y the time you read to the end of this column, the laptop on which it was written will have been hurled out the window. So you’d better duck. I’ve been told in no uncertain terms by those familiar with the field – those irritatingly self-certain types known as computer experts – that there’s not much point hanging on to it: why, it’s positively ancient! Surely I realise it’s time for an upgrade? Err, not really. This groovy little thing – light as a feather, world’s coolest brand – was only bought in 2010: that’s just four years ago! It’s so light I can hold it up with one finger. It’s beautifully designed and functions just as it should. Only problem is it’s slowing to a crawl and no matter how much stuff – documents, photos – I delete from the drive, the computer keeps telling me the disk is full and has no more room to even manage start up. But why? Why can’t it handle any more data or documents? Why is something so young behaving like someone so damn old? It’s all to do with memory, of course (as it will be with all of us one day, but that’s for another time). The poor thing just can’t retain any more detail and, I have to say, I understand how it feels. Up to a point.

It’s not like I’m asking it to remember massive downloads or large programs or files. My computers have always been glorified typewriters, only ever asked to write documents and do a little internet browsing. I’m amazed that something this sophisticated can’t handle a few years of that.

“why is something so young behaving like someone so damn old?” I could buy some more memory, but the experts seem to sneer at that: why not just get a new one? Well, I know how to answer that. Because in-built obsolescence makes me furious. Because the thought of simply tossing this extraordinary achievement in design, functionality and computer electronics on the scrapheap seems absolutely absurd. Because surely there’s a way to make things last even longer than the

marketers want you to believe? Maybe this kind of digital sophistication just reveals me as a closet hoarder; do I really need to keep all this stuff on my computer? What am I keeping it for? There are back-up drives and memory sticks – but why keep them as well? The other day I found a bunch of old floppy disks – and I mean those eight-inch ones: what the hell is on them and why were they kept? A friend I know has documented his children’s lives in all the formats that track their existence: Super 8, VHS, digital video, and has saved the data in all memory forms for editing the inevitable 21st birthday video. He gets the shakes at the thought of the day of reckoning when he has to bring together 10 irreconcilable formats. So, thank you God of Obsolescence and the cult worship of all things new. In a pathetic kind of way, I know I’m attempting to hold a last line of defence against a consumer juggernaut that overran another way of living a long time ago: it really is like being one of those World War II combatants still grimly defending a long-forgotten Pacific Island. I know the war is over: I just don’t want to believe it. \

there’s a certain momentum that might be happening. Last year I worked a small percentage of the 52 weeks but from an outside perspective it looks like I’ve been working quite a lot. It’s two years of work all coming out at the same time.” Her mother Debbie works in elderly care. “She looks after patients who don’t want to go into a home; she helps them out. It can be pretty demanding work,’’ Snook says. “She’s a very patient woman, very giving of her time and generous. It really suits her soul and personality, giving of herself.” Her father Ian lives in Perth and sells swimming pools. “It’s good. They want pools over there. Lots more money and lots of sun, so it’s a good place to be.” Did her father ever admit he was wrong about the perils of an acting career? “Oh yeah,” she laughs. “He’s eaten his words long ago. He said he saw a billboard for These Final Hours on the road and was very excited.” Snook is living out of a suitcase with “stuff in storage in Sydney”. Her plans are fluid. “I don’t know what September holds, but whatever September holds is where I’ll go next. “From the date The Secret River finishes I have no tether to anywhere, no accommodation anymore. It’s good. It’s my partner and I and our suitcases, so we’ll go wherever we want to go, which is kind of nice. It’s the time to do it, when you’re in your 20s. I’m sure there’s an expiry date on that kind of lifestyle.” She loves travelling. “That’s one of my favourite things. I’ve been a lot across the States, not just California but Louisiana, up the east coast, Texas, Utah, Canada, Mexico. I’d like to go to more south-east Asian countries.”

Picture \ julian kingma As a teenager, she wondered about a career in acting. “I didn’t really think I could do it as a job. I didn’t think [anyone] could do it as a job. It seemed something that people did as a hobby … until my dad said, ‘Do you want to do this as a hobby or a career?’. I was very indignant and said, ‘I want to do this as a career’. And my own pride made me say, ‘OK, I’ve got to do this now’.” Did her father give her the usual line about acting being 90 per cent unemployment? “Oh yeah, all the time,” she smiles. “If you’re going to go into acting or any of the creative arts in Australia, you’re taught to always have a plan B.” Snook’s plan B was to teach English. “Which I still might do. Depends on how things work out.” She was accepted into the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney and started there aged 18. She settled in well to what was a structured learning environment. “I think that kind of helped me in a way because I was used to being inside an institutionalised type of environment, being told that you have to be here at nine in the morning or else you don’t get to participate in the

hen Sarah Snook was a little girl in Adelaide, she set herself some pretty daunting standards. “When I graduated from primary to secondary school, they gave out silly awards. I got the Meryl Streep Drama Award, and I was very proud of that. I thought, ‘Maybe one day I’ll be her’. My mum said: ‘Well, Sarah, if you try hard enough you might’.” So the bar was pretty lofty from the get-go, even if she wasn’t overly familiar with the Oscar winner’s body of work. “I just knew her name was synonymous with greatness and thought, ‘Yeah, that’d be good’.” I’ve met Snook at a city hotel on her short break from filming the miniseries The Secret River in country Victoria (Lakes Entrance and Werribee Mansion in recent weeks). Set in convict settlement days and based on the Kate Grenville novel, the series co-stars Lachy Hulme and Tim Minchin and will screen on the ABC next year. With her red hair and alabaster complexion, Snook is an ethereal presence, an impression augmented by her quiet voice and understated manner. We have met to talk about her biggest role yet, in the new film Predestination, in which she stars with American actor Ethan Hawke and Australian Noah Taylor. The film, a sci-fi thriller about time travel, is based on a short story called All You Zombies written reportedly in one day by American sci-fi writer Robert A. Heinlein. Predestination was shot in Melbourne and premiered in July at the Melbourne International Film Festival. Snook’s character is a woman and a man, a role that required long and complex make-up application and prosthetics. “It was three hours every morning,” she says. “We did the chin and a slightly different nose, lowered my ears, which was weird.” She spent many of these hours talking to the make-up artists. “I bought The Count of Monte Cristo and Oscar Wilde short stories on tape – all these audio books – and I didn’t listen to a single one.” Working with actor, director and novelist Ethan Hawke was, she says, a great experience. “He’s a really energetic person with a personality that is generous and lends itself to being the centre of a really big project, and able to carry that project,” she says. “He understands about being the leading man. He has a really strong passion for storytelling, something I really hope to foster in my choices.” The film is getting Snook noticed internationally. Showbiz bible Variety trumpeted “an extraordinary breakout performance from Aussie newcomer Sarah Snook”. And on a film website she is described as “the next Nicole Kidman” (the red hair?). Snook, 26, grew up in Adelaide, the youngest of three sisters. “I was into acting, doing as kids do, making up plays when my parents had their friends over for dinner and making them sit through the after-dinner entertainment. We made up Red Riding Hood. I was eight or nine. I remember tipping an old wooden table up on its end and that became the tree that the wolf came up behind, and the wolf had feathers for a mask. Just being creative.” Her favourite film was the Disney animated version of Aladdin. “I really loved the genie. I loved Robin Williams’ voice. That inspired my imagination because I could dive into different worlds. Totally loved that. “I did watch a lot of Pretty Woman as a kid and I didn’t realise until I was an adult that things I was quoting from it weren’t really appropriate for a seven- or eight-year-old to be quoting. I didn’t know who (the character) was. I thought it was the Cinderella story – didn’t know what the twist was.” Snook’s parents separated when she was 11. “I was pretty young and I didn’t understand it, so you look back as an adult and have a different perspective on things,” she says. I ask if the challenges of the break-up have proven useful for the creative process in her acting. “Useful in the sense that you have to develop a strong sense of perspective, that one person’s perspective is not the same as another person’s,’’ she says.

“you’ve got to protect that little flame inside you that’s yours … ” class. For me that was not unusual,’’ she says. After graduating in 2008, Snook has had several television roles (All Saints, Packed to the Rafters and the ABC’s Redfern Now, series two). “Just little guest roles here and there, but I’m very lucky to be part of shows that are inherently Australian.” She starred in the ABC drama Sisters of War, for which she won the 2012 AACTA Award for best lead actress in a television drama. She also appeared in several films including the Australian drama Sleeping Beauty (2011) and the Australian romantic comedy Not Suitable for Children (2012). Now Snook’s visibility is set to rocket with several film releases at once. She appeared in the recently released and well-reviewed apocalyptic drama These Final Hours. “A friend coined my character as a creepy mermaid,” she says. “It’s pretty accurate. I play a reveller who’s at a party to end the world and decides to take it upon herself to give this nine-year-old girl, who she believes is her own child, the better end to the world than she would get if she were to live any longer.” There’s also the horror flick Jessabelle, set in America’s South, to be released this year, in which Snook plays a woman returning to her childhood home in Louisiana to recuperate from a horrific car accident. Does she get a sense that she is about to break out as a star? “I’m working a lot more than I have before,” she says. “This year I’ve spent more of the year working than not working and I haven’t done that before. I feel

S

nook hopes acting can be a passport to seeing more of the world. “The acting jobs kind of feed my travel bug.” Does she look at scripts and see where they’re set? “Yep.” (Big laugh). You read a script and it’s set in Ireland and you go, ‘I would love to go to Ireland; I’ll try really hard at this audition’.” Her current level of fame suits her, and she reflects on how being well-known could affect her craft. Is she recognised? “No. I like catching public transport, so… “That [fame] kind of terrifies me a bit, particularly if the idea is to be an actor and tell stories about real life or even imagined life. It kind of starts with people, and if you can’t interact with people then where do you begin from? If there’s a mask or a fame thing that stops other people talking to you as a normal person, [that’s a problem].” And there’s a sense of public ownership when fame hits. “You’ve got to protect that little flame inside you that’s yours and, if you don’t, you don’t have anything to give those special people in your life, if everyone has it.” What are her dreams? “More travel, more roles, more life, more love. Things that feed the soul.” Part of her research for roles is to go to the movies. “One of my favourite things to do when I’m shooting something is go and see a film at the cinema … when you see a film at the cinema you go, ‘Oh, that’s how much they’re seeing’. You get the perspective – that’s how you pull a story together, that’s how you bring in music, that’s how you edit.” Snook is at the start of what could be a stellar career. From horror to rom-com to historical pieces, even playing a man, she is crafting a reputation as a genre-hopper, which leads me to ask about the similarly versatile Meryl Streep, the actor she wanted to be when she was a little girl. “I think she’s great, very inspirational, particularly for female [actors], because she brings a lot of strength and, at the same time, vulnerabilities to her characters.” The little girl’s dream is gaining momentum. \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

how much he loved boiled eggs, he hadn’t had one for ages, and my youngest said, yeah dad but they’re not so good when you spit them all over the place while you’re speaking. A friend said she’d seen someone post a pic of themselves in a bikini, announcing how delighted she was that she’d just had an organic fake tan delivered to her home, but I actually find it hard to believe this one. Who would do this and be sane? Someone in Savers says, I’m looking for an old green and gold sports jacket. I’m going to get a “Team Australia” transfer for the back. A friend tells me he heard a woman on her phone at the airport say, love, I’ve left your father. We got as far as Toowoomba and I realised I was going to kill him. Maybe the caravan idea wasn’t such a good one. A lady in a buggy in the shopping centre stops to talk to some old ladies and says the government’s taken away her disability pension. When she leaves, one of the old dears says, well, it’s about time she got a job. While this is happening, a dad yells at his pre-school kid to “f---ing keep up”. I just love shopping at Northland. I can’t help but think about all these people and how they’re doing. The lady with the never-ending wine cask, the foo-lover, the couple whose fantasy trip around Australia was thwarted possibly by divorce. But mostly I think of the little boy who will hopefully one day choose not to keep up at all, but go his own way. \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.au We welcome your feedback @ www.theweeklyreview.com.au/ myview

esterday, when I was having lunch at a noodle place, a lady came in and asked for a bowl of the lovely soup she thought might be called “foo”. Today, while at the hairdresser, a nonna said, “No, no cut today, just a blow-job”. Then my beloved was on a Qantas flight and the man next to him told the hostess someone left their iPad behind. She said, thank you, but they are actually in-flight TV screens, everyone has one. The man said, so do we get to take them home with us? I’m having a good week for all the random, absurd, funny stuff I’ve overheard. In the bottle shop, a lady went for a bottle of red wine and her partner said, no, don’t buy that, if you do you’ll just drink all of it and then you’re just stupid. So she picked up a two-litre cask instead. A dude was telling a friend on the tram that even though his father was a Sikh and it is kind of a religion for him to wear his hair in a bun, he no longer wants to because everyone thinks he’s a hipster. At a café, a kid asks for a hot chocolate without the froth and when it comes she looks disappointed and the waitress says, do you want me to unfroth it a bit more, and the kid says, yes and can I have another marshmallow while you’re there? I hear this fight coming from a house while I’m out walking. Someone says, Dad, give me some money, just $30 so I can take my kids out. The reply is, maybe you should have thought of this earlier in the week when you bought that ute. At my kitchen table, the other adult said

(Darrian Traynor)

astuso, as I’m sure you know, is the Spanish name for a marmalade-loving bear called Paddington who lands in London from “darkest Peru”. It’s also the name of a new restaurant by the crew behind San Telmo, the Argentine eatery renowned for its grilled meats and cheese. Being a big fan of San Telmo I have high hopes for Pastuso, which has a similar upbeat mood but is set in Peru. There’s a pronounced Peruvian accent to its menus (with constant references to Peruvian ingredients or preparations) and a Peruvian chef, Alejandro Saravia, at the helm. Despite – or maybe because of – those high expectations, my first visit doesn’t go so well. We’re seated promptly enough, but in the neon-bright, poster-lined, more casual section by the open kitchen, where the chefs are in your face. We ask to move down the back where it’s darker and there’s no live theatre. Much cosier. We have a table for two but there’s also a communal high table, a substantial bar and a rear room of intimate tables flanked by walls of wooden wine crates. Very atmospheric, as are the tall candles burning like oversized church tapers at the bar, and the brick-and-bluestone laneway views through screen-sized windows. It is more or less a full house but there are not enough waiters to go around and, of those present, some don’t have much of a clue. It is half an hour before anyone takes our drinks order. Another 10 minutes before someone else returns to say they’re out of the torrontes. A man could die of thirst here. When the $60 substitute wine bottle arrives, it is sloshed into our glasses without introduction. One waitress delivers three plates at once, in total silence. It probably says something about the dessert tasting plate that, 24 hours later, I’m struggling to recall it. There are scoops of white and dark chocolate mousse, I think, and some wedges of dry, heavy, tres leches cake that we don’t bother finishing. If you’re going to have dessert, have the suspiro a la limeña – a custardy caramel studded with Pedro Ximenez meringues. Centre Enmore. In 2011, she took over as Paspaley’s creative director. Her collections for the family company are driven by the natural environment from where the pearls come – and the women who will eventually wear them. “The themes and motifs of the collections often hark back to the origin of Paspaley pearls, the Kimberley in north-west Australia, since it is the only place in the world where these beautiful Australian south sea pearls grow,” she says. Design inspiration always starts with the pearl – perhaps its characteristics or the story behind a particular gem. “Australians are often surprised to hear the highest quality pearls come from Australia,” Salter says. “Indeed, south sea pearls are the only gems in the world that are of a suitable quality for jewellery in their natural form.” The Paspaley team simply cleans the natural pearls of sea salt , then begin the design. “No other gem in nature is beautiful when it is found,” Salter says. “Diamonds, sapphires and the like have to be cut, polished, etc. I think that it’s one of the reasons pearls have such a mystique and allure.” Paspaley’s Odyssey bracelet is a great lt er ch ri st in e sa example. Salter’s inspiration was the fan coral, in the Indian Ocean off the Kimberley coast, which has been translated into a delicate fan-like structure of gold and diamonds. The inspiration for the Lavalier collection, launched “life will last year and lauded as one of Paspaley’s most successful always have ranges, came from buoys and ropes used on pearl farms grand in the Kimberley. The most recent collection, Viva, occasions” began with inspiration from the Kimberley’s wilder aspects, with motifs resembling a snake’s scale. Salter says the Lavalier collection was also a response to her customers’ desire for something bespoke and

personal. “The jewellery allows the customer to choose their own pearl and enclose it in a delicate gold chain bag on a long chain,” she says. “It’s modern and suitable for everyday wear, which particularly responds well to the Australian customer’s lifestyle.” But it’s not all about designing for everyday, and that’s when Salter’s more dramatic side comes out. “Because life will always have grand occasions, we create special one-off pieces like pearl collars. They’re especially popular with our customers in Dubai, where the concept of casual has never really caught on,” she says. In answer to the tricky question of favourite pieces, Salter is clearly inspired by her newest designs and the work that went into them.“The process of designing

our most recent collection, Viva by Paspaley, was an extraordinary journey,” she says. “Our starting point was the idea of exploring the wilder, more sensuous side of pearls and the women who wear them. “Our designers developed a whole new way to cut gemstones. The Paspaley spirit cut was designed to evoke a second skin, with a transparency sensually revealing the woman’s body beneath.” To view the new collections, drop into one of two Melbourne boutiques, on Collins Street or at Crown or visit the company’s website. \ swilliams@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.paspaley.com

When Ivan Locke (Tom Hardy) climbs into his car at the beginning of this taut, thrilling drama, he knows he has a transformative journey ahead. Locke is a precise, decent and utterly reliable man who has made one (rather permanent and intimate) mistake. Setting out on a 90-minute drive to London, he hopes to make amends, no matter the damage it wreaks on his work and home lives. It would be easy to judge Locke harshly, so familiar is his transgression, but Hardy plays him as a wounded knight, driven by duty and honour to right his world despite being guaranteed a pyrrhic victory at best. Given the entire film plays out inside Locke’s car, the drama is mired in the character’s contradictions and conflicts. Luckily, he’s a fascinating study. Here is a good man causing pain, to abide by a code that appears meaningless to others. Some of Locke’s trials are almost comical in their banal melodrama. In a main plot thread, he negotiates a tricky construction job over the phone, leading to important-sounding talk about concrete pours. Through a combination of claustrophobia and Hardy’s intense, understated performance, even these trivial things take on a compelling significance. Despite its small scale, Locke is a bold and cinematic affair, with a rich emotional narrative. \

It’s not giving too much away to reveal that the first episode ends with the death of both main characters. Indeed, it’s this double demise that gives the series its bizarre premise, in which a world-famous pianist finds herself in the body of a poor waitress. Make no mistake, this is deeply trashy TV. Its vibe is cheap soap opera meets surreal student film, with a soundtrack from taken from a 1980s easy-listening CD. There are echoes of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, without the intentional humour. There are better shows to be watching, but it’s compelling stuff. Freed from the confines of taste and decency, it promises to go gloriously off the rails at any moment. \

ith a house designed by notable Australian architect Sir Roy Grounds, the owners of this single-level brick residence in Camberwell decided that it was time to get down to the business of renovating after living with an awkward floor plan for 12 years. Hawthorn-based Doherty Design Studio, led by Mardi Doherty, was commissioned to help the family of four achieve a better spatial flow in a much more functional, streamlined space. As is often the case in older homes, the kitchen and laundry areas were the overriding concerns for the young family. The home owners were adamant that a separate laundry and walk-in pantry were an absolute must in the new design, as was increasing natural light to the house, and a greater connection between the inside and outdoors. The new configuration has a rectangular kitchen zone, with island bench and seating, extending to an open-plan living and dining space at one end, that in turn flows out to the garden. Additional seating is also

created in the living area, with custom-built storage and seating running next to the freestanding wood fireplace. The owners’ love of quirky details and unusual collections can be seen in the mix of materials selected. Custom concrete, terrazzo and bluestone have been used for surfaces, with hoop-pine ply and blackbutt for cabinetry and flooring. Brass and perforated steel sit together with cork flooring, cut into tile-shaped panels, to create a material mix and pattern play that complement one another. Introducing colour to the scheme, the Doherty team added yellow accents to the custom-built joinery and a sliding door in the living room. An amber glass pendant light floats above the dining table while glass panels incorporated into the kitchen window reiterate the subtle continuation of the golden hued theme. This renovation successfully reflects the owners’ personality and style in a well-considered, thoughtful way, thanks to the careful hand and guidance of an extremely experienced professional design team. \ smacpherson@theweeklyreview.com.au

Living: Opening up the home to both the light and the expansive garden is one of the renovation’s successes. Space: This home now caters to modern-day family life in a newly configured open-plan space. Kitchen: A mix of timber veneer and black cabinetry, together with a custom concrete slab benchtop, gives the kitchen a contemporary feel. Design \ “Eco-friendly” is designer Paul Charlwood’s default setting, writes JO DAVY

n an industry where sustainability often serves as an excuse for a public pat on the back, industrial designer Paul Charlwood is just as happy flying under the radar to get the job done. Well recognised for designing reusable products for environmentally conscious consumers, his practice, Charlwood Design, most recently turned heads with UpperCup, a sleek reusable coffee cup that took out the homewares category of last year’s Melbourne Design Awards, and was a finalist in the 2014 New York Design Awards. But even when “eco-friendly” isn’t part of the client brief, it remains a priority for Charlwood, who established the practice in 1993. “Usually we just go ahead and design it from the perspective of minimising the impact of material use,” Charlwood says. “We tend to do it by default, without the client necessarily being aware of it.” Opportunities to reduce a product’s environmental impact at the design stage are varied, ranging from using recyclable materials to designing products with a long lifespan so they don’t need to be replaced. “As an industrial designer, you’re aware that you’re generating a massive impact,” he says. “Sometimes you feel like you’re the guilty party in terms of contributing a lot of wasteful goods, so we try to minimise that footprint as much as possible.” In addition to UpperCup, commissioned by Melbourne designer James McKay, Charlwood Design has developed a strong portfolio of green products since the company embraced sustainability as a design philosophy 12 years ago. The 321 Water bottle is a stylish, reusable water bottle with a built-in filtration system and ShowerWatch is a four-minute shower timer, re-engineered for an environmentally friendly manufacturing process.

area, come up hard against the striking black-tiled pool and deck off the northern side of the house. Varying ceiling heights are key to the way the space feels, Fitzroy-Kelly says. The raked roof reaches full height after you enter the hall from the low front entry. In the children’s rooms, on the southern side, the roof descends to its lowest point, creating a sense of intimacy. “When you move through a house, your head is usually closer to the ceiling than the floor. So how you experience that space is very important to how the space feels,” he says. The interior finish is simple but stylish. Relatively inexpensive but robust materials were chosen in keeping with the brief to design a home that would withstand the rough and tumble of family life. “The fit-out is a really simple yet cleverly put together arrangement of tough materials; it’s a good working house,” he says. The kitchen is practical, with laminated surfaces and a mix of reconstituted stone and stainless-steel benchtops. “The benchtops are glammed up with a smoked

mirror splashback, and highlight colour on the overhead cupboards in contrast to the lower cupboards,” he says. The desire to touch surfaces and experience pleasure in materials is something Fitzroy-Kelly aims for in intimate rooms such as bathrooms. “That can be done through different treatments, but can be achieved by varying the surfaces next to each other, which makes you look and notice,” he says. The family bathroom is a combination of mosaics, large tiles, timber lining boards and a touch of porcelain that makes the textures “bounce”, he says. But there are other ways to create interest: “You can do that through the pivot of a wall, or changing the wall angle, or through concealed or full-height doors.” This year the house changed hands for $1.345 million, the price a testament to the wisdom of investing in good design. \ ckennedy@theweeklyreview.com.au » For a full list of winners, go to www.bdav.org.au » jfkdesign.com.au

Norton Rose Fulbright got an award for increasing its NABERS star rating by 2.5 stars in one year. The business changed its buying guidelines to ensure any new office equipment is energy efficient. Whelan says the law firm is a big organisation in a big commercial building. It has the expertise to look at energy management in a sophisticated way. “They monitored energy performance at a zone level – so looked in what areas were they using energy at what times of day and how can they be more efficient,” he says. “They undertook the RMIT student project and weighted the efficiency of equipment they were going to purchase in their tendering process.” The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation Victorian Branch began with a health and environmental sustainability seminar and introduced programs to manage waste. “The ANMF … are starting their sustainability journey. IRONIC ICONIC

\ RACHEL BERGER HAS A BALL IN SOME HALLS

E

ach year Melbourne Spring Fashion Week arrives like a blast of pure oxygen after the stale odours of winter; it’s as if a hidden valve has been tapped, releasing fresh ideas and new talent. Last year about 45,000 fully coiffed and co-ordinated devotees of fashion, style and design immersed themselves in the fanfare of makers, models and marketing. It’s a sensational event that underscores Melbourne’s reputation as the country’s fashion capital. However, it’s important to understand that at the coalface of this event, and indeed any successful event, there are dozens of people working collaboratively to deliver a sparkling outcome. And there are a number of components to its success. A vital but often underestimated ingredient is the location, location and location! The choice of venue has a profound impact on any event. Undoubtedly, the excitement, anticipation and expectations that surround a fashion parade, an exhibition, a party or merely a meeting are contingent on the choice of venue. The right venue doesn’t just enhance a function or celebration, it absolutely sets the tone for the entire event and determines what kind of experience attendees will have. The venue determines the ambience, and you can’t fake ambience, just like you can’t fake bona fide style by sewing a fancy label onto an ordinary garment. Located on the top floor of the Myer city store, the Mural Hall is one of our most spectacular but

least-known treasures – a venue that would make any event special. Here in this chic European-style ballroom, you expect to see women in luscious gowns and swarthy men with athletic builds and aerobic smiles. The Myer Mural Hall has a history of fabulous soirées and fashion parades – and it’s still delivering on that front. Designed originally by Sidney Myer to host private fashion parades and exclusive events for the Melbourne elite, it was rarely seen by the general public. Completed in 1933, it is a unique example of a streamline moderne department-store dining hall, designed to accommodate 1000 people for dining and as a venue for fashion parades and performances. Why the name? The hall has several original murals by renowned neo-classical painter Napier Waller (1893-1972). These large, impressive murals feature representations of influential women through the ages. The murals will make your eyes pop; but there’s more – the decorative plaster ceiling and, at the north end of the hall, a pair of “mannequin stairs” leading down from two balconies and the change rooms to a common landing. A temporary catwalk or stage was installed at this landing level for fashion parades and performances. Everything about this hall screams (albeit demurely) “make an entrance”, from the three large and elaborate chandeliers to the parquetry floor – which replaced the original timber floors in the 1960s. These days everyone can enjoy the sumptuous style of the Myer Mural Hall. You can hire the venue for your special night or get primped and poised and book yourself in with friends for an elegant afternoon tea. \ boomboom@rachelberger.com

Glen Eira Town Hall

Horticultural Hall

Leonda by the Yarra

The Glen Eira Town Hall complex has been a centre for community activity and local government for well over a century. The original hall, designed by Alexander Rankin, was completed in 1890; the present hall, foyer and portico, designed by architects Goldsmith and Jenkin, was completed in 1931. The auditorium/ ballroom built in the 1920s, its art deco leadlight window ceiling supported by Corinthian columns, is richly ornamented and stylish. Undoubtedly balls and soirées held there over the years would have had gossip columnists of the day in a fashionable frenzy. \

Horticultural Hall has the kind of personal biography that’s reflected in its history of occupancy. The Victorian Horticultural Improvement Society erected its original iron shed in 1859. The present two-storey brick hall with its unusual classically derived elements – designed by architect William Ellerker – replaced the shed in 1873. The society continuously occupied the building until 2001 but through the years it has been home to many diverse groups. From 2006 it has been the base of the Victorian Opera. \

Previously known as the Hawthorn Tea Gardens, this had always been a popular destination for social afternoons with tea and scones. When it burnt down, partners Leon Jolson and David Walker bought the land and built the glamorous reception venue, which has been the backdrop of many fine photographs since the 1970s. A public riot broke out as the then governor-general, Sir John Kerr, arrived at Leonda after sacking Gough Whitlam in 1975. The Dalai Lama spoke here in the 1980s. And who can forget the glittering star-studded nights of the Brownlow and Logies. \

Maple Grove has virtually been rebuilt in the past decade. This two-level villa is typical of the new buildings – luxurious accommodation enclosed in white stucco walls. The entrance hall – with its two chandeliers – gives a clue to the level of luxury within. A wide, parquetry-floored central passage

divides the main floor. On the left, a main suite contains a double bedroom. It faces north and the street but is screened by a high-walled courtyard. The dressing room is lined with mirror-faced wardrobes, and the en suite has two basins and marble floor and walls. Further back, two bedrooms share an equally luxurious bathroom. On the other side of the corridor, a bedroom/

study faces the street, and a sitting room is integrated with the hall by two wide openings. An eight-metre-long family room stretches across the width of the house. At its west end, an all-white kitchen has imported appliances set into stone benchtops and 2pac-finish cabinets. Folding doors give on to a roofed terrace. Stairs lead to the lower level that, taking

advantage of the sloping site, provides extra accommodation. Here is not only a tandem garage, wine cellar and laundry but more, much more. A generous room could serve as an extra bedroom (a cloakroom is adjacent) or a family retreat. It gives on to a secluded terrace. The property is between two tram services, close to many schools and the pleasures of Beatty Street. \ NEIL CLEREHAN

This sumptuous builder’s-own residence is a recent addition to Croydon Road’s picturesque streetscape, and it fits the profile with aplomb. While the exterior is Edwardian-inspired, the interior is contemporary, primed to cater for the modern family lifestyle. The hallway has rich spotted gum floorboards. Plantation shutters and taupe carpet are a feature in the first bedroom and throughout the house. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with charcoal and white tiles, and there is a study nearby. The large family bathroom is similarly styled to the en suite. Steps lead down to the family hub, where faultless style and natural light form a unique synergy. A Caesarstone-topped island bench with breakfast bar takes centre stage in the kitchen, while white cabinetry complements the Asko dishwasher and Blanco 900-millimetre oven. The lounge and meals zone combine for flexibility. French doors reveal a tiered deck with stairs to a mod-grass garden surrounded by Manchurian pear trees. \ MICHELLE OSTROW ZUKERMAN

Just minutes from the Yarra River and Chapel Street, this townhouse is in a postcode location that’s hard to beat. From the street, the symmetrical façade has clean lines and is dominated by ample windows. Inside it is airy and bright. To the left of the entry is a large open-plan living room. This is a fine room – elegant and understated, with timber floors, high ceilings and long windows looking out to the street and surrounding garden. The kitchen is also a winner – Blanco appliances, timber cabinetry, black granite benchtops and a mirrored splashback will appeal to design enthusiasts. There is a large laundry nearby. Upstairs are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The main bedroom is spacious and looks out across South Yarra’s rooftops. It has a built-in wardrobe and an en suite. There is an basement living area with a wet bar and cellar, a security system, ducted heating and cooling, and parking with lots of storage. \ FRANCESCA CARTER

This renovated period house has many enviable attributes. On a corner block, its late-Edwardian/early-bungalow features have been refreshed recently, showcasing a fresh, bright interior with polished timber floors, leadlight windows and modern lighting. Red-brick open fireplaces in the open lounge and dining areas are a real feature. Skirting this zone are three bedrooms and a central bathroom with a skylight. The largest of the three bedrooms is carpeted and all three have their own built-in wardrobes. At the rear of the house, a sunny family and meals area has double-door access to a brick courtyard, carport and shed. Ideally zoned for families, the main bedroom and parents’ retreat benefit from a bit of upstairs peace and quiet. Carpeted throughout, the first floor makes the most of its elevated northerly aspect, with relaxing views and a balcony. This room also has an extensive built-in wardrobe, while the retreat is kept comfortable with split-system air-conditioning and direct bathroom access. \ JULIAN HEALEY

From the vaulted entrance to the sparkling pool in the backyard, this is an appealing example of everything that is good about an architect-designed house. The décor is a contrast of pale walls and floors with dark timber cabinetry, and all is kept bright and breezy by the generous amount of glazing. Downstairs is the living domain, including study or bedroom, kitchen and butler’s pantry, theatre, living and dining area; upstairs are the four remaining bedrooms. The indulgent design provides the three minor bedrooms with their own en suites. The main bedroom is generously proportioned, lovely to look at, and has a dressing room, built-in shelving, a balcony overlooking the park and a luxuriously appointed en suite. The location is worth an inspection alone. Sydare Street is flanked by parks so the view will never be built out and it’s close to Malvern East station, Monash Freeway, the Princes Highway and Chadstone. Still, all that might be academic in a house you will never want to leave. \ JAN FISHER
