. A long-time advocate for gay rights – including gay marriage – Phelps and her partner, Jackie, married twice: in New York in 1998, then again 13 years later. “In 1998 Jackie and I travelled to New York and we were married in a religious ceremony,” she says. “People whose marriages are recognised under the law have a ceremony and the civil paperwork done at the same time. In our case the ceremony was performed in 1998, then we had to wait until the laws changed in New York to go back again to do a civil ceremony and the paperwork in 2011.” How did she feel after getting married? “On a personal level it was elation and a sense of resolution for us to have the legal paperwork completed. But, because we’re citizens of Australia, as soon as you land in Australia you’re not recognised as legally married, so it was a sense of work still to be done.” Phelps has three children, two from her first marriage. Daughter Jaime, 32, is a dietitian in Phelps’ clinics (she has one general practice and one multidisciplinary medical clinic) and son Carl, 29, is an aged-care nurse and treats dementia patients. Last year Phelps and Jackie adopted Gabi, now 14. “Jackie and I did crisis foster care,” Phelps says.

“Gabi came to us in a fostering situation, initially. She was nine.” In 2010 the law in NSW changed so that same-sex parents could adopt a child together. Previously only one of the parents was able to adopt. “To live our lives, we seem to have to lobby to have laws changed,” Phelps says. Gabi’s adoption came through in March 2012. “Jackie and I are really proud of her,” Phelps says. “She’s a keen student, she’s a bright, bubbly person. “I’ve known her since she was a toddler. She’s always had this wonderful positive outlook on life. She’s just a treasure. Every parent of a 14-year-old knows there are challenges parenting teens but she makes it a pleasure.” How does Phelps feel going back to being the parent of a teenager? “I think there are advantages and disadvantages to parenting again when you’re older,” she says. “A lot of people who have second families go through the same thing. But for me the pleasure of watching this young person develop and grow towards the adult she will become far outweighs the difficulties and the challenges.” I ask Phelps about the increasingly large role grandparents are playing in the lives of their grandchildren. She says it’s only the numbers that are new. “I think grandparents have always had to step up when the parents were found wanting,” she says. “Doing the work with Barnardo’s [Phelps and Jackie are ambassadors for the children’s charity’s mother-of-the-year award], we have become very aware – and certainly since we started doing foster caring – of the work that needs to be done in the community. “There are 110 confirmed cases of neglect or abuse of children in Australia every day. In New South Wales alone, one child dies every two weeks from abuse or neglect. That is a national tragedy and it’s a challenge to us all. Just because somebody can procreate doesn’t make them a good parent. “Quite often it’s grandparents who are in the role of needing to pick up the pieces when the parents can’t or won’t do it themselves. And if there are no close family members who can do it, then it really falls to other members of the community who are able to, to step forward to help out. “But while we talk about some grandparents who have to step in, there are very many others who see that as their great joy in life. I was speaking to another woman yesterday in her 60s, she loves nothing better than a couple of days a week jumping in to see her grandson. “Every case is different. Wonderful, highly motivated, competent parents who don’t necessarily need the childcare want their children to have that relationship with their grandparents.” Phelps has always been active and since the 2003 emergency, she puts even greater store in exercise. “There are certain exercises I do as a baseline every day because that’s what I need to do, and that’s a walk every day. But there are things I do that I love that have the side benefit of fitness, and that’s kayaking, kayak surfing, stand-up paddle. It’s a very fun way of gaining core strength.” Phelps never took her survival – and her second chance at life – for granted. “I spent a lot of time thinking and fearing in hospital about what I would never be able to do again,” she says. “When I turned 50, Jackie said, ‘What do you want to do for your birthday? It’s an important milestone’. I said, ‘I’d like to go and ski in Aspen’. I didn’t know how I’d go exercising at altitude. She said. ‘OK’. I went up the ski lift and strapped on the skis and headed off down the slope and thought, ‘I can do it’!” \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au We Welcome your feedback @

he is not perfect. He came to the household with his own set of domestic aberrations. I have the “euuuuueee yuck, I can’t do that” thing, he has “if you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist” disorder. If things are out of place, better to put them on my bedside table or in the laundry cupboard, which now cannot be opened without a landslide. The most annoying manifestation of the “if you can’t see it, it doesn’t exist” mode of operation is the propensity for sweeping dust and the detritus of everyday life into a crumbly little pile in the corner of the kitchen. You then leave it there for, like, days. It is a strange and puzzling practice; one that says I care, but not that much. I want clean floors, mostly, but only the bit of the floor I can see. Someone else will be along to finish the job. Someone who wants clean floors more than me. It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that when you sweep a kitchen floor you will come across a dried-up pea. Even if you haven’t had peas for weeks. They are escape artists, possibly equal in skill only to Rice Bubbles and hundreds and thousands. The pile in the kitchen corner usually contains crumbs, one pea, and a red or blue hundred and thousand. And a hair tie. Always a hair tie. While I spend every morning searching all the bathroom drawers looking for hair ties so the girls can have plaits for school, I never remember that the place to find them is the pile of dust in the corner of the kitchen floor. And on my bedside table. \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.

ast week I emptied the vacuum cleaner for the first time ever. I now have sufficient evidence to justify the fact that I have consistently, over the course of many years, snuck that vacuum back into the cupboard every time it felt a bit full. Because it’s a filthy, thankless job and, if I put it back in the cupboard quickly, the other adult in this house will get to it some time in the future. What is that stuff, those balls of grit and paper and fluff? Where does it come from? What process happens between the floor and the nozzle that makes everything grey and stuck together? Emptying the vacuum is a stomach-turning job, akin to collecting the dog poo from the back garden or cleaning the toilet. There is something to be said for turning a blind eye when such things need doing – when the drain plug in the kitchen sink is filled with congealed slimy bits of things you cooked three days ago, the basket beside the toilet is bursting with empty toilet paper roll holders and the back seat of the car is covered in sand, slurpie juice and suspect bits of brown mud. Walk away. Walk away. Someone else with a stronger gut will be along soon. I am well aware that the avoid-until-someone-else-comesalong principle of household management is not a very responsible, grown-up one. You can’t expect others to pick up after you, said our mothers in mixed tones of frustration and anger. But now that I am myself a mother, I say you can, actually, if the thing that needs picking up is ugly, squishy in a wet kind of way or has hair in it. Luckily for me, the other adult in this house has a strong stomach. He is OK with dog poo and an overstocked compost bin. But

REVIEWS YOUNG BLOODS DINER

(DaRRIaN TRayNOR)

on’t be put off by the name. It sounds exclusionist, as if you need to be a certain age or temperament to eat here. The website reinforces the message, advertising Young Bloods Diner as “a meeting place for the young and the young at heart”. For some reason I’m picturing a West Side Story chorus line in bushranger beards and cuffed denim. But Young Bloods Diner turns out to be a catholic type of café. For Sunday lunch, when the adjoining Rose Street Artists’ Market is running at full tilt with flush hipsters, the crowd here feels comfortably middle class, and no less pleasant for being so. There’s a laid-back, light-filled sense to the place that should make anyone feel at home. Perhaps because, until recently, this was a home. The market’s co-founder, Adam Ferrante, and his family lived here, pre-makeover. The dining room used to be a bedroom and storage area. The bay window at the front, looking onto a petite balcony and the passing parade of Rose Street, was the market’s office. The kitchen was the lounge and the upstairs roof terrace was originally the second bedroom. Now it’s all terrazzo flooring and designer light installations, yellow-tiled walls and a breezy indoor-outdoor, upstairs-downstairs, anywhere-you’recomfortable vibe. Chef Sascha Randle, formerly of the Builders Arms and PM24, complements the makeover with a menu of equally good taste. The cuisine could be broadly and blandly described as modern Australian but there’s plenty of personality in offerings such as the Country Women’s Associationfriendly devilled eggs and a lush breakfast set of coddled eggs with Ortiz anchovies and parmesan. Randle’s food, in turn, is complemented by the wine list, a smart page of local and imported heroes that ranges from a highly drinkable roussanne viognier to an affordable Abruzzese Montepulciano and a Bendigo shiraz-cab blend. Something for everyone, and keenly priced in the $30-$40 and $50 brackets. There is also a come-hither cocktail line-up of such bespoke booze as a Market Mule (apple vodka, ginger beer, red wine and lime) and Carlton Lemonade (gin, elderflower, lemon juice, mint and cucumber). Just the ticket for a lazy afternoon on the roof terrace with its summery blue, white and yellow colouring, jaunty macramé potplant hangers and views over converted warehouses to the city skyline. Those devilled eggs with bread and butter pickles seem so old-school Anglo-Australian until my American lunch date assures me they’re also a classic Fourth of July dish. “These are nicer than my mum’s,” he says, munching on cucumber slices pickled in vinegar, mustard seeds and turmeric. There’s not much devil in the eggs but they’re an enjoyable snack. The four salads, priced at $15 or less, are all hearty, if such a thing is possible when talking about salads. None will rewrite the canon of gourmet salads but all are done well and look appetising. Hazelnuts and breadcrumbs add some crunch to

(rather soft) roasted cauliflower florets muddled with chunks of confit ocean trout. I keep thinking how much nicer it would be if the trout was smoked and the cauliflower was crunchier, more charred, and warm. But again, it’s enjoyable enough. So is the salad of raw and confit artichoke slices on a bed of endive laced with slivers of sweet pear, salty pecorino and nutty almond. There’s more oomph in the medley of beetroot – some marinated, some roasted – plated with fat, supple slices of corned ox (beef), walnuts and creamy horseradish. The menu’s “larger plates” have the biggest flavours, ranging from chicken pot pies to a perfectly tasty linguine tossed with bacon bits and clams. The remaining two offerings are pure pleasure – an al dente potato galette layered with slow-cooked short rib and baked until golden, topped with a grilled egg and bottomed with sautéed greens. Hard to imagine a more balanced meal. And the spaetzle, essentially

mac and cheese with a German accent. This puddle of chewy dumplings lacquered with melted parmesan and gruyère is enough to put a childish smile on the face, despite the fact Randle has snuck in some greens in the form of wilted witlof, radicchio, cavolo nero and rods of braised leek. There’s a hazelnut crust on top too, so this version almost qualifies as health food. In a caramel-flavoured showdown between the pumpkin brûlée and the rice pudding, the pud wins for its cardamom and orange-scented moat of runny caramel bordering a snow-white mush of vanilla-flecked rice. The one thing that would make it more delicious is if the caramel had been left on the heat a bit longer to thicken and richen, but, like the rest of Young Bloods Diner, it’s just fine as it is. \ khill@theweeklyreview.com.au tO read mOre revieWs

sore leg was the first sign that something was wrong with nine-year-old Brooke Cusken. Initially, her parents weren’t too concerned. It could be growing pains. It might have been an injury she picked up playing netball. But a week later, the pain in Brooke’s leg was getting worse. Her parents, Sam and Jo, took her to a doctor, and then to a physiotherapist. X-rays were taken; a lesion was identified in her tibia. Within days, they were talking to a surgeon at the Royal Children’s Hospital. More scans; a week later, a biopsy. Then several excruciating days of waiting, thinking, not knowing, and worrying. On Brooke’s 10th birthday, Jo received the phone call that told her Brooke had an aggressive, invasive cancer called osteosarcoma. Similar heartbreaking calls are made to the parents of about 220 Victorian children and adolescents every year. At any one time, about 1400 Victorian children are in cancer treatment. Brooke’s father, Sam, took the news hard. Last year, his mother had had a tough battle with breast cancer. He and Jo cried for hours. However, that afternoon they each put on a brave face to welcome 50 friends and family into their home to celebrate Brooke’s birthday. Sam and Jo were determined their daughter would enjoy the day, so kept the gut-wrenching news to themselves. “Walking in to our first appointment, past so many sick children, was pretty overwhelming,” Jo says. “We had four strangers in the room with us when

Looking back, McGinn is extremely grateful for the support he and his family received. “Programs like music, art and play therapy definitely hold families together on this journey,” he says. On Friday, October 11, the CCCF will hold its annual fund-raiser, the Million Dollar Lunch, for 400 guests at the Myer Mural Hall. In its ninth year, the event has raised close to $10 million to support Victorian children with cancer and their families. For the event, everything is donated except waiting staff and some production logistics. Exceptional food prepared by celebrity chefs is matched with premium local and international wines. Prizes include an $80,000 Lexus, generously donated by Lexus of Blackburn, and the first-class entertainment is free. All money raised goes towards making a difference for Victorians in need. Jo Cusken hopes money raised at this year’s lunch will continue to support new and existing CCCF programs. “It’s a sad reality, but each week we meet new families coming in,” she says. “I hope they can be afforded the same level of care that we have been blessed to receive.” If all goes to plan, Brooke’s treatment will be over by Christmas. “We’re going to have a big holiday to celebrate,” Brooke says. “I want to go someplace warm, like Dubai. Relaxed chic is the philosophy behind Carmen Bianco’s label. She’s all about soft layering with a directional purpose – find deconstructed blazers and silk dresses in her collection for spring/summer 2013-14.

he might be the wife of shoe king Anthony Bianco jnr, but Carmen Bianco is a name in her own right in the fashion business. The Melbourne designer who runs her own label, Lounge Apparel, is all about creating contemporary outfits that walk on the casual yet chic side of life. For her spring/summer 2013-14 collection, Bianco has broken her own fashion rules to come up with a capsule range that’s a tad more decadent. While her designs are usually dominated by block colours – especially black and white – she’s factored in colour to entertain her clients. “Our customers will be surprised at the print and colour we have injected into the range,” Bianco says. “It’s something they have been asking us to do and we hope we’ve delivered.” The campaign, which uses model Pia Miller, is big on bright yellow and botanical prints – think washed silk with firefly prints and neutral tones for a familiar cornerstone of the brand. Lounge, which is known for soft layering, delivers everything from drawstring pants to deconstructed blazers this time. For Bianco, the emphasis was to bring a sophisticated design aesthetic to her range. “The beautiful soft shirting is a first for Lounge, as are silk dresses,” she says. “The range is still relaxed, creative and timeless, but there is a clear push away from the oversized shapes from past seasons.”

Bianco, who also does school drop-offs and runs a household, says she wouldn’t have it any other way. “When you own your own business, you are constantly living and breathing your work,” she says. “It’s imperative I am involved in the day-to-day running of Lounge. I am so passionate about my brand that it never really feels like work to me. I’m also a mum, so I try to balance work with a healthy dose of family time. Once the kids are asleep, I hop on my iPad and do my research on images, prints, artists, designers and gather further inspiration.’’ She’s a fan of Helmut Lang, Rick Owens and Alexander Wang and loves these labels for their relaxed, contemporary and creative flair. When it comes to travel, you’ll find Bianco plane-hopping between Hong Kong and Bali. “I also travel once a year to the US or UK, but I make a big effort to visit our suppliers in China,” she says. “I’m a bit of a control freak so I need to see the product being produced. But having a close relationship with my suppliers is also of huge importance to me as a businesswoman. “Now that the kids are older, I’ve also taken them on my buying trips – their first trip was to Hong Kong and they absolutely loved it. It’s given them a greater understanding of what mum actually does.” jrocca@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.loungeapparel.com.au

ingers are great and cotton buds are handy but if you want a flawless finish you have to rely on brushes. Clearly I am talking about make-up brushes. Over the years, I have realised this topic can be polarising. There are two schools of thought – one for the bristled wonder and the other dead against it. Why can’t we all just get along? As Pat McGrath, global make-up phenomenon, says: “Start with your fingers and finish with your brushes.’’ But nobody needs a million and one brushes to do their face. A few well-selected ones will suffice. Let’s start:

important parts of a Brush The head – the bristles. Look for brushes that are neatly trimmed with no falling or wonky hair. They should feel luxurious and not prickly. Test brushes by swirling them on the inside of your arm. The ferrule – the metal sleeve holding the bristles to the handle. Take a close look at the crimp: the tighter the crimp, the better the brush. Gently tug at hairs – if clumps come away look at another brand. The handle – should be well balanced, not too heavy or too light. The length and thickness of the handle are down to personal taste, but keep in mind the purpose of the brush.

five rules to help choose your Brushes

• Consider your daily make-up routine – keep your everyday make-up look in mind when shopping for brushes. • Invest in good brushes – be smart about the kind of money you are paying for brushes. These days synthetic bristles are just as good or better than natural bristles. • Do not forget to use your fingers, too – your fingers do not become redundant as soon as you buy a brush. • Test the brushes that come with make-up – brushes that come with some luxury brands can be very good. • Keep it simple, sweetheart – unless you are a full-time face-painter, you do not need many brushes.

Keep it simple, sweetheart

taking care of your Brushes

• As much as people love using alcohol-based cleaners, they dry out your brush bristles. Hand wash your brushes once a week or fortnightly: • Hold the brush tightly at the ferrule. This ensures that water does not get into the glue in the ferrule. • Apply a little mild shampoo, agitate the hair gently and rinse thoroughly. Then squeeze out the excess water. • Lie brush flat with the handle resting on a counter and the bristles hanging over the edge. Air dry thoroughly. \ dnaidu@theweeklyreview.com.au

play A KIND OF FABULOUS HATRED \ fortyfivedownstairs, September 12-22, $35/$28, 70 min (SUPPLIED)

As World War I draws to a close, Australian baker Harry (Dan Spielman) signs up for duty on the Western Front. Confronted by unbearable horrors, he deserts his regiment and takes refuge in an isolated cottage belonging to French widow Colombe (Marie Bunel). There, an unusual romance develops, with the two finding a precious sort of understanding despite neither speaking a word of the other’s language. Directed by Rachel Ward, this telemovie is a tender, rather lyrical piece, thoroughly cinematic despite its small-screen origins. In the midst of epic happenings, Ward finds room for a slight but potent story, exploring themes of grief, redemption and bravery. Indeed, Harry is the bravest of cowards, defending his love for Colombe whatever the cost to himself. As such this is a pleasing antidote to the resurgent Anzac myth. Here, there is no glory in bloodshed or patriotism but rather in our loyalty to our loved ones. The film was shot in Western Ausralia but the setting feels convincingly French. As Harry, Spielman possesses a suitably muted strength while Bunel offers a portrait of repressed passion and joy. This feels something of a treat – Australian television of a truly international calibre. The final moments might tend towards sentimentality, but for the most part this is a work of great subtlety. \

The dark lure of Sylvia Plath’s poetry remains powerful for a particular kind of adolescent. Here was a poet who seemed to mean every melancholy word, whose suffering in the face of the everyday was bound to speak to the alienated. Australian playwright Barry Dickins explores his fascination with Plath in a new play laced with the sort of black humour buried in the poet’s work. His show tackles Plath’s difficulty in reconciling herself to being both artist and mother, and her trouble balancing her creative urges against the demands of a mundane existence. \ to read more reviews

After hearing Michael Fullilove talk about his new book in a Radio National interview, we were intrigued to learn more about the five extraordinary Americans handpicked by President Roosevelt to report on the European theatre of war between 1939 and 1941. Diplomat Sumner Welles, war hero “Wild Bill” Donovan, FDR adviser Harry Hopkins, banker Averell Harriman and former Republican presidential candidate Wendell Wilkie accepted a commission to assess the European situation and cement ties with Britain. Lowy Institute executive director Fullilove has created a masterwork and an ideal gift for history buffs. \

This handsome hardcover is a must for those who know the shop and wish to replicate their experiences, or those who simply love to cook sweet treats. The 1986 theft of Picasso’s Weeping Woman from the National Galley of Victoria has prompted celebrated Melbourne writer Chris Womersley to consider the art world’s dark and seedy side. Country boy Tom Button’s long-held desire to move to Melbourne, study at university and live a bohemian life is realised when he arrives at the Cairo apartment block in Fitzroy, and befriends its curious residents. Painters and drug addicts Edward and Gertrude Degraves, their composer friend Max and his abused wife Sally, lure Tom into their circle and into their confidence as they plot an ambitious art heist. Guaranteed good reading. \

Lebanese-American scholar and philosopher Nassim Nicholas Taleb has a powerful message. To achieve great things, he argues, we need to embrace change rather than fear it, resist rationalism and find opportunities in the randomness and unpredictability of life. “We didn’t get to where we are today thanks to policymakers,” he writes in this terrific book, now in an affordable paperback format, “but thanks to the appetite for risks and errors of a certain class of people who we need to encourage, protect and respect.” \

Education \ Some educators are born to teach, writes Cheryl CritChley

ublic speaking can leave the most confident among us weak at the knees.Studies consistently find talking in front of a crowd is one of life’s biggest fears. But even as a child, Michelle Robertson loved it. “I was quite confident speaking up or being the one to want to host the class play or performance,” she says. “I enjoyed that. I wasn’t shy of a microphone.” Becoming a public-speaking and debating coach was a natural fit; she now does both at Siena College in Camberwell, where she has taught since 2000. Robertson is passionate about public speaking and the confidence it can give students. It’s not easy, but those who master it have a vital skill for study and life. “Because they have to do oral presentations in a whole range of subjects, it absolutely helps across their whole education,” she says. “It’s a lifelong skill. Everyone has to communicate.” The youngest of five children, Robertson grew up in Fawkner. Her father, Clarrie, worked for Telstra’s precursors for 59 years while her mother, Raye, stayed at home with the children. Now 43, Robertson had barely started at St Marks Primary School in Fawkner when she knew she wanted to teach. With seven years between her and the next sibling, she often made her own fun and it always revolved around teaching and talking. “From a young age, five or six, I just played schools and made up imaginary classrooms in the backyard,” she says. “It was just something I always knew I was going to be, a teacher. I really believe it’s a vocation.” Robertson attended Mercy College in Coburg,

system so accepted a short-term contract at the Academy of Mary Immaculate, Victoria’s oldest girls’ secondary college. “I got a six-month replacement position, but it ended up turning into a full-time position and I was there for five years,” Robertson says. “I wasn’t nervous; I loved it. I couldn’t wait to get into the classroom.” Robertson taught English, religion and history and was English co-ordinator at just 25. She was a natural with students and learnt from those around her, which she urges other teachers to do. Debating and public speaking were a big part of Robertson’s career from the start, as was her dedication. “Pretty much my life revolved around planning lessons and correcting essays and giving lots of time to the school,” she says. In 1997, Robertson joined Loyola College in Watsonia, where she taught English and was later year 12 co-ordinator. Loyola hosted Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) competitions, and encouraged boys to get involved. “We bribed them with chocolates and lollies,” Robertson says. “They weren’t too bad. I just think it’s so important for them, a great skill to develop.” Ready for a new challenge, Robertson joined Siena as English co-ordinator in 2000, around the time her husband, Trevor, left teaching to work with AFL Victoria. Trevor was the Victorian Auskick Co-ordinator and is now Schools Development Manager in Victoria. Life became busier when Declan, now 11, Angus, 5, and Hamish, 3, arrived. Robertson had

courtyards and spiral staircases contrasting contemporary learning spaces. Robertson loves the modern set-up of two levels of three classrooms joined by glass doors that can be opened into one huge area. Outside are tables and seats where groups can spread out. The rooms have splashes of vibrant reds, oranges and greens, modular tables, and walls students can literally write on. In year 9, the girls leave campus for a week for Siena in the City, which Robertson has enhanced with the help of program developers Catherine Judd and Gayle Peggie. “The girls have to be independent in making their way into the city and home at the end of the day,” Robertson says. “They have to prove a hypothesis based on the city.” Small teams investigate hypotheses such as whether Melbourne is state of the art, Australia’s sporting capital or family friendly. They visit city landmarks, complete the Koori heritage walk and help at the FareShare kitchen, which prepares and distributes food for the needy. Improving such programs and creating opportunities are always uppermost in Robertson’s mind. She keeps abreast of the latest research, participated in the Victorian Institute of Teaching’s High Performance Teacher pilot last year and works with pre-service teachers. Each year, she takes on a student teacher to guide the next generation and learn from them. Her latest project is Looking for Learning, which analyses the way students learn and develops ways to improve learning and teaching. Robertson also worked with mentor Helen Kelly

in the blood which went to year 10 at the time, and finished school at St Aloysius College in North Melbourne. Both Catholic girls’ schools cemented her love of education, and faith-based education. Two teachers were particularly inspirational. Her grade 5 and 6 teacher, John Squerzi, made learning “an adventure”. “He inspired us and he would bring a book to life,” Robertson says. “He’d have … life-sized models of the story or the characters. He really cared about his students and watching them grow and develop, and it was exciting to be in his class.” At St Aloysius, Jennifer Vereker-Bergin reinforced Robertson’s destiny. “She taught me English and literature for year 11 and 12, and in many ways I just wanted to model myself on her as a teacher – her intelligence and skills and her way of helping us to really deconstruct a text, and the discussions,” Robertson says. “I just wanted to be her.” Robertson was vice-captain at Mercy College in year 10 and a sports house captain at St Aloysius in year 12, where she enjoyed dancing, netball and swimming. She then completed a bachelor of arts at the University of Melbourne and a diploma of education at Australian Catholic University. When Robertson graduated in 1991, teaching jobs were scarce. She wanted to work in the Catholic

maternity leave after each birth and now works part-time, running debating and public speaking, co-ordinating the year 9 Siena in the City program and teaching English and philosophy. As any parent knows, juggling work and family is not easy. “It just means you have to work in with your partner and make sure that everybody’s very organised,” Robertson says. “It can be a battle getting out of the door in the morning. You just have to make it work if that’s what you want.” Robertson also helps to manage Declan’s Heidelberg Tigers under-11s footy team, which Trevor coaches. Declan also plays basketball and tennis, and all three boys swim. Robertson, a strong believer in school and community involvement, is also School Advisory Council chairwoman at Declan’s school, St John’s Primary School in Heidelberg. “As a working mum, this is my way of making a contribution to the school community and keeping involved in his education.” Siena, a Catholic school in the Dominican tradition, was originally a convent. The sisters began teaching there in 1940. The school community is still very close, with about 730 girls from years 7-12. The campus blends old and new, with stately

around the ideas of US education leader Heidi Hayes Jacobs, who says 21st century learning must have 21st century assessments. As a result there are now plans to personalise learning and ensure it challenges and engages students while encouraging personal growth and critical thinking. Siena’s small size makes it conducive to such innovation, which this dedicated educator embraces. All her spare time, apart from the boys’ activities, is spent developing her teaching and that of others. Partly because of Robertson’s dedication, Siena made the state debating finals last year and this year, finishing top of the Camberwell region C-grade ladder. In 2011, the school started its Antonio de Montesinos award for excellence in public speaking, named after an outspoken 16th century Dominican friar. Robertson hopes it will encourage those mortified by public speaking to give it a go. She says simple techniques can make all the difference. “I generally say to take three points in the room, just past the heads of the other girls, and look at those. The audience will actually think you’re looking at them but you’re not,” she says. \ ccritchley@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.siena.vic.edu.au

hen Ellen DeGeneres came to Melbourne, she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, visited Rossi’s old school. Why would you return to a place that insisted on rules and conformity? A place where rules must be obeyed because the consequences of not obeying could reverberate like a cannon shot through the rest of your life. That’s what my parents told me constantly. Being the dutiful, neurotic child that I was, I obeyed – believing the world would dissolve into chaos if I didn’t wear my regulation uniform grey underpants or cover my books obsessively with clear plastic covers. As wobbly as my school years were, it’s undeniably where I learnt to deal with the cryptic ways of the world, along with a trailer-load of information I’ve never needed. Logarithms – what is this voodoo? Why bother with tangents and cotangents? Once you’ve learnt to add, subtract, divide and multiply, why confuse mathematics by introducing letters and brackets? Sure, I was enthusiastic about English, French and art because we could express ourselves, and the teachers were passionate and engaging. But I can’t be the only one who found geography mind-numbingly boring. It should have been exhilarating, nurturing my curiosity for exotic destinations and diverse cultures. But after an hour of hearing about the soils of the tropical savanna, I be free (in most subjects), compulsory (until age 15) decided to glue my hair together with clag. and secular. Known as the “castle on the hill”, there’s a hint of harry Potter’s hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry about this iconic school. the building, designed by Edwin Evan Smith and built in 1928, is positioned for optimal viewing from alexandra avenue, with low-lying land in the foreground used as a sports oval and the land in between terraced with steps, paths and roadways. this creates an impressive and uninterrupted view of the building from the north and west. the school emblem, a unicorn head on a jewelled crown with the school motto on a scroll below, also has a young wizard-in-training mystique about it. \

Founded in 1873, albert Park Primary School was initially known as the Mechanics’ Institute School No. 1181. the design of the building by Joseph Schneider won the competition for school buildings after the Education act of 1872. this is an unusual design for a school; the classrooms are long and the style is a functional gothic without ornament. the design was never reused probably because of the awkward length and the two storeys. I’d hazard a guess that in the early days many students survived this original austere atmosphere with the help of imaginary friends who were naughty and got away with it – triumphantly embodying every child’s fantasy. \

have you ever noticed the curved corners of this building in the city? their smoothness visually reinforces a sense of speed and efficiency. Designed by chief architect Percy Everett for the Public Works Department, Building No. 9 was built in two stages. the first was for the Electrical trades School and opened in 1938. the second, northern part of the building, with a façade to Franklin Street, was completed in 1941. often taken for granted, this remarkably stylish building – one of the few large public buildings designed in the streamlined horizontal Moderne style – was considered perfect for technical training. \ SEPTEMBER 11, 2013 \ The weekly review 35

YOUR KEY TO CAMBERWELL

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY W

hen architect Katherine Kemp imagined how she could turn two adjoining, yellow-brick warehouses into a mecca for coffee lovers, she knew the centrepiece of the design had to be the roaster. Code Black Coffee in Brunswick is the latest incarnation of Joseph Haddad’s Cafenatics business. The operation includes a roastery and distribution facility, and a café with a well-equipped kitchen. On a Monday morning, the tables are already filling, the coffee machine is hissing busily and a stream of locals duck in and out for takeaways. “This is such a big empty space and we had to give it definition,” says Kemp, a principal of Zwei Interiors Architecture. “We felt this was the church of coffee, much like you walk into a church and can see the altar, the transepts, the nave and the pulpit and everything is exposed. So we put the roaster down the back and treat it like the altar. As you walk in your eye is drawn down to the roaster that’s the heartbeat of the organisation.” Code Black Coffee’s transformation from a former plumbing warehouse with partitioned office spaces to a modern, pared-back café and roastery has won the Hospitality Design category in the 2013 Australian Interior Design Awards. The cavernous space has been seamlessly divided into business areas. The large factory-style door opens to the streamlined café. A large steel communal bench is a focal point and the steel is a recurring theme – in the kitchen, the original factory windows and in the girders dotted throughout the space. “The guy who made our stainless-steel equipment has worked in Brunswick for eons,” says Kemp. The coffee preparation and pour-over bench stretches from the entrance towards the roastery – the bench is made of concrete and was constructed and poured in situ. The factory’s original concrete floor has simply been ground back to give it a polished look. Shelving, partitions and benches are made of environmentally friendly and highly practical OSB-oriented strand board. Some is in its natural, warm orange as a feature, while the remainder is stained black to tie in with the overall matt-black and steel theme.
