I imagine getting the hell out of this winter for a bit and taking a holiday somewhere warm and blue might help as well. It’s fascinating how much more we understand the importance of light for our health. Leaving aside the complexity of the mixed messages about the need for direct sun (something I ranted on here a few weeks ago) we now have a much more sophisticated understanding of the role that morning light exposure plays in our development of melatonin, serotonin and cortisol and the effect this has on our ability to sleep, regulate our moods, control our weight and our stress levels. I know as the days get a little longer and the prunus starts to bud and burst my mood will lift a little, too, but I’ve decided I can’t wait that long. I’m on the net comparing cheap Pacific Island flights and buying bathers online. It’s for my mental health, you know. \

Decanter \ Ben Thomas has a soft spot for merlot

(istock \ thinkstock)

D

o you know what the wine varieties mamaia, carmine, evmolpia and ederena have in common? They’re actually different names from around the world for the same grape: merlot. Sorry for the trick question but it helps to illustrate just how far and wide merlot is grown and enjoyed. It’s one of the world’s most widely planted grapes – from the Ukraine to Uruguay, and Israel to France, where it’s the country’s single-most planted grape. It’s believed merlot gets its name from the blackbirds that are so fond of its ripe grapes in south-west France. These birds are known as merlau in the ancient Occitan language. More often than not, this fleshy, easy drinking red is blended with cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, rather than made into single varietal wine. Its juicy plum, blackberry and herbal flavours help give the cabernets a sweet mid-palate (think of it as the jam in the middle of a doughnut on your tongue) and soften the austerity of cabernet’s firm tannins. There’s a lot of merlot planted in Australia – it’s third behind shiraz and cabernet sauvignon – and it is used widely as a blender. Indeed, I reckon the ratio of cabernet-merlot bottles to straight merlot I open would be about five to one. The best merlot examples are considered to be from the right bank of Bordeaux’s Gironde River. In the past decade or so, it has played a larger role in the blends of Bordeaux’s left bank as producers seek to create softer, earlier drinking wines. While it’s become more important in Bordeaux, the opposite could be said for the grape in California. The decline has a lot to do with the 2004 film Sideways and its lead character Miles Raymond, who

uttered: “If anyone orders merlot I’m leaving. I’m not drinking any effing merlot.” California winemaker Randy Ullom says the comments were justified. “People started planting it everywhere,” says Ullom, who has made wines for Kendall-Jackson in California for more than 20 years. “When it took off, merlot was planted on the north and south coast and people said, ‘Oh my God, we’ve got to get on this bandwagon,’ so they started planting it everywhere. You’d get a herbaceousness from the central valleys [that had a detrimental effect on the wines]. “At the beginning, if you were to put all California’s merlot grapes together to make a single wine out of it, it would have been pretty good. Soon after [if you did the same thing] it would have been good, then so-so, then bad, then to, ‘Oh my God, we’ve bastardised the whole thing’. “Between the overplanting and the silly movie that came out, merlot really crashed and burned.” But Ullom says there have been long-term benefits and merlot again stands tall next to California’s best-known grapes; pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and zinfandel. “All the low-quality vineyards were ripped out because nobody wanted them. It was a natural selection thing, where only the fittest and best have survived,” he says. “But merlot’s coming back now. If you put everybody’s merlot into a big pot now and made a wine, you’d have a pretty nice wine.” \ bthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au Online only »

Food \ LEANNE TOLRA REVIEWS THE NOBLE EXPERIMENT

I

’m saving the most embarrassing titbits of the night until last. But don’t cheat and skip ahead or you’ll miss the crispy pig’s head, the flashy flambé cocktails and The Noble Experiment’s mysterious basement bar. I got you with the crispy pig’s head, didn’t I? Good. It’s a ripper. Cameron Bell (ex Botanical, Tom Aikens, London and The Carlton Hotel) says he’s making plenty of them. At risk of spoiling the surprise – though the $3 price tag is a clue – it’s not a whole head. Bell does use that part of the beast to create his dense, earthy textured almost-croquette. Almost, because only a small amount of potato is used to bind the plump, jalapeno mousse-topped parcels. He removes the face, grinds it, cooks it sous vide, separates meat from fat and serves each bundle of protein in a light breadcrumb coat with a house-made sour cream. The heat of the chilli, the velvety meat and the balancing coolness of the dairy product make this a well-spent few bucks. A cocktail in hand is recommended while scoffing these beauties. I’d advocate the “light at the end of the tunnel” – foamy with fresh apple juice, a punch of whisky, absinthe, lemon juice and ginger ale – but confess to envy as I watched the bitters set alight atop a scorched amaretto and fig sour. The Noble Experiment has been named after the prohibition of the 1920s in the US, labelled a “social and economic experiment, noble in motive” by US President Herbert Hoover. Exposed bricks, unpolished timbers, leather banquettes, pressed-metal ceiling panels, bar stools and retro light fittings suggest a drinking house of the era. The look is helped by bookshelf wallpaper, shadowy lighting and sombre furnishings. Venue owners Daniel and Kristin Lemura have backgrounds as bartenders and venue managers around Melbourne. Their first business in the heritage-listed former Comarty’s building, which has been a grocery and a tea merchant’s, was New York-inspired bar Agent 284. It ran for two years then, following a revamp, the three-storey space reopened in May to include an upstairs cocktail bar with fabulous Chesterfield couches, a 120-seater downstairs bar they’ve labelled The Underground Experiment and the US-inspired street-level dining area. There are proteins aplenty on the menu – from the Noble Feasts that must be booked in advance: pork shoulder for seven to 10 people; whole brisket for five to seven; and saltbush lamb for two to three – to the shared dishes such as crispy pig’s ears, wagyu hanger tartare and pork cheek with white miso. If the aforementioned pig’s head or the 12-hour lamb-shoulder (which doesn’t have to be pre-ordered) are indicative of Bell’s affinity for meat, it’s no wonder. The lip-smacking lamb shoulder and cubes of creamy russet potato rest in a sticky savoury jus dressed with a caramelised garlic and chilli mince and a beret of oven-baked mozzarella. “I just knew there was more for me out there,” she says of nursing. “I thought, ‘I don’t have the strength of will to do this’. It made me sad being with sick people. I was caring but it was too emotional for me.” She found a position as a receptionist at a club called The Metro in Bourke Street. “When that opened it was very upmarket.” Some great artists played there including Roy Orbison and James Brown. It was there she crossed paths with legendary publicity pair Megan Tudor and Doris Tyler, who operated as Tudor Tyler. “When my time was up at the nightclub I thought I’d knock on their door and see if they’d be interested in giving me some work, and they were.” Casual work turned into a full-time job. “I’m proud to say they taught me my path,” she says. She worked for Tudor Tyler and then for four years in marketing and publicity for Garry Van Egmond, where she first worked solo on tours. He became another mentor, and she was now working in the big time, looking after clients such as Dire Straits, AC/ DC, the Riverdance show, The Highwaymen (country music legends Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson) and the phenomenally successful stage show Jesus Christ Superstar in 1992, starring John Farnham, Kate Ceberano, John Waters, Jon Stevens and Angry Anderson. She developed strong professional relationships with the artists she worked with. She has publicised five tours with AC/DC since 1991. “AC/DC are fantastic guys; down to earth, happy to work with you, professional, they take you in. When you go on tour with them you are part of their inner circle. Same as Dire Straits.”

did science but school wasn’t a passion. “I couldn’t grasp chemistry or physics,” she says. “I wasn’t very interested and didn’t really apply myself at school. So my focus was on having fun and going out and seeing live music.” A double bill of Skyhooks and Ol’ 55 was her first concert when she was at primary school. At 14, sporting pink hair, she saw The Police and the B52s. When she turned 18, every weekend she would go and see bands play the circuit – the Village Green in Mulgrave, the Doncaster Inn, Macy’s in South Yarra and the Jump Club in Collingwood. She’d see Mi-Sex, Dragon and the other great Aussie pub bands. Her favourite was INXS. After leaving school, primary teaching was an option but the idea didn’t thrill her. Instead she did a 12-month nursing aid certificate (“mum suggested that”) and worked at various hospitals for a few years.

fter dinner, O’Brien and Clooney went up to Heat nightclub, where the actor bought the whole nightclub drinks. O’Brien eventually went home and Clooney went out with a bunch of people to another nightclub. “There was an incident that night, a scuffle with a paparazzi. A camera was broken. It was my job working as the publicist for Planet Hollywood to keep George out of the paper until the day of our event. This incident was quite frightening because I thought it was going to hit the newspapers. It did, in a gossip section. Same day as it was on the front page – George doing a selfie with fans on the red carpet. I drove him to Moorabbin Airport and put him in a private jet and off he went to Port Douglas. He is someone who enjoys his success.” She also looked after comedian Billy Crystal when he brought his one-man autobiographical play 700 Sundays to Australia. “He was charming and very open

here I was with the sexiest man alive eating dinner at The Latin at Crown. It was a really fun night. He asked me all about my family and my life. “I’ve worked with lots of artists and it’s still exciting, but I don’t brag about it or tell people. But I was pretty happy on this night because sitting across on the other side of the restaurant was a friend and her husband out for their anniversary dinner. She didn’t know I was there and was having an argument with her husband about wearing jeans to the Latin. He said, ‘There’s a guy wearing jeans’. And she looked across and it was George Clooney and then she looked across and it was me. I thought that was hysterical.”

She has fond memories of The Highwaymen tour. “We were at the Sebel Townhouse, a legendary hotel for the music industry, and we were doing a live cross to Hey Hey It’s Saturday and I had Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash sitting in their chairs ready to go live. “I had Pam Barnes the producer with an earpiece in Melbourne going, ‘Where’s Willie?’ We had about 10 seconds to go live. I was still young and green. Someone sent me up to knock on his door. He opened his door and he appeared in a puff of smoke. Literally. He stood there looking cool, calm and collected. He was very happy, very charming. “They were all gentlemen. What I’ve found working in this business is that the artists in the country music genre are down to earth, charming, real gentleman. They were happy to do the media. They understand it’s business; there are tickets and records to sell.” In 1996, she opened up her own operation, Kerry O’Brien Publicity. Soon afterwards she worked with a client she has never forgotten. “George Clooney was the most fun,” she says. “He was coming out to film The Thin Red Line in Port Douglas and did a pit stop in Melbourne to do the PR for us (for a themed restaurant called Planet Hollywood). “I didn’t know what to expect so I’d hired security, organised a tarmac exit off the plane in case the paparazzi were there. He jumps off the plane on his own. I said, ‘Shall we go and get your luggage?’ He said, ‘I don’t have any luggage’. He just had a little backpack. He jumps in the car, sits in the front seat and says: ‘So, Kerry O’Brien, tell me about yourself. You’re Irish are you?’ And that was just my whole trip with him. So down to earth and interested in people. “I said, ‘I’ve booked Andrew [security], he’ll come with us. He said, ‘Lose Andrew, it’s just you and me’. So

to working with us to create a media profile around the show,” she says. “I flew over to LA with 60 Minutes to film a story. He was so relaxed and enjoyed it so much he invited us all to his home the next day to do some more filming. He played baseball with [60 Minutes reporter] Liam Bartlett.” Crystal was thrilled at the amount of coverage and interest in him in Melbourne and wanted to thank O’Brien and a small team. “He took a group of 20 of us on a boat cruise with French champagne, and then we all had dinner at the Flower Drum.” O’Brien has also worked with the Rolling Stones – “It was a highlight to stand to the side of the stage with 20 photographers and watch one of the greatest rock and roll bands in the world come on stage and feel proud and say, ‘Wow, I’m working with them’,” – and with Prince in 2003. The commonality of the superstars? “A work ethic. They are all incredibly hard workers.” She worked with Barry Humphries on his Eat, Pray, Laugh! farewell tour in 2012. “His work ethic was something to be admired. A lot of people his age are sitting rocking in a chair.” Paul Dainty was producing the show. “Paul set up a breakfast meeting for me to meet Barry. I was a bit nervous. It was Barry Humphries! He made me feel really at ease and we talked about media. He was very knowledgeable. He knows most of the journalists. He was a delight. And what a delight to work on a show where you’re a genuine fan of the artist.” O’Brien, who says she is “in her 40s”, is married to Kristian, a builder and carpenter. They have a son, Dylan, nine. “We’re three peas in a pod and love spending time together. I did my socialising years ago and I get my entertainment fix from the work that I do, and by Friday I’m all about family.” \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au JULY 23, 2014 \ The weekly review 11

eDWARDIAN WITH ÉLAN F or architecture and interior design practice Pleysier Perkins, this double-fronted Edwardian home in Middle Park presented the perfect opportunity for the designers to respond to a brief that was prescriptive in budget and site. Adhering to the designers’ overriding principles of simplicity and elegance throughout their work, this contemporary addition to the once-traditional home captures the firm’s design ethos perfectly. With a deft ability to inject a contemporary look and feel to this two-storey extension that sits comfortably with the original building, Pleysier Perkins has created a seamless blend of modern-day living with the old-world charm of the home’s exterior. The owners were looking to add onto the original home a master bedroom and a new kitchen, dining and living area. In adding a level to the back of the house, the master bedroom suite was designed to sit above the new kitchen and open-plan dining and living areas on the lower floor, effectively creating a parents’ retreat to the back of the home. A large steel pergola that cantilevers over the rear terrace to the back of the house has had deciduous ivy planted to grow over the structure to both soften the home at the back while providing sun protection in summer months once it grows. In both summer and autumn the leaves of the trailing vine create a beautiful, colourful contrast to the stark black and white colour palette of the exterior. The use of dark-stained oak in the kitchen cabinetry at one end of the open-plan living area is a sophisticated contrast against the pale oak timber cabinetry

A large property to one side of Hans House threatened to overshadow the new building, but Ong’s decision to focus on the southern position overcame this challenge, ensuring his building is bright and airy. “The living/dining area is where that neighbour’s garden is positioned instead, so we get a lot of light coming into that space and no overshadowing,” says Ong. “There are lots of glazed areas and the living/ dining area has glazed doors that slide back and connect seamlessly to the backyard. We also created steps and plinths along the edge – an active edge along that side of the home where you can sit and relax.” Ong’s client had moved frequently but Hans House was designed as a place for the family to settle for the long term, so attention to detail was important. “They love to be outside so we talked about how we can get the garden to be an active component of

the house,” says Ong. As well as a garden, there is a courtyard that connects elements of the house with a series of garden and city views from within the home. Hans House has a concrete base and ground level, while the upper two levels are contained in a timber-clad “pod” positioned above the base and angled to maximise natural light throughout the day. “Within the house there are shared areas on the ground floor and the private zones – the bathrooms and bedrooms – are in the timber pod,” says Ong. The ground floor has a living/dining area, kitchen, play area, lounge, guest bedroom and en suite and a powder room underneath the stairs. “You go up into a sanctuary and the first floor is split into two sides. One side looks into the garden and a beautiful old peppercorn tree. The other side has city views. All the bathrooms and slow spaces face the tree and the windows are located in a position where they frame the views. So you can lie in the bath and the bathroom window frames the tree,” he says. The first level of the pod includes two bedrooms and a bathroom. The next level has a master bedroom with en suite and a study. Integrating materials has been a clever aspect of Ong’s design. The concrete used for the ground level of the

house is introduced in the interior of the home in the island bench in the kitchen, interior walls and flooring, and in a seating area at the entrance. “There is a ritual about Hans House. You come in, sit down, take off your shoes and put your feet down on the concrete plinth at the entrance,” explains Ong. “When you step off that plinth onto the timber floor you know you’ve arrived home. Similarly, when you go upstairs to the pod, you step onto the concrete plinth and then onto the timber stairs, so you recognise that you are moving into another space in the home.” Thoughtful, subtle dashes of colour – a vibrant, fresh green – are scattered throughout the house. A reveal on the exterior is like a “wink” from the building, he says. “It’s a welcoming colour and is followed through on the timber baton screens in the bathroom and folds through to some of the lights.” The northern orientation of the main living areas means that for most of the year the spaces in the house

are bright and don’t require much artificial light. Solar eaves in the glazed areas ensure that, in summer, the glass is protected from heat and the amount of energy needed to power the air-conditioning system is reduced. In winter, the sun helps heat the home’s living areas. “Underneath the home is a concrete slab that sucks energy in and releases it into the rooms at night,” says Ong. “There is also a thick curtain that can be drawn across the living/dining area on a cold day, so you can easily close off that area so it heats up.” Ong, who studied architecture at the University of Melbourne, says his clients are thrilled with the feeling of spaciousness achieved on a relatively small block. “The family wanted a space that they could grow old in,” says Ong. “And the house feels big because it’s long, there’s lots of glass and space just spills over.” \ smarinos@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.mo-do.net

Constellation The title of this work pays homage to the stars that have guided vessels from one port to another – and, of course, the mariners who sailed them. Bruce Armstrong and Geoffrey Bartlett crafted Constellation (unveiled in 1997) from stainless steel, copper and cypress pine. The five carved-wood figureheads – a dragon, woman, bird, man and lion – recall a long history of figurehead carving from around the world. They also represent the diversity of the vessels that used the turning basin (a natural widening in the Yarra River enabling boats to turn around) near the corner of Queen and Flinders streets during the early years of settlement. \

Reed Vessel Virginia King’s mesmerising elevated vessel (2002) at Docklands appears to be suspended in the air, between time and place, land and sea. Exploring themes of migration, the river and the sea, the vessel is a symbol of distant horizons, spiritual journeys, life, hope and survival. Texts by Australian poets and writers are sandblasted onto the louvred sides of the cradle – metaphors relating to the river, memory, loss and the passage of time. The skeletal structure evokes a leaf or seedpod, a source of food and source of life. Water, a symbol of life and the spirit, flows from a reservoir beneath the vessel down the louvred panels to the reflection pool and is recycled. \

Time and Tide Akio Makigawa, born in Japan in 1948, immigrated to Perth in 1974 and moved to Melbourne in 1991. There’s a flow to Time and Tide (1994) – perhaps the influence of Makigawa’s experience as a sailmaker before studying sculpture. The elements of this huge bluestone, white marble, bronze and stainless-steel sculpture – extending almost 20 metres over its Town Hall Plaza site – represent a tree, symbolising growth, knowledge and the land; a flame, representing rebirth and transcendence; and a shell, symbolic of the ocean. Fibre optics embedded in the concrete emit light that creates a different mood, night and day. Makigawa died in 1999. \

What is truly remarkable is the way we translate this influence via our own individual histories to create something new – but derivative of another culture. Asian immigrants have played a vital role in got an shaping the Victoria Street precinct for more ironic iconic than three decades; the idea? gateway pays tribute to email me their contributions. The intention of the project (initiated by the City of Yarra and the Richmond Asian Business Association) was to focus on Vietnamese and Asian identity, culture and tradition. To quote Gregory Burgess Architects, “the project involved an intense collaborative design process resulting in four main elements weaving a dynamic complementary sequence of images and stories”. The main gateway at the intersection “creates a formal threshold of welcome to the precinct, expressing hope, courage and transformation through the story of the ancient origins and recent migration history of Vietnamese Australians”. But there’s more! Multicoloured Vietnamese hats suspended randomly further into Victoria Street “symbolise protection, beauty and community gathering” – and they put a smile on your face. Artwork on the railway bridge has abstract bamboo forests inhabited by “Richmond Tigers”. Under the bridge, on brick abutments, you’ll find metal-etched images sourced from an ancient Vietnamese brass drum. Art, assimilation and difference on all fronts! \ boomboom@rachelberger.com

CAMBERWELL \ 13 Aisbett Avenue

C

all it a mansion, call it a resort – whatever you call it, this property raises the bar to a new level in Kew. Sure, Grange House will set you back about $8 million, but for that you will own a property that is without peer in these parts. Perhaps not so in Toorak, but here, in Kew, Grange House is a one-off. For starters, there is the land – 2653 square metres of prime real estate in Kew’s prestigious Sackville Ward. Locals know Grange Road as the street with the Kew Traffic School on the corner of Cotham Road. Generations of children have ridden their bikes, learnt the traffic rules and enjoyed picnics or birthdays there. If you are worried about noise from the traffic school, forget it. This block is huge, with the house set well back from the front fence. Tipped to have cost more than $1 million on its own, the landscaping includes a 25-metre lap pool and swimming pool, a stainless-steel outdoor kitchen and a sports area of a half-sized basketball court, tennis practice wall, chipping green. All this is set in manicured lawns hedged by mature trees and – fittingly– a hedge of laurus nobilis or bay trees, evergreens well on their way to their full 7½-metre height. Grange House is a handsome late Edwardian house with a broad grey-rendered façade that has contrasting black-painted fretwork and timber window frames. A tessellated-tiled verandah evokes a more gentle age, but beyond the black front door period meets contemporary in consummate style. The warmth of timber from the dark-stained wide timber floorboards and honey-toned built-in cabinetry complement predominantly white interiors. Off the transverse hall, at the far side of the building, the main bedroom suite would be at home in a luxury tropical resort. A room-sized walk-in wardrobe separates the bedroom from an equally luxurious en suite with freestanding bath, dual marble vanities and double shower. French doors open the bedroom to the verandah, lawn and swimming pool. Also off the hall are a guest bedroom with en suite and a gym, powder room, second bedroom with en suite and walk-in wardrobe and laundry. A massive extension of family room, meals /kitchen, a covered outdoor entertainment area, lounge and dining room, linked by a glass gallery to the kitchen, has almost doubled the house’s footprint. Floors throughout this new extension are honed travertine marble. With full-height glass doors opening to northern and southern sides, the meals and family area is bathed in light. In the kitchen the thickest slab of Italian marble tops a huge island bench. The timber cabinets beneath include three integrated drawer fridges – one for dairy, one for drinks and one for fruit and vegetables, plus a two-drawer upright fridge/freezer. A Lacanche oven and cooktop is the heart of this busy kitchen. A butler’s pantry is the size of many suburban kitchens. Just when you thought the room count was over, there’s the lounge and dining room, separated by a central open fireplace, off the glazed gallery. The original staircase, now painted white and carpeted in black and white tartan carpet, arrives at the first floor. This level is given over to three more bedrooms, two with their own studies. An en suite and another bathroom complete the picture of this house that has to be seen to be believed. \ MARIA HARRIS mharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

This bright and spacious renovated brick house is in a tree-lined street, minutes’ walk from some of Camberwell’s best cafés. The house is on a sloping block and spans two levels. The upper level showcases its period history with intricate ceiling roses, cornices and french windows. The main bedroom has split-system air-conditioning, a built-in wardrobe and views of the front garden, while three additional bedrooms sit either side of a modern central bathroom. Opposite, the formal lounge has large north-facing french windows and a toasty open fireplace. From here, bifold doors connect to a smaller dining room or study with views out over the rear courtyard and garden. The lower level is a modern affair with a second bathroom, laundry and single-car garage tucked in behind a spacious open-plan dining and living area. Here a gas fireplace provides heat while a large skylight injects light. The space extends to a natural sandstone terrace and courtyard via large bifold doors. \ JULIAN HEALEY

Set in the English Counties Estate, this block-fronted Victorian house has a family-friendly floorplan and a resort-like rear garden. Recent updates include charcoal-coloured carpet and white walls, modern touches that enhance the elegance of period features such as high ceilings and light fittings. The formal rooms are interconnected, divided only by a double-sided fireplace with timber mantels. Nearby is the main bedroom, with front garden vistas and built-in wardrobes. Original floorboards line the arched hallway, which leads to the remaining three bedrooms, all with built-in wardrobes. A period-style bathroom with a timber vanity completes the original part of the house. Introducing the extension is the country-style kitchen. The adjoining dining room is opposite the main bathroom. At the rear, the airy family room has double-height ceilings and an open fireplace. French doors reveal two sandstone dining areas. Palm trees surround the secluded pool. \ MICHELLE OSTROW ZUKERMAN

This remarkable house was built c1883 as the stables and coach house for its next-door Victorian mansion, Widford. It retains original elements, such as a gable barge across the upper façade, double-hung sash windows and a chunk of bluestone, originally the doorstep, marking the transition to the rear living area. In the pre-car era, Widford Mews probably accommodated several coaches, horses and staff; now it has three bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs, with sloping timber-lined ceilings. Downstairs there are two large living rooms, a contemporary kitchen, another bedroom and bathroom, a study and utility rooms. The Wiseman brothers, wealthy Flinders Lane rag-trade merchants and property owners after whom the street was named in 1924, couldn’t have imagined the family-friendly floor plan that came with a 2006 renovation that added modern comforts. The property has ample parking in the huge front garden and is near public transport, CityLink, parks, schools and Tooronga shopping centre. \ JACQUI HAMMERTON

Block-fronted Victorian houses are less common in the charming suburb of Canterbury than in some other parts of Melbourne, giving this neat and unassuming house an edge over its flashier neighbours. The picturesque double-fronted façade, detailed by lace ironwork and trimmed in Brunswick green, alludes to the original period features lovingly retained within. The traditional layout at the front of the house has not been tampered with and a contemporary makeover is an option, but not a necessity. Off the elegant central hallway are four spacious rooms, all with soaring, decorative ceilings. The formal sitting room – with an ornate fireplace, large windows and access to the verandah – that hugs the side of the house could become a grand, light-filled bedroom. The study and dining room also have ornate fireplaces. At the rear of the house, the tidy kitchen and meals area – which has a bay window and panelled in honey-toned wood – overlooks the established garden and a decked entertainment area. \ Emily Power

we love it In 1937, this glamorous townhouse was one of a pair of maisonettes commissioned by the prominent Brockhoff family, who were big in the biscuit business. Its unknown architect was obviously well-versed in the art deco style. The apsidal ends of the sitting room and the projecting stair hall (the latter bisected by a

strip of then-new glass bricks), portholes, steel window frames, balustrades and other details, recall that popular style. Over the years, modern Chinoiserie décor, so popular in the ’60s, added to the glamour of the interior. Later, imported marble fireplace surrounds were introduced. A decade ago this house received a massive but empathetic makeover. The ground floor
