Virginia trioli \ Plan Melbourne, if you can

R

iddle me this: if you stacked one on top of the other all the “plans for Melbourne” ever commissioned and ever written, would they actually reach all the way to the moon? Or would you need Grocon to come along and add a little Eureka Tower-like lightning rod to the top to fill in that last bit? It would only be a little jump, for as sure as governments will come and governments will go, each new wave will feel the need to commission their own plan to deal with a basic truth: that this city is going to keep growing and will need an ordered approach to development, service provision and infrastructure, and a sensible plan to fund it. Now we have a new one. Previously, we had another one. Melbourne 2030, meet Plan Melbourne. To paraphrase a certain prime minister, I have said here before that I was the best friend Melbourne 2030 ever had – not that I was ever in a position to take care of my dear friend. But unlike most of the then-government members who were actually charged with the task of defending its core principles and going out and advocating them, I was always happy to argue the case for a limit on urban expansion and an increase of urban infill that was quite evenly distributed throughout Melbourne. The focus on major transport hubs just seemed smart to me: with pre-existing infrastructure that would

easily handle improvement, and solid communities that could absorb more citizens, Melbourne 2030 not only envisaged a bigger city but a uniformly developed one. High-density was not just for the suburbs that had no political leverage to argue against it. The new Plan Melbourne on basic analysis seems to see the city a little differently. Integrated transport is good. So is identifying employment zones where pre-existing institutions can be better linked in with business. (The South East Melbourne Innovation Precinct, which is aligned with Monash University, is a good example of this). But in Plan Melbourne, urban renewal is the big thing. Areas such as Fishermans Bend and E-Gate and Arden-Macaulay have been earmarked for major population growth and the choices are smart – not too far out, close to services and amenities, even while the timeline for their much-needed transport options seems way too long. But the protective cordon thrown around the suburbs is short-sighted and cowardly. The plan states: “Achieving housing and population growth in defined locations will enable local governments to protect the majority of Melbourne’s existing suburbs from significant housing densification.” Unless of course the “densification” is in your local government area … This flies in the face of all the work and research and planning that has been done over decades looking

at sensible ways to deal with Melbourne’s growth. It also squanders the opportunities that exist for building non-ghetto communities within a solid suburban setting. There IS a way to embrace higher density living within the suburbs without ruining the reason people want to be there. The older, pre-existing small-scale developments throughout South Yarra, Toorak, Prahran, Armadale, Malvern and, yes, even Camberwell, demonstrate this: with decent height restrictions and mandated open space or green building requirements, such suburbs could absorb more residents with little impact. The infrastructure requirements of the new E-Gate-style developments are significantly more than would be required in pre-existing transport hubs such as Camberwell and Box Hill. And who plans for and funds the establishment of the libraries, schools, pools and recreation centres that will be needed sooner than everyone wants to believe? I know this can be achieved, but my heart sinks at the prospect of these important requirements falling victim to another change of heart, another version of our planned future: another dusty document stacked high and shooting for the moon. \

PETER WILMOTH meets Lorna Jane Clarkson, the name on everyone’s hips

I

t’s Saturday morning in a city hotel in Melbourne and Lorna Jane Clarkson is telling her story with all the enthusiasm, excitement and brio you might expect if you’ve read her books or her blogs, or even met her, which is not uncommon given the priority she gives to connecting with her customers and fans. When your name is on 160 stores around the world, you’re No. 26 on Business Review Weekly magazine’s top 30 richest self-made women, with an estimated wealth of $50 million, and you’re on the cusp of opening a range of new cafés, stores and wellness centres, you have every reason to be excited about life. And perhaps there’s another reason for her excitement. A few weeks after our interview, media reports emerge airing speculation that the Lorna Jane empire is on the market for a cool $500 million. Clarkson, who with her husband Bill owns 60 per cent of the business (the remaining 40 per cent is owned by a private equity firm), has refused to comment on the reports but, if true, she stands to walk away a very, very wealthy woman. Today as we talk over coffee in Collins Street, there’s no mention of multimillion-dollar business deals. In fact, she says the global empire she founded 24 years ago was never about the money. “This has been about following my dreams and doing what I love to do, and I’ve got all these amazing women all over the world who love what I do and love the active-living philosophy and want the same things in their lives,” she says. Clarkson’s passion for active living has been the motivating force, not just of her business but of her life since she moved, aged 11, to Brisbane from a small town in the north of England. “It really did change my life because in England you have a different way of living, all indoors,” she says. “What I really loved about Australia was that outdoor, being-active way of living. I can thank this really amazing Australian environment for getting me excited about moving my body.’’ In Brisbane she did ballet, played netball and was a cheerleader at school. “I’ve never been this great athlete and I think that’s what’s appealing about what I do,” she says. “It’s for everybody and you don’t have to be an amazing athlete and be gifted to move your body and enjoy it. I’m a high-energy person and exercise definitely has something to do with it. I’m just your everyday girl next door who likes to hike and feel great about myself, and part of that is moving. I think moving helps you think and be positive. It makes you feel like you’re alive because all your cells are regenerating.” At school she wanted to be a journalist but her mother thought that world was a bit tough. Instead she did dental therapy for the Queensland government and was posted to Cairns to work in schools. She stayed in Cairns for four years until age 24. “I did my first marathon there but not very well. It was hot. I couldn’t move for a week.” It was while studying dental therapy, that Clarkson began teaching aerobics at night. “I was really into that ’80s fitness, Olivia Newton-John, Jane Fonda – that whole fitness thing was really big for me,” she says. “I remember in year 12 getting my hair cut off like Olivia Newton-John in the Physical video, and my ballet teacher going ballistic because you’re supposed to have long hair.” All her friends were in fitness and she began to feel the constraints of working for the government. “I felt like I was turning into this person that wasn’t dreaming big enough any more,” she says. The boundless energy was always there. “The gym I was working at nominated me to be Miss Cairns and I won, for some reason,” she says. “When I got up to get my crown [a DJ] said, ‘Wow, have you been drinking?’ because I was so excited. I said, ‘No, this is a natural high, from exercise’, because I’ve never drunk.”

10 The weekly review \ MAY 28, 2014

Cover Story She needed the energy for all the work she took on. She was teaching 13 aerobics classes a week, before and after work. Just for herself, she started making activewear. “I got my favourite swimsuit, unpicked it, laid it out on some newspaper and made a leotard. I started wearing them to my classes and because you’re up there and teaching – and remember, classes were huge then, there were 50 or 60 people in front of you – after the class they’d say, ‘Where did you get your outfit, it’s amazing’. I said, ‘I made it’. ‘Will you make me one?’ And that’s how it went.”

S

he returned to Brisbane and soon there were hundreds of people in her classes. “It got to the stage where I was spending every waking moment making activewear. I remember waking up one day and having to go to work and thinking to myself, ‘I don’t want to go to work today’. I want to get up and make activewear. “I was talking to one of the guys who owned the fitness centre and he said, ‘Well, Lorna, if you want to do that we have room upstairs, and you can do some hours on reception if you need some extra money’.” That was 1989. She opened her first store in 1990, in Brisbane in an old building above a fitness centre. On the flight to Melbourne before our interview, she bumped into a man she knew, who reminded her of those early days in her first studio. “We were on the top floor and there were pigeons and they were pooping and the cockroaches were eating it, and when people used to jump around in the very corners of the room all the cockroach poo used to fall down. And that’s what he remembers about my first studio, that I would always be cleaning out the

ZEST FOR cockroach poo. “You forget these things. You forget things that don’t matter. It’s like when Bill and I sold our home and bought a big old building in the valley so we could have a warehouse, and we lived upstairs in this amazing apartment. People said, ‘Oh my God, you sold your beautiful home’, but at the time you’re following your dream, it doesn’t feel like you’re giving anything up. “All our friends were going on holidays, had beautiful cars and stuff, and we were still on our pushbikes, but you look back now and I feel we never missed out on anything, ever.” Any sacrifice certainly paid off. These days Lorna Jane counts 134 stores across Australia and 25 in California, as well as shops in South Africa, Britain, Canada and Dubai. There are stores planned for Texas and Arizona. I ask Clarkson if all this success has changed her. “You still want the same things in life and you still care about the same things. I don’t do anything different. I believe health’s important, family’s important, who you are at the end of the day and how you feel about yourself when you close your eyes at night are really important.’’ She’s keen to use her public profile and business

here’s been a lot of talk recently about parents behaving badly at their kids’ sports games. Screaming on the sidelines, having punch-ups and hissy fits when their kids’ teams don’t win. Apparently some grown-ups need to be told it’s not OK to yell abuse at small children or punch each other in front of them. In defence of all those parents across Melbourne who brave freezing cold weekend mornings to take their kids to sport, who have long ago cast aside the idea of a warm cuppa in bed with the papers on a Sunday so they can stand on a muddy oval and cheer on small people running around after a ball, I would like to say this: Good on you. Not all parents care if their kids win or lose. Some of us are just delighted to see them giving it a go, being brave enough to run around in the rain, enjoying their jumpy fit bodies while they can before running becomes painful. Most of us are thrilled to see just one goal. Just one. We take the time to learn all the other kids’ names so we can cheer them on, too. It is possible for parents to have hour-long discussions about fitness levels and how so-and-so’s skills have developed so much this season, but not for a second even imagine criticising any

of the kids, the other team, or the coach. He’s a parent, too; he gave up his Sunday as well. All around me on Sundays I see parents donating their time and energy to coach, organise, bring oranges and put up goals. Everyone’s smiling, even if it’s very early and they

were up late the night before and haven’t had coffee yet. We are also happy to clap the other side when they get a goal, as much as we are beyond pleased when we turn up to an away game to discover they, too, have a weekly sausage sizzle. Most of us are happy to car pool, to take it in turns to work out where the hell Gisborne is or Thomastown, or to stand around in the dark on a weeknight after a long day at work while the kids train. I’m doing it right now, working on the laptop in the car where it’s a bit warmer. Can’t see a thing, though. On match days, I don’t mind if one of mine is on the sidelines. One of them usually is. But I’m really thrilled when they come off with muddy knees, all fired up about the team song or because someone got a goal. We’re all learning stuff, too. My oldest that she doesn’t always get to be striker now she’s gone up an age group. After not winning a single game last year, she’s also learnt it is possible that, with experience and lots of training, eventually you might even win occasionally. Now it’s finally happening. And my youngest has learnt kicking a ball can feel just as good, if not better, than kicking her sister. I’ve learnt some stuff, too. After two seasons, I know I really should insist, no matter how hungry or tired everyone is, that soccer boots be extracted from feet and put in plastic bags before everyone gets in the car. I’ve also learnt that gumboots are extremely useful, even if they’re animal-print and kind of ugly, but dinner parties involving dancing the night before a match are not. \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.au

Food \ LEANNE TOLRA REVIEWS OSTERIA LA PASSIONE

I

’ve rarely seen a chef work the room like Carmine Costantini. He’s in the kitchen, he’s cruising tables, checking on diners and basking in their enjoyment. He prepares food at the front counter, plates dishes out the back, delivers meals to tables, observes wine choices and charms his customers, encouraging them to feel more like guests. The floor and kitchen staff at this rustic eatery are hardly tardy, so he’s not compensating for anyone. The passion element of Osteria La Passione is writ large on its chef and owner – and in his food. Respect for produce, and integrity of flavour, is delivered via a daily degustation menu: three courses, or six at dinner, an antipasto and pasta option mid-week and an express lunch menu. Don’t expect fancy; it’s about honest, bold flavours. And the skills of the chef. Sardines au gratin is dish one of our six-course banquet which, at $85 a head, sounds more costly than it felt when time came to pay. The sardines arrive with tails intact in a sepia-toned broth that delivers flavours of earth and sea. A light hand has tucked breadcrumbs, garlic and parsley under their shimmering scales, and they rest on a radicchio and rocket salad, wilted by the heat of the oven-baked fish. Bottarga, salt-cured roe, adds the golden “au gratin” element to the finish and a flourish of Sardinia. We have only a handful of places in Melbourne that have coined the term osteria. It’s the Italian version of a bistro: inexpensive, modestly furnished and homely. Here, it feels like the real deal transported to a quiet section of Bridge Road. Italian-born Costantini came to Melbourne nine years ago. He lists Caffé e Cucina, Tea Rooms of Yarck and, briefly, Stefano’s, on his résumé and has a framed selection of international culinary awards on his restaurant’s walls. His father’s butchers knives, lined up on a hessian background, take pride of place there too. Furnishings in the two-room restaurant are mostly timber, tables wear starched white cloths, and brick walls are exposed. A layer of emotion is added via mosaic floors, framed photographs and a mural in the outdoor amenities. Dish two comes from the chef’s garden: a broad bean, pea and artichoke soup. It’s spring bounty rendered winter comfort food. Costantini picks, cuts, cooks and vacuum seals his garden’s finest to bring them together in a protein-infused (beef and chicken) stock that becomes a mossy pool of textural contrast. He appears next at a meat slicer behind the front counter. Promptly, a waitress bears a plate of cured porcine cuts: from the belly there’s lipid, creamy pancetta. From the shoulder is a vivid, spiced salami; from the legs a wafer-thin slice of prosciutto and from the neck a nutty capocollo. The pigs are farmed on the chef’s property at Arthurs Creek and house cured. Course four is always pasta. Pale plates of gnocchi glide by. But the chef presents us with a tagliatella ragù and a beaming smile. He has no idea we are reviewing

his food, and when I ask later why our pasta was different, his answer is matter-of-fact: “I matched it to your wine.” We were drinking a Lana Il Nostro Gallo, from Pizzini Wines in the King Valley. The marriage of this savoury, earthy wine, predominantly sangiovese, blended with canaiolo and colorino and the chef’s intense, aged beef, pork and veal ragù was brilliant. I owe my colleague Ben Thomas a thank you for the referral to Osteria La Passione. It was on a list of places that allow BYO wines – BYO is welcome here on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. If he’s impressed by your choice, Costantini might just deliver you an extraordinary match. It was probably no coincidence either that our next course was a red-wine-friendly skewer of venison, wrapped in pancetta and chargrilled. The salt and fat of the cured meat added complexity to the fiercely

flavoured game meat, accompanied by balsamicvinegar-enhanced red onions, griddled polenta and farm-grown kale, dressed in a complex, buttery olive oil. I think that same dish landed at the other six-course tables in the room but I was too intent on savouring the flavour balance of my own meal to be certain. A dark cocoa bonet – a chocolate crème caramel from the Piedmont region – given richness and texture with amaretti biscuits, also went superbly with our final sips of wine. \ ltolra@theweeklyreview.com.au To read more reviews www.theweeklyreview.com.au/food » See Ben Thomas’ decanter column this week for more BYOs

Breakfast \ Teleman (moshi moshi) » telemanmusic.com

Before it became a genre proper, indie music was a refuge for nerdy kids resigned to never being Bono. It was sometimes quiet, often shambolic, frequently polite music for tasteful misfits. Those were good days. Since then, it’s somehow been co-opted by laddish, good-looking, chart-topping types, who want to be Bono while still keeping their street cred. British band Teleman, like Alt-J and Everything Everything before them, are bringing the brainy back to indie rock. Their debut LP Breakfast sounds something like early Pink Floyd mixed with Hot Chip, with lyrics by Belle and Sebastian. Its 10 tracks are playful, poppy and eclectic. Single Steam Train Girl is built on an electro bass beat, adds aggressive guitar, then opens up into a synth-led, blue-sky chorus ELO would envy. At its heart, however, this is old-school indie. Strip back the electro flourishes and vocoder choruses and this is geeky boys with guitars, singing about their misfortune with girls. Which is absolutely fine by me. \

We Care

ASRC WINTER APPEAL

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) protects and upholds the human rights, wellbeing and dignity of asylum seekers. We are the largest provider of aid, advocacy and health services for asylum seekers in Australia.

We need your help

Every year at the ASRC, the onset of winter reminds us of the additional challenges this season presents for asylum seekers. Their limited resources mean that acquiring the basics, such as sufficient food, warm clothing and bedding and a place to provide shelter form the elements is difficult. At the same time, many more are being added to the ranks of those not permitted to work, rendering them unable to provide for themselves. Winter brings the denial of basic rights into stark relief. Perhaps even more distressing than the lack of physical comfort is the perception that no-one cares. Here at the ASRC, we know that is not true.

Australians do care We consider ourselves so lucky to witness the very best of the Australian community; people contacting us to help out in whatever way they can, donating goods, time, money and seeking ways to help people whose need is so great.

Your donation will make a big difference Every $1 you donate enables us to provide $20 worth of services. We ask you to please donate to enable us to provide warmth, comfort, dignity, security and a measure of welcome for asylum seekers this winter.

Set across two continents during the reign of Charles II, this new British historical drama feels shackled by exposition as it struggles to brief the viewer on its large cast and 20 years of backstory. In Massachusetts, settlers defend themselves against displaced natives. In Oxfordshire, the daughter of a former rebel is drawn into a treasonous plot. As someone who wishes Game of Thrones came with a guide to its bearded men, I’m grateful for the signposting. Less forgivable is the clunky symbolism and character work. It’s a shame writer Peter Flannery falls into the trap of cod-Shakespearean speech, complete with all-too-clever wordplay. This jangles with the show’s gritty approach to costume freya mavor & drama – all mud, blood and handheld camera. Thankfully, in next week’s episode the jamie dornan dialogue settles down, letting the drama speak for itself. What the series does best is make a centuries-old conflict feel topical. It’s no stretch to imagine the tensions between the entitled few and the desperate masses being cribbed from today’s headlines. \

Under The Skin \ opens May 29, Rated MA15+, 105 min, exclusive to Cinema Nova » www.cinemanova.com.au Fans of Scarlett Johansson’s big-budget oeuvre might find themselves baffled by this hypnotic, low-budget Scottish sci-fi. Johansson plays a murderous alien who drives around in a white van, chatting up and abducting men from the kerb. Her reasons for doing so are never fully explained. Nonetheless, these repeated crimes seem to wear on her. We start to suspect humanity might just be contagious. This journey from monster to maiden is played out in simple, subtle steps with flashes of dry humour. We know she’s truly gone native when her fingers tap along to Deacon Blue. Johansson is superb, her brittle quality working well with a protagonist who is all surface and hidden darkness. Perhaps more importantly, she has a face worth watching. The camera hugs her cheekbones as she drives along darkened roads, looking for fresh meat. Her eyes are sometimes dead and vacant, sometimes alive with faked human warmth. It’s certainly hard to imagine the film working as well with a lesser-known actress. Part of the thrill is the extraterrestrial glamour of a Hollywood star on a low-budget set. Gloriously free of exposition, Under The Skin trusts the audience to assemble its pieces artfully, if not correctly. In tone and content, it echoes Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell To Earth, with a final act that exposes humans as more monstrous than any alien. Similarly, its most horrific scene has nothing to do with aliens, but instead an earthly disaster and an abandoned child. \

festival Samurai Cinema \ ACMI, until June 1 » acmi.net.au/film ACMI’s superb season of samurai films comes to a close this week, with a selection that links seminal Japanese works with the Western titles they inspired. In Kurosawa’s classic Rashomon, the discovery of a samurai’s body leads to an examination of truth, as his story is retold from four perspectives. Jim Jarmusch’s Ghost Dog transplants the code of the samurai to a modern-day New York but remains respectful to the genre’s key notions of honour and loyalty. Western Shane is less faithful in its updating of the form, but reveals the strong spiritual ties between ronin and a gunslinger. \

Special report

Meet the head of junior school

\ Cheryl Critchley talks to ruyton’s NICOLE GINNANE

N

Role model: Ruyton’s head of junior school, Nicole Ginnane. (mark chew)

icole Ginnane is the ideal role model for the young girls she hopes to inspire. The new Ruyton Girls’ School head of junior school chose to have children young, but also to work hard at her career. Married at 20, Ginnane, 43, had three children while studying and then entered teaching. Jade is now 23, Zachary 20, and Holly 18. “I liked the idea of being a young mum,” Ginnane says in her office that overlooks the school’s new science building, currently under construction. “There was a lot of love around my children because they were the first grandchildren in my family.” Ginanne grew up in a large Wollongong family. Her father Barry Waters, who worked in transport and logistics, is one of 13 children. Her mother, Leonie, was a seamstress and has a sister. Christmas was huge and Ginnane admired her many aunts. “I had strong women, who were professional, around me,” she says. “One of them was a superintendent at a prison. Three of them were nurses. They were really passionate … about what they did.” Education was also important. Ginnane attended her local primary and secondary schools in Wollongong. After finishing high school, where she met her husband Patrick, Ginnane studied arts at the University of Wollongong before completing her

diploma of education and later a degree in library and information management. She did this while raising young children and moving her family from Wollongong to Melbourne. “We visited … and we moved six weeks later,” Ginnane says. When Holly was three, Ginnane started as a teacher librarian at Wesley College. She stayed for two years before spending eight years at Toorak College, where she rose to deputy head of junior school. “I really love what I do and curriculum is a real area of passion for me,” Ginnane says. Her other passion is empowering girls to believe in themselves and be prepared for everything life offers and throws at them. In 2012 the family moved to Sydney, where Patrick worked in transport and logistics and Ginnane was head of junior school at MLC School in Sydney. They returned this year when Ginnane was appointed Ruyton’s head of junior school. A relatively small school with its Early Learning Centre, primary and secondary schools on the same campus, Ruyton focuses on educating individuals – which was part of the attraction for Ginnane. She hopes to enhance this with her experience. Now studying a masters in educational leadership, Ginnane has been impressed by Ruyton’s academic

rigour and strength of community. Teachers and students work in partnership, with all children extended and challenged equally, based on their interests and strengths. “I really like the focus on the individual,” Ginnane says. “Capturing the interests and the passions of the children is really critical.” A focus this year is the new grade 4 facility in the renovated South House building. The girls will have their own facility and a program to engage and prepare them for the middle years. “We think that these girls are ready for a change,” Ginnane says. “At Ruyton there is a strong commitment to educating the whole person and understanding the uniqueness of every girl, her gifts, her talents and also her potential for growth and development.” Above all, Ginnane wants to nurture and empower young women, which she experienced through role models at school and home. She believes girls need to learn that they can do anything but also that life is not always fair and they sometimes have to fight for it. “It is really important that young girls are prepared for that,” she says. “We really want them to be empowered and to go out into the world and make a difference but to understand that, because they’re women, there will be complexity.” \ ccritchley@theweeklyreview.com.au MAY 28, 2014 \ The weekly review 23

n true Melbourne style, this Hawthorn house has been designed to reveal little from the street of the largesse within the confines of its manicured, landscaped surrounds. Architects Pleysier Perkins have designed a family home that encompasses the characteristics that define Melbourne living – design that is discreet and unimposing while catering to the needs of a bustling, close-knit family and their love of sport. Or, for this particularly active family, a love of the game of soccer. Set on a sloping 980-square-metre block, the expansive five-bedroom house was designed to incorporate a series of terraces that extend beyond a central courtyard, the all-important specially designed soccer pitch, and swimming pool. With the house built in a C-shape, Pleysier Perkins focused on maximising the north-facing orientation, while at the same time allowing every internal zone to enjoy access to the beautiful outdoor aspects of the landscaped surrounds. The success of bringing the outdoors in can be seen in the main bedroom, which overlooks the private courtyard at the front of the house. The sunken living area at the back enjoys a view of the north-facing garden, while the open-plan kitchen and meals area offer “box seat” views of the soccer pitch and swimming pool that lies beyond. Built over three levels, the house has been designed in 24 The weekly review \ MAY 28, 2014

response to a site that is 49 metres deep, with a drop of more than six metres from front to back. The garage at the rear acts as a plinth of sorts, supporting one end of the house and the pool terrace. From the front, the house appears to be an unimposing figure and a seemingly single-level building. It is only on stepping into the double-height hall entry that the house’s size and the ensuing levels are revealed. As is common on sloping sites, building to a budget was tricky, though not impossible. Black Alucobond steel was used for cladding as a cost-effective yet aesthetically appealing measure. It also complements other, more expensive, materials that have been chosen – split-face bricks, concrete slabs and timber flooring. Passive solar design principles have been considered and applied throughout the house, allowing effective cooling and cross ventilation in the warmer months. Throughout, the extensive collaboration between the client, architects and builders resulted in a home that was not only built within budget, but is also a masterpiece of design to be enjoyed for generations to come. \ smacpherson@theweeklyreview.com.au get the look » P27

t is hard to get your mind around a handmade, 427-kilogram quartz crystal-laden hanging light. There is the cost, of course, not to mention thoughts of the grandeur of the home in which it is to hang. And certainly the level of artisan skill and design detailing comes to mind. But the most pervasive thought is of the courage of the designer himself; to consider the artist – in this case, 33-year-old Melburnian Christopher Boots – and the self-belief that has brought him, at a young age, to this daring space. He certainly looks the part, seated at his desk in the middle of a polished warehouse space in the creative backstreets of Fitzroy. Boots’ Ned Kelly-esque beard is offset with a street-slick black leather jacket and the disarming warmth of a quick grin. He has the aura of a person totally comfortable with his lot in life; if not impervious to the need for praise, then certainly aware of its fickle comfort. It’s easy to imagine that ease was birthed long back. He says he was a “reflective” child, obsessed by the forms of nature, and that strong affiliation planted the seed of interest in building a life around the beauty of the outside world. “Being an only child, I had a lot of time on my own and I was always collecting rocks and feathers and sticks,” he recalls. “At one point I was close to studying to become an arborist, or I could have been a farmer who grew olives and grapes. So I guess my work is based around that; in looking at crystalline structures and the way branch patterns occur in plants.” It is the last comment that provides some context to Boots’ striking works. And they are striking, these lights that are as much sculpture as sources of illumination.

in its context socially and its historical references as well.” Which brings us neatly back to that aforementioned 427-kilogram crystal behemoth. Now hanging in a house in Dubai, it is an awesome expression of the principles and beliefs that have carried Boots to where he is today; his infatuation with the mimicry of nature through sculpture, channelled via a medium that brings art into our lives. It’s a purity of intent captured in the spare lines of his collections (he has nine designs in circulation, with two collection releases of about six new designs a year). That love of a clear design message is just one of the things holding him back from experimentation with colour. “It probably sounds too cool but, while I love colour, I am a little bit reluctant to use it,” he says with a slightly sheepish smile, though he acknowledges recent custom works in neons. “It’s distracting to the eye, so I would rather focus on things like form and texture.” Judging by the Prometheus pendant – a round circle of luminescence – or the angular beauty of the Phasmida, Boots’ firm stance on aesthetics is clearly reaping a reward. It’s nearing lunchtime when we wrap up, and I can’t help but ask: how long can Melbourne hold on to such a talent? “There are so many possibilities, but let the child walk on its feet first,” he says, a reference to the sponsorship opportunities he has been offered overseas and the youth of the business (it has just celebrated its second birthday). “I love to travel but Melbourne is a great home base. You need to ask, what actually makes you happy and, at the end of the day, I’m happy here and that’s my guiding principal.” \ slewis@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.christopherboots.com

t started with an inner-city block, a patch of gravel and a sailcloth awning. By the time architect Melissa Bright had finished with the Abbotsford property, it included a pool, warm timber decks, strip gardens, a vegie patch, and a garage with a “Little Brick Studio” on top that is a getaway space for teenagers. The brick garage/studio is a nod to the suburb’s red-brick industrial history, but it incorporates a modern twist by using Austral Bricks’ Bowral Charolais Cream as a contrast to the surrounding colours. “Abbotsford has a brick industrial past and a lot of beautiful red-brick buildings in the area,” says Bright, director of MAKE architecture. “We wanted something that took on board that brick quality but we wanted to make our own contribution. “We wanted something contemporary and we liked the contrast of the white bricks against the red.” A high sloping roof creates a sense of space in the compact single-room studio, and the clever use of exterior “fins” around window areas provides views into the backyard but guards the privacy of neighbours.

read is the main theme print and paper and the way newspapers dominate in my life – without our lives, I relish the atmosphere of a building where it, I’m nothing. Like the daily events of our lives are recorded. There’s a having a bowl of bran for palpable buzz of cerebral cogs whirring – I’m sure I’ve breakfast, dread fuels my day seen steam coming out of journalist’s ears. And even and keeps me regular. It’s when the premises are no longer being used to produce part of the human condition; newspapers, the sniff of print and the task of delivering the world keeps spinning so meaningful sentences lingers. Such is the case with we’re bound to feel giddy and the Herald and Weekly Times Building; designed by slightly nauseous. American comedian Bill Hicks used architects HW & FB Tompkins and built in stages to say life was “only a ride” – until he died of cancer. As between 1921 and 1928, the five-floor building still a child, that’s exactly what I’d tell myself when the Big dominates the corner of Flinders and Exhibition streets. Dipper teetered on the summit of its rickety track The neoclassical façades with their giant Ionic or a ghoul leapt out in front of me on the Ghost pilasters, the rooftop neon signs and the twin Train. I screamed and clung to the rail until my radio towers communicate the influence and building knuckles were white and when it was all over impact of the print media in the first half began in 1921 of the 20th century. The building was the the first thing I did was throw up. I still go and ended through this process on first dates. But what home of The Herald, The Sun News-Pictorial, these amusement rides (and first dates) have the Herald Sun, The Sporting Globe, Home in 1928 taught me is that I can survive dread. Beautiful, Who’s Who and Victoria’s leading Like many of you, reading a newspaper is country newspaper, The Weekly Times. The the balm for my dread. Yes, I know, there are other steel radio tower is a remnant of radio station 3DB options and I agree newspapers can be full of useless broadcasts from the building. information and columns written by nothing-burgers In 2005 the building was transformed into 61 who want to sensationalise news and provoke boorish individual apartments inserted behind the imposing passions just to increase circulation. Nevertheless, façade, masterfully restoring the original elements to the newspaper is the first thing that greets us in the blend the old with the new. Personally, I’m grateful morning; along with our first mug of coffee, it’s what the large rectangular clock on the Flinders Street side we need to crank up our brains. The content can be of the building wasn’t removed; it’s a potent reminder stimulating, depressing, political or at times even that time passes, politics and styles change – only paranoid, but we’re reminded that we are mere pimples history remains. \ boomboom@rachelberger.com on the universe’s adolescent chin and there’s always someone worse off then we are. got an ironic iconic idea? email me

Designed in 1890 by Melbourne architect Nahum Barnet (1855-1931) for Alexander McKinley, publisher of Melbourne Punch, the Austral Building is best viewed from across the road to appreciate its ornate style. This was a creative hub; the fourth floor studios were occupied by noted artists such as photographer J.W. Lindt and painters John Mather, Charles E. Gordon-Frazer, Leslie Wilkie and Alexander Colquhoun. During the 1890s it was home to the Austral Salon, a pioneer Victorian club founded by a group of women journalists. The salon still exists, encouraging young artists through scholarships and hosting student performances. \

Argus Building \ corner of Elizabeth & La Trobe streets, city The Argus Building was the former headquarters of Melbourne’s Argus newspaper; a daily newspaper established in 1846 and closed in 1957. Built in 1924 to the design of Godfrey & Spowers, this building combines several interwar styles with Beaux-Arts, Chicagoesque and Moderne influences. For many years it remained unoccupied and derelict, revived occasionally as a film set and for arts events. In 2010 businessman and Melbourne Institute of Technology founder Shesh Ghale bought the site from La Trobe University. It is being transformed into a university campus under a $60 million redevelopment; MIT students will be moving in this year. \

Record ChamberS \ 479-481 Collins Street, city This building was designed by J. A. B. Koch and built by G. B. Leith for McCarron, Bird & Co – one of Melbourne’s largest 19th century publishing companies, which published a banking journal called The Record. The classical elements express the growing architectural exuberance of owners and architects during the boom period of the late 1880s and the importance of banking and insurance journals. The façade is arranged as four bays with the central two projecting slightly towards the street. Engaged columns and pilasters define each bay, with a caryatid terminus (half-female figure on a pedestal) replacing the central column on the second storey. \

RICHMOND \ 4 SHEEDY STREET Far from the beige zone, this six-year-old inner-city house near bustling Bridge Road sings with colour and design flair. The vendors, husband-and-wife architects, designed the house and its adjoining pair on the site of a house that burned down. Amazingly, it packs a family house and two outdoor living spaces onto just 165 square metres. Front and centre is the kitchen’s five-metre polished-concrete island bench, facing huge glass doors and the northern-aspect garden. Inside, colour is king. There is heavy-duty green carpet in the three bedrooms upstairs and zesty blue carpets sharing the basement rumpus room, plus glossy 2pac doors in plum, olive bathroom tiles, a red dining light fitting and, in the living room, asparagus-green cabinetry and detailing. The colours pop against neutral surfaces: polished concrete floors; stained cedar stairs and feature wall; and, adding to the eclectic streetscape, an exterior of rusted Corten panels. With space at a premium, ceiling-hung cube storage doubles as a room divider, a remote-controlled car-stacker inside the sliding gate creates parking for two cars, and the fitted study has a pull-down bed for guests. There is also a cellar, upstairs sundeck, hydronic slab heating and a water tank under recycled-timber decking. \ JACQUI HAMMERTON

When the architect charged with designing this house finished the project in the early 1990s, he loved the area so much he bought for his own family just up the road. With Wattle Park just a few hundred metres south, a pretty tree-lined street and an annual street party, it’s little wonder why. “Minimal” best describes the design of the double-storey rendered house. It has a bold outline but with curves to soften the look. The front door leads into the kitchen and meals area, which has been treated to recent renovations: Smeg appliances, white powder-coated cupboards and pearly Caesarstone benchtops. The living room is at the front of the house and has a fireplace, cathedral ceilings and sliding doors to a courtyard. There’s a bedroom and study on this level, and a spiral staircase leading to a loft bedroom. The dining room has concertina doors that combine with decking to create a huge indoor-outdoor space. There are more bedrooms downstairs, as well as a bathroom, cellar, laundry and a big family room that looks out to a covered spa. \ LEXI COTTEE

This immaculately presented Victorian offers up spacious period-inspired bedrooms, bright formal spaces and relaxing indoor and outdoor living areas. Its classic features include Baltic floorboards, ceiling roses and elaborate open fireplaces. The two north-facing rooms at the front feature all three and are found either side of the leadlight front door. One of these bedrooms has a built-in wardrobe while the larger features leadlight detail. The big formal living room with an open fireplace is opposite the dining room. Both are spaces that will surely inspire entertaining. Around the corner and adjacent to a central bathroom with skylight, the main bedroom has an en suite, walk-in wardrobe and a private courtyard. The kitchen has Corian benchtops, and the family and meals area is bright and relaxed. From here there is easy access to the laundry, powder room, a spacious outdoor entertainment area and the large salt-chlorinated pool. Further features include ducted heating, a workshop and a double garage. \ JULIAN HEALEY

TOORAK \ 1 Eldene Court

This quiet court, on the northern slopes of Toorak, was developed in the 1970s but already most of its original houses are gone, unable to provide the standards of luxury demanded today. This new, glamorous, hard-edged house (architect: Jeff Porter) supplies these qualities and more besides.

The challenge of the polygonal site (not one right angle) is met by planning bedrooms and service areas conventionally but letting the wide central living area reflect the site-shape. This is a welcome change from the rectilinear interiors of most contemporary houses and provides a generous central, north-facing courtyard and pool. Entry is close to the street, into a wide hall flanked by a double garage

Originally the home of timber merchants, this magnificent Spanish Mission residence is set amid 1494 square metres of storybook gardens. Surrounding trees intertwine to create a verdant vista from every window. The house has large airy rooms with timber floors. The open-plan sitting and dining rooms feature lavish decorative ceilings, arched windows and chandeliers. Off the dining room is a magical sunroom with enormous arched windows that frame the picturesque surrounds. Here, doors reveal a circular patio that leads down to the tiered gardens. Back inside, a large hearth serves as the centrepiece for the family room. Nearby, the kitchen has a skylight and Caesarstone benchtops, and the substantial meals space also opens to the wrap-around patio that has a fire pit. Three bedrooms, a retreat and home office share two modern grey-tiled bathrooms. Upstairs is solely the parents’ domain, where the large main bedroom has a balcony and enormous arched windows that give the room a treetop feel. \ MICHELLE OSTROW ZUKERMAN

This elegant house in upmarket Camberwell has been renovated with restraint. Upon entry, leadlight windows, ornate ceilings, open fireplaces and classically appealing cream-coloured walls in the front formal living and adjoining dining room make an understated impression. However, the showpiece is a resort-style swimming pool and spa that provide a shimmering aqua backdrop to the rear open-plan kitchen and family room. The immense main living area, with glossy floorboards, opens to a poolside deck and outdoor dining space via bifold doors. The pool electronically self-cleans with the flick of a button, leaving more time for pleasure and less time spent sweeping and scrubbing. One of the house’s five bedrooms also has a pool and back garden vista, as well as access to the deck, making it ideal for guest accommodation. The main bedroom, which has leadlight windows taking in a view of the lush front garden, has been enhanced by a new en suite. Fresh paint throughout puts the polish on this immaculate inter-war family house. \ EMILY POWER

This three-level house has everything a modern family could want in the Balwyn High School zone. First off the secluded entry is a bedroom or study with access to the Japanese-style front garden. Nearby, Italian-tiled floors lead past a sumptuous bathroom. The raised dining space has walnut floors and a wallpapered feature wall. The family hub has uninterrupted views over Gordon Barnard Reserve. Here, the kitchen has speckled granite benchtops, European appliances and a cellar. The lounge room opens through concertina doors to a terrace with a built-in barbecue. Upstairs, the main bedroom has brilliant parkland views from a large balcony. The walk-in wardrobe is opposite the black-tiled en suite with unique basins and a double walk-in shower. Two bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a bathroom with a ceramic pod-style bath. On the ground level is a sound-proof games room with a fitted bar. The manicured garden has a water feature, deck, a separate studio with an en suite, and gates to the park. \ MICHELLE OSTROW ZUKERMAN

Timeless design is a signature of architect Wayne Gillespie, embodied in this rendered, solid-brick property. Full of light, from the front portico with a translucent roof to walls of glass throughout, the clean lines of a forward-thinking designer are apparent. Built in about 1995, skylights are in abundance but the cleverest natural lighting is over the staircase void. The second level is not cut off by a ceiling. Instead the upper wall is open and angled to capture the setting sun’s rays over the lower staircase. Skylights from the sleeping quarters upstairs rain sunlight downward. The main bedroom has a walk-through wardrobe to an en suite with double vanity and a balcony; the other bedrooms share a travertine-floor bathroom. Straight and austere from the front, the house has fun inside where formal rooms look through french doors to a playful water feature, a solar-heated pool and side courtyard. Original finishes such as white marble with black veins, used in the kitchen, bathrooms and fireplaces, have endured, like the original design. \ SUE HEWITT
