n an age when busyness has become our most valued social currency, when we measure our worth by how much we have to do and how much we get done, it’s little wonder Shaynna Blaze is one of our most popular TV personalities. As well as her star turns on The Block and Selling Houses Australia, she runs her own interior design firm, has just released her second book, and has launched her own furniture, lighting and rug collections. She also raised two kids as a single mum and cares for her own mother, who has Alzheimer’s. What drives this human dynamo to get up at 4am and devour new projects like most of us devour Mint Slices? VIRGINIA TRIOLI PREPARES FOR THE NEXT BACKFLIP

taking precisely what they were entitled to – a maternity leave program that was designed to complement employer schemes – are now made to feel they have been fraudulently scamming the system. Moreover, where they were only recently told by this government that staying home with their new baby for as long as possible was the most important thing in the world – for bonding, breastfeeding and ensuring good emotional and mental health for that primary family unit – now they are admonished that they should be returning to work as quickly as possible and putting their baby in childcare from less than six months of age. Now, there are great arguments to be put for both these positions – being at home/ being at work – but is it too much to ask for a government to be even slightly more consistent on one of the most important social policies of our times? And, while they are at it, could they try to avoid the punitive, blaming overreaction of a government attempting to distract from a major policy backflip? I think I may have been one of the very few people in the country who could see great merit in a full-salary, six-month parental leave scheme – particularly one that tapped the top end of town for its funding source, given that many of their female employees would be great beneficiaries. I really liked the idea of government

t is, of course, far too much to ask for some policy coherence in this country. Promises are made, plans are put in place – and then they’re ripped up. Something else is reinstated, this starts to see some results, then that policy is ripped up again when the next mob moves in. I almost wept with envy thinking about the five-year term the re-elected British government gets to enjoy: imagine having a red-hot go at long-term policy implementation. What a luxury. Thus we have had from the federal government the extraordinary promise of six months’ universal maternity leave (paid at full salary, just as public servants get), then a total abandonment of the policy, followed by a backflip to an 18-week minimum-wage Labor government policy the then-Opposition scorned, and now a crackdown on what is being described as “double-dipping” (taking employer and government leave entitlements sequentially) – but what is actually the system being used exactly as it was supposed to be. Thus new mothers who had simply been

taking maternity leave seriously, and taking a woman’s real salary seriously too: being reimbursed at that level is probably the only way that many women would ever be able to afford to spend more than 18 weeks at home. And, if you can afford the time away, those early weeks with a child are crucial. For some it’s easy, but for others it is very challenging, and having time and space to get feeding right, sleeping right and simply spending time with this amazing little life is a godsend.

However, now the emphasis is on childcare and, worse, those women who choose to stay at home and raise a child will be punished further by having some family benefits taken away. So much for the most crucial job in the world. What drives me crazy is that I will be able to set my watch in time for the next government report, the next po-faced families minister to solemnly intone alarming figures about low breastfeeding rates; incidence of post-natal depression and family stress; the pressures young families are under … blah blah blah … with not the slightest reference to policy incoherence that fails to support mothers and fathers in those crucial early weeks of a child’s life. But if I set my watch again and just wait a little while longer, I guess the policy will change again: they’re all just one-term problems these days. ● Virginia Trioli is co-host of ABC News Breakfast on ABC1 and ABC News 24, 6-9am weekdays

MAY 20, 2015 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 7

S

haynna Blaze’s alarm woke her at 4am. She spent an hour answering emails and by 7.30am she’d already done a couple of hours of work on home designs for two clients in Sydney and Melbourne. After a morning meeting with her PA, she was in a taxi, heading from her Warrandyte home into a Melbourne radio studio for an early live interview. By the time she arrived at her Hawthorn studio for our interview mid-morning, she’d been up for hours but still buzzing with energy. It’s why Neale Whitaker, her fellow judge on The Block, refers to her affectionately as “the original Duracell bunny”. “I’m sorry I’m a bit late – I couldn’t find a cab in the city,” she says. “I called my son, Jesse. He lives just around the corner from here with his girlfriend. I got him out of bed but he didn’t mind.” When Shaynna isn’t on a plane flying around the country to transform homes for Selling Houses Australia or giving her expert judgment on The Block, she always has a project on the go. That might be designing interiors of private homes, writing her next book or adding to her rugs, furniture and lighting ranges. “If I haven’t got a project, I’ll create one,” she says. “I’m like my dad. He was creative and always had a project – although he didn’t always finish them! That drives me nuts, though. I love a finished project.” Shaynna’s father, Basil, died 17 years ago. His death was sudden and unexpected. A fitter and turner, he went to work one morning and never came home. He had suffered a massive heart attack. It’s clear he’s had a major influence on his daughter’s career path. “Dad had a massive shed and he loved to wallpaper and do craft and knit. He was a new-age man before his time. My friends would come home and dad would be knitting and he’d ask them if they wanted a jumper and then he’d make it for them. There was a stage where he did woodturning and we ended up with 25 cheese platters and bowls. When he did leadlighting, everyone got a leadlight window,” she says. As a kid growing up in a happy family home in the eastern suburbs, she dreamed of being an actor and an air hostess. “But never a nurse!” she says. “I knew a few girls who wanted to be a nurse but I never wanted that. I thought an air hostess was so much more glamorous but I was too short. They had height restrictions then and I’m only 5 feet 3 (160 centimetres). It’s funny now because I spend so much of my time on planes anyway.” But Shaynna showed early promise in art. At the end of high school, she thought about a fine arts course before switching to interior design. “You had to have more points to do fine arts than interior design and I didn’t get enough points,” she says. After studying design full-time for two years, she got her first job at the age of 20, working as a showroom designer for Reece Plumbing & Bathrooms – a job she describes as a lucky break. She did it for four years, during which time she married and had daughter, Carly, and Jesse. When the children were four and five Shaynna’s marriage ended, prompting a new career – as a singer. “It was just easier with the kids and being a single mum. I started singing in the evenings and at weddings, and mum and dad would come over and look after the children or they’d stay at their dad’s place.” “I’d always sung anyway and when someone got married they asked me to sing at their wedding and it grew from there. I joined bands and we wrote our own material. I loved it.” She still remembers the most popular

requests – Wind Beneath My Wings and I Will Always Love You. She says the divorce was challenging. “I made the choice that the situation wasn’t going to work for me or for the kids, but it was a challenging time,” she says. “I married at 23 and had a one-year-old by then. And the divorce was hard because his friends and my friends were the same people, and you go through that process of losing friends. But that naturally happens and I have no animosity about that time at all.” It was her loyal and long-time friends – the people she refers to as her champions – who later persuaded her to return to the world of design. “As a singer it was hard to make good money and I had a mortgage and I was a single mum. So eventually I realised I had to make a choice and bring in more money,” she says. “Going back into design was about the love of it and it was about earning a decent wage.” By then she had been away from interior design for five years – a long time in a rapidly changing industry. “I was still hand drawing with proper scale rules and drawing boards. I was a dinosaur,” she says. “But a good friend kept pushing me and pushing me towards design and I’m the type of person who doesn’t give up. There is this innate drive in me. Whatever I do has to be worthwhile and there has to be more.” Shaynna began working for herself – taking on residential design projects – until a 2007 advertisement in a design newsletter caught her eye. That ad led to an audition tape and the offer of a job presenting and designing for Selling Houses Australia. “I never knew what it would turn into,” she says. “Those first 12 months I travelled for 80 per cent of the time. There was a lot of juggling and then The Block came along and things hit a new level again.” With her hefty TV commitments, Shaynna wound back her private practice, Blank Canvas Interiors, but a year ago she bought her Hawthorn studio and has recruited a trusted team to help her balance her TV work and private design commitments.

W

hen Selling Houses Australia and The Block are filming, she spends four or five days a week travelling, in design meetings, filming, renovating and selecting products. Weekends and nights are a time for her private work and some much-cherished family time. After six years happily alone, Shaynna met her husband, Steve Vaughan; they’re about to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary. These days she likes to unwind at their home by turning off the telephones and TV, putting on some music and pottering. “Steve and I met at a bar in Melbourne that my girlfriend dragged me to. Because I was singing at that stage I hardly went out to bars at night – it was the last place I wanted to be. But that night my friend persuaded me to go out and my husband’s friends had dragged him along. It was meant to be,” she says. “I had a bad habit then, if someone asked me for my phone number, of saying, ‘Yeah

adly, Shaynna’s national success came too late for her father and for her mum, Annette. While her father died long before Shaynna appeared on our TV screens, her mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s 12 years ago. She lives in a Melbourne nursing home and Shaynna visits her as often as she can. “It’s the most humiliating disease,” says Shaynna sadly. “When dad died, everyone could mourn. With Alzheimer’s you mourn different stages. You mourn when you find out someone has got it, you mourn when they start disappearing, you mourn again when they’ve disappeared … And you feel constant guilt as to how often you see them and how sad it is. “Mum doesn’t know who I am any more – that happened four or five years ago. She can’t communicate any more either. Every now and again she laughs or smiles but she doesn’t know why.” On a happier note, Shaynna has just celebrated the completion of another project – Design with Colour and Style (Viking, $39.99). The book is a step-by-step guide to using colour at home, and the dynamic designer says she’d love to have her own TV series to show people how to design their own home to live in. Then there are plans for more quality furniture and homewares. Last year Shaynna designed an eight-piece Elegant Muse furniture collection for Molmic using classic lines, a palette of white, stone, neutrals and blues, and detailed stitching. Her wool and silk blend Textured Coast rug collection, inspired by the colours of the Australian coast, has also been popular. Of course, there are the ongoing stints on Selling Houses Australia and The Block … the projects keep rolling in. But there’s one special project that Shaynna wants to finish, too. “I want to travel more with my husband; I’d like to take him to Paris,” she says. “I went there alone when I was going through my divorce and I made a promise to myself that when I found the man I loved, I’d take him to Paris. I think it’s about time I made good on that promise.” ● smarinos@theweeklyreview.com.au

TEXTURE Think about textures that add the “soul dimension” to colour, for example matt, shiny, velvet, silk, embroidered, ceramic, timber, cut piles and ribbed textures.

TIMBER When choosing flooring, look at a display that is at least two metres by three metres so you can see the true colour and vein variances of the wood.

sure’ and making up a number. When Steve asked for my number, my friend grabbed me and said, ‘If you give him the wrong number I’ll kill you’. She saw he was a good one. “Within two weeks we knew this was it. We were engaged within six months and married 11 months after we met. You meet the right person at the right time. They accept everything about you and you can be better than what you ever thought because you have that person next to you.” Shaynna’s other happiest moments have been spent raising her children. “I have an incredible relationship with my kids – we call ourselves The Three Musketeers,” she says. “My time as a single mum was defining for me. I learnt a lot of life skills and taught those to my kids. They constantly tell me how proud they are of me. We never had much and they knew how hard it was when I was on my own. They’ve seen what I’ve created and to have your kids be proud of you is pretty nice!”

BAL ANCING COLOUR Use the Taubmans rule when balancing colour in a room: 60-30-10. The main colour will occupy 60 per cent of the room – walls, ceilings and floor. Furnishings, rugs and couches account for 30 per cent, and 10 per cent of colour is added by cushions, lamps and accessories. ● MAY 20, 2015 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 9

Oh, how I wished I could do that, just get on a plane & sleep heartily for the entire time (ISTOCK \ THINSTOCK)

was on a plane and the man behind me put his foot through the gap in the chairs, and for one horrifying moment his sock rubbed up against my arm. Long-haul travel really is its own kind of private hell. Never have I been more aware of the class divide than on a long-haul flight, where those who can afford it pay for the luxury of being able to put their legs somewhere. Recently, after three tandem six-hour flights and one five-hour transit, I actually found myself thinking that travelling business, or first class even, might well be worth every cent. There’s me, wedged between two fully grown men, which might sound tantalising, yet one of them snored. It was actually a relief because I suspect I might have also. The other one slept the entire time without moving a single little bit. Oh, how I wished I could do that, just get on a plane and sleep heartily for the entire time, but at my age my hips and joints ache twice as much if they are left still and so I need to change position every 10 minutes.

tell us

Otherwise I will get jumpy legs and end up kicking my fellow passengers. How strange that I shared six hours with these two men, during which time our heads bobbed together in unison and our elbows banged in the struggle to get food into our mouths and we sacrificed our own comfort to allow each other to respond to the call of nature and, despite all this shared humanity, not once did we bring ourselves to utter a single word. Thank God, because my friend recently took a flight and sat next to a guy

who talked about triathlons the whole way between Singapore and Dubai. On my flight, a man across the row was trying desperately to encourage the young girl beside him to become a fashion model. Then, much to my delight, the seating lottery delivered me a set of newborn twins in the row in front. If you’ve ever been there with young ones on a plane you know you just have to ride it out until they exhaust themselves, but it could take the entire season five of Downton Abbey Abbey.

Here’s another thing. You may think it’s over when you hit the tarmac but it isn’t at all because there’s still the horror of baggage collection to contend with and the fear that while a sea of black suitcases passes by on the conveyor belt, there is a very good chance yours might not and your toothbrush and knickers will be stuck somewhere in Africa. Some of those lost suitcases never turn up, you know.

Anyway …

Ah, long-haul travel. It is like offering someone a fine dinner but they have to wait all winter for the vegetables to grow, and then you need to find, slay and skin your favoured protein source, so it is a lot of pain and suffering for something great at the end. Somewhere in the middle of it all you do find yourself wondering if you really did want that dinner or that holiday overseas at all. Really, it’s nice enough in Australia, isn’t it? Who needs to travel when there’s a big, warm stretchy-out bed at home? ● khall@theweeklyreview.com.au

Gu.E, which according to staff and menu interpretations means barbecue, or grill, WAGYU or grilled dishes (you get the idea), is a welcoming white-tiled and dark-timbered space where diners huddle at high tables with shiny central stainless-steel grills for an interactive dining experience. The industrial-themed, minimalist décor has bare, low-hanging globes, black metal shelving and hard floors. It’s noisy and potentially chilly sans grills. ogsheads, foudres, barriques and puncheons: they’re different sizes of wine barrels and chances are your next wine has been aged in one. Oak barrels were originally used for transporting wine but winemakers soon cottoned on that wine aged in them was smoother and tasted better. Maturation in oak barrels adds flavour, texture and tannins to red and white wines. The newer the barrel, the greater the oak influence and a good barrel will cost upwards of $1000, depending on the quality of oak and who’s made it. Flavour \ Australian wines are universally aged in oak that’s harvested from French and American forests. Oak imparts

vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and other spices, plus nutty characters. Tannins \ Oak barrels can impart tannins – the grip you feel in the mouth – to whites

and help soften firm tannins in reds. Tiny pores in the wood allow a small amount of oxygen in, helping to bind tannin molecules together so they precipitate out. Texture \ That dry, pale pink rosé you loved over summer got its silky texture and pale colour from time in oak. our lives,” Caroline says. “If I was in the audience, I would be enjoying the nostalgia of it. I think it was a really fun time for people and that’s certainly the feeling you get from this show. It’s crazy, loopy fun.” Anything Goes enjoyed a recent Broadway revival, but Caroline stresses this is a home-grown incarnation, brought to life by Helpmann Award-winning Dean Bryant and choreographer Andrew Hallsworth. Which isn’t to say it won’t rival its brash American cousin. Melbourne audiences can expect spectacular dance numbers, a full orchestra and a massive cast, including Todd McKenney. “When people pay a lot of money to go and see a show, they want to feel they’re getting big bang for their buck,” Caroline says. “I think with this show, because of the scale, the joy of it, the magnificent score, people will go, ‘Wow, I’m so glad I did that’.” ● mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au (SUPPLIED)

s winter gloom descends, we Melburnians tend to crave a little joyful escapism. But if jetting off to a tropical island is out of the question, then a shot of Cole Porter might just hit the spot. Porter’s Anything Goes is about to sail into town with a new Australian production starring prolific performer Caroline O’Connor. Speaking to me during a brief break from full-steamahead rehearsals, Caroline says she has been surprised how much fun everyone has had putting the show together. “We’ve been working at quite a pace. There’s a lot of big production numbers and I’m involved in most of them, so I’m literally limping around. But this has just been laughter since day one,” she says. A lot of the pleasure comes from the musical’s 1930s cruise-liner setting, harking back to a time when people were just learning to enjoy themselves again after the financial hardships of the Great Depression. Given the economic turmoil of recent years, modern audiences won’t have to stretch themselves to identify with that. “It might be time for a little joy in

MUSIC

It’s a big year for Eurovision, as the contest celebrates 60 years. More importantly, Australians can soak up the kitschy glamour live – if we can be bothered getting up at 5am. We’ll even be able to vote for one of our own. Long-time fans of the contest might be a bit cold on this. For years, the true joy of Eurovision has been watching it ironically. In ditching the BBC’s carping coverage (hosted by Graham Norton), SBS has started taking it a bit too seriously. ●

After a few years of flirtation, two Melbourne music icons collide and the result is just as good as we might have hoped. Opener S.U.C.C.E.S.S sets the template – the sort of slinky, disco-flecked soul that will get any party moving. Rogers powers through on full-blast charisma, while Bamboos bandleader Lance Ferguson showcases his rare talent for making music that feels as sparkling as it does familiar. These 12 tracks feel like songs we should already love. ●

TIM ROGERS & THE BAMBOOS

The story of Henry VIII and his many wives has been thoroughly milked, most recently (and trashily) by The Tudors. Yet this adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s novels feels remarkably fresh. The quietly accomplished Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance) is a fascinating lead. Halfway between the poorhouse and the palace, he allows us to view the grandeur of the royal court without losing sight of the realities of life. Indeed, it’s the fusion of domestic drama and high-stakes political wrangling that makes this so compelling. ● MB

H U M M I N G P U PPY YO G A

Yoga is one of those things I’ve always lumped in with drinking cognac and making love on the beach – the idea is so much better than the reality. I’ve started yoga classes half a dozen times over the years, but always lost interest. Still, I love the idea of getting physically and mentally fit in a gentle, holistic way – and I love puppies – so when I heard about Humming Puppy yoga I was keen to give it a go. The promise “A yoga experience evolved from traditional practices in a stunning space that resonates with a perfect hum.” The hum in question is the gentle strains of Tibetan singing bowls piped into the studio at a frequency designed to match that of the brain’s gamma waves – to help achieve “a state of peak performance”. The reality Forget the local church hall, this is one schmick yoga studio. All blond wood and charcoal tones, it’s like a zen five-star hotel – check out the Aesop products in the bathrooms. Yoga mats are provided and you can book your preferred spot online (handy for those of us who like to hide at the back). Everything seems geared to please the senses, from the ambient 27-degree room

temperature to the stunningly good-looking teachers who gently guide you through your downward dogs, adjusting a foot here, a shoulder there. But where was the puppy? The pay-off I thought the constant hum of recorded singing bowls might get annoying, but after a one-hour class, my mind seemed to be humming in sync – in a blissed-out, zen-like state. The pain factor I glided out of the studio feeling recharged and refreshed; next day my glutes screamed in pain. Who should do it? Anyone who loves yoga, and those who’ve always wanted to. The bill $25 for a casual class or $400 for 20 classes.

Few things are more instant or custom-designed than a T-shirt that is printed to order as you wait.

Who’s behind the counter? Product developer Ed Redman and property manager John Mullany started their T-shirt business “by accident”. John’s house is on Johnston Street, Fitzroy, which hosts Melbourne’s annual Spanish festival. “We thought we’d try and do something fun,” says Ed. “I’d just gotten hold of a printer and I thought, ‘Why don’t we sell T-shirts out of the window just for the weekend’. It was hugely successful and we never closed.” That was three years ago, and last year the pair opened a second shop in Prahran.

What’s in store? Design your own or pick from a menu of artists’ work, and your T-shirt is printed while you wait. You can get printed cushions, tote bags, hoodies and even onesies, too. The store also makes custom one-off, 12-inch vinyl records. Who’s buying? Creative types, gift givers, parents printing their rugrats’ art and Father Bob Maguire, who once put down a rap record. ● CHLOE BOOKER

The creative potential for the “design your own T-shirt” is definitely the drawcard. Ed once sported one with MRI scans of his brain after a car accident. “They are all quite weird,” he says. One of the best designs he recalls was of a man who took a picture of his girlfriend and brought it in to be printed on a T-shirt. He then got a photo of him wearing the T-shirt and had it printed on a second T-shirt to give to his girlfriend. Print club: Ed Redman at Das T-Shirt Automat in Prahran. (SCOTT McNAUGHTON)

MY CHILD, A BULLY? What to do if your child is accused of bullying By CHERYL CRITCHLEY

ullying claims should always be taken seriously, but what if they might be exaggerated? My son, a sport-averse geek, was twice accused of bullying. When another boy’s mother rang to say her child had come home upset several times and mine was to blame, I was horrified. She insisted my son had bullied hers repeatedly so I apologised for any distress, intentional or not, and investigated – I’m not a parent who thinks my kid can do no wrong. But the worst we came up with was this kid being made “it” more often, for stretching lunch-time game rules. A few months later the mother rang the school to again accuse my son of bullying. The teacher spoke to them and all that emerged was a picture my son drew of this boy in a train going over a cliff a la Andy Griffiths’ absurdist style. It was a typical boy drawing but stupid, so I made him apologise and punished him. I called the mother to suggest mediation so her boy could detail the bullying and we could deal with it properly, but she refused. In the end, whatever happened appeared to be minor but everyone ended up stressed. How can you tell if a child has crossed the line into systematic bullying? As parents we should investigate and

be open to all possibilities, whether our child could be a victim or perpetrator. Dealing with the fact that your child may be a bully can be a reality check. Reach Foundation senior well-being manager Dr Karen White says that while the school may address the problem, when bullying is established it is important to ensure an appropriate apology is offered that acknowledges the behaviour’s impact, regardless of whether harm was intended. “Helping your child to develop the emotional intelligence to recognise their impact on others is a challenge for most families, especially when this behaviour is not modelled at home, either between parents or between parents and children,” she says. ● ccritchley@theweeklyreview.com.au USEFUL SITES ● Reach Foundation has a new Parenting Teenagers handbook (Affirm Press) www.reach.org.au ● Reach Out www.reachout.com ● Bullying. Y W H AT T H E E X P E R T S S A T H E W E L L- B E I N G L E A D E R Children rarely have a reason to fabricate claims that they have been bullied; they frequently hide their experience for fear that any action will exacerbate the problem. The impact on the adolescent is a useful indicator of whether the behaviour is intended to hurt them. Regardless of recognised intent, we can all become desensitised to extremely critical comments and they can become defining labels. It is preferable to leave management of bullies to those equipped to deal with this, such as the school or other organisation involved. Ideally a school can help determine the extent of any bullying claim. If your child has been accused of bullying, recognise that they may have caused harm and be aware that your initial reaction may inhibit their ability to tell you the whole story. A parent should be clear that they do not condone the behaviour. Mediation can help young people to appreciate the impact of their actions. It should be supported by a skilled independent person, such as a teacher or school counsellor, and generally not include parents. Depending on the school’s approach, any additional response should be relevant to the problematic behaviour; if it involved online activity that should be limited. ● DR KAREN WHITE senior manager, well-being, The Reach Foundation, and mother of three » www.reach.org.au

In fact, it’s likely that some of these hurtful actions were actually bullying behaviours. Bullying behaviour doesn’t make your child a bad person. Sometimes teens think they’re being funny, but don’t realise that what they’re doing might be quite hurtful. If your child is accused of bullying, talk to them about why they behaved in a way that hurt someone, and ask them questions that help them see their behaviour from the other person’s perspective. A change in behaviour is always going to be more meaningful than forcing your child to make an apology, so it’s best to support young people to make that change themselves. Importantly, bullying behaviour might be a sign that your child is dealing with something more complex. They might feel insecure in their friendships and want to prove themselves through bullying, or perhaps they feel angry about something and don’t have an appropriate outlet. There are a number of fact sheets and stories on ReachOut.com about bullying that can help your child understand what’s going on and how they can make a positive change. ● JONO NICHOLAS CEO ReachOut Australia, and father of three » reachout.com/bullying

MEGAN PARK Y

ou’d imagine Megan Park’s home would be a riot of folk-inspired colour, its interiors draped and festooned with extravagant Indian silks and French beading – as exotic as the clothes and accessories she designs. But the fashion maven’s Fitzroy terrace is an oasis of cool, calm minimalism, where an abundance of natural light plays on crisp white walls and bed linen. Upstairs, a modern renovation is dominated by glass and exposed timber. Megan shares this purposefully tranquil home with her architect husband Anthony Cox (who designed her shops) and their seven-year-old twins, Ella and Marley. Anthony has put

a contemporary architectural spin on the turn-of-the-century dwelling, while Megan has furnished it with treasures collected locally and while living in London. Megan moved to London in the early ’90s where she worked designing textiles for the likes of Givenchy and Kenzo, before launching her own label in 1997. Since returning to Melbourne 11 years ago, her range of intricately embroidered and effortlessly chic clothing, jewellery, children’s and homewares has won fans online and through her stores – in Armadale and Fitzroy stores. ● JANE ROCCA jrocca@theweeklyreview.com.au

This photo print titled God’s Sky is calm and serene and has that majestic feeling of a sky. I bought it 15 years ago from a gallery my friend owned in London.

SWEET DREAMS

(SCOTT M McNAUGHTON )

I bought this white English bedspread from an antique dealer I used to buy textiles from in the UK. It’s made up of 2000 circles, each gathered and stitched together. I love the delicate nature of it; it’s so pure and would have taken forever to make.

My favourite thing

I love the simplicity of an English sofa. Ercol is one of the iconic English brands from the ’60s. It’s plain and beautiful, and the back is like a giant surfboard. I have so much colour in my life at work that when I am home I like pure, clean and minimal space to surround me. I bought it at Mondo Trasho in Johnston Street, Abbotsford, six years ago.

A I R- I N S PI R I N G

GLOWING REVIEW I would often go to Paris to visit the flea markets for textile inspiration when I was living in London, and I stumbled on this 1920s German chandelier and fell in love. I had to get it home on the Eurostar. I had to dismantle it and then have it rewired for an Australian power point when I got it home.

I found this Susie MacMurray balloon sculpture in London. She is a cool artist who was represented by my agent. She recreates Christian Dior red gowns out of deflated red balloons. She is extravagant. I love looking at this beautiful white circular art piece that sits on our white wall in our bedroom.

SPINNING AROUND

I bought this 1960s swivel bucket chair from my friend Dean Angelucci, who has a furniture shop in Smith Street, Fitzroy. I saw it out the back of his warehouse and grabbed it. I reupholstered it with some embroidery fabric that was left over from a coat I made 10 years ago. I like the juxtaposition.

H I , H I , B I R D I E My friend Ambica from Cornwall, England, made this bird out of scraps of fabric. It’s a threedimensional finch and it’s life-like. The idea someone would make something like this for me is all the more special. It’s testament to a friendship. MAY 20, 2015 \ THE WEEKLY REVIEW 25

word play or funny narrative; it’s surprising, clever and based on decipherable incongruity. “I give the audience an unfinished canvas and expect them to complete the painting,” he says. Jack Levi, the genial, dark-eyed alter-ego behind the very straight-faced Elliot Goblet, grew up in leafy Malmsbury Street, Hawthorn East. “I lived there with my parents Leon and Marcelle, my brother Ed, a dog called Rusty who happened to be Rusty in colour and a dog called Blackie, who happened to be black in colour. We took a long time to pick names for those dogs,” Jack says. He remembers a busy house with a couple of rooms originally rented out to lodgers. “There was a big lounge room with leadlight windows and a huge front garden hedge, which was sometimes a dumping place for beer bottles. The kitchen was very narrow, so there was definitely no passing or overtaking there. I liked to sit on a bench in the backyard and stare at our beautiful plum tree, it was my special relaxation place.” But it’s the memory of “the roar of the crowd from Glenferrie Oval” that brings an infatuated boyish grin to Jack’s face. n recent years, as powerful magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has delivered detailed pictures of what happens in our brains across a range of emotional states – angry, happy or sad – there’s been a lot of scientific oonga-boonga about how and why we laugh. When scientists start to explain how laughter works, comedians generally respond by walking away and shaking their heads. According to Tad Friend (The The New Yorker Yorker), how the brain processes humour remains a mystery because comedy is not a science. “It’s an art created not according to algorithms or invariant laws but flashes of intuition fuelled by potato chips,” he writes. Elliot Goblet is one of Australia’s best-known comedians, having made numerous television appearances (Hey Hey It’s Saturday, The Midday Show and The NRL Footy Show to name just a few) gently guiding us through his highly individual and utterly hysterical comic lens on the world. He has also delivered hundreds of side-splitting performances here and internationally in the often dry, corporate conference arena. His comedy is not simple

Is Elliot Goblet’s comedy art or science? Who cares, it’s gloriously funny and that’s what counts! Elliot Goblet’s CD Goblet’s Greatest Bits, released last month, contains a multitude of comedy one liners, plus two songs in Elliot Goblet mode. oval’s close proximity meant Jack could watch his beloved Hawthorn play every time there was a home game. “I was addicted. I never missed a match from about the middle of 1962 until well into the 1970s.” About the age of 16, the serious but gregarious teenager added a few jokes to a school talk and was hooked when the laughter came rolling back. Several years later Elliot Goblet was hatched. “I decided to stand out from the pack by taking a different view from the other ’80s comics. You need to change gears to understand my comedy.” And it’s his comedy and compassion that began Jack’s association with Father Bob

Jethro Tull at Festival Hall in the early ’70s. I went with my brother Ed and another Jack. I loved Festival Hall. It was both exciting and surreal seeing somebody who I’d only heard on a record.

PLANNED TO PERFECTION 65 URQUHA R RQUHA RT STREET, TREET HAWT HA HORN, 3122

I

n a story that resonates today, Hawthorn residents voiced their concerns when a 40-hectare block of land was to be subdivided. The local newspaper urged town planners to take care in laying out the subdivision “of one of the most important sections of the City of Hawthorn”. That was 1919 and the subdivision, owned by the Urquhart family since 1850, was the preserve of pig and cow farmers and, later, market gardeners. It became the Urquhart Estate, with 152 blocks including those in neighbouring Swinburne Avenue and The Boulevard. Real estate agents promoted the estate, with only brick houses and strict building covenants, as an “example of modern town-planning in the heart of Melbourne’s leading city”. The first 76 blocks, sold in December 1920, brought up to seven pounds, 15 shillings a square foot. It’s no surprise that real estate agents still love the Urquhart Estate. But today you’re likely to pay north of $3500 a square metre for a toehold in this pocket of prime Hawthorn. The estate offers a unique streetscape of interwar housing in its many forms, from classic red brick bungalows to attic residences and Mediterranean villas. The driveway and the garage were important new additions to the housing designs to accommodate the increasing use of cars. The Spanish mission style, imported from America, was another popular design. This Spanish mission-style house offers the best of its period origins and a first-class renovation that ticks all the boxes for modern family living. An upstairs extension built in the past decade is hidden from the street. The property has a family-friendly floor plan, with excellent zoned living for different generations. Roughcast exterior walls and arched porches give the verandah an exuberant air. Dramatic interiors are a testament to the craftsmanship of the era. Timber panelling lines the entrance hall. It is matched by rich timber detailing, including window frames,

picture rails and mantelpieces atop a brick open fireplace. Etched-glass front doors, internal double doors and windows with fine leadlight are more treasures from a golden era. Moulded and strapped ceilings are more period features. A graceful curved timber fretwork arch is a natural entry point for exploring the rest of the house. The zoning offers two bedrooms at the front. One is the main suite, with walk-in wardrobe, large en suite and views over the front garden and to the street. A second bedroom with a bathroom opposite would be ideal for guests. There is also an office in this part of the house. The rear of the house has a large informal family room, meals area and open-plan kitchen at one end. The kitchen comprises a stoned-topped island bench and another bench against the far wall, housing stainless-steel Miele appliances. At one end of the kitchen, a walk-in pantry offers excellent storage. The informal rear of the house maintains the theme of white interiors and polished floorboards, stained a rich chocolate colour. On the back wall, three sets of french doors open the family room to the north-facing covered terrace and outdoor dining area. Columns support the verandah and the first-floor balcony. In the front hall, the stairs to the first floor have a strong timber banister and uprights stained to match the floors. Upstairs, the landing opens to a retreat that, in turn, opens to a good-sized balcony with views over the back garden and through the trees to the city skyline. One wall of the retreat is fitted with bookshelves. Bedrooms on either side of this room also look over the back garden. They share a bathroom with bath and shower. The Urquhart Estate has always been family central. With the range of schools nearby and great transport options, this house’s family credentials are sure appeal to yet another generation of buyers. ● MARIA HARRIS property@theweeklyreview.com.au

CAMBERWELL \ 27 DONNA BUANG STREET While it presents in stately style from the street, what lies beyond is the real reward for the buyer of this striking house. With six bedrooms, four bathrooms and three living areas, the house is large enough to keep all the family entertained as well as provide precious privacy. Despite the build starting in 2008, the vendors’ high standards mean the finishing touches have only recently been completed so no tiresome renovations are required. In fact, the décor of concrete floor and white walls punctuated by windows of all shapes and sizes means all that’s needed are some artworks to soften the edges. The house has three levels; living and dining rooms are on the ground floor, bedrooms on the first, and practical requirements such as parking and storage are on the lower level. As expected at a property of this standard, all fixtures and fittings in the kitchen area are top of the range, and a bar, wraparound terrace and extensive glazing add to the amenity of the open-plan kitchen/dining area. The sleeping quarters on the upper level are top-notch. The main enjoys the street view and has an enormous en suite and walk-in wardrobe. The other four bedrooms on this level share two bathrooms, while the downstairs bedroom has an en suite to itself – ideal for guests. ● JAN FISHER

It doesn’t get much closer to the hustle and bustle of South Yarra than this. This beautifully detailed, single-fronted and renovated Victorian house blends heritage charm and modern design to create a distinctive and liveable space. The verandah and leadlight entry lead to two carpeted bedrooms off the typical Victorian hallway. What isn’t typical about this hall is the artistic inclusion of the original calcimine paint on one wall. Each bedroom has an open fireplace and a built-in wardrobe, while the main has an ultra-modern en suite. At the end of the hall is a dining room with timber floors, gas fireplace and doors to a small courtyard. Winding through to the rear, there is a stone kitchen with stainless-steel appliances. It steps up to a modern living room and adjacent bathroom. Double doors extend this space to a larger second courtyard and provide access to the rear garage, storeroom and European laundry. Above the garage is a guest bedroom – a great addition, with a built-in wardrobe, en suite and views towards Chapel Street. ● JULIAN HEALEY

GLEN IRIS \ 6 VALLEY VIEW ROAD A tennis court, pool and studio/ pool-house are exceptional extras in the tightly held Dorrington estate. The features were added in the 1980s when the property’s owners snapped up the block behind (fronting Malvern Road) to double their land to 2562 square metres. From the family room and eastern terrace, as well as three of the four upstairs bedrooms, the view sweeps over the mod-grass court, heated pool and landscaped garden on three levels all the way to the Dandenongs. Out front, the c1929 house has informal gardens and an arched verandah. The en-suited main bedroom is on the left, and the lounge room, dining room and library connect through double doors on the right. The central skylit kitchen faces a meals area and lower-level family room, with two study nooks, cellar and bifold doors to the bluestone terrace. The sixth bedroom is tucked to one side, with a bathroom and powder room. Parties and guests are easily catered for in the poolside studio, which includes a living area, kitchen, bathroom, powder room and sauna. Extras include a kids’ TV room, double carports front and back, and zoned hydronic heating. The gently undulating, tree-lined street of quality houses is a short walk to trams and train, several schools, Central Park and Glen Iris wetlands. ● JACQUI HAMMERTON

Built during World War II, this two-storey clinker-brick house presents real heritage allure and a golden opportunity to renovate or refresh a sizeable family house. Outside, manicured gardens surround big front and rear lawns. Inside, each room exhibits subtle changes in wallpaper and lighting – things that bring bundles of character. The house has a secure front porch and separate living and dining areas – spaces that feature intricate cornices, chandeliers and open fireplaces. There is carpet throughout most of the house, except in the linoleum-floored kitchen, rear laundry and toilet. Upstairs is a vintage and immaculately kept carpeted bathroom, a study with a built-in desk and two spacious bedrooms with built-in wardrobes. In the centre of all this is a casual sitting room that offers another comfy spot to unwind. There are two spots for cars down the side of the property, one under a carport and the other in a garage with additional storage in an adjacent shed. ● JULIAN HEALEY

Buyers looking for something different from the brick bungalows of Balwyn should inspect this charming house. The mud-brick residence, built in the 1980s, looks like it got lost on the way to Eltham. Its buyers will enjoy the sort of solid comfort you would expect from a mud-brick house, but the appeal doesn’t stop there; the views over the city, night or day, are some of the best in Melbourne. Living, library, kitchen and dining areas are on the ground floor, and all have timber-lined cathedral ceilings with exposed beams in keeping with the style of the house. The three bedrooms are upstairs. With the main taking the best of those stunning views, it might be hard to get out of bed in the mornings. The two other bedrooms share a modern bathroom. A solar- and gas-heated pool dominates the rear yard, and established gum trees in the front yard add to that Eltham feel. The property is in the Balwyn High zone, two doors from Beckett Park and an easy stroll to the No. 109 tram. ● JAN FISHER

34 THE WEEKLY REVIEW \ MAY 20, 2015

SOUTH YARRA \ 100 WALSH STREET Wavendon was built in 1912 by her father as a wedding present for Dame Mabel Brookes – for years a leader of Melbourne society. Now it is one of the few, but surely the grandest, mansions remaining in South Yarra. Designed by Anketell Henderson in the popular red-brick, red-tiled-roof Neo-Gothic style, it has undergone a dramatic change. Its walls are now stucco: its roof slate. The mansion sits behind a high brick fence, on a double block overlooking its lush gardens, tennis court, pool courtyard and dining terrace. It has access to Tivoli Place and is only four traffic lights from the CBD. Four generous living rooms open from its central hall, which has a fireplace and stone-framed window from France. The two rear rooms were added 10 years ago when the house underwent massive alterations. They feature full-height steel-framed doors to the terraces. The kitchen contains a three-metre-long French stove assembly, and a generous butler’s pantry. The upper floor, reached by a graceful new stair, contains four double bedrooms, three bathrooms, a cloakroom and a linen room. A basement contains garages, cellar and storerooms. Despite its grandeur, huge rooms, exquisite joinery, marble, imported tiles and lighting fixtures never before seen in this country, this house manages to remain a family home. ● NEIL CLEREHAN

Sitting grandly behind a tall fence, this house presents an outstanding façade. Rendered grey walls are punctuated by white details, iron lacework and moulded ornamentation. A well-maintained front garden leads to a tiled verandah, which serves as a classic introduction. Opening onto an arched hallway are some wonderful spaces to explore. To the left is a handsome living room, which has an elaborate ceiling rose, a marble fireplace and a wall of cabinetry and bookshelves. All four bedrooms are also in this part of the house. Two front windows provide plenty of light. Towards the northern rear, the floor plan separates into two wings, wrapping around a pergola. This design enhances light and creates a series of intimate rooms with discernible purposes. The kitchen has stone benchtops and stainless-steel Bosch appliances. It extends to a cosy living room that, with its large open fireplace, is the perfect place to watch a game of football on chilly winter nights. ● FRANCESCA CARTER

5/75- 81 GRANGE ROAD

In one of Melbourne’s most privileged addresses, the aptly named Villaggio incorporates a Tuscan aesthetic. Designed by architect Gary Catt, Villaggio comprises 11 villas, which share a gymnasium and indoor plunge pool. Walking down towards this townhouse, it really does feel like you have been transported to Italy. There are winding stone pathways, sun-drenched terraces, terracotta-coloured roofs, walled gardens and palm-fringed piazzas and fountains. The façade of No. 5 continues the theme. A loggia creates a striking first impression. The quality and style continue inside, with American oak parquetry floors, high ceilings, wool carpets and marble surfaces. The living room has light pouring in from french windows. The sunken dining room and kitchen is also light and airy, and opens to a north-facing terrace. This outside area is a flexible space and can easily accommodate a table of eight or more. It has views overlooking the surrounding Italianate-style architecture. The Miele kitchen is sophisticated and chic with marble benchtops and a stainless-steel splashback that adds a contemporary edge to the otherwise classic interiors. Upstairs, the glamorous main bedroom at the front has an en suite, a large walk-in wardrobe and access to its own sheltered balcony. ● FRANCESCA CARTER
