don’t know who was more breathless: the excited TV guru Adam Boland as he announced that McDonald’s was to be the major, on-set sponsor of Ten’s forthcoming breakfast show, Wake Up, or the collective audience of Australian mothers who now realised they would have to deal with kids nagging for Maccas from sunrise to sundown. The groundbreaking sponsorship deal will see “the smallest McDonald’s in the country” installed on set, not for the public, but to serve breakfast items to hosts Natarsha Belling, James Mathison, Nuala Hafner and Natasha Exelby and their guests. Nutritionists such as Rosemary Stanton slammed the idea, and you don’t need me to tell you why. But the network couldn’t see the problem. “McDonald’s is not in the main shot of Wake Up. That is, it is not part of the main set, it is part of the studio.” Was this an elaborate hoax? A fast-food outlet, and one of the most controversial, installed on a TV set? Is life so hard in commercial TV these days you have to sell real estate to the sponsors? Now before everything I’m about to say here is dismissed as the piety of an anti-commercial, publicly

funded broadcaster, let me remind you that I come from commercial journalism, that this column is written for a commercial venture, and that it has been of no concern to me that my work has been run alongside advertising for most of my working life. I have no problem with advertising. But as a presenter working in the very particular, rather strange idiom of breakfast TV, this decision seems to be a grave error of judgment. Family, health, medical and food stories are the staples of our kind of television: not a week goes by without a discussion on them, and I can’t see how you can have any credibility in discussing childhood obesity, the staggering rise in type-2 diabetes diagnoses or healthy eating with a fast-food outlet on set. In breakfast TV, if the set is on at home then children are invariably running around it at that hour, and the prospect of being nagged by the kids for Maccas must be horrifying for many mums: “But they eat it every day, mum …” I can’t know for certain, but I’m going to go out on a (very skinny) limb here and suggest that there’s no way someone such as Natarsha Belling would allow herself to

be served hash browns and McMuffins for breakfast any day of the week: that’s not how you manage to stay slim and camera-ready. Believe me. If, as I imagine, the glowing and healthy looking presenters continue to eat good food while their show pushes fast food on their viewers, then the petard of hypocrisy will await their hoisting: did no one else notice that Boland, just hours before the news broke, retweeted Oxfam Australia’s World Food Day tips for eating sustainably? Let’s wait for the hard-nosed ad guys and gals of Gruen to dissect this for us: the financial gain of the big-brand signing versus the loss of goodwill through a fast-food association, but I have a fair idea about where they’ll end up. We’ll have to see how my old mate, Russel Howcroft, now general manager of Network Ten, navigates the landmines of this discussion. But finally, most importantly, and on a genuinely, deeply felt note, let me offer my sincere sympathies to the cast and crew of Wake Up, who now have to present two hours of smiling, laughing live TV every morning surrounded by the smell of deep-frying oil. \

he’s a Logie Award winner and popular co-host on Channel Ten’s The Project. Now Carrie Bickmore can add style icon to her list of credits – and that’s without even trying. Bickmore, 32, is one of the most talked about women on Australian television, and a lot of that’s down to what she wears on the show each night. Women around the country have become obsessed with the immaculately groomed presenter’s sartorial style, and long after the studio lights are turned off, fashion bloggers dissect every detail of her outfit – mapping her look for others to replicate. Along with Big Brother’s Sonia Kruger, Bickmore is renowned in the fashion industry for generating a huge number of customer inquiries and purchases. “It’s something that still seems weird to me,” says Bickmore, mother of five-year-old Oliver. She prefers to describe herself as a working mum rather than a sartorial inspiration. “People come up to me on the street on a daily basis telling me they love what I wore on the show, where did I get it from and who is the designer. They tell me they love me in magenta. I’m like, what? I still struggle with the idea that someone wants to buy something I wore,” Bickmore says. Thanks to her stylist, Natalie Crighton, Bickmore enjoys wearing Australian designer labels such as Alice McCall and Manning Cartell. But she also has a knack for making budget items from the likes of Lovisa and Portmans appear streets ahead of their price tag. So it’s no surprise that this month she takes on the role of fashion and lifestyle ambassador – along with make-up artist Liz Kelsh – of the new Fashion and Beauty Uncovered campaign; a festival of workshops, runways and style tutorials being rolled out by shopping centres across Melbourne to celebrate spring and summer style. Her number-one style tip? “Take some risks with your wardrobe,” she says, beaming, revealing that although she now swears by leather pants, she wouldn’t have considered trying them on without a bit of pushing from her stylist. “Sometimes you just need a little encouragement,” she says. “You don’t need to buy a whole new wardrobe to keep up to date with trends. Just buy a few key items you can mix and match.” Bickmore says she was hardly fashionable in her 20s, although she’s certain at the time she thought she was. “When I look back at the outfits I wore I had no idea what I was doing. Now, being a working mum, I am not online watching trends and out shopping every weekend. It helps that I have my stylist throwing beautiful clothes at me every day,” she says. Although you would hardly pick it, given her polished TV presence, Bickmore describes herself as shy and nervous. Yet in person, she is every bit as down to earth and warm as her on-screen persona. She’s a pocket rocket in conversation, fast and snappy as if a TV ad break is approaching, and always smiling. And she wears her heart on her sleeve. “I come across as a very confident person but I have only started to feel comfortable in my own skin now that I am in my 30s,” she admits. “As a teenager there was a lot of pressure to be a certain way, and add to that the fact I was very underdeveloped for a girl, I felt very shy, even though my outer personality was bright and bubbly. The real

JANE ROCCA mEEts thE PROJECt’s CARRiE BiCkmORE me is only starting to come out now and it’s through surviving some tough times that’s made me this way,” Bickmore says. Born in Adelaide, Bickmore moved to Perth at five with her mother (Jennie) following her parents’ divorce. Her mum remarried and Bickmore inherited two older stepsisters. Like many girls, she dreamed of being a ballerina, but eventually set her sights on a career in the media, inspired in part by her father, Brian – one of the founders of the Austereo Network – who worked in radio in Adelaide and now lives in Melbourne. (He has just announced his departure from the network after 24 years.) After attending an all-girls school, Perth College, where she loved performing arts, Bickmore enrolled in journalism at Curtin University. A year before graduating she applied for, and won, a job at a Perth radio station, 92.9FM, in order to get a jump on her fellow students. It was an early sign of her drive to succeed.

A

year later, in 2001 she moved to Melbourne to work on the new Nova radio station. As well as a great career opportunity, she says the decision was also partly driven by a desire to rekindle a relationship with her father. “I always wanted to reconnect with my dad after he and mum separated,” she says. “At the time I was telling my partner, Greg [Lange], that if I moved to Melbourne we would probably end up breaking up. He told me to not worry, everything would work out. He got a job in Melbourne and we both moved from Perth.” The couple set up home in Richmond and later in Ivanhoe. She recalls arriving in Melbourne 12 years ago full of a lust for life. She would seldom say no to dancing the night away at a club, occasionally heading straight to work afterwards to read the morning news. “I look back at that and don’t know how I did it,” Bickmore says,

recalling those 5am starts. “Being young I suppose.” Young, smart, attractive and building a career, Bickmore appeared to have it all, but then her world came crashing down when, later that year, Greg was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He died in 2010. Dealing with death is hard enough but Bickmore’s public profile meant that, at just 30 years of age, she became the media’s poster girl for the grieving young widow. Everyone wanted a piece of her, but all she wanted was peace of mind. How did she come through it? “I think when you have been on the kind of ride I had in my 20s you find a certain strength within,” she says. “All the stuff that happened in my personal life, from losing Greg to having a child, I am still surprised at just how strong I was in those circumstances. “Greg’s death taught me not to sweat the small stuff. Having lived with someone living and dying with cancer showed me the importance of not getting caught up in my world of work. “Having Oliver has given me perspective too – he is pure joy. The best time of my day is the morning when I wake and see him and the night when I come home. We are very close; he is my little buddy. When I am not at work we hang out together all the time. I can’t imagine him not in my life.” Her burgeoning television career also offered a chink of light – an opportunity to think ahead. With the support of her mother, who moved to Melbourne to help with Oliver, and some nannies, she was able to piece together the jigsaw of balancing work and motherhood. Bickmore got her start on TV in 2006, while reading news at Nova, when she was offered a TV spot on Rove. “I got a call from my agent saying someone from Roving Enterprises wanted me to come in for an audition. At the time Sandra Sully read the news headlines and I thought that’s what they asked me in

to audition for, but I arrived and it was these random stories and jokes I had to deliver,” she says. “I don’t think I really knew what the job was until I said yes.” Since then she has interviewed celebrities such as Brad Pitt, had her patience tested by former Sex Pistol Johnny Lydon, who went on a sexist rant earlier this year in a very bizarre pre-record, and she got the nation laughing when she accidentally mixed up her news headlines when discussing cheap fares and Qantas – merging the two words, and blurting out c--tas. Bickmore has proved she can rise above almost any circumstance – she’s not phased by celebrity status, and can handle the heat when the going gets tough. Most importantly, she knows how to laugh at herself when a broadcast is going pearshaped. Her days start early when Oliver wakes his mum at 6.30am, tugging at her bed sheets telling her it’s time to get up. Two hours later they’re out the door of their Northcote home, sandwiches in hand, dinner planned for that night and left in the fridge. “He’s my little man,” Bickmore says. If time permits, she will fit in a quick run, walk, or Pilates class before arriving at Channel Ten in South Yarra by 10am. Twelve hours later she’ll be asleep on the couch. “I am pretty boring,” she says munching on a wrap sandwich, trying to fit in interviews, photo shoots and planning for the evening’s show all at the same time. “I don’t get out much at night. I just love being home.” It has been reported she has a new boyfriend (Project

producer Chris Walker), but she likes to keep her private life just that. While her job at the news desk revolves around finding out the nitty-gritty details of others, she’s not a fan of invasive journalism. “I am very careful with questions I ask people. If I know someone doesn’t want to talk about something then I won’t push it,” Bickmore says. “I do think it’s hard when you are a person in the limelight and people want to know things about you. I do share aspects of my life with people, it’s my nature to do so, but I have to remind myself the people around me in my personal life didn’t sign up to be exposed or be discussed.” However, as her stakes as a style icon continue to rise, it seems inevitable Carrie Bickmore will continue to be a hot topic of conversation. \ jrocca@theweeklyreview.com.au We WeLCome your feedbaCk @

permanently. Many of her customers say they saw it while stopped at traffic lights on the corner of Brighton Road and Carlisle Street, and made a note to return. When Andruszko discovered the space up for rent in the tiny strip of shops, the marble foundation plaque gave her the theme for her café. The Prahran and St Kilda United Friendly Societies and Medical Dispensary was founded in 1883 and the building housed a doctor’s surgery and medical clinic for decades. Andruszko says records show long-serving resident Dr Lawrence Schnookal tended many bullet wounds. Many things “just fell into place” to help the business succeed, she says. The footpath is wide enough for tables and on the sunny side of the street. There are council offices, schools and a crèche nearby. The food, cooked by her mother, Lyn Andruszko, has an old-fashioned English feel, featuring dishes such as bubble and squeak, pulled pork with cabbage and apple sauce, and scone sliders with jam and cream. Cakes and muffins are displayed in sparkling replica medicine cabinets, and old-fashioned bottled soft drinks are displayed atop antique scales.

he last time I dined at Kelp it was summer, my feet were covered in sand, and an accidental long lunch resulted in me enjoying the tastiest seafood linguine I’ve experienced along the peninsula. It helped that the linguini ribbons were made in-house and that the seafood mix of prawns, scallops, clams and mussels tangled in the pasta were wonderfully fresh and fat. But it was the elegant dance that a handful of juicy, roasted cherry tomatoes and brave sprinkling of dill performed with the white wine and garlic that elevated this simple dish to lofty heights. It had me happily marooned on the beach savouring those flavours for the remainder of the afternoon. So it was with great expectations that I returned on a Saturday to experience Kelp’s finer-dining evening fare. The restaurant’s clean, modern lines, dim lighting, open kitchen and black slate plates come into their own at night when the wait staff swap T-shirts for shirts and head chef Tarin McKimmie releases the handbrake on flash kitchen trickery. McKimmie took the reins from head chef Kasin Francis last year after serving under him as sous chef. She’s kept the contemporary menu, albeit with less Caribbean influence, and amped up the seasonal element, which I love. Unfortunately the menu makes for a dizzying and thoroughly confusing reading experience, with many dishes listed as a record of almost every ingredient rather than a written picture of what to expect. It left me gasping for air and searching for help. It came in spades. Our waiter was so well versed in the language of Kelp that we abandoned the menu and went with his recommendations, right down to his suggestion that we skip a craft brew plucked from a list of 20 and instead dig into a structured red wine from Coonawarra to match our meals. It’s easy to be persuaded when the wine list is as interesting, appealing, and pleasantly priced as Kelp’s. When the entrées arrived, we were grateful we’d allowed our waiter to steer our dining experience. Two overweight balls of haloumi and buffalo mozzarella came prettily plated on a thick lick of mango and Hennessy XO purée. Rolled in dukkah and parmesan before being flash fried, the balls’ spicy golden exterior gave way to an oozing cheesy centre and worked surprisingly well with the sweetness of mango. Visually, the dry crumble combination of chocolate, macadamia, orange and cranberry sandwiched in the centre works, but the sweetness was too much for me. There’s a lot going on in the entrée calamari, too. Pumpkin purée is the foundation of the tower of spiced fig and pomegranate couscous, meaty, scored calamari, Drysdale saltbush “shev” cheese, herb paste, and delicate lemon-balm tendrils. It’s a nice dish but quality components get lost in the busyness. The main dish, called Kelp’s wild vegie garden, was not just from the garden – it was a garden: a collage of

more than 10 vegetables and grains, spiced and cooked differently, then arranged on the plate to resemble a garden. A spread of du puy lentils acted as the dirt, asparagus spears the sturdier plants between the beds of lettuce, roast cherry tomatoes, baby beets and potato medallions. The concept was solid but the execution was messy and let down by a dry terracotta-potted zucchini soufflé in the centre. A dory fillet was more on the mark, the fleshy fish served alongside a lick of luscious cannellini purée, spiced with saffron and peppered with lovely smoky artichoke, juicy cherry tomatoes, chickpeas and an earthy olive tapenade. The kitchen saved the best until last and luckily I’d also saved room: a chocolate ambrosia plate, as it’s named on the menu, was a beautifully presented strip of unashamed chocolate decadence. A run of crunchy, airy chocolate puffs, chocolate twirls and cracking honeycomb was offset by a quenelle of chocolate-and-honey ice-cream, a square of rich dark-chocolate soufflé, and a caramel-chocolate mousse cake, crowned with Persian fairy floss. Sound intense? It was, and I devoured every last spoonful. I felt the same smug satisfaction I’d experienced after discovering Kelp’s linguine. Except this time it was far too cold to curl up on the beach and revel in my food memories. \ mjdaffy@theweeklyreview.com.au chocolaTe desserT plaTe

Mora love: Mirka and William. (JULIAN KINGMA) 12 The weekly review \ october 2, 2013

Mirka Mora tells PETER WILMOTH about bringing up three boys amid Melbourne bohemia

I

n her marvellously crowded Richmond studio – amid the easels, the paintings, the books, the multitude of mementoes – Mirka Mora is reflecting on bringing up three sons. “I’m a very proud mother,” she says, handing me a coffee. “I’m purring all the time like a big cat because all my kittens are beautiful. And they’re very nice to each other, too. They are three very powerful people in my life. “They were very beautiful children, and quite naughty, but they were allowed to be naughty. They had access to food, to wine, to love drama, to paint, to everything.” She turns to son William. “Good formative years, wouldn’t you say?” “We survived our upbringing,” says William. A gale of laughter from Mirka. A wry smile from William. Mirka Mora, 85, arrived in Australia from Paris in 1951 with her husband, Georges Mora, the restaurateur and gallery owner who died in 1992, and just one of her three sons, Philippe, now 64. William, 60, and Tiriel, 56, were born in Melbourne. We have gathered the family together to talk about growing up Mora. The eldest son, Philippe Mora, is a filmmaker who left Melbourne for London in 1967 and now lives in Los Angeles (among his films are Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?, an acclaimed 1975 documentary about the Depression). The middle son, William Mora, followed his father into the world of art, working with him for 10 years from 1975 and then starting his own operation, William Mora Galleries, in 1987.

“Our parents would be in the kitchen and we would be watching television. “Sweeney Reed [the son of artist Albert Tucker who was adopted by John and Sunday Reed] became a family friend and he used to love dressing up in Superman and Batman outfits. Often I’d be watching TV and he’d come leaping through the window dressed as Superman. “And they’d always try and get us to play in the garden but we had this fascination for TV, it was so new. It was only later we realised we were sitting in the library, which was hung with the original Ned Kelly paintings by Sidney Nolan. They hadn’t been donated to the NGA [National Gallery of Australia] by that point. “When the weather was good we spent a lot of time outdoors. John and Sun had cows and they would make butter, and the cows were named after different types of coffee; there was Espresso, Cappuccino, Latte, and we’d go down with John Reed to milk them. It was a bit of a rural thing in those days. “We didn’t realise it was a cultural movement, we just thought it was our parents and their friends in the next room. It was an important part of the evolution of Australia’s modern art history.” “Every time I had a new baby,” says Mirka, “I would bring my baby to Heidi. One day Sunday put one of my charcoals on a wall next to a Sidney Nolan painting. I thought I was queen of the world.” It wasn’t always easy being in this artistic milieu. “There was a lot of drama,” says Mirka. “There were things you were not allowed to say in front of Sunday

“we didn’t realise it was a cultural movement, we just thought it was our parents and their friends in the next room” The youngest, Tiriel Mora, is an actor who famously played hard-nosed TV reporter Martin Di Stasio in the TV comedy Frontline and solicitor Dennis Denuto in the film The Castle (“It’s the vibe of the thing, your honour,” he told the High Court). He lives in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales. The three boys grew up in a world of restaurants, art, parties and a life among some of the great names in modern Australian cultural history. The family lived at Grosvenor House at 9 Collins Street, where Melbourne’s artistic community would often gather. There was a toy shop next door and Fitzroy Gardens was the children’s backyard. William and Philippe would sometimes go to the cinema in Collins Street. “It was very busy, lots of people,” says William of the family’s home. “It was an open-plan studio. It was wild, people eating, drinking and partying. I remember we used to love the next day sticking our hands down the back of sofas looking for coins. My older brother and I used to collect quite a bit of money. We had a milk bar in the street so we’d buy vanilla slices. It was wonderful.” I asked what Melbourne was like in 1951. “A desert,” Mirka says. “But every city had fabulous people.” These included writers George Johnston and Charmian Clift, painters John Perceval and Arthur Boyd and actor Barry Humphries. “We had an incredible, busy life with fabulous people,” she says. “There was a very artistic milieu in Melbourne that nobody knew about.” John and Sunday Reed, arts patrons who founded the Heidi Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen, a focal point for Melbourne’s art community, were great family friends whom the Moras would visit often. “Once the friendship with John and Sunday Reed became established, every weekend we’d go out there for afternoon tea,” William says.

Reed. You couldn’t talk about Sidney Nolan because she would cry. I would cry. Everybody would cry. Because of great love affairs.”

T

he Mora boys may not have quite realised at the time that they were there for some notable moments in Melbourne’s cultural history. “We were aware that we were growing up in a very artistic family, not only in the arts but in food,” William says. “My father, Georges, was one of the pioneers of the restaurant industry here in Melbourne in the ’50s. He had the first restaurant licence in 1956 and ran Café Balzac, in East Melbourne. Charles Blackman was the cook. The big break was the Olympics in 1956 – the restaurant was packed out every night. “At school I used to crave things like a peanut butter or Vegemite sandwich, because we had all this exotic food at home. My school was opposite the Balzac so I used to go to the restaurant every day for lunch. Chocolate mousse every day.” Raising three boys didn’t get in the way of Mirka’s work. “I always had a baby in one arm and a brush in the other,” she says. “So now when I paint I’m losing my balance because I haven’t got a baby in my arm. “They were very lucky because at a very tender age they had a brush in their hand. They did a lot of drawings and paintings. And we had fabulous friends. [Artist] John Perceval came to the house. It was a party. And John Perceval had a lot of daughters, and my children loved his daughters!” Philippe Mora shared some memories of Mirka. “She let me, as a young kid, burn lead in our fireplace at 9 Collins Street until it was molten so I could cast a little head I had made in plaster,” he writes from Los Angeles. “This was very exciting and dangerous – do

not try this at home. Oops! She encouraged me to do so. “She was always painting and drawing, and encouraging us to create as well. I remember a Movietone newsreel shot in 1955 about this Parisian family – us – painting and looking French. That was news in Melbourne then!” Tiriel Mora says his mother provided him with “a myriad of indelible memories, such is her personality”. “For an insight into her capacity for enlightened mischief you can’t go past the way she would start a food fight,” he says. “Most people just don’t expect to get hit in the side of the head with a handful of crème caramel or, god forbid, chocolate mousse. It was so Mirka.” I ask Mirka what becoming a mother meant to her. “I always thought my children were my teachers.” The boys spent their youth around painting. “I gave them a brush and they could paint themselves, on their own little canvas,” Mirka says. “When they were 15 or 16 I got a lot of criticism, and I’d always listen because a child always speaks the truth.” What did William, who has two grown-up children of his own, as well as a two-year-old daughter, learn about parenting from Mirka? “To be curious about life, to be open to new experiences, to new visual excitements, to enjoy reading, to enjoy expressing oneself using art materials,” he says. “Mirka’s way of keeping us busy was to give us B-grade paper and brushes and, of course, when her back was turned we’d always steal her high-quality brushes and paint. “I remember one of the rare times seeing Mirka really angry was when she’d find one of her beautiful brushes with dried paint on it. ‘Who’s been using my brush? Who’s been taking my watercolor paint?’ “Years ago in an interview Mirka was asked what her advice to young artists would be, and she said to make sure very early in your career you give birth to your own art dealer.” Mirka has eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She says raising boys suited her. “I wouldn’t like to have a daughter, I would be jealous. I like to be the only one. So with three boys I was purring. They were very good sons. I taught them all my bad habits. Drinking wine, drinking Champagne, having big parties, dancing all night. I should have had another three sons, I forgot. I was absent-minded.” And it’s perhaps appropriate that the last word comes from the eldest. “In retrospect she was, of course, an incredible mother encouraging the creative part of the brain,” says Philippe. “We always got pure love from mum and dad. As a kid it was often confusing to have a bohemian mum. Kids want to conform, and Mirka was a shockwave in Melbourne. If she was going to pick me up from school I would tell her in a letter to wear the grey dress, white shirt, etc. She still has that letter.” \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au we welcome your feedback @

(AlAin EvrArd)

The Travel Book: A Journey Through Every Country In The World By Lonely Planet » $49.99 (Lonely Planet)

n 1972 British couple Maureen and Tony Wheeler spent six months travelling across Asia to Australia. Subsequent requests from friends for travel tips, and a growing realisation that there was a gap in the travel publishing market, prompted the Wheelers to write their own guidebook. In a recent interview with Enterprise Nation, Tony Wheeler explained that their 1973 title, Across Asia on the Cheap, “aimed it at young backpackers and covered territory that there hadn’t been guidebooks available on before”, adding that “the first book was a one-off. It was a fun thing to do”. The Lonely Planet business was born and over the next three decades the Wheelers and their colleagues built it into one of the world’s most successful book publishers. In 2007 BBC Worldwide acquired 75 per cent of the Lonely Planet group for about £88 million, with the Wheelers later selling BBC their remaining 25 per cent for a further £42 million. In its 40 years Lonely Planet, which was bought this year by US billionaire Brad Kelley’s NC2 Media, has printed more than 100 million books. Currently it has 500 up-to-date travel guides covering 195 countries in the marketplace. LP also produces some beautiful hardback pictorial books, including its highly popular The Travel Book which, as it reflects in this year’s edition, “offers a glimpse of each country’s perks and quirks: where to go, what to see, how to eat it up and drink it in, and ways to immerse yourself in the life and the land”. For armchair travellers, or children and teenagers who want to learn more about the world, or anyone who is planning a trip but is still unsure where to go, this is the Christmas gift for you. The book follows an A-Z format, starting with Afghanistan and ending with Zimbabwe. Each country receives a double-page

spread, and in this space designers have included colour photos, a little map, a one-paragraph overview, then subheadings such as “best time to visit”, “top things to see”, “top things to do” and the like. It is a simple but brilliant formula and shows the talents of LP’s editors in taking a raft of information and repackaging it in an easy-to-read and visually enticing format. The photographs play a vital role in telling each country’s story. As the editors explain in their introduction, “photos are paramount in capturing and sharing the spirit of a place and its people, and images

in this book have been chosen to weave stories of their own. Clichéd icons and picture-postcard views have been avoided in favour of photos that tell of life in its myriad forms – at work, at play, at worship, laughing, singing, relaxing, dancing or just surviving – in order to bring you countries, not brochures.” While it continues to produce quality publications such as The Travel Book, Lonely Planet’s brand will remain strong and viable, regardless of ownership. Happy 40th birthday. \ cperkin@theweeklyreview.com.au

Patrick Leigh Fermor: An Adventure By Artemis Cooper » $24.99 (John Murray)

An Englishman Aboard: Discovering France in a Rowing Boat By Charles Timoney » $35 (Penguin)

Golf Courses: Fairways of the World Photographed by David Cannon » $32.95 (Rizzoli)

On The Trail of Genghis Khan By Tim Cope » $29.99 (Bloomsbury)

Considered one of the world’s great travel writers, Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor (known as Paddy), who died in 2011, was once described by a BBC journalist as “a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene”. In her thorough and engaging biography, Artemis Cooper delves deep into the soul of a born adventurer who, at 18, decided to walk across Europe and went on to become a World War II hero, a lifelong traveller and respected author. Now in paperback, Cooper’s book received many accolades when it was first published in hardback last year. \

It started as a bet made one New Year’s Eve. While showing French friends his new building project – a seven-foot rowing boat housed in his garage – British expat Charles Timoney accepted their midnight challenge to row the nearly 800-kilometre journey of the Seine River, from its source to the sea. Timoney, who moved to France 25 years ago after he and his French wife were both retrenched from their British jobs, sets himself a task: “A quest to discover France”. He achieves his objective, wins the bet, and gives us a charming little travel book that takes readers on a different kind of journey. \

“One of the great things about golf is that wherever you go, no two courses are the same,” writes South African golf champion Ernie Els in this little hardcover’s foreword. Many golfers will agree, particularly those with a keen curiosity about the world’s courses and a desire to travel beyond their own familiar 18-hole track. This book, now in a smaller, more affordable format, features a range of beautiful fairway images. From the stunning views of the 16th at Cypress Point in California to the par five seventh hole at the K Club’s Palmer Course in Ireland, Cannon captures the brilliance of great golf course design. \

One of the more interesting books in the current “Top 50 Books You Can’t Put Down” campaign, On The Trail of Genghis Khan will prove a hit with (we suspect mostly male) readers who love a Boy’s Own kind of adventure story, exotic locations, an easy writing style, and who, like the author, hold dreams of one day embarking on a bold journey. In 2004, Victorian-based Cope set out on a three-year 10,000-kilometre trek from Mongolia to Hungary on horseback. His new book recalls the highs and lows of tough travel. \

never an ideal sight when you are trying to get a hit of nature on your weekend, but it presents the opportunity to continue to Wombelano Falls via Captains Creek Road, which is worth the extra three-kilometre round trip. Masons Falls and the surrounding tracks total 13 kilometres and the going ranges from easy to moderate. Again, the main picnic ground is well set out with toilets and drinkable water. The scenery here is much of the same, but it’s worth grabbing a few lunch rolls from the Kinglake Bakery and hanging around the falls for a while. On both days and on all trails, we lacked a sense of being off the beaten track, however, that is probably a compliment to the park management as every trail is well signposted, well cleared and well worn. In total, we spent about 10 hours exploring what felt like flat and not-so-challenging terrain before making the one-hour drive back to our inner-city homes. Kinglake doesn’t have the wow factor that other, more distant Victorian mountain ranges have and maybe it is too close to the city to really consider it a hiking destination. But if you, along with hoards of other Melburnians, find yourself driving somewhere like the Dandenongs’ A Thousand Steps for a walk on the weekend, then I strongly encourage you to drive an extra few kilometres to Kinglake to get that little dose of outdoors and a good breath of real fresh air without the crowds. \ emorton@theweeklyreview.com.au

ngredients: start with a mass of idyllic natural settings, add several cellars of award-winning wine, a tonne of prime local produce, two buckets of high-profile chefs, a cup of unique events and a pinch of relaxation. Stir gently until it reaches perfect harmony. The result … 2012’s inaugural Margaret River Gourmet Escape. The only thing missing was the hangover cure. Located three hours south-west of Perth, Margaret River is already well known for its beautiful beaches, spectacular tall-tree forests, cave systems, surfing, excellent wines and fresh produce. Last year it added a world-class culinary extravaganza, which cemented the region as a must-see destination for foodies. The Gourmet Escape gained enormous international recognition as, one by one, the high-profile chefs who had been invited to the event gushed about the local produce, unique experiences and relaxed atmosphere. One highlight was the pop-up Gourmet Beach Barbecue feast held under enormous teepees. So too the Icon Dinner, which was held at Voyager Estate. Among the other events were: a Long Lunch at Fraser Gallop Estate; The Chefs’ Table, where guests got the chance to ask questions of key chefs; the Chefs’ Theatre; Wine Theatre; Kids’ Cooking Class; Test Kitchen; and wine tours. The Gourmet Village, set in the beautiful grounds of Leeuwin Estate, was the heart of the action, with demonstrations, interactive cooking classes, panel discussions, celebrity chefs, pop-up restaurants, and 100 premium exhibitors. That was year one. This year’s event, in November, promises to be even bigger. “We were delighted with the inaugural launch last year and can’t wait to develop an even bigger and more exciting program,” says event organiser Naomi Wilson. “We want to build on this and become the leading food and wine event in the Asia Pacific.” With such a successful beginning and more than 25 international, Australian and local food and wine celebrities already on board for this year, I’ve no doubt this will be achieved. Already confirmed are Heston Blumenthal, Rick Stein, Alex Atala, Sat Bains, Neil Perry and Adriano Zumbo. Blumenthal is already excited. “The Gourmet Escape is going to be quite unlike any other; you will be able to mix with winemakers, cheesemakers, chefs, producers; all kinds of people

20 The weekly review \ october 2, 2013

who are passionate about food and cooking,” Blumenthal says. Last year the tickets sold out quickly and, due to the overwhelming demand, the organisers have added some new events. I’ve blocked off November 22-24 and have my eye on the degustations, long lunches and exclusive dinners. My tips 1 Grab a ticket from Ticketek. They start from $38 for a general-entry day pass, with separate tickets required for the other events. 2 Think about using the event pick-up buses operating from Bunbury, Busselton, Yallingup, Dunsborough and Margaret River. 3 Extend your stay so you don’t have to jump on a plane straight away. This has two benefits: you can explore the region a bit more, and you won’t have to fly while still suffering the effects of the Escape’s bounty. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

It was under his uncle’s guidance in a little East End furniture shop in Petticoat Lane, where everything was near enough to handmade, that Samuel developed the skills to open his own business, which he did in London a few years later. Arriving in Melbourne in 1912, Samuel brought out his wife and children a year later and put his two eldest boys, then 13 and 14, to work in his home-based factory in North Melbourne. Five years later, a bigger factory was needed, so he moved to 467 Malvern Road, Prahran, and continued to make furniture as Berkowitz and Sons until after World War II. During the war, Lionel recalls furniture production ground almost to a halt. “I think only 10 per cent of their production was allowed to be furniture, the rest was boxes for aircraft and ammunitions,” samuel he says. “And I can remember as a small boy going to the factory and rows and fled the rows of coffins were in there; they were all anti-jewish berkowitz Archive for the war effort.” pogroms In 1948 they opened a shop in Collins Street monochrome sofas mimicking European trends. but, when rental costs soared, they kickstarted Like many successful family-run businesses, the exodus of furniture shops from the city out to this one was born from poverty. Consultant: Architect Shelley Penn. (SuPPlied)

elbourne architect Shelley Penn runs a solid 20-year-old practice focusing mainly on residential architecture, but her influence extends well beyond it. She recently completed a term as national president of the Australian Institute of Architects, and over the past 13 years has worked closely with government in advisory and strategic roles. In 2000 she was appointed design director in the office of the NSW Government Architect, which flowed into consultancy roles and a four-year stint from 2006 as associate Victorian Government Architect. She has been an urban design consultant for Linking Melbourne, which delivered EastLink, and is chair of the National Capital Authority, Canberra. This rich, diverse experience makes Penn well placed to tackle the big questions around architecture and urban design, including what makes good design and how deeply design is valued in Australia. “I think there’s still a pervasive tendency to perhaps not value design highly enough, a tendency to think of it as an added extra you can do without,” she says. “Actually, good design isn’t just about looking good, it’s about buildings that function well, that are sustainable, affordable. We still tend to undervalue that and think good design is a bonus or even an indulgence.” In a city where several high-rise developments are in the planning phase – see Fender Katsalidis’ Australia 108, due to begin construction next year, and set to be the tallest building in the southern hemisphere, or Elenberg Fraser’s Tower Melbourne – the issue of good design becomes particularly pertinent. Penn believes it can make or break community attitudes towards these often-controversial projects. “Requiring developments to be well designed is incredibly important. It’s not just about their height, for example, but whether they’re responding well to other buildings and the landscape. We’re facing development pressures at the moment, and I think one of the keys to helping to solve that is employing good design and making sure government demands it; that they don’t approve anything [that hasn’t been assessed] by someone who is qualified.” While design might be seen as an add-on in some quarters, Penn nevertheless believes that Melbourne has a culture of “design quality” that has existed for some time but which has become particularly evident to the wider community over the past 15 to 20 years. “You can see it in certain buildings like Federation Square and Southern Cross Station – big civic projects that people immediately start using in positive ways because they work well and they look good. You can also see it in lots of little buildings … I think design in Melbourne is strong partly because of discussion about the importance of it but also because of a rigour in processes that we undertake and the fact we take it seriously … [We’ve got] interesting little buildings like Monaco House by McBride Charles Ryan – it’s in a lane just behind the Melbourne Club; you just discover it. There are a lot of places like that. “It’s really important to distinguish taste from quality,” Penn told The Age’s the (melbourne) magazine late last year. On face value, this statement might suggest that she is dismissive of personal taste, but this is not so. It is simply that she believes there are qualitative elements in buildings and public spaces that can be objectively measured. “Everyone’s own taste is completely valid,” she says. “When Federation Square was first built a lot of people said [they hated it]. That response is perfectly fair enough … [But] taste doesn’t help you to distinguish whether something is good or not in terms of quality.

By that I mean: is the building or public space doing the things it needs to do? In the case of Federation Square, the questions would be: Does it function well? Does it respond to its surroundings? How does it connect to the river? Does it have good linkages that help support pathways? Can it stand up to the tough requirements that a public place requires? All of those things are part of quality.” Penn’s work includes a range of inner-Melbourne projects, all carefully considered designs that respond thoughtfully to site and context. Her current project is her own home, a house she says is modest but that will “hopefully be a good place to be”. A low-key statement, but one that tells us much about Penn’s ethos: a belief that at heart, design should enrich the human experience. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

mirka mora mural

Keith Haring (1958-1990), a pivotal player in new york’s art scene during the early 1980s, is considered one of the most significant artists of his generation. During a visit to Melbourne in 1984 he created the mural on the side of Collingwood Technical School. What a coup to be able to view this iconic artist’s work smack dab in the middle of Collingwood. This openly gay artist and campaigner for the acceptance of those with aIDS had a profound influence on local young artists. Some believe his visit helped encourage Melbourne’s vital street-art movement. This vibrant work (7.4 x 11.5 metres) with its yellow background and red, blue and green figures is pure Haring. \

Mirka Mora is a Melbourne treasure whose work has contributed significantly to the development of contemporary art in australia. This marriage of two icons, Mirka and Flinders Street Station, is a union whose fertile suggestions bring joy to everyone who views it. The mural is on the inside wall at the river end of the station next to Clocks restaurant. Commissioned in the early 1980s in keeping with the renewed interest in public art at the time, it’s a typical Mirka creation full of humour and opportunity for contemplation. The bold colours and recurring motifs – wide-eyed children, angels, dogs, cats, snakes and birds – deliver a visual feast that fills our hearts and teases our brains. \

Queen bee at eureka toWer The eureka Tower demands your attention; it’s the tallest building in the southern hemisphere. But if you lower your eyes you’ll discover the Queen Bee mural on one side. This sculptural mural of a Queen Bee and her colony gleaming off the side of the skyscraper is the perfect metaphor for a gigantic tower. architect nonda Katsalidis saw these original sculptures, created by richard Stringer in 2003-04, and sourced funding for a large-scale version while Stringer adapted it to the building. The bees are made from anodised aluminium sheet, using cast aluminium for all the antennae and small bees’ legs. The sheets are riveted together using 110,000 anodised rivets. \

house in South Yarra, Altschwager has been crafting contemporary lighting using South Australian limestone and reclaimed Australian hardwood. The lighting range includes pendant lights and freestanding lamps – all 100 per cent handmade. The Flash Light Pendant from Altschwager’s range was a winner in this year’s Vivid international design competition. “There is no manufacturing process involved with limestone or hardwood,” he says. “They are completely natural and beautiful in their natural state. Limestone is cut straight from the ground and then you just shape it. It’s not perfect – there’s character and blemishes and soft spots, and it’s the same with timber. The character marks make each piece unique.” Altschwager began to develop his lighting range after he built a hut on his family’s farm. “The hut is made out of salvaged materials and looks over the coast, and when it was finished I had to make some lights for it,” he says. “I had the idea of using limestone then. The stone is quite porous and has a textured surface, and it’s naturally creamy so it produces a very warm light. I don’t design lighting pieces that are intrusive, but when you look at each light it has a lot of interest and the dimensions and proportions are carefully balanced.” Altschwager uses a traditional wood lathe to mount the limestone and shape it. He says he enjoys using materials in a context people may not have seen before. “Sculptors use it, but limestone isn’t really used in design products. I don’t think the natural properties of the material have been exposed to their full potential yet,” he says.

“limestone isn’t really used in design products. I don’t think the natural properties of the material have been exposed to their full potential” The Inkster Maken name references Altschwager’s heritage. Inkster is his mother’s maiden name, and maken is a Danish word meaning “to make”. His parents are of Norwegian and Danish background, and his maternal grandfather was an architect with a keen appreciation for skilful design. “I think a lot of my creativity comes through mum’s side,” he says. “The next range, I will probably move away from limestone and I have a few ideas based on using animal fibres that I want to explore. “I want to make quality products that people don’t expect out of a material they have never considered for a particular use before.”

Altschwager is also on a mission to raise awareness of the importance of lighting in a space – whether a room in a home or in a public setting, such as a restaurant. “You can walk into a space that is badly lit or too bright and it makes or breaks the atmosphere. A lot of businesses don’t look inviting or comfortable or relaxed because of the way they are lit,” he says. “I think that increasingly people are looking to create the right atmosphere in their homes and gradually there is better awareness that lighting can help achieve that.” \ smarinos@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.inkstermaken.com
